Transcript
- 0:00Three, two, one. So in the past, we have talked about when you don't feel well,
- 0:07you end up saying, I think I've got this.
- 0:10And the last time we did this, it was part one. Where what did we do? We did the worst thing.
- 0:16We went on the internet and we tried to self-diagnose ourselves.
- 0:21We're going to take a step to the side now. When was the last time you self-diagnosed
- 0:27yourself with the last time you did one random act of kindness?
- 0:34What have you done lately to put smiles on other people's faces?
- 0:39Dr. E is back, and it's another edition of Have Faith, Let It Begin, and it starts right now.
- 0:48It's Monday, and you know what that means. Welcome to Have Faith.
- 0:54Let it begin podcast of inspiration.
- 0:58It's a podcast of hope. It's a podcast of faith and it's a podcast of friendship.
- 1:05Here is your host, Angel Santana and special co-host Dr. E.
- 1:11We're a three podcast time. That's it, man. Let's rock and roll in three, two, one.
- 1:18Dr. E, welcome back, my friend. It's Have Faith, Let It Begin. How are you, buddy?
- 1:23Man, I'm missing you. I'm missing my have faith colleagues and friends and crime,
- 1:27and I'm hoping all is well, and I hope you guys are all feeling great.
- 1:31Spring is here. I wish the rain would leave, but I'm not complaining because
- 1:35it's not sleeting, and it's not icy. It's not cold, although it is cold and
- 1:40windy and wet, but I'll take it over January, February, November, December for sure.
- 1:46And I have to bring this up because we haven't had a chance to talk,
- 1:49you and I, because we've had really busy schedules.
- 1:51But the last time that we spoke on a personal level, you knew that my refrigerator broke.
- 1:58And I did an episode on that. And what you didn't probably get a chance to get
- 2:02to, and I want to hear your reaction to it. I've been dying to do this to you.
- 2:05The gentleman who I hired, thanks to my wife, because let's be honest, the wife did it.
- 2:10And his name is Alan. He's the appliance whisperer, and that's what he listed on his business card.
- 2:17Not only did he fix my refrigerator, do you know he fixed the frigid air microwave?
- 2:23I love it. As a matter of fact, I think that we should maybe anoint him to sainthood,
- 2:28this St. Alan. It's still working.
- 2:31And it's a beautiful thing. Anyway, so I know when I heard that,
- 2:35I said, what I have to laugh about is you've had this drama with this,
- 2:39with this microwave that probably cost you $75.
- 2:43No, the microwave cost us 400. It was overpriced and we had so much drama with
- 2:50it that this guy took him literally, no lie, two minutes to diagnose it and fix it.
- 2:57And you know what? It was a sane hood. My refrigerator had to break in order
- 3:01for him to be there to fix that microwave.
- 3:04But I don't want to get off topic.
- 3:07What would you say, because I know, Dr. E, we just did a podcast that aired
- 3:12this past Sunday and I encourage everybody to check it out.
- 3:15But what have you done lately in your either personal life or in your career
- 3:20that would you say put a smile on somebody's face? Can you think of anything off the top of your head?
- 3:26Actually, I think I did. I had a wonderful, wonderful woman that I saw this
- 3:30week and she was accompanied by her daughter who was developmentally disabled.
- 3:37And before I even started talking to the patient, I spent about a half hour
- 3:42kind of just getting to know her daughter and asking her questions about her life.
- 3:48And she was about to start the special Olympics and just getting her like involved in her mom's care.
- 3:56You know, she didn't understand what was going on really, but it was just so,
- 4:01you know, it made my heart swell with delight to be able to see her smile and see her laugh.
- 4:08And then when I, then when I went to business and I went to work and I took
- 4:12care of the mom and did what I had to do when I left,
- 4:17you know, her and her husband, like they hugged me and they said,
- 4:21you know, we've been to many doctors in this process with our,
- 4:24with our breast cancer situation.
