- 0:16Unknown: What do you think you'll tell your kids about the experience?
- 0:19Unknown: Oh, I'm gonna thank them a lot. I realize this is more for them and their kids
- 0:26and their kids
- 0:28than it is us,
- 0:29the grandkids,
- 0:30don't know these stories.
- 0:32I can't wait to for us all to get together and see it. This went better than I thought it was gonna. Time does go fast, though. It's What time is it? It's almost 03:00. No way. Yes. God, you talked so much. I know.
- 0:48Unknown: Welcome
- 0:49to the AgTribes report, a breakdown of the top stories affecting the culture of agriculture
- 0:54with your host, Vance Crow.
- 0:57The report begins in three,
- 0:59two,
- 1:00one. Let's begin.
- 1:02Unknown: Welcome back to the podcast. I'm glad you're here. Well,
- 1:06I'm going to just share some thoughts today instead of doing the ag tribes report because over the holidays,
- 1:13I had several deeply profound experiences
- 1:17that all led back to the same answer.
- 1:21And I think that that answer
- 1:23is
- 1:24one that is worth sharing with you to get you to either think on your own experiences
- 1:31or for you to be able to understand the experiences
- 1:34of people around you. People that you maybe hold in really high esteem
- 1:39or you're jealous of or you've
- 1:42felt like, man, they don't deserve that.
- 1:45Or what I would do if I had that, I would be so much better off. My life would be easier.
- 1:52And as we are in the new year, people are trying to
- 1:55reinvent themselves,
- 1:57overcome so many of the challenges that they've faced,
- 2:00whether they're putting on weight or they've not been delivering in the way that they know that they can.
- 2:06I want to offer
- 2:09just some added thoughts as you are figuring out
- 2:12who you wanna be going forward.
- 2:15And all of this comes down to the idea of being humbled.
- 2:21Being humbled is one of those terrible experiences
- 2:25that every man must go through.
- 2:27Maybe women do too, but I can just speak from my own experience.
- 2:31In order to be
- 2:33a real
- 2:34fully
- 2:36transcended man,
- 2:38you must have been humbled at some point in your life.
- 2:42I know for me, there were times in my life where I had
- 2:46really grandiose ideas.
- 2:48They might have been naive
- 2:50or they might have just really been overconfident,
- 2:53maybe even arrogant.
- 2:55And then you collide in life
- 2:58with something that takes everything that you thought was certain
- 3:01and it crushes it.
- 3:03And whatever station you are at, you've been made to go lower.
- 3:08And I I think the best imagery here is from standing tall all the way down on your knees to maybe being knocked all the way down on your face.
- 3:20If you've experienced that, right, you, for a long time, looked at other people and you thought,
- 3:26oh, anxiety and depression, that's for weak people or that's for those people.
- 3:30Or you thought like, yeah, my life is perfect or I'm I'm on the upward trajectory.
- 3:36My,
- 3:37family is so great or my work, I'm so good at it. Look how much people respect me.
- 3:43Eventually,
- 3:45you will be cut down.
- 3:47And when you're cut down,
- 3:50this allows you to change
- 3:52in ways that are really important in order to
- 3:56feel the full scope of the human experience,
- 4:00and
- 4:01it opens up a channel, a door between you
- 4:05and all of the other people that have experienced something
- 4:09equally difficult
- 4:11no matter what the domain.
- 4:13I know that frequently with legacy interviews,
- 4:16I'll be preparing to do an interview with somebody that I think, oh, this person has an easy life. Right? They came from money. They are a senior
- 4:26executive at a corporation.
- 4:29Their estate is just really large, and they're so secure.
- 4:34And, of course, anyone
- 4:36would look at another person that is being successful
- 4:39and they would start to think if I had what you had,
- 4:43my life would be so much easier. I'd be able to do all those things that I wanna do because
- 4:48you have money or you have support or you had access.
- 4:54But in my experience, both doing legacy interviews and some really recent conversation I've had, I've come to understand
- 5:03that that's not how the world works.
