- 1:35topic every week.
- 1:36This is Series 5, Show 29, and How
- 1:41to Grow Through Every Season is our master
- 1:43topic.
- 1:44It starts on Saturday, rolls through to Friday,
- 1:47and it's about building a life that creates
- 1:49lasting results, how to build resilience.
- 1:55During difficult seasons is our granular topic for
- 1:59tonight, Series 5, Show 29, Episode 3.
- 2:02So let's get right into it.
- 2:03So welcome, everyone, to the ever-popular Inspirations
- 2:07for Your Life show, and I'm John Seymour
- 2:12Lee, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:17podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 2:23Montclair State University, a passionate lifelong learner, and
- 2:28so grateful to be now a published author
- 2:31of Drain to Driven.
- 2:32Thank you so much for joining me today
- 2:35for another episode of the Inspirations for Your
- 2:37Life show, where I help you explore practical
- 2:40principles that help us become stronger, wiser, and
- 2:45of course, more resilient every single day of
- 2:47our life.
- 2:48Life will always include seasons of challenge, disappointment,
- 2:53and uncertainty.
- 2:54None of us can avoid these difficult moments,
- 2:58but every one of us can decide how
- 3:01we'll actually respond to them.
- 3:04Today, I'm going to help you guys discover
- 3:07that resilience isn't something you're born with.
- 3:12Nope.
- 3:13It's something you build every time you choose
- 3:17to keep moving forward, despite the obstacles standing
- 3:21in your way, and I know there can
- 3:23be a lot of them.
- 3:25Number one, difficult seasons strengthen character.
- 3:30Easy seasons reveal comfort, but difficult seasons reveal
- 3:37character.
- 3:38Challenges expose what truly matters and help develop
- 3:42qualities that success alone never could bring forth.
- 3:48Growth often begins during life's hardest moments.
- 3:54Number two, guys, pressure develops resilience.
- 3:58Pressure tests your ability to adapt and continue
- 4:02on.
- 4:03Each challenge you overcome increases your confidence level
- 4:07for the next one, and resilience grows through
- 4:11experiences.
- 4:13I think that's an important thing.
- 4:14A lot of people, they miss the fact
- 4:16that, you know, it happens, and there's like
- 4:20stages that it happens in, right?
- 4:22And so when we understand that, we can't
- 4:25skip steps.
- 4:27Number three, adversity reveals strength.
- 4:31Many people never realize how strong they truly
- 4:36are until life demands more from them.
- 4:40Difficult moments uncover abilities that remain hidden during
- 4:45easier times.
- 4:47Strength is often discovered rather than created.
- 4:52Every challenge, number four, contains a lesson.
- 4:56Every obstacle has something valuable to teach, looking
- 5:01for the lesson instead of dwelling on the
- 5:05problem.
- 5:06And that turns setbacks into opportunities for growth.
- 5:12Wisdom often comes disguised as difficulty.
- 5:19Number five, keep moving forward.
- 5:22Progress doesn't require giant leaps every day.
- 5:26Sometimes the greatest victory is refusing to quit.
- 5:32Small steps still move you closer to your
- 5:36destination.
- 5:37Small, consistent steps.
- 5:40Number six, focus on what you can control.
- 5:45Don't worry about what you can't.
- 5:49Energy spent worrying about what you cannot change
- 5:52rarely produces positive results.
- 5:55In fact, it causes more frustration.
- 5:57Focus instead on your attitude, your actions, and
- 6:01your choices.
- 6:03Control what belongs to you.
- 6:06And I think that's something, again, that a
- 6:08lot of people, you know, they get stuck
- 6:10on this, and the reason they get stuck
- 6:11is because they don't think they can make
- 6:13a change in their life, but really they
- 6:15can.
- 6:16Number seven, adapt instead of resisting.
- 6:20Life constantly changes, and flexibility allows us to
- 6:24grow with it.
- 6:27Resisting every change creates frustration, while adapting creates
- 6:31opportunity, growth, and this requires adjustment.
