  Yeah,
• 0:44
  it
• 0:44
  really
• 0:45
  has
• 0:45
  kept

  up

  with

• 1:01
  Hello,
• 1:01
  ladies.
• 1:01
  Thanks
• 1:02
  for
• 1:02
  being
• 1:02
  here.
• 1:03
  You
• 1:03
  know,
• 1:04
  first
• 1:04
  question.
• 1:06
  Well,
• 1:06
  first,
• 1:06
  congratulations
• 1:07
  on
• 1:07
  100
• 1:08
  years.
• 1:09
  Thank
• 1:09
  you.
• 1:09
  I
• 1:10
  guess
• 1:10
  we
• 1:10
  should
• 1:10
  all
• 1:10
  feel
• 1:11
  so
• 1:11
  lucky
• 1:11
  that
• 1:11
  we
• 1:12
  still
• 1:12
  have
• 1:12
  such
• 1:12
  a
• 1:12
  giant
• 1:14
  resource
• 1:14
  available
• 1:15
  to
• 1:15
  us.
• 1:16
  But,
• 1:16
  you
• 1:17
  know,
• 1:17
  so
• 1:17
  much
• 1:17
  has
• 1:17
  changed,
• 1:18
  obviously,
• 1:19
  since
• 1:19
  the
• 1:20
  library
• 1:20
  was
• 1:21
  founded.
• 1:22
  What
• 1:22
  do
• 1:22
  you
• 1:22
  think
• 1:23
  the
• 1:23
  most
• 1:23
  significant
• 1:24
  role
• 1:25
  of
• 1:25
  the
• 1:25
  library
• 1:26
  is
• 1:27
  today?
• 1:27
  Well,
• 1:28
  you
• 1:28
  know,
• 1:28
  we
• 1:28
  are
• 1:28
  the
• 1:28
  Los
• 1:29
  Angeles
• 1:29
  Public
• 1:29
  Library,
• 1:30
  and
• 1:30
  Central
• 1:30
  Library
• 1:31
  is
• 1:31
  just,
• 1:31
  you
• 1:32
  know,
• 1:32
  one
• 1:33
  of
• 1:33
  our
• 1:33
  locations.
• 1:34
  We
• 1:34
  have
• 1:34
  73
• 1:35
  locations
• 1:35
  throughout
• 1:36
  the
• 1:36
  entire
• 1:36
  city.
• 1:37
  And
• 1:38
  we
• 1:38
  honestly
• 1:39
  try
• 1:40
  to
• 1:40
  be
• 1:41
  everything
• 1:41
  to
• 1:42
  everyone,
• 1:43
  you
• 1:43
  know,
• 1:44
  in
• 1:44
  our
• 1:44
  city.
• 1:44
  And
• 1:45
  that
• 1:45
  certainly
• 1:46
  has
• 1:46
  evolved
• 1:47
  over
• 1:47
  the
• 1:47
  last
• 1:48
  decade
• 1:48
  or
• 1:48
  even
• 1:48
  the
• 1:49
  150
• 1:49
  years
• 1:49
  that
• 1:50
  we've
• 1:50
  been
• 1:50
  around.
• 1:50
  So,
• 1:51
  yeah,
• 1:51
  yes,
• 1:51
  like
• 1:51
  originally
• 1:52
  it
• 1:52
  was
• 1:52
  very
• 1:52
  core
• 1:53
  information,
• 1:54
  which
• 1:54
  came
• 1:54
  in
• 1:54
  print
• 1:55
  form,
• 1:55
  and
• 1:56
  how
• 1:56
  we
• 1:56
  deliver
• 1:56
  information
• 1:57
  has
• 1:57
  evolved.
• 1:59
  But
• 1:59
  I
• 2:00
  think
• 2:00
  with
• 2:01
  technology
• 2:02
  that
• 2:02
  has
• 2:03
  just
• 2:03
  advanced
• 2:04
  so
• 2:04
  much
• 2:04
  in
• 2:05
  the
• 2:05
  last
• 2:05
  30
• 2:05
  years
• 2:06
  since
• 2:06
  Central
• 2:06
  Library
• 2:07
  reopened,
• 2:08
  we
• 2:08
  see
• 2:08
  where
• 2:08
  that's
• 2:09
  playing
• 2:09
  a
• 2:09
  big
• 2:09
  role.
• 2:10
  So
• 2:10
  we
• 2:10
  now
• 2:10
  have
• 2:11
  our
• 2:11
  Octavia
• 2:11
  Lab
• 2:12
  that
• 2:12
  offers
• 2:13
  all
• 2:13
  kinds
• 2:14
  of
• 2:14
  different
• 2:14
  technologies
• 2:15
  like
• 2:15
  3D
• 2:16
  printing
• 2:16
  and
• 2:16
  laser
• 2:17
  cutting
• 2:17
  and
• 2:17
  podcast
• 2:17
  studios
• 2:18
  and
• 2:19
  embroidery
• 2:20
  machines.
• 2:21
  So
• 2:21
  we're
• 2:21
  able
• 2:21
  to
• 2:21
  offer
• 2:22
  all
• 2:22
  of
• 2:22
  that
• 2:22
  to
• 2:22
  our
• 2:23
  public
• 2:23
  free
• 2:23
  of
• 2:24
  charge.
• 2:24
  But
• 2:25
  then
• 2:25
  we
• 2:25
  also
• 2:25
  have
• 2:25
  a
• 2:26
  lot
• 2:26
  of
• 2:26
  different,
• 2:26
  you
• 2:27
  know,
• 2:27
  outreach
• 2:28
  and
• 2:28
  engaging
• 2:28
  initiatives
• 2:30
  that
• 2:30
  Madeline
• 2:30
  can
• 2:31
  talk
• 2:31
  a
• 2:31
  little
• 2:31
  bit
• 2:31
  about.
• 2:32
  We
• 2:33
  have,
• 2:33
  for
• 2:33
  example,
• 2:33
  the
• 2:34
  New
• 2:34
  Americans
• 2:35
  program
• 2:35
  so
• 2:35
  we
• 2:36
  can
• 2:36
  help
• 2:36
  immigrants
• 2:38
  with
• 2:38
  their
• 2:38
  journey
• 2:39
  becoming
• 2:39
  new
• 2:40
  Americans.
• 2:41
  We
• 2:41
  have
• 2:41
  the
• 2:41
  Career
• 2:42
  Line
• 2:42
  High
• 2:42
  School,
• 2:43
  which
• 2:43
  allow
• 2:44
  allows
• 2:45
  adults
• 2:46
  to
• 2:46
  earn
• 2:46
  their
• 2:46
  high
• 2:47
  school
• 2:47
  diploma
• 2:48
  and
• 2:48
  a
• 2:48
  career
• 2:48
  certificate
• 2:49
  for
• 2:49
  free.
• 2:51
  We
• 2:51
  also
• 2:51
  have
• 2:51
  many
• 2:52
  programs
• 2:53
  and
• 2:53
  services
• 2:54
  for
• 2:54
  youth,
• 2:55
  for
• 2:55
  kids
• 2:55
  and
• 2:56
  parents,
• 2:56
  for
• 2:57
  teens,
• 2:57
  helping
• 2:58
  them
• 2:59
  get
• 2:59
  ready
• 2:59
  for
• 2:59
  college
• 3:00
  and
• 3:00
  get
• 3:01
  the
• 3:01
  balance
• 3:02
  right.
• 3:03
  And
• 3:03
  we
• 3:03
  do
• 3:03
  have
• 3:04
  a
• 3:04
  library
• 3:04
  of
• 3:04
  things
• 3:04
  that
• 3:05
  people
• 3:05
  can
• 3:05
  take
• 3:06
  home
• 3:06
  and
• 3:07
  use
• 3:07
  in
• 3:08
  addition
• 3:08
  to
• 3:08
  books.
• 3:09
  For
• 3:09
  example,
• 3:10
  we
• 3:10
  have
• 3:13
  Explore
• 3:14
  LA
• 3:14
  with
• 3:14
  Discover
• 3:15
  and
• 3:15
  Go,
• 3:15
  which
• 3:15
  is
• 3:16
  a
• 3:16
  program
• 3:16
  that
• 3:16
  lets
• 3:17
  people
• 3:17
  reserve
• 3:18
  free
• 3:19
  and
• 3:19
  discounted
• 3:20
  Passes
• 3:20
  to
• 3:20
  museums,
• 3:21
  cultural
• 3:22
  institutions,
• 3:23
  and
• 3:23
  even
• 3:24
  sports
• 3:24
  venues
• 3:25
  in
• 3:25
  la.
• 3:26
  Using
• 3:26
  their
• 3:27
  library
• 3:27
  card,
• 3:28
  people
• 3:28
  can
• 3:28
  check
• 3:29
  out
• 3:29
  the
• 3:30
  California
• 3:31
  State
• 3:31
  park
• 3:32
  pass
• 3:32
  so
• 3:32
  they
• 3:33
  can,
• 3:33
  for
• 3:33
  free,
• 3:34
  access
• 3:34
  our
• 3:35
  state
• 3:35
  parks
• 3:36
  and
• 3:36
  beaches.
• 3:37
  And
• 3:38
  we
• 3:39
  have
• 3:40
  STEM
• 3:40
  kits,
• 3:41
  we
• 3:41
  have
• 3:41
  citizen
• 3:41
  science
• 3:42
  kits
• 3:42
  that
• 3:43
  people
• 3:43
  can
• 3:43
  take
• 3:43
  home.
• 3:43
  We
• 3:44
  have
• 3:44
  books
• 3:45
  and
• 3:45
  toy
• 3:46
  kits
• 3:47
  for
• 3:47
  families
• 3:47
  so
• 3:48
  they
• 3:48
  can
• 3:48
  have
• 3:48
  a
• 3:49
  refreshed
• 3:49
  collection
• 3:50
  of
• 3:50
  books
• 3:51
  and
• 3:51
  toys
• 3:51
  for
• 3:51
  their
• 3:52
  kids.
• 3:52
  So
• 3:52
  what
• 3:53
  Christina
• 3:53
  said
• 3:54
  is
• 3:54
  that
• 3:54
  our
• 3:55
  commitment
• 3:55
  as
• 3:56
  the
• 3:56
  Los
• 3:56
  Angeles
• 3:57
  Public
• 3:57
  Library
• 3:58
  is
• 3:58
  to
• 3:58
  change
• 3:59
  and
• 3:59
  evolve
• 4:00
  along
• 4:00
  with
• 4:00
  the
• 4:00
  needs
• 4:01
  of
• 4:01
  our
• 4:01
  communities.
• 4:02
  That
• 4:03
  goes
• 4:03
  to
• 4:03
  technology.
• 4:04
  And
• 4:04
  with
• 4:05
  technology,
• 4:05
  we
• 4:05
  even
• 4:06
  check
• 4:06
  out
• 4:06
  hotspots
• 4:08
  and
• 4:08
  laptops
• 4:09
  that
• 4:09
  people
• 4:09
  can.
• 4:10
  Can
• 4:10
  take
• 4:10
  out,
• 4:12
  borrow
• 4:12
  and
• 4:13
  take
• 4:13
  home.
• 4:14
  And
• 4:14
  so
• 4:14
  that's
• 4:15
  our
• 4:15
  commitment
• 4:15
  to
• 4:15
  evolve
• 4:16
  and
• 4:16
  change,
• 4:17
  be
• 4:17
  flexible
• 4:18
  and
• 4:18
  adaptable
• 4:19
  to,
• 4:19
  responsive
• 4:20
  to
• 4:20
  the
• 4:21
  needs
• 4:21
  of
• 4:21
  our
• 4:21
  community,
• 4:22
  because
• 4:22
  that's
• 4:22
  our
• 4:23
  goal.
• 4:23
  Connect
• 4:24
  people
• 4:24
  to
• 4:25
  everything
• 4:25
  library
• 4:26
  has
• 4:26
  to
• 4:26
  offer
• 4:26
  and
• 4:26
  also
• 4:26
  be
• 4:27
  that
• 4:27
  space
• 4:27
  where
• 4:27
  people
• 4:28
  can
• 4:28
  connect
• 4:29
  within
• 4:29
  each
• 4:29
  other.
• 4:31
  Now,
• 4:31
  all
• 4:32
  of
• 4:32
  this
• 4:32
  is.
• 4:32
  All
• 4:32
  of
• 4:33
  this
• 4:33
  is
• 4:33
  free
• 4:33
  with
• 4:34
  a
• 4:34
  library
• 4:34
  card,
• 4:34
  right?
• 4:35
  I
• 4:35
  mean,
• 4:35
  no,
• 4:35
  there's
• 4:36
  no
• 4:36
  charge
• 4:36
  for
• 4:36
  this.
• 4:37
  Free.
• 4:37
  99.
• 4:37
  All
• 4:38
  free.
• 4:40
  Hal
• 4:40
  Hunter.
• 4:41
  Did
• 4:41
  you
• 4:41
  guys
• 4:42
  know
• 4:42
  that
• 4:42
  there
• 4:42
  was
• 4:43
  3D
• 4:43
  printing
• 4:44
  and
• 4:44
  podcast
• 4:45
  studios?
• 4:45
  Is
• 4:45
  this
• 4:46
  just
• 4:46
  at
• 4:46
  the
• 4:46
  central
• 4:47
  location
• 4:48
  or
• 4:48
  is
• 4:48
  it
• 4:49
  throughout
• 4:49
  the
• 4:49
  public
• 4:50
  libraries
• 4:50
  or
• 4:51
  certain
• 4:52
  ones?
• 4:53
  So
• 4:53
  it
• 4:53
  is
• 4:54
  primarily
• 4:54
  at
• 4:54
  Central
• 4:54
  Library.
• 4:55
  We
• 4:55
  have
• 4:55
  our
• 4:55
  Octavia
• 4:56
  Lab.
• 4:57
  And
• 4:57
  then
• 4:57
  at
• 4:58
  our
• 4:58
  Pio
• 4:58
  Pico
• 4:58
  branch,
• 4:59
  we
• 4:59
  do
• 4:59
  have
• 5:00
  a
• 5:00
  smaller
• 5:00
  lab
• 5:01
  that
• 5:01
  offers
• 5:01
  some
• 5:01
  of
• 5:01
  those
• 5:02
  services.
• 5:03
  But,
• 5:03
  yeah,
• 5:03
  primarily
• 5:04
  it's
• 5:04
  most
• 5:04
  accessible
• 5:05
  at
• 5:05
  Central
• 5:05
  Library.
