- 1:07That's so good. This this edition of Sports
- 1:12Illustrated never made it to print.
- 1:13This was this was stolen from the archives.
- 1:19It's the. It's the one where I'm.
- 1:21Looking over at Jeter for me. Oh yeah, no, that was my
- 1:24favorite when I was making, when I was making this, this was that
- 1:28was my favorite face. He's like geeking so hard at
- 1:30jeets. But as you can see, you got 3 of
- 1:34Nate. And if you're not, if you're not
- 1:36watching, you're not watching on.
- 1:36YouTube. Then you're missing out.
- 1:39You're you're missing out and then you got a rod right there
- 1:43and then you got Jeter over here.
- 1:45Gosh, that's so good. That is so unbelievable.
- 1:50I kind of want it honestly. It's a it's a pretty, I'm not
- 1:55going to lie. It's like a pretty solid shirt.
- 1:57Like I if it if it didn't have three of you on there, I'd
- 2:03probably wear it a lot more or a shirtless a rod and Jeter, I'd
- 2:06probably wear it a lot. More.
- 2:07That's so good. Get rid of that ticker.
- 2:13I just want to take this in. That's so beautiful.
- 2:17Unbelievable. This is This is why you make
- 2:25bets. This is why you do it.
- 2:27You know some of them. I'm not saying I'm not saying
- 2:32bet your rent money, but you know, every once in a while you
- 2:37put out a wager and it pays off This, this pays off big.
- 2:42This is great. This is one of 10 episodes,
- 2:46right? Is that what we agreed on 10?
- 2:49This is one of 10. This is delightful.
- 2:53I just wanted to get out of the way.
- 2:54It was a swaggy shirt dude. It's it's, it's pretty clean.
- 3:00Just the subject matter isn't ideal.
- 3:04But hey, you know what? Better time?
- 3:07What time? Hey, we got Murray in the chat.
- 3:12He's just having himself a good old time.
- 3:14I told you guys. I told you.
- 3:16You were in for a treat. I told you.
- 3:19I mean, that's a heck of a That is a heck of a shirt.
- 3:22Heck of a shirt designed by yours truly if I'm being honest
- 3:24it. Really is.
- 3:27Dude, but no I figured I'd I'd make the debut with the being on
- 3:33the brink of the postseason here.
- 3:35Figured it was a a good time. The vibes are high.
- 3:37Getting excited for some October baseball.
- 3:39We got a lot of it to talk about.
- 3:41Some clinches have taken place. I don't even know what you're
- 3:44saying right now, I'm just leaving.
- 3:47We even have there's people, there's people probably jumping
- 3:50on the the stream that are like, what is this guy?
- 3:52Wearing. If only I should put in the
- 3:56ticker. Yeah, I've only asked the bet.
- 4:00I mean, I can, I can, I can do that.
- 4:06Let's do that. Please don't ask about the
- 4:09shirt. Oh, it's so good, Yes.
- 4:15Let's get that ticker up there for the folks so they know all
- 4:19right, Hey, even even on top of this, this T-shirt that you're
- 4:24you're able to see now we got a we got a little guest go guest
- 4:29appearance via video shout out friend of the pod, Ryan Ripken.
- 4:33I I I we had a pestered, I pestered him, pestered him a
- 4:39little bit. I, I, I've checked to see if he
- 4:42could get on to talk some OS recently and he's just been, as
- 4:47you would imagine, very busy talking OS.
- 4:49He's talking Ravens. They got a whole bunch of
- 4:51business going on over there. So I said hey the.
- 4:54Prince of Baltimore has a lot. A lot.
- 4:57I was like on the on the checklist.
- 4:59I was like, shoot me, shoot me your your Cliff notes thoughts
- 5:02on on the OS post. Now that they've got the, the
- 5:05post season birth secured, I was like, shoot me your thoughts.
- 5:08He goes, I'll do one even better for you.
- 5:09I'll send you a video that you can drop on the pod.
- 5:11I said, wow, Prince of Baltimore at work.
- 5:14So we, we even got that. So do you, I mean, do we just
- 5:18want to start with that 'cause I on on my on my list of things to
- 5:23talk about. It was the O's clenching the
- 5:24postseason burst. So we we can, we can start with
- 5:27that if we'd like. Let's get a right guy in here.
- 5:29I missed that. I missed that beautiful voice.
- 5:32All right, let's, let's see how. Let's see how front of the pod
- 5:35Ryan Ripken's doing. What is up three O take
- 5:39community and Kyle Nate, I guess hello to you guys too.
- 5:42I guess I'm giving a little bit of a perspective on the
- 5:45Baltimore Orioles. If you guys have ever heard of
- 5:47them. They are going back to the
- 5:48postseason 27 years. It's been since Baltimore has
- 5:53gone back to the postseason for consecutive seasons.
- 5:56I'll say that one more time. The Baltimore Orioles are going
- 5:59back to the postseason for consecutive years for the first
- 6:02time in 27 seasons. Look, it hasn't been a perfect
- 6:07year for Baltimore, right, guys? You know, it's been an up and
- 6:09down injury plagued and really that's where it started.
- 6:13The injuries decimated. You go through the Orioles
- 6:16rotation. Kyle Bradish, Tyler Wells, John
- 6:20Means now, Grace Rodriguez, done.
- 6:23He's not returning. So four of your guys are no
- 6:27longer going to be there. And then you've had a lot of key
- 6:30injuries offensively, but it looks like they're getting some
- 6:32of those guys back. And no, Felix Batista, one of
- 6:36the best closers in the game. But I got to tell you what it
- 6:39feels like if you guys were wondering, feels like the
- 6:44Orioles are starting to gain confidence.
- 6:45And This is why I love playoff baseball.
- 6:48And honestly, you could say maybe hockey can rival this,
- 6:52maybe with it where anything can happen.
- 6:56You think you're the best team in baseball.
- 6:58Well guess what, it don't matter once you get to October.
- 7:01It's can you win each series, can you get hot and can you
- 7:05advance? Three teams last year won 100 or
- 7:09more games, the Braves, Dodgers and Orioles.
- 7:12Those teams combined to win one playoff game.
- 7:16Not a series, one playoff game. So yeah, the Birds got a chance.
- 7:23Absolutely. You got Corbin Burns, Zac F when
- 7:25they can go out and do their thing in Games 1 and 2.
- 7:28Dean Kramer would be the third starter.
- 7:30But the goal right now, hopefully they're not too
- 7:33hungover from celebrating. Tell you what, though, sometimes
- 7:36you can play better hungover. Guilty on that one.
- 7:40But in general, the Orioles are in a good position now.
- 7:44You just hope that some of these guys can gain that momentum,
- 7:47keep that energy and fire as they move towards and hopefully
- 7:51they wrap up that first wild card spot.
- 7:53And then if you can, all bets are off.
- 7:55And for Yankee fans out there, the Birds aren't intimidated by
- 7:59the Bronx Bombers. They won the season series last
- 8:02night. They feel they can go into New
- 8:04York and win and that's the team that they very well could see
- 8:08down the the the stretch run, but they got to get past the
- 8:12wild card round first. But they are going to be there.
- 8:14It's all I got. Miss you guys.
- 8:16Hope everyone's doing well and yeah, go birds.
- 8:23The Prince. That's the homie right there,
- 8:25shut out Ryan taking some time out of his busy day.
- 8:28I think he I think he got so busy that he forgot to send the
- 8:32video between the time that we were on the phone talking about
- 8:35it and when we needed to hop on the call.
- 8:37That's how busy he is right now. So I had to, I had to nudge him
- 8:41a little bit and say, hey, by the way, we go on in like 30
- 8:44minutes. So yeah, anything you do.
- 8:46And he got hey, like like he always does.
- 8:48He came through. So do.
- 8:49You think the Prince is driving himself around in the car?
- 8:52He's he's in the whip. I don't know if.
- 8:54He's driving himself around. He's not.
- 8:56Doesn't have the driver. No, he would even tell you that
- 8:59he doesn't have a driver. What what do we think though?
- 9:01What do we think on on his thoughts about the OS?
- 9:03He he brings up the point that I think gets forgotten about at
- 9:06this time of year, every year it seems, in that anything can
- 9:11happen. And I know it's sort of a
- 9:13cliche, but he brought up the point about the 100 win team,
- 9:15the 100 plus win teams last year.
