Transcript
- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, TikTok creator Jezebel has made
- 0:04the Internet mad after quitting her job as an attorney.
- 0:08The $1.2 million launch going viral and why TikTok users are
- 0:12coming for an Ariana Grande concert attendee.
- 0:16Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:19daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:22from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:25Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays, I'm your
- 0:28host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian youth digital
- 0:32media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll
- 0:36everyone, and welcome back to the Bob.
- 0:39OK, if you guys are watching, then you'll notice I have
- 0:42chopped my hair. We are no longer doing like the
- 0:46wispy surfer girl vibes. We are back to the blunt bleach
- 0:51blonde Bob and I'm feeling very good about it.
- 0:53I literally just got it done like two hours ago.
- 0:55So she does have like the very freshly colored, freshly washed
- 1:00puffy vibes. But regardless, I'm back.
- 1:04OK, before I get into it, we have a listener on Spotify who
- 1:06keeps commenting and asking for a shout out.
- 1:09So of course I'll give you a shout out.
- 1:10So shout out to Evie, Pokémon, Pokémon Pokémon.
- 1:14We see your comments every day. Thank you for the love and the
- 1:18support, and we're so glad that you love the pod.
- 1:20All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 1:23So the first story that I have for you guys today, this also
- 1:27came from a Spotify comment. We're going to cover how Tik
- 1:29Toker Jezebel is going viral for quitting her job.
- 1:32So Jezebel is a popular content creator.
- 1:34She's known for posting videos about her life, mostly about
- 1:37dating. And aside from TikTok, she's
- 1:39also been open with her audience over the years about how she
- 1:42works as an attorney full time. So we did remember Jezebel once,
- 1:45I want to say like last year, maybe she was in a feud with
- 1:49like another dating content creator.
- 1:52So if you guys want more information on her and that
- 1:55entire situation, just like type it into the search bar Jezebel
- 1:59and you will find it cuz we've only spoken about her once.
- 2:01Five days ago, she took to TikTok to announce that she
- 2:03would be quitting her job. In the video, she explained the
- 2:06situation, saying she's been working at her law firm for nine
- 2:09years, starting as an intern, and she said that she always
- 2:13loved her job until recently. So Jezebel maintained that it's
- 2:16not a scheduling issue that made her quit.
- 2:19With her TikTok fame, she had secured management, but she had
- 2:22always made it clear that she would not be quitting her job
- 2:25for content creation. However, things became difficult
- 2:28for her because her employer started receiving anonymous
- 2:31complaints about her via e-mail, presumably from haters or
- 2:35Internet trolls. Told her that I was never going
- 2:38to quit my job. I meant that God I don't want to
- 2:40cry during this but I do get emotional talking about it.
- 2:43I told her I wasn't going to quit my job, I meant that.
- 2:45Unfortunately, what happens with success on the Internet?
- 2:49People wanting to bring you down.
- 2:51And about 2 1/2 months ago, these unknown, unnamed,
- 2:56undisclosed losers on the Internet took it upon themselves
- 3:00to find where I work and e-mail my employer incessantly until my
- 3:05employer had to get me involved. I'm an attorney and I work for
- 3:10attorneys. So I thought, all of us have a
- 3:12brain here. We're actually not going to let
- 3:14user 45321 no name, no profile photo from the dark corners of
- 3:19the web drive the ship. Well, color me surprised when
- 3:23that's not how it played out. For the last two months I have
- 3:26had meeting after meeting, conversation after conversation,
- 3:31e-mail after e-mail, phone call after phone call with my office
- 3:37as they tried to get me to explain anonymous,
- 3:40unsubstantiated, unknown complaints from random people on
- 3:45the Internet. Her boss eventually had to bring
- 3:47it to her, which has made things difficult for her in the
- 3:49workplace since they're now conducting an investigation.
- 3:52She said that her office had become increasingly hostile,
- 3:54where some employees had been tasked with watching all of her
- 3:57posts and lives to keep track of her content.
- 4:00And so anyways, this obviously has manifested into anxiety for
- 4:03her, which she does discuss more in depth in the video.