• 5:06
  I
• 5:06
  don't
• 5:06
  know
• 5:07
  what
• 5:07
  that
• 5:07
  means.
• 5:07
  What's
• 5:07
  an
• 5:07
  Octavia
• 5:08
  Lab?
• 5:09
  Well,
• 5:10
  it
• 5:10
  is
• 5:11
  our
• 5:11
  media
• 5:11
  lab
• 5:12
  that
• 5:12
  has
• 5:12
  all
• 5:13
  of
• 5:13
  those
• 5:13
  different
• 5:13
  resources.
• 5:14
  And
• 5:14
  we
• 5:15
  named
• 5:15
  it
• 5:16
  after
• 5:16
  Octavia
• 5:17
  Butler,
• 5:17
  the
• 5:17
  author,
• 5:18
  because
• 5:19
  she
• 5:19
  was
• 5:19
  such
• 5:20
  a
• 5:20
  big
• 5:20
  fan
• 5:20
  and
• 5:21
  supporter
• 5:21
  of
• 5:21
  Central
• 5:22
  Library
• 5:23
  and
• 5:23
  did
• 5:23
  research
• 5:24
  and
• 5:25
  wrote
• 5:25
  her
• 5:25
  books
• 5:26
  at
• 5:26
  Central
• 5:26
  Library.
• 5:27
  So
• 5:27
  that
• 5:27
  was
• 5:27
  a
• 5:28
  way
• 5:28
  for
• 5:28
  us
• 5:28
  to
• 5:29
  honor
• 5:29
  her.
• 5:29
  So
• 5:29
  that's
• 5:29
  why
• 5:30
  we
• 5:30
  call
• 5:30
  it
• 5:30
  our
• 5:30
  Octavia
• 5:31
  Lab.
• 5:32
  I
• 5:32
  love.
• 5:32
  I
• 5:32
  remember
• 5:33
  back
• 5:33
  about,
• 5:35
  oh,
• 5:35
  the
• 5:35
  1800s.
• 5:38
  You
• 5:38
  do
• 5:39
  not.
• 5:39
  They
• 5:39
  were
• 5:39
  talking,
• 5:40
  the
• 5:40
  city
• 5:40
  council
• 5:41
  back
• 5:41
  then,
• 5:41
  I
• 5:41
  think
• 5:41
  it
• 5:41
  was
• 5:41
  a
• 5:42
  town
• 5:42
  council.
• 5:42
  They
• 5:43
  were
• 5:43
  talking
• 5:43
  about
• 5:43
  the
• 5:43
  idea
• 5:44
  of
• 5:44
  a
• 5:44
  library
• 5:45
  system.
• 5:46
  And
• 5:47
  I.
• 5:48
  Jk,
• 5:48
  jk,
• 5:49
  I'm
• 5:49
  joking.
• 5:49
  But.
• 5:50
  But
• 5:50
  I
• 5:50
  do,
• 5:50
  I
• 5:50
  do
• 5:51
  remember
• 5:51
  as
• 5:51
  a
• 5:51
  kid,
• 5:52
  I.
• 5:53
  I
• 5:53
  grew
• 5:53
  up
• 5:53
  in
• 5:53
  Dallas,
• 5:54
  and
• 5:54
  I
• 5:54
  remember
• 5:54
  as
• 5:54
  a
• 5:55
  kid
• 5:56
  going
• 5:56
  to
• 5:56
  the
• 5:56
  library
• 5:57
  and
• 5:58
  listening
• 5:59
  to
• 5:59
  records.
• 6:00
  Those
• 6:00
  were
• 6:01
  these
• 6:01
  things
• 6:02
  that
• 6:02
  were
• 6:02
  made
• 6:02
  of
• 6:02
  vinyl.
• 6:03
  And
• 6:04
  I
• 6:04
  remember
• 6:04
  they
• 6:05
  had
• 6:05
  these
• 6:05
  little
• 6:05
  rooms
• 6:06
  that
• 6:07
  you
• 6:07
  would
• 6:07
  go
• 6:07
  into
• 6:07
  and
• 6:08
  listen
• 6:08
  to
• 6:08
  them
• 6:08
  with
• 6:08
  headsets.
• 6:10
  And
• 6:11
  it
• 6:11
  was,
• 6:11
  you
• 6:11
  know,
• 6:12
  it
• 6:12
  was
• 6:12
  a
• 6:12
  delight
• 6:12
  for
• 6:13
  me
• 6:13
  to
• 6:14
  be
• 6:14
  able
• 6:14
  to
• 6:14
  go
• 6:14
  to
• 6:14
  the
• 6:14
  library
• 6:15
  to
• 6:15
  listen
• 6:15
  to
• 6:16
  a
• 6:16
  record.
• 6:17
  And
• 6:17
  I
• 6:17
  thought
• 6:17
  that
• 6:18
  was
• 6:18
  very
• 6:18
  cool.
• 6:18
  Now,
• 6:18
  if
• 6:18
  you
• 6:19
  look
• 6:19
  at
• 6:19
  what
• 6:19
  you're
• 6:19
  talking
• 6:20
  about
• 6:20
  today.
• 6:21
  That
• 6:21
  is
• 6:21
  extraordinary.
• 6:23
  The
• 6:23
  leaps
• 6:24
  and
• 6:24
  bounds
• 6:25
  have
• 6:25
  broken
• 6:26
  whatever
• 6:26
  barriers
• 6:27
  used
• 6:27
  to
• 6:27
  seemingly
• 6:28
  exist.
• 6:29
  And
• 6:29
  I'm
• 6:30
  sort
• 6:30
  of
• 6:30
  wondering,
• 6:31
  you
• 6:31
  know,
• 6:32
  is
• 6:32
  there
• 6:33
  just
• 6:33
  no
• 6:33
  limitation?
• 6:34
  As
• 6:34
  soon
• 6:34
  as
• 6:34
  something
• 6:35
  new
• 6:35
  comes
• 6:35
  along,
• 6:35
  the
• 6:35
  library
• 6:36
  starts
• 6:36
  going,
• 6:37
  how
• 6:37
  do
• 6:37
  we
• 6:38
  embrace
• 6:38
  that?
• 6:39
  Yeah,
• 6:40
  I
• 6:40
  mean,
• 6:40
  I
• 6:40
  think
• 6:40
  that's
• 6:41
  definitely
• 6:42
  a
• 6:42
  strength
• 6:42
  of
• 6:42
  just
• 6:43
  the
• 6:43
  librarian
• 6:43
  profession
• 6:44
  in
• 6:44
  general.
• 6:45
  I
• 6:45
  think,
• 6:45
  you
• 6:45
  know,
• 6:45
  we.
• 6:46
  People
• 6:46
  have
• 6:47
  been
• 6:47
  declaring
• 6:47
  the
• 6:47
  library
• 6:48
  obsolete
• 6:49
  since,
• 6:49
  I
• 6:50
  mean,
• 6:50
  at
• 6:50
  least
• 6:50
  the
• 6:50
  1970s,
• 6:51
  when
• 6:51
  computers
• 6:52
  really
• 6:52
  started
• 6:52
  to
• 6:52
  come
• 6:53
  around.
• 6:53
  And
• 6:53
  so
• 6:54
  I
• 6:54
  think
• 6:54
  because
• 6:55
  we
• 6:55
  have
• 6:55
  been
• 6:55
  declared
• 6:56
  obsolete
• 6:56
  so
• 6:57
  much,
• 6:57
  we're
• 6:58
  always
• 6:58
  so
• 6:58
  conscious
• 6:59
  about
• 7:00
  what
• 7:00
  our
• 7:00
  role
• 7:00
  is,
• 7:01
  to
• 7:01
  make
• 7:02
  sure
• 7:02
  we
• 7:02
  don't
• 7:02
  become
• 7:02
  obsolete.
• 7:04
  So,
• 7:04
  yeah,
• 7:04
  I
• 7:04
  think
• 7:04
  librarians
• 7:05
  are
• 7:05
  really
• 7:05
  good
• 7:06
  at
• 7:06
  keeping
• 7:07
  up
• 7:07
  with
• 7:08
  what
• 7:08
  the
• 7:08
  newest
• 7:08
  technology
• 7:09
  is.
• 7:09
  Again,
• 7:10
  like
• 7:10
  Madeline
• 7:11
  had
• 7:11
  mentioned
• 7:11
  what
• 7:12
  the
• 7:12
  needs
• 7:12
  of
• 7:13
  our
• 7:13
  patrons
• 7:13
  are
• 7:14
  or
• 7:14
  are
• 7:14
  the
• 7:15
  anticipated
• 7:15
  needs,
• 7:16
  and
• 7:16
  then
• 7:17
  figuring
• 7:17
  out
• 7:18
  how
• 7:18
  we're
• 7:18
  going
• 7:18
  to
• 7:18
  afford
• 7:19
  to
• 7:19
  get
• 7:19
  these
• 7:19
  things
• 7:20
  and
• 7:20
  then
• 7:20
  how
• 7:20
  we're
• 7:20
  going
• 7:20
  to
• 7:21
  be
• 7:21
  able
• 7:21
  to
• 7:21
  stay
• 7:21
  staff
• 7:22
  them.
• 7:22
  But.
• 7:23
  But,
• 7:23
  yeah,
• 7:24
  and
• 7:24
  one
• 7:24
  thing
• 7:25
  we
• 7:25
  didn't
• 7:25
  mention
• 7:26
  is
• 7:27
  we
• 7:27
  talked
• 7:28
  about
• 7:28
  the
• 7:28
  podcast,
• 7:29
  we
• 7:29
  talked
• 7:29
  about
• 7:29
  Octavia.
• 7:30
  We
• 7:30
  already
• 7:30
  talked
• 7:31
  about
• 7:31
  these
• 7:31
  different
• 7:31
  things,
• 7:32
  but
• 7:32
  the
• 7:32
  reality
• 7:33
  is
• 7:33
  you
• 7:33
  even
• 7:33
  have
• 7:33
  an
• 7:33
  app
• 7:34
  where
• 7:34
  you
• 7:34
  can
• 7:34
  hear
• 7:34
  audiobooks
• 7:35
  as
• 7:36
  long
• 7:36
  as
• 7:36
  you've
• 7:36
  got
• 7:36
  a
• 7:36
  library
• 7:37
  card,
• 7:38
  100%.
• 7:39
  We
• 7:39
  have
• 7:39
  our
• 7:39
  Libby
• 7:40
  app,
• 7:40
  and
• 7:40
  people
• 7:40
  can
• 7:41
  do
• 7:41
  audiobooks.
• 7:41
  They
• 7:42
  can
• 7:42
  check
• 7:42
  out,
• 7:43
  you
• 7:43
  know,
• 7:43
  ebooks.
• 7:44
  I
• 7:44
  think
• 7:44
  we're
• 7:44
  the
• 7:45
  largest
• 7:45
  lender
• 7:46
  of
• 7:46
  ebooks
• 7:47
  in
• 7:47
  the
• 7:47
  country.
• 7:48
  We
• 7:49
  have
• 7:49
  a
• 7:49
  lot
• 7:49
  of
• 7:49
  other
• 7:49
  apps
• 7:50
  people
• 7:50
  can
• 7:50
  use
• 7:50
  to
• 7:51
  watch
• 7:51
  movies
• 7:51
  and
• 7:51
  music
• 7:52
  videos.
• 7:52
  And
• 7:53
  so,
• 7:54
  yes,
• 7:54
  so,
• 7:55
  you
• 7:55
  know,
• 7:55
  our
• 7:55
  job
• 7:55
  is
• 7:56
  to
• 7:56
  provide
• 7:56
  access
• 7:57
  to
• 7:57
  information.
• 7:57
  And
• 7:58
  these
• 7:58
  days,
• 7:58
  information
• 7:59
  comes
• 7:59
  in
• 8:00
  a
• 8:00
  lot
• 8:00
  of
• 8:01
  different
• 8:01
  formats,
• 8:02
  so
• 8:02
  we're
• 8:02
  always
• 8:03
  staying
• 8:03
  on
• 8:03
  top
• 8:04
  of
• 8:04
  how
• 8:04
  we
• 8:04
  can
• 8:05
  provide
• 8:05
  that.
• 8:05
  And
• 8:05
  I
• 8:06
  just
• 8:06
  wanted
• 8:06
  to
• 8:06
  go
• 8:06
  back
• 8:06
  to
• 8:06
  you
• 8:06
  talking
• 8:07
  about
• 8:07
  being
• 8:07
  in,
• 8:07
  like,
• 8:08
  the
• 8:08
  listening
• 8:08
  booths,
• 8:08
  and
• 8:08
  that's
• 8:09
  just,
• 8:09
  you
• 8:09
  know,
• 8:09
  an
• 8:09
  example
• 8:10
  of
• 8:10
  how
• 8:10
  we
• 8:10
  have
• 8:10
  evolved.
• 8:11
  So,
• 8:11
  yes,
• 8:11
  we
• 8:11
  had
• 8:12
  an
• 8:12
  audio
• 8:12
  visual
• 8:13
  department
• 8:13
  starting
• 8:13
  in
• 8:13
  the
• 8:14
  1960s
• 8:14
  where
• 8:15
  people
• 8:15
  could
• 8:15
  come
• 8:15
  listen
• 8:15
  to
• 8:16
  the
• 8:16
  records
• 8:16
  going
• 8:17
  back
• 8:17
  to,
• 8:17
  like,
• 8:17
  the
• 8:17
  1930s
• 8:18
  and
• 8:18
  40s.
• 8:18
  We
• 8:18
  used
• 8:19
  to
• 8:19
  have
• 8:19
  piano
• 8:19
  practice
• 8:20
  rooms
• 8:21
  because,
• 8:21
  you
• 8:22
  know,
• 8:22
  having
• 8:22
  access
• 8:23
  to
• 8:23
  a
• 8:23
  piano
• 8:23
  or
• 8:23
  a
• 8:24
  keyboard
• 8:25
  could
• 8:25
  be
• 8:26
  such
• 8:26
  a
• 8:26
  barrier
• 8:26
  back
• 8:27
  then.
