- 1:35Speaker 3: just ask that we open in a word of prayer.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Our Father in heaven, we are so grateful. We are
- 1:43Speaker 3: humbled by your mercy and grace and that it has
- 1:47Speaker 3: pleased you yet again this day that you gather us
- 1:51Speaker 3: together in your sanctuary for the sole purpose of worshiping
- 1:56Speaker 3: you and bringing glory and honor only to your holy
- 2:00Speaker 3: name that in all that will do this morning that
- 2:04Speaker 3: Christ alone will be glorified that his name will be
- 2:08Speaker 3: lifted up we ask that you begin with us and
- 2:13Speaker 3: end with us.

- 2:22Speaker 3: Hillview Baptist Church We want to welcome you, and at
- 2:27Speaker 3: a later stage, that shall be done in a special way.
- 2:32Speaker 3: My name is Gershom Chirombo, and I'll be your song
- 2:35Speaker 3: leader this morning. Our opening hymn that we'll be singing
- 2:44Speaker 3: this morning is a majestic hymn penned by Isaac Watts,
- 2:50Speaker 3: a hymn he penned in 1798. It is said that
- 2:56Speaker 3: he wrote this hymn in preparation for a communion service
- 3:02Speaker 3: and that this hymn is based on Galatians 6 verse 14.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'll ask that you join me in standing as we
- 3:11Speaker 3: sing this hymn together when I survey the wondrous cross.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Kindly note that we are going to sing it to
- 3:21Speaker 3: the tune.
- 3:22Speaker 4: When I survey the wondrous cross.
- 3:28Speaker 3: How many of us are familiar with that tune by
- 3:30Speaker 3: Show of Hands? Please join me in standing as we
- 3:33Speaker 3: sing this hymn together and the choir will lead us.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Serving the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Thy riches give, thy comforts But I should pause, stand
- 4:44Speaker 5: in the cross, for Christ my God.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Oh, never think. most high sacrifice stand to his ground.
- 5:14Speaker 7: See from his name his hands his feet sorrow.
- 5:26Speaker 8: And love come before.
- 5:36Speaker 6: He is such love and store of peace for those
- 5:46Speaker 6: who long for him. O nature mine, that with an
- 6:06Speaker 6: offering far to serve. My life, my home.
- 6:38Speaker 9: Amen.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'll kindly ask that you continue to stand as we
- 6:44Speaker 3: sing together our second hymn, projected yet again, titled, I
- 6:51Speaker 3: Saw a Wayward Traveller. I saw a wayward traveller. And
- 6:58Speaker 3: the purposes of the song and the manner in which
- 7:01Speaker 3: it is sung, I'll kindly ask with permission from the
- 7:05Speaker 3: elders that it is sung in a rather country-like manner
- 7:09Speaker 3: as we sing it. I saw a wayward traveler. As
- 7:12Speaker 3: we praise our God again. So choir, please lead us
- 7:17Speaker 3: as we sing this.
- 7:30Speaker 7: The wayward traveler, in time had come his time. And
- 7:35Speaker 7: scrubbing up the mountain, he seemed that.
- 7:39Speaker 6: He was found. His path was made, and his strength
- 7:45Speaker 6: was almost gone. They shouted as he journeyed, deliver us
- 7:52Speaker 6: you come. Hey, hounds of victory. Oh, glory, crowns of victory,
- 8:02Speaker 6: as shall be. The Sabbath, Sabbath night, he bestowed on
- 8:10Speaker 6: all his crowns. His countenance born and dusted, he says
- 8:15Speaker 6: it very strong. And in the presence of God, for
- 8:21Speaker 6: he was waiting for, to shout it out again in
- 8:27Speaker 6: the land. There is a nation in violence and death.
- 8:55Speaker 6: There is a king of war. There's no disease and death.
- 9:00Speaker 6: There's no shouting of eternity.
- 9:04Speaker 7: There's no deliverance and no death.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Thank you. I'm so victory, I shall win. Yes, it's
- 9:56Speaker 6: all the same to me. Yes, I'm a man of God.
- 10:01Speaker 6: And I don't want the angels. I'm not going to fall.
- 10:06Speaker 6: I'm not going to fall. I'm not going to fall.
- 10:11Speaker 6: I'm not going to fall. I'm not going to fall.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Pounds of victory. Pounds of glory. Pounds of victory. I
- 10:26Speaker 6: shall praise thee, my heaven's golden fire. Stand up on
- 10:36Speaker 6: that shore. Jesus has redeemed us from sin. I'm so
- 10:50Speaker 6: proud of you. I'm so proud of you. Amen.
- 11:25Speaker 3: We will sing this third hymn together, which is the
- 11:30Speaker 3: song of the month, Behold Our God, and then we
- 11:34Speaker 3: shall be seated after we have sung that song. Who
- 11:39Speaker 3: has held the oceans in his hands? who has numbered
- 11:45Speaker 3: every grain, every grain of sand. Kings and nations tremble
- 11:51Speaker 3: at his voice. All creation rises to rejoice. Behold our God,
- 11:56Speaker 3: seated on his throne. Come, let us adore him.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Behold our King.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Nothing can compare.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Come, let us adore him.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I'll ask the choir to lead us.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Who has held the oceans in his hands?
- 12:23Speaker 4: Who has numbed every grain of sand? Kings and nations
- 12:41Speaker 4: tremble at his voice.
- 12:47Speaker 6: All creation rises to rejoice. Behold our God seated on
- 12:57Speaker 6: his throne.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Come, let us.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Adore Him. Behold our King.
- 13:13Speaker 7: Nothing can compare.
- 13:16Speaker 6: Come, let us adore Him. Who has given counsel to
- 13:30Speaker 6: the Lord? Who can teach the one who knows all things?
- 13:41Speaker 7: Who can follow all his wondrous things?
- 13:48Speaker 6: The Lord our God, seated on his throne, Nothing can compare.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Nothing can compare. Nothing can compare. Nothing can compare. God
- 14:40Speaker 6: is gentle, humble to the prayer. Jesus, Savior, risen now
- 14:51Speaker 6: to reign.
- 14:54Speaker 7: Behold our God, seated on His throne.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Come, let us adore Him.
- 15:13Speaker 7: Nothing can compare Come let us adore You will reign
- 15:29Speaker 7: forever You will reign forever You will reign forever You
- 15:47Speaker 7: will reign forever God seated on His throne Come let
- 16:04Speaker 7: us adore Him Behold.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Our King Nothing.
- 16:15Speaker 7: Can compare Come let us adore Him Behold our God
- 16:28Speaker 7: Seated on His.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Throne Come let us adore Him Behold.
- 16:41Speaker 7: Our King Nothing can compare Amen.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Please be seated.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And as we are sitting, I'll encourage the ashes to
- 17:02Speaker 3: bring people up front. So there's some spaces. So what
- 17:05Speaker 3: I would kindly ask you to do is kindly move
- 17:08Speaker 3: to the ends of where you're seated, towards the tent.
- 17:12Speaker 1: The side area.
- 17:13Speaker 3: So that you create space for those that are coming in.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I don't see anyone moving.
- 17:25Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Just create some space.
- 17:29Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 18:01Speaker 1: For intercessory prayer, we have the following items. Under praise item,
- 18:11Speaker 1: let us thank God for the reach of the Reformed
- 18:17Speaker 1: Studios Ministry in the first month of operation, totaling thousands
- 18:25Speaker 1: of views of content that was shared across various social
- 18:32Speaker 1: media platforms. Let us thank God for answering prayer beyond
- 18:38Speaker 1: what we could have asked or imagined and pray for
- 18:43Speaker 1: the efficacy of the messages being shared that the word
- 18:49Speaker 1: of the Lord will bear fruit in the hearts of
- 18:53Speaker 1: those being reached out to. Then the second item of
- 18:58Speaker 1: praise is the main had the men's breakfast yesterday. So
- 19:03Speaker 1: we praise God for the successful breakfast that took place yesterday.
