- 0:00I'm Jessica and this is daebak. He Rambles were a couple of
- 0:20friends review, Korean dramas and I am pumped because I have
- 0:24repeat guests with me. I have Jenny back from the porch
- 0:27of playlist. Jenny, how have you?
- 0:30You been, how has been your year?
- 0:31Because it's been about a year since we've last talked on the
- 0:35goblin episode. Yeah, I thoughts wild.
- 0:38Oh my gosh, times flies. Definitely, I think good.
- 0:42We're still reviewing kdramas out here on the photo playlist,
- 0:46but yeah, we're currently watching a couple of non ROM
- 0:50call me. So, I'm waiting for the
- 0:51rom-coms. A hit for the rest of this year,
- 0:54but how have you been doing? I've been doing well, super
- 0:58busy. I had kind of a hectic morning.
- 1:00But I'm glad that I was able to finish the drama that we're
- 1:03going to talk about today, which is your beautiful from 2009.
- 1:09The reason why we're doing you're beautiful and
- 1:13specifically that I requested that you come on this way.
- 1:16This episode with me is because on the goblin review, you said
- 1:21that, your first kdrama was you're beautiful and we had a
- 1:25moment and I was like, wow, so I put that in the back of my mind
- 1:28and I was like, I have to have Jen.
- 1:29Me back if we ever hear beautiful.

- 2:30And let's go. We're going to talk about your
- 2:33beautiful and I went sideways on this one, I have the Wikipedia
- 2:38synopsis, instead of the Asian Wiki or my drama.
- 2:42Listen Ops is because those were complete trash.
- 2:44I don't even know how they let that on the internet.
- 2:46I was like, what is, how is this even English?
- 2:50So here's the Wikipedia synopsis of the show Coleman yo has lived
- 2:55at an orphanage with her twin brother combing them since
- 2:57childhood after their father died.
- 3:00Years later, mean them becomes a music Idol, and meanwhile lives
- 3:03in a junior, none dorm to fulfill her.
- 3:05She sorry. Marty laughing to fulfill her
- 3:09dream of becoming a nun. One day mean I'm successful
- 3:12successfully auditions for, and Wednesday and entertainment.
- 3:16Vocal auditions to join the musical band and Joe where
- 3:21Angel, however, he must leave for the u.s. in order to correct
- 3:25his botched plastic surgery. Mean times manager approaches me
- 3:28kneel and best for her to pose as mean them for a month until
- 3:32he recovers menial is against it at first, but eventually agrees,
- 3:36as a path to fame, would give the twins an opportunity to find
- 3:39their mother. Thus mean, yup was supposes has
- 3:43her brother and joins the band, an angel.
- 3:46Where she meets its members, the Arrogant Hwang Tae kyung.
- 3:49The gentle conch signal and the bubbly Jeremy.
- 3:53So yeah, this drama is basically.
- 3:57She crossed dresses as her brother, and she's originally, a
- 3:59None. And now she's thrown into the
- 4:01world of Hollywood and K-pop. Quite the show.
- 4:07Like right off the bat, this plot is Buck while this
- 4:11originally aired from October to November 2009, and I just want
- 4:15to pause here and say, like, where were you in 2009, what was
- 4:19happening in your life? Because it's been it's a while
- 4:23back. Okay, 2009, Jenny.
- 4:26And to give context for why this is my first kdrama to was.
- 4:30I was very much into the Kpop world, you know?
- 4:34Like like I wasn't ftisland fan and I was like 'I honky you know
- 4:40freaking puss is of this man on my wall and so I think I'll some
- 4:44like maybe Middle School maybe early High School.
- 4:47I don't even remember. But I just remember being like
- 4:50Oh my gosh, I am in love with you hungie and he's gonna be in
- 4:53something called a kdrama, like what is this?
- 4:56And so literally it was like one of the reasons why I got into it
- 5:00like the cage on the world in general was because I was just
- 5:03so into K-pop. I was just like, you know, to
- 5:06steal my little Middle School thing, listen to my cave off and
- 5:09then just got thrown into this world of romance and I was like,
- 5:12wow, okay, I'm ready for this ride and I've been on this ride
- 5:16for the rest of my life. So fantastic.
- 5:19Yeah, yeah, for me, 2009 was the year I graduated from high
- 5:23school and just to set the scene for people that are like, maybe
- 5:28on the younger side or don't realize what was happening in
- 5:312009, Barack Obama. Was inaugurated in 2009.
- 5:37What a trip. Yes.
- 5:39Parks and Rec the show. And the TV show Glee made their
- 5:44TV debuts in 2009. Yes.
- 5:48Damn. First year.
- 5:49Yes. Michael Jackson died in 2009.
- 5:55Yes let me see. Taylor Swift was still winning
- 5:59Country Music Awards. Wow, Slumdog Millionaire swept
- 6:04the Oscars that year Heath Ledger with I know and speaking
- 6:09of oscars Heath Ledger wins best supporting actor posthumously
- 6:13for his role as Joker in The Dark Knight.
- 6:15So this is the time period that we're talking about.
- 6:19We still have Harry Potter movies coming out, we still have
- 6:22Twilight Saga, movies coming out in theatres Avatar which just
- 6:27got a sequel not too long ago. The way of water.
- 6:30The first Avatar movie Released an 09.
- 6:33I'm telling you. It is the beginning of things
- 6:36because even Disney acquired Marvel in 2009.
- 6:40This is when you're beautiful comes out, right?
- 6:45This crazy year with all of this stuff happening.
- 6:48And all of these pop culture moments that people seem to
- 6:51forget happened in 09. So long ago, when when you said
- 6:56pandemic in 2009, people thought you meant that H1N1 swine flu
- 7:03Yes, that was the pandemic in 2009.
- 7:06So honestly, it was kind of nice to revisit not just for the
- 7:11Nostalgia the show, but just think back to, where the heck we
- 7:15were, as a society in 2009. Yeah, bring us back, honestly.
- 7:21I miss that era of my life. I was so young, so full of Hope.
- 7:29What a trip. I know, like, even in this show
- 7:30there is like scene. Whether like clubbing and the
- 7:33songs are playing. I was like jamming out.
- 7:36I was like this was so lit the day, right?
- 7:41I loved it. So yeah, what a great time it
- 7:44was a time. So this show is 16 episodes long
- 7:49and it had a director Hong, some chong and the assistant director
- 7:54was Park young-sun and he's directed things like 49 days and
- 7:59Miss Granny which are two more. Or well-known the to me, they're
- 8:03a little more well-known than some of the other work that the
- 8:05assistant director has done, I think, more than anything, the
- 8:08show was written by the Hong sisters, which is Hong da Moon,
- 8:15and hung meet on two sisters who are prolific screenwriters.
- 8:19And we kind of delve deep on there filmography and their
- 8:24screenplays on the Alchemy of souls episodes, which I ended up
- 8:28splitting into two parts, but yeah, that was their most recent
- 8:31thing. Alchemy of souls, how do you
- 8:33feel about Hong sisters, dramas, and they're writing in general?
- 8:38I don't know, I'm a sucker for the Hong sisters, like I I feel
- 8:43like I'm close to a playlist, sometimes they're very critical,
- 8:45things are like, well pothole here like this, that that, but
- 8:48like honestly, if I really just like go back to my roots, like
- 8:53the honk sisters, know how to hit us, what the emotions, what
- 8:56the, you know, the crazy out there storylines and I feel like
- 9:00they do get critiques. A lot because like, sometimes
- 9:02people say they, they reuse plotlines reuse tropes but I'm
- 9:06like, that's just like kdrama. Like, this is what kdramas
- 9:09about, you know, like Alchemy of Souls and then going down like
- 9:12hotel de luna. Also, iconic, current Odyssey
- 9:15iconic. Like so many of these, even
- 9:17from, like, way back in the day, like, sassy girl and 2005.
- 9:21I never even wash that kdrama and I've heard of it, you know,
- 9:23like these are iconic. So I feel that the Hong sisters
- 9:29know what they're doing and no no I love them at the end.
- 9:31Them. Okay.
- 9:33So I'm so glad you say that because we have differing
- 9:36opinions on the Hong sisters. I generally sort of dislike the
- 9:40way that they write things. I think they're good at
- 9:43balancing really melodramatic moments with comedic moments.
- 9:48I think that's what kind of brings people back is that
- 9:50you're not just wallowing, the whole episode.
- 9:54They have these lighter moments punctuated throughout and they
- 9:57are very good at physical comedy writing in some physical
- 10:01Physical comedy for the actors in obviously that's know.
- 10:06You can look at Alchemy of souls, you can look at hotel de
- 10:08luna. Korean Odyssey, it goes way
- 10:10back. That's a little bit of a
- 10:12signature for them and they love fantasy elements and they are
- 10:19sort of foundational. Like, I can't take this away
- 10:21from them, their foundational, 4K drama.
- 10:24And a lot of the tropes that we see, they were pioneering, or
- 10:28they were redefining and in specially in this show.
- 10:32I felt like revisiting it, they tried to subvert.
- 10:35A lot of the tropes like you would be like, oh they're about
- 10:38to kiss and it's like, oh no he moves her face out of the way or
- 10:42so like it's very there subverting a lot of things
- 10:46because the audience already has some expectations, maybe some
- 10:49that the Hong sisters created and some that they're just, you
- 10:52know, like still within the Wheelhouse of kdrama but I
- 10:57thought they was fun to see. But also this I don't feel Feel
- 11:02less the Sara Lee like I'm in love with any case.
- 11:05Any Hong sisters kdrama, if you feel me, like I appreciate what
- 11:09they've done but I'm not like, you know, I'm not waving the
- 11:13Hong sisters flag over here like like a lot of people are and
- 11:16that's fine. Like, everyone can have their
- 11:19own opinion, their own feelings toward things.
- 11:22If you love Alchemy of souls, I'm so happy for you.
- 11:26Like as a matter fact, very happy for you.
- 11:28Great keep it. It's yours for me.
- 11:31Not so much. And that's kind of how I wanted
- 11:34to wrap up the Hong sisters talk because I feel like it's a
- 11:38little touchy after I don't know if you were privy to like all of
- 11:42the Alchemy of souls hate that was around or like the toxicity
- 11:47of some of that fandom. Oh my God.
- 11:50Yeah yeah. So if you didn't like the show
- 11:53then I'm you were definitely privy to some of this.
- 11:58Nonsense online. But you know, everyone has
- 12:02their, their likes and dislikes and if you like honk sisters,
- 12:06dramas, they're not going anywhere, like keep watching.
- 12:09So I kind of think that this 2009 drama might might make some
- 12:17people a little weary of the Hong sisters just because of its
- 12:22age and we have talked about that.
- 12:25So this yes, Yes, so this show Stars POC Shanae as combing, the
- 12:31old / calming, I'm she's playing both roles the Twins and how do
- 12:37you feel about Pacini? Because oh man, so she's so
- 12:43iconic in her and itself, you know, like I feel like she was
- 12:46obviously my first kdrama and then she goes on and I feel like
- 12:50she goes from the very strong like, kdrama female lead when
- 12:56all the rom-coms. Now, I feel like she's delved
- 12:59into this new world, like watching her and call the call.
- 13:03I was like Blown Away by her like, change of, I guess, like
- 13:08Charisma almost like it's just, she's playing such different
- 13:10roles, you know, I think that her crying ability is freaking
- 13:15top-tier. If there's anyone I can count on
- 13:18and Decay Joe industry to be able to shed tears.