• 8:27
  And
• 8:27
  I've
• 8:28
  talked
• 8:28
  to
• 8:28
  people
• 8:28
  who's,
• 8:29
  you
• 8:29
  know,
• 8:30
  one
• 8:30
  of
• 8:31
  our
• 8:31
  longtime
• 8:31
  volunteers,
• 8:32
  her
• 8:32
  dad,
• 8:32
  in
• 8:32
  the
• 8:33
  1940s,
• 8:33
  they
• 8:33
  came
• 8:33
  to
• 8:34
  the
• 8:34
  library
• 8:34
  once
• 8:34
  a
• 8:34
  week,
• 8:34
  and
• 8:35
  she
• 8:35
  would
• 8:35
  go
• 8:35
  to
• 8:35
  the
• 8:35
  children's
• 8:36
  room
• 8:36
  while
• 8:37
  her
• 8:37
  dad
• 8:37
  went
• 8:37
  to
• 8:37
  the
• 8:38
  piano
• 8:38
  practice
• 8:38
  room,
• 8:39
  because
• 8:39
  that
• 8:39
  was
• 8:39
  the
• 8:39
  only
• 8:40
  way
• 8:40
  he
• 8:40
  could
• 8:40
  practice
• 8:41
  on.
• 8:41
  On
• 8:41
  a
• 8:41
  piano.
• 8:42
  So
• 8:43
  this
• 8:43
  is
• 8:43
  something
• 8:44
  that
• 8:44
  we've
• 8:44
  always
• 8:44
  been
• 8:45
  doing
• 8:45
  at
• 8:45
  Central
• 8:46
  Library,
• 8:46
  and
• 8:46
  the
• 8:46
  system
• 8:47
  for
• 8:47
  our
• 8:47
  entire
• 8:48
  existence
• 8:49
  Right.
• 8:49
  And
• 8:50
  I'm
• 8:51
  sorry,
• 8:51
  Hunter,
• 8:52
  I
• 8:53
  want
• 8:53
  to
• 8:53
  see
• 8:54
  if
• 8:54
  my
• 8:54
  memory
• 8:54
  is
• 8:55
  correct
• 8:55
  on
• 8:55
  this.
• 8:56
  Is
• 8:56
  there
• 8:56
  a
• 8:56
  mobile
• 8:57
  unit
• 8:58
  for
• 8:58
  LA
• 8:58
  Central
• 8:59
  Library?
• 9:00
  Is
• 9:01
  there
• 9:01
  a
• 9:01
  bus
• 9:01
  or
• 9:02
  some
• 9:02
  kind
• 9:02
  of
• 9:02
  unit
• 9:03
  that
• 9:03
  goes
• 9:03
  out
• 9:03
  to
• 9:04
  communities
• 9:05
  Bookmobile?
• 9:06
  You
• 9:06
  may
• 9:06
  see
• 9:07
  several
• 9:07
  of
• 9:07
  our
• 9:07
  vehicles
• 9:08
  out
• 9:08
  there.
• 9:09
  We
• 9:09
  do
• 9:09
  have
• 9:09
  our
• 9:09
  shipping
• 9:10
  department.
• 9:10
  They're
• 9:11
  the
• 9:11
  ones
• 9:11
  moving
• 9:12
  books
• 9:12
  from
• 9:12
  one
• 9:13
  location
• 9:13
  to
• 9:13
  another.
• 9:14
  Let's
• 9:14
  say
• 9:15
  if
• 9:15
  you
• 9:15
  want
• 9:16
  to
• 9:16
  check
• 9:16
  out
• 9:17
  house
• 9:18
  book
• 9:18
  and
• 9:19
  it's
• 9:19
  not
• 9:19
  available
• 9:20
  at
• 9:20
  your
• 9:20
  local
• 9:20
  library,
• 9:21
  you
• 9:21
  can
• 9:21
  request
• 9:21
  it
• 9:22
  via
• 9:22
  catalog
• 9:22
  and
• 9:23
  then
• 9:23
  the
• 9:23
  shipping
• 9:23
  department
• 9:24
  will
• 9:24
  make
• 9:24
  sure
• 9:25
  that
• 9:25
  it
• 9:25
  gets
• 9:25
  to
• 9:25
  the
• 9:26
  location
• 9:26
  where
• 9:26
  it
• 9:26
  is
• 9:26
  checked
• 9:27
  out.
• 9:27
  But
• 9:27
  we
• 9:28
  also
• 9:28
  have
• 9:28
  the
• 9:28
  Street
• 9:29
  Flea
• 9:29
  is
• 9:29
  the
• 9:29
  community
• 9:30
  outreach
• 9:31
  team.
• 9:31
  They
• 9:32
  have
• 9:32
  three
• 9:32
  vehicles.
• 9:33
  They
• 9:33
  are
• 9:33
  named
• 9:34
  based
• 9:34
  on
• 9:34
  their
• 9:35
  colors,
• 9:35
  ginger,
• 9:36
  lime
• 9:37
  and
• 9:37
  raspberry.
• 9:38
  And
• 9:39
  they
• 9:39
  go
• 9:39
  out
• 9:39
  and
• 9:40
  do
• 9:40
  pop
• 9:40
  up
• 9:41
  libraries,
• 9:42
  you
• 9:42
  know,
• 9:42
  in
• 9:43
  community
• 9:43
  spaces
• 9:45
  such
• 9:45
  as
• 9:45
  festivals
• 9:46
  like
• 9:47
  the
• 9:47
  LA
• 9:47
  Times
• 9:47
  Festival
• 9:48
  of
• 9:48
  Books
• 9:48
  that
• 9:49
  you
• 9:49
  know
• 9:49
  that
• 9:49
  we
• 9:49
  were
• 9:49
  there,
• 9:50
  we
• 9:50
  had
• 9:50
  a
• 9:50
  heavy
• 9:50
  presence
• 9:51
  as
• 9:51
  a
• 9:51
  sponsor,
• 9:52
  but
• 9:52
  also
• 9:53
  smaller
• 9:53
  community
• 9:54
  events,
• 9:55
  senior
• 9:55
  centers,
• 9:56
  youth
• 9:57
  centers,
• 9:58
  after
• 9:58
  school
• 9:59
  programs
• 10:00
  and
• 10:01
  hacla,
• 10:02
  you
• 10:02
  know,
• 10:02
  public
• 10:02
  housing
• 10:03
  spaces.
• 10:04
  So
• 10:04
  yes,
• 10:04
  we
• 10:05
  are.
• 10:05
  In
• 10:06
  addition
• 10:06
  to.
• 10:06
  There
• 10:06
  are
• 10:06
  73
• 10:07
  locations
• 10:08
  we
• 10:09
  were
• 10:09
  also
• 10:10
  out
• 10:10
  there
• 10:10
  serving
• 10:11
  the
• 10:11
  community.
• 10:13
  And
• 10:13
  I
• 10:13
  want
• 10:13
  back
• 10:14
  to
• 10:14
  the
• 10:14
  Central
• 10:14
  Library.
• 10:15
  You
• 10:16
  guys
• 10:16
  are
• 10:16
  having
• 10:16
  a,
• 10:17
  a
• 10:17
  big
• 10:17
  festival
• 10:17
  to
• 10:18
  celebrate
• 10:18
  your
• 10:19
  hundred
• 10:19
  years.
• 10:19
  What's
• 10:20
  going
• 10:20
  to
• 10:20
  go
• 10:20
  on
• 10:20
  with
• 10:21
  that
• 10:21
  and
• 10:21
  when
• 10:21
  does
• 10:22
  that
• 10:22
  happen?
• 10:24
  Well,
• 10:24
  our
• 10:25
  fifth
• 10:26
  we
• 10:27
  are
• 10:27
  having
• 10:28
  a
• 10:28
  birthday
• 10:29
  party
• 10:29
  for
• 10:30
  the
• 10:30
  Central
• 10:30
  Library.
• 10:31
  We're
• 10:31
  celebrating
• 10:32
  the
• 10:32
  centennial
• 10:33
  all
• 10:33
  2026.
• 10:34
  You
• 10:35
  know,
• 10:35
  we
• 10:35
  have
• 10:35
  many
• 10:35
  activities.
• 10:36
  Christina
• 10:36
  can
• 10:37
  help
• 10:37
  me
• 10:38
  list
• 10:38
  them
• 10:39
  all.
• 10:39
  But
• 10:40
  July
• 10:40
  11th,
• 10:41
  Central
• 10:42
  Library
• 10:42
  7
• 10:43
  11.
• 10:43
  We
• 10:43
  will
• 10:44
  be
• 10:44
  having
• 10:44
  a
• 10:45
  wonderful
• 10:45
  birthday
• 10:46
  party.
• 10:47
  We'll
• 10:47
  have
• 10:47
  cake,
• 10:47
  we'll
• 10:48
  have
• 10:48
  cupcakes.
• 10:48
  We'll
• 10:49
  have
• 10:49
  music
• 10:50
  performances,
• 10:51
  authors
• 10:52
  tool
• 10:52
  book
• 10:52
  launches.
• 10:54
  We'll
• 10:54
  have
• 10:55
  a
• 10:56
  community
• 10:56
  partners
• 10:57
  joining
• 10:57
  us
• 10:57
  outside
• 10:58
  in
• 10:58
  the
• 10:58
  gardens.
• 10:59
  And
• 10:59
  it'll
• 11:00
  be
• 11:00
  a
• 11:00
  huge
• 11:00
  celebration.
• 11:01
  It
• 11:01
  is
• 11:02
  our
• 11:02
  birthday
• 11:03
  party
• 11:03
  celebrating
• 11:04
  100
• 11:04
  years
• 11:05
  of
• 11:06
  the
• 11:06
  light
• 11:06
  of
• 11:07
  learning.
• 11:08
  You
• 11:08
  know,
• 11:09
  I
• 11:09
  just
• 11:09
  want
• 11:09
  to
• 11:10
  throw
• 11:10
  something
• 11:10
  in
• 11:11
  there
• 11:11
  and
• 11:11
  not
• 11:12
  to
• 11:12
  be
• 11:13
  Donny
• 11:13
  Downer
• 11:14
  here,
• 11:14
  but
• 11:15
  you
• 11:16
  know,
• 11:17
  there's
• 11:17
  been
• 11:17
  news
• 11:18
  that's
• 11:18
  not
• 11:18
  been
• 11:18
  so
• 11:19
  good
• 11:19
  at
• 11:19
  the
• 11:19
  library.
• 11:20
  You
• 11:20
  know,
• 11:21
  we
• 11:21
  went
• 11:21
  through
• 11:21
  a
• 11:21
  terrible
• 11:22
  fire
• 11:23
  that
• 11:23
  I
• 11:23
  remember
• 11:24
  pretty
• 11:24
  well
• 11:25
  at
• 11:25
  the
• 11:25
  Central
• 11:26
  Library.
• 11:27
  And
• 11:27
  it
• 11:28
  was
• 11:28
  pretty
• 11:28
  devastating
• 11:29
  and
• 11:30
  I
• 11:30
  think
• 11:30
  even
• 11:30
  water
• 11:31
  damage
• 11:31
  from
• 11:31
  the
• 11:32
  hoses.
• 11:33
  And
• 11:33
  I
• 11:33
  remember
• 11:34
  there
• 11:34
  was
• 11:34
  a
• 11:35
  company
• 11:35
  that
• 11:36
  came
• 11:36
  in
• 11:37
  and
• 11:37
  just
• 11:37
  dried
• 11:38
  out
• 11:38
  the
• 11:38
  books
• 11:39
  and
• 11:39
  I
• 11:39
  remember
• 11:40
  doing
• 11:40
  stories
• 11:40
  about
• 11:41
  the
• 11:41
  process
• 11:41
  of
• 11:42
  trying
• 11:42
  to
• 11:42
  save
• 11:43
  the
• 11:43
  books.
• 11:44
  And
• 11:44
  this
• 11:45
  was
• 11:45
  pretty
• 11:45
  traumatic
• 11:46
  for
• 11:46
  the
• 11:46
  library.
• 11:47
  But
• 11:47
  what
• 11:47
  was
• 11:47
  it,
• 11:47
  the
• 11:47
  90s?
• 11:49
  The
• 11:49
  fire
• 11:49
  was
• 11:50
  1986.
• 11:51
  So
• 11:51
  there
• 11:51
  were
• 11:51
  1986.
• 11:52
  Yeah,
• 11:52
  there
• 11:52
  were
• 11:53
  two
• 11:53
  fires.
• 11:53
  There
• 11:53
  was
• 11:54
  April
• 11:54
  29,
• 11:55
  1986
• 11:56
  was
• 11:56
  the
• 11:56
  really
• 11:57
  big,
• 11:57
  devastating
• 11:58
  fire
• 11:58
  that
• 11:59
  gets
• 12:00
  talked
• 12:00
  about.
• 12:00
  And
• 12:01
  then
• 12:01
  in
• 12:01
  September,
• 12:02
  we
• 12:02
  had
• 12:02
  a
• 12:02
  second
• 12:03
  fire
• 12:03
  that
• 12:03
  destroyed
• 12:04
  most
• 12:05
  of
• 12:05
  our
• 12:05
  music
• 12:05
  collection.
• 12:06
  Oh,
• 12:08
  wow.
• 12:08
  And
• 12:09
  that
• 12:09
  effort
• 12:10
  to
• 12:10
  dry
• 12:10
  out
• 12:11
  books,
• 12:11
  I.
• 12:11
  I
• 12:11
  don't
• 12:12
  know
• 12:12
  that
• 12:12
  you
• 12:12
  were
• 12:12
  even
• 12:12
  born
• 12:13
  then,
• 12:13
  but,
• 12:13
  you
• 12:14
  know,
• 12:14
  it
• 12:14
  feels
• 12:15
  to
• 12:15
  me
• 12:15
  like
• 12:16
  that
• 12:16
  was.
• 12:16
  That
• 12:17
  was
• 12:17
  the
• 12:17
  first
• 12:17
  time
• 12:17
  I
• 12:18
  ever
• 12:18
  saw
• 12:18
  such
• 12:18
  a
• 12:19
  repair
• 12:19
  effort
• 12:20
  to
• 12:20
  try
• 12:20
  to.
• 12:21
  To
• 12:21
  salvage
• 12:22
  dampened
• 12:23
  and.
• 12:23
  And
• 12:23
  wet
• 12:24
  books
• 12:24
  and
• 12:24
  dry
• 12:24
  them
• 12:24
  out
• 12:25
  and
• 12:25
  try
• 12:25
  to
• 12:25
  save
• 12:26
  them.
• 12:26
  And
• 12:26
  I
• 12:26
  guess
• 12:26
  they.
• 12:27
  If
• 12:27
  I
• 12:27
  remember
• 12:28
  correctly,
• 12:28
  and
• 12:28
  I.