- 19:08Speaker 1: And let's pray that God's word will have an impact
- 19:13Speaker 1: even on the lives of the men that were in attendance.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Then items for prayer. Pastor Mbewe leaves for Zimbabwe this

- 19:37Speaker 1: So let us pray for their traveling Macy's as they
- 19:42Speaker 1: make their way to Zimbabwe and their stay as well
- 19:46Speaker 1: as their return trip. Then let us pray for Kafir
- 19:54Speaker 1: Reform Baptist Church as they prepare to ordain Jonathan Tani
- 20:03Speaker 1: as their pastor this morning. Let us pray that the
- 20:08Speaker 1: new pastor will gel with the leadership and membership there,
- 20:14Speaker 1: and that he will be used by God mightily as
- 20:18Speaker 1: a laborer in preaching his word. Then let us pray
- 20:25Speaker 1: for the annual Reformed Conference that will take place in
- 20:30Speaker 1: the final week of August, as I had earlier announced.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Let us pray for the preparation to go on smoothly
- 20:40Speaker 1: and also for the ministry of God's word as it
- 20:46Speaker 1: will be brought by various speakers, one of the main
- 20:50Speaker 1: speakers being Pastor Jeremy Walker from UK. Then let's pray
- 20:57Speaker 1: for the children's ministry members. as they work in the
- 21:03Speaker 1: background to finalize on logistics, programs and activities, and other
- 21:10Speaker 1: preparations in readiness for the Vocational Bible School that is
- 21:16Speaker 1: due in August on the 10th, which is, I think,
- 21:23Speaker 1: the Wednesday, and it will run through to August 12th,
- 21:29Speaker 1: which is a Saturday. In the same vein, let us
- 21:34Speaker 1: pray also for the success of the VBS training workshop
- 21:40Speaker 1: scheduled for Saturday, 5th August, from 8 hours to 10 hours.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Pray that there will be a good attendance from both members, non-members,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and those that would volunteer to be part of the
- 21:56Speaker 1: team and be able to help them during the time
- 21:59Speaker 1: that they will be having the vocational Bible school in August.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Let us continue praying for the Lord's leading as we
- 22:13Speaker 1: continue to pray and think about the office for diaconates,
- 22:18Speaker 1: the men that we will nominate for this office that
- 22:23Speaker 1: God will lead us and grant us the sense of
- 22:27Speaker 1: oneness of mind and spirit and purpose even as we
- 22:31Speaker 1: seek his face as a church with regard to this
- 22:36Speaker 1: office for deacons. All right, may I ask that we
- 22:41Speaker 1: do pray together.
- 22:45Speaker 9: Shall we pray?
- 22:48Speaker 1: Our blessed God, Father in heaven, we come again before
- 22:51Speaker 1: your praises this morning. We truly want to thank you
- 22:57Speaker 1: for the way that you have been with us so far.
- 23:01Speaker 1: We thank you for the way that you have drawn
- 23:04Speaker 1: our minds and our hearts in praising you, our great God,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and the way that you have abided with us, even
- 23:16Speaker 1: from the start of our service this morning to this time.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Our Father, we want to thank you for the way
- 23:25Speaker 1: that you have continued to use the Reformed studios and
- 23:31Speaker 1: much more the way that you have been pleased that
- 23:35Speaker 1: through various media platforms that we've been able to reach
- 23:41Speaker 1: a thousand plus viewers. We thank you for this work,
- 23:48Speaker 1: O God. We thank you for this ministry. We want
- 23:53Speaker 1: to pray and ask, O God, that you will be
- 23:56Speaker 1: pleased to use the content that is being shared that
- 24:02Speaker 1: men and women might be reached with the gospel, but
- 24:06Speaker 1: above all that your word may bear fruit even upon
- 24:12Speaker 1: the lives of those that tune in to listen and
- 24:16Speaker 1: also being shared among other platforms. Our Father, we continue
- 24:22Speaker 1: to look to you that you may continue to add
- 24:26Speaker 1: even more blessings, causes, who are members to time and
- 24:32Speaker 1: again constantly share this content out, that your word, O God,
- 24:39Speaker 1: may be known across our world, across our country, across
- 24:46Speaker 1: our neighbors, and across every person that we are in
- 24:51Speaker 1: contact with, that, O God, you'll be pleased to use
- 24:55Speaker 1: this content, that your name will be glorified.
- 25:00Speaker 10: Our God.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Our Father, we also want to praise you for the
- 25:05Speaker 1: way that you undertook for us as men yesterday. We
- 25:11Speaker 1: thank you for the success in the breakfast that we had.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And we want to pray and ask our God that
- 25:20Speaker 1: you will be pleased in due season to be able
- 25:25Speaker 1: to utilize what was shared, our God, to even touch
- 25:31Speaker 1: the lives of our men. And through them being transformed
- 25:37Speaker 1: and being changed, might be able to touch the lives
- 25:41Speaker 1: of those who are under their roof in their homes
- 25:46Speaker 1: and also in the society where you have placed them.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Our Father, we want to commit Pastor Mbeo and his
- 25:54Speaker 1: family in your hands that even as he undertakes the
- 25:59Speaker 1: trip this week to Zimbabwe where he will be preaching
- 26:04Speaker 1: at Berean Baptist Church. We want to commit his travel
- 26:11Speaker 1: that you will grant him safety, but much more we
- 26:15Speaker 1: want to pray and ask that you also bless the
- 26:19Speaker 1: ministry of your word even as you use your man
- 26:25Speaker 1: servant in the midst of our brethren in Zimbabwe. We
- 26:30Speaker 1: pray also that they will know of your protection, especially
- 26:35Speaker 1: the fact that we know that Zimbabwe will be taking
- 26:38Speaker 1: their vote sometime this coming month in August. So we
- 26:45Speaker 1: pray for their safety as well, that, oh God, you
- 26:49Speaker 1: will also not only undertake for their safe passage, but
- 26:53Speaker 1: that you also grant them a good stay in Zimbabwe.
- 26:59Speaker 1: We also want to join our sister church, Kafir Reform
- 27:03Speaker 1: Baptist Church, remembering them this day, even as they set
- 27:09Speaker 1: aside our brother, Tani, to be a full-time pastor of
- 27:16Speaker 1: the church, that, O God, your name will be glorified,
- 27:22Speaker 1: even as our saints rejoice in the measure of your
- 27:25Speaker 1: goodness that you have shown to them, being able to
- 27:30Speaker 1: draw their minds as one, in being able to select
- 27:37Speaker 1: Antony to be their church pastor. Father, we pray for him,
- 27:43Speaker 1: committing him in your hands, that God you will bless
- 27:48Speaker 1: his ministry in the midst and lives of the brethren
- 27:52Speaker 1: at Reformed Baptist Church, that even as he labors for you,
- 27:58Speaker 1: in the amidst that you use him or God to
- 28:04Speaker 1: extend your work at Kafir Reformed Baptist Church and also
- 28:09Speaker 1: that you unify the church together that they will be
- 28:13Speaker 1: able to work as a team with the other elders
- 28:17Speaker 1: but also being able to work together with the church
- 28:21Speaker 1: members as they fold their sleeves together and seek to
- 28:26Speaker 1: extend your work even in Kafue District, as being the
- 28:32Speaker 1: only reformed church there. We plead and ask on their behalf,
- 28:37Speaker 1: O God, that may you be merciful upon our brethren,
- 28:42Speaker 1: that to that end, that you indeed grant them such
- 28:47Speaker 1: a blessing that only flows from heaven above. Our Father,
- 28:54Speaker 1: we also want to remember the reformed conference that is
- 29:01Speaker 1: yet to take place in the last week of August.
- 29:04Speaker 1: We want to commit the main speaker, our brother Jeremy Walker,
- 29:11Speaker 1: coming from UK in our hands, that even as he
- 29:15Speaker 1: makes preparations of the material to be shared in our midst,
- 29:20Speaker 1: when he does come, we ask of God that he
- 29:23Speaker 1: will be with our brother and We want to pray
- 29:26Speaker 1: and ask our God that he may know the measure
- 29:28Speaker 1: of your goodness upon him, sustain him with good health
- 29:32Speaker 1: through the time of the conference and throughout that conference period,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but also that you will grant him safety as well.
- 29:42Speaker 1: We know that there will be many people that will
- 29:45Speaker 1: also make travel within our country and also outside our country.
- 29:53Speaker 1: We ask that they will also know safe passage. We
- 29:57Speaker 1: ask that you help them in their preparations For this conference.
- 30:01Speaker 1: But much more Lord. That you will cause us. That
- 30:05Speaker 1: we may all be in attendance. In great numbers. That
- 30:08Speaker 1: we may be able to rejoice together. In the goodness
- 30:13Speaker 1: of our Lord. In our lives. The goodness of our God.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Even in our state. And in our world. And much
- 30:21Speaker 1: more that even as we learn together. From your main servant.
- 30:25Speaker 1: That you would have selected. Even those that you have selected.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Who will handle. various seminars and various schools that, oh God,
- 30:35Speaker 1: you will be pleased to use our brethren to that
- 30:38Speaker 1: effect that, Lord, your word may come alive, but your
- 30:44Speaker 1: word may also touch many of those that will be
- 30:49Speaker 1: in attendance during this conference. Our Father, we also want
- 30:55Speaker 1: to remember the desire of our children's ministry in seeking
- 31:02Speaker 1: to reach out the hearts of these our children within
- 31:06Speaker 1: our church and to the greater extent those within our community.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That even as they have made plans for the vocational
- 31:16Speaker 1: Bible school in August, we want to pray for their preparations.
