- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's a Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 6th of November, and I am grateful that you have
- 0:20invited me into your day because today we are going to open up
- 0:24this wonderful, well, the first of two epistles to the church in
- 0:29Thessalonica. And this is a letter written not
- 0:32just by Paul, but by a trio, Paul, Silas and Timothy.
- 0:36They've got the band back together.
- 0:37Well, not back together. In fact this is actually one of
- 0:40the earliest letters that we have that Paul wrote early along
- 0:44in his ministry and this is one that he wrote to this relatively
- 0:48new church in this port side town of Thessalonica which which
- 0:54was really quite an important city back through the Greek
- 0:56days. And so when the Romans took over
- 0:59about 150 years before Jesus ministry, they kind of left it
- 1:03to its own devices to run itself because it was a very productive
- 1:06and profitable centre. So there are all the Greek gods,
- 1:10plus they added all the Roman gods there.
- 1:12And it is a place full of idol worship.
- 1:16And this new church is struggling to work out how do we
- 1:19be Christians in this place, Particularly because all of
- 1:22their neighbours and friends were just giving them a hard
- 1:26time. Just wondering what on earth was
- 1:29wrong with them following this new way and trying to convince
- 1:31them to come back to a respectable established
- 1:35religion. And so Paul, Silas and Timothy
- 1:38are going to talk about the benefits of believing in Jesus
- 1:42and how honourable that actually is in this difficult place where
- 1:47they live, trying to change their lives and maintain a
- 1:51Christian way of being, even with all the pressure from
- 1:53around them. Which I got to say, doesn't
- 1:56sound too unlike our world. So let us settle ourselves in
- 2:00and hear the wonderful advice, even though this is a very brief
- 2:03opening chapter from our friends as we read together First
- 2:08Thessalonians chapter 1. This letter is from Paul, Silas
- 2:24and Timothy. We are writing to the church in
- 2:27Thessalonica to you who belong to God the Father and the Lord
- 2:32Jesus Christ. May God give you grace and
- 2:36peace. We always thank God for all of
- 2:40you and pray for you constantly. As we pray for our God and
- 2:44Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving
- 2:48deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of the Lord Jesus
- 2:53Christ. We know, dear brothers and
- 2:56sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own
- 3:01people. For when we brought you the good
- 3:04news, it was not only with words but also with power.
- 3:08For the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said
- 3:12was true. And you know of our concern for
- 3:15you from the way we lived when we were with you.
- 3:20So you received this message with joy from the Holy Spirit,
- 3:23in spite of the severe suffering it brought you.
- 3:27In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord.
- 3:32As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in
- 3:36Greece, throughout both Macedonia and Ikaya.
- 3:42And now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people
- 3:46everywhere, even beyond Macedonia and Ikaya.
- 3:50For wherever we go, we find people telling us about your
- 3:54faith in God. We don't need to tell them about
- 3:57it, for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave
- 4:01us and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and
- 4:05true God. And they speak of how you are
- 4:09looking forward to the coming of God's Son from heaven, Jesus,
- 4:14whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us
- 4:19from the terrors of the coming judgement.
- 4:31Jesus, let us be like this church in Thessalonica.
- 4:36Let people speak about us to say that we have shown them great
- 4:42welcome and love and kindness. Our Lord, I pray that you would
- 4:46continue your work of transformation in us so that we
- 4:50can become generous and kind and patience and upstanding people,
- 4:57people who live according to the way that you would have us live
- 5:00and people who would show the fruits of the Spirit.
- 5:04And may the way that we live inspired by you make a
- 5:07difference in our world so that people do stop and say, my
- 5:11goodness, these people, what's with them?
- 5:14And we can point to you, our incredible loving God and the
- 5:17author of all good things are you alone are worthy of our
- 5:22praise. Help us turn from the idols of
- 5:26our world and worship you. And we pray all of this in your
- 5:31saving name, Jesus, Amen.
