Transcript
- 0:00What up y'all I am back with another solo cast and this one's going to be a story about a friend, a good friend, creator, construction, professional.
- 0:09friend of ours.
- 0:10And if it's your first time here, welcome to the LnM Family.
- 0:14This story.
- 0:15Covers the progression.
- 0:17and maybe some of the, like the, the.
- 0:19Invisible details of what creators go through.
- 0:23When they're putting their idea out into the world.
- 0:26I felt like it was important to go through it because there's a ton of energy.
- 0:30Uh, there's a whole, and like this emerging community of creators.
- 0:35And what I mean by creators is people that are producing blogs and producing newsletters, producing podcasts, producing books.
- 0:44And all of them are in the construction industry.
- 0:46And it's not to say that it wasn't happening before.
- 0:49Um, but there seems to be a heavy uptick.
- 0:52There's like a spike going on.
- 0:53And it's exciting for me because.
- 0:55it's really counterintuitive, right?
- 0:58My, my mindset, I guess, years back was, you know, I come in, I install, I do my job.
- 1:03I go home, all that other stuff is just wishy, washy, garbage, like who has time to do that?
- 1:09but.
- 1:09The messages that are getting out there are helping people, helping people improve the experience that they're having at work.
- 1:16Um, to the amazing careers that are available in the industry.
- 1:20And, and helping the individual.
- 1:22You know, having finding a creative outlet.
- 1:26And nurturing and developing it is it's a special experience.
- 1:30It has been for me.
- 1:31And so I was listening to an interview of my buddy.
- 1:34and he kind of painted a picture of when he first started.
- 1:37So now he's got a really popular newsletter that continues to grow.
- 1:42He said he started like a couple, three years back with the blog.
- 1:46He wanted to write a blog.
- 1:47The intent was to monetize it.
- 1:49He got that bad boy going.
- 1:51Uh, dove into it.
- 1:53And if for whatever reason he had to put it on pause.
- 1:56So he stopped.
- 1:57The important thing there is that he paused, he put it back on the shelf and focused on the other things.
- 2:03And I know sometimes it might feel like you start a new idea and for whatever reason you got to stop.
- 2:08And then there's a little bit of shame or embarrassment about kicking it back again, because everybody says you gotta be consistent.
- 2:14Oh, my God.
- 2:14Consistency is the most important thing.
- 2:17No live in your life is the most important thing.
- 2:20So if you put something on pause, Uh, take a break and focus on other things going on in your life.
- 2:26You get two points from me, two points on the scoreboard for you.
- 2:31'cause you can always pick it back up.
- 2:32So then he got motivated and decided to pick it up again.
- 2:36And this time he did some research because he he's he's that type of guy.
- 2:40Right.
- 2:40He's not like me.
- 2:41We're just like, oh, that looks cool.
- 2:42Let me free.
- 2:43Let me go do the thing.
- 2:44He did some research in.
- 2:45And discovered that newsletters were a thing.
- 2:49and so he put the newsletter together and he has a super creative way.
- 2:54There's means everybody loves the means.
- 2:56There's some really good information.
- 2:58there's always a, you know, a takeaway at the end and some jokes in there.
- 3:02and that simple format, like just plain relaxed language sharing information, connecting people to resources and giving them a laugh.
- 3:12Has started a swell of, of, um, interest.
- 3:18In his weekly newsletter.
- 3:21Now what also happened along the way, right?
- 3:23Like, so he figured it out.
- 3:24He got his little formula.
- 3:25And I know that he didn't get a million subscribers day one.
- 3:30But he stuck to it.
- 3:31He started getting feedback.
- 3:32He started listening.
- 3:33People started responding and signing up.
- 3:35And so he stayed the course.
- 3:37I think that's another important point.
- 3:39There's a lot of times we want to veer off to the left and veer to the right and oh my God, it's It's not grabbing growing fast enough.
- 3:45maybe I'm wrong.
- 3:46Nobody likes my stuff, whatever.