- 31:21Speaker 1: We pray for their logistics arrangements. activities that are being
- 31:27Speaker 1: put in place and the planning behind the background that
- 31:32Speaker 1: eternal God will be with our brethren even as they
- 31:35Speaker 1: do so. We want to pray for them particularly that
- 31:40Speaker 1: even as they have remarked this coming Saturday as a
- 31:43Speaker 1: day of workshop to be able to be equipped, oh God,
- 31:49Speaker 1: for how they will be able to be of a
- 31:52Speaker 1: greater service in the lives of these children during the
- 31:57Speaker 1: time that they will have the conference. We want to
- 31:59Speaker 1: ask that you bless their workshop, bless the person that
- 32:04Speaker 1: has been earmarked to take them through this workshop. We pray,
- 32:08Speaker 1: O God, that you will cause many to be in attendance,
- 32:13Speaker 1: cause both the volunteers also to be part of this activity,
- 32:19Speaker 1: O God, that together they will be able to join
- 32:24Speaker 1: forces and join hands of God that they'll be able
- 32:28Speaker 1: to accomplish that which you have desired and purposed in
- 32:33Speaker 1: being able to have this workshop as a success but
- 32:38Speaker 1: also the event itself that it might be of a
- 32:42Speaker 1: great success as well. We want to pray that through
- 32:49Speaker 1: the ministry of the children to the lives of these
- 32:52Speaker 1: young ones that you might be pleased to use your word,
- 32:56Speaker 1: O God, to speak to the young ones. For, Lord,
- 33:00Speaker 1: we pray that your word may never return void, but
- 33:04Speaker 1: it might accomplish that which you have willed and purposed,
- 33:08Speaker 1: even in the lives of our children, even in the
- 33:11Speaker 1: lives of our young ones, that even as they are
- 33:13Speaker 1: being taken through your word, O God, it is our
- 33:18Speaker 1: anticipation that, looking forward to your great working among them,
- 33:23Speaker 1: O God, that you bring about salvation even in the
- 33:27Speaker 1: lives of these children. Our Father, now we want to pray,
- 33:33Speaker 1: asking that even as you continue to prepare us as
- 33:37Speaker 1: a church with regards to the day that we have
- 33:41Speaker 1: earmarked for the nomination of the deacons for this church
- 33:47Speaker 1: sometime next month on the 13th, We want to pray,
- 33:51Speaker 1: O God, that you may continue to lead us as
- 33:54Speaker 1: a church as we continue to seek your mind, O God,
- 33:58Speaker 1: among the men that you have chosen for this office,
- 34:03Speaker 1: O God. We pray, asking, O Lord, that you will
- 34:08Speaker 1: lead us in such a way that we'll be able
- 34:11Speaker 1: to choose these men who you have purposely chosen that
- 34:17Speaker 1: they'll be able, O God, to serve in this office.
- 34:20Speaker 1: We thank you for what we've been able to, through
- 34:25Speaker 1: the materials that we've been taken through and the preparations
- 34:29Speaker 1: that have been going through being exposed to your word
- 34:33Speaker 1: as we sought to try and appreciate the biblical context
- 34:37Speaker 1: of this office. And now, our Father, we seek your
- 34:40Speaker 1: face that you will lead us in all of this process,
- 34:45Speaker 1: our God. Our Father, now we want to pray. asking,
- 34:49Speaker 1: remembering the Pastor Vody, we commit him into your hands,
- 34:56Speaker 1: O God, that even as our brother will stand forth
- 35:00Speaker 1: before us to bring forth the word that you have
- 35:03Speaker 1: placed even upon his heart to share with us this morning,
- 35:09Speaker 1: that you may use your man servant to speak to
- 35:12Speaker 1: us all. Meet us at our points of need, O God,
- 35:16Speaker 1: that we may hear your voice. even through your manservant.
- 35:21Speaker 1: We want to pray also remembering that later on, tithes
- 35:24Speaker 1: and offerings will be given, and we want to commit
- 35:27Speaker 1: these in your hands that will be used for the
- 35:30Speaker 1: extension of your work here below, but much more to
- 35:33Speaker 1: the praise and glory of your holy name. And so
- 35:37Speaker 1: we pray that you bless the reading of your word,
- 35:40Speaker 1: and much more that you also continue to use him
- 35:43Speaker 1: in our brother Geshem as he leads us in worship.
- 35:47Speaker 1: drawing our hearts and our minds closer to you, our
- 35:51Speaker 1: great God, that, Father, you will see it fit to
- 35:55Speaker 1: accept this even from the depth of our hearts. For
- 35:58Speaker 1: this we do plead asking in Christ's name.
- 36:01Speaker 6: Amen.
- 36:02Speaker 11: Good morning.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 36:15Speaker 12: Our consecutive Bible reading finds us in 2 Corinthians chapter 4.
- 36:22Speaker 12: Before I proceed, I'll ask those who do not have
- 36:25Speaker 12: Bibles to indicate so by a show of hands, and
- 36:30Speaker 12: a Bible can be provided for you. So anyone who
- 36:34Speaker 12: does not have a Bible, please, you may indicate by
- 36:38Speaker 12: raising your hand, and the ushers will provide one for you.
- 36:43Speaker 12: Be reminded that these Bibles are to remain behind after
- 36:46Speaker 12: the service. You can leave them on your seat or
- 36:48Speaker 12: under the seat. But if you saw or wish to
- 36:51Speaker 12: have a Bible that you can carry home, you can
- 36:54Speaker 12: see any of the ushers and one can be provided.
- 36:56Speaker 12: 2 Chronicles chapter 4, we'll commence reading at verse 1.
- 37:05Speaker 12: He made an altar of bronze, 20 cubits long and
- 37:08Speaker 12: 20 cubits wide and 10 cubits high. Then he made
- 37:12Speaker 12: the sea of cast metal. It was round, ten cubits
- 37:16Speaker 12: from brim to brim, and five cubits high, and a
- 37:19Speaker 12: line of thirty cubits measured its circumference. Under it were
- 37:24Speaker 12: figures of gods, for ten cubits compassing the sea all around.
- 37:30Speaker 12: The gods were in two rows, cast with it when
- 37:34Speaker 12: it was cast. It stood on twelve oxen, three facing north,
- 37:39Speaker 12: three facing west, three facing south and three facing east.
- 37:44Speaker 12: The sea was set on them, and on their rear
- 37:47Speaker 12: parts were inward. Its thickness was a hand-breadth. Its brim
- 37:53Speaker 12: was made like the brim of a cup, like the
- 37:55Speaker 12: flower of a lily. It held three thousand baths. He
- 38:01Speaker 12: also made ten bases in which to wash, and set
- 38:04Speaker 12: five on the south side and five on the north side.
- 38:08Speaker 12: In these they were to rinse off what was used
- 38:10Speaker 12: for the burnt offering, and the sea was for the
- 38:13Speaker 12: priests to wash in. Verse 7. And he made ten
- 38:18Speaker 12: golden lampstands as prescribed and set them in the temple,
- 38:22Speaker 12: five on the south side and five on the north.
- 38:28Speaker 12: He also made ten tables and placed them in the temple,
- 38:32Speaker 12: five on the south side and five on the north.
- 38:35Speaker 12: And he made a hundred basins of gold. He made
- 38:39Speaker 12: the courts of the priests and the great courts and
- 38:42Speaker 12: doors for the courts and overlaid their doors with bronze.
- 38:46Speaker 12: And he set the sea at the southeast corner of
- 38:49Speaker 12: the house. Hiram also made the ports, the shovels and
- 38:53Speaker 12: the basins. So Hiram finished the work that he did
- 38:57Speaker 12: for King Solomon on the house of God. The two pillars,
- 39:01Speaker 12: the balls and the two capitals on the top of
- 39:03Speaker 12: the pillars and the two latticeworks to cover the two
- 39:06Speaker 12: balls of the capitals that were on the top of
- 39:10Speaker 12: the pillars, and the four hundred palm granites for the
- 39:13Speaker 12: two latticeworks, two rows of palm granites for each latticework,
- 39:18Speaker 12: to cover the two balls of the capitals that were
- 39:21Speaker 12: on the pillars. He made the stands also, and the
- 39:25Speaker 12: basins on the stands, and the one sea, and the
- 39:29Speaker 12: 12 oxen underneath it the pots the shovels the forks
- 39:34Speaker 12: and all the equipment for these huram abai made of
- 39:38Speaker 12: burnished bronze for king solomon for the house of the
- 39:42Speaker 12: lord verse 17 In the plain of the Jordan the
- 39:46Speaker 12: king cast them, in the clay ground between Sarkoth and Zerida.