- 9:17And that's a very valid point where it's like any narratives,
- 9:20any, any bits that people run with up until, you know, middle
- 9:27of September, those kind of go out the window.
- 9:30Not, not 100% of the time, because sometimes you see things
- 9:34pan out exactly the way that the public majority assumes it will.
- 9:41But there are times where you just have to throw those, those
- 9:47narratives, those jokes, those bits out the window.
- 9:49Because you have to realize, like, as much as you may hate a
- 9:52team's chances as much as you may like a team's chances,
- 9:57anything can happen in the post season.
- 9:58I think he's exactly right when it comes to the Orioles.
- 10:01Yeah, 100% right. I mean it's, it's get in, see
- 10:06what happens. The tough thing is, is it's it's
- 10:10pitching, it's 100% pitching for the Orioles and everyone wants
- 10:15to complain about like how lost the offense can look at times.
- 10:20But I think it's just like the lack of depth that the pitching
- 10:24side that would make me nervous if I'm an Orioles fan.
- 10:30Not just the back end question marks, but like the actual depth
- 10:34in the rotation. Can you hang around for A5 game
- 10:39set or A7 game set? That's the biggest question.
- 10:43I think this team is absolutely good enough to go toe for toe in
- 10:50a in a three-game set. I think that's very doable.
- 10:52I think anything can happen in a three-game set because most
- 10:55teams, especially this year with how even the playing field is,
- 10:59are equipped to win two out of three.
- 11:02But it's the length of going through this run, right?
- 11:06You're having to win two out of three and then you're having to
- 11:09go play A5 game set and then you know, 27 game sets is is that
- 11:16possible? Does this roster have that in
- 11:19them? I think that's the biggest
- 11:21question mark. And there's obviously talent
- 11:25there, right? Like we all know there's talent
- 11:27there. We all know that this this is
- 11:29the beginning of of a very large window opening up for a while.
- 11:34The Orioles are going to be a problem for a while, but this
- 11:40year there's a lot of question marks.
- 11:45Yeah. I mean, I, I know I just got
- 11:47done saying that or, or reiterating I should say that
- 11:50anything can happen in October, But I don't know.
- 11:53When you look at the, the Orioles pitching issues that
- 11:56you're you're talking about, and that was, and then Ryan was
- 11:59talking about and then you get the gut punch today of Grayson
- 12:02Rodriguez being officially done. He's not throwing another pitch
- 12:05this year. It's like.
- 12:08Yeah. This kind of was a narrative
- 12:10coming into September, and even though we're knocking on the
- 12:16door of of the post season, even though the Orioles have their
- 12:19ticket punched, it's really hard to find any optimism there.
- 12:24And it'd be one thing if, like, you know, Corbin Burns was doing
- 12:27Cy Young things, but it's been tough.
- 12:30It's been tough. So it's like even even not
- 12:35having that top heavy rotation, even if we're light, even if we
- 12:39lack depth, we still have this guy.
- 12:40There's not so much of that vibe going on right now.
- 12:45So I think the best that they can hope for is like, you know
- 12:48what, let's just get this offense turned around, which you
- 12:51and I were talking about before we hopped on.
- 12:53It's kind of looking like that's what they're doing in New York
- 12:56because that's what the Yankees love to do is just give teams
- 12:59opportunities. And it looks like they're like,
- 13:02you know, possibly able to figure it out offensively and
- 13:05just they have the line up to bludgeon teams offensively.
- 13:10It's just it hasn't really clicked for a while.
- 13:14So but he mentioned it like the whole hit a reset button once
- 13:20you get into October. That's like the beauty of this,
- 13:23this is it. This is the epitome of a team
- 13:25that's like, you know what, let's just flush that.
- 13:27Let's just flush whatever's happened in the second-half.
- 13:31And when you look at this team on paper and you take all stats
- 13:36away and you're just like, oh, this team can bang, makes you,
- 13:42makes you nervous, makes you nervous for sure.
- 13:49I don't know they, I mean, they were my AL representative in the
- 13:52World Series at the start of the year as I, I think they were for
- 13:57a lot of folks. But it's just a tall ask.
- 14:02That is a really, really tall ask, especially when you get to
- 14:06a point at in the year where pitching really matters.
- 14:11And I know that a lot of times you can just mash your way to a,
- 14:16a World Series. But I don't know.
- 14:20I don't know if I, I just don't know if I see the Orioles being
- 14:24capable at this stage in the game to, to mash their way to a
- 14:27World Series. Like you said, they're, they're,
- 14:29they're trying to find their way offensively right now.
- 14:32Is it too little too late? I don't know.
- 14:34I just, I personally, I just don't feel all that optimistic
- 14:38about the the outlook heading into next month.
- 14:42I get that. Think that's very fair?
- 14:47Astros have clinched the American League West.
- 14:52I made sure to once again give your your video, your clip from
- 14:59earlier this year, a bump on the story today talking about how
- 15:04you know, if you're if you're one of these people kicking the
- 15:07Astros while they're down, if you're eating into them, like
- 15:11if, if, yeah, if you're eating at them with the way they've
- 15:13started, just sit tight. It's it's inevitable.
- 15:20It's coming. And here we are sitting here
- 15:23talking about how the Astros have clinched the American
- 15:26League West for the fourth straight time, giving them seven
- 15:31and the last eight seasons. And you want to know the one
- 15:35that they didn't get is back in I believe the 2020 season.
- 15:41I was it. Was it the Oakland A's that
- 15:43snuck it out? I think it was.
- 15:46Was it? That's so insane.
- 15:50Yeah, we need to confirm here. I mean that that's, that's kind
- 15:55of the the, the run that we're talking about here.
- 16:01So I go wash year was the one year they missed.
- 16:06Yeah, it sure did. Oakland A's back in 2020.
- 16:08Wow. So you take out that.
- 16:11That's crazy to say that the A's won the division.
- 16:13The Marlins won the division. What a weird year.
- 16:17Nate, I saw something today and this, this absolutely blew my
- 16:21mind. I saw some of that and I'm sure
- 16:24if I would have thought about it for any length of time, I could
- 16:26have come to this. I could have arrived at this
- 16:29conclusion myself. Since John Fisher, and we're
- 16:33going to talk about John Fisher here in a minute.
- 16:35Since John Fisher took over the Oakland A's, they've won the
- 16:41Division Four times and the Mariners have won the division
- 16:48zero times. That's tough.
- 16:52Dude, that's I, I, I get the pain now of Mariners fans.
- 16:57I mean that's that's it's. Not good.
- 17:00That's tough. It's not good.
- 17:03Any Who's the Astros? Yeah, pretty Dang good.
- 17:09Pretty Dang good. We told you it was coming.
- 17:12This is just, it's, it's the makeup and core of a team that's
- 17:17been there, done that, man. It's just business as usual.
- 17:23Did you see Alex Bregman getting subbed defensively for the
- 17:29ovation? I didn't see that.
- 17:31No, I mean, I saw it was yeah, it's possible.
- 17:36Blast game. On the brink go about that free
- 17:39agency. Just weird, man.
- 17:42Like it's there's tributes are just being tossed around a
- 17:45little too. Much.
- 17:46No, no, no, no, no, no. I come on.
- 17:49You and I can both understand why they would do that for Alex
- 17:52Bregman and I, I don't think there should be any question as
- 17:55to why they would do it for that guy given.
- 17:58The oh the post season. Not with the post season.
- 18:02They know they're hosting. Yeah, but you're not going to,
- 18:04you can't. You're not doing a, you're not
- 18:06sending him off in a tribute at the end of a, you know, season
- 18:09series. Lost.
- 18:10Maybe? What if you're up by like, what
- 18:12if you're down by 5 in game three in the ninth?
- 18:16You know what? I'm saying we're dealing with
- 18:18what ifs, though. What if they may?
- 18:19What if they take it to game five in the Division series and
- 18:23they lose a heartbreaker in the ninth?
- 18:25You're not going to sit. You're not going to pull him out
- 18:27for a tribute in Game 5 like that.
- 18:29This is, you know, this is the time.
- 18:31He'll get his tribute in his last AB no matter what.
- 18:33He'll get the standing O in his last AB when he's.