- 13:22It is huxton. It like she her Village do.
- 13:24That is like amazing. I'd say, if people haven't seen
- 13:28her in other kdramas, she is very different now than
- 13:32obviously in this kdrama like, just watching her act and this
- 13:36one, it's like, what? The pouty face and kind of the
- 13:39homes. Hopefully, not like, the not
- 13:41like Vibe it just like, it's very different.
- 13:45But overall I mean, I think I appreciate her because she was
- 13:48my first kdrama. Gal.
- 13:49I feel like I tried following her work afterwards just
- 13:53because, you know, you have that special connection with a
- 13:55kdrama, but I would say I definitely think I fell off or
- 13:59train, you know, probably around like a couple of years after
- 14:03this one. Yeah, no issue to her but it's
- 14:05just like but like some of the things got a little repetitive.
- 14:08So I've been churned into other kdrama actresses but so have a
- 14:12special place in my heart for her.
- 14:15That's so nice to hear. I don't think I ever put her
- 14:19necessarily on a pedestal. I will say that I watched this
- 14:24drama. You're beautiful.
- 14:26And I want to say in 2014 so wasn't in 2009, got you.
- 14:31And I think that I was starting to watch a bunch of POC Shanae
- 14:37dramas and it's one. I don't, I mean, I'll say, I'll
- 14:42say my, my first impressions and how I felt in 2014 watching the
- 14:46show, but passionate we mentioned her in her career, on
- 14:49The Heirs episode that was very interesting because if you
- 14:53juxtapose or she feels like Same thing as Lee Min-ho where yeah,
- 15:00she's not gone out of fashion and the way that she acts in the
- 15:04types of roles that she took are out of fashion, right?
- 15:08Like people wouldn't gravitate towards these kind of characters
- 15:11today, and yes, she's gained a lot of Acclaim, but then when
- 15:15you look at some of the stuff that made her famous, you're
- 15:17like, this is not that great, you know, and I feel like this
- 15:21is one of those roles were you. Like, I don't know, I can't tell
- 15:24if it's the Hong sisters influence, or if it's her, and
- 15:26the way that she's Saying, the character that makes me a little
- 15:30bit annoyed and her in The Heirs is the same thing.
- 15:35Like she that character had no personality and in my it
- 15:38probably had nothing to do at all with passion in her
- 15:41performance. It was just what was on this on
- 15:43the paper. But yeah, in this case she is
- 15:48irking me in different ways and again it's probably just what's
- 15:52on the on the paper. What's on the screenplay that
- 15:56she's Little bit childish in the show, she's a little bit
- 16:03bumbling in the show. She's very innocent and dense.
- 16:08And to a point where you're like, okay, this is like too
- 16:11much for one person to be this completely dense and like
- 16:19romantically handicapped at this point.
- 16:21So, this is Parks and yes, this is passionate in this drama and
- 16:25that's a little bit of the That really annoyed me.
- 16:29But like you said, the call, hashtag alive.
- 16:32My annoying, brother. I said this on the air is
- 16:34episode. I think, I like her movie work
- 16:38better than her cage. Rump work.
- 16:39I think that stands up way better over time.
- 16:42Then some of them, especially some of these older kdramas that
- 16:45made her famous. I'm like I can never carry watch
- 16:48that. So yeah, it's for I definitely
- 16:51think. The female lead aesthetic was so
- 16:54cringe back, like, back in the day.
- 16:57Now looking back right? As like we're you know, older
- 17:00we're adults. Now, we've been through whatever
- 17:02our lives and I'm just like, oh my gosh, like that's what like
- 17:06they were trying to portray as like this is what is attractive
- 17:10to met. Just being so quiet used and
- 17:13bumbling and clumsy. And like I don't like I feel
- 17:16like back in the day I also watched a lot of like anime like
- 17:18that kind of stuff too. And I feel like it was a similar
- 17:21messaging back in like the early 2000s like just like clumsy kind
- 17:26of adult Like really naive and like, I don't know, man.
- 17:30Like I feel like the stereotypes, it was just through
- 17:33trying so hard to make us all believe it.
- 17:35And I think I bought it, I don't know, I'll blank age almost for
- 17:38my lack of dating life when I was in Middle School because I
- 17:41was like, yeah, I want to be like really Dulce and clumsy and
- 17:45that's what people think are cute and it's like, no, that's
- 17:48not true. Like you should not be spilling
- 17:50things over yourself, like that is not like a cute little
- 17:52kitten. So I you have.
- 17:55Yeah, you have an absolute point there.
- 17:57I guess we can get a little more into that in a second.
- 17:59After we cover Jang, geun Suk who plays hon take young.
- 18:03He is our male lead. What, how do you feel about this
- 18:07guy? I haven't seen this guy in a hop
- 18:08in it. Yeah, I at the sounds kinda sad,
- 18:12but like I don't think I've seen any other kids drama, but he's
- 18:15in other than this one. I, I just like what I first was
- 18:20introduced his character, I just thought he was so mean and like
- 18:23I feel like he plays it to a tee, you know, just like well
- 18:26this smirk and Like that kind of like this facial expression but
- 18:30I'm happy to hear that he's coming back.
- 18:33I just I never really got into his like his character and his
- 18:37the actor himself but I'm happy to hear that.
- 18:39He's still got it. Yeah so he's got a comeback
- 18:43drama which is airing this year maybe even now it's called the
- 18:47bait, part 1 and 2 and it's just come back down.
- 18:51He hasn't done anything in like five years.
- 18:54So this is a big deal and I think, for me, I watched him in
- 18:59this and I watched him in like a couple like a couple of the
- 19:03things. I think, Marry Me Marry in 2010
- 19:06and love rain out. Have you seen love rain?
- 19:09I haven't no getting. So here's the plot of Love Rain
- 19:12really fast. Okay, so we're talking in the
- 19:1570s, a couple, which he plays the, the male lead in the 70s
- 19:20and what's her name. The one that can't act from
- 19:26Girls Generation Yoona. Oh okay, so it's him and Yuna in
- 19:32the 1970s they fall in love through circumstances.
- 19:34That's like The One That Got Away now, in the present day,
- 19:38their children fall in love with each other.
- 19:40They're playing the children now and it's this whole thing of
- 19:45like, will they won't they get together and act on their
- 19:47feelings because their parents have reconnected in the present
- 19:50day and it's like taboo because they could be step sing siblings
- 19:56this way. Yes.
- 19:57Yes, yes. So that is the plot of Lorraine
- 20:01and I was like, this is very Melody.
- 20:03I remember vividly watching this and thinking this is super
- 20:06melodramatic and I don't really get what the issue is.
- 20:08They're not related like any blood at all and it was
- 20:14frustrating and really weird. And so that was the end of me
- 20:17watching. Duncan sock on in anything.
- 20:20Oh man! Yes.
- 20:22So when I was looking up dramas that he'd been in, I'd be like
- 20:24okay Bellamy Royal Gambler, some stuff.
- 20:27Up until 20 to 2018 and now his comeback drama.
- 20:30And I thought let me just look at the comeback drama.
- 20:32If you scroll down to the next page in the dock guys.
- 20:37Hello. I've literally I thought this
- 20:40day I was like, hold on hold on. Maybe the fact that I didn't
- 20:44watch pretty much any of his work had to do with I just
- 20:47didn't find him that attractive which is really, really shallow
- 20:50of a thing to say but I just have to say like some people
- 20:53have types and some actors just work for some people and some
- 20:56factors. I just don't and he was one of
- 20:58those people that never had an appeal for me.
- 21:01And then I saw this, these screens stills of his latest
- 21:05drama, that's coming out this year and I was like, hold on,
- 21:07maybe he just needs a jab. It and has some facial hair and
- 21:11I was like, I was like I'm a changed woman.
- 21:14Do I need to watch this drama called The Bait?
- 21:17So, yeah, I am intrigued these photos are definitely selling
- 21:23me. So maybe you and I can talk
- 21:25about. Okay.
- 21:28I'm down, I'm down because when I literally was like, hold on,
- 21:32oh no. I'm in it because he just looks
- 21:36like an Amman, you know, like maybe it was just, he was to
- 21:40clean shaven and he just looked a little glossy and they gave
- 21:44him these crazy outfits. I mean, talk about the crazy
- 21:47outfits in, just your beautiful this show.
- 21:51I mean, how can I mean? He's like a freakin citizen of
- 21:56the All here in Hunger Games versus like a real honest-to-god
- 22:00person. So you know seeing him in this
- 22:03getup I think he's playing a detective in this new show,
- 22:07that's coming out this year in 2023.
- 22:09And I was like, hey I have I'd like to have a word because I'm
- 22:14sorry, I apologize for the way that I've treated you all these
- 22:18years anyway. So that's the man that's our
- 22:20male lead in the show and then we'll round it out with two
- 22:23people who I'm sure you're familiar with.
- 22:25We have a donkey AKA Jeremy and the show and he's from FT
- 22:30Island. Yes.
- 22:33And yeah. And we have Jung Yong hwa as she
- 22:36knew from CNBLUE, which seeing him on screen again, I was like
- 22:43Whiplash, like what year is it? It's been a minute.
- 22:47How do you feel about these guys?
- 22:49And what are some of the mother, or some of the other kdramas
- 22:53that you've seen them in? Besides, were beautiful?
- 22:56Yeah. You know, it's kind of Funny.
- 22:58So like to, you know, give the context again.
- 23:00I feel like FT Island was like doing their thing and then
- 23:03CNBLUE is kind of like new boy band of the era.
- 23:07A so it was kind of like a I don't know like it was a good
- 23:10mix of both of them coming together in a kdrama.
- 23:13So I was like 4 ft Island. Fans aka me at the time it was
- 23:18kind of like oh my gosh, new boy fan and then you get introduced
- 23:22to Jung yonghwa and you're like, okay, I'm on board.
- 23:26Look at what a music. Let's let's go.
- 23:27Now, so both of them. Absolutely.
- 23:29Love them. I, you know, I think both of
- 23:33them are my favorites in their respective bands as well.
- 23:36Like I think they're both great and they're both super talented.
- 23:38And I think the fact that they were band members in this show,
- 23:42it was just like everything you want it.
- 23:44Like it was like a friend thing. You know, that I just like got
- 23:46written up by itself is so great, but I will say, I
- 23:50actually did it fall out. You hungie as much as for the
- 23:52rest of his like kdrama stuff so like, yeah, I've seen too much
- 23:56of his His roles. I think I've seen Korean Odyssey
- 23:59but that was kind of it but I think you hot.
- 24:03Like I started watching his kdramas a lot more after this.
- 24:07So, heart strings, which came out with Park, seen a kind of
- 24:11was like the second lead love line that should have happened.
- 24:14So I definitely watch that right after and then like, yeah, I
- 24:18think recently he did sell your haunted house that like, kind of
- 24:21like one in a little bit, but there was also just like cooking
- 24:25movie that he was in. It's like a Chinese cooking.
- 24:28Quickly. So familiar.
- 24:29Yeah, I like I don't know, like if you go on YouTube and it's
- 24:32always like a popular clip because he's plays, like does
- 24:35really amazing chef and he does all these crazy chef things and
- 24:38like it's actually really, really fun.
- 24:40I if I find the name I'll tell you and week.