• 12:28
  I
• 12:29
  may
• 12:29
  not
• 12:29
  be
• 12:29
  remembering
• 12:30
  correctly,
• 12:30
  but
• 12:30
  it
• 12:30
  seems
• 12:31
  like
• 12:31
  they
• 12:31
  saved
• 12:31
  a
• 12:31
  lot
• 12:31
  of
• 12:31
  books.
• 12:33
  Yeah,
• 12:33
  we
• 12:33
  did.
• 12:33
  Well,
• 12:34
  you
• 12:34
  know,
• 12:35
  as
• 12:35
  awful
• 12:35
  as
• 12:36
  the
• 12:36
  fire
• 12:36
  was,
• 12:37
  it
• 12:37
  really
• 12:37
  galvanized
• 12:38
  the
• 12:38
  community
• 12:39
  around
• 12:39
  us.
• 12:40
  Volunteers.
• 12:40
  In
• 12:40
  the
• 12:40
  days
• 12:41
  following
• 12:41
  the
• 12:41
  fire,
• 12:42
  hundreds
• 12:42
  upon
• 12:42
  hundreds
• 12:43
  of
• 12:43
  volunteers
• 12:43
  came
• 12:43
  to
• 12:44
  help
• 12:44
  staff
• 12:44
  get
• 12:45
  those
• 12:45
  books
• 12:45
  out
• 12:46
  of
• 12:46
  the
• 12:46
  building.
• 12:46
  They
• 12:47
  had,
• 12:47
  like,
• 12:47
  makeshift
• 12:47
  slides
• 12:48
  and
• 12:49
  were
• 12:49
  just
• 12:49
  putting
• 12:49
  the
• 12:50
  books,
• 12:50
  you
• 12:50
  know,
• 12:51
  down
• 12:51
  the
• 12:51
  slides
• 12:52
  and
• 12:52
  piling
• 12:52
  them
• 12:52
  up.
• 12:53
  And
• 12:53
  they
• 12:53
  ended
• 12:53
  up.
• 12:54
  A
• 12:54
  lot
• 12:54
  of
• 12:54
  them
• 12:54
  went
• 12:54
  out
• 12:55
  to
• 12:55
  the
• 12:55
  Douglas
• 12:56
  facility
• 12:57
  in
• 12:57
  Huntington
• 12:58
  beach
• 12:58
  because
• 12:58
  they
• 12:58
  had
• 12:59
  these
• 12:59
  giant
• 13:00
  chambers,
• 13:01
  and
• 13:01
  that's
• 13:01
  where
• 13:01
  they
• 13:01
  were
• 13:02
  drying
• 13:02
  them
• 13:02
  out,
• 13:02
  were
• 13:03
  in
• 13:03
  this.
• 13:03
  These
• 13:03
  giant
• 13:04
  chambers.
• 13:04
  And
• 13:05
  so
• 13:05
  they
• 13:05
  were
• 13:05
  able
• 13:05
  to
• 13:06
  salvage
• 13:06
  a
• 13:06
  lot
• 13:06
  of
• 13:07
  the
• 13:07
  books,
• 13:07
  many,
• 13:07
  which
• 13:08
  you
• 13:08
  can
• 13:08
  still
• 13:08
  see
• 13:09
  on
• 13:09
  our
• 13:09
  shelves.
• 13:09
  You
• 13:10
  can
• 13:10
  kind
• 13:10
  of
• 13:10
  tell
• 13:10
  which
• 13:11
  ones
• 13:11
  were
• 13:11
  the
• 13:12
  fire
• 13:12
  survivors.
• 13:14
  But,
• 13:14
  yeah,
• 13:14
  it
• 13:14
  was
• 13:15
  just
• 13:16
  a
• 13:16
  massive
• 13:16
  effort.
• 13:17
  We
• 13:17
  have
• 13:17
  photos
• 13:18
  of
• 13:18
  those
• 13:18
  giant
• 13:18
  drying
• 13:19
  chambers.
• 13:19
  If
• 13:19
  you
• 13:20
  go
• 13:20
  to
• 13:20
  our
• 13:21
  website
• 13:21
  and
• 13:22
  go
• 13:22
  to
• 13:22
  our
• 13:22
  digitized
• 13:23
  photo.
• 13:23
  I
• 13:24
  oversee
• 13:24
  our
• 13:24
  photo
• 13:24
  collection,
• 13:25
  so
• 13:25
  I
• 13:25
  need
• 13:25
  to
• 13:25
  promote
• 13:25
  the
• 13:26
  photos.
• 13:27
  So
• 13:27
  we've
• 13:27
  recently
• 13:27
  digitized
• 13:28
  a
• 13:28
  lot
• 13:28
  of
• 13:28
  photos
• 13:29
  that
• 13:29
  show
• 13:29
  that
• 13:29
  drying
• 13:30
  process.
• 13:31
  But
• 13:31
  I
• 13:32
  have
• 13:32
  to
• 13:32
  say,
• 13:33
  as
• 13:33
  awful
• 13:33
  as
• 13:34
  it
• 13:34
  was,
• 13:34
  and
• 13:35
  we
• 13:35
  lost
• 13:35
  around
• 13:35
  400
• 13:36
  and
• 13:36
  I
• 13:36
  think
• 13:37
  around
• 13:37
  450,000
• 13:38
  volumes
• 13:38
  of
• 13:38
  books.
• 13:39
  If
• 13:40
  there
• 13:40
  is
• 13:40
  a
• 13:40
  silver
• 13:40
  lining
• 13:41
  to
• 13:41
  it
• 13:41
  all,
• 13:41
  it
• 13:42
  did
• 13:42
  really
• 13:43
  rally
• 13:43
  the
• 13:43
  community
• 13:44
  behind
• 13:44
  us,
• 13:45
  and
• 13:45
  I
• 13:45
  think
• 13:47
  it
• 13:47
  ensured
• 13:48
  that
• 13:48
  people
• 13:49
  would
• 13:50
  never
• 13:50
  take
• 13:51
  Central
• 13:51
  Library
• 13:51
  for
• 13:52
  granted.
• 13:53
  And
• 13:53
  when
• 13:53
  we
• 13:53
  did
• 13:53
  reopen
• 13:54
  following
• 13:54
  the
• 13:54
  fire
• 13:55
  and
• 13:55
  our
• 13:55
  expansion
• 13:56
  and
• 13:56
  renovation
• 13:56
  in
• 13:57
  October
• 13:57
  3,
• 13:58
  1993,
• 13:59
  25,000
• 13:59
  people
• 14:00
  came
• 14:00
  to
• 14:00
  that
• 14:01
  opening.
• 14:02
  And
• 14:02
  so
• 14:03
  I
• 14:03
  think
• 14:03
  people
• 14:03
  still
• 14:04
  really
• 14:04
  appreciate
• 14:05
  us
• 14:05
  to
• 14:05
  this
• 14:06
  day.
• 14:06
  And
• 14:06
  in
• 14:07
  a
• 14:07
  weird
• 14:07
  way,
• 14:07
  I
• 14:08
  think
• 14:08
  some
• 14:08
  of
• 14:08
  it
• 14:08
  has
• 14:08
  to
• 14:09
  do
• 14:09
  with
• 14:09
  the
• 14:09
  fact
• 14:09
  that
• 14:10
  we
• 14:10
  almost
• 14:11
  lost
• 14:11
  Central
• 14:11
  Library.
• 14:14
  It
• 14:14
  does
• 14:14
  kind
• 14:14
  of
• 14:14
  make
• 14:14
  it
• 14:15
  more
• 14:15
  precious.
• 14:16
  Yeah,
• 14:17
  I
• 14:17
  agree.
• 14:17
  Hunter,
• 14:18
  you
• 14:18
  were
• 14:18
  going
• 14:18
  to
• 14:18
  say
• 14:18
  something
• 14:19
  here.
• 14:20
  I
• 14:20
  just.
• 14:21
  I
• 14:21
  am
• 14:21
  a
• 14:21
  consumer
• 14:22
  of
• 14:22
  all
• 14:22
  kinds
• 14:22
  of
• 14:22
  books.
• 14:23
  I
• 14:23
  listen
• 14:24
  to
• 14:24
  audiobooks,
• 14:25
  I
• 14:25
  read
• 14:26
  ebooks,
• 14:27
  and
• 14:28
  I
• 14:28
  have
• 14:28
  a
• 14:28
  bunch
• 14:29
  of,
• 14:29
  you
• 14:29
  know,
• 14:29
  hard
• 14:30
  stuff
• 14:30
  in
• 14:30
  the
• 14:30
  back.
• 14:30
  But
• 14:31
  when
• 14:32
  you
• 14:32
  go
• 14:32
  to
• 14:32
  a
• 14:32
  library,
• 14:33
  there's
• 14:34
  something
• 14:35
  so
• 14:35
  evocative
• 14:36
  about
• 14:36
  it.
• 14:36
  Just
• 14:37
  opening
• 14:37
  up
• 14:37
  the
• 14:37
  books,
• 14:38
  the
• 14:38
  smell
• 14:39
  of
• 14:39
  the
• 14:39
  books,
• 14:39
  and
• 14:39
  the
• 14:39
  feel
• 14:40
  of
• 14:40
  the
• 14:40
  Books.
• 14:41
  Do
• 14:41
  you
• 14:42
  find
• 14:42
  that
• 14:42
  people
• 14:42
  still
• 14:43
  appreciate
• 14:43
  the
• 14:44
  tactile
• 14:44
  real
• 14:46
  book
• 14:46
  experience
• 14:47
  even
• 14:48
  though
• 14:48
  there's
• 14:48
  so
• 14:48
  many
• 14:48
  other
• 14:49
  options
• 14:49
  these
• 14:49
  days,.
• 14:51
  100%
• 14:52
  people
• 14:52
  still
• 14:53
  want
• 14:53
  physical
• 14:53
  media.
• 14:54
  And
• 14:54
  that
• 14:54
  includes
• 14:54
  young
• 14:55
  people.
• 14:56
  I
• 14:56
  have
• 14:57
  a
• 14:57
  16
• 14:57
  year
• 14:57
  old,
• 14:57
  she's
• 14:58
  almost
• 14:58
  16,
• 14:58
  my
• 14:58
  daughter.
• 14:59
  And
• 14:59
  it's
• 15:00
  a
• 15:00
  balance
• 15:00
  between
• 15:00
  the
• 15:01
  two.
• 15:01
  Like
• 15:01
  there
• 15:01
  are
• 15:01
  certain
• 15:02
  things
• 15:02
  she'll
• 15:03
  read
• 15:03
  on
• 15:03
  her
• 15:03
  Kindle,
• 15:04
  but
• 15:04
  then
• 15:05
  she's
• 15:06
  constantly
• 15:06
  buying
• 15:06
  books
• 15:07
  even
• 15:07
  though
• 15:07
  I
• 15:07
  work
• 15:07
  at
• 15:08
  a
• 15:08
  library.
• 15:09
  And
• 15:09
  I
• 15:09
  can't
• 15:09
  say
• 15:09
  no,
• 15:10
  I'm
• 15:10
  not
• 15:10
  going
• 15:10
  to
• 15:10
  argue
• 15:11
  with
• 15:11
  her
• 15:11
  buying
• 15:11
  books.
• 15:12
  But
• 15:12
  she'll
• 15:12
  also,
• 15:13
  you
• 15:13
  know,
• 15:13
  she'll
• 15:13
  also
• 15:14
  text
• 15:14
  me,
• 15:14
  mom,
• 15:14
  go,
• 15:15
  go
• 15:15
  pick
• 15:15
  up
• 15:15
  this
• 15:15
  book.
• 15:16
  Because,
• 15:16
  you
• 15:16
  know,
• 15:16
  because
• 15:16
  she
• 15:17
  has
• 15:17
  access
• 15:17
  to
• 15:18
  one
• 15:18
  of
• 15:18
  the
• 15:18
  biggest
• 15:18
  public
• 15:19
  libraries.
• 15:19
  So,
• 15:20
  yeah,
• 15:20
  I
• 15:20
  think,
• 15:21
  you
• 15:21
  know,
• 15:22
  as
• 15:22
  wonderful
• 15:22
  as
• 15:23
  technology
• 15:23
  is,
• 15:24
  it's
• 15:24
  not
• 15:24
  an
• 15:24
  all
• 15:24
  or
• 15:25
  nothing.
• 15:25
  And
• 15:25
  I
• 15:25
  think
• 15:26
  too
• 15:26
  often
• 15:26
  people
• 15:27
  are,
• 15:27
  you
• 15:27
  know,
• 15:28
  because
• 15:28
  we
• 15:28
  have
• 15:29
  ebooks
• 15:29
  now,
• 15:30
  why
• 15:30
  do
• 15:30
  we
• 15:30
  need
• 15:30
  print
• 15:31
  books
• 15:31
  anymore?
• 15:31
  And
• 15:31
  that,
• 15:32
  that
• 15:32
  is
• 15:32
  absolutely
• 15:33
  ridiculous.
• 15:33
  You're
• 15:34
  going
• 15:34
  back
• 15:34
  to
• 15:34
  vinyl.
• 15:35
  Vinyl
• 15:35
  has
• 15:35
  made
• 15:35
  a
• 15:36
  comeback.
• 15:36
  So
• 15:36
  I
• 15:37
  think
• 15:37
  the
• 15:37
  world
• 15:37
  is
• 15:38
  big
• 15:38
  enough
• 15:39
  for,
• 15:39
  for
• 15:39
  digital
• 15:39
  and
• 15:40
  analog.
• 15:40
  And
• 15:41
  yes,
• 15:41
  people
• 15:41
  still,
• 15:42
  you
• 15:42
  know,
• 15:42
  come
• 15:42
  into
• 15:43
  the
• 15:43
  library,
• 15:43
  they're
• 15:43
  overwhelmed.
• 15:44
  Central
• 15:45
  Library
• 15:45
  is
• 15:46
  amazing.
• 15:47
  You
• 15:47
  know,
• 15:47
  we
• 15:47
  have
• 15:48
  such
• 15:48
  deep
• 15:48
  collections.
• 15:49
  You
• 15:50
  know,
• 15:50
  we
• 15:50
  started
• 15:51
  collecting
• 15:51
  in
• 15:51
  1872
• 15:52
  when

• 15:53
  Public

• 15:54
  formed.
• 15:55
  So
• 15:55
  we
• 15:55
  have
• 15:55
  deep
• 15:56
  collections.