- 18:35No, not no, you can't. That that's that's on the back
- 18:39burner in the in the postseason. I don't like this.
- 18:42I don't, no. I think it's, I think it's
- 18:44silly. Why are we having this
- 18:45conversation? I think it's silly, I think it's
- 18:49weird, I think it's awkward. He didn't know what's happening.
- 18:51Like it it, I don't know, it just gave me.
- 18:54Weird vibes. That's not, I mean, that's a a
- 18:57different conversation, but the fact that it's happening now
- 19:00versus a potential like Game 5 lost in the Division Series I.
- 19:03Don't think he's leaving. There's a market for him, don't
- 19:09get me wrong. Yeah.
- 19:10That's the thing. It's not, it's, it's not a
- 19:12situation where it's like so obvious that he's staying.
- 19:15Yeah, given the market. But I'm curious, I don't think
- 19:19he's going to get as much money as he's as he's thinking.
- 19:21I think it's going to be lower than what projections or
- 19:25predictions are saying. Anywho, yeah, dude, Houston
- 19:30Astros, man. Like that's the one team we know
- 19:33because they're they can't the Yankees in the in the guardians
- 19:38are kind of still fighting for home field for the by.
- 19:42So that's one team that we know we're going to be seeing Tuesday
- 19:47night hosting. I I don't know if it's night
- 19:50game, but we'll see him Tuesday hosting.
- 19:53So good stuff, man. Just it's it's the norm.
- 19:59It's hard to hard to fight, hard to hate.
- 20:05When they just continue to prove it year in and year out and you
- 20:08have different, different guys that come in and different
- 20:12veterans that step in and have big moments.
- 20:15And you and I have talked about how like Jason Hayward is
- 20:17already played a role, played a factor.
- 20:23There's not many question marks. I think the biggest question
- 20:26mark is, is probably just Justin Verlander.
- 20:29That's the only thing that has me wondering, will he get a
- 20:34postseason start? Sorry.
- 20:38You were talking about the hosting.
- 20:39You're talking about the wild card, correct?
- 20:41Yeah. Yeah, Yeah.
- 20:42OK. I just want to make sure we're
- 20:43on the same page. Yeah.
- 20:46You're talking Verlander. I, I don't know, that might be a
- 20:51situation where it's like anything you get out of him as a
- 20:54bonus at this point, I mean, you, if you're the Astros,
- 21:01you've had to adapt like you've had no choice but to adapt over
- 21:05the course of this year with your, with your staff.
- 21:09So now, I mean, now that you're here, now that you've been able
- 21:13to get to this point with what you have, it might just be a
- 21:18situation where you just have to, you have to keep riding that
- 21:21wave and and expect very minimal out of a guy like Justin
- 21:25Verlander. But at the end of the day, it's
- 21:27still Justin Verlander and it's still the postseason.
- 21:30So I'm not going to sit here and say that what we saw this year
- 21:34during the regular season is going to be the same thing or
- 21:37it's going to play out the same way next month because that's a
- 21:39dip. We're dealing with a different
- 21:40beast at that point. But the, the, the main take away
- 21:47here, though, is just what it took for the the Astros to get
- 21:52to this point that we're talking about.
- 21:55I mean, let me remind you middle of June, they're trailing the
- 21:59Mariners by 10 games, 10 games. And we're not just talking about
- 22:05like just to get into the postseason, like we're not
- 22:08talking about they're not, they're not ten games back from
- 22:10a wild card, 10 games back from the division and they come back,
- 22:14they close the gap, albeit you could chalk that up to the
- 22:18Mariners maybe losing it. Either way, a healthy
- 22:22combination of both, we'll call it because the Mariners, one of
- 22:24the best, correct me if I'm wrong, one of the best teams in
- 22:27baseball in the second-half, or at least there for an extended
- 22:30stretch, close the gap 10 games going on to win the division by
- 22:36multiple games. It's it's just it's inevitable
- 22:39to use the word I used earlier. And it's, I mean, it's the same
- 22:42song, it's the same dance. And we're looking if, if they
- 22:46advance the ALCS this year, that will be eight straight if I'm
- 22:53not mistaken. Yeah, it would be in the.
- 23:00The other interesting note is, you know, it's not AJ Hinch,
- 23:09it's not Dusty Baker, it's Joe Espada.
- 23:13And there's going to be moments in postseason ball where strange
- 23:16decisions are going to be made and some backfire, some pay off.
- 23:23And it's, you know, the regular season is its own beast and job
- 23:27well done on Joe Espada did what he needed to do, came in, got
- 23:31his job done in his first year. But it's going to be interesting
- 23:34to see how a brand new manager navigates some of those
- 23:41scenarios. So yeah, Houston, you're
- 23:46spoiled. Quick question here on the
- 23:50Astros before you wrap up them is would you say that the roster
- 23:55makeup of the Houston Astros carries too much weight to
- 24:01warrant putting Joe Espada in the Manager of the year
- 24:03conversation? Given the other candidates are
- 24:06in the that are in the mix, would you at least put them in
- 24:08the conversation given some of the setbacks they've had to deal
- 24:12with? Or to you, is the roster makeup
- 24:17too much? I mean, when you look in the AL,
- 24:21it's it's I think you and I agree.
- 24:25Stephen Vogt is way up there. Who else is he really truly
- 24:34competing with? AJ Hinch Quartro.
- 24:40Pretty much the entire American League Central on the White Sox,
- 24:43I guess you could say. Yeah, that I mean, I, I would
- 24:48put him in the conversation. I, I wouldn't give him the the
- 24:51title, given what some of these other teams in the Central have
- 24:55done or what some of these teams in Central have done.
- 24:57But it's been an impressive year.
- 25:01I mean, because it's not like they were, they weren't losing.
- 25:03They weren't losing like fringe pieces.
- 25:05I mean, you lose Kyle Tucker, you'll lose some some guys in
- 25:08that handful of guys in that rotation for for multiple months
- 25:15and to not miss a beat with this team, that's a that's a tip of
- 25:20the cap spotter, I would say. It's true.
- 25:23It's definitely true. Just a thought.
- 25:27Phillies, my Philadelphia Phillies, our Philadelphia
- 25:36Phillies, America's team. Have.
- 25:40Have also clinched the division their First Division since 2011.
- 25:49How you feeling about the Phillies right now?
- 25:51Where do where do where do the 2024 Phillies vibe stack up to
- 25:55the Philly Phillies vibes of 2022-2023?
- 26:05First off, I think it's nuts that it's been that long since
- 26:10they've won a division and it just shows you the dominance of
- 26:15the Braves. I mean, the Braves have owned
- 26:18that division for like we're going on like 20 years of just
- 26:22dominating, not saying consecutive really, but like
- 26:26overall, you can call this in a domination.
- 26:30But yeah, I mean, I it's hard for me because when I look at
- 26:34that roster, like you can only bank on vibes for so long and
- 26:40you can only ride that for so long.
- 26:42And when you look at this roster and you're like, you know, a lot
- 26:46of these guys are just one year older, you know what I mean?
- 26:50And not saying that they're old. I would say that there's a
- 26:54number of these guys that were seeing like the end part of
- 26:58their prime and it's just it's interesting, but overall, like
- 27:07it's hard to find a more complete team overall.
- 27:12It's hard to find a more healthy team.
- 27:14They're pretty Dang healthy. They got most of their guys.
- 27:18They're going in pretty full strength.
- 27:22You got a lot of guys that have that have kind of been there,
- 27:25done that, so all things are kind of lined up.
- 27:31If you're a Phillies fan, you got to feel pretty confident.
- 27:34I'm just there's some guys that I don't have a ton of faith in
- 27:42where I can just plug in and say no matter what, I know I'm going
- 27:46to get prime production out of a Nick Castianos, out of AJT, Rio
- 27:53Muto. I think Trey Turner's still a
- 27:56problem. I think Bryce Harper's still a
- 27:58problem. Kyle Schwarber will see flashes
- 28:02of it, but it's just it's. He flips.
- 28:05He flips the switch from the lights of he.
- 28:07Really, he really kind of does. So it's it's I'm I'm interested
- 28:11to see how this plays out. Well, let me ask you.