- 4:06And then she added that she will not be looking for a new job at
- 4:09least for three months. It wasn't that these losers on
- 4:12the Internet were going out of their way to try to bring me
- 4:15down, because I've experienced that and placed on the Internet.
- 4:17I know that comes with the territory.
- 4:19It was the fact that this group of fucking attorneys and a group
- 4:24of people that know me that really should have my back
- 4:28seemingly didn't. It felt like to me was having
- 4:31haters on the Internet anonymously and haters in the
- 4:34workplace. You know that quote, first that
- 4:36bitch hate me, then this bitch hate me and they link up and
- 4:38they become friends. Like huh.
- 4:39I have felt ostracized. I have felt I've done something
- 4:43wrong when I have it, and The thing is, is my office knows
- 4:47that they can't do anything to me.
- 4:48They just don't like the attention that these little
- 4:52freaks have brought to the office and they don't like that
- 4:56I am living my life happily outside of the workplace.
- 4:58OK, so the initial reaction to her decision seemed pretty
- 5:01mixed. Scrolling through comments
- 5:03underneath that video, many users seemed disappointed that
- 5:06she was quitting her law job for social media, considering it is
- 5:09obviously far less secure and prestigious.
- 5:12And also, like we love when we find creators that have quote UN
- 5:17quote, like regular lives or regular jobs and people follow
- 5:20them sometimes like for that type of content, like for that
- 5:23like day in the life of going to the office at corporate Batty,
- 5:26whatever it is. Sometimes we follow them for
- 5:29that type of content. And then of course, as they
- 5:31become more successful, they're able to sustain themselves off
- 5:34of content creation. And I understand why they would
- 5:36want to do that. Of course, like if you can not
- 5:39have to go into an office, if you don't have to have a boss,
- 5:41like if you can make all of your own money through those means.
- 5:44Like I understand why of course, like most people would choose
- 5:46that. But it does hurt for us, the
- 5:49followers when we feel like one of our faves has transitioned
- 5:53their content to being like a full time content creator.
- 5:55It's like obviously less relatable and sometimes it's
- 5:58less interesting. It's just like another one.
- 6:01OK. But also others in her comments
- 6:04are pretty supportive of her, especially after hearing about
- 6:07this experience. So some of the top comments one
- 6:10person wrote quitting being a lawyer over being on TikTok is
- 6:13wild. Social media isn't going to
- 6:15last. Someone else wrote nine years.
- 6:17You proved and shown your ability as an attorney for
- 6:19years. Two months change that.
- 6:21They 100% should have had your back.
- 6:23Someone else wrote she's quitting her attorney to be an
- 6:25influencer. Completely missed the point and
- 6:27didn't actually listen to her. All right.
- 6:28So now Jezebel has made a few follow up videos about the
- 6:31issue. So she has referenced other
- 6:33lawyer slash like content creators who have had similar
- 6:37experiences, explaining how many of these women were essentially
- 6:40being pushed out because her bosses who don't really
- 6:43understand social media didn't believe that she could do both
- 6:46successfully. Jezebel also doubled down on the
- 6:49fact that her performance was never the issue.
- 6:51In another video, she went into more details about the emails
- 6:54her workplace received and why the quote of quote investigation
- 6:57took place. So the author of the e-mail
- 7:00expressed concern about Jezebel working in the legal profession
- 7:03because of her content. They claimed that sharing quote
- 7:06explicit details of her sex life on public social media accounts
- 7:10and harassing and attacking individuals online was not
- 7:13appropriate contact for a lawyer.
- 7:15Jezebel alleges that these emails were sent to around 10
- 7:18people in her office. This is the e-mail that started
- 7:21the investigation. One person or a group of
- 7:23anonymous weirdos found my job, emailed about 10 different
- 7:27people at my job, and requested a formal investigation into me
- 7:32because as members of the community, they had deep
- 7:34concerns about someone like me being in the legal profession.
- 7:38My office never showed this to me.
- 7:40The only reason I got it when I got it was because they also
- 7:44sent it to my my manager, my brand manager Jillian.
- 7:46And Jillian forwarded this to me and said, girl, I just want you
- 7:49to know that I just got this. I'm assuming nothing's going to
- 7:51happen with this, but like, you should know that they sent this
- 7:54to your job. I read it and my stomach, my
- 7:56heart drops. Are you joking?