- 39:51Speaker 12: Solomon made all these things in great quantities, for the
- 39:55Speaker 12: weight of the bronze was not sought. So Solomon made
- 39:59Speaker 12: all the vessels that were in the house of God,
- 40:02Speaker 12: the golden altar, the tables for the bread of the presence,
- 40:06Speaker 12: the lampstands and their lamps of pure gold, to burn
- 40:10Speaker 12: before the inner sanctuary as prescribed. the flowers, the lamps,
- 40:14Speaker 12: and the tongs of purest gold, the snaffers, basins, dishes
- 40:19Speaker 12: for incense, and firepans of pure gold, and the sockets
- 40:23Speaker 12: of the temple, for the inner doors to the most
- 40:26Speaker 12: holy place, and for the doors of the nave of
- 40:29Speaker 12: the temple were of gold.
- 40:46Speaker 3: We thank God for the reading of his word. As
- 40:50Speaker 3: has been indicated, bringing God's word to us this morning
- 40:54Speaker 3: is our brother, Dr.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Vody Bokom.
- 40:58Speaker 3: And before he comes up front, I'll kindly ask the
- 41:02Speaker 3: congregation to join me in standing as we sing together,
- 41:07Speaker 3: There is a fountain filled with blood, such a rich
- 41:13Speaker 3: and majestic hymn by William Please join me in standing.
- 41:18Speaker 1: The hymn will be beamed, projected. The Father will lead us.
- 41:35Speaker 13: There is a fountain filled with blood to unfold in
- 41:44Speaker 13: my mouth.
- 41:48Speaker 6: Unseen as blind.
- 41:50Speaker 13: Hidden in the.
- 41:54Speaker 6: Dark, whose soul the guilt is dead? Whose soul the
- 42:04Speaker 6: guilt is dead? Whose soul the guilt is dead? Unseen
- 42:17Speaker 6: as night, beneath the cloud, we saw the guilty stand.
- 42:25Speaker 6: The dying man rejoiced.
- 42:35Speaker 8: To see the fountain in his hand. Oh, I'm more
- 42:52Speaker 8: without love. Oh, I'm more without.
- 43:02Speaker 6: Love. Oh, I'm more without love. Oh, I'm more without love.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Dying blood, thy precious blood shall fill the new sea.
- 43:40Speaker 6: He said to sin no more He said to sin
- 43:47Speaker 6: no more He said to sin no more The church
- 44:08Speaker 6: of God is empty. I saw the stream, I saw.
- 44:24Speaker 7: The wings of Christ.
- 44:34Speaker 11: Redeeming love has made my feet. I shall be delighted.
- 44:42Speaker 11: I shall be delighted.
- 44:50Speaker 6: God shall be with you. God shall be with you.
- 45:04Speaker 6: God shall be with you. I'll sing the God to save.
- 45:43Speaker 6: I'll sing the God to save. I'll sing the God
- 45:54Speaker 6: to save.
- 46:07Speaker 9: Amen. Please take your seats.
- 46:11Speaker 2: And open to John chapter 19. John chapter 19. Beginning
- 46:23Speaker 2: at the end of verse 16. Very detailed. strange verse
- 46:29Speaker 2: break there. As we talked about this morning, the Bible
- 46:34Speaker 2: wasn't written with chapters and verses. We got to chapters
- 46:37Speaker 2: and verses only a few hundred years ago and they
- 46:40Speaker 2: are for the most part extremely useful and then there
- 46:43Speaker 2: are times like these where it's difficult.
- 46:47Speaker 9: So at the end of 16.
- 46:53Speaker 2: So they took Jesus and went out He went out, rather,
- 46:57Speaker 2: bearing his own cross to the place called the Place
- 47:00Speaker 2: of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There
- 47:06Speaker 2: they crucified him and with him two others, one on
- 47:10Speaker 2: either side and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an
- 47:15Speaker 2: inscription and put it on the cross. It read, Jesus
- 47:19Speaker 2: of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Many of the
- 47:23Speaker 2: Jews read this inscription. for the place where Jesus was
- 47:27Speaker 2: crucified was near the city, and it was written in
- 47:31Speaker 2: Aramaic and Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests
- 47:35Speaker 2: of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write the
- 47:38Speaker 2: king of the Jews, but rather this man said, I
- 47:42Speaker 2: am king of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written,
- 47:46Speaker 2: I have written. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they
- 47:51Speaker 2: took his garments and divided them into four parts. and
- 47:56Speaker 2: one part for each soldier, also his tunic. But the
- 48:01Speaker 2: tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
- 48:06Speaker 2: So they said to one another, Let us not tear it,
- 48:10Speaker 2: but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.
- 48:15Speaker 2: This was to fulfill the scripture which says, They divided
- 48:18Speaker 2: my garments among them, and for my clothing.
- 48:20Speaker 9: They cast lots. So the soldiers... did these things.
- 48:27Speaker 2: But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
- 48:31Speaker 2: and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and
- 48:35Speaker 2: Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple
- 48:40Speaker 2: whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Woman,
- 48:45Speaker 2: behold your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold
- 48:49Speaker 2: your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her
- 48:54Speaker 2: to his own May the Lord add a blessing to
- 48:59Speaker 2: the reading and the hearing of His Word.
- 49:02Speaker 9: Amen.
- 49:05Speaker 2: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is part of the most
- 49:13Speaker 2: significant occurrence in history. I say part of the most
- 49:19Speaker 2: significant occurrence because the crucifixion of Jesus is significant mainly
- 49:26Speaker 2: because of the resurrection of Jesus.
- 49:30Speaker 9: Amen? Many were crucified.
- 49:32Speaker 2: In fact, there are two who were crucified with Jesus
- 49:36Speaker 2: on either side of him. So crucifixion in and of itself,
- 49:42Speaker 2: does not bear that much significance. But the crucifixion of
- 49:46Speaker 2: Jesus bears more significance than any other event in the
- 49:53Speaker 2: history of mankind, arguably, because of its significance, because of
- 50:01Speaker 2: its meaning, because of its purpose, and because of what
- 50:06Speaker 2: it actually means. Now, we don't usually look at the
- 50:13Speaker 2: crucifixion by itself, unless it's Good Friday. Other than Good Friday,
- 50:18Speaker 2: we generally talk about the crucifixion in terms of the death, burial,
- 50:23Speaker 2: and resurrection of Jesus. We don't necessarily go into the
- 50:27Speaker 2: details of the crucifixion itself. But this is one of
- 50:30Speaker 2: the great benefits of preaching through books in the Bible,
- 50:34Speaker 2: verse by verse. There are those things that we normally
- 50:37Speaker 2: don't skip over, gloss over, pay attention to rarely, that
- 50:44Speaker 2: suddenly come into full focus. And they come into full
- 50:47Speaker 2: focus in a different context. And sometimes that can be striking.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Have you ever met a person somewhere and you know
- 51:00Speaker 2: that you know the person, but you've seen them in
- 51:04Speaker 2: another place and in another context, And now all of
- 51:06Speaker 2: a sudden in this place and in this context, you're
- 51:10Speaker 2: struck and it's hard for you to remember because this
- 51:14Speaker 2: place is different. Maybe somebody you see at work and
- 51:17Speaker 2: all of a sudden you see them at the store
- 51:19Speaker 2: and you're struck by that. Somebody that you've seen at
- 51:22Speaker 2: a conference and all of a sudden you see them
- 51:25Speaker 2: in another place and you're.
- 51:26Speaker 9: Struck by that.
- 51:28Speaker 2: The same can be true and ought to be true
- 51:30Speaker 2: when we talk about the crucifixion. The crucifixion is something
- 51:35Speaker 2: that we're used to seeing in a particular context.
- 51:41Speaker 9: Good Friday.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Good Friday is the day when we talk about the crucifixion,
- 51:45Speaker 2: when we think about the crucifixion. Not so today. Today
- 51:51Speaker 2: we look at it in a different context and try
- 51:54Speaker 2: to grasp the meaning of the crucifixion. Not the death, burial,
- 51:59Speaker 2: and resurrection, but the meaning of the crucifixion, the significance
- 52:04Speaker 2: the crucifixion and why it is how it is that
- 52:09Speaker 2: brings out that significance for us in his four things
- 52:15Speaker 2: that I want us to see the first is this
- 52:18Speaker 2: that the crucifixion roots our faith in history the crucifixion
- 52:23Speaker 2: roots our faith in history look at verses 16 through
- 52:28Speaker 2: 20 so they took Jesus and went out there he
- 52:31Speaker 2: went out bearing his own cross to the place called
- 52:34Speaker 2: the place of a skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.