- 28:16This, this is what we just seen by the way, that I, I, I'm not
- 28:19worried about a first round buy. I think what team that's been
- 28:23there, done that and most recently a roster that's very
- 28:27similar to last year's, I don't get too nervous with a first
- 28:30round bye. Let me ask you this based on
- 28:38what we just talked about or, or reiterating the the OR driving
- 28:44home the point that anything can happen in October.
- 28:48Given that, or in spite of that, I should say, looking at the
- 28:55rest of the National League, could we could we make the
- 29:00argument that 2024 is the easiest postseason path that the
- 29:05Phillies have seen in the last three years?
- 29:07Given the the down nature of the Dodgers with their their
- 29:12pitching issues, the fact that the the Braves aren't as much of
- 29:16AA problem or an issue this year.
- 29:18Not that they were an issue for the Phillies in the previous two
- 29:20years. Phillies handled them without a
- 29:22problem, but even even less so of a threat this year, just
- 29:28given their injury issues as well.
- 29:32The Padres, you know, like we'll, we'll touch on them here
- 29:35in just a minute. They they can prove to be a
- 29:38serious threat, I think with the with the way things are rolling
- 29:41there in San Diego. But comparatively, is this not
- 29:46the easiest path that the Phillies have seen the last
- 29:48three years? I think that's what makes
- 29:50everything a little a little nerve wracky, right?
- 29:52Like now that now the targets on your back, now the pressure is
- 29:59on, right? And you can argue that they had
- 30:01this like underdog vibe thing going the last few years that
- 30:06really kind of catapulted them up.
- 30:09Now it's a little bit different when you're the top dog.
- 30:11It's a little bit different when you're at the top of the
- 30:13mountain. If you catch a red hot Padres
- 30:19team with no break and they're just rolling, I don't know.
- 30:27I mean, the Dodgers, yes, I see if it, if it is in the NLCS, I,
- 30:32I see some issues there with their pitching timing bags are
- 30:39kind of rough lately. I think they're kind of
- 30:42scuffling a little bit. The Mets, I, I don't know, I
- 30:45just, I can't get, I can't get on board.
- 30:47I understand it's, it's a cool story that you guys are doing
- 30:50and you're playing good ball lately.
- 30:52I just, I don't know, I can't see too deep of a run there.
- 30:55But yeah, I mean, you could, you could see it.
- 30:58I just, I think it's a little bit different when you're
- 31:00talking about a team that gets in on vibes and good baseball
- 31:07and momentum versus like, you know what?
- 31:12This was our job. We had to handle business and we
- 31:15did it. Here's a few days off.
- 31:18I don't know. I don't know.
- 31:20This is such a weird year dude. Yeah, but you could.
- 31:23So lukewarm on all these teams. There's problems with everybody.
- 31:29Sure, but that's also represented by the fact that
- 31:31again, to to repeat, there's there, there was not 100 win
- 31:35team in baseball this year. And I think that more so speaks
- 31:37to a lot of the issues these teams are facing internally or
- 31:41or just with their roster construction or, or what have
- 31:44you. And I think it speaks a little
- 31:48bit to the nature, I would hope, of the postseason that we're on
- 31:52the brink of and that it's going to be a little bit more
- 31:55well-rounded. And hopefully some of these
- 31:58series go a little bit deeper because everybody wants that.
- 32:02Nobody, nobody. I mean, unless you're a fan of
- 32:04the team that does the sweeping, nobody likes seeing sweeps in
- 32:07the postseason. I agree I don't want any.
- 32:10I'll be honest with you, even if I, now that I think about it,
- 32:13even if I was a fan of the team that does the sweep or is doing
- 32:17the sweeping, but if, if, if you could promise me that they're
- 32:21going to win the series, I'd rather, who wouldn't want to see
- 32:24it go 4-5 like 567 or whatever. I, I, I need that.
- 32:28So I'm hoping that the this postseason is a little bit
- 32:31different in that regard. And I'm hoping that it's going
- 32:34to end up that way with the potential for mix of teams that
- 32:41we're looking at in terms you throw the Tigers in there, you
- 32:45throw the Mets possibly in there.
- 32:47There's just some very unique stories going on right now
- 32:50around baseball and that are a part of the mix.
- 32:52And I'm I'm hopeful that it makes things a little more
- 32:55interesting this year. I, I, I how else, like based on
- 33:00everything we've seen this year, based on the finishes that we're
- 33:03looking at, based on it's going to come down to an extra day.
- 33:06Like these are dude like. I tell you.
- 33:10What then? I don't.
- 33:12I can't think of another year this way where I'm like, I don't
- 33:16know. No, exactly, And I was just
- 33:18about to say I this will be the hardest, at least in recent
- 33:22memory. Yeah, recent memory.
- 33:24This is going to be the toughest postseason bracket prediction I
- 33:26think we've seen in some time. I agree.
- 33:29I I, I woke up today thinking like, oh, like this will be
- 33:32maybe a fun episode to give like a little teaser ass.
- 33:35Like what I'm thinking. I don't know.
- 33:37I don't know. I I like even with the Phillies,
- 33:39people get on me. Oh, the the the like secret
- 33:42Phillies fan. Even with the Phillies, I'm not
- 33:46like as on fire about as I was last year and the year before.
- 33:49It's just like they're going to, they're going to give, I would
- 33:52imagine a deep run, but it's, I don't, I just don't know, like
- 33:57it's and I'm conflicted because I, I just got done saying like
- 34:00this might be the easiest path to ever the World Series.
- 34:02But that to your point, that kind of scares me because I'm
- 34:05going, well, now we're going to, they're going to get caught with
- 34:08their, their pants down and it's going to be somebody else in the
- 34:13NLCSI. So I, I legitimately have no
- 34:16clue what this, what this post season is going to look like,
- 34:18but it's kind of exciting because I don't really have a
- 34:21dog in the fight. Well, not, not quite.
- 34:23We're not dead yet. We're not dead yet. .3% I think
- 34:28I saw. I think I saw .6 today, so give
- 34:33us the credit where it's due. Sure, my bad.
- 34:37What is the score of the game right now?
- 34:39I don't have it up. I choose to not watch the games
- 34:44while we record. Unlike some folks on this
- 34:47program, I'm. About to turn it off because
- 34:49it's pissing me off. Socks are down to to nothing,
- 34:52but that's fine because they came back and won last night.
- 34:55They got to win out. It's it's possible anything is
- 34:58possible. Kevin Garnett who else we got
- 35:02here? Padres.
- 35:03Let's let's switch gears here to the Padres team.
- 35:05We have been alluding to this episode have clinched a spot in
- 35:09the postseason and and what a fashion they did it the the game
- 35:14ending triple play. Although I got it.
- 35:16Can I be honest with you? Can I just be honest with you
- 35:21real quick and just with our listeners and the people on our
- 35:23on the stream? I feel like a little too much
- 35:27was made of the triple play. Like I, I saw far too many
- 35:32articles about it. I saw far too many posts about
- 35:36it. It's like, no, this is sick.
- 35:38It's a triple play to punch your ticket to the postseason.
- 35:41But it was like it was a little, it was a little over the.
- 35:43Top yeah, let's not make it like a a headline everywhere on every
- 35:48app kind of kind of sick. I mean, I think I even saw some,
- 35:53some podcasts out and about like headlining their, their episode
- 35:56with the fact that the, and I'm like, it's it.
- 35:59No, it's a triple play. Very cool moment.
- 36:02Very cool, especially to do it in LA especially.
- 36:05For sure, for sure. Manny starting it, I think
- 36:08there's a lot of cool aspects to it, but yeah, Nah, I'm not going
- 36:13to yeah, this is going off by the way I'm.
- 36:16There you go. Yep, that's what I like to hear.
- 36:19It's got nose. But dude, like look, Padres team
- 36:23that has a lot of I, I kind of see like at least on the
- 36:30offensive side, I see a lot of selflessness.
- 36:33You know what I'm saying? All said, like I see a lot of
- 36:36selflessness. I see I see the Tatis moving
- 36:42from his primary position. I see a Xander Bogarts moving
- 36:45from his primary position. I see a Luis Araya's
- 36:48understanding, hey, I may not be able to play here.
- 36:51I'll play here. You got Donovan Solano playing
- 36:54at first base. Sometimes Cronenworth is having
- 36:56to take a bench role. Sometimes like you just, I feel
- 37:00like you just have like, more so now than I've seen in the past
- 37:05in San Diego, everybody pulling the rope in the same direction.