- 8:00Immediately screenshot the e-mail, send it to my friends
- 8:02that I work with. Every single one of my friends
- 8:04say it just says clearly some ChatGPT ass e-mail that these
- 8:09little weirdos wrote. Our office is gonna ignore it
- 8:12and do nothing about it. Like I wouldn't be stressed.
- 8:14I understand that you're upset that they did this, rightfully
- 8:17so. But like the extent that you're
- 8:18worried about your job, I would ignore it.
- 8:20I said OK, you're right. You're right.
- 8:22You're right. You're right.
- 8:23I'm losing sight of it. You're right.
- 8:24And then she also clarified the timeline that led to this point.
- 8:27So she said that her workplace was aware of her TikTok for a
- 8:30while before this first e-mail was sent.
- 8:33And they even approved of her quote UN quote outside
- 8:35employment. After the e-mail was when things
- 8:37like really changed for her in the workplace to the point where
- 8:40her caseload changed and they seemed to trust her less.
- 8:43They later went on to reject her quote UN quote outside
- 8:45employment after asking the office to submit it again.
- 8:48And basically this all led to her feeling like she was being
- 8:52forced out of her job and feeling like super paranoid
- 8:55about her coworkers. And then her most recent video,
- 8:59she shares that she has now 6 sexual harassment claims filed
- 9:06against her at work. So she said that the first one
- 9:11came in a few weeks before the e-mail, like calling for an
- 9:14investigation was sent. So the complaint alleged that
- 9:17Jezebel was talking about a brand deal she did, which was
- 9:20with an adult toy company in an elevator at work.
- 9:23This allegedly made the person who filed the complaint feel
- 9:26uncomfortable, and Jezebel said she has no recollection of
- 9:29talking about the brand deal at work.
- 9:30I got my sick sexual harassment claim filed against me at work
- 9:35because one thing about a Jezebel, we're always going to
- 9:37be persecuted. That's what I've been telling my
- 9:39friends these last couple months.
- 9:40So the troll e-mail was sent like in March.
- 9:43My first complaint against me was sometime early March.
- 9:49So that's a set. That's an entirely separate
- 9:51thing that I've been dealing with, by the way.
- 9:53That's an entirely separate department and entity.
- 9:56Then the department and the entity that was investigating me
- 9:59for whatever the hell they were investigating me for, my social
- 10:02media. And that department is actually
- 10:04an entirely separate department. And the department that was
- 10:06refusing to approve my outside employment.
- 10:09So really it was three different departments that I was having to
- 10:12like navigate and communicate with on top of just doing my
- 10:16fucking job on top of trying to do tick tock, on top of just
- 10:20trying to live my life. OK, it's been so much.
- 10:24Yesterday I get to my computer. 1/6 complaint filed against me,
- 10:28The first complaint, it's filed, it's anonymous.
- 10:31It's a scary e-mail that comes in and it says basically this
- 10:34complaint has been filed against you under case number of blah
- 10:37blah blah. The department is now going to
- 10:40investigate. If we determine that there is a
- 10:43legitimate basis for harassment in the workplace, we will reach
- 10:46out to you for a formal investigation.
- 10:48Does not tell you who made the complaint or what the complaint
- 10:51was about, but you can call and get more information if you want
- 10:56more information. I I had a feeling I had to with
- 10:58my social media because I was like this is so random.
- 11:01My opinion is that this person just watched my video.
- 11:05Felt like it was inappropriate that an attorney was promoting
- 11:09adult toys and then lodged A complaint and said that I was
- 11:13talking about it in an elevator. Nothing ever came of that.
- 11:16I guess the investigation LED them nowhere.
- 11:18I never heard anything about it. 3 weeks later is when I get the
- 11:21e-mail from the trolls saying they want me investigated.
- 11:25And shortly thereafter I got my second harassment complaint.
- 11:28Again, anonymous just says this complaint's been filed against
- 11:32you. The department's going to look
- 11:33into it. If you want more information,
- 11:34give us a call. I call again, I say hi, Jezebel,
- 11:37me again. What's this one about?
