Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The economic freeze has no end in sight
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And it's about that time of year when it feels
- 0:03Speaker 1: like winter is really starting to drag. And I think
- 0:07Speaker 1: it must be really starting to drag for Christopher Luxen too.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It's cold, it's dark. We just want to be at
- 0:15Speaker 1: the beach, like all of our poser friends on Instagram
- 0:17Speaker 1: who are in Bali or Europe being absolute you know
- 0:21Speaker 1: what's but we endure this gloomy season safe in the
- 0:25Speaker 1: knowledge that one day, in a month or so, springtime
- 0:27Speaker 1: will come, the days will get longer, everything about life
- 0:30Speaker 1: will just feel easier, easy, breezy, warm, great, get me
- 0:34Speaker 1: to it now. Contrast that to the economic winter that
- 0:37Speaker 1: we're simultaneously enduring right now, and you can see that
- 0:40Speaker 1: there's an immediate problem. Unlike winter, which we know will
- 0:43Speaker 1: end soon, this economic funk has graced us longer than
- 0:47Speaker 1: the gfc's inflation is on its way back up. For goodness, Sacks,
- 0:51Speaker 1: we may have bounced out of a recession for a
- 0:52Speaker 1: few quarters, but there's also a good chance we currently
- 0:55Speaker 1: back in negative growth territory. That's after three years of
- 1:00Speaker 1: unaffordable food, your mortgages, pretty much everything. You know this,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I know this. Politicians are arguing again at the weekend
- 1:09Speaker 1: about who's to blame. The answer, of course is the
- 1:12Speaker 1: Labor Party, the Reserve Bank. They went too far and
- 1:15Speaker 1: responding to the virus, and then we continue down the
- 1:19Speaker 1: spending spree, spending like a drunken sailor. Trump hasn't helped
- 1:23Speaker 1: just recently. The problem for National is that voters don't
- 1:26Speaker 1: seem to care much who started the fire. They just
- 1:29Speaker 1: want the whole thing put out quickly, and they need
- 1:33Speaker 1: to feel the numbers. This is National's problem, This is
- 1:36Speaker 1: the problem. They need to feel the numbers, not the
- 1:39Speaker 1: OCR announcement the top line, but they need to feel
- 1:43Speaker 1: the mortgage refixing on a lower rate. Food price inflation
- 1:47Speaker 1: is still going up, so things might be getting more
- 1:50Speaker 1: expensive less quickly, but they're still going up in price,
- 1:55Speaker 1: aren't they. Only once people feel different will the Poles respond.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For your Christopher Luxance. The biggest problem for the Coalition
- 2:04Speaker 1: on waiting for that to happen is not that some
- 2:07Speaker 1: might convert to Labor voters in the meantime, but that
- 2:10Speaker 1: they might jump ship all together and move to Brisbane.