- 37:09And it just it it, it gives me that like less superstar, less
- 37:17about me. Even with Manny, even with
- 37:21Tatis. Like it's the two guys that have
- 37:25been the face of baseball in certain moments of their career
- 37:29so far. Like you see them being OK,
- 37:34chilling, toning it down a little bit.
- 37:39I don't know, man. Like there's like, I feel like
- 37:42there's a lot of humble pie that have been eaten.
- 37:45A lot of these guys have eaten humble pie.
- 37:49Kyle Higashioka, dude, like coming onto the scene for them
- 37:53back up in New York, right? Like I just, I like what I'm
- 37:59seeing jerks and Profar. No one wanted me.
- 38:01You guys wanted me. Now I'm here, right?
- 38:04Like it's just, it feels, it feels different than it has in
- 38:09the past. I mean, the bullpen as a whole,
- 38:15you would have thought that you you took all their dogs and
- 38:17started to kick them with the way they've they've responded
- 38:20this year. I mean, they're taking things
- 38:22personally want to, I mean arguably the best in baseball
- 38:26that and that's been a huge source of their and you need
- 38:29that. You need that.
- 38:31I mean, you look at the you look at the All Star break, I think
- 38:34they were like they were like right around 500, I think 50 and
- 38:385050 and 49 or something like that.
- 38:41And they've been the best team in baseball since that point.
- 38:45From that, from from the break to when they clinched the best
- 38:50team in baseball, I think they were 41 and 17.
- 38:55I like it, is what I is what I saw.
- 38:57I like what's happening. I like what they're doing.
- 39:00And it seemed like the Padres scares me a little bit when you
- 39:04look at a team like the Phillies. 100% they have
- 39:08firepower, dude. They have firepower.
- 39:10This isn't like we're not struggling to name dudes on this
- 39:14roster. Like we know we're aware of what
- 39:16they're capable of. I mean, even that, I don't know
- 39:20if you heard the call by Don Orsillo on that triple play to
- 39:24end the game. I didn't.
- 39:26But even to like to end it, he, you know, he's getting hype in
- 39:30the way that only Don Arcillo can.
- 39:32And he closes it with something to the effect of like, is this
- 39:35the year? Is this finally the year for the
- 39:37faithful? And I'm like, Oh, I don't feel
- 39:40like that question has been asked in previous in recent
- 39:44years. And it worries me not worries me
- 39:46because like if the Padres go on and win the whole thing, that'll
- 39:48be that'll be cool for baseball. It'll be cool for San Diego, But
- 39:51it it worries me for the rest of the bracket because I'm going
- 39:56they're rolling right now. And now we're starting to, we're
- 39:58starting to, to insert that narrative into the conversation
- 40:02into the, into the baseball public's eye of like, is this
- 40:06finally the year that the, the Padres do this thing?
- 40:09Because they they're giving you every reason to believe that it
- 40:12is. Yeah, yeah, Interesting vibes in
- 40:19San Diego. I, I, I think this is a team
- 40:24that like you, you wouldn't want to have a break.
- 40:29And the fact that they are coming in hot, the fact that
- 40:32they're just going to keep rolling in, I'd be nervous.
- 40:38Who, who would they like? So they would.
- 40:41Don't even ask me about the bracket dude.
- 40:42I I'm trying to make sense of the bracket but there's too many
- 40:45loose ends right now. Let me I know there's a lot of
- 40:51loose ends, but let's just play around a little bit click on
- 40:55that wild card button. All right, so.
- 41:00Honestly, if I'm being honest, I'd I kind of want the I, I at
- 41:06this at this stage. As of right now, it's the Mets,
- 41:10right? Don't, don't ask me.
- 41:13Because the division winner will get the the lowest wild card
- 41:17winner. So like for example, as of right
- 41:22now, the Diamondbacks are in the last wild card spot, which means
- 41:27they would get they would get them, they would get the Dodgers
- 41:36if the Dodgers. No.
- 41:43The would it not be? I think the number one seeds
- 41:46still up for grabs. Yeah, between them and the
- 41:51Phillies. But would it not be the Brewers?
- 41:55The last wild card spot would be the Brewers would.
- 41:58Get the Brewers. As a as currently A-90 win team
- 42:02to the other two teams having 93 wins at this moment.
- 42:12So yeah, it would be the if, if it held right now, it would be
- 42:15the Mets, Padres and Mets and the.
- 42:18And then Brewers, Diamondbacks, whatever.
- 42:20Yeah, I like that. I like.
- 42:24I'd hate that. If I were the Mets, I'd be real
- 42:27nervous. That's the one team I don't
- 42:29think I would want to mess with. If you're the Mets, I would
- 42:32want. If I would want something else.
- 42:38No, for sure. And look, we've we've ragged on
- 42:40the Mets more than our fair share this year.
- 42:43But I tell you what I mean, if we're going, if you're going off
- 42:46of vibes at at this stage in the game, the.
- 42:49Vibes. The vibes are high.
- 42:50That would be a heck of a match up, the Padres and the Mets.
- 42:54I would imagine it would be a better outcome than what was
- 42:56that, 2022 when we saw the Padres roll into town and sweep
- 43:02them out of. Queens in Queens.
- 43:04Yeah, yeah. So I I think we'd see a better
- 43:08potential match up there. But at this stage of the game, I
- 43:10know the Dodgers haven't officially clinched the West as
- 43:12of this second, but I kind of want to see the Padres just keep
- 43:20rolling. I don't I don't know if I want
- 43:21to see the Padres get any days off with with that that by if
- 43:25they could somehow find a way to make that happen.
- 43:27But. I like, I like what's happening
- 43:33in San Diego. I do.
- 43:35Should we go out there? You don't go out there.
- 43:38Are you talking about like this month, like in October?
- 43:41I don't know what you talking about.
- 43:43I don't know. That'd be neat.
- 43:46What's? Going on, that would be neat.
- 43:49Certainly be neat. I wouldn't hate it.
- 43:52I wouldn't hate it. I was so sick.
- 43:55I got to get out there. I really need to get out there.
- 43:57So sick. I do hate, however, what's going
- 44:01on with this Mets Braves thing. And I think a lot of I think
- 44:05both fan bases are, are hating what's going on with this.
- 44:08Yeah, who dropped the ball here? Like, is this the league?
- 44:12Because I, I was reading a little bit more about it today.
- 44:15And it makes sense that the Braves had no incentive to
- 44:21rearrange or move up, move back the game because of the, the
- 44:30gate that they'd be getting and because of the the situation of
- 44:37them just being the truest. And I, I don't know it, it sort
- 44:41of made sense. But I'm also like, OK, well, you
- 44:44need to be winning baseball games, though.
- 44:47And if you don't make something happen, Braves and you you push
- 44:52this to to Monday, which is what's happening at this stage
- 44:55because they've already canceled tonight, Wednesday's game and
- 44:59tomorrow night, Thursday, that game as well.
- 45:02And they're they're now. For hurricane right?
- 45:05Yeah, for Hurricane, they're pushing it to a doubleheader on
- 45:07Monday, so those will be the only games are going on.
- 45:09Everything else will be locked up and we're going to have to
- 45:12watch the Mets and Braves play a doubleheader on Monday to
- 45:16determine the final. Maybe.
- 45:21The maybe. Yeah, the final make up of the
- 45:24of the bracket. Maybe.
- 45:26I hope. I mean, if, if this is what
- 45:27we're going to do, we may as well at least make it
- 45:29interesting. Yeah, that would be really dumb
- 45:32if like the last game meant nothing like the second game of
- 45:38the doubleheader. Yeah, man, I don't Stupid
- 45:45Hurricanes out here in Arizona. Like we don't even, I don't even
- 45:49know when hurricane season is. I don't know when people have to
- 45:52deal with hurricanes. I don't hear about hurricanes.
- 45:57So I didn't know about this until I saw the games.
- 46:02We're getting a whole lot of rain up here, I know that much.
- 46:05It's been raining here all week so we're getting the residual
- 46:08effects of it and I don't know if it's stopping anytime soon.
- 46:12I got you. Well, I mean, look, this is this
- 46:16is going to be electric. If if these games mean
- 46:24something. I mean, like when you talk about
- 46:26the Mets, I think Mets fans wise, it's going to be electric.