• 15:56
  We
• 15:57
  have
• 15:57
  all
• 15:57
  of
• 15:57
  these
• 15:57
  specialized
• 15:58
  subject
• 15:58
  departments
• 15:59
  at
• 15:59

• 15:59
  Library
• 16:00
  and
• 16:00
  staff
• 16:01
  that
• 16:01
  know
• 16:01
  how
• 16:02
  to
• 16:02
  help
• 16:02
  you
• 16:02
  find
• 16:03
  whatever
• 16:03
  you're
• 16:03
  looking
• 16:04
  for.
• 16:04
  And
• 16:05
  you
• 16:05
  know
• 16:05
  how
• 16:06
  many
• 16:06
  centuries
• 16:07
  of
• 16:07
  information
• 16:08
  were
• 16:08
  created
• 16:08
  before
• 16:09
  the
• 16:09
  Internet
• 16:09
  came
• 16:10
  around?
• 16:10
  Not
• 16:10
  everything
• 16:11
  is
• 16:11
  online.
• 16:12
  So
• 16:12
  come
• 16:12
  to
• 16:12
  Central
• 16:12
  Library
• 16:13
  and
• 16:13
  let
• 16:14
  us
• 16:14
  help
• 16:14
  you
• 16:14
  find
• 16:15
  what
• 16:15
  you're
• 16:15
  looking
• 16:15
  for.
• 16:16
  I
• 16:16
  remember
• 16:16
  all
• 16:17
  of
• 16:17
  that
• 16:17
  back
• 16:17
  in
• 16:17
  1872.
• 16:22
  So
• 16:23
  Hunter
• 16:24
  told
• 16:24
  me
• 16:24
  before
• 16:25
  we
• 16:25
  did
• 16:25
  this
• 16:25
  that
• 16:26
  was
• 16:26
  I
• 16:26
  going
• 16:26
  to
• 16:26
  waive
• 16:26
  my
• 16:27
  book.
• 16:27
  So
• 16:27
  no,
• 16:28
  I'm
• 16:28
  going
• 16:28
  to
• 16:29
  do
• 16:29
  this.
• 16:29
  You
• 16:29
  are.
• 16:30
  This
• 16:31
  will
• 16:31
  add
• 16:31
  in
• 16:31
  the
• 16:31
  Shameless
• 16:32
  Plug
• 16:33
  graphics
• 16:33
  afterwards.
• 16:34
  And
• 16:34
  post
• 16:35
  is
• 16:36
  that
• 16:36
  there's
• 16:36
  a
• 16:36
  nice
• 16:36
  tactic,
• 16:37
  actual
• 16:37
  thing
• 16:37
  about
• 16:37
  books.
• 16:38
  And
• 16:39
  I'm,
• 16:39
  I'm
• 16:39
  going
• 16:39
  to
• 16:40
  donate
• 16:40
  some
• 16:41
  books
• 16:41
  to
• 16:41
  the
• 16:41
  library
• 16:42
  system
• 16:43
  because
• 16:44
  I
• 16:44
  feel
• 16:44
  like
• 16:44
  there
• 16:45
  are
• 16:45
  people
• 16:45
  that
• 16:45
  even
• 16:45
  though
• 16:46
  this
• 16:46
  is
• 16:46
  not
• 16:46
  very
• 16:46
  expensive,
• 16:47
  it's
• 16:47
  15.99@Amazon.com
• 16:50
  and
• 16:50
  also
• 16:51
  7.99
• 16:51
  for
• 16:52
  the
• 16:52
  digital
• 16:53
  Shameless
• 16:53
  Plug.
• 16:54
  But
• 16:54
  you
• 16:54
  know,
• 16:55
  the
• 16:55
  thing
• 16:55
  is
• 16:56
  just.
• 16:56
  Give
• 16:56
  them
• 16:56
  a
• 16:57
  website.
• 16:59
  Website
• 16:59
  is
• 17:00
  called
• 17:00
  howheiser.com
• 17:01
  you
• 17:01
  can
• 17:01
  find
• 17:01
  out
• 17:01
  all
• 17:02
  about
• 17:02
  the
• 17:02
  book.
• 17:03
  You
• 17:03
  told
• 17:04
  him
• 17:04
  to.
• 17:04
  But
• 17:05
  the
• 17:05
  bot.
• 17:05
  The
• 17:06
  line
• 17:06
  is
• 17:07
  there
• 17:07
  are
• 17:07
  people
• 17:07
  that
• 17:08
  really
• 17:08
  in
• 17:08
  this
• 17:09
  economy
• 17:09
  can't
• 17:10
  afford
• 17:10
  a
• 17:10
  $16
• 17:11
  book.
• 17:12
  And
• 17:12
  I
• 17:12
  recognize
• 17:13
  that
• 17:13
  and
• 17:13
  I
• 17:13
  want
• 17:13
  to
• 17:13
  make
• 17:13
  sure
• 17:14
  that
• 17:14
  this
• 17:14
  book
• 17:15
  is
• 17:15
  available
• 17:15
  in
• 17:15
  the
• 17:16
  libraries
• 17:16
  for
• 17:16
  people
• 17:17
  to
• 17:17
  read
• 17:17
  for
• 17:17
  free.
• 17:18
  And
• 17:18
  so
• 17:19
  we'll
• 17:19
  be
• 17:19
  talking
• 17:19
  about
• 17:19
  that
• 17:20
  after
• 17:20
  we're
• 17:20
  off
• 17:20
  this
• 17:21
  podcast.
• 17:21
  But
• 17:22
  I
• 17:22
  think
• 17:23
  books
• 17:23
  are
• 17:23
  important.
• 17:23
  I
• 17:24
  think
• 17:24
  they
• 17:24
  will
• 17:24
  always
• 17:24
  be
• 17:25
  important.
• 17:25
  I
• 17:26
  think
• 17:26
  you
• 17:26
  can
• 17:26
  digitize
• 17:27
  and
• 17:27
  digitize
• 17:28
  and
• 17:28
  you
• 17:28
  can
• 17:28
  do
• 17:28
  whatever
• 17:28
  you
• 17:29
  want
• 17:29
  to
• 17:29
  do,
• 17:29
  but
• 17:30
  the
• 17:30
  basic
• 17:30
  book
• 17:31
  is
• 17:31
  still
• 17:32
  the
• 17:32
  basic
• 17:32
  book.
• 17:33
  And
• 17:33
  there's
• 17:33
  nothing
• 17:33
  better
• 17:34
  to
• 17:34
  me
• 17:34
  than
• 17:35
  walking
• 17:35
  into
• 17:35
  a
• 17:35
  bookstore
• 17:36
  and
• 17:37
  smelling
• 17:37
  the
• 17:37
  aroma
• 17:38
  of
• 17:38
  the
• 17:38
  books.
• 17:39
  In
• 17:39
  fact,
• 17:39
  if
• 17:39
  they
• 17:40
  had
• 17:40
  a
• 17:40
  book
• 17:40
  cologne,
• 17:41
  I
• 17:41
  would
• 17:41
  probably
• 17:41
  buy
• 17:42
  it.
• 17:43
  That's.
• 17:43
  Hey,
• 17:44
  that's
• 17:44
  an
• 17:45
  idea,
• 17:45
  right?
• 17:45
  That's
• 17:46
  a
• 17:46
  scent
• 17:47
  library
• 17:49
  on
• 17:50
  the
• 17:50
  candle
• 17:50
  scented
• 17:51
  library.
• 17:52
  But
• 17:53
  Madeline
• 17:53
  Christina,
• 17:54
  I'm
• 17:55
  going
• 17:55
  to
• 17:55
  call
• 17:55
  myself
• 17:56
  out
• 17:56
  on
• 17:56
  something
• 17:56
  here
• 17:57
  because,
• 17:58
  um,
• 17:58
  I
• 17:58
  had
• 17:59
  to
• 17:59
  learn.
• 17:59
  But
• 18:00
  I
• 18:00
  remember
• 18:00
  a
• 18:00
  couple
• 18:01
  years
• 18:01
  ago
• 18:01
  my
• 18:01
  daughter
• 18:02
  saying
• 18:02
  to
• 18:02
  me
• 18:03
  that
• 18:03
  she
• 18:03
  was
• 18:04
  very
• 18:04
  interested
• 18:05
  in
• 18:05
  getting
• 18:05
  into
• 18:05
  the
• 18:06
  library
• 18:06
  sciences,
• 18:07
  I
• 18:07
  guess
• 18:08
  you
• 18:08
  would
• 18:08
  call
• 18:08
  it.
• 18:09
  She
• 18:09
  was
• 18:09
  interested
• 18:10
  in
• 18:10
  being
• 18:11
  librarian.
• 18:11
  She's
• 18:12
  like
• 18:13
  a
• 18:13
  repository
• 18:14
  of
• 18:14
  information.
• 18:15
  She
• 18:15
  just
• 18:15
  got
• 18:15
  her
• 18:17
  associate's
• 18:18
  degree.
• 18:19
  She
• 18:19
  just
• 18:19
  graduated.
• 18:20
  Yes.
• 18:20
  And
• 18:21
  in.
• 18:21
  In
• 18:22
  English
• 18:23
  literature,
• 18:23
  just
• 18:23
  like
• 18:24
  mom.
• 18:25
  But,
• 18:26
  you
• 18:27
  know,
• 18:27
  I,
• 18:27
  at
• 18:27
  that
• 18:28
  time,
• 18:28
  I
• 18:28
  kind
• 18:29
  of
• 18:29
  discouraged
• 18:30
  her
• 18:30
  and
• 18:31
  said,
• 18:31
  well,
• 18:31
  I'm
• 18:31
  not
• 18:32
  sure,
• 18:32
  maybe
• 18:32
  you
• 18:32
  should
• 18:33
  do
• 18:33
  some
• 18:33
  more
• 18:33
  research
• 18:34
  on
• 18:34
  the
• 18:34
  future
• 18:35
  of
• 18:35
  libraries
• 18:36
  and
• 18:37
  how
• 18:37
  things
• 18:37
  are
• 18:37
  going
• 18:37
  and
• 18:38
  maybe
• 18:38
  you
• 18:38
  have
• 18:38
  a
• 18:39
  different
• 18:39
  version
• 18:39
  in
• 18:39
  your
• 18:40
  head
• 18:40
  of
• 18:40
  what
• 18:40
  you
• 18:41
  think
• 18:41
  it
• 18:41
  is
• 18:41
  versus
• 18:42
  what
• 18:42
  it
• 18:42
  is
• 18:42
  now.
• 18:43
  And
• 18:43
  I
• 18:44
  remember
• 18:44
  after
• 18:44
  reading
• 18:45
  more
• 18:45
  about
• 18:45
  it,
• 18:45
  I
• 18:46
  came
• 18:46
  back
• 18:46
  to
• 18:46
  her
• 18:47
  after
• 18:48
  a
• 18:48
  month
• 18:48
  or
• 18:48
  two
• 18:48
  and
• 18:48
  apologized
• 18:50
  and
• 18:50
  said,
• 18:50
  I'm
• 18:50
  really
• 18:51
  sorry
• 18:51
  that
• 18:52
  I
• 18:53
  kind
• 18:53
  of
• 18:53
  challenged
• 18:54
  you
• 18:54
  on
• 18:54
  that
• 18:54
  and
• 18:55
  discouraged
• 18:55
  you
• 18:55
  a
• 18:55
  little
• 18:55
  bit
• 18:56
  because
• 18:57
  I
• 18:57
  didn't
• 18:57
  realize
• 18:58
  how
• 18:58
  much
• 18:59
  the
• 18:59
  libraries,
• 19:00
  many
• 19:01
  of
• 19:01
  them,
• 19:01
  have
• 19:01
  kept
• 19:01
  up
• 19:02
  with,
• 19:03
  you
• 19:03
  know,
• 19:04
  technology
• 19:04
  and
• 19:04
  streaming
• 19:05
  and
• 19:06
  the
• 19:06
  needs
• 19:06
  of
• 19:06
  today,
• 19:06
  like
• 19:07
  podcast
• 19:07
  studios
• 19:08
  and
• 19:08
  that
• 19:08
  kind
• 19:08
  of
• 19:08
  thing.
• 19:10
  So
• 19:11
  what
• 19:11
  would
• 19:11
  you
• 19:11
  say
• 19:11
  to
• 19:11
  people
• 19:12
  like
• 19:12
  my
• 19:12
  daughter
• 19:13
  who
• 19:14
  is
• 19:14
  still
• 19:15
  now
• 19:15
  considering
• 19:15
  this?
• 19:16
  I
• 19:16
  deeply
• 19:16
  apologized
• 19:17
  and
• 19:17
  let
• 19:18
  her
• 19:18
  know
• 19:18
  that
• 19:18
  it
• 19:18
  was,
• 19:19
  you
• 19:19
  know,
• 19:19
  my
• 19:19
  ignorance
• 19:20
  and
• 19:21
  my
• 19:21
  fear
• 19:21
  and
• 19:22
  not
• 19:22
  hers,
• 19:23
  and
• 19:23
  that
• 19:23
  she
• 19:24
  should
• 19:24
  always
• 19:24
  go
• 19:24
  for
• 19:24
  something
• 19:25
  that
• 19:25
  she's
• 19:25
  passionate
• 19:26
  about.
• 19:28
  But
• 19:28
  what
• 19:28
  do
• 19:28
  you
• 19:28
  tell
• 19:29
  people
• 19:29
  like
• 19:29
  my
• 19:29
  daughter
• 19:30
  who,
• 19:31
  you
• 19:31
  know,
• 19:31
  is.
• 19:31
  Is
• 19:32
  looking
• 19:32
  to
• 19:32
  get
• 19:33
  into
• 19:33
  a
• 19:33
  career
• 19:34
  in
• 19:35
  library
• 19:36
  sciences?
• 19:38
  For
• 19:39
  us
• 19:39
  as
• 19:39
  public
• 19:40
  librarians,
• 19:41
  it's
• 19:41
  about
• 19:41
  public
• 19:42
  service,
• 19:42
  right?
• 19:43
  You're
• 19:43
  serving
• 19:43
  the
• 19:44
  community.
• 19:45
  And
• 19:45
  it.
• 19:45
  We've
• 19:46
  heard
• 19:46
  our
• 19:46
  library
• 19:46
  director
• 19:47
  say
• 19:47
  many
• 19:47
  times,
• 19:47
  it's
• 19:48
  not
• 19:48
  a
• 19:48
  nice
• 19:48
  to
• 19:49
  have
• 19:49
  service.