- 52:39Speaker 2: There they crucified him, and with him two others, one
- 52:44Speaker 2: on either side, Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an
- 52:47Speaker 2: inscription and put it on the cross. It read, Jesus
- 52:51Speaker 2: of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. Many of the
- 52:54Speaker 2: Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was
- 52:57Speaker 2: crucified was near the city.
- 52:59Speaker 9: And it was written in Aramaic and Latin and in Hebrew. Greek.
- 53:04Speaker 2: Look at all the facts there. It's like a news story.
- 53:10Speaker 2: You get the who, what, where, why, when, how. You
- 53:13Speaker 2: get all of that and it's very succinct telling of
- 53:17Speaker 2: the story. In these few words, John packs loads of
- 53:23Speaker 2: factual information. For example, you get the place called the
- 53:26Speaker 2: place of a skull or Golgotha. You get that this
- 53:30Speaker 2: place is near the city but not in the city.
- 53:34Speaker 2: This is important for a number of reasons, that Jesus
- 53:38Speaker 2: was crucified near the city, but not in the city.
- 53:42Speaker 2: In fact, he's crucified just north of the city, the
- 53:48Speaker 2: old city of Jerusalem. There is an argument, there is
- 53:52Speaker 2: a dispute today between two locations. There is the one
- 53:56Speaker 2: traditional location, and when you go to Jerusalem, one of
- 53:59Speaker 2: the things that people want to do in Jerusalem is
- 54:02Speaker 2: Visit the site of the crucifixion. Visit the site of
- 54:07Speaker 2: the burial. And there are two competing sites. The one
- 54:11Speaker 2: site that most people go to is actually inside the
- 54:14Speaker 2: gates today. The traditional site, the Roman Catholic site, if
- 54:18Speaker 2: you will. And this is where most people will be
- 54:21Speaker 2: if you go. There's another site, however, outside of the gates,
- 54:27Speaker 2: even outside of the gates today. north of the fortress
- 54:31Speaker 2: of Antonia. The fortress of Antonia is on the north.
- 54:33Speaker 2: The Romans put that on the north of.
- 54:36Speaker 9: The old city. It's a fortification, easy to defend.
- 54:41Speaker 2: And then there is a road, a main road that
- 54:43Speaker 2: goes around the city. And it is argued that this
- 54:48Speaker 2: is actually the place where Jesus was crucified because it
- 54:52Speaker 2: is outside the city gates and he would have been
- 54:55Speaker 2: crucified outside the city gates. He would also have been
- 54:58Speaker 2: crucified outside along a busy thoroughfare, a busy road. Because
- 55:03Speaker 2: when the Romans crucified you, their intent was to terrify
- 55:08Speaker 2: all who saw it. Crucifixion was gruesome, and crucifixion was public. Well,
- 55:14Speaker 2: regardless of which one of these places, we know that
- 55:19Speaker 2: it's one or the other or somewhere in that vicinity,
- 55:24Speaker 2: and they're both very close to each other. But what
- 55:27Speaker 2: this tells us is, We know the place. We can
- 55:33Speaker 2: pinpoint the place because even the difference between this place
- 55:37Speaker 2: and that place, we're not talking about one city to another.
- 55:41Speaker 2: We're talking a walking distance from one place to another
- 55:45Speaker 2: and an argument about where the wall actually was. What
- 55:49Speaker 2: that tells us is that historically we have factual information.
- 55:56Speaker 2: We also know the event. The event was a crucifixion.
- 56:00Speaker 2: We know how Jesus died. Jesus didn't just disappear and
- 56:06Speaker 2: have his disciples one day come and tell a story
- 56:09Speaker 2: about how Jesus died.
- 56:12Speaker 9: Jesus' death was public. It was witnessed. It happened.
- 56:18Speaker 2: We know that it happened historically. And we know that
- 56:22Speaker 2: he died by way of crucifixion. We know the specific
- 56:27Speaker 2: details of the crucifixion when you look at the synoptic gospels.
- 56:32Speaker 2: We also get more particulars, like he was crucified between
- 56:36Speaker 2: two transgressors, one on either side of him. This is
- 56:40Speaker 2: a very specific detail. And you only have specific details
- 56:46Speaker 2: like this when you have specific historic events.
- 56:51Speaker 9: Another thing about this that is very important is that
- 56:55Speaker 9: it makes.
- 56:56Speaker 2: the claims about the crucifixion of Jesus falsifiable. It makes
- 57:02Speaker 2: them falsifiable. Now, it sounds like a bad thing. It's
- 57:05Speaker 2: not a bad thing. Any of you who are scientists
- 57:09Speaker 2: or any of you who have taken any advanced science
- 57:13Speaker 2: where you had to do experiments, remember, in order for
- 57:17Speaker 2: a scientific experiment to be legitimate, your findings have to
- 57:22Speaker 2: be falsifiable. Anyway, in other words, you have to be
- 57:25Speaker 2: able to demonstrate that it's not true. If there's no
- 57:29Speaker 2: way that you can falsify it, then you can't really
- 57:31Speaker 2: make the claim that you've proven anything. The claims about
- 57:36Speaker 2: the crucifixion of Jesus are falsifiable. In other words, people
- 57:40Speaker 2: during this time could have said, no, that did not happen.
- 57:46Speaker 2: And here's the proof that it did not happen. The
- 57:50Speaker 2: fact that we have a historical event that is falsifiable
- 57:54Speaker 2: actually makes it more valid, not less valid. It roots
- 58:00Speaker 2: our faith in history. We have the officials. Pilate was there.
- 58:06Speaker 2: Pilate was the Roman official who was in charge. We
- 58:10Speaker 2: also have the inscription. The inscription is written. We know
- 58:14Speaker 2: what the text is. We know it's written in Aramaic,
- 58:18Speaker 2: in Greek. And in Latin, again, making this a public
- 58:25Speaker 2: event that was witnessed by thousands of people. Not just
- 58:30Speaker 2: a few, not just dozens, not just hundreds, but thousands
- 58:34Speaker 2: of people would have witnessed the crucifixion of the Lord
- 58:39Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. This roots our faith in history. Oftentimes, we
- 58:47Speaker 2: have this false dilemma, right? that either we have to
- 58:51Speaker 2: have faith or we have to have facts. Nothing could
- 58:56Speaker 2: be further from the truth. That is a false dilemma.
- 58:59Speaker 2: It is a false dichotomy. We trust God and we
- 59:02Speaker 2: have faith, but God has given us evidence to base
- 59:08Speaker 2: our faith upon. And here he's given us specific and
- 59:13Speaker 2: copious historical evidence to base our faith upon. You can
- 59:19Speaker 2: read writings outside of the Bible that will tell you
- 59:23Speaker 2: that the crucifixion actually happened. So this roots our faith
- 59:28Speaker 2: in history. However, because it's rooted in history, there are
- 59:34Speaker 2: also those who will try to falsify. You've probably had
- 59:40Speaker 2: conversations with some of them, and they try to take
- 59:43Speaker 2: the four Gospels and play them against each other and say,
- 59:46Speaker 2: we've got contradictory evidence. This passage is one of the
- 59:50Speaker 2: places that people will go to in order to show
- 59:53Speaker 2: contradictions in the Bible. Please allow me to show you
- 59:57Speaker 2: the contradictions that they're trying to demonstrate in the Bible
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: to undermine the historicity of our faith. John says, Pilate
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: You got that? Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Matthew 27, 37. And over his head, they put the
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: charge against him, which read, This is Jesus, the king
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: of the Jews.
- 1:00:29Speaker 14: Ha!
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Contradiction in the Bible. John says, Jesus of Nazareth, the
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: king of the Jews. Matthew says, this is Jesus, not
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: of Nazareth, king of the Jews.
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: Wait, there's more.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Mark, chapter 15, verse 26 says, And the inscription of
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: the charge against him read, the king of the Jews.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: If you know anything about Mark's gospel, you know he's
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: the shortest gospel. You know Mark's favorite word is immediately
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: or straight away. If there was a theme to Mark's gospel,
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: it would be just.
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: The facts, ma'am.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Everything short and succinct. So it makes sense that Mark
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: would have the shortest version of this. And then Luke,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Luke 23, 38. There was also an inscription over him,
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: this is the king of the Jews. So with Mark,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: you don't have this is Jesus of Nazareth. He has
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: the king of the Jews. With Luke, you have this is,
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: and you don't have Jesus of Nazareth, but you do
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: have king of the Jews. With Matthew, you have this
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: is Jesus, not of Nazareth, king of the Jews. And
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: with John, you have Jesus of Nazareth, you don't have.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: This is the kind of stuff that people stoop to
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: in order to say.