- 46:32I think their their side of things.
- 46:35It's going to be like, this is perfect.
- 46:37This is how we wanted it, right? Like it's going to have that
- 46:40kind of yeah, energy to it. I just, I just don't want to
- 46:44watch. It I think Braves fans checked
- 46:46out a long time ago. I mean, how could you?
- 46:50How could you? Not, and like, I know we've been
- 46:52throwing shade for a while. Yeah, I've had, I've had my run
- 46:56in run insurance with Braves fans over the last couple years.
- 47:00But I'm like, just just let sleeping dogs lie, you know,
- 47:05like just just just understand. And again, going back to how we
- 47:09opened up with anything that happened in October, I I just
- 47:12don't know if that applies to this Braves team even more so
- 47:15than the. Orioles knows it.
- 47:17Yeah, I think everyone knows it, too.
- 47:19That's what sucks. It's sad.
- 47:21I don't. It's very sad.
- 47:23I don't want to see, I don't want to see a lifeless Braves
- 47:26team get hot for five games, limp into the the OR.
- 47:32I guess technically it'd be like over a span of eight games, I
- 47:36think they've won like three in a row or something.
- 47:38I don't want to see a lifeless Braves team get hot for the last
- 47:42week of the season, creep in, or I should say, back their way
- 47:46into the the postseason and then just fall flat on their face
- 47:50when we could see. As much as I get irritated by
- 47:54the Mets at times. I'd rather see that.
- 47:56I'd rather see a more exciting Mets team, A-Team that's going
- 48:00to at least give you reason to believe that they could do
- 48:03something special in October. I don't know, but I just, I, I
- 48:08wish it didn't come down to the, the final few days of the
- 48:12season. But if it is going to come down
- 48:15to the final days of the season, at least make a Monday worth our
- 48:18while. Like don't just flame out over
- 48:20the weekend and then roll into town or show up to the the field
- 48:24on Monday. It'd be like, all right, well,
- 48:26this is a formality and nothing else.
- 48:30Too much, too much. John Fisher talking about too
- 48:38much. I don't know if you saw, did you
- 48:40see the letter that he he sent out to ace fans?
- 48:43Sure did. Sure did.
- 48:46I saw I saw a meme posted about it this week and it said
- 48:52something to the effect of like, Good thing the ASPR team got to
- 48:55this before John Fisher sent it out.
- 48:58Because what John Fisher was originally going to sent out.
- 49:01And then it just had a line where it said, dear A's fans, F
- 49:04you. That's that's probably what he
- 49:07was going for. That's probably what he was
- 49:09going for. But yeah, the letter was
- 49:15insincere. The letter was from what I've
- 49:20from, from what I understand, from what I've heard, from what
- 49:22I've read, from what I've. Seen pretty false.
- 49:24Full of Yeah, full of lies. There been.
- 49:28I mean, you want to talk about Oakland A's fact checkers?
- 49:31They're running this thing up and down like nobody's business.
- 49:34Talking about. Well, you, you said this, you
- 49:36really did this. You said you were going to do
- 49:40this and you ended up not doing that.
- 49:44I can read you here for those who haven't gotten caught up to
- 49:48speed with with the letter that he sent out the A's fans or he,
- 49:50I think he posted it on social. He he opened the first couple
- 49:56paragraphs talking about the A's history and blah, blah, blah.
- 49:59And like, whatever that I mean, that that's not why you're
- 50:02writing this letter, John. We all know that the history of
- 50:05the A's is, is super rich and deserves to be acknowledged,
- 50:09especially with this chapter closing.
- 50:11But like, don't, don't cushion your letter or don't pad your
- 50:14letter to open it up with, with history or accomplishments that
- 50:18you weren't even necessarily a part of or that you probably
- 50:21honestly were even really rooting for, if we're being
- 50:23honest. But he starts out with the
- 50:25history and then he gets into the, the meat and potatoes of
- 50:28what he says. And just bear with me because
- 50:30there's a a little decent chunk here.
- 50:33He says the A's are part of the fabric of Oakland, the East Bay,
- 50:37and the entire Bay Area. When Lou Wolf and I bought the
- 50:40team in 2005, our dream was to win World Championships and
- 50:43build a new ballpark in Oakland. Over the next 18 years, we did
- 50:47our very best to make that happen.
- 50:49We proposed and pursued 5 different locations in the Bay
- 50:53Area and despite mutual and ongoing efforts to get a deal
- 50:56done and for the Howard Terminal project, we came up short.
- 50:59Only in 2021, after 16 years of working exclusively on
- 51:03developing a home in the Bay Area and faced with a binding
- 51:06MLB agreement to find a new home by 2024, did we begin to explore
- 51:11taking the team to Las Vegas. There are millions of dedicated
- 51:14and passionate A's fans in Oakland and around the world.
- 51:18Countless dedicated staff members in Oakland Coliseum
- 51:21employees have poured their hearts into this team, and their
- 51:24efforts have meant so much to our community.
- 51:27I know there's great disappointment, even bitterness,
- 51:29though I wish I could speak to each one of you individually.
- 51:32I can tell you from I can tell you this from the heart.
- 51:36We tried. Staying in Oakland was our goal,
- 51:38it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it.
- 51:41And for that, I'm genuinely sorry.
- 51:43Looking ahead, I hope you will join our beloved as as we move
- 51:46forward on this amazing journey. I hope I will see you again
- 51:50sporting the green and gold, and I hope we will make you proud.
- 51:53John Fisher, that honestly, the, the part that the part that
- 52:01pisses me off as a baseball fan was when he just dropped in that
- 52:05we tried. It's like you would have been
- 52:08better better suited to leave that out, John, because you very
- 52:11clearly didn't try. Yeah, I don't care about any of
- 52:13that. Don't care and.
- 52:19Again, not to beat a dead horse, but I still stand by what I've
- 52:23said. And I've we just talked about
- 52:25this last episode with the the whole upcoming final series at
- 52:28the Coliseum thing, and now we're on the eve of the final
- 52:32game at the Coliseum. I still stand by what I said and
- 52:39I think both of these elements can be true.
- 52:42Do I think John Fisher made it a genuine effort?
- 52:45No, I don't. Based on everything I've read,
- 52:48based on the feedback you've gotten from people that are like
- 52:51involved with the organization, that follow the organization,
- 52:54that have been fans of the organization for decades.
- 52:57Do I believe he made an effort? No.
- 53:01Do I think that AIDS fans could have made a stronger statement
- 53:07in the years in which the team saw success over the last
- 53:11decade? Also, yes, because the biggest
- 53:16hang up with them was we don't have a winning product on the
- 53:19field. And when they made the post
- 53:21season over the last, well call it 10-15 years, the numbers
- 53:27don't really reflect that. They, the, the attendance
- 53:30numbers, the, the general sentiment of support did not,
- 53:36did not necessarily reflect that.
- 53:38And sure, you could make the argument like, well, maybe they,
- 53:40they, they just lucked into it and we didn't really have this
- 53:44sort of vision or expectation on opening day.
- 53:48And I mean, what do you want us to do kind of thing?
- 53:51Maybe that's what happened. But I, I'm, I'm trying to see it
- 53:55from both sides here, not from the perspective of John Fisher,
- 53:57but I'm trying to see it from like the business side of
- 54:00things. And then also from the, the
- 54:03perspective of A's fans and the pain that they're feeling,
- 54:05because like we talked about, like this is it you can, you can
- 54:10save the save the narrative, save the, the jokes for another
- 54:13day. Like the reality is, is this is
- 54:15it for the Oakland A's in Oakland.
- 54:18And like, say what you will, but like it's, it's a, it's a
- 54:23strange time to be a fan of Oakland A's baseball.
- 54:28And I just don't think that's, that this letter helped
- 54:31anything. And I think John Fisher knew
- 54:33that. And I think this was almost
- 54:37spiteful, if I'm being honest with you.
- 54:41You're probably right. Did you see that that clip of
- 54:44the the Oakland news anchor? Oh, he went in.
- 54:48He went in. Homie popped off for sure.
- 54:51He's like, I could call 3 billionaires right now and, and
- 54:54they'd be, they'd buy this team in a heartbeat.
- 54:57And I'm like, all right, man. Relax.