- 11:40Do you remember? In December I called a man an
- 11:43insell and I, and I'll tell you, oh, the man that got drunk,
- 11:47pulled my hair, gave me a kiss, told me you're not as hot as you
- 11:49think you are, called me a fucking bitch when I tried to
- 11:51put him in an Uber because he was embarrassing himself.
- 11:53That man. And I never said anything about
- 11:55that to anyone. I kept that to myself.
- 11:57That man went to our boss, filed a little complaint and said she
- 12:00called me an insell at a party. So yeah, she basically feels
- 12:03like the firm is coming at her from various different angles
- 12:08and was kind of like making it so uncomfortable for her that
- 12:12she felt forced out of the company.
- 12:15And a lot of people in her comments section think that
- 12:17based on all of the stories that she's told us that it's possible
- 12:21it is her colleagues that are like sending these emails.
- 12:25There are other people that think maybe it's from trolls,
- 12:28people that don't like her or fans of the previous of the
- 12:33other dating content creator. I think her name was Maddie Mads
- 12:37Watts. So there are people online that
- 12:39think maybe it's Mads Watts's like Maddie's followers or fans
- 12:44that are doing this. But like, that happened a long
- 12:46time ago. I don't know, maybe they're in a
- 12:49new feud that I haven't seen, but that was a long time ago.
- 12:53If something like that was going to happen, I imagine it would
- 12:54have happened back then, not now, but in general.
- 12:57Jezebel, she is saying like anonymous trolls, she's
- 13:01suspicious of her colleagues, but it's more so like Internet
- 13:03users that largely believe this must be mostly her colleagues.
- 13:08A lot of people believe that from her content.
- 13:10There's also a lot of discussion questioning whether something
- 13:14like this would ever happen to a man.
- 13:15We have seen this happen to other influencers like Brittany
- 13:18Broski spoke about how after she went viral, she was fired from
- 13:21her job at the time, which was in trust and investment
- 13:23services. I feel like it's possible it
- 13:26wouldn't have been handled in this way in the workplace if it
- 13:30was a man. In saying that though not
- 13:32everyone is supportive of Jezebel's decision or like
- 13:35believes her story in general, the snark pages right now are
- 13:39very active discussing every single video that she posts
- 13:42about the topic. OK the next story that I have
- 13:44for you guys today is a creator named Jesse Jean has gone
- 13:49extremely viral for her yapping challenge that has allegedly
- 13:53made her over $1 million. So Jessie's account is at Jessie
- 13:59Jean home and it's relatively new.
- 14:01Her oldest TikTok was posted in November of last year.
- 14:04She started making Tik Toks about pretty relatable topics
- 14:07like talking about career confusion, career pivots and
- 14:10other financial content. Now, towards the end of May,
- 14:13Jessie has started really gaining traction after posting
- 14:16content about her so-called Yap challenge.
- 14:19Here's what I think you should yap about.
- 14:21And you're talking direct to camera videos.
- 14:23I have somehow managed to yap my way to almost 400,000 followers
- 14:26in the last 4 1/2 months. This is what I think about
- 14:28before I make one of these. Types of posts In another, she
- 14:31was sharing details about the challenge, which essentially
- 14:33teaches attendees how to speak in a way that commands attention
- 14:37for short form video. This is what she wrote in a
- 14:39caption. Quote for six weeks.
- 14:42I'm breaking down how I grew from zero to 400 K followers in
- 14:45the last five months. The psychology, the hooks, the
- 14:48delivery, the storytelling, the stuff AI can't scrape.
- 14:51And every day for 40 days I pull up one of my actual viral posts.
- 14:54Breakdown exactly why it worked. Give you the hook angle
- 14:57structure. Teach the communication
- 14:59psychology behind it. We will drown the cringe in
- 15:02volume. OK, so the challenge was set to
- 15:04start on June 1st and the opportunity to sign up closed on
- 15:06May 31st. On May 28th she posted another
- 15:10video quote UN quote over sharing how much she had made
- 15:12from the challenge saying that it was just over $200,000.