• 19:50
  This
• 19:50
  is
• 19:50
  a
• 19:50
  vital
• 19:51
  service.
• 19:51
  This
• 19:52
  is
• 19:52
  probably
• 19:53
  one
• 19:53
  of
• 19:53
  the
• 19:53
  few,
• 19:53
  if
• 19:54
  not
• 19:54
  the
• 19:54
  only
• 19:55
  public
• 19:55
  space.
• 19:56
  You
• 19:56
  don't
• 19:56
  need
• 19:56
  to
• 19:56
  buy
• 19:57
  anything
• 19:58
  to
• 19:58
  use
• 19:58
  and
• 19:59
  access
• 19:59
  the
• 19:59
  space
• 20:00
  and
• 20:00
  the
• 20:00
  resources
• 20:01
  again.
• 20:01
  We
• 20:02
  have
• 20:02
  people
• 20:02
  obtaining
• 20:03
  their
• 20:04
  high
• 20:04
  school
• 20:04
  diploma,
• 20:04
  career
• 20:05
  certificate.
• 20:05
  We
• 20:06
  have
• 20:06
  people
• 20:06
  using
• 20:07
  the
• 20:07
  library
• 20:07
  to
• 20:08
  improve
• 20:08
  their
• 20:09
  skills.
• 20:09
  We
• 20:09
  have
• 20:09
  people
• 20:10
  learn
• 20:10
  how
• 20:11
  to
• 20:11
  read
• 20:11
  and
• 20:11
  write
• 20:11
  and
• 20:12
  you
• 20:12
  are
• 20:12
  improving
• 20:13
  their
• 20:13
  skills.
• 20:13
  And
• 20:13
  you
• 20:14
  may
• 20:14
  say,
• 20:14
  well,
• 20:14
  that's
• 20:15
  how.
• 20:15
  How
• 20:16
  is
• 20:16
  that
• 20:16
  happening
• 20:16
  in
• 20:17
  2026
• 20:18
  in
• 20:18
  Los
• 20:19
  Angeles?
• 20:19
  And
• 20:19
  yes,
• 20:21
  happens.
• 20:21
  There
• 20:21
  are
• 20:21
  a
• 20:21
  lot.
• 20:22
  There's
• 20:22
  a
• 20:22
  lot
• 20:22
  of
• 20:22
  need.
• 20:23
  We
• 20:23
  have
• 20:23
  parents,
• 20:24
  you
• 20:24
  know,
• 20:25
  discovering
• 20:25
  the
• 20:25
  joy
• 20:26
  of
• 20:26
  reading
• 20:27
  and
• 20:27
  community
• 20:28
  in
• 20:29
  the
• 20:29
  library
• 20:29
  as
• 20:29
  well.
• 20:30
  So
• 20:31
  public
• 20:31
  librarianship,
• 20:32
  I
• 20:32
  think
• 20:33
  it's
• 20:33
  a
• 20:33
  needed
• 20:35
  space.
• 20:36
  I'm
• 20:36
  glad
• 20:36
  your
• 20:37
  daughter
• 20:37
  was
• 20:37
  showing
• 20:37
  interest
• 20:39
  in
• 20:39
  that.
• 20:39
  And
• 20:39
  also
• 20:40
  being
• 20:40
  a
• 20:40
  librarian
• 20:41
  or
• 20:41
  information
• 20:42
  science
• 20:43
  professional,
• 20:43
  it's
• 20:43
  also
• 20:44
  more
• 20:44
  than
• 20:45
  the
• 20:45
  public
• 20:45
  library.
• 20:46
  So
• 20:46
  there's
• 20:46
  academic
• 20:47
  libraries,
• 20:47
  there
• 20:47
  are
• 20:48
  special
• 20:48
  collections,
• 20:48
  and
• 20:49
  there
• 20:49
  are
• 20:49
  archivists,
• 20:51
  companies
• 20:51
  that
• 20:52
  manage
• 20:52
  large
• 20:53
  digital
• 20:54
  assets.
• 20:54
  They
• 20:55
  need
• 20:55
  information
• 20:56
  professionals
• 20:56
  to
• 20:56
  organize
• 20:57
  information,
• 20:58
  to
• 20:59
  work
• 20:59
  with
• 20:59
  systems
• 21:00
  to
• 21:00
  retrieve
• 21:01
  that
• 21:01
  information
• 21:01
  and
• 21:02
  classify
• 21:02
  it.
• 21:03
  So
• 21:03
  there's
• 21:03
  a
• 21:04
  wide
• 21:05
  range
• 21:05
  of
• 21:06
  jobs
• 21:07
  that
• 21:07
  are
• 21:07
  related
• 21:08
  to,
• 21:09
  for
• 21:09
  you
• 21:09
  having,
• 21:10
  like,
• 21:11
  master's
• 21:11
  in
• 21:11
  library
• 21:12
  information
• 21:12
  science
• 21:13
  or
• 21:13
  similar.
• 21:14
  So
• 21:15
  I
• 21:15
  believe
• 21:16
  there
• 21:16
  are
• 21:16
  a
• 21:16
  lot
• 21:16
  of
• 21:16
  opportunities
• 21:18
  out
• 21:18
  there.
• 21:18
  My
• 21:19
  daughter
• 21:19
  is
• 21:19
  in
• 21:19
  college
• 21:20
  now,
• 21:20
  and
• 21:20
  she's
• 21:21
  working
• 21:21
  at
• 21:21
  the
• 21:21
  library.
• 21:23
  She's
• 21:24
  going
• 21:24
  into
• 21:24
  the
• 21:24
  science,
• 21:25
  but
• 21:25
  now
• 21:25
  she's
• 21:26
  helping
• 21:27
  with
• 21:27
  conservation
• 21:28
  at
• 21:28
  her
• 21:28
  university
• 21:29
  library.
• 21:29
  And
• 21:30
  she.
• 21:30
  She's
• 21:30
  discovered
• 21:31
  that
• 21:31
  she
• 21:31
  loves
• 21:32
  it.
• 21:32
  So.
• 21:33
  Yeah.
• 21:34
  So
• 21:34
  I
• 21:34
  think.
• 21:34
  Great.
• 21:35
  Oh,
• 21:35
  no,
• 21:35
  I
• 21:35
  love
• 21:35
  it.
• 21:35
  I
• 21:36
  love
• 21:36
  to
• 21:36
  hear
• 21:36
  that.
• 21:37
  I'm
• 21:37
  gonna
• 21:37
  have
• 21:37
  my
• 21:37
  daughter
• 21:38
  send
• 21:38
  in
• 21:38
  her.
• 21:39
  Her
• 21:39
  application,
• 21:39
  by
• 21:39
  the
• 21:40
  way,
• 21:40
  to
• 21:40
  you,
• 21:40
  too.
• 21:41
  Yeah.
• 21:41
  I
• 21:42
  was
• 21:42
  mentioning
• 21:42
  before
• 21:42
  we
• 21:43
  started
• 21:43
  talking
• 21:43
  that
• 21:44
  my
• 21:44
  mother
• 21:45
  studied
• 21:46
  library
• 21:46
  sense
• 21:47
  serv.
• 21:48
  Library
• 21:48
  sciences,
• 21:49
  rather,
• 21:49
  at
• 21:50
  Texas
• 21:50
  Women's
• 21:51
  University
• 21:51
  in
• 21:51
  Denton,
• 21:52
  Texas,
• 21:52
  and
• 21:53
  was
• 21:53
  a
• 21:53
  librarian
• 21:55
  at
• 21:55
  the
• 21:56
  El
• 21:56
  Centro
• 21:56
  College
• 21:57
  in
• 21:57
  downtown
• 21:59
  Dallas
• 22:00
  and
• 22:00
  really
• 22:01
  had
• 22:01
  a
• 22:01
  nice
• 22:02
  little
• 22:02
  career
• 22:02
  with
• 22:02
  library
• 22:03
  sciences.
• 22:04
  So,
• 22:04
  you
• 22:05
  know,
• 22:05
  I'm
• 22:05
  glad
• 22:05
  to
• 22:05
  hear
• 22:06
  that
• 22:06
  there
• 22:06
  is
• 22:06
  still
• 22:07
  a
• 22:07
  love
• 22:07
  of
• 22:07
  that,
• 22:07
  and
• 22:08
  I'm
• 22:08
  glad
• 22:08
  to
• 22:08
  hear
• 22:08
  that,
• 22:10
  you
• 22:10
  know,
• 22:11
  your
• 22:11
  daughter
• 22:12
  Bella
• 22:12
  is
• 22:13
  interested
• 22:13
  in
• 22:13
  that.
• 22:13
  I
• 22:14
  think
• 22:14
  that,
• 22:15
  you
• 22:15
  know,
• 22:15
  there's
• 22:15
  probably
• 22:16
  a
• 22:16
  lot
• 22:16
  of
• 22:16
  great
• 22:16
  opportunities
• 22:17
  in
• 22:17
  the
• 22:17
  library
• 22:18
  system
• 22:18
  and.
• 22:19
  And
• 22:19
  hopefully
• 22:19
  many
• 22:20
  more
• 22:20
  as
• 22:20
  you
• 22:21
  continue
• 22:21
  to
• 22:21
  expand
• 22:22
  out
• 22:22
  into
• 22:23
  all
• 22:23
  the
• 22:23
  different
• 22:24
  things
• 22:24
  that
• 22:24
  come
• 22:24
  along.
• 22:25
  I'm
• 22:26
  guessing
• 22:26
  at
• 22:26
  some
• 22:26
  point,
• 22:27
  you
• 22:27
  know,
• 22:27
  we're
• 22:28
  going
• 22:28
  to
• 22:28
  have
• 22:28
  holograms.
• 22:33
  If
• 22:34
  it
• 22:34
  were
• 22:34
  up
• 22:34
  to
• 22:34
  you,
• 22:34
  everyone
• 22:35
  would
• 22:35
  have
• 22:35
  a
• 22:35
  hologram
• 22:36
  and
• 22:36
  your
• 22:37
  book.
• 22:38
  The
• 22:38
  book
• 22:38
  is
• 22:38
  available
• 22:39
  at
• 22:41
  An
• 22:41
  Accidental
• 22:42
  Career
• 22:42
  and
• 22:42
  with.
• 22:43
  If
• 22:43
  I
• 22:43
  get
• 22:44
  approved,
• 22:44
  it'll
• 22:44
  be
• 22:44
  at
• 22:44
  the
• 22:45
  library.
• 22:45
  So
• 22:46
  I
• 22:46
  just
• 22:46
  want
• 22:46
  to
• 22:47
  circle
• 22:47
  back
• 22:47
  to
• 22:47
  the
• 22:47
  centennial
• 22:48
  thing
• 22:49
  because
• 22:49
  I
• 22:50
  heard
• 22:50
  that
• 22:51
  as
• 22:51
  part
• 22:51
  of
• 22:51
  the
• 22:52
  celebration,
• 22:53
  you
• 22:53
  guys
• 22:54
  opened
• 22:54
  100-year-old
• 22:55
  time
• 22:56
  capsule,
• 22:57
  which
• 22:57
  must
• 22:58
  have
• 22:58
  been
• 22:58
  quite
• 22:59
  an
• 22:59
  eye
• 22:59
  opener.
• 23:00
  Tell
• 23:00
  us
• 23:00
  a
• 23:01
  little
• 23:01
  bit
• 23:01
  about
• 23:01
  what
• 23:01
  was
• 23:01
  inside
• 23:02
  there
• 23:03
  and
• 23:03
  what
• 23:04
  enlightenment
• 23:05
  it
• 23:05
  brought
• 23:05
  about.
• 23:05
  You
• 23:06
  know,
• 23:06
  what
• 23:07
  LA
• 23:07
  was
• 23:07
  like
• 23:07
  100
• 23:08
  years
• 23:08
  ago.
• 23:09
  Besides
• 23:09
  the
• 23:09
  picture
• 23:10
  of
• 23:10
  me
• 23:10
  as
• 23:10
  a
• 23:10
  little
• 23:10
  boy.
• 23:13
  Yeah,
• 23:14
  the
• 23:15
  time
• 23:15
  capsule.
• 23:16
  Retrieving
• 23:16
  that
• 23:16
  was
• 23:17
  an
• 23:17
  absolute
• 23:18
  Odyssey.
• 23:19
  It
• 23:19
  was
• 23:19
  placed
• 23:20
  on
• 23:20
  May
• 23:21
  3,
• 23:22
  1925,
• 23:23
  inside
• 23:24
  our
• 23:24
  cornerstone.
• 23:25
  So
• 23:25
  the
• 23:25
  cornerstone,
• 23:26
  which
• 23:27
  is
• 23:27
  on
• 23:27
  Fifth
• 23:27
  street,
• 23:28
  which
• 23:28
  is
• 23:28
  right
• 23:28
  outside
• 23:28
  the
• 23:29
  end
• 23:29
  entrance,
• 23:29
  they
• 23:30
  actually
• 23:30
  built
• 23:30
  a
• 23:30
  cavity
• 23:31
  in
• 23:31
  it
• 23:32
  so
• 23:32
  that
• 23:32
  it
• 23:32
  was
• 23:32
  placed
• 23:33
  over
• 23:33
  the
• 23:34
  time
• 23:34
  capsule.
• 23:35
  And
• 23:36
  time
• 23:36
  capsules
• 23:37
  at
• 23:37
  that
• 23:37
  time
• 23:37
  were
• 23:38
  incredibly
• 23:38
  common
• 23:38
  for
• 23:39
  new
• 23:39
  buildings.
• 23:40
  But
• 23:40
  usually
• 23:42
  they
• 23:42
  were
• 23:42
  designed
• 23:42
  to
• 23:43
  be
• 23:43
  retrieved
• 23:43
  when
• 23:43
  the
• 23:44
  building
• 23:44
  was
• 23:44
  demolished.
• 23:45
  So
• 23:45
  when
• 23:45
  we
• 23:45
  actually
• 23:46
  demolished
• 23:47
  the
• 23:47
  1881
• 23:48
  State
• 23:48
  Normal
• 23:49
  School
• 23:49
  that
• 23:49
  was
• 23:49
  on
• 23:50
  our
• 23:50
  site,
• 23:50
  we
• 23:51
  retrieved
• 23:51
  that
• 23:51
  time
• 23:52
  capsule
• 23:52
  at
• 23:52
  that
• 23:52
  time.