- 6:35And again, a lot of people don't seem
- 6:39to understand this.
- 6:41Number eight, resilience grows through repetition.
- 6:46Every challenge successfully faced strengthens your confidence.
- 6:53Repeated perseverance builds emotional endurance.
- 6:56That's important.
- 6:58The more you overcome, the stronger you become.
- 7:03But again, the first time you do it,
- 7:06it might seem like you're going nowhere, but
- 7:08you did make progress.
- 7:10It just might not have been the amount
- 7:13that you were hoping to make, but it's
- 7:15still progress.
- 7:17Number nine, growth often feels uncomfortable, and I've
- 7:20said this before.
- 7:21We have to practice getting comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 7:24Success does not start where we're comfortable.
- 7:26Personal growth stretches you beyond familiar routines.
- 7:34Discomfort is often evidence that meaningful change is
- 7:38taking place.
- 7:39I didn't say pain.
- 7:40I said discomfort.
- 7:41Don't mistake temporary discomfort for failure.
- 7:45It's not.
- 7:48Number 10, temporary struggles create permanent strength.
- 7:59Most difficult seasons eventually pass, but the strength
- 8:04you build remains forever.
- 8:07Every hardship leaves you better prepared for future
- 8:11challenges.
- 8:12Temporary discomfort often produces lasting growth.
- 8:17I think that's an important one.
- 8:19So to say, oh, my gosh, I'm in
- 8:20so much pain.
- 8:21You're in discomfort.
- 8:22You're not in pain.
- 8:23You're in discomfort.
- 8:25And I think that's an important piece that
- 8:28a lot of people, they miss.
- 8:30They put more emphasis on the fact that
- 8:32it's hurting.
- 8:33It might be discomforting, but they make it
- 8:35worse than what it is.
- 8:37Number 11, confidence follows persistence.
- 8:44Confidence develops by continuing through uncertainty.
- 8:50Each obstacle overcome by you reminds us that
- 8:57you are capable of more than you once
- 9:00believed.
- 9:01And that can create a whole domino effect,
- 9:03guys.
- 9:06Persistence alone creates self-belief.
- 9:12And if we can understand that belief is
- 9:15oftentimes the reason why we don't do something,
- 9:17because it's something we thought.
- 9:19We give up before we even start because
- 9:25of something we thought.
- 9:28Number 12, your response matters most.
- 9:34You cannot always control what happens around you.
- 9:39But you can always choose your responses and
- 9:43how you interact.
- 9:45A thoughtful response creates better outcomes than an
- 9:51emotional reaction.
- 9:53Your attitude shapes your future.
- 9:57Progress requires courage.
- 9:59Number 13, I didn't say it was going
- 10:02to be easy.
- 10:02I said it requires courage.
- 10:08I said it requires courage.
- 10:12Progress always requires courage.
- 10:14Fear often appears whenever meaningful growth begins.
- 10:22Courage doesn't eliminate fear, guys.
- 10:24It simply refuses to let fear make the
- 10:27decisions.
- 10:28I think that's probably the most important thing
- 10:31for us to understand.
- 10:32Fear is false evidence appearing real.
- 10:35And what we perceive and what we create
- 10:39in our mind can make this huge difference
- 10:42in our lives.
- 10:43And it's not because we want to be
- 10:47fearful.
- 10:50Our surroundings cause it.
- 10:53Our internal beliefs cause it.
- 10:58But we can get out of fear just
- 10:59as quickly as we got into it.
- 11:03Number 14, I invite you to stay committed.
- 11:09Committed.
- 11:12Commitment carries you through days when motivation disappears.
- 11:21Continue honoring your goals even when progress feels
- 11:25slow.
- 11:26I know we've all been through this.
- 11:30Some progress is better than no progress.
- 11:32I think that's a very important thing.
- 11:38Consistency always wins in the long run.
- 11:43Now, it may appear to not win in
- 11:45the short run, but it always wins in
- 11:47the long run.