- 15:16And now in a more recent video she is saying that she has
- 15:19made-up to $1.2 million. This is from a creator who only
- 15:24started in November, so a lot of people online have been
- 15:28discussing what made this launch so successful, especially when
- 15:31we're living in this era of so many like scammers and like fake
- 15:36gurus selling courses. My opinion on why this probably
- 15:40was so successful is first of all, I don't know how many
- 15:43courses are out there about how to like speak to camera,
- 15:46especially for TikTok or like short form video.
- 15:50Obviously there's a lot of like social media courses, but
- 15:53specifically framing it around like talking to camera, yapping
- 15:56to camera, that's incredibly specific.
- 15:58So it targets like a very niche market of people that are like,
- 16:01yes, I am interested in that skill.
- 16:04That is not a skill that I currently have and it's not too
- 16:06broad, right? It's like really, really
- 16:08specific, which I think is easier to buy, but also yapping
- 16:12to camera is not a skill that I think a lot of people are
- 16:15comfortable doing. And therefore it's going to be
- 16:18something that sells. It's not something that you
- 16:19often find in these courses. And it's also something that a
- 16:23lot of people are uncomfortable with.
- 16:25It's like public speaking. But you know, for camera, it's,
- 16:27it's, it's something that a lot of people are really nervous
- 16:30about, feel very cringe about, they're not comfortable with.
- 16:32So it makes sense to me why this was so successful.
- 16:35But that being said, there are a lot of people who are
- 16:38questioning the legitimacy of the challenge.
- 16:40In her comments section. There seem to be more supporters
- 16:43and skeptics, but there are some people that are like, is she
- 16:46just lying about these numbers to get more people to sign up?
- 16:49But yeah, people aren't losing their minds over this.
- 16:51Those who believe it are losing their minds.
- 16:53People are saying she's created this, like, movement that's
- 16:56helping her differentiate from other coaching content.
- 16:58Like, honestly, this is a really interesting case study if it's
- 17:02true. I believe it's true in how to
- 17:05actually market a course for something that people need and
- 17:09want. And it's such a good case study
- 17:11in like niching down. I hear niche down all the time.
- 17:13And then, you know, there's conflicting things on that.
- 17:15It's like, oh, can you niche down too much?
- 17:17Are you isolating, you know, yourself from a lot of the
- 17:20target audience? But this is a very interesting
- 17:23case study in the power of niching down and finding like a
- 17:26very, very specific sore spot for people and just like leaning
- 17:30into that. All right.
- 17:31And the last story that I have for you guys today, this is
- 17:35Speaking of niching down. This is niche.
- 17:37And unfortunately, Annabelle made me cover this.
- 17:41She is too deeply entrenched in this space and she wouldn't let
- 17:45me record this without covering it.
- 17:46So here we go. OK, Ariana Grande fans, they are
- 17:49coming for a concert goer who live streamed from the Eternal
- 17:53Sunshine Tour. A social media user named Igor
- 17:56is going viral among Ariana Grande fans.
- 17:59So basically, Igor often live streams concerts.
- 18:02He live streamed the first two shows of the Eternal Sunshine
- 18:05Tour, but he also went pretty viral for live streaming the
- 18:08era's tour a couple of years ago.
- 18:10Clips from Igor's dreams are making the rounds among the
- 18:12fandom, with users roasting him for singing in the background,
- 18:17comparing his voice to Mickey Mouse, which is honestly so
- 18:21diabolical, and allegedly turning the camera to himself
- 18:25during the show. So let me read you some tweets
- 18:27that show kind of like the general sentiment about this
- 18:30live stream 1 user wrote. Everyone seeing the same live
- 18:33stream, listening Igor singing with his Mickey Mouse voice and
- 18:36turning camera to himself. I'm so done that I'm going to
- 18:39wait for videos tomorrow. I've had enough for tonight,
- 18:41bye. Another user wrote when the job
- 18:43is live stream Ariana properly because you are close to her but
- 18:46my name is Igor and I'm shady as fuck.
- 18:49And another read. Anybody else getting annoyed by
- 18:51Igor's live stream or is it just me?
- 18:53OK so he is getting so much backlash for basically like live
- 18:57streaming the concert badly that he has made a video saying that
- 19:04he is not going to be live streaming anymore from the
- 19:07Eternal Sunshine tour and that many viewers and fans have been
- 19:10super ungrateful of his work. OK y'all, so night 2 is over.