- 24:43Okay later but also a hilarious movie with him in it.
- 24:48But yeah I feel like both of them.
- 24:49This was like the biggest K job I've seen with both of them and
- 24:52then from there it was kind of like, you know, small things
- 24:56here and there. Yeah, so I really liked both of
- 25:01them in 2014 more than I did coming back to it.
- 25:05Especially dong Jung yonghwa, I thought he was a little bit, not
- 25:11a little bit, he was stiff like as a board.
- 25:14Yeah. In this in this show, but him
- 25:17and heartstrings is a, I mean, he's still pretty stoic, but a
- 25:20little looser and I think, I stopped watching him and stuff
- 25:26after marry him. If you dare, I If you seen that
- 25:29show, okay, it's one of the worst kdramas I've ever seen in
- 25:32my life. Really, in my life.
- 25:34It was terrible. It was terrible.
- 25:36Don't watch that show. So if it will actually watch it,
- 25:41and let me know if you agree that it's terrible.
- 25:44It was just horrendous, horrendous lie, written and it
- 25:48starred the female lead for rum princess hours.
- 25:53I forget her name, so familiar. Yeah.
- 25:57But she but she was a big name and then I was like, oh my God,
- 26:00it's her and this guy and I watched it bad for young key.
- 26:06I watched him in Bride of the century, which was one of those
- 26:08where he was playing like a chaebol and then he was going to
- 26:11marry this girl. But then something happened and
- 26:14they had to get a doppelganger to marry him instead.
- 26:18And the doppelganger was of course, super sweet, and he fell
- 26:22in love with her instead of like the real girl.
- 26:25So that's why it's called like bright as under.
- 26:27Anyway So love that Joe. I thought it was good and then
- 26:30modern farmer. I think he was also playing some
- 26:34like a Kpop idol and then it goes to the countryside.
- 26:37For some reason I didn't finish out when I dropped it, it was
- 26:40like really boring and I wasn't in the mood for it, but that's
- 26:43pretty much it for for these two.
- 26:46And I feel bad that again. I haven't really watched some of
- 26:49their other stuff. I've heard great things about
- 26:51sell your haunted house and I've had not finished a Korean
- 26:57Odyssey. Which is another Hong sisters
- 26:58drama. I think I dropped that one.
- 27:01And like, episode 5 or 6. I was like, hmm.
- 27:04No, yeah I think I couldn't get behind usagi.
- 27:08He was like really mean. I was like, that seems to be a
- 27:11common thing in the sisters never really really mean male
- 27:17lead and she just Falls for him anyway.
- 27:20And I was over it. So I thought he was just cruel.
- 27:23So I didn't finish that one anyway.
- 27:26All this to say we're The end of this, this intro bit.
- 27:31Please tell me. What did you do in returning to
- 27:34this 2009? Show your first kdrama ever.
- 27:38What did you think? What did you think of your
- 27:40beautiful? Yeah man.
- 27:43It's I totally agree that the timing is so important to
- 27:47understand because if I were to like write this assuming this is
- 27:53come out in 2023, it would be a very different score than
- 27:57whatever. Add it back in 2009 you know.
- 27:59There are so many things that were like more acceptable like
- 28:02so many more tropes and like I guess the general Vibe of
- 28:06kdramas was just so different back then but I do think just
- 28:11because of how ridiculous the show is and like even back then
- 28:16it wasn't a very serious kdrama and I feel like I'll like
- 28:19looking back like you don't have to try to think about it in a
- 28:21serious way. I still think it was very
- 28:23enjoyable, like I overall enjoyed watching it there is
- 28:27moments. Like got me laughing like out
- 28:29loud. Given the fact that there's
- 28:32still so many things, I was like, are we really doing this?
- 28:35Like, but like, at the same time, it was still really fun.
- 28:37So I'm really happy that you brought up this review and I
- 28:41think it was a great time to like, revisit such an old
- 28:44kdrama, and talk about it with you.
- 28:48Thank you for for being game to return to it.
- 28:51I know that if someone asked me to watch my first kdrama, again,
- 28:55I'd probably be like, I don't know.
- 28:56Are you sure that you You want to watch that Caterham so but
- 29:00this one happens to be quite iconic.
- 29:02It did it didn't do well at first like on broadcast and had
- 29:07mediocre ratings but then it gained a cult following when
- 29:10people started watching the drama online and I was like oh
- 29:13I'm one of these people that got the export of this drama and you
- 29:18know had it not been put online and people started raving about
- 29:24it we probably would just never return to it and wouldn't think
- 29:27anything. Of it.
- 29:28So it's pretty interesting to think of it, that way, it
- 29:32contributes to like the Holly wave, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:36For for me, I watch it in 2014, and I remember being in my first
- 29:40apartment and watching this at night and just, I remember being
- 29:44confused. You see how my eyebrows are
- 29:46furrowed right now? Like, I was watching it like
- 29:48that the whole time because I was like, do I love it?
- 29:51Or do I hate it? I can't tell.
- 29:53It's very old and even in C14. I thought it looked pretty
- 29:59pretty old and dated, of course, the production value is in high
- 30:02like most kdramas have a high production value today.
- 30:05It's a totally different time period.
- 30:07And again, I think I was a little more forgiving in 2014
- 30:09where I was like, you know it is what it is.
- 30:12Like it's a product of its time and these tropes are very are
- 30:16familiar for me so it's fine. I can dig my myself into it a
- 30:21bit but I do remember laughing at the first episode with You
- 30:27need a as a known and I was like, what is going on?
- 30:32It's going on, it's so wild. So I think I ended up liking it
- 30:38and I think I appreciated it more than anything.
- 30:40When I finished it in 2014 on re-watch.
- 30:45I was very, how do I put it? It was difficult for me to watch
- 30:50it and finish it and for some reason I was it was putting me
- 30:54to sleep. Oh, sometimes he's older.
- 30:57Kdramas when I returned to them. Like, I'm falling.
- 31:00I'm following he, he ha ha. And then I fall asleep, but and
- 31:04I'm like, how did I get here? I was fully awake a second ago
- 31:08and there's something about it. Maybe it's just comforting that
- 31:11I know what's gonna happen in a general sense.
- 31:13So I don't got to be, you know, reading everything so intently.
- 31:17But yeah. Maybe that's a positive, that
- 31:20it's sort of a shut your brain off and watch kind of show which
- 31:24a lot of older kdramas are there very long.
- 31:28Very light on plot. We said this about The Heirs
- 31:30thing, to The Heirs episode, where we were like, what exactly
- 31:34is the plot. Like, I don't think there is one
- 31:36because it's just kids that hate each other and are rich and they
- 31:39throw them together in school and like very my note things are
- 31:44happening to them and in this case it feels very similar in
- 31:48that. It's malt.
- 31:49Not giant, big set pieces and all of this Mayhem happening, a
- 31:56lot of Moving pieces, it's not like the glory and it's not
- 32:01like, you know, Little Women and all these trendy kdramas that
- 32:04are coming out in recent years where you're like, this is a
- 32:07plot. Yeah.
- 32:09This is not a plot. So I think is again, I was
- 32:16struck with this balance of like it's making me laugh.
- 32:18But I what cost, you know, and really annoyed with the male
- 32:24lead and the female lead pack shinae Just not aged well at
- 32:31all. What were some of the things I'm
- 32:33curious to know like that struck you as being woefully outdated
- 32:37more than other things. Like let's just set aside the
- 32:40fact that it's not filmed particularly well.
- 32:42They're their wardrobe is pretty heinous and the hair is a whole
- 32:50other discussion. What were some of the other
- 32:53things that you felt were really outdated?
- 32:56Yeah, I would say, Nowadays, like there's a lot more
- 33:00character that people put in. So they're kdrama people like
- 33:04it's like, you know, the story, The multi-dimensional Character.
- 33:08I feel like it's helped more. I don't people just pour about
- 33:11more emphasis in that these days.
- 33:13And I feel like the characters in this show are very, very
- 33:16one-dimensional. Like, you know, even like the
- 33:18second lead. Love lines like nowadays, you
- 33:21know, there's such strong compelling reasons for the
- 33:24second leads to have, you know, such a strong attraction.
- 33:28Towards the female lead in this one.
- 33:29It was like very minimal. It was like, they like you
- 33:33period. And so I feel like there's just
- 33:36a lot less flushing out that happened in this cage, AMA,
- 33:40compared to things now. And I definitely think like,
- 33:44just the the way that the male lead treats the female lead, I
- 33:48also feel like that whole dynamic is very outdated as
- 33:51well. Like it's funny because like
- 33:53friend and I kind of watched for his episodes and vitals like
- 33:56looking back. This is so bad.
- 33:57Bad because I feel like it's hot a whole era of Korean men that
- 34:00like you can just be really mean to the girl.
- 34:02You like and those people like you and it doesn't matter, it
- 34:05doesn't matter. And I'm like yeah that's so
- 34:07true. Like I don't really feel like
- 34:09that still exists and kdrama land like you know a little bit
- 34:12right? Just because it's still kind of
- 34:14fun. The enemies to Lover's type of.
- 34:16Yeah. But it's not just so blatantly
- 34:20mean and like it's just it's like a different level and they
- 34:23definitely give more back story for all of that versus in this
- 34:26one. I feel like it was just They
- 34:28struck a chord for like, oh this is how it's gonna be and then
- 34:31that was it. And they was just like groveling
- 34:34and angst to get away from that for the rest of the show.
- 34:37Absolutely. You have such a, you've touched
- 34:41on some really great things that I'm sure we can go into a little
- 34:44more detail in the spoiler section but absolutely the lack
- 34:48of character development is ridiculous in this show.
- 34:51Yeah, you're just kind of presented with these people.
- 34:54They have really one-dimensional personalities.
- 34:57Jeremy is This bubbly a Kyo like dude who love has loves a his
- 35:03dog Angelina Jolie and that's pretty much all there is to it.
- 35:07And each one has their own separate personality and it does
- 35:11feel like if you gave it a lot of credit you would think oh,
- 35:15they're making fun of the sort of roles in K-pop groups where
- 35:22they're like, oh this is the leader.
- 35:23This is so and so this is the Magna, this is, you know, all of
- 35:27Of these different where they try and make them super distinct
- 35:31personality wise, especially when they go on like talk shows
- 35:34and variety shows and they're like well this one's always got
- 35:37something crazy to say like this one's always the Loose Cannon.
- 35:39This was always very serious, you know.
- 35:42It's like It's a little bit much.
- 35:48I hear you. I honestly I don't think I can
- 35:51give them that much credit for it though.
- 35:54For some of these really OneNote characters.
- 35:57And the whole thing of like the male lead has to be mean and
- 36:03she's gonna fall for him anyway. I can't get behind that nowadays
- 36:08and that was something that really bothered me on this
- 36:11re-watch as well. Yeah, I know and I honestly will
- 36:17get into Some more details in a second.
- 36:20I do have a couple of fun facts for you the which I thought we
- 36:23should share. So did you notice everyone's
- 36:26driving an Audi in the show? That's true.
- 36:30That's true. I thought it was funny, so I
- 36:34looked it up several car companies offered to have their
- 36:37cars used in the drama, including, you know, the German
- 36:40automaker Audi. They introduced their Audi S4 on
- 36:44the miniseries and I thought this was a little bit odd
- 36:47because Is the only other time where I'm like, wow Audi's was
- 36:52in Iron Man. And this is literally the year
- 36:55after Iron Man like was in theater.