- 11:48And I think that's a big thing for
- 11:49us to understand, that it happens that way
- 11:55if we truly believe it does.
- 12:00Always wins in the long run.
- 12:02But sometimes we self-doubt.
- 12:09And once we self-doubt, our energy changes.
- 12:12And when our energy changes, it also affects
- 12:16what people perceive about us.
- 12:21Number 15, guys.
- 12:25Every setback is temporary.
- 12:28Just like rain.
- 12:29After the rain finishes, the sun comes out
- 12:32tomorrow.
- 12:33We all know the song from Annie, right?
- 12:34The sun always comes out tomorrow.
- 12:36Maybe it's not tomorrow, but it's the next
- 12:37day.
- 12:37Eventually it comes out.
- 12:38That's the point.
- 12:39The sun always comes out after the rain
- 12:41eventually.
- 12:42No difficult season lasts forever.
- 12:46Every setback eventually becomes part of your story.
- 12:51Instead of your current reality.
- 12:56That's an interesting one to think of.
- 12:59Keep believing that better days are ahead and
- 13:05they will be.
- 13:06I know it might sound like they're not,
- 13:09but I'm here to tell you that they
- 13:11are really around you.
- 13:14But you got to believe that very, very
- 13:17strongly.
- 13:18Number 16.
- 13:21Build emotional strength.
- 13:24Emotional strength develops one decision at a time.
- 13:30Every challenge you face without giving up increases
- 13:34your ability to handle the next one.
- 13:38Strong emotions become powerful when guided by wisdom.
- 13:42Instead of impulse.
- 13:45I know impulse is something a lot of
- 13:47us go to.
- 13:49It's very quick.
- 13:50It doesn't need a lot of thought.
- 13:53But it's not going to be the best
- 13:56for us in the long term.
- 13:58I think if we can vow right now
- 14:00that even though some things are going to
- 14:03be hard, I'd rather have them be hard
- 14:05so the long term can be easier.
- 14:08I think that's a very important thing to
- 14:11understand.
- 14:13Number 17, guys.
- 14:15Please keep improving.
- 14:18Every day of your life offers yet another
- 14:21opportunity to become a better version of yourself.
- 14:29Even the smallest improvements create momentum when you
- 14:35repeat them consistently.
- 14:38I talked about bank accounts and how even
- 14:41the smallest amount of interest can eventually compound.
- 14:46Progress never requires perfection.
- 14:50Only commitment, consistency, and structure.
- 14:57Commitment.
- 15:00Why is it people don't want to commit?
- 15:03They figure they could take the shortcut.
- 15:06Other people have taken it.
- 15:07Or they've seen other people take it.
- 15:08They think, well, gee, I could do that
- 15:09too.
- 15:09I could take the shortcut.
- 15:13But they don't realize that the shortcut is
- 15:18actually going to cause others more pain and
- 15:21discomfort.
- 15:22And it will also cause themselves more pain
- 15:25and discomfort.
- 15:25Because it looks great on the other side
- 15:28of the fence.
- 15:29The grass is always greener on the other
- 15:30side of the fence.
- 15:31But really, grass isn't any greener.
- 15:34It's really just a perception.
- 15:37But it always seems like the grass is
- 15:38greener on the other side.
- 15:41Number 18, guys.
- 15:43Don't quit early.
- 15:44Don't go home early.
- 15:46Many people stop just before they would have
- 15:50experienced a breakthrough.
- 15:53I've said this before, guys.
- 15:54The only difference between success and non-success
- 15:57is successful people have just learned to hang
- 15:59on a little bit longer.
- 16:02That's it, guys.
- 16:03That's it.
- 16:05Difficult moments often make success feel farther away
- 16:09than it really is.
- 16:12Stay committed.
- 16:13Because, you see, persistence frequently rewards those who
- 16:18refuse to quit.
- 16:22Okay?
- 16:23I'm not talking about ‑‑ I'm not talking
- 16:25like about a pause.
- 16:28I'm talking about something whereby you're quitting and
- 16:33you're not coming back.