• 23:54
  So
• 23:55
  we
• 23:55
  now
• 23:55
  determined
• 23:56
  that
• 23:56
  we're
• 23:56
  not
• 23:56
  going
• 23:56
  to
• 23:56
  demolish
• 23:57
  Central
• 23:57
  Library.
• 23:58
  It
• 23:58
  was
• 23:58
  under
• 23:59
  threat
• 23:59
  of
• 23:59
  demolition
• 24:00
  in
• 24:00
  the
• 24:00
  60s
• 24:00
  and
• 24:01
  70s,
• 24:01
  but
• 24:01
  now
• 24:02
  we
• 24:02
  feel
• 24:02
  like
• 24:02
  it's
• 24:02
  here
• 24:02
  to
• 24:03
  stay.
• 24:03
  So
• 24:03
  we
• 24:03
  felt
• 24:03
  that
• 24:04
  the
• 24:04
  centennial
• 24:04
  was
• 24:04
  a
• 24:05
  great
• 24:05
  time
• 24:05
  to
• 24:05
  do
• 24:06
  this.
• 24:06
  But
• 24:07
  because
• 24:07
  it
• 24:07
  wasn't
• 24:08
  designed
• 24:08
  to
• 24:08
  be
• 24:08
  retrieved,
• 24:09
  there
• 24:09
  was
• 24:09
  no
• 24:10
  roadmap.
• 24:11
  And
• 24:11
  so
• 24:11
  Todd
• 24:12
  LaRue,
• 24:12
  who's
• 24:13
  the
• 24:13
  director
• 24:13
  of
• 24:14
  special
• 24:14
  projects
• 24:15
  with
• 24:15
  our
• 24:15
  library
• 24:16
  foundation,
• 24:17
  I
• 24:17
  worked
• 24:17
  with
• 24:17
  him,
• 24:18
  he
• 24:18
  took
• 24:18
  the
• 24:18
  lead
• 24:18
  on
• 24:19
  that.
• 24:19
  And
• 24:19
  it
• 24:19
  was
• 24:19
  months
• 24:20
  upon
• 24:20
  months
• 24:21
  upon
• 24:21
  months
• 24:21
  of
• 24:22
  just
• 24:22
  trying
• 24:22
  to
• 24:22
  figure
• 24:23
  out
• 24:23
  if
• 24:23
  we
• 24:23
  could
• 24:23
  do
• 24:24
  do
• 24:24
  it.
• 24:24
  Finally,
• 24:25
  we
• 24:25
  decided
• 24:26
  we
• 24:26
  didn't
• 24:26
  want
• 24:26
  to
• 24:27
  go
• 24:27
  through
• 24:27
  the
• 24:27
  front
• 24:27
  of
• 24:27
  the
• 24:28
  building.
• 24:28
  We're
• 24:28
  a
• 24:28
  historic
• 24:29
  building.
• 24:29
  We
• 24:29
  didn't
• 24:29
  want
• 24:29
  to
• 24:30
  ruin
• 24:30
  our
• 24:30
  100-year-old
• 24:31
  cornerstone.
• 24:32
  So
• 24:33
  we
• 24:33
  thought.
• 24:33
  We
• 24:33
  determined
• 24:34
  it
• 24:34
  was
• 24:34
  safe
• 24:35
  to
• 24:35
  go
• 24:35
  through
• 24:35
  the
• 24:36
  inside
• 24:36
  of
• 24:36
  the
• 24:36
  building.
• 24:38
  But
• 24:38
  that
• 24:38
  happens
• 24:39
  to
• 24:39
  be
• 24:39
  the
• 24:39
  public
• 24:39
  men's
• 24:40
  restroom.
• 24:42
  So
• 24:42
  I
• 24:42
  had
• 24:42
  to
• 24:43
  spend
• 24:43
  a
• 24:43
  lot
• 24:43
  of
• 24:43
  time
• 24:44
  in
• 24:44
  that
• 24:44
  restroom.
• 24:44
  We're
• 24:44
  just
• 24:44
  getting
• 24:45
  a
• 24:45
  time
• 24:45
  capsule.
• 24:46
  Yeah,
• 24:46
  that's
• 24:46
  all
• 24:46
  we're
• 24:47
  doing.
• 24:47
  So,
• 24:48
  yeah,
• 24:48
  so
• 24:48
  we
• 24:49
  had
• 24:49
  to
• 24:49
  get
• 24:49
  all
• 24:49
  these
• 24:50
  approvals
• 24:50
  with
• 24:51
  other
• 24:51
  city
• 24:51
  departments.
• 24:52
  And
• 24:52
  then
• 24:52
  we
• 24:53
  had
• 24:53
  to
• 24:53
  remove
• 24:53
  urinals
• 24:54
  and
• 24:54
  historic
• 24:55
  marble.
• 24:56
  And
• 24:56
  so
• 24:56
  we
• 24:56
  were
• 24:57
  finally
• 24:57
  able
• 24:57
  to
• 24:58
  retrieve
• 24:58
  it
• 24:59
  because
• 25:00
  it
• 25:00
  was,
• 25:00
  you
• 25:00
  know,
• 25:00
  in
• 25:00
  this
• 25:01
  wall.
• 25:01
  It
• 25:02
  was,
• 25:02
  you
• 25:02
  know,
• 25:02
  above
• 25:03
  ground.
• 25:03
  The
• 25:04
  contents
• 25:05
  were
• 25:05
  pristine.
• 25:06
  It
• 25:06
  was
• 25:06
  like,
• 25:06
  there,
• 25:07
  because,
• 25:07
  you
• 25:07
  know,
• 25:08
  the
• 25:08
  big
• 25:08
  thing
• 25:08
  that
• 25:09
  I
• 25:09
  think
• 25:09
  the
• 25:09
  time
• 25:09
  capsule
• 25:10
  showed
• 25:10
  is
• 25:10
  how
• 25:11
  many
• 25:11
  newspapers
• 25:12
  we
• 25:12
  used
• 25:12
  to
• 25:12
  have
• 25:12
  in
• 25:13
  Los
• 25:13
  Angeles.
• 25:13
  We
• 25:13
  had
• 25:14
  so
• 25:14
  many
• 25:14
  daily
• 25:14
  newspapers.
• 25:15
  There
• 25:15
  were
• 25:16
  copies
• 25:16
  of
• 25:16
  all
• 25:16
  of
• 25:16
  them,
• 25:17
  and
• 25:17
  it
• 25:18
  was
• 25:18
  like
• 25:18
  they
• 25:18
  had
• 25:18
  just
• 25:18
  been
• 25:19
  laid
• 25:19
  in
• 25:19
  there.
• 25:20
  There
• 25:20
  was
• 25:20
  a
• 25:20
  lot
• 25:20
  of.
• 25:21
  A
• 25:21
  lot
• 25:22
  of
• 25:22
  municipal
• 25:23
  reports
• 25:23
  from
• 25:23
  other
• 25:24
  city
• 25:24
  departments.
• 25:25
  And
• 25:25
  it
• 25:25
  just
• 25:25
  shows,
• 25:26
  you
• 25:26
  know,
• 25:26
  just
• 25:26
  a
• 25:26
  very
• 25:27
  civic
• 25:27
  oriented
• 25:28
  look
• 25:28
  at
• 25:28
  the
• 25:29
  city.
• 25:30
  There
• 25:30
  were
• 25:30
  photos
• 25:31
  of
• 25:31
  our
• 25:31
  previous
• 25:32
  locations
• 25:33
  because
• 25:33
  between
• 25:34
  1872,
• 25:35
  when
• 25:35
  we
• 25:35
  were
• 25:36
  founded
• 25:36
  in
• 25:36
  1926,
• 25:37
  we
• 25:38
  had
• 25:38
  five
• 25:38
  different
• 25:39
  locations
• 25:39
  downtown
• 25:40
  where
• 25:40
  our
• 25:40
  central
• 25:40
  collection
• 25:41
  moved
• 25:42
  from.
• 25:42
  We
• 25:42
  kept
• 25:42
  having
• 25:42
  to
• 25:42
  lease
• 25:43
  spaces
• 25:43
  and
• 25:43
  find
• 25:44
  bigger
• 25:44
  and
• 25:44
  bigger
• 25:44
  spaces.
• 25:45
  So
• 25:45
  there
• 25:45
  were
• 25:46
  photos
• 25:46
  of
• 25:46
  all
• 25:46
  of
• 25:46
  them.
• 25:47
  One
• 25:47
  of
• 25:47
  them
• 25:47
  we
• 25:47
  didn't
• 25:48
  have.
• 25:48
  I
• 25:48
  was
• 25:49
  very.
• 25:49
  That
• 25:49
  was
• 25:49
  probably
• 25:49
  my
• 25:50
  most
• 25:50
  exciting
• 25:50
  thing
• 25:51
  was
• 25:51
  to
• 25:51
  have,
• 25:51
  like,
• 25:51
  One
• 25:52
  photo
• 25:52
  that
• 25:52
  we
• 25:52
  didn't
• 25:53
  have,
• 25:53
  photos
• 25:54
  of
• 25:54
  our
• 25:54
  Board
• 25:54
  of
• 25:54
  Library
• 25:55
  commissioners.
• 25:56
  So,
• 25:57
  again,
• 25:57
  like,
• 25:57
  very,
• 25:57
  very
• 25:58
  municipal
• 25:58
  oriented.
• 25:59
  The
• 25:59
  big,
• 26:00
  big
• 26:00
  surprise,
• 26:01
  though.
• 26:01
  So
• 26:01
  we
• 26:02
  had
• 26:02
  a
• 26:02
  list
• 26:02
  in
• 26:02
  our
• 26:03
  Board
• 26:03
  of
• 26:03
  Library
• 26:03
  commissioner
• 26:04
  minutes
• 26:04
  of
• 26:04
  what
• 26:04
  they
• 26:05
  had
• 26:05
  placed,
• 26:05
  so
• 26:05
  we
• 26:06
  knew
• 26:06
  what
• 26:06
  to
• 26:06
  expect.
• 26:07
  But
• 26:07
  there
• 26:07
  was
• 26:07
  just
• 26:08
  a
• 26:08
  reference
• 26:09
  to
• 26:09
  objects
• 26:10
  from
• 26:10
  that
• 26:11
  previous
• 26:11
  1881
• 26:12
  time
• 26:12
  capsule.
• 26:13
  So
• 26:13
  we
• 26:13
  thought,
• 26:13
  okay,
• 26:14
  maybe
• 26:14
  there
• 26:14
  are
• 26:14
  a
• 26:14
  couple
• 26:15
  of
• 26:15
  items
• 26:16
  they
• 26:16
  actually
• 26:17
  sealed
• 26:17
  up
• 26:17
  and
• 26:17
  just
• 26:18
  put
• 26:18
  the
• 26:18
  entire
• 26:19
  1881
• 26:20
  time
• 26:20
  capsule
• 26:21
  in
• 26:21
  ours
• 26:22
  because
• 26:22
  it
• 26:22
  was
• 26:22
  a
• 26:22
  much
• 26:22
  smaller
• 26:23
  box.
• 26:24
  And
• 26:24
  so
• 26:24
  we
• 26:24
  were
• 26:25
  able
• 26:25
  to
• 26:25
  open
• 26:25
  up
• 26:26
  that
• 26:26
  1881
• 26:27
  time
• 26:27
  capsule.
• 26:29
  And
• 26:29
  again,
• 26:29
  so
• 26:29
  you
• 26:30
  got
• 26:30
  a
• 26:30
  slice
• 26:30
  of
• 26:30
  life
• 26:31
  of
• 26:31
  Los
• 26:31
  Angeles
• 26:32
  in
• 26:32
  1881.
• 26:33
  And
• 26:33
  it
• 26:33
  turns
• 26:33
  out
• 26:34
  a
• 26:34
  local
• 26:34
  businessman
• 26:35
  had
• 26:35
  gone
• 26:35
  to
• 26:36
  President
• 26:36
  Garfield's
• 26:37
  funeral
• 26:37
  after
• 26:38
  he
• 26:38
  was
• 26:38
  assassinated
• 26:39
  and
• 26:39
  brought
• 26:39
  back
• 26:40
  some
• 26:40
  relics
• 26:42
  from
• 26:42
  the
• 26:42
  funeral
• 26:42
  and
• 26:43
  put
• 26:43
  those
• 26:43
  in
• 26:43
  the
• 26:43
  time
• 26:44
  capsule.
• 26:44
  Wow.
• 26:45
  And
• 26:45
  so
• 26:46
  we
• 26:46
  currently
• 26:46
  have.
• 26:47
  Many
• 26:47
  of
• 26:47
  the
• 26:47
  objects
• 26:48
  are
• 26:48
  on
• 26:48
  display,
• 26:49
  display
• 26:49
  at
• 26:49
  Central
• 26:49
  Library
• 26:50
  on
• 26:50
  our
• 26:50
  third
• 26:50
  floor
• 26:51
  outside
• 26:51
  the
• 26:51
  literature
• 26:52
  and
• 26:52
  fiction
• 26:52
  department,
• 26:53
  along
• 26:54
  with
• 26:54
  the
• 26:54
  box.
• 26:54
  I
• 26:54
  think
• 26:54
  the
• 26:55
  boxes
• 26:55
  themselves
• 26:56
  are
• 26:56
  impressive.
• 26:56
  Both
• 26:57
  time
• 26:57
  capsule
• 26:57
  boxes
• 26:58
  are
• 26:58
  these
• 26:58
  beautiful
• 26:59
  copper
• 26:59
  boxes
• 27:00
  that
• 27:00
  they
• 27:01
  had
• 27:01
  had
• 27:01
  to
• 27:01
  solder
• 27:02
  shut.
• 27:03
  And
• 27:03
  we
• 27:03
  do
• 27:03
  have
• 27:04
  plans
• 27:04
  to
• 27:05
  put
• 27:05
  some
• 27:05
  of
• 27:05
  the
• 27:06
  objects
• 27:06
  back
• 27:06
  in.
• 27:06
  I
• 27:07
  think
• 27:07
  we'll
• 27:07
  keep
• 27:07
  some
• 27:07
  of
• 27:07
  them
• 27:08
  back
• 27:08
  for
• 27:08
  us.