- 36:59So I was like, okay not long after Audi kind of made a global
- 37:03Resurgence with the Audi product placement.
- 37:06In the Iron Man movie. So it kind of like track but I
- 37:09was like wow I've never seen an Audi in another cage.
- 37:13Rama it felt a little out of place.
- 37:15I don't know. Yeah, that's true.
- 37:17Now that you mention it. I do.
- 37:18Yeah. I feel like they're I mean, I
- 37:20don't know. They always do the car product
- 37:21placements and these cake, right?
- 37:23I'm not a big car person. So I'm like, I'm just like, oh,
- 37:26that's a cool car and then just focus on something, that's a
- 37:29cool car. No.
- 37:30Usually I feel like I'm the same way but then sometimes if I see
- 37:34something that looks unusual in Korea like obviously if it's a
- 37:38him that I am like okay yeah that's a Korean car or something
- 37:42to that effect but an Audi I was like Audi thanks.
- 37:47So that Was a little bit attention, it caught my
- 37:50attention. Let's talk about the OST and the
- 37:53music in the show because this is a big part of This show and
- 37:59this era of kdrama where you had these musical kdramas like, Shut
- 38:04Up Flower Boy Band and this one, and oh my God, what was the
- 38:11band? The Other Dream High was another
- 38:13one. There was so many, like, musical
- 38:15kdramas back in the day that spoofed the Kpop industry.
- 38:20And for this one, I was like, I think I like the songs.
- 38:26Did you did you feel the same way?
- 38:28Oh my gosh. I think I would listen to this
- 38:31OST, like casually like many years honestly.
- 38:35After I want to skate Jam of that was just like on my, I
- 38:39don't know, iPod Shuffle or whatever.
- 38:40It looks like, I love this OST, I assume just because they were
- 38:48like, this is the heir of kdramas were like, any moment
- 38:50has a nose T associated with it, you know like you know exactly
- 38:53how to feel in that moment based off what songs.
- 38:55He's playing so like yep, it was so overdone but I still think it
- 39:00was like it was still so good like it wasn't like overplayed.
- 39:04I was just like I was feeling it, I love the OST.
- 39:06I think like a lots of Sun. So promise that's the one with a
- 39:11hoagie and you ha. I was like that was my freaking
- 39:14jam. It was like the perfect combo of
- 39:16FT Island CNBLUE. You know, it's such a good song
- 39:20and then obviously the more emotional ones like without
- 39:24words and I love darling. The lyrics obviously reflect
- 39:28the, you know, the main leads feelings and oh my God, it was
- 39:31so, it was so well done. I'm just I'm such a sucker for
- 39:35these like old school like music heavy kdramas.
- 39:38I feel like they're just, I don't know.
- 39:40They have a special place in my heart so I absolutely love those
- 39:43too. Yeah.
- 39:44I think they kind of fell by the wayside and now they're making a
- 39:47comeback and there's way more now than like, you know, ever
- 39:51before I feel like I was the one that I watched it.
- 39:55I was like, oh, This isn't so bad and then I looked online.
- 39:57Everyone hated it. Only if it's imitation.
- 39:59Have you seen that one with the sf9 guys?
- 40:03And the guy from you case? No I don't think.
- 40:06Okay it's got like modern-day not modern day but like
- 40:10present-day K-pop stars in it and I thought it was pretty good
- 40:15and then everyone was like this one sucked and I was like oh
- 40:18sorry I liked it whoops yeah whoops anyway so that one came
- 40:23to mind but there's more there's even more The concert footage in
- 40:28the show, they actually performed a mini concert and
- 40:32about 25,000 fans showed up, dude, I know and they performed
- 40:38promise and still Duncan suck, also, saying goodbye and what
- 40:42should I do? And then pakshi naysaying her
- 40:45characters theme song. Lovely day.
- 40:47So that's where you got all of that footage that's like,
- 40:49interspersed throughout. And, oh, we're going to do
- 40:51another showcase and like this, they pull from this same concert
- 40:55that the I did. Yeah.
- 40:57So I found that really, really fun and interesting that they
- 41:01actually did have all of these people and I don't know.
- 41:05I like when they do this, it works every time for me where
- 41:08they have like a bunch of people at a real venue and they're
- 41:12singing the songs and they're actually performing and it feels
- 41:15very believable. And some credit lends, some
- 41:19credibility to the show. So I was like when they do that
- 41:22like the movie A Star is Born. Does that too like they
- 41:24commandeered some Music thankful for.
- 41:28Yeah, festivals and shows and then they played like music from
- 41:31the movie. And I think I just recently,
- 41:34found out for that one. They didn't end up like
- 41:37broadcasting, the song people, just were reacting to silence
- 41:41because he didn't want the songs to get out in the public and
- 41:44have it be circulating online before the movie came out.
- 41:46So I was like, well, that's even more awkward.
- 41:49And people were still vibin and they were like, oh my God, it's
- 41:52Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. So I don't think that's what
- 41:55Happened here. I think it was just, you know,
- 41:58they were actually playing live and of course, two out of the
- 42:01three. Angel members are real
- 42:03musicians, so it helps it helps for sure.
- 42:07And I think it actually added for the, the scenes that they
- 42:10did show like at the very, I don't want to say too many
- 42:13spoilers but then like, you know, there is a slum scenes or
- 42:17at least. Yeah, door.
- 42:18I was like, yeah, important that, everyone's reactions are
- 42:21genuine, and I was like, I was so happy that they had a real
- 42:24audience because it made me I feel like this is real, you
- 42:26know, these people actually care about the artists and it just
- 42:30adds to the story line. Absolutely.
- 42:33So I think that it's high time that we get into the spoilers
- 42:36section. So if you don't care at all
- 42:39about spoilers, keep listening, or if you want to watch the show
- 42:43and then come back, you can do that too.
- 42:45But we'll be back right after this.
- 42:54You want to come in, all right. So, we talked a lot about the
- 42:57music, the OSD, the cast house, some of the tropes and some of
- 43:01the porch rails were really dated.
- 43:03But now we're in the spoiler section and so, anything goes
- 43:07Jenny, did you have a space where you wanted to start here
- 43:12or I think? Maybe because you mentioned the
- 43:16second male lead and we didn't cover that so much in the
- 43:19non-spoiler section. Let's talk about the other Angel
- 43:23member. She knew and Jeremy and how big
- 43:25Also, just magically fall in love with boxing and sounds
- 43:31good. So I will say that the second
- 43:35leads for so I feel like this is a one of those K.
- 43:38Jamas. So we actually had to Second
- 43:40leads, not just the one Association who he was, I was
- 43:44like really on his train and like I don't give him the fact
- 43:48that like it was really random the way he started loving her
- 43:51and everything but like you know when I first watched it I was
- 43:54like completely sold it. In the second time around, I was
- 43:57like, okay, fine. I like I'll buy it and I thought
- 43:59that his little date where he's like kind of behind her in
- 44:02myeongdong the whole time. You know seeing her that may
- 44:06scream sounds like I freaking love you sinner.
- 44:09But after that this was so downhill because man's was like
- 44:15talking in riddles, he was like oh this is one girl that I have
- 44:19feelings for and she doesn't know and this girl and I'm like
- 44:23I was like so frustrating I know.
- 44:25Please just give it to her straight, dude.
- 44:28What are you doing? And then like you know he would
- 44:30get upset because she would like blow her off because she would
- 44:32have no idea what the context was and then he would just be
- 44:35all like pouty by himself and I'd be like Andrew please likely
- 44:40do something. This is getting so frustrated.
- 44:43The I think I want to root for you.
- 44:44You're obviously you know a nice guy as opposed to the mainland
- 44:48who's just like super mean to her at.
- 44:51Like I just I wanted to root for him but you know it's especially
- 44:54the second time. Watching it.
- 44:56I was like at a certain point. I was like dude you dug your own
- 44:59grave? Like you're just gonna have to
- 45:00deal with this. Like she's not gonna go for you,
- 45:02you're just not communicating and like the reasons tree like
- 45:06not communicating, just don't make enough sense.
- 45:08So I'm sorry buddy. The math isn't math and for
- 45:12seeing though because like my man's blue like a 30-point lead,
- 45:17he knew she was a girl before. Take you on did.
- 45:20Yeah. And he was very sweet and looked
- 45:23out for her. He had this amazing young The
- 45:26like you said, where he's falling behind her and like
- 45:29calling her and saying, like, oh, what do you want for
- 45:31dessert? And it's like it's super cute
- 45:34and he just decides to project his feelings onto her and
- 45:40convinced himself, that she will be receptive to his feelings.
- 45:44And never actually confesses and never gives her a chance to, to
- 45:51reciprocity or reject him or anything.
- 45:53It's always like in The Ether. And he's miscommunicating.
- 45:57He's speaking in riddles like you said like what the what the
- 45:59hell is the yoda-like thing that he's doing here?
- 46:03Yeah. It's very frustrating to watch
- 46:05him get jealous. When it can actually be fixed.
- 46:10Like he can fix the situation quite easily and he's so
- 46:14confusing. I just don't like how he was.
- 46:16Like, yeah. I have a he like insinuated that
- 46:22he had a girlfriend and then oh, And apologize to my girlfriend
- 46:29for The Making Believe making everyone believe that you're my
- 46:33girlfriend had to do this like down and dirty.
- 46:35When you just almost got found out in the Press convert, it was
- 46:39like this whole thing and yeah, he gets upset with her when she
- 46:42stands him up and he does he's like was going to stand her in
- 46:46front of a mirror and be like the woman that I was like what
- 46:51the hell is this? It is so she is so stupid.
- 46:55--Pid guid, right? Mmm-hmm.
- 46:58Why would he do this? When he, he knows her.
- 47:01He knows that she's clumsy. He knows is, she's dense.
- 47:03He knows, she's innocent. She's really unexperienced,
- 47:08right? Not just in life, but in
- 47:11Romance, especially so like what makes him think that he can like
- 47:14start getting cute with it? Yeah.
- 47:16And she would read it. It doesn't make sense.
- 47:19It's like, he blew it. He absolutely blew it, not that
- 47:23she would have gone with him and, you know, he Would have
- 47:26worked out. He was very firmly.
- 47:28The second male lead, and he didn't necessarily pose any
- 47:30threat to, like the mail. The main couple, but absolutely
- 47:35frustrating to watch him. On the other hand, Jeremy is a
- 47:39delight. I love this character.
- 47:43I think he's adorable and in some ways he's like a better
- 47:47match for at least, he matches her energy, I would say, because
- 47:53he's again, very simple, he's very Be kind and childlike, as
- 47:58well likes to have a good time, always throwing congratulation
- 48:02parties for everybody. He's so cute and the dog, I
- 48:06mean, how can you say no to the dog, Angelina Angie?
- 48:11So when, when Jeremy finds out that she actually likes, pick
- 48:16Young, It's a huge blow for him and he rides his bus, which I
- 48:22love the bus thing that he introduced to her.
- 48:25Because she was having, she had a whole.
- 48:27I forget which emotional Outburst breakdown that she had,
- 48:32but he was like, look, why don't you come on this bus with me and
- 48:36he introduces her to his bus, which is an empty bus line?
- 48:41Then takes about an hour to go, it's full circuit, the full
- 48:45route. And in that hour, he can cry.
