- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Zach Power. The province's justice minister has confirmed that
- 0:09Speaker 1: police officers with the RNC will start to wear body
- 0:11Speaker 1: cameras next year. Helen Conway-Ottenheimer says the program will start
- 0:15Speaker 1: to be rolled out in the 2027-28 fiscal year. She
- 0:19Speaker 1: says the groundwork was laid for the program in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: spring budget with the introduction of a new digital evidence
- 0:26Speaker 1: management system known as DEMS. Kamoi Ottenheimer says that there
- 0:31Speaker 1: are about 400 active users of that system with the RNC,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and she calls the rollout of the body cameras Phase
- 0:36Speaker 1: 2 of that project. She believes that the implementation will
- 0:40Speaker 1: go to the heart of public trust between residents and police.
- 0:43Speaker 2: A fundamental objective is with respect to transparency and accountability.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And so this will be a very important tool in
- 0:55Speaker 2: terms of building that confidence in our police force.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Clocks fall back in the province this coming weekend but
- 1:03Speaker 1: a number of jurisdictions have decided not to follow with
- 1:06Speaker 1: the tradition causing difficulties for some organizations. Environment Canada says
- 1:10Speaker 1: because of the time zone changes in some provinces and
- 1:13Speaker 1: territories times may not appear accurately on its website although
- 1:17Speaker 1: the content of the alerts and forecasts remain accurate. Environment
- 1:20Speaker 1: Canada says that it is in the process of updating
- 1:23Speaker 1: the system to reflect those changes. The Minister of Finance
- 1:28Speaker 1: says a windfall from excessive oil revenues will eliminate the deficit,
- 1:32Speaker 1: adding that government has received more than $ 600 million a date.
- 1:37Speaker 1: In April, the provincial government projected a $ 688 million deficit
- 1:41Speaker 1: for this fiscal year, but sky-high oil prices have continued
- 1:45Speaker 1: to eat away at the debt. That oil windfall is
- 1:48Speaker 1: what government says allowed it to temporarily cut the provincial
- 1:51Speaker 1: portion of the HST on diesel and gasoline starting December 1st.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Craig Pardee says that they're still crunching the numbers on
- 1:58Speaker 1: the added revenue, noting that 80% of which will be
- 2:01Speaker 1: used to knock down the provincial debt. He says the
- 2:04Speaker 1: previous government had some debts deferred to this year and next,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which means they had to carefully plan the budget.
- 2:09Speaker 3: And what the deficit means is that we don't have
- 2:12Speaker 3: to borrow that money. The only thing being someone to
- 2:15Speaker 3: say that, well, you're still going to borrow money next year.
- 2:17Speaker 3: We do. But part of the fiscal update, I'll try
- 2:21Speaker 3: my best to explain that any debt that's out without
- 2:24Speaker 3: sinking funds is not paid off. got a term, whether
- 2:26Speaker 3: it be 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, some government
- 2:30Speaker 3: at some time, that debt will come right back to
- 2:32Speaker 3: you in your fiscal. Well, boy, we've got it coming
- 2:35Speaker 3: next year and the year after. A lot of debt
- 2:37Speaker 3: that was pushed out that is coming back.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And finally, a brand of residential snow clearing equipment has
- 2:42Speaker 1: been recalled due to the risk of electric shock. Benchmark
- 2:45Speaker 1: electric snow throwers sold at home hardware stores across Canada
- 2:49Speaker 1: have been recalled. After reports of broken power cables, Health
- 2:53Speaker 1: Canada says it's received 19 reports so far to date
- 2:56Speaker 1: and there have been no injuries. Those who own the
- 2:59Speaker 1: product are asked to contact Home Hardware for instructions on
- 3:02Speaker 1: how to get a refund. And that's your news. Your
- 3:04Speaker 1: weather forecast is next.