- 5:05Not at all.
- 5:08You know, when you think about the different levels of friendship that a man can have,
- 5:13there's the
- 5:15core base friendship. You're a young kid or a young man,
- 5:19and you're going through life, you're just getting started, and you have somebody that is your contemporary, your equal,
- 5:26and you end up going through things together. Maybe one of you supports the other one, fills your sails up with air,
- 5:33you know, gets you really going,
- 5:35and you do the same for them. Or maybe you went through a bunch of bad things together and you came out on the other end.
- 5:43Those friendships are special and irreplaceable
- 5:46because you can't go back to your childhood
- 5:49when
- 5:50you were building these relationships,
- 5:53but they're not the deepest relationship that you can have.
- 5:57Of course, there are the friendships of the people you know at work or the people in your community you play sports with, you go to church with.
- 6:03Those can all be deep and profound and special and valuable.
- 6:08But there's even another
- 6:10level of friendship,
- 6:12and that is the level of friendship
- 6:15that can only be created
- 6:17once you
- 6:18and the other person
- 6:20have both been humbled.
- 6:23And what do I mean by that?
- 6:26Well, anybody that has started to feel the very sweet taste of success,
- 6:31they started to stand up tall and they've started to feel really good about whatever's going on in their life. I know for me, you start getting these grandiose ideas about these big plans that you can make and and about all the things that you can do.
- 6:46And then something comes along
- 6:49and it knocks you down on your knees.
- 6:53And it's
- 6:54no mistake
- 6:55that when people are praying, when people are of certain faiths, they get on their knees or maybe even lay prostrate all the way
- 7:05down on their face.
- 7:07And this is because this is the experience
- 7:11of
- 7:12getting knocked down and really humbling yourself.
- 7:16And I know for me,
- 7:18there have been these different times in my life when I saw someone else going through something
- 7:24and I thought,
- 7:25oh, come on. Like, it's not that hard. What what do you mean you have depression?
- 7:30What do you mean anxiety
- 7:32is getting you? What just just you guys gotta do it. You just gotta get over it.
- 7:37But the truth is,
- 7:39once you have been sufficiently leveled, once you have been really knocked down,
- 7:45all of a sudden, new door of understanding
- 7:48opens up.
- 7:50And you begin to see that life is so much more complicated
- 7:55and so much more difficult
- 7:58than what you're seeing when you're feeling that level of confidence.
- 8:03I think it's important to talk about this
- 8:06because maybe you are personally going through something right now. You are looking at the future,
- 8:12and it looks like it is going to be less good than the past.
- 8:16Or maybe you're just suffering right now. The decisions that you made led you to a place that you thought, oh, when I'm there, I'll be happy. I'll be satisfied. I'll be comfortable. I'll be confident. I'll have the relationships that I want. And then you get there
- 8:32and maybe you have those things, but what it cost you to get there now is something that burns,
- 8:39and it hurts that you had to lose that.
- 8:43I've been talking with people for the last few years
- 8:48and
- 8:49even really recently,
- 8:52I've
- 8:53been in touch with people
- 8:55that were
- 8:56at the top of society
- 8:58on many different levels. Maybe they're at the top of their community. Maybe they are
- 9:03nationally known people.
- 9:04Maybe they are people that,
- 9:06you look at from afar and think everything must be wonderful up there.
- 9:12And every single time,
- 9:14those people
- 9:16end up talking about the thing that knocked them down.
- 9:21And actually, I say this all the time with legacy interviews that the best stories are not the stories where you just succeeded, where you woke up and everything was great and everything worked out.
- 9:31The best stories
- 9:33are those when you got completely leveled,
- 9:36when something that you thought was
- 9:39easy to overcome
- 9:41now took you down,
- 9:43and you are suffering and horrified and ashamed
- 9:48of your inability to get back up.