- 48:47And he can have this privacy alone time for him to sort out
- 48:51his feelings. And by the time he gets off the
- 48:52bus, an hour later, everything sorted and he's back to normal
- 48:55like quote-unquote normal and it's just this this Sanctuary
- 49:01for him and he introduces her to this.
- 49:03It's a great moment when he does that but then when he finds out
- 49:06that she's she's dating the other member he goes on the city
- 49:10bus again. And I love that like full circle
- 49:13moment was, like, why are you on my bus?
- 49:15This is my bus. I had like, told you about it.
- 49:17Why can't you leave me alone? And she just sits there, there's
- 49:20not much the function, it does in that moment, but he does a
- 49:23really nice. Have a really nice moment here.
- 49:26It's a really nice performance where he is distraught, he's
- 49:30crying. He does does the broadcast on
- 49:33the phone and sings. This children's song, it's very
- 49:36touching and you feel for the guy.
- 49:38Yeah, you know, I okay, let me talk about Jeremy Kyle.
- 49:42Okay. I freaking love Jeremy.
- 49:45I think from the moment that he Fell in love with me.
- 49:49Me know, right. And she's just like struggling
- 49:51because he's like I this is a man and I'm in love with a man,
- 49:55I guess I'm gay now. Like he's in a state like
- 49:58struggling with that the entire like 10 episodes where he's just
- 50:01like, you know what, like I guess if I love him, then I do
- 50:05like, he's just like needs of makes peace with it finds out.
- 50:08He's a girl and he's like so happy.
- 50:10He's like, oh my gosh. Like I I don't have to worry
- 50:12about my sexuality. Like, this is a normal romance
- 50:15for me now, like so happy. And then the city bus scene or
- 50:19man's breaks down. I remember, I was like watching
- 50:23this at night in 2009 and I was like, sobbing in front of my
- 50:28desk because I was watching online and I was like, I don't
- 50:30know. So young at the time, right?
- 50:32And I was like, legitimately crying so hard at that scene
- 50:37with Jeremy in the bus because I felt for Jeremy more than I did
- 50:42for shenmue for this entire, like series.
- 50:44Like, I felt like Jeremy deserved just as much Does the
- 50:48second male lead as soon as you did and he was like always so
- 50:51respectful and but also was like very communicative about his
- 50:55emotions and I was just like and then when he did his breakdown
- 50:59from such a happy character to that, I was like I was
- 51:02distraught as a child watching this show and like, even
- 51:05re-watching it like I was like, how is it getting emotional?
- 51:08So like I love to Jeremy as a. Secondly.
- 51:12Like the whole thing was written really well for him.
- 51:15Yeah, I agree completely. And you touched on something
- 51:18that I forgot to bring up in the non spoilery section, but holy
- 51:20hell. So let's talk about the queer
- 51:23coding. And the fact that these gender
- 51:25benders from back in the day, we're like, the precursor to the
- 51:29BL dramas that we have prevalent today, which are really great.
- 51:34And I can't wait to dive deep on some of those.
- 51:36But like, honestly, the fact that Jeremy's questioning his
- 51:40sexuality throughout much of the first half of the show is like a
- 51:43huge deal and he just comes to terms.
- 51:47He I guess I just like me. No, I mean yeah.
- 51:50And that's all there was to it. Like, he's very, I mean, he's
- 51:53asking some big questions here. None of the other guys having to
- 51:57are having to deal with this and he's like one step ahead.
- 52:00Like, do I like, guys now, yeah, he's very scared about his
- 52:06growing feelings toward mean them and when he finds out that
- 52:09she's a girl who's very relieved because it just kind of confirms
- 52:13that he's not, he's not gay but honestly, Lee.
- 52:18It could, he was in that direction anyway.
- 52:20Like, he was like, I like this person as a person.
- 52:24Yeah, period. So it's really refreshing
- 52:27refreshing. Pretty Progressive.
- 52:29And again, a lot of these gender Benders have this element to
- 52:32them like coffee prince, and Secret Garden.
- 52:34And the swaps and things that people, I think the other one To
- 52:39the Beautiful You, which is the sports romance where she got
- 52:42like a ghost and takes her brother's spot in a sports
- 52:45college. I think they In Vibe you saying?
- 52:48Yeah, and again, I'm not knocking the whole she's going
- 52:53masquerading as her brother because this is Tale As Old As
- 52:56Time. Okay?
- 52:56Shakespeare did it Twelfth Night?
- 52:58All right, it's old everyone does especially with the twins
- 53:03thing. That's yes, straight Twelfth
- 53:05Night, right? Hmm.
- 53:08I think that it's fun to go back and think, like, what were, what
- 53:13were people thinking, how are people may be feeling about this
- 53:17back? In the day and I think more than
- 53:18anything. It's a way to get some
- 53:22Progressive forward-thinking in a pill that people can swallow.
- 53:27Because this is Jeremy, is a very fun, charismatic character,
- 53:31and he's sitting here like dealing with his feelings and
- 53:34it's comical, like people just laugh at it.
- 53:37But in the back of their minds, I mean they have to be wondering
- 53:40like, oh my God. Like is he, who knows?
- 53:43Yeah, so it's very interesting and I don't know if you Had any
- 53:47thoughts about some of these storylines?
- 53:51That now we don't we don't really have any more because we
- 53:55just go straight to the source which is, you know, be Ells and
- 53:58girl loves stories as well. Yeah, no, I think it's super
- 54:02important that they did that because like, I don't know, like
- 54:05I've never had to go through that myself, right?
- 54:07But I'm sure it is one of those moments where you're like, hmm,
- 54:09like you start questioning yourself and it is like a
- 54:11struggle that you have to go through delay, come to terms
- 54:14with it, but I totally agree with Jeremy's character where he
- 54:17was Like I think they painted him as such like a not like it
- 54:22just like as such a like a happy positive person that it was like
- 54:26he just was able to reach that conclusion.
- 54:29And you know, along the way they obviously painted a lot of more
- 54:32like comical kind of like scenario driven things just to
- 54:35make it more lighthearted. But like at the end of the day
- 54:38like when he is on the bus the first time with me Nam and he's
- 54:41like for this hour, I will just like you and he like comes to
- 54:46that conclusion and like States it I was like that's a big
- 54:49that's a big step, you know? Like for justice guy that like
- 54:52come to conclusion to so II do agree like I think it's really
- 54:56important that they they kind of like touched on some of these
- 55:00like transitioning moments back then.
- 55:04And yeah I'm sure like will see some of that you know, in
- 55:07today's world as well. But it was.
- 55:09Yeah, it was cute. The way that they had framed it
- 55:11in this kdrama. Mmm.
- 55:13Absolutely. I feel like just last word on it
- 55:16I just Eel-like and nowadays, we'd rather not that we'd
- 55:20rather, but the stories are a little more serious in nature
- 55:23and they're not like rom-com esque, and so light.
- 55:27And fluffy like, consider either one class which has a trans
- 55:32character in it and that was not played for Laughs that much in
- 55:37that show at all. It was very much, a serious
- 55:40social commentary on Korea and, you know, the state of the lgbtq
- 55:45community. So it was It's so interesting to
- 55:49see how just like a few years later, we're getting these kind
- 55:52of Stories versus Jeremy and his struggle in the first 10
- 55:55episodes paired with all of the other hijinks that happens with
- 55:59these characters. You have this one light cute
- 56:01character, people love him as it is and he's got this little
- 56:05struggle, what he's doing with which is actually pretty
- 56:08important for sure. So I like that.
- 56:11I think lossing I want to say on the second leads is I will say I
- 56:15was really disappointed that the And that we didn't get like our
- 56:18Union between mean, mm. You know mean yo and the second
- 56:22leaves like it was literally I mean the last episode was
- 56:26basically everyone telling take him like Hey figure it out buddy
- 56:31like you gotta just put your pride aside and get it right but
- 56:35at the very end like we get like the big Grand gesture between
- 56:38the main love line. But then like there's I feel
- 56:40like there's a lot of friendships along the way
- 56:42between mean um and the second two guys and it just stopped
- 56:45that like we never really saw All that part of it.
- 56:48And I was like, oh, I would have loved to just see them all
- 56:50actually still be friends because they spent a lot of time
- 56:53together and sure there was like these romantic feelings, but I
- 56:56still feel like there was a lot of friendship things.
- 56:58I was going on to. So I wish that I had gotten
- 57:00that. At the end, you make an
- 57:02excellent point that the ending doesn't really bother with
- 57:05wrapping up her friendship with the other Angel members, this
- 57:10other lie to others, secondary leads and it's a bit of a shame
- 57:15because it's not It isn't just about the romance like you said,
- 57:19it is about the friendship that you forged with them and how
- 57:21they came to truly care for her. We do get like, even in other,
- 57:26like Boys Over Flowers, we get an ending with all ff4, and come
- 57:31Dundee. And it's like, okay, we have
- 57:33like, we know what happens to all of them.
- 57:35We know that how her relationship is with all the
- 57:37members still. Yeah.
- 57:40And we don't get this kind of moment with her and the boys, we
- 57:44just got it with her and Young. Yeah, which is a bit.
- 57:49I mean Yeah, it's a quibble but I agree with it completely.
- 57:57Let's talk about the male lead. So we already said that.
- 58:01He's like mean, he's a prickly personality and she is very
- 58:07childlike as we said before. And what is this?
- 58:12Like, I, we talked about this briefly in the mr.
- 58:16Sunshine episode, where, what does it say that?
- 58:20Is it Is it subscribing to some sort of like Purity Concept in
- 58:24the Korean Society, where you have these very childlike egg
- 58:30yolk inexperienced, obviously virginal female leads, and then
- 58:36you have these really mean, grumpy, male leads and they do
- 58:41everything wrong, they make every mistake, they say, all the
- 58:44wrong words that they still end up together.
- 58:46So, I don't know, I think it's the same thing like mr.
- 58:52Sunshine's way more recent, but you know, that was also with the
- 58:56added bonus of, he's much older than her.
- 58:58There's a giant age Gap and the female lead is much younger.
- 59:03She's in her 20s. So, I don't know.
- 59:07In this case, they take it a step further because she's a nun
- 59:11and like training to be a nun. And it's very much the sound of
- 59:14music all over again or she's catching feelings.
- 59:17You don't know what to do. She's scared and she's doing all
- 59:21these really crazy, ridiculous things.
- 59:23She's doing the pig face being, I was over it.
- 59:27I was over at the second time she did I was like, where does
- 59:30this is too much every time I cute anymore, lat, I'm sorry.
- 59:38I think like I don't know, this is like a common Trope.
- 59:40I socially that was like bigger. I think before like back then
- 59:45with like yeah your kdramas I will say they always try to
- 59:48redeem the male lead in some way and sometimes they succeed but
- 59:53like most of the time. They don't like, right?
- 59:56Like I'm sorry taking. I'm like sorry, you have really
- 59:59bad mommy issues. Like she seems like a really
- 1:00:02terrible person but like yeah, it also doesn't justify like
- 1:00:06one. Thing happening in your past for
- 1:00:08you to be just an asshole for the rest of your life, you know.
- 1:00:10Like that's like I just feel like they always try to do that
- 1:00:14with the male leads and like I don't know, probably when I was
- 1:00:17younger when I was sort of watching this, I bought it.
- 1:00:19I was like, yeah, you know, sad boy, sad, boys can do bad things
- 1:00:22but like now that I'm older, it's like no, like you got it.