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: See? Contradiction in the Bible. Newsflash.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: These are all the same. This is Jesus of Nazareth,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: the King of the Jews. Somebody asks you, what was written?
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: This is the king of the Jews. Is that what
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: was written? Yes.
- 1:02:30Speaker 9: Is that all that was written? No.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: But for whatever reason, the person that you're talking to,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: you feel like that's the information that they need. Someone says,
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: this is Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews. Somebody says,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: what was written? And you say, this is Jesus, king
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: of the Jews. Ah, you didn't say of Nazareth.
- 1:02:51Speaker 9: Do you follow? Do you see what's happening here? the
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: information is the same.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: It's almost like, you know, there's a car crash, and
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: you talk to four different people about the car crash,
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: and four people saw the car crash from four different angles,
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: and the four people tell you a slightly different story
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: about the car crash. Now, your conclusion could either be
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: these are four different people who saw the same thing
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: and are communicating it from their perspective, Or you could
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: say there was no car crash. Because they're all not
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: saying the exact same thing in the exact same way. Therefore,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: it didn't happen. That is absolutely ridiculous. The same is
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: true here. It's the same information. It's the same historic
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: information communicated by Ford. different authors. By the way, it
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: was also written in three different languages. So the way
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: that you communicate what was there would probably also change
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: a bit based on which language group you're communicating to.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: But this roots us in history. Our faith is rooted
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: in history. We get a picture of this from the
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: prologue of Luke where Luke, the historian and the physician, Says,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: you know, in as much as many have undertaken to
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: compile an account of the things accomplished among us, right?
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Just as many eyewitnesses have communicated these things to us.
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: He says, it.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Seemed fitting to me, having followed these things from the beginning,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: to write out an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: To write out an orderly account for you.
- 1:04:47Speaker 12: Why?
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: Luke is concerned with order. Luke is concerned with the
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: historicity of events. What's John's main concern? Seven signs that
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Jesus is the Messiah and giving you those seven signs
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: That's what's important to him. It's not as important to
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: John that the events go in the exact chronological order.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: He's trying to give you seven signs and the impact
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: of of these seven signs. So yes, historical event actually happened.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: We can root and ground our faith in these historical
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: events in spite of the fact that those who communicate
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: these historical events to us communicate them from different perspectives.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: Amen?
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Secondly, crucifixion takes away our guilt. And it takes away
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: our guilt because it places that guilt Jesus again these
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: same verses but listen to them again from a different
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: perspective the first time we're looking for historical facts this
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: time so they took Jesus and he went out bearing
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: his own cross he went out bearing his own cross
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: he went out where outside the city gates to the
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: place where criminals and slaves are crucified. He suffered the indignity,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: not only of his scourging, but of carrying his own
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: cross as far as he could until he needed help.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: The place of the skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: there they crucified him. They didn't just kill him, they
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: crucified him. He died the death that thieves and murderers
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: and slaves would die. He died a shameful death. With him,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: two others, one on either side, Jesus between them, crucified
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: between common thieves as though he were a common thief.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Death by crucifixion was in itself regarded as a curse
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Galatians 3 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: the law by becoming a curse for us for it
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: is written cursed is everyone who is hanged on a
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: tree he's crucified he's crucified on wood from a tree.
- 1:07:41Speaker 9: Which for a Jew means that he is a curse.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: We get this from Deuteronomy 21 verses 22 and 23
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: and he is put to death, and you hang him
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: on a tree, his body shall not remain all night
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day,
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: not defile your land that the Lord your God is
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: giving you for an inheritance.
- 1:08:14Speaker 9: He is a curse. And his very presence.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: hanging on the tree is defilement of the land. 1
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Corinthians 1, 22 to 23. This is why Paul says,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: for Jews demand signs, Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: Why is preaching a crucified Christ a stumbling block to Jews?
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Because a man who is crucified is cursed by God
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: And it's a stumbling block to Jews because how can
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: the Messiah be cursed by God? How can you be
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: cursed by God and be the Messiah? It's folly to Greeks.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Why is it folly to Greeks? Because for Greeks, when
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: they think about their gods, they think about powerful gods
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: who can destroy.
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: Anything in their path.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: And no powerful god would allow himself to die, much
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: less die the death of a criminal slave like crucifixion.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Christ bore our shame. Christ bore our humiliation on the cross.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: He took it away. 2 Corinthians 5, 4. For while
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: we are still in this tent, we groan. being burdened,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: not that we would be unclothed, but that we would
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: be further clothed so that what is mortal may be
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: swallowed up by life. He's humiliated even in his nakedness.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: We'll get to that. Beloved, if you're carrying guilt today,
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: then the wrong person is carrying your cross. Because if
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: you have placed your faith in the lord jesus christ
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: your guilt has been nailed to the tree and has
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: been taken away if you are trusting in christ for
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: salvation answer me this why are you continuing to hold
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: the guilt that he took do you think that you
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: can do better with it than he did Or do
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: you think that what he did with it was so
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: insufficient that you somehow have to carry it as well?
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: Your guilt is gone. You carry it no more. Thirdly,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: the crucifixion was a fulfillment of prophecy. Many prophecies. In
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: these last days, in these last moments, in these last
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: events of Jesus' life, He fulfilled some 300 prophecies. But
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: let's look at a couple of them here. Look at
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: verse 23, 23 and 24. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: they took his garments and divided them into four parts,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: one part for each soldier, also his tunic. But the
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: This would have been the lowermost garment. So they said
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: to one another, let us not tear it, but cast
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: lots for it to see whose it shall be. This
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: was to fulfill the scripture which says, they divided my
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: So the soldiers did these things. Look with me, if
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: you will, at Psalm 22. Turn to Psalm 22. Psalm
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: 22 is written over a thousand years before Jesus was crucified.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: I was looking at Proverbs.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: 22, wondering why I wasn't seeing what I was looking for.
- 1:13:09Speaker 9: Psalm....
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Psalm 22. Beginning at verse 1. My God, my God,
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: why have you forsaken me? By the way, does that
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: sound familiar? Jesus cries out this when he's on the cross.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: By the way, remember this. Think about this.
- 1:13:30Speaker 9: Psalm 22... A psalm is a song.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: So the psalms are the songbook of God's people. The
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: psalms are the songbook of God's people. They had psalms
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: for different occasions, right? Psalms of ascent for when you're
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: going up to Jerusalem. They had psalms for different occasions.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: So they would have been familiar with Psalm 22. So
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: here you are, Jesus is being crucified. The Lord of
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: mercy hanging on a tree. And he calls out the
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: first line, which would have been the title of a song. Now,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: if you are passing by and you see something that
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: strikes you, you see a man dying. You pass by
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: a man dying. And as the man is dying, he says,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: pass me not, O gentle Savior. What immediately comes to
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: your mind?
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Anybody.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: The next line. The next line. Or if he says,
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: amazing grace, how sweet the sound. What immediately comes to
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: your mind? You pass by this gruesome scene. The man
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: is dying on the ground. And he says, amazing grace,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: how sweet the sound. you immediately think of the rest
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: of the psalm.
- 1:15:03Speaker 9: Amen?
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: So here's Jesus hanging on a cross, and he calls
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: out the first line of Psalm 22, and you know
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: Psalm 22. So what immediately does every Jewish person who's
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: worshiped in the temple think of? After Jesus says, my God,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: my God, why have you forsaken me? They think of
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: the rest of the psalm. Why are you so far
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: from saving me from the words.
- 1:15:36Speaker 9: Of my groaning?
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Oh my God, I cry by day, but you do
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: not answer. And by night I find no rest. Yet
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: you our fathers trusted. They trusted and you delivered them.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: To you they cried and were rescued. In you they
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: trusted and were not put to shame. But I am
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: despised by the people. All who see me mock me.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: They make mouths at me. They wag their heads. He
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: trusts in the Lord. Let him deliver him. Let him
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: rescue him, for he delights in him. This is exactly
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: what's happening at the crucifixion of Jesus. Verse 12. Many
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: bulls encompass me. Strong bulls of Bashan surround me. They
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: open wide their mouths at me like ravening and roaring lion.
- 1:16:29Speaker 9: I'm poured out like water. All my bones are out
- 1:16:32Speaker 9: of joint.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Why? Because you're nailed to a cross. My heart is
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: like wax. It is melted within me. Pierce him in
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: the side. Puncture the pericardium. Blood and water rush out.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: My strength is dried up like potsherd, and my tongue
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: sticks to my jaws, which would make you say, I thirst.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: You lay me in the dust of death, for dogs
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: encompass me.