- 3:47And I'm going to tell you, I feel like there's a theme that I've seen, especially in the people I know.
- 3:53If you're quitting and you haven't been at it for at least a year.
- 3:57And when I say been at it, I mean, on the one thing.
- 4:03And you're quitting because it's not growing or because you're not getting a response or because you're not getting feedback.
- 4:09You're quitting to Sue.
- 4:11Like you got to put a year in and expect crickets for the first year.
- 4:17Before you decide to make a dramatic change or just let it die.
- 4:21I like.
- 4:21I may be wrong.
- 4:22I also know that there's some people out there that have immediate instant success and that's, that's phenomenal.
- 4:28but.
- 4:29That's rare.
- 4:30So I want y'all to keep that in mind.
- 4:32And so what happens.
- 4:33It's happening for him and I get to see it and it happened for me.
- 4:36I started this podcast.
- 4:38And then I got introduced to live streaming and then I got introduced to book writing and you know, all these new things, learning how to edit video, learning how to transcribe video, learning, how to post on the different socials.
- 4:50Like all these other little skills start developing as a result of the first thing.
- 4:55So his first thing was the blog turned into his newsletter.
- 4:59Now he's got a podcast, the cm mentors podcast.
- 5:02Another important thing is the cm mentors podcast was a result of a connection and a relationship that he built from doing the damn thing.
- 5:12Like he started the newsletter.
- 5:14I don't know that it was his master plan to start a podcast.
- 5:18But he met somebody, they connected, they clicked and said, Hey, why don't we do this?
- 5:22And so it's something I want to point out in that when you put yourself out there and start sharing your voice, sharing your message.
- 5:29as, as authentically as you possibly can.
- 5:32You will attract the type of people that dig you.
- 5:36They can get down with you, you know?
- 5:38And in the collaboration that comes from that.
- 5:41It's totally unexpected and super, super powerful.
- 5:43Absolutely worth it.
- 5:45And now, like recently I'm a little jealous because he got into his gift game.
- 5:50Um, he creating these gifts or I don't know what you call, he's creating these little clips.
- 5:55That have an image and they have a little funny person make it a thing, and there's some texts in it.
- 6:00And that full went and got like a few million views on a handful of those things.
- 6:05And all of them are amazing.
- 6:07And they're like, so engaging that immediately people started copying them, which is good.
- 6:12Right?
- 6:13Like that's amazing.
- 6:14again, that was not his goal.
- 6:16His goal was to start this newsletter and it's T he developed some new skills.
- 6:20He put some stuff out there and he got uncomfortable.
- 6:23He took a risk.
- 6:24And the Versus responding in beautiful and amazing ways.
- 6:30I'm talking about Matt graves.
- 6:33He is the construction Yeti.
- 6:36He created the, uh, construction curiosities newsletter, the cm mentors.
- 6:41Podcast the construction, Yeti empire.
- 6:44Another thing that he's done.
- 6:46That really inspired me because I could really do better at that.
- 6:50He sharing his goals out loud with the world?
- 6:53You know, recently he had a post on the LinkedIn, Shout out that he had a goal to get 2000 subscribers to his newsletter.
- 7:01And he's just a few hundred short of hitting that 2000.
- 7:05And I think the LnM Family can help them break past that 2000 subscriber.
- 7:09Mark.
- 7:10I will definitely leave a link down in the show notes so that y'all can hit them up.
- 7:14Subscribe, check them out and tell you it's good stuff.
- 7:17He sent out the newsletter.
- 7:19Every Saturday in the morning, that way you're not being distracted at work, you can, you know, chill, drink your coffee and consume that content.
- 7:27the takeaways I got from listening to his interview and thinking about the creators that I know in my own path.
- 7:34in this and becoming a social media mogul.
- 7:38There's three big things.
- 7:39One.
- 7:40Is.
- 7:41Just do the damn work.
- 7:44Do it.
- 7:45Decide what you're going to do, do the thing.