- 1:00:25Like if you have problems go find help.
- 1:00:28Like, don't take it out on this innocent female who's just
- 1:00:31trying to be nice to you. And like, yeah, something that's
- 1:00:33like frustrating is like, you know, Miss always.
- 1:00:36So nice and even when she does the nicest things, I feel like
- 1:00:39taking is like really rude about it, like, there is a scene
- 1:00:42where, like, on his birthday, you know, he's like he has this
- 1:00:44whole confrontation with the mom.
- 1:00:46The mom forgets his birthday. So he goes back to the recording
- 1:00:48studio and he's like really sad. She sees it and she's literally
- 1:00:52like running to the convenience store trying to like buy him
- 1:00:54water, replace the life and do like the nicest things for this
- 1:00:58guy and literally he confronts her and he's like like did you
- 1:01:02cause another problem again or at least know something along
- 1:01:04those lines. And I was like, yeah.
- 1:01:06Like really, you know, just like be nice and they try to show the
- 1:01:10kind side of him and I get that, that's what the drama writers.
- 1:01:14And, you know, they tried to make it seem like he's a nice
- 1:01:17guy with a bad boy like outside, but like, sometimes it just
- 1:01:21doesn't fly after like that many episodes, you know.
- 1:01:24And like, I don't know, going back, like, like, I feel like
- 1:01:28the rough, like exterior. Like, sometimes you just need to
- 1:01:31drop that earlier on and not on the very last episode for us at
- 1:01:35them be like, okay, We're like rooting for the couple so I
- 1:01:38don't know. That was always like a weird
- 1:01:40part like even when the first watch it, so now, like
- 1:01:42re-watching, I feel like the main lead.
- 1:01:44A couple romance was always like a little bit like hard to
- 1:01:47swallow because of how quickly he can be.
- 1:01:51Yeah, he's super unpleasant. He's rude.
- 1:01:54He's constantly making wig out like he's always like, why is he
- 1:01:58always doing that face? The pouty face, the angry pouty
- 1:02:01face. He's not nice.
- 1:02:05And there's no reason for her to to like him to fall for him,
- 1:02:11he's male again, I think that The the the fact that it's
- 1:02:17written by a woman is really annoying to me to women, right?
- 1:02:21Is that you, you, they perpetuating this, this Trope,
- 1:02:25this this cliche that she's just going to fall for him, no matter
- 1:02:27what. And I don't see why I don't
- 1:02:32really care about his mommy issues.
- 1:02:35And the entire backstory, the fact that the Hong sisters tried
- 1:02:38to get us to believe that maybe they were siblings, and would
- 1:02:43dick you'll get out. Out with that nonsense, which we
- 1:02:47again we had way more of that back in the day was like, oh
- 1:02:50they kind of fall for each other.
- 1:02:51Then it's like, hold the phone. They might be siblings.
- 1:02:55I don't understand why they need to do this to us emotionally.
- 1:02:59Like now, I just feel achy about it, flaky behind offices.
- 1:03:03And I'm like, I don't need to feel this way like so I'll try
- 1:03:06to make them related. I hated that.
- 1:03:09I still do gross. I hate it.
- 1:03:13Yeah, so things like that. And then it just got even more
- 1:03:16complicated. The backstory.
- 1:03:19I don't care. So, his stress, the fact that he
- 1:03:23can't work out. His trauma is very frustrating
- 1:03:26to me because it's not like she doesn't have trauma, she has
- 1:03:30trauma, but she's not a dick. So I don't get why it's okay for
- 1:03:36him and not, okay, for her. Something else that made me
- 1:03:39upset was that she was, I don't know what the word is, but she
- 1:03:43was always putting herself down. And she was like, oh yeah, I
- 1:03:47won't be a bother. Don't worry, I'll stay away from
- 1:03:49you. I'm not going to cause any
- 1:03:50issues. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 1:03:53And he was very arrogant and prideful and wouldn't apologize
- 1:03:58when he knew he did something wrong or said something mean and
- 1:04:02it was just him doing very tiny gestures to try and make up for
- 1:04:07it or show the audience that he cares.
- 1:04:09And again it's not enough, it's really toxic and I don't like
- 1:04:15Like how she is constantly trying to make up for wrongs
- 1:04:19that she didn't do? And yes, yes she's clumsy but
- 1:04:24like if you spill a glass of water, like there's nothing like
- 1:04:27what what else you want to do? She's gonna clean it up and say,
- 1:04:30sorry. And that's fine.
- 1:04:31Yeah, but it was on an endless loop throughout the show and,
- 1:04:37you know, I just, I think we challenge shows more than then
- 1:04:42this now, right? We don't kind of let this be the
- 1:04:47end-all be-all of a show. And again, that's the problem.
- 1:04:51L'm I guess what the show is that there's not much plot and
- 1:04:54this is like the conflict. Is them just having these little
- 1:04:58little arguments and little things and she's constantly
- 1:05:02losing things and finding things like the hair clip thing.
- 1:05:06I got the hair clip like third time or whatever.
- 1:05:10She loses that hair clip. I was like girl just throw it
- 1:05:12away. Oh my God.
- 1:05:15We are over there clip now you know, like and I totally agree
- 1:05:19with you where it's like I feel like She has a lot of like,
- 1:05:23self-esteem issues, right? And I'm sure it's just she has
- 1:05:25like a pretty rough pass so like maybe that's what feeds into it
- 1:05:29but like it does suck that. He never really brings her up,
- 1:05:32you know? It's just like I agree nowadays
- 1:05:35like we challenged these things a lot more waddling like
- 1:05:38probably back then when we watch it was like fine.
- 1:05:40This was just normal like you did think about it.
- 1:05:42But yeah like dude looking at this a second time it's like
- 1:05:46just because you make your really cute stuffed doll with
- 1:05:49like like a pig nose on a rabbit.
- 1:05:51Stuff like that doesn't mean that you're actually being kind
- 1:05:54to hurt, you know. It's like we, as viewers can see
- 1:05:58you care. But like, you need to be better
- 1:06:00about communicating that because this is not the right way to
- 1:06:03handle relationship. So I totally get you.
- 1:06:06Like they, she is very down on herself and like everyone around
- 1:06:11her. Praise on that.
- 1:06:12And it's just, it's not a, its it is pretty toxic, like, even
- 1:06:16like the code Uncle good, people like the manager guy, you know,
- 1:06:20he's like you That to his Advantage.
- 1:06:23I mean, obviously the actress. Hey, she's like, you know, she's
- 1:06:28just freaking pokin holes all up in her self-esteem and we can
- 1:06:31get into them later. But like yeah, I just it sucks
- 1:06:34that even the main Loveline, the male lead just doesn't seem to
- 1:06:39really help her self-esteem and lift her up.
- 1:06:42It's just, you know, all this back-and-forth of like favors
- 1:06:45and, you know, that kind of stuff, which is not the best way
- 1:06:48to start a relationship, but I guess it worked for them.
- 1:06:51So, yeah, speaking of their relationship.
- 1:06:54What did you think of the overuse of the star analogy?
- 1:06:59Oh, my gosh. Robbed.
- 1:07:00Our okay. Are you gonna hate me for this?
- 1:07:02But I kind of loved it. Oh my God, it's so cheesy.
- 1:07:07But it was perfect for that time, you know, like I hated it,
- 1:07:11but I loved it. You know what I mean?
- 1:07:13It was like so over you. Is, it was so like gross, at a
- 1:07:17certain point we were like really, like I can't see you in
- 1:07:20the dark. I can see you in the light.
- 1:07:21Like, all of those. It's so overdone, but I don't
- 1:07:25know, man, 09 kdramas, like these overuse tropes.
- 1:07:29Like I kind of the cheesy side of me is like, oh, I love it.
- 1:07:34We gooey like just like let's let's love each other.
- 1:07:37Like we're stars and the star necklace and you're my star,
- 1:07:40your mind. Oh God, I kind of loved it.
- 1:07:44I'm sorry. I think I loved it when they
- 1:07:46first did it, which I think was an episode 7.
- 1:07:49They get lost in the woods. Woods.
- 1:07:52Yeah, something at night is night blindness, which Allah I
- 1:07:55guess yelling weakness. Yeah, one weakness.
- 1:07:57He has night blindness and he can only see the moon.
- 1:08:02She calls the moon, a star, and then he corrects her, which is
- 1:08:06like, again, like to shut up. Like, it's don't have to
- 1:08:09correct. Every time she says something
- 1:08:10slightly wrong. She says, even if the moon is
- 1:08:13not a star, the Moon is useful. Mmm.
- 1:08:16She ends up saying that I'm like the moon that's just clinging to
- 1:08:19you. Who is like the And he says, the
- 1:08:23moon isn't useless, no matter how many other stars are are at
- 1:08:26night. All I can see is the moon, which
- 1:08:28is like, it's very Swoon worthy. Basically saying, all I see is
- 1:08:34you, hmm. Which is fine.
- 1:08:36Then they beat a frickin dead horse.
- 1:08:40Yeah, with this star analogy over and over and over, and
- 1:08:44over. Oh I can't see my star.
- 1:08:46Oh I'm unable to see my star right now.
- 1:08:49Oh my star shining so bright and like shut.
- 1:08:52Oh my God. I hated it because they just
- 1:08:55they did they overdid it? Like to be quite honest with
- 1:08:58you, if they had just referred to it one or two more times at
- 1:09:02really good points throughout the rest of the show, I would
- 1:09:04been totally fine with it, but the fact that the get, it was
- 1:09:06like every episode, she's referring to him as a star, he's
- 1:09:10referring to her as the star, the moon, the sun, whatever, and
- 1:09:13I could not deal with it. I was very I mean, maybe I'm
- 1:09:20just colder now than I was in 2014 but I was like, oh my God
- 1:09:24so much I get, you know, like I totally understand where you're
- 1:09:27coming from. Uh, agreed.
- 1:09:29That it was 100% over adopt, but I feel like the o9k JAMA things
- 1:09:34are just over done from the acting to the osts to these
- 1:09:38cheesy tropes. Like everything is so
- 1:09:40over-the-top over Don and that's not like, I'm not gave it a
- 1:09:44certain charm and I feel like I totally understand now you're
- 1:09:48like, oh my God. So much, but I think in that
- 1:09:51time it was, it was okay. And that was like, you know,
- 1:09:55part of the reason why people love the K jobs because it was
- 1:09:58so much, it was just so right at the top.
- 1:10:01So I don't know. I feel like it's a, you know,
- 1:10:04it's relative now to like look at these things.
- 1:10:09Speaking of relative, let's talk about his mom because she's
- 1:10:13definitely a billion of the show.
- 1:10:16And What the hell is going on with her?
- 1:10:21I just thought I haven't seen it.
- 1:10:23So that's the same mom from the airs.
- 1:10:26Okay. Okay.
- 1:10:28And it was like, she's actually the worst mom ever.
- 1:10:35She abandons. Her child, I've really kind of
- 1:10:39lows, her son and was obsessed with this song, writer who she
- 1:10:46sang his song once and now she's Kind of on the downhill trend
- 1:10:52for popularity and she wants to redo the song.
- 1:10:55She's trying to like pigeonhole her son into producing the song
- 1:10:58and like I do not give a shit and then at the end she we find
- 1:11:07out. She's completely delusional
- 1:11:09because she stole the song bought the song from under
- 1:11:13menials mom and who's an up-and-coming singer and the
- 1:11:17recorded the song believed her. Her own bullshit, that the song
- 1:11:22was written for her. The, the songwriter menials dad
- 1:11:25wanted to get back with her. And it's like what?