- 9:53But
- 9:54I was talking with a person just yesterday,
- 9:58and one of the distilled pieces of wisdom that they have come up with through their life
- 10:05is that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 10:10And depression,
- 10:12anxiety,
- 10:13these words that we're using to describe incredibly
- 10:16complicated
- 10:17feelings and emotions,
- 10:20and and reasons for even being there,
- 10:23the thing that can get lost
- 10:26is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I get really annoyed with,
- 10:31corporate America,
- 10:33particularly in the ag space,
- 10:35trying to promote like, hey, check on your friends. And by the way, if you need any help, we're gonna we're gonna do something for you. Call this suicide hotline.
- 10:45And I think the reason I get annoyed with it is is not because that's not a good thing to do.
- 10:52I just think it's,
- 10:55I don't know, somehow
- 10:58pessimistic.
- 11:00Right? You're you're telling your clients,
- 11:03hey. Don't don't kill yourself. Right? Things aren't that bad.
- 11:09But recently,
- 11:11when I saw the pain in the eyes of two of my friends, totally unconnected friends,
- 11:18I began to think about,
- 11:22well, I might not want corporate America to do this.
- 11:26Somebody should be making sure
- 11:28that other people know
- 11:30that there's a light at the end of the tunnel
- 11:33and that
- 11:34all
- 11:35every single great person I have ever known
- 11:39made
- 11:40huge mistakes,
- 11:42catastrophic
- 11:43mistakes.
- 11:45They had vices,
- 11:47Maybe they were really obvious vices,
- 11:50gambling or drinking or drugs,
- 11:53or maybe they were much much less obvious. Maybe it was the way that they ate or the way that they, interacted
- 12:03with people when they became scared or when they became nervous.
- 12:07And those vices end up pulling them down.
- 12:12And every single person of substance
- 12:15that
- 12:16is out there today
- 12:18experienced
- 12:20really terrible things.
- 12:22And once you really internalize that, once you really get it through your mind that even the great people, even the most highly esteemed people have been knocked all the way down to their knees and maybe completely flat on their face,
- 12:38then you can start to say,
- 12:41well, if they can overcome it, so can I?
- 12:45My friend that was telling me about their
- 12:48crippling anxiety and their drinking problem
- 12:51and some of the challenges that are going on with them, they said,
- 12:56I was asking, well, what has been the lesson out of this?
- 12:59And they said,
- 13:02there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 13:05There is always a light
- 13:07no matter how dim
- 13:09that
- 13:11you need to walk towards.
- 13:14This reminded me of actually a homily I heard a couple of weeks ago.
- 13:20The priest was standing up in front of the congregation and he said,
- 13:24many times in our lives, we go to talk to God, we say our prayers, and we say, God,
- 13:31what is the big plan? What is it that I should be doing? Where do I fit in this larger
- 13:37picture?
- 13:38What is it that I should be striving for? Who am I? These great big questions.
- 13:45And the priest said, when you ask God a question, he will answer you. But the challenge is that if you ask for answers to these great big questions, who am I? What is this all for? Why am I experiencing this? Oftentimes,
- 13:59whatever answer God gives you back,
- 14:02you're not able to hear.
- 14:04But he said,
- 14:06that's not actually,
- 14:08the best way to talk to God.
- 14:11And in fact, maybe if you are struggling to hear God,
- 14:15it is that your question is too big for you to understand his answer.
- 14:20And instead, what you should do is humble yourself.
- 14:23And instead of asking about grandiose things and big pictures and vision and who am I and all these questions that are incredibly complicated,
- 14:32you should just ask,
- 14:34God,
- 14:35what do I need to fix next? What do I need to sacrifice?
- 14:41What is the next tiny step that I can take?
- 14:47And he said,
- 14:48the real amazing thing is if you ask a question so simple,
- 14:54you will always get an answer.
- 14:57And when he said this,
- 14:59I had this, like, chill go through me
- 15:03because
- 15:04he's totally right.
- 15:06In my experience, I spent years
- 15:09wandering around who am I? What what should I be doing? What what is what is the great big thing? And I spent a lot of time just wandering around.