- 19:15Thanks y'all for joining the live.
- 19:16This was the last time I'm going live from the Eternal Sunshine
- 19:19tour even though I'm going to more shows in LA because some of
- 19:23y'all are very ungrateful. You literally had the barricade
- 19:26view for the live and yet you have the other city to tell me
- 19:29what to say and what not to say. And also to those of y'all who
- 19:33think that this is my first time going live, you must Google the
- 19:37era store Igor's Live from three years ago and you will get some
- 19:42other information. About me Okay, so aside from
- 19:44being just generally insane, this has sparked a lot of
- 19:48discourse off the back of this about what live streamers
- 19:52actually owe viewers when they are streaming from events and
- 19:56concerts. I would say in general, viewers
- 19:58do seem to feel quite a bit of ownership over streamers.
- 20:01And I think this comes from the fact that streams are recorded
- 20:03in real time. So there is this kind of like
- 20:06back and forth between the viewer and the streamer that is
- 20:09different to static content or uploaded videos.
- 20:12There is more of that, I don't know, like maybe parasocialness
- 20:15because you feel like you're right there with the streamer.
- 20:17And then of course, finally there's like the gifting aspect.
- 20:20So people are actually financially investing in these
- 20:22creators in real time, which can make viewers feel like they are
- 20:25owed something from these streamers.
- 20:27This is actually a huge topic that I talked about with Sean a
- 20:30lot, my husband, because he's really into Twitch and has been
- 20:33for years. And there's frequently instances
- 20:36where Twitch streamers, you know, they're grinding away and
- 20:39people are like, so excited to support them and spending all
- 20:42their money, like supporting them and all this kind of stuff.
- 20:44And then when they get really, really big, there's this kind of
- 20:47like sense of entitlement from the viewers because they feel
- 20:49like they have given them so much time, so much energy, so
- 20:52much effort, and also so much money at the end of the day in
- 20:56this situation. The question is, though, should
- 20:58these expectations hold up when someone like Igor is streaming
- 21:02specifically from a concert? This is not something he has to
- 21:05do and some viewers do seem to hold the sentiment.
- 21:09So under 1 TikTok shading Igor users seem to be defending him.
- 21:13Someone wrote quote yeah they're at the concert.
- 21:15They paid for the ticket and they get to have fun.
- 21:18They literally are doing people a favor by going live.
- 21:20Don't expect them to stay silent and let them enjoy themselves.
- 21:23Or pay someone to record to not speak I guess because people are
- 21:27saying like he needs to stop singing over top of the show
- 21:29someone else wrote. Girl he literally did a stream
- 21:32on opening night and said he wouldn't sing for that.
- 21:34He had every right to sing at the second show and finally
- 21:36someone wrote. Mind you he's streaming out of
- 21:38his own will. There's plenty of other people
- 21:40streaming. He's having fun, you should be
- 21:42too. I'm curious to hear what you
- 21:43guys think about this. My initial gut reaction is like,
- 21:48it's his live stream, you don't have to watch it.
- 21:50I understand that he probably makes money from the live
- 21:53stream. So it is like quote UN quote, a
- 21:54job somewhat, but we don't have to watch that live stream and
- 21:59agree he paid for the ticket. So he's having fun and like if
- 22:03you want to be at a concert with somebody who is having fun, then
- 22:06you can watch his live stream. But if you want to hear Ariana
- 22:10Grande's voice and not like anybody else's voice, including
- 22:14his, I am sure there's countless other videos that you can watch
- 22:17on TikTok of that. I don't know, I think that's my
- 22:20gut reaction, but I'm curious to hear what you guys think.
- 22:22And I feel like this is literally just like scratching
- 22:24the surface of like the live stream dynamic culture and how
- 22:31that kind of plays out online and with an audience dynamics.
- 22:34I'm actually really interested in this.
- 22:35Maybe we should make it into a deep dive topic for another day.
- 22:40Anyways guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 22:42I don't know if you guys could tell, but I got like 4 phone
- 22:45calls in the middle of recording this.
- 22:47This has been such a chaotic record, but thank you so much
- 22:50for listening. I love you guys.