- 1:11:28Yeah, is this? Yeah, really messy.
- 1:11:32It's really messy. I genuinely just disliked her
- 1:11:36character from the beginning to the end.
- 1:11:38Like she had no Redemption Arc like none of her reasonings.
- 1:11:42Made me feel bad for her like just not.
- 1:11:45She was. So she's just such a villain.
- 1:11:47And like, to be honest, I didn't know.
- 1:11:49Why her storyline kept coming up?
- 1:11:52Like literally I would be like all on the in gel train you
- 1:11:55know, blah blah blah. And then we go to like the mom
- 1:11:57and I feel like like why are we here?
- 1:11:59Why are we talking about hard to Mom and the aunt at some to in a
- 1:12:02room together? It just gives me so much
- 1:12:04anxiety. Like I do not want to see on the
- 1:12:06video on the screen right now. Like give me back my my people,
- 1:12:10you know and so I just didn't know where they were going to do
- 1:12:14what Their storyline. I guess at the very end, you
- 1:12:16know, her whole situation with Minami.
- 1:12:19Is Dad and I all that. Like, that was what broke the
- 1:12:22main couple up. So I was like, okay, I guess
- 1:12:24that's why she was a focus even at all for this show.
- 1:12:30But yeah, I totally agree with you.
- 1:12:31I was like, I do not care about all of your just delusional love
- 1:12:35things in your head. Like you're a terrible person
- 1:12:38for abandon your son in the hospital.
- 1:12:40You're a terrible person for like stealing music and like,
- 1:12:43you know, trying to tell yourself that it was for you.
- 1:12:45And like all of her scenes were just such a downer.
- 1:12:48So you just, yeah. Thinking and sad and
- 1:12:51manipulating people like the entire time and I was like, girl
- 1:12:55get off screen like I do not care about get off the screen.
- 1:12:59Yeah she was super self-destructive a terrible mom
- 1:13:03and I okay so here's the thing, I don't mind when moms are
- 1:13:08flawed, people are human, that's fine.
- 1:13:10This lady didn't even try. Okay.
- 1:13:12Yeah. Just tear did not even try and
- 1:13:15the flashback that taking only has as a child like he was
- 1:13:18eating with his mom. Out in a restaurant and she's
- 1:13:21like don't make trouble for me and makes him eat shellfish
- 1:13:26shrimp and he she doesn't remember the, he's severely
- 1:13:29allergic so he just Downs the shrimp anyway, trying to not
- 1:13:33make make waves, and he starts like having an allergic reaction
- 1:13:37starts coughing and like Breathing heavily and she's just
- 1:13:40like don't make trouble for me. Go to the bathroom quietly and
- 1:13:42he has like I don't even know what he did to end the the
- 1:13:47attack that he was having but this Flash Maxine was like very
- 1:13:51telling and super heartbreaking and yeah, obviously he'd have
- 1:13:56trauma. Yes, he has abandonment issues.
- 1:13:58Yes, he has mommy issues as a result of this terrible woman.
- 1:14:02But like do I really feel for her at any point?
- 1:14:06No. Do I feel for the aunt?
- 1:14:08At any point mean yells Aunt, who comes to live with the boys
- 1:14:12and then leaves and tries to get the money out of the royalties
- 1:14:16for the song that they're reading, shut up.
- 1:14:19Yup. I don't care grade, a grade.
- 1:14:22Okay, so let's start talking about hey who I think is a
- 1:14:27actress and she starts causing a lot of issues and trouble.
- 1:14:31She thinks she's a second, female lead.
- 1:14:33She's not like okay yeah. At home girls also.
- 1:14:38So delusional. And she's just like mean for no
- 1:14:41reason. And like I hate that she was a
- 1:14:45villain because I feel like mean, mm or me know She should
- 1:14:49not have given this random lady. So much power over her or it
- 1:14:54just is causing all these problems.
- 1:14:56And at the end of the day, I feel like hey did not like
- 1:15:00suffer as much as I thought she would.
- 1:15:02She's like my friends with fucking Mi Nam now.
- 1:15:05And I'm like, what? Like this is.
- 1:15:07So okay, sorry to me like oh not her thing.
- 1:15:10Just really irked me know. It hurts me too because she's
- 1:15:14smart. Mhm.
- 1:15:16She's very quick intelligent. She's intuitive Of and she
- 1:15:19figures everything out really early and she's manipulative,
- 1:15:23but like, you got to give her props because she's getting info
- 1:15:27where other people were, like, the weren't gonna give her
- 1:15:30anything. And she was pretending to know
- 1:15:33the secret, and then she figures it out honestly, very admirable
- 1:15:37qualities. Like in a in any person like
- 1:15:39she's very resourceful. She uses her powers for evil and
- 1:15:43she's constantly bullying mean yo.
- 1:15:46Yeah, and manipulating her and menials like She has no powers.
- 1:15:51She has no, no way to retaliate or, you know, out think like,
- 1:15:58hey e. So it's very frustrating to
- 1:16:00watch her because she's, it's like a cat playing with a mouse,
- 1:16:02you're like, okay, the mouse is never going to give away here.
- 1:16:05Yeah, for sure. And I just feel like so much of
- 1:16:08the plot moving forward is driven by just how mean Hayes
- 1:16:12and I just don't love that. Like, like I think we touched on
- 1:16:15this earlier, what the character development, right?
- 1:16:17But like, people are making decisions.
- 1:16:19Because they're getting different or becoming better as
- 1:16:22characters. They're making decisions because
- 1:16:24some really mean actress, lady is forcing you to do certain
- 1:16:28things. And I just right, I hated that
- 1:16:31she was just this overused plot device like over and over and
- 1:16:35over again. Like the reason why the boys
- 1:16:36find out that means a girl. Like that's because of hey you
- 1:16:40know and like every single step of the way it's just hanging in
- 1:16:43the background being like you let me make this happen and like
- 1:16:46she even when she dumped water on me now.
- 1:16:49The state Kerry moment. Oh my gosh.
- 1:16:52I just that whole thing. I was just like, why is he
- 1:16:55behind all of this? Like, I just really, really
- 1:16:58disliked her as a villain and like, I totally give it to her,
- 1:17:02though. You're totally right.
- 1:17:03Where she is smart and resourceful.
- 1:17:05And she's like, the only person that is not who's, like,
- 1:17:08figuring things out. But, like, yeah, just
- 1:17:11frustrating that she's just such a one-dimensional villain, we
- 1:17:14don't even get a reason. Why, like, I don't even know why
- 1:17:18she really I came into the picture of than the fact that
- 1:17:21like she just didn't like, how take him like treated her maybe
- 1:17:24and then suddenly fell in love with him to like it was know
- 1:17:28what I thought that was funny, was that she believed her own
- 1:17:32hype like they were like, they say, we're a great couple of.
- 1:17:36Yeah. So like we should be a great
- 1:17:38couple and I'm like, lady. What are you doing?
- 1:17:42Like, she's believing the headlines and her own hype which
- 1:17:45is rather stupid like in the grand scheme of things like we
- 1:17:49Just like iping of her, her intelligence and like she's over
- 1:17:54here, just kind of like, I have this great guy and you're like,
- 1:17:59no, like it's a fake relationship, fake, fake dating
- 1:18:03Trope. And yeah, she's believing that
- 1:18:06she can make a real and it's quite sad to see her just sort
- 1:18:12of banging her head against the wall and torture menial.
- 1:18:16And sorter the guys torture Tick Young.
- 1:18:19Because Tekken clearly like wants nothing to do with her and
- 1:18:25she like, she's inviting herself over and having them make her
- 1:18:29lunch and, you know, different photo shoots.
- 1:18:33She invites herself on things and they're like, what do you
- 1:18:36what it actually. What are you doing?
- 1:18:38Yeah, it's pathetic. She's pathetic.
- 1:18:43Like ultimately, I just couldn't, I can't stand when
- 1:18:47they just, I can see her doing it a couple times.
- 1:18:49Is it was throughout like the show.
- 1:18:51She didn't learn any lessons, she didn't have any sort of
- 1:18:54Reckoning at the end. She I think proof of her.
- 1:18:59Redemptive Arc is a, she doesn't tell the reporter, the truth and
- 1:19:05say, yeah, mean yo is mean, mm? Yeah.
- 1:19:09She's playing her brother. Which I guess it's like the bare
- 1:19:14minimum, right? Like don't say anything but then
- 1:19:16she sort of gives it away as well when she like, pretends to
- 1:19:19faint and the reporters. Like, just not, if you think
- 1:19:23that I'm like, oh my God, so she sort of gives it away and then
- 1:19:28she tries to warn them. So I thought that was her
- 1:19:31Redemptive Arc. That was pretty much it for her.
- 1:19:35And then me now, I'm the real me Nam has a crush on her.
- 1:19:39Evidently my gosh. I was so frustrated.
- 1:19:42Stated I was like, okay first of all they connect with your
- 1:19:44sister, or maybe just download about how terrible this lady is
- 1:19:47before. You're even like, I don't know,
- 1:19:49like buddy-buddy with her like, oh, so bizarre.
- 1:19:52I just, yeah, you know, II something else that was really
- 1:19:57bothersome to me, is the fact that the twins do not in any
- 1:20:01way, shape, or form seem like, siblings to me, they don't know
- 1:20:05anything about each other. She had no clue at all.
- 1:20:09That her brother was trying to be a KPop star.
- 1:20:12Trying to get into this company and was like, she had no idea.
- 1:20:18Yeah. And then vice versa when the guy
- 1:20:21comes back. Her brother comes back of
- 1:20:23evidently. They have no, no conversation,
- 1:20:27no contact, she's missing in action.
- 1:20:29The boys don't know where she is.
- 1:20:31The brother doesn't give a shit. Evidently, yeah.
- 1:20:34I'm like, what kind of family is this?
- 1:20:37They're all they have, they have nobody else.
- 1:20:40No other family. The aunt sucks.
- 1:20:42It's and that's it. They don't have Mom.
- 1:20:43They don't have a dad, they grew up in an orphanage.
- 1:20:45I don't understand this relationship, so I don't know if
- 1:20:50you had any feelings for that. I have a little sister and I'm
- 1:20:53like we're constantly texting like, hey, I'm at Publix.
- 1:20:57Do you need anything? Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:20:59Know, for sure. It's just there's so much, like,
- 1:21:03like I think at the very beginning, they tried to
- 1:21:05establish the Minami, no relationship.
- 1:21:07Like they were both on the Carousel and the kids were all
- 1:21:10bullying them. And then they were like, you
- 1:21:13know, me now, like I'll find her parents or something like that
- 1:21:16and I was like, okay so they have relationship and then from
- 1:21:18there on it was just like absolutely nothing about radios,
- 1:21:22brotherly relationship. Like also like, yeah, I get
- 1:21:25that, he's in the US and C's recovering from surgery, but
- 1:21:27like, would you guys not like message each other?
- 1:21:30Like, yes, you not have phones. Like, maybe talk, like, have a
- 1:21:33heart to heart to be like, you know, this is tough for me.