- 15:19You know, maybe it looked like progress, but it didn't feel like it.
- 15:24But anytime I have ever asked, god,
- 15:28what do I need to be working on?
- 15:30What tiny thing do I need to be doing?
- 15:33There's always an answer. In fact, there's always an answer to such a degree
- 15:39that I often find myself
- 15:41afraid to ask that question.
- 15:44And that really getting down on your knees and saying,
- 15:48tell me truly,
- 15:50what should I do next? What tiny thing do I need to improve about myself
- 15:56is the only safe way to do it.
- 16:00So
- 16:01as the year is beginning,
- 16:03I hope for great things for you and for me, for all of our loved ones, for our nation, for our entire civilization.
- 16:14But I also want to impress upon you that if you don't
- 16:18see a light,
- 16:19if you don't know or even think that great things are possible for you,
- 16:25then I would suggest
- 16:27humbling yourself.
- 16:29Get down on your knees either literally or proverbially
- 16:33and ask yourself,
- 16:36ask God,
- 16:38what is one thing
- 16:39that I should be looking at in myself
- 16:42and trying to fix
- 16:44or improve?
- 16:47And there's an answer.
- 16:49And don't be afraid of that answer.
- 16:51Whatever it is,
- 16:52all you're trying to do is to figure out how do I get on the path? How do I take the next step?
- 16:58So many people get caught up in,
- 17:01it's gonna be so hard, so long, so
- 17:05big of a journey. I don't wanna get started.
- 17:07And in fact, isn't that like the hardest part about weight loss?
- 17:11You know, you you you try to get on an eating plan, and, and at first, you see all these great returns and things are going well, and you're doing it. And then you stop losing two pounds a week to losing a quarter pound or an eighth of a pound, or maybe you start going back up in your weight and you start thinking,
- 17:32what the hell? What what's all this for? Why am I doing this?
- 17:37But if instead of seeking to achieve this
- 17:41giant goal that you have,
- 17:43you say, alright, that's where I think I'm headed.
- 17:47But how do I stay on the path?
- 17:49What is a way to take another step forward?
- 17:53This has been very helpful for me to think in this way
- 17:57and it is
- 17:59maybe the best advice,
- 18:01input,
- 18:02anything,
- 18:03outreach
- 18:04that one man
- 18:06can do to another.
- 18:08Unfortunately,
- 18:09right now in a in a time in my life when things are good and they are easy, and I try not to be afraid
- 18:17of when I am going to be humbled again.
- 18:20But I know it's going to happen. It's gonna happen to me, and it's gonna happen to every other person of substance that's out there.
- 18:28And so if you have experienced these things, if you yourself have been humbled,
- 18:33then make sure to keep that door of understanding
- 18:36open.
- 18:37The door that lets you know, hey, man, people go through shit,
- 18:42and they didn't want it, and they didn't expect it. And maybe maybe they did deserve it, but maybe they didn't.
- 18:49And then find a way to connect with other people.
- 18:54Because what you will find out is people that you think are so different from you, so much better than you, their life is so much easier than you.
- 19:02When you finally get to that place where you've opened up your door to show your
- 19:07experiences, you're being humbled, and they open up their door,
- 19:12now you can have a level of connection
- 19:15that is beyond what anything a young boy can have.
- 19:19It's so far beyond
- 19:21what anybody could explain. In fact, I would say it's just like parenting. You can't possibly know how hard it is to parent until it's 3AM,
- 19:30and that baby will not stop crying, and you have things you have to do tomorrow
- 19:35when all of a sudden it dawns on you.
- 19:38Oh, man.
- 19:39I was so impatient with my coworkers
- 19:42when they couldn't get a babysitter, when they had to miss work, or when they're not getting things done on time, and it horrifies you. It's at least it did for me where you're like, oh, man.
- 19:52I
- 19:54I can't believe
- 19:55that I was so
- 19:57incapable
- 19:59of being empathetic.
- 20:01So once you have this door to your life,
- 20:05go and see if other people will open up the door
- 20:09to their being humbled.