- 55:00First off, no need to flex like that.
- 55:04Secondly, it's not how it works. You know, something's got to
- 55:07something's got to give with the Commissioner's Office and
- 55:11something's got to change. But yeah, man, it's curious to
- 55:17see how, how it's going to look tomorrow for the last game.
- 55:24Curious to see what those those two fans that bought those two
- 55:31seats that got ripped out of the the ground did you see?
- 55:34That I did see that. That was crazy.
- 55:37What are those two, What are those two guys going to do
- 55:39tomorrow when they show up and they're like just rebars
- 55:43sticking out of concrete? Yeah.
- 55:46Anyway, it's it's going to be, it's going to be something that
- 55:51like, oh, it's, it's like a weird smudge on baseball.
- 55:56You know what I mean? Like I, I think for those who
- 56:03those, I don't know if you want to call them purists or those on
- 56:05the side of like being against Barry Bonds, still, still like
- 56:11locking in and watching the home run race to chase down Hank
- 56:15Aaron. Like you like you're still like,
- 56:18you're almost like having to watch it even though it sucks.
- 56:21I think that's how a lot of baseball fans, that's their
- 56:24sentiment tomorrow of like I, I got to watch this, even though I
- 56:29don't feel great about it and even though I, I feel a certain
- 56:33way about it, it's it's not a great look on baseball.
- 56:36It's not a great look on, on a, a professional organization in
- 56:41sports. I think it's a bad look, but is
- 56:46what it is man is what it is. How about another walk off win
- 56:50though? That would be That'd be kind of
- 56:53a sick sight. I'm in.
- 56:58I mean, I, I think as much as a day baseball game in Oakland on
- 57:05a Thursday afternoon could I, I think it would break the
- 57:10Internet, yeah, as as much as that, as much as that
- 57:14realistically could as yeah, as far reaching as that impact
- 57:17could be. I think that like that would.
- 57:19As big of a wave that I could make, yeah.
- 57:22Exactly, I mean, that's that would be cool to see and and I'm
- 57:25hoping I'm, I'm hoping for that for them that I think that'd be
- 57:29that'd be cool. It'd be neat.
- 57:32Quite neat. Speaking of neat, Charlie
- 57:35Blackman says he might he might finally consider shaving the
- 57:41beard. This was a sad one.
- 57:45I'll be honest, I'm I'm a little sad.
- 57:47I think it's it was time. It's definitely time for sure
- 57:53living in Denver for as long as I did.
- 57:54Like I I do know that like Rockies fans love Chuck Nasty
- 58:00man, they love them some Charlie Black men a part of some huge
- 58:05moments. I think everyone can appreciate
- 58:08like his, his rawness and his what's the word I'm looking for
- 58:17like? Just like authenticity.
- 58:22Authenticity I guess is a good word.
- 58:24I was thinking more of like a like it's the opposite of being,
- 58:29you know, a superstar. Like not that saying that he was
- 58:32on that caliber, his unassuming. Nature just like showing up to
- 58:36the the the ballpark everyday. And I don't, I don't know if
- 58:39he's still doing it, but I know like during his prime, like he
- 58:41was still driving like a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
- 58:45Like, and that to me is very, it's very Denver, it's very
- 58:50Colorado. It's very like, you know what,
- 58:53I'm just going to drive this 4 wheel drive because it gets me
- 58:55to where I need to go and it works through the snow and it
- 58:58gets me to the mountains. And I think he, he was just very
- 59:02perfect for the Colorado Rockies.
- 59:07Very, very cool dude. Actually got a chance to meet
- 59:10him. I don't know if I've ever seen
- 59:12someone as barrel chested that will seeing Charlie Blackman in
- 59:17person. You're like, that's a big man.
- 59:20Like you don't you don't think you realize how big that dude
- 59:23is? Just a very cool dude.
- 59:27And when I was when I was coaching my high school kids,
- 59:30all of them of course were asking like, you know, if he'd
- 59:32if he'd ever shave the beard. And even then he was like, no, I
- 59:37think it's going to stick around like it's just a just a cool
- 59:40dude, a very regular guy in a very, I think a very good
- 59:46career. I think a very good career.
- 59:48I don't think we're ever, ever going to consider Hall of Fame
- 59:52or a statue outside of Coors Field.
- 59:53But I think just a very good career in a in a fan favorite
- 59:58and a guy that seemed to play ball the right way.
- 1:00:04You know, and honestly, I think he's OK with that.
- 1:00:05You're talking about not having a statue outside of Coors Field,
- 1:00:08not being a Hall of Fame at at this with the way the world is
- 1:00:12now. I think if, if you're a if
- 1:00:14you're a professional athlete and you can, you can stick with
- 1:00:19a team for the duration of your career and you can come out on
- 1:00:24the other side of it without any controversy or without any
- 1:00:27scandal. And you're just a guy that shows
- 1:00:29up to work every day, does your job and does it above average
- 1:00:34for the most part. That's I think you can hang your
- 1:00:37hat on that if you're Charlie Blackman, and I'm sure he is.
- 1:00:40I, I feel like that's a guy that is going to tell you and, and
- 1:00:43reassure you that he left everything out on the field.
- 1:00:46And you know, honestly, that's what more could you want?
- 1:00:50He's also a guy that's going to disappear.
- 1:00:52You won't ever see or hear from Charlie Blackman again.
- 1:00:55Like it the way Brett Gardner has disappeared since he
- 1:00:58retired. Same thing for Charlie Black.
- 1:01:01He's going to go find a cabin in the mountains.
- 1:01:04He's going to be fishing in rivers and hanging out with his
- 1:01:07dog. That's just it.
- 1:01:09Well, I'm glad he didn't disappear before Nolan Arenado
- 1:01:12got a chance to so sick say his his goodbyes.
- 1:01:17That mean that that was very, very cool.
- 1:01:20If you didn't see it, there's a there's a picture floating
- 1:01:22around on social of Nolan Arenado just posted up against
- 1:01:26the the press conference room wall and he's just taking it in.
- 1:01:34He's taking his his former teammates announcement.
- 1:01:39I guess you could say he's just taking that in and that was just
- 1:01:42really cool to see. I mean, people can say what the
- 1:01:46one about Nolan Coronado. I know he's he's ruffled
- 1:01:48feathers at times, but that's just a teammate showing support
- 1:01:52for a teammate. And I mean, that was that was
- 1:01:55just really cool baseball moment that probably doesn't get
- 1:01:59appreciated enough. Yeah, but but very cool to see.
- 1:02:03And if, if you're not like super familiar with Charlie Blackman
- 1:02:06and, and like, I'm not saying now is the time to like queue in
- 1:02:09and, and watch a game, but like friend of the pod and, and
- 1:02:13someone that I've been connected with for a long time.
- 1:02:15Drew Goodman is the the color commentator for them.
- 1:02:19If you want to hear someone give a heck of a tribute on on
- 1:02:25Charlie Blackman's last game or last at bat or whatever kind of
- 1:02:29exit he's going to have in Coors Field list, listen to that.
- 1:02:33I promise you, Drew Goodman will not disappoint.
- 1:02:36That's going to be a heck of a call.
- 1:02:42Speaking of saying farewells, David Bell out as manager of the
- 1:02:49Cincinnati Reds. We don't have to go too much
- 1:02:51into it because I know it's we're a few days out from the,
- 1:02:55the announcement now, but just kind of a strange, maybe it's
- 1:03:01not as strange as I'm making it out to be.
- 1:03:02Maybe this was kind of expected. I just, I find it odd the timing
- 1:03:06of it given his extension last summer.
- 1:03:12I don't know, It just seems like you're you're changing
- 1:03:16direction. Yeah, I felt like they were like
- 1:03:18starting to starting to make a shift in a certain direction.
- 1:03:26Just a bummer year though, like just a disappointing year when
- 1:03:31you're talking about playing in that ballpark.
- 1:03:32And their bottom 3rd and pretty much every offensive category
- 1:03:39outside of Ellie De La Cruz. Just a very average.
- 1:03:44I think he was the only one with over an 800 OPS on the team.
- 1:03:49Like just nobody really producing.