- 7:48If you're gonna do it monthly, do it monthly.
- 7:50If you're gonna do it biweekly, do it by weekly.
- 7:52If you do it weekly, just do it weekly, polished on polished, whatever.
- 7:57Do the work, put the thing out there.
- 8:00And expect crickets for the first year.
- 8:02If you're, if you're having crickets, don't feel bad.
- 8:05It's not, you it's them.
- 8:06It'll come around the other point is.
- 8:09If you're going to do something, if you're going to start something new.
- 8:12That's going to be super visible.
- 8:14There's there's plenty of garbage out there.
- 8:16When I say garbage, I'm talking about like, self-serving crap.
- 8:19And so I think another secret key to successful creative projects.
- 8:24Is doing them in service to others.
- 8:27All right, the constructions, curiosities newsletter.
- 8:32Is to serve others.
- 8:33He's putting that out there.
- 8:35He's highlighting other professionals.
- 8:37He's highlighting other people in the industry.
- 8:40Other creators.
- 8:41So everything he's doing is to serve the community.
- 8:44And I think that's always one of the most important ingredients.
- 8:48For something that's going to be meaningful, long lasting and grow.
- 8:53And the last point is you gotta let people know you got to do the thing out loud, right?
- 8:58Like.
- 8:59He, and I connected through the LinkedIn because we noticed each other's content we connected and then we can help each other.
- 9:05Right.
- 9:05He's given me some cheat codes.
- 9:07I'll be.
- 9:08Um, I'll be leveraging here in the next month or so.
- 9:11and I've been able to bug the hell out of him about, Hey man, where are you at?
- 9:14What are you doing next?
- 9:14And.
- 9:15And so doing it out loud where other people can see inviting other people in so that they can speak into your life is really important.
- 9:23I know it's terrifying.
- 9:25But the yield is totally worth it.
- 9:28The return that you get for inviting people in is gigantic.
- 9:33You can't even equate it.
- 9:34Like it'll blow your mind.
- 9:36So give that one, a shout.
- 9:38And before we wrap up.
- 9:40I do have, uh, I'm going to do a little bit of doing it out loud, here, myself.
- 9:44I just launched a little experiment and it's titled visible leadership.
- 9:50It is an email course.
- 9:52It's free.
- 9:53And so you sign up, and you'll get five field exercises.
- 9:57Each of those field exercises is.
- 10:00Focus to give names to the faces that we walk past every day on the job site.
- 10:06You know, I've been able to travel the country and spend time on hundreds of projects.
- 10:11And there's always only a small handful of projects that stand out in terms of comradery.
- 10:17cleanliness, the way people treat each other, take care of each other.
- 10:21And the key difference is the way leadership.
- 10:24And when I say leadership, I mean, supervisors, general contractors, et cetera.
- 10:30Treat the craft workers.
- 10:32And when I see the way they treat them, I mean the way they engage in interact with them.
- 10:38And the key differences they do it one-on-one face to face.
- 10:43Yes, they have the big meetings and they like taking pictures of those and posting them.
- 10:46Of course.
- 10:47Uh, but.
- 10:49They take the time to get to know the people out on the job site.
- 10:52They take the time to get to know the people that are bringing, driving the lunch trucks onto the job site.
- 10:58And it is a transformative.
- 11:00Habit.
- 11:01And I realized that it is not a natural habit for everybody because there's only a few projects that ever really shine.
- 11:09And so.
- 11:10I decided to put this little email course together to help some people get their super simple stuff.
- 11:15I'm going to put the link down in the show notes, sign up.
- 11:18It's free.
- 11:19There's no cost to it.
- 11:20You'll get an email every couple of days you'll get a field assignment.
- 11:24And your task is to go do it.
- 11:26It's not that hard.
- 11:27You will be a little uncomfortable and I really want to hear how your experience goes.
- 11:31If you do sign up.
- 11:33Be cool.
- 11:34And we'll talk at you next time.