- 4:27And no one has ever taken even a second to not only talk to our daughter,
- 4:32but even acknowledge that she's in the room.
- 4:35And they wanted to thank me for that. And I thought, my gosh, that's like so natural.
- 4:42Obviously, this is a very strong person and a very strong family.
- 4:46We look at our children, if we happen to be lucky enough and blessed to have
- 4:51children that are not developmentally disabled and that are living normal, you know,
- 4:58normal lives, fulfilling lives, happy lives, successful lives.
- 5:01And then we look at a family that has, has had to raise an adult,
- 5:05a child to an adulthood, you know, who is significantly, you know,
- 5:11burdened with all of these disabilities and, you know, not just,
- 5:14you know, intellectual disabilities, but physical disabilities and whatnot.
- 5:18And, and all the challenges of having to, you know, to, to deal with all the
- 5:23things they must have to deal with.
- 5:25I thought it just so natural to spend a few minutes to acknowledge that and
- 5:31to also pay respect to that by being respectful to their kid.
- 5:36And I think that would be my answer.
- 5:39That's what I think I did this week to put a smile on someone's face.
- 5:44And if you know Dr. E like I do, this is not something that he does just to
- 5:47do it. It just comes natural.
- 5:49He will walk into a room and he'll acknowledge everyone in the room.
- 5:53If it takes an extra 15 minutes to shake everyone's hand, he's going to do it.
- 5:57So I'm not shocked by that story. And I think that's a really awesome and touching story.
- 6:02I think for me, just this past week, I received a phone call at the job from
- 6:06an individual who reached out to me.
- 6:08The patient wasn't even there anymore, but wanted to thank me for just making her feel special.
- 6:14Meaning where, and you know, here's a woman that's calling about her daughter
- 6:19who was going through a lot and dealing with a lot of issues and,
- 6:23you know, the family's going through it.
- 6:25But every time she would get me on the phone, she felt at peace before she was
- 6:29able to be transferred to the doctor, transferred to the daughter.
- 6:32So, you know, it made me realize that, you know, we're not just switchboard operators.
- 6:38We're not just 911 operators at the hospital. We are, we're people too.
- 6:42And, and we don't know just because people call you, whether it is on your home
- 6:46phone or whatever, we don't know where people are coming from.
- 6:49We don't know what, what their challenges are. We don't know what their struggles are.
- 6:52And if we can just take a few seconds to welcome them and, and,
- 6:56and, and ask them how their day is, it, it just puts people at ease and it,
- 7:00and it, it sets the tone and allows people to just understand that,
- 7:04that we are, we all go through it at one point or another.
- 7:08I love that story. I appreciate that. And if anybody who is in our half faith,
- 7:13let it be, you know, family that works at the hospital, come by my office because
- 7:17there's really cool artwork on my door for my new friend.
- 7:21Absolutely. Listen, on behalf of all of us here at half faith,
- 7:24let it begin. I want to take the opportunity to challenge you.
- 7:27We all know that this month is autism awareness month.
- 7:30We all know that there's people out there that can use a hug,
- 7:34a phone call, a prayer, even a friendly hello, a wave, a nod,
- 7:39whatever, a wink, a good wink, and a good smile.
- 7:43Anything and everything goes a long way. And it all starts with us.
- 7:47Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you for today's episode of Have Faith Let It Begin.
- 7:51We thank you for Dr. E who always takes the time to be on this show once a week.
- 7:55And we thank him for his podcast that is doing so many different things and inspiring so many.
- 8:01The Crock Podcast is just another great opportunity for all of us to learn more
- 8:06about cancer and survivors and all things that we don't even know about.
- 8:11And it's just taking a few minutes.
- 8:13One random act of kindness can easily change somebody else's day,
- 8:18life, and maybe give them a little bit of hope. So we're asking you to try that as well.
- 8:23May God be with you. May he shine his light upon you and grant each and every
- 8:26single one of you peace on earth.
- 8:28And never forget, have faith, let it begin, baby. See you guys later.