- 1:16:54Speaker 9: That's Gentiles.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: A company of evildoers encircles me, one on the right,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: one on the left. They have pierced my hands and feet.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: What's interesting about this is most people who are crucified,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: I can't say most, but a large number of people
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: who are crucified weren't nailed to a cross. They were
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: tied to it and suffocated, sometimes over a course of days.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: But Jesus was pierced in his hands and his feet.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: He was nailed to the cross. I can count all
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: my bones. This is very important because we're going to
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: learn later that they didn't break his legs in order
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: to hasten his death. Why would they have broken his
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: legs in order to hasten his death? Because cursed is
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: anyone who hangs on the tree, and he also curses
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: the land because he's hanging on the tree. If you're
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: being hanged right before a high holy day, they can't
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: have your body on the cross during a high holy day.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: So they break your legs so that your death becomes
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: instant and they can take you down and you're not
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: hanging on a tree cursing the land during a high
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: holy day which was coming up the day after Jesus
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: was crucified. But because he gave up the ghost they
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: didn't have to break his legs. I can count all
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: my bones. They stare and gloat over me. They divide
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: my garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: A thousand years before Jesus was born. A thousand years
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: before he was born.
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: We have this written.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: And his public crucifixion in the face of thousands fulfills
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: this very prophecy. not only that but in Isaiah 53
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: we won't take the time to go to that one
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: as well but Isaiah 53 that was written some 750
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: years before Jesus was born.
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: Again over and over again.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: God tells us what He's going to do to redeem
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: His people and then He does exactly that through the
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. So the
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: crucifixion is fulfillment of prophecy. Finally, the crucifixion is a
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: demonstration of God's love. It It doesn't even sound right
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: to say that. That something so horrific, that something so
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: ugly could in any way be associated with love. But
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: it's a demonstration of God's love in two ways. First
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: of all, Christ died for sin. Once for all, the
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: just for the unjust. in order that he might bring
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: us to God.
- 1:20:11Speaker 9: Amen?
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: God so loved the world that he gave his only
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: begotten son so that whoever believes in him will not
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: perish but have everlasting life. God made him who knew
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: no sin to be sin for us so that we
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: might become the righteousness of God in him. So God is, God,
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: God demonstrates his love for us in this, in that
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. So
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: the crucifixion demonstrates God's love in the broadest sense in
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: that it is a substitutionary atoning death on the behalf
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: of sinners who cannot pay for their own sin. Paul
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: says it clearly, most clearly.
- 1:20:51Speaker 9: There in Romans.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: God demonstrates for us in this, and that while we
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
- 1:21:01Speaker 9: Jesus demonstrates it clearly.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: Greater love has no man than this, than he laid
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: down his life for his friends. But beloved, that's not
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: the love that I'm talking about here.
- 1:21:13Speaker 9: It is.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: We do see that love in the crucifixion. But we
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: see another love. Look at verse 25. But standing by
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister,
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby,
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son. Then
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: he said to the disciple, Behold your mother. And from
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: Jesus is hanging on the cross, dying the most gruesome
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: death imaginable.
- 1:22:01Speaker 9: And he takes this moment not only to make arrangements.
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: For his mother, He could have pulled John aside at
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: any moment before this and said, listen, when I'm gone,
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: take care of my mother. And it would have been enough.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: A son taking care of his mother. But it wasn't
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: just that. On the cross, he looks to her and
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: he does not say, mother, this is your son. No,
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: he says, woman, behold your son. By the way, ordinarily
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: quite disrespectful for a son.
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: Amen?
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: I don't know about you, but if at my house,
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: one of my children decided today to say to my wife, woman,
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: I wouldn't even be able to tell you what came after.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: And he might not make it to church next week.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: And yet, Jesus says, not mother, but woman. Listen to
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: this from Kistemacher. Here at the cross, exactly as at
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Cana's wedding, it was very kind of Jesus to emphasize
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: by the use of the word woman that Mary must
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: no longer think of him as being merely her son.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: For the more she conceives of him as her son,
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: the more also will she suffer when he suffers. Mary
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: must begin to look upon Jesus as her Lord. Yes,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: even then she will suffer, but this suffering will be
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: of a different nature. She will then know that though
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: indescribably terrible, his agony is nevertheless glorious because of its purpose.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: She will then begin to to concentrate on its redemptive meaning. Hence,
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: not mother, but woman. Mary's merely emotional suffering, as any
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: mother would suffer for her son in crucified, must be
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: replaced by something higher and nobler. That is adoration. At
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: this moment, Jesus is not a son taking care of
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: his mother. Not merely that. He's a savior who's redeeming her.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: And he is reminding her that he is her redeemer.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: And that's more significant than him seeing to it paid
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: for and is redeemed and will be with him in
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: glory as part of the bride of Christ.
- 1:25:13Speaker 9: So not mother. Woman.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: In this, we see the love of God displayed through
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: the gruesome nature of the cross. What's interesting about this
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: is when we think about the cross and when we
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: think about the crucifixion, our minds usually go to how
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: terrible it was. Our minds usually go to how much
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Jesus must have suffered. But at least to this point.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: And for the most part, in John, he's not dwelling
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: on that. Did Jesus suffer? Yes, he suffered. He suffered.
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: But the cross is not significant for us merely because
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: of suffering. Again, two other men suffered along with him
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: that day. Thousands upon thousands of men were crucified as
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: he was crucified. So no, it's not just the suffering
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: and the brutality. It is the fact that this suffering
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: is substitutionary suffering. That this suffering is suffering under the
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: wrath of God on behalf of sinners who cannot bear
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: this suffering themselves. This suffering is suffering that was totally
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: undeserved because Christ had never committed sin. This suffering was
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: suffering on behalf of others. This suffering was so that
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: God could be just in pouring out His wrath on
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: sin and the justifier of the one who places faith
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: in Jesus Christ. The one who believes in that suffering
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: as His own. The one who believes in that suffering
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: as payment for the penalty that He owes to God
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: because He's a sinner in need of a Savior. That's
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: the significance of the crucifixion. It roots our faith In history,
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: this really happened. It takes away our guilt and places
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: it on Jesus. And how amazing is it that part
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: of this, and John doesn't dwell on it, but why
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: are you able to cast lots for a man's clothes?
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: Because you've stripped him naked. And there he hangs, naked
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: and humiliated, bearing our guilt. Isn't it interesting that the
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: first response of our forefather Adam, after he ate of
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: the tree of the forbidden fruit, was to clothe himself
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: to cover the shame of his nakedness. Ham is judged
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: by God for uncovering the nakedness of Noah. And here
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: on the cross Christ bears our guilt and our shame naked.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: He does so as he fulfills prophecy and says to
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: all with an ear to hear, this is exactly what
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: God said he would do. And he does so as
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: a demonstration of the love of God. This is why
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: The crucifixion of Jesus has meaning. Beyond the suffering, beyond
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: the pain, because of the significance behind it all.
- 1:29:51Speaker 9: Let's pray.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: Our gracious God and our Heavenly Father.
- 1:30:09Speaker 9: The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The
- 1:30:16Speaker 9: God who.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Loved us and loves us and demonstrates His love for
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: us through the person and work of Christ and His
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: death on the cross. To you, our great God, we
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: come and before you we bow in humble adoration. Overwhelmed
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: by the magnitude of the love that you demonstrated by
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: pouring out your wrath on your only begotten son. Overwhelmed
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: by the magnitude of the significance of that love. In
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: redeeming us.
- 1:31:06Speaker 9: From sin. And overwhelmed.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: By the beauty that you bring from these ashes. So
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: that something so gruesome could be cause for celebration. Grant
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: by your grace that we might glory in the cross.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Because of the one who died thereon. Because of the
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: price that he paid. Because of the redemption that he purchased.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Grant this we pray. For we ask it in Christ's name.
- 1:31:55Speaker 9: And for his sake.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:32:14Speaker 9: Amen.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: What a humbling reminder of unending grace, amazing love.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: In response to the preaching.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: Of God's word, I ask that you join me in
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: standing as we respond by singing, amazing grace, how sweet
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: the sound that saved A wretch like me. I once
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: was lost, but now I am found. Was blind, but
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: now I see. And after we've sung this hymn, I'll
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: kindly ask Elder Kevin Kaunda to come and close in
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: a word of prayer. Please join me in standing and
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: I'll ask the choir to lead.
- 1:33:27Speaker 15: Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch
- 1:33:38Speaker 15: like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found.
- 1:33:49Speaker 15: Was blind, but now I see. Was grace that taught
- 1:34:00Speaker 15: my heart to fear, and.
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: Grace my fears relieved.
- 1:34:11Speaker 15: How precious did that grace.
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: Appear, the hour I first believed.
- 1:34:25Speaker 16: My chains are gone, I've been set free. My God,
- 1:34:34Speaker 16: my Savior, has ransomed me, and I will fly.
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: His mercy reigns.