- 20:11Go look for a chance to tell people there is a light,
- 20:16and let's just get on the path and just take one more step.
- 20:21In all of this, saying all of this, if you've stayed here, one of the big things that I am trying to do is
- 20:27to,
- 20:28humbly ask myself, what should I be doing? And I have had the tremendous opportunity to spend a great deal of time with my children.
- 20:37And as I started to prepare the ag tribes report this week, I started to realize
- 20:45if I do this, if I continue to do this live show and I and I'm trying to do the news, it's gonna take me away from my work and it's gonna take me away from my kids.
- 20:55So
- 20:57I don't think I'm gonna keep doing the ag tribes report, at least not in the way that it was before.
- 21:02I'm not gonna start,
- 21:05I'm not gonna keep doing this, like, news rundown that I've been doing. I'm not spending my time watching the news. And whatever I have to say on ethanol policy or new world screwworm,
- 21:20you can find that somewhere else.
- 21:22Instead, I'm going to find a way
- 21:25to have the kinds of conversations that I'm talking about where somebody will explain,
- 21:30somebody that you respect, somebody that you think is great or has it all figured out or is a total asshole and you hate.
- 21:39I'm gonna try and have the kinds of conversations
- 21:41that show you
- 21:43their door
- 21:45to that room
- 21:47where they were humbled
- 21:49and they had to learn deep things about themselves.
- 21:53And hopefully,
- 21:54in this,
- 21:55you will hear
- 21:57things that matter to you, things that allow you to understand this person at a deeper way,
- 22:02that allow you to not be so hard on yourself,
- 22:06and allow us to make the world a better place.
- 22:10So I haven't exactly figured out how I'm gonna do this,
- 22:13but I did feel like after taking a long break from Ag Tribes report, I definitely owed it to you. I
- 22:20I cannot believe how many people listen to this show week in and week out, and I'm grateful for it.
- 22:26And so I want you to be able to come back and get really great content, but I want it to be content that I am uniquely good at offering. So gonna make some changes. I'll be back to describe that more.
- 22:39If you are interested in improving
- 22:42yourself,
- 22:43your skills, your ability to connect with others,
- 22:46I am, putting on a class I call interest based communicating,
- 22:50where I teach about negotiations,
- 22:53storytelling,
- 22:54how do you introduce yourself.
- 22:56We talk about how to have better conversations where you're, listening in a level that allows you
- 23:02to connect much more deeply. We talk about conflict, and we even have an entire session on how to get better at presenting your ideas so that other people wanna hear them. If you're interested in a class like that, whether it's online or in person here in Saint Louis,
- 23:18then go to vancecrow.com
- 23:20and, click on the the interest based communications course IBC.
- 23:25Alright. That's gonna do it. I will be back with, with more
- 23:30in the new year.
- 23:32Thanks so much for, for listening and, yeah.
- 23:35Reach out. Let me know what you think.
- 23:38So the conference organizer has a terrible challenge.
- 23:42The audience can pull out their phone and pull up anyone talking about anything.
- 23:47How do you find somebody
- 23:49that is both going to reach every single person in that audience and yet still have that spike of energy where people are electrified because they're hearing about things that they aren't used to or that make them think about things in a different way?
- 24:02The most important question that I ask a conference organizer is, what is it that you want people to feel? What emotion do you want them to have when we leave this talk? What's their disposition? How are they gonna interact with one another? What does this prompt in the people that are there?
- 24:18It's not just the information. What you're giving them is energy,
- 24:22a reason to be there in that moment.
- 24:25Now they take that energy and they share it amongst each other.
- 24:30For me, the best speech is when people walk away being like, I now have a tangible skill,
- 24:36but they didn't necessarily readily accept it and they had to grapple with it. They set their phone down, they leaned forward, they said, How do I feel about this? And through that, an energy is created that is not about the speaker, it's about the person listening to the speech.
- 24:51It's far beyond motivation.
- 24:53It's actually giving people skills.