- 1:03:54Strange deadline. We can go back to that moment,
- 1:03:59you know, as a specific one, but like, I don't know, I'm I'm just
- 1:04:03a little confused. Like I feel like there's a few
- 1:04:07there's there and and we'll get into the pirates here in a
- 1:04:10minute. But like I just see a lot of
- 1:04:13parallels there with their super stardom that you have on your
- 1:04:18roster. That is really strong stardom,
- 1:04:22stardom, potential superstardom, potential superstardom.
- 1:04:28They're on that path at least. And I think it's you'd like to
- 1:04:33see the organization build around that a little bit more.
- 1:04:38So I'm hoping that whatever happens next, call me crazy, can
- 1:04:46we get like Sean Casey in that chair?
- 1:04:49Is that a big leap? Dude, you would know better than
- 1:04:52I would. Does he have an interest in
- 1:04:53that? I don't.
- 1:04:54I feel like that anyone that's accepts a second-half of the
- 1:04:58year hitting coach position probably just needs something on
- 1:05:01the resume to say I've been in the dugout, but like, I don't
- 1:05:07know, a guy that holds and carries a lot of weight in
- 1:05:11Cincinnati knows how to talk. That's a good point.
- 1:05:16Media for a while. It's a good point.
- 1:05:18Nate could be interesting. What's interesting is the
- 1:05:24Pirates releasing Rowdy Talez 4 plate appearances shy of A200K
- 1:05:30bonus. That's interesting.
- 1:05:33Did. You read the comments the GM.
- 1:05:38From Cherington how he said it was like a zero factor or
- 1:05:41something. Zero factor see what 0 factor in
- 1:05:45like financial like. Motivation, yeah.
- 1:05:49What are we? Talking about Ben, I, I'm a, I'm
- 1:05:51a, I'm a pretty decent Ben Charrington guy.
- 1:05:54Like I'm not, I'm not, I'm not going to die on any sort of hill
- 1:05:58for him. But I mean, I I got nothing
- 1:05:59against the man, but like that, that's not what you want to say.
- 1:06:05Read the room like you. What do you think the feedback's
- 1:06:08going to be when you when you say something like that, when
- 1:06:10you look at the fact that he was quite literally.
- 1:06:12You count on one hand how many played appearances he was away
- 1:06:15from a bonus. They just didn't want to pay it.
- 1:06:18Yeah. What?
- 1:06:18What difference would it make in a season, in a lost season
- 1:06:21already that he gets rowdy Tills gets four more played
- 1:06:26appearances and. What are what are you?
- 1:06:27What are you trying to see with these call UPS?
- 1:06:32What are you trying to like? What, what's the motivation
- 1:06:34there? It's hard for me to believe.
- 1:06:38I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like Rowdy Till has had a
- 1:06:42fantastic season. It's not like he, you know, was
- 1:06:46posting numbers where you're like, you know what?
- 1:06:47Let's reward this guy for what he what he was able to provide
- 1:06:51for us this year. But I mean, you saw, you saw
- 1:06:57some leadership moments out of him in a pirate uniform, you
- 1:07:01know? Yeah, that's the other thing
- 1:07:02too. It's like this is how you're
- 1:07:03going to reward him for, you know, being a a pretty stand up
- 1:07:08guy for your organization and and being a guy that would come
- 1:07:12to the defense of some of your the talent that's in that
- 1:07:16clubhouse. And you're going to say, well,
- 1:07:18we just we just don't really feel like paying this, to be
- 1:07:20honest with you. That just seems kind of like a
- 1:07:22slap in the face. But I mean, the Pirates have
- 1:07:25known to be, have been known to be cheap, so I, I can't act too
- 1:07:30surprised, but I'm just like, you couldn't have come up with a
- 1:07:33better excuse than that. Come on.
- 1:07:36The way it's the way organizations handle this time
- 1:07:41of year that really shows some true colors, really shows it.
- 1:07:46And then in addition, they release Michael A Taylor as
- 1:07:48well. So couple roster moves there for
- 1:07:51the Pirates, but yeah. Let's no, let's see what these
- 1:07:53young guys got. I want to see what these guys
- 1:07:55got. Yep, five games to go, I want.
- 1:07:59To see it like huge sample size, huge moments, huge opportunity.
- 1:08:04Really excited to see what these young guys got.
- 1:08:08Games that carry a lot of weight in the hunt for the central
- 1:08:12crown that I guess they think they're still in.
- 1:08:16That's right. You know it's just a business
- 1:08:19decision. Trash.
- 1:08:24I was I was really doing my best to give some give the pirates
- 1:08:27some love this year, but that just if this is how they're
- 1:08:30going out, then, well, no, this is not like going out this.
- 1:08:33Just leaves a real sour want it, you know?
- 1:08:36Yeah, wasn't a lack of trying, but this just leaves a real sour
- 1:08:39taste in your mouth. I was ready for it.
- 1:08:41I was excited about it, you and I.
- 1:08:43I mean, we wanted to raise it. It's.
- 1:08:47Going to be a wanted to No, not today.
- 1:08:55Not today. Maybe maybe next year, but not
- 1:08:57today, I tell you that much. Yeah, that that pirate music
- 1:09:02button is going to get a little dusty over the next handful of
- 1:09:04months. Sure will, sure will.
- 1:09:05Might have to replace it. That's all I really had.
- 1:09:09You got anything else for the folks?
- 1:09:11I had something I'm forgetting now.
- 1:09:14You're so lost in this shirt. Yeah, for those the for those
- 1:09:18who have joined the join the stream since after I showed it
- 1:09:22earlier or to open the the pod, I'll give you one last look here
- 1:09:26before it it goes away for a few days.
- 1:09:30Just so delightful. It says baseball's chosen ones,
- 1:09:36all they do is win. And then it says right here,
- 1:09:40right here, how to lose a bet, page 42.
- 1:09:44And as you can see, just three pictures and they place in the
- 1:09:48faces of I think this is Alex Gonzalez, Edgar Renteria.
- 1:09:55I'm lost on the last one. I don't know.
- 1:09:57I don't remember who this one was.
- 1:09:59I don't remember either. I don't remember who this one
- 1:10:03was, but then obviously you got a Rod and and Jeter here.
- 1:10:05But yeah, this I'm trying to do this backwards in the in the
- 1:10:08screen. This this this one cracks me
- 1:10:12top. That's the top right.
- 1:10:14There this this version of Nate right here given given the eyes
- 1:10:17to to Jeter over here. I mean that's that's classic.
- 1:10:21So yeah, one one episode down. I got to wear this for 9 more
- 1:10:24episodes. Not looking forward to it, but
- 1:10:27you know a. Bet swaggy shirt.
- 1:10:29Swaggy shirt. I need that puppy framed when
- 1:10:31we're done. When the bet is over, I need it
- 1:10:33framed. And then still, still TBDI got
- 1:10:38to, I got to place that donation to the Yankees Foundation to
- 1:10:41wrap this, to wrap this bed up officially so.
- 1:10:44Settle up, it's time. You know what?
- 1:10:48I may wait. I may wait until the Yankees
- 1:10:52season's over, and that'll be the way that I put a bow on the
- 1:10:55season. Win or lose, I'll I'll make the
- 1:10:57donation the day that that their 2024 season is no more.
- 1:11:03That seems fitting. I.
- 1:11:04Like that. Let's let's hope it's a good
- 1:11:07day. Let's hope it's.
- 1:11:09That would not really suck, yeah.
- 1:11:11That would really suck for me if it's.
- 1:11:13Game. 6 World Series. They're hoisting the crown.
- 1:11:17I'm over here hitting submit on a donation to the Yankee
- 1:11:20Foundation. Excellent.
- 1:11:22That'd be excellent. Don't count on it.
- 1:11:24That's all I got, unless you got anything else.
- 1:11:26We'll see you guys. What is today, Wednesday?
- 1:11:29Oh, we'll see you guys Sunday for the post season preview
- 1:11:32episode. Probably going to be Monday, no?
- 1:11:37I guess. Depends.
- 1:11:38Let's we'll say this they mean something it.
- 1:11:41It yeah, we'll, we'll go ahead and put that, that caveat on it.
- 1:11:44If the games matter Monday, we'll I guess you'll hear from
- 1:11:48us Monday, but if not you'll hear from us Sunday.
- 1:11:52Well, that's crazy. That's craziness.
- 1:11:55Second and last episode of the regular season.