- 16:34I think that's a very important thing.
- 16:38Persistence changes outcomes.
- 16:42Success is rarely determined by talent.
- 16:46Rarely by talent alone.
- 16:50It often belongs to those who continue working
- 16:56after others have stopped.
- 17:00Persistence transforms possibility into reality.
- 17:06I think that's an important thing to know
- 17:11that our belief is all we need to
- 17:14create the reality.
- 17:17That's it, guys.
- 17:19Our belief.
- 17:20That's all we need to do to create
- 17:24the reality.
- 17:25Number 20, guys.
- 17:28Face discomfort.
- 17:30Growth lives beyond your comfort zone.
- 17:33Every uncomfortable conversation, new experience, or difficult challenge
- 17:39expands your capacity for future success in new
- 17:43horizons.
- 17:47Temporary discomfort creates lasting confidence.
- 17:53So we've got to be willing to have
- 17:55a little bit of discomfort so we can
- 17:56have some joy later on.
- 17:58I think that's a big one.
- 17:59Number 21, stay focused.
- 18:01Distractions appear whenever you're making meaningful progress.
- 18:10Keeping your attention on your purpose prevents temporary
- 18:16obstacles from becoming permanent detours.
- 18:23Focus protects momentum.
- 18:26All right?
- 18:28I'm not going to tell you momentum is
- 18:29easy.
- 18:30But once you get it going, guys, it's
- 18:32like, oh, wow, I didn't know I could
- 18:33do this.
- 18:35I never knew that I could do this.
- 18:37But you can do it when you believe
- 18:39in yourself.
- 18:42Number 22, guys, gets you right to that
- 18:45point.
- 18:45Believe in the process.
- 18:50When you believe in something, it will work.
- 18:57Your belief, your blind faith will build confidence
- 19:05and will get it to work.
- 19:06Not every day will produce visible results.
- 19:10Sorry, guys.
- 19:11Trust that your consistent effort is creating progress
- 19:15beneath the surface, even when you cannot immediately
- 19:18see it like the icebergs, right?
- 19:21Great achievements are built through patience.
- 19:28Number 23, guys, learn from the mistakes.
- 19:33Okay?
- 19:33Mistakes are valuable.
- 19:36And they're teachers.
- 19:38And they help you when you're willing to
- 19:42study them.
- 19:43Instead of dismissing them or hiding them, every
- 19:48lesson learned improves your future decisions.
- 19:52Failure becomes useful when it produces growth.
- 19:56If we use failure as a tool, we
- 20:00can say, wait a minute, this isn't working
- 20:01for me, but I can figure this out,
- 20:03or I can come from here, or I
- 20:04can do this, or I can do that.
- 20:05I think that's a very ‑‑ I think
- 20:07that's an important piece, guys.
- 20:10Very, very important piece.
- 20:13Number 24, keep showing up.
- 20:18Anybody say, well, gee, it's not working.
- 20:19I'm telling you to keep showing up.
- 20:23That's important.
- 20:26Number 25, consistency separates those who dream from
- 20:31those who achieve.
- 20:32You need two things for success.
- 20:34You need structure and you need consistency.
- 20:39Without those, unfortunately, you're not going anywhere.
- 20:43And if you achieve success once, there's no
- 20:46reason to say it's going to happen again.
- 20:48That might have just been luck.
- 20:50To keep having success, you need structure and
- 20:53you need consistency.
- 20:54Okay?
- 20:54Number 29, every day you continue moving forward
- 20:58strengthens your resilience and your confidence, showing up
- 21:04is often the hardest but most important step
- 21:07in your life.
- 21:09But it's often the one that many people
- 21:11miss, and they miss it because of, you
- 21:15know, what they're doing or, again, a perception.
- 21:20They miss it because of that.
- 21:22That's the whole reason that they miss it.
- 21:25Number 25, progress over perfection.
- 21:32Waiting for perfect conditions usually leads to an
- 21:36action.
- 21:38In other words, procrastination.