• 27:08
  But
• 27:09
  we
• 27:09
  are
• 27:09
  going
• 27:09
  to
• 27:10
  be
• 27:10
  figuring
• 27:11
  out
• 27:12
  what
• 27:12
  we
• 27:12
  want
• 27:12
  to
• 27:13
  put
• 27:13
  in
• 27:13
  the
• 27:13
  time
• 27:14
  capsule
• 27:14
  that
• 27:14
  represents
• 27:15
  the
• 27:15
  Los
• 27:15
  Angeles
• 27:16
  public
• 27:16
  library
• 27:17
  in
• 27:17
  2026.
• 27:17
  And
• 27:18
  it's
• 27:18
  going
• 27:18
  to
• 27:18
  go
• 27:18
  back
• 27:18
  in
• 27:19
  the
• 27:19
  bathroom.
• 27:20
  Maybe
• 27:20
  that's.
• 27:21
  Hey,
• 27:21
  you
• 27:21
  know,
• 27:22
  that
• 27:22
  might
• 27:22
  be
• 27:22
  a
• 27:22
  good
• 27:22
  opportunity
• 27:23
  for
• 27:23
  engagement
• 27:24
  from
• 27:24
  the
• 27:24
  public
• 27:25
  to
• 27:25
  say,
• 27:25
  what
• 27:25
  do
• 27:26
  you
• 27:26
  think
• 27:26
  should
• 27:26
  go
• 27:26
  in
• 27:27
  the
• 27:27
  time
• 27:27
  capsule?
• 27:27
  Yeah,
• 27:28
  maybe,
• 27:29
  you
• 27:29
  know,
• 27:30
  that
• 27:30
  we
• 27:30
  bring
• 27:30
  more
• 27:30
  awareness
• 27:31
  to
• 27:31
  the
• 27:31
  library.
• 27:33
  No,
• 27:34
  no,.
• 27:36
  Yeah,
• 27:36
  I
• 27:36
  think.
• 27:37
  Quick
• 27:38
  question,
• 27:38
  no
• 27:39
  pressure,
• 27:39
  but
• 27:39
  you
• 27:40
  said
• 27:40
  there
• 27:40
  was
• 27:40
  a
• 27:40
  bunch
• 27:41
  of
• 27:41
  newspapers
• 27:41
  from
• 27:42
  a
• 27:42
  hundred
• 27:42
  years
• 27:42
  ago.
• 27:43
  Yeah.
• 27:43
  Do
• 27:44
  you
• 27:44
  remember,
• 27:44
  like,
• 27:45
  any
• 27:45
  one
• 27:46
  big
• 27:46
  headline
• 27:47
  from
• 27:47
  when
• 27:47
  it
• 27:47
  went
• 27:48
  in
• 27:48
  100
• 27:48
  years
• 27:48
  ago?
• 27:49
  Oh,
• 27:49
  gosh,
• 27:50
  I.
• 27:50
  You
• 27:50
  know
• 27:50
  what?
• 27:50
  I
• 27:50
  don't,
• 27:51
  I
• 27:51
  don't
• 27:51
  know
• 27:51
  if
• 27:52
  it
• 27:52
  was
• 27:52
  like
• 27:52
  a
• 27:52
  super
• 27:52
  newsworthy
• 27:53
  day,
• 27:54
  but
• 27:54
  we
• 27:54
  do
• 27:54
  have
• 27:54
  some
• 27:54
  of
• 27:55
  those
• 27:55
  newspapers
• 27:55
  on
• 27:56
  display.
• 27:57
  We'll
• 27:57
  have
• 27:57
  to
• 27:57
  look.
• 27:58
  Yeah,
• 27:58
  yeah,
• 27:59
  that's
• 27:59
  pretty
• 27:59
  cool.
• 28:00
  You
• 28:00
  know,
• 28:01
  obviously
• 28:01
  media's
• 28:02
  change
• 28:02
  over
• 28:02
  the
• 28:03
  years
• 28:03
  and,
• 28:04
  you
• 28:04
  know,
• 28:04
  I
• 28:05
  guess
• 28:05
  you
• 28:05
  could
• 28:05
  be
• 28:06
  putting
• 28:06
  in
• 28:06
  some,
• 28:07
  some
• 28:07
  CDs
• 28:08
  or
• 28:08
  some
• 28:09
  thumb
• 28:09
  drives
• 28:09
  or
• 28:10
  some
• 28:10
  digital
• 28:10
  of,
• 28:11
  you
• 28:11
  know,
• 28:12
  Fox
• 28:12
  11
• 28:13
  News
• 28:13
  where
• 28:13
  I
• 28:13
  worked,
• 28:14
  or,
• 28:14
  you
• 28:14
  know,
• 28:15
  CBS
• 28:15
  where
• 28:16
  Elsa
• 28:16
  worked.
• 28:17
  Or,
• 28:17
  you
• 28:17
  know,
• 28:18
  maybe
• 28:19
  you
• 28:19
  can
• 28:19
  put
• 28:19
  our
• 28:19
  show
• 28:19
  Fox
• 28:20
  Lewis
• 28:20
  in
• 28:20
  Depth
• 28:20
  that
• 28:21
  Hunter
• 28:21
  and
• 28:21
  I
• 28:21
  worked
• 28:21
  on
• 28:22
  together.
• 28:23
  I
• 28:23
  mean,
• 28:23
  there
• 28:23
  are
• 28:23
  lots
• 28:23
  of
• 28:23
  opportunities
• 28:24
  here.
• 28:25
  This
• 28:25
  particular
• 28:26
  podcast
• 28:26
  with
• 28:27
  you
• 28:27
  ladies
• 28:28
  in
• 28:28
  there.
• 28:29
  Yeah,
• 28:31
  yeah,
• 28:31
  sure.
• 28:32
  Yeah,
• 28:32
  yeah.
• 28:33
  We,
• 28:33
  we
• 28:34
  will
• 28:34
  definitely
• 28:34
  have
• 28:34
  to
• 28:34
  have
• 28:35
  Digital
• 28:35
  media
• 28:36
  represented
• 28:36
  in
• 28:36
  the
• 28:37
  time
• 28:37
  capsule
• 28:37
  because
• 28:37
  that's
• 28:38
  such
• 28:38
  a
• 28:38
  huge
• 28:38
  part
• 28:39
  of,
• 28:39
  of
• 28:39
  what
• 28:39
  we're
• 28:40
  living
• 28:40
  through
• 28:40
  right
• 28:40
  now
• 28:40
  and
• 28:40
  what,
• 28:41
  and
• 28:41
  what
• 28:41
  the
• 28:41
  library
• 28:41
  is
• 28:41
  providing
• 28:42
  to
• 28:42
  the
• 28:42
  public.
• 28:43
  Well,
• 28:43
  it's
• 28:43
  remarkable
• 28:44
  if
• 28:44
  you
• 28:44
  think
• 28:44
  about
• 28:44
  it.
• 28:45
  100
• 28:45
  years
• 28:46
  in
• 28:46
  the
• 28:46
  scheme
• 28:47
  of
• 28:47
  things
• 28:47
  is
• 28:48
  long
• 28:48
  time
• 28:48
  to
• 28:48
  us,
• 28:49
  but
• 28:49
  it's
• 28:49
  not
• 28:49
  really
• 28:49
  a
• 28:50
  long
• 28:50
  time
• 28:50
  in,
• 28:50
  in
• 28:50
  the
• 28:51
  sort
• 28:51
  of
• 28:51
  the
• 28:52
  universe.
• 28:52
  And
• 28:53
  you
• 28:53
  know,
• 28:54
  to
• 28:54
  think
• 28:54
  that
• 28:54
  we
• 28:54
  went
• 28:55
  from
• 28:55
  a
• 28:55
  time
• 28:55
  when
• 28:56
  there
• 28:56
  was
• 28:56
  only
• 28:57
  newspapers
• 28:57
  to
• 28:58
  a
• 28:58
  time
• 28:58
  when
• 28:59
  newspapers
• 29:00
  are,
• 29:00
  are
• 29:00
  having
• 29:01
  a
• 29:01
  hard
• 29:01
  time
• 29:01
  just
• 29:01
  surviving
• 29:03
  and,
• 29:03
  and
• 29:04
  so
• 29:04
  many
• 29:04
  other
• 29:04
  new
• 29:05
  media
• 29:05
  have
• 29:05
  come
• 29:06
  in
• 29:06
  and,
• 29:07
  and
• 29:07
  taken
• 29:07
  over
• 29:08
  the
• 29:08
  landscape.
• 29:09
  It
• 29:09
  is
• 29:09
  remarkable
• 29:10
  what's
• 29:10
  been
• 29:11
  done
• 29:11
  in
• 29:11
  a
• 29:11
  hundred
• 29:11
  years.
• 29:12
  And
• 29:13
  so,
• 29:13
  you
• 29:14
  know,
• 29:14
  I
• 29:14
  remember
• 29:14
  when
• 29:15
  I
• 29:15
  got
• 29:15
  into
• 29:15
  television,
• 29:16
  you
• 29:17
  know,
• 29:17
  there
• 29:17
  it
• 29:17
  was
• 29:18
  so
• 29:18
  different
• 29:18
  than
• 29:19
  it
• 29:19
  is
• 29:19
  today
• 29:20
  that
• 29:20
  we
• 29:21
  could
• 29:21
  spend
• 29:21
  a
• 29:21
  couple
• 29:21
  hours
• 29:22
  talking
• 29:22
  about
• 29:22
  that.
• 29:23
  But
• 29:23
  the
• 29:23
  bottom
• 29:24
  line
• 29:24
  is
• 29:25
  times
• 29:25
  change,
• 29:26
  things
• 29:27
  change.
• 29:28
  And
• 29:28
  you
• 29:28
  know,
• 29:29
  I
• 29:29
  think
• 29:29
  the
• 29:29
  idea
• 29:29
  of
• 29:30
  refreshing
• 29:31
  a
• 29:31
  time
• 29:31
  capsule
• 29:32
  is
• 29:32
  a
• 29:32
  wonderful
• 29:32
  thing
• 29:33
  to
• 29:33
  do.
• 29:35
  There
• 29:35
  is
• 29:35
  one
• 29:36
  thing
• 29:36
  I
• 29:36
  can
• 29:37
  guarantee
• 29:37
  you
• 29:37
  won't
• 29:38
  be
• 29:38
  put
• 29:39
  in
• 29:39
  that
• 29:39
  time
• 29:39
  capsule
• 29:41
  and
• 29:41
  it
• 29:41
  is
• 29:41
  not
• 29:42
  a
• 29:42
  book.
• 29:46
  The
• 29:46
  world's
• 29:47
  largest
• 29:48
  pop
• 29:48
  up
• 29:48
  book
• 29:49
  which
• 29:50
  will
• 29:50
  be
• 29:50
  on
• 29:51
  display
• 29:52
  at
• 29:52
  the
• 29:52
  Central
• 29:52
  Library
• 29:54
  starting
• 29:54
  July
• 29:55
  11th.
• 29:55
  So
• 29:56
  that's
• 29:56
  something
• 29:56
  that
• 29:57
  we
• 29:57
  won't
• 29:57
  be
• 29:58
  able
• 29:58
  to
• 29:58
  fit
• 29:59
  in
• 29:59
  the
• 29:59
  time
• 29:59
  capsule,
• 30:00
  but
• 30:00
  we
• 30:00
  want
• 30:00
  everyone
• 30:01
  to
• 30:02
  for
• 30:02
  sure
• 30:02
  go
• 30:03
  see
• 30:03
  it
• 30:03
  in
• 30:03
  the
• 30:03
  library.
• 30:04
  How
• 30:04
  big
• 30:04
  is
• 30:05
  it?
• 30:06
  Have
• 30:06
  you
• 30:07
  been,
• 30:07
  have
• 30:07
  you
• 30:07
  been
• 30:07
  in
• 30:08
  the
• 30:08
  rotunda
• 30:08
  of
• 30:08
  the
• 30:08
  Central
• 30:09
  Library?
• 30:09
  Rotunda,
• 30:10
  the
• 30:10
  second
• 30:10
  floor.
• 30:12
  I
• 30:12
  have
• 30:12
  been
• 30:12
  there
• 30:13
  a
• 30:13
  long
• 30:13
  time
• 30:13
  ago.
• 30:14
  It
• 30:14
  will
• 30:14
  take
• 30:15
  a
• 30:16
  lot
• 30:16
  of
• 30:16
  space
• 30:17
  from
• 30:18
  the
• 30:18
  rotunda
• 30:19
  and
• 30:19
  again
• 30:19
  it's
• 30:20
  a
• 30:20
  record
• 30:21
  breaking
• 30:21
  book.
• 30:22
  It's
• 30:23
  by
• 30:23
  artist
• 30:24
  printmaker
• 30:25
  Daniel
• 30:25
  Gonzalez
• 30:26
  and
• 30:26
  it
• 30:26
  is
• 30:26
  being
• 30:27
  paper
• 30:27
  engineered
• 30:28
  by
• 30:29
  Matthew
• 30:30
  Reinhart.
• 30:32
  So
• 30:32
  yeah,.
• 30:34
  Hopefully
• 30:35
  by
• 30:35
  the
• 30:35
  time
• 30:35
  we
• 30:35
  get
• 30:35
  this
• 30:36
  on
• 30:36
  the
• 30:36
  air
• 30:36
  we'll
• 30:36
  be
• 30:37
  able
• 30:37
  to
• 30:37
  have
• 30:37
  a
• 30:37
  picture
• 30:37
  of
• 30:37
  it.
• 30:38
  There
• 30:38
  you
• 30:38
  go.
• 30:39
  Yeah.
• 30:39
  And
• 30:39
  I
• 30:40
  guess,
• 30:40
  you
• 30:40
  know,
• 30:40
  we
• 30:40
  should,
• 30:41
  we
• 30:41
  should
• 30:41
  give
• 30:41
  people
• 30:42
  an
• 30:42
  opportunity
• 30:42
  to
• 30:42
  know
• 30:43
  how
• 30:43
  to
• 30:43
  reach
• 30:44
  you
• 30:44
  guys
• 30:45
  for,
• 30:45
  for
• 30:45
  more
• 30:45
  information,
• 30:46
  your
• 30:46
  website.
• 30:49
  Yeah,
• 30:49
  you
• 30:50
  can
• 30:50
  go
• 30:50
  to
• 30:50
  lapl.org
• 30:52
  backslash
• 30:53
  central100
• 30:54
  and
• 30:55
  that's
• 30:55
  listing
• 30:56
  everything
• 30:57
  that
• 30:57
  we're
• 30:57
  doing
• 30:57
  this
• 30:58