- 1:34:48Speaker 7: Unending love, amazing grace.
- 1:34:56Speaker 6: The Lord has.
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Promised good to me.
- 1:35:04Speaker 7: His word my hope secures.
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: He willed my sheep and horses.
- 1:35:19Speaker 7: As long as life is good, my chains are good.
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: I've been set free.
- 1:35:33Speaker 7: My God, my Savior, has brought so me.
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: And like a flower, He's blessed me with unending love,
- 1:35:50Speaker 6: amazing grace.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: The earth shall.
- 1:35:59Speaker 10: Soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine.
- 1:36:12Speaker 7: But God who called me here below will be forever mine.
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: You are forever.
- 1:36:31Speaker 7: My chains are gone.
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: My chains are gone. I've been set free. My God,
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flower His
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: mercy reigns. Unending love. Amazing grace.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: Please remain standing. Shall we pray?
- 1:37:24Speaker 14: Our great God and Father who is in heaven, we
- 1:37:29Speaker 14: are amazed, O Lord, at how you seem to hide yourself,
- 1:37:36Speaker 14: to hide your voice in the faithful preaching and exposition
- 1:37:43Speaker 14: of your word. We want to thank you, O Lord,
- 1:37:47Speaker 14: for the way the whole act of crucifixion has come
- 1:37:52Speaker 14: to us in this sermon, in the message just delivered
- 1:37:58Speaker 14: to us, with a sense of power and yet with
- 1:38:01Speaker 14: a sense of freshness, O God. Just amazed, O Father,
- 1:38:06Speaker 14: at how many prophecies were fulfilled, O Lord, in the
- 1:38:11Speaker 14: act of the crucifixion of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:38:17Speaker 14: We are also amazed, oh God, at the fact that
- 1:38:20Speaker 14: it was through that horrendous, horrific death, O Lord, that
- 1:38:25Speaker 14: crucifixion on the cross, that our case was born, O Lord,
- 1:38:31Speaker 14: in the act of crucifixion, and that in him, O Lord,
- 1:38:35Speaker 14: we can stand accepted before God, that in him we
- 1:38:40Speaker 14: can stand reconciled to the Father.
- 1:38:44Speaker 9: And so, Father, we.
- 1:38:45Speaker 14: are indeed humbled at how you have brought your word
- 1:38:50Speaker 14: so powerfully and yet so simply to us this morning.
- 1:38:55Speaker 14: And we want to thank you, O Lord, for the
- 1:38:58Speaker 14: joy of this salvation that has been delivered once and
- 1:39:02Speaker 14: for all through our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. And
- 1:39:06Speaker 14: the fact that we can stand here in awe, O God,
- 1:39:11Speaker 14: that we can stand here in adoration, O God. We
- 1:39:15Speaker 14: can stand here, O God, just amazed, O God, at
- 1:39:19Speaker 14: the vastness, the greatness of this salvation that has been
- 1:39:23Speaker 14: procured for us in your beloved Son. And we continue
- 1:39:27Speaker 14: to pray, pleading, O God, that you'll give us a
- 1:39:30Speaker 14: sense of gratitude for as long as you lend us breath,
- 1:39:35Speaker 14: O Lord, at just how priceless, at how just indescribable
- 1:39:41Speaker 14: this salvation is to us. Indeed, Father, we want to
- 1:39:45Speaker 14: thank you for those in our midst, O God, who
- 1:39:48Speaker 14: might be strangers to this salvation, that, O God, you
- 1:39:52Speaker 14: might be gracious that through this message so faithfully preached
- 1:39:56Speaker 14: this morning will bring about, O God, a reflection, O Lord,
- 1:40:01Speaker 14: about the state of their hearts, the state of their souls, indeed,
- 1:40:05Speaker 14: the state of their standing before you, O God, before
- 1:40:10Speaker 14: your most holy majesty, O Lord. And we want to ask,
- 1:40:14Speaker 14: O Father, that may you be gracious to speak to
- 1:40:17Speaker 14: any such person, that, O Lord, may it be like
- 1:40:20Speaker 14: the voice that raises the dead, O Lord, bringing them
- 1:40:24Speaker 14: from death to life, O God, to also share in
- 1:40:28Speaker 14: the forgiveness of sin that we have come to know,
- 1:40:31Speaker 14: to share, O Lord, in the reconciliation that we have
- 1:40:35Speaker 14: in Christ Jesus, O God, and to know, O Lord,
- 1:40:38Speaker 14: the joy of what it is to be called children
- 1:40:42Speaker 14: of the living God. And so, Father, we want to
- 1:40:45Speaker 14: pray that may you bless this, your way to our hearts,
- 1:40:48Speaker 14: and may you grant, dear Lord, that we so meditate
- 1:40:51Speaker 14: upon it and find it a joy and delight, O God,
- 1:40:55Speaker 14: to exalt and to rejoice, O Lord, in the greatness,
- 1:40:59Speaker 14: in the vastness, just, O Lord, in the power of this,
- 1:41:04Speaker 14: your salvation. And now, Father, as we come to the
- 1:41:07Speaker 14: end of our time together this morning, we want to
- 1:41:10Speaker 14: thank you for all that has preceded the preaching of
- 1:41:13Speaker 14: your word. We want to thank you for the singing
- 1:41:16Speaker 14: of songs that you enabled us to do before your presence.
- 1:41:20Speaker 14: We want to thank you for the prayers that ascended
- 1:41:23Speaker 14: your throne of grace. And we want to now ask
- 1:41:26Speaker 14: that you might be pleased, dear Lord, to dismiss us
- 1:41:29Speaker 14: with the blessings of your peace, that you might be
- 1:41:32Speaker 14: gracious upon each one of us to indeed commute safely
- 1:41:35Speaker 14: back to our respective homes. But much more, dear Lord,
- 1:41:39Speaker 14: that you may give us your blessing for the week
- 1:41:42Speaker 14: as we get started in a brand new week. We pray,
- 1:41:45Speaker 14: dear Lord, that you'll be gracious to hear us and
- 1:41:48Speaker 14: to do for us these things because we ask it
- 1:41:51Speaker 14: in Jesus' name.
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: Please be seated. Thank you so much, Elder Kevin. We
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: have come to the end of our family service this
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: morning here at Hillview Baptist Church. One or two things
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: before the ushers lead us out. Visitors, we are so
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: delighted to have you. And if we have any, I'll
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: ask that by show.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: Of hand, you don't need to stand.
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: You just need to raise your hand.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: Please do.
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: So we can take notice of your presence with us. Visitors,
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: please by show of hands. Yes, just keep that hand.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: I can see another visitor there.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: There's one here. Okay, so the ashes await upon you.
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: So they're giving you some kind of brochure. So we'll
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: tear off a certain portion that you'll go with. But
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: the other portion has to be completely and correctly filled
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: in by you. And please, especially for the phone number,
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: please ensure that it is properly filled in. Okay, so
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: by special way, let's welcome our visitors. And just one
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: more thing to our visitors, as the ushers lead us out,
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: please remain in your seats as some people will come
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: through to attend to you and get to know you more.
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: We have our information desk. As you're walking out, it's
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: right there. So if you have any information, any clarifications,
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: you want to ask about something pertaining to church, please
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: feel free to walk through and all other details regarding
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: Hillview Baptist Church will be available to you. The ushers
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: will wait upon us as we give our offerings and
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: tithes as we walk out please remember to drop in
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: your offerings and tithes. I think that is all. This
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: coming weekend, we have our VBS orientation. So those that
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: are supposed to be taking part in that workshop stroke orientation,
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: please remember to place that appointment in your calendars. The
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: meeting place is.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: Here at church.
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: Thank you very much. I'll just close with a benediction
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: before we sing our exit hymn. And this is from
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: Ephesians 3, verse 20 and 21.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: Ephesians 3, 20 and 21. Now to him who is.
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: Able to do far more abundantly than all that we
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: ask or think. according to the power at work within us.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: To him be glory in the church and in Christ
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever.
- 1:45:07Speaker 6: Amen.
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: Thank you so much for coming today. As we leave
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: this place, we'll be singing the song of the month
- 1:45:17Speaker 3: for August. We have come to the end of July.
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: And as you may know, our song of the month
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: for July has been Behold Our God. And for the
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: month of August, our song of the month is titled,
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: I Will Offer Up My Life. In spirit and truth,
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: pouring out the oil of love as my worship to you.
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: In surrender, I must give. My every part, Lord, receive
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: the sacrifice.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: Of a broken heart.
- 1:45:53Speaker 7: Amen.
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: I ask the choir to lead us in this song.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: And the ashes will wait upon us as this song
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: is being sung.
- 1:46:03Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: God bless you. Have a fruitful and blessed week.