- 21:40Small, consistent progress always outperforms perfect plans that
- 21:45are never started.
- 21:47Momentum is created through action, through action.
- 21:53Number 26, stay disciplined, guys.
- 21:56Discipline continues working long after motivation fades, which
- 22:00it can based on your moods.
- 22:03It keeps you moving when emotions change and
- 22:09circumstances become difficult.
- 22:12Long-term success depends on disciplined habits.
- 22:17So build discipline early and you'll be happy
- 22:21with your life.
- 22:22Extremely happy.
- 22:24Number 27, keep your vision alive.
- 22:30Your vision gives meaning to today's effort.
- 22:34When challenges arise, remembering your purpose from your
- 22:39core values helps you continue moving toward your
- 22:43goals.
- 22:44Never lose sight of the future you're building.
- 22:49Number 28, hard lessons from the seasons that
- 22:56are frustrating, they end.
- 22:59They end.
- 23:01But you need to learn what those lessons
- 23:03are.
- 23:04You can throw away the emotional turmoil from
- 23:07it, how you felt bad.
- 23:09Learn the lessons so you don't do it
- 23:10again, so you don't feel bad again.
- 23:13Every storm eventually passes.
- 23:16Difficult chapters prepare you for better ones that
- 23:21are still ahead of you.
- 23:23Hope grows when you remember that no season
- 23:28lasts forever.
- 23:30Number 29, strong people keep growing.
- 23:34Strength is not measured by avoiding challenges, but
- 23:38by continuing to learn from them.
- 23:41Every obstacle provides another opportunity to become yet
- 23:46wiser, stronger, and more resilient.
- 23:49Growth never truly ends.
- 23:51We're always learning in life.
- 23:54Number 30, resilience always pays off.
- 23:57Every difficult season leaves you stronger than ever
- 24:03before, if you choose to keep growing.
- 24:06That means you have to learn the lesson,
- 24:09okay?
- 24:11That's key.
- 24:12The resilience you build today becomes the confidence
- 24:17you rely on tomorrow.
- 24:20Never, never, never underestimate the value of refusing
- 24:26to give up.
- 24:31I'm not saying you can't take a rest.
- 24:33I didn't say that.
- 24:35Giving up means you're not going back anymore.
- 24:37That's not taking a rest.
- 24:38That means you've closed your book.
- 24:40You're not doing it anymore.
- 24:43I've had people before that I've worked with,
- 24:46and they get frustrated.
- 24:48And I try to comfort them and let
- 24:51them know that you're not alone.
- 24:55And you may not be happy with the
- 24:57way this is, but this is the process.
- 25:04As I get ready to close the show
- 25:06out today, and as I conclude with the
- 25:11episode, remember that resilience is not about avoiding
- 25:17hardship.
- 25:19No.
- 25:22It is, however, about becoming stronger because of
- 25:26it.
- 25:27Every challenge you face, every obstacle you overcome,
- 25:32and every lesson you learn is shaping the
- 25:36person you're becoming.
- 25:40While difficult seasons may test your patience many
- 25:45times, they also will help you to develop
- 25:48your character, strengthen your confidence, and prepare you
- 25:54for opportunities that could never have existed without
- 25:59the journey.
- 26:00Now, what I want to say to you
- 26:01is that what you do in private eventually
- 26:06filters to your public life.
- 26:10When people see how you are, okay, that's
- 26:14one thing, right?
- 26:15But if they see how you are outside
- 26:17of a crowd, they see your true character
- 26:21when you're not trying to be on stage.
- 26:23Don't ever measure your progress only by what
- 26:27you accomplish.
- 26:31Please measure it by who you're becoming along
- 26:35the way.
- 26:38And another important point, ladies and gentlemen, I
- 26:41ask you to please continue focusing on what
- 26:45you can control.
- 26:47Keep learning from every experience.
- 26:52Stay disciplined in your daily actions.
- 26:58And remember, ladies and gentlemen, never, never, never
- 27:04allow temporary setbacks to convince you that your
- 27:11future has been already decided for you.