- 1:21:36Like, do you really want this, like something to give us
- 1:21:39something for that relationship? And it was just like, Like
- 1:21:42nothing. And I honestly, I will say when
- 1:21:44I watch the show, like, I took it at face value the first time
- 1:21:47around because I was like, hey, you know, it's just such an
- 1:21:49afterthought and it's like, you're just so focused on
- 1:21:52menials life and inside of angel that you're not even thinking
- 1:21:55about what the real mean on this doing, right?
- 1:21:57But like now the second time watching it, it's just so
- 1:22:01bizarre. So, sleep with the ending where
- 1:22:03you're just like, but like the brothers getting, with the
- 1:22:06person who's so mean to Sister the whole time, like it's like
- 1:22:09what? Yes, like this is relationship.
- 1:22:12Could have easily been solved when menial was like, Hey, that
- 1:22:16bitch was a bitch to me. Yeah, Peter thanks.
- 1:22:18Don't even look at her. Yeah, one sentence.
- 1:22:22I'll be like, oh, really weird? Okay, never mind.
- 1:22:26That's all it takes. She doesn't have to even go into
- 1:22:29detail and be like she did x y z to me.
- 1:22:31She threw some water on me. She stole my hair clips you
- 1:22:34live. Uh, no.
- 1:22:35She doesn't need to go and see even that much detail.
- 1:22:37Yeah. She just needs to be like stay
- 1:22:39away from that hope and that's it.
- 1:22:40Like, I would have been Enough. I would have been.
- 1:22:43Okay. Yeah.
- 1:22:45So weird and plus like I feel like with me not like the real
- 1:22:49mean on, we never really get much of like how he integrated
- 1:22:52into the groove because I bet that was so freaking weird for
- 1:22:55him to write because it's like yeah he went from having mean
- 1:22:59you know, like pretending to be him now actually having the real
- 1:23:03guy and it would have been like I would have thought there would
- 1:23:06have been some fun moments there, probably could have been
- 1:23:09like, you know, like it Grecian and like, are they friends like
- 1:23:14that? They get along at the end, we
- 1:23:16like, how did that all go but like nothing.
- 1:23:18Nothing there, it's missing content.
- 1:23:21You know what I'm saying? Like, how is it 16 episodes?
- 1:23:24And then they get to the end. You're like, but wait, what
- 1:23:26happened to, like how did we get here?
- 1:23:29And it could have been a neat as easy as now they have mean, um,
- 1:23:33the real guy and the three of them are trying to like, suss
- 1:23:36him out and they offer him water, hot tea, or juice all
- 1:23:40over again, the same thing that they did to me.
- 1:23:42Neil and he chooses soda or said, like something off a wall,
- 1:23:46not even an option. He's not even picking sides
- 1:23:49between the three guys and they're like, oh, that alone
- 1:23:53would lend a lot of like, filling the gaps.
- 1:23:58You know, what I'm saying? Between?
- 1:24:00Okay, mean, you left to find herself, figure out her feelings
- 1:24:05heal, whatever. Mmm.
- 1:24:06And now they have a brand new member that they have to
- 1:24:09establish rapport with. Like how do we get to the end of
- 1:24:14the show so it's not done well back then.
- 1:24:21Also, I feel like the end episode was never really a big
- 1:24:25Focus, you know, like a boy, this is common for a lot of
- 1:24:28older cage on this or it's like, the inkstand all that is like
- 1:24:32the big focus and then to the end, it's kind of like, okay,
- 1:24:35we're writing everyone off like put a bow on it, tied up, like,
- 1:24:38send it out, you know, that's it.
- 1:24:39And I feel like nowadays, it's actually like I don't like we're
- 1:24:42super critical that on post a playlist, but I feel like I'm
- 1:24:45sure you are as well, your cage on reviews, but like the ending
- 1:24:48is so important because that's like the last impression your
- 1:24:51left. Yeah.
- 1:24:51When you watch a kdrama and I feel like with your beautiful
- 1:24:54like I, you know, first time watching I loved it and then the
- 1:24:58ending even then felt like really sudden for me I was like,
- 1:25:01oh okay I guess it's just done now and I feel like nowadays
- 1:25:05there's a lot more emphasis on that versus back then.
- 1:25:07Like that was almost normal like people didn't like she wasn't
- 1:25:11due back. Badly because the ending was
- 1:25:13bad. You know, great observation
- 1:25:15that's a fantastic observation. There was more about the journey
- 1:25:17than the destination and I want the wedding, I want this, I want
- 1:25:21that and it's like you know back back then that wasn't a focus.
- 1:25:26They weren't people are already going to show.
- 1:25:29If the ratings were high, people were already going to show up
- 1:25:32for the finale. They didn't need to do anything
- 1:25:33special, to Foster more word of mouth or, you know, get people
- 1:25:39in other in dollars an international audience.
- 1:25:41There was I'm really an international audience outside
- 1:25:44of East Asia in 2009. So you know what I'm saying?
- 1:25:49Like there's been thinking about different things now in
- 1:25:51different audiences and you're absolutely right.
- 1:25:54That like the closing episode wasn't wasn't a thing.
- 1:25:58Yeah, I also feel like now because like back then like, you
- 1:26:01know, you watch this on TV or, you know, as they came out first
- 1:26:05right now it's like, you know, streaming culture like that's
- 1:26:07where everyone watches kdramas outside of, you know, Korea.
- 1:26:11You know, everyone Is it on a streaming platform?
- 1:26:13And like re-watch ability is something I feel like people do
- 1:26:16think about now Morris? Yeah, maybe than before, because
- 1:26:19before I was like, it's on TV. It's done, you know, the ratings
- 1:26:22are good, okay? Like period end of story versus
- 1:26:25now it's like can we keep people like you know interested in
- 1:26:29these shows coming up to multiple Seasons now to like
- 1:26:32it's like a different Focus so I don't know different different
- 1:26:35like things that people care about these days.
- 1:26:39Yeah can we sell it overseas can.
- 1:26:41Go on Netflix, and it go here. And that's, I don't know if I
- 1:26:47necessarily agree with that either, but there is like a
- 1:26:50point to be made. Like this is they were focused
- 1:26:53on different things back then. And this was largely for the
- 1:26:57Korean audience, and I maybe like the Korean audience, just
- 1:27:00didn't like, they were like, I just want them to get back
- 1:27:02together and that's that. Yeah, not that.
- 1:27:04It has to be this, like, Grand gesture and have all of these
- 1:27:09points and needed to be checked off at the end.
- 1:27:11Like we feel today. You know, speaking on that, I
- 1:27:17feel like I didn't remember the ending as much as I remembered
- 1:27:20other things in the show. Yeah, you know, like the
- 1:27:24performances, like some of the photo shoots?
- 1:27:27I remembered. I remembered the final episode,
- 1:27:31I think where she again, they're like, oh mean Times missing he's
- 1:27:37in whatever City it's not going to make it back the company.
- 1:27:41President wants demands to see him because he's good feeling
- 1:27:45some type of way. He's very suspicious that
- 1:27:47they're pulling a fast, one on him or something.
- 1:27:49So we need you to be mean, I'm again, and I'm like oh I
- 1:27:53remember this whole thing, she gets drunk and pick young
- 1:27:56recognizes her and takes her home and it's like I remember
- 1:28:00that scene. I remember her like slumping
- 1:28:02over on his lap and he's like he like realizes oh it's my God.
- 1:28:06Oh my God, she was missing all the stock.
- 1:28:11All that stuff. I remember her seeing Mother
- 1:28:15Superior. Carrier a bunch and like
- 1:28:19watching she kept praying to Mother Superior and I'm like,
- 1:28:21but that's. Is that even a thing?
- 1:28:24I don't know. I'm not Catholic.
- 1:28:26So I was like, that seems a little wrong, isn't it?
- 1:28:29But like, Mary not Brothers. Why is she praying to the Mother
- 1:28:33Superior? I feel like she was, like,
- 1:28:35trying to talk to the Mother Superior like as in like, give
- 1:28:39me advice, you know, yes. You know what I mean?
- 1:28:41It's kind of like, yeah. I don't know.
- 1:28:43I guess Mother Superior is kind of like her mom.
- 1:28:45This is Tuition, because she is. Yeah.
- 1:28:47Is like there and agree. Like there were definitely
- 1:28:51things that stood out more so than the very end.
- 1:28:54And I think it's just for me, is more the comedy scenes that
- 1:28:58really, really made this show. Great for me, like the random,
- 1:29:02like, remake to stay did so much like the side side scenes, you
- 1:29:08know, that explain it while. But like, for example, every
- 1:29:11time Jeremy likes his imagination runs wild.
- 1:29:14I think it's so funny. The Watch the actors like act,
- 1:29:17so like dramatically and you know, for the sake of his
- 1:29:21imagination or they'd also did a bunch of like parodies to which
- 1:29:24I think. Yeah, it's a time, it was so
- 1:29:27fun. I feel like around that era
- 1:29:29parodies are such a big thing. Like just everyone was doing
- 1:29:33parodies of famous movies. Famous scenes, famous
- 1:29:36commercials even, you know, they integrated a lot of those into
- 1:29:40the cage. I was like, I actually remember
- 1:29:42a lot of those parodies more so than like some of the drama
- 1:29:45scenes. Is there are just like shots so
- 1:29:47funny in a way and I love my agree.
- 1:29:50I agree. And that was some of the best
- 1:29:51stuff was the comedy bits and the parodies the spoofs.
- 1:29:55The fact that I mentioned this earlier about the Hong sister,
- 1:29:59sort of subverting expectations and tropes.
- 1:30:03I think an episode when she gets drunk and you think that she
- 1:30:07fought, she falls on Tick Young and you think that they kiss,
- 1:30:10they didn't she vomited in my God.
- 1:30:13So that's like a subversion, right?
- 1:30:15You think? They had the, you know, smash
- 1:30:18lips together and they're embarrassed, because of that.
- 1:30:20No, she's mortified because she vomited in his mouth.
- 1:30:23So that's like, a subversion of the Trope.
- 1:30:26I like, she goes into, they go into the, the showers on the
- 1:30:31second floor of the building at some point, and she just
- 1:30:34finished up a shower, but she sees them naked and they cover
- 1:30:39the modesty clouds with people. So, yeah.
- 1:30:45And she envisions them as like little cherubs and then they
- 1:30:48turn into like children and that helps her, like, get out of the
- 1:30:52situation. She's just like, taking herself
- 1:30:54out of it. Mentally.
- 1:30:56Let me see. They lock up in one of these.
- 1:31:00Like, I don't know how to describe it, but you, you're
- 1:31:02talking about it where they have like, an imaginary scenario and
- 1:31:07they film it, and it's a parody. And they did a parody of old
- 1:31:10boy, okay? Cause the, do you remember Are
- 1:31:16you really so so funny. I totally that one really stood
- 1:31:21out to me too. Yeah wait dumpling scene is I
- 1:31:25call? Yes I think oh my God.
- 1:31:31She gets stuck on the top of a moving truck at one point.
- 1:31:38Yeah. Then she like tosses the phone
- 1:31:40or something and it lands on top of the truck.
- 1:31:41She goes to get it and passes it back to take you on and The
- 1:31:46truck starts moving and she's like, tolling on he doesn't
- 1:31:49notice. And that's like really funny.
- 1:31:52Got it slapstick, right? Slapstick, comedy, that kind of
- 1:31:56stuff. We don't get like.
- 1:31:58That feels very old school, kdrama to have like, a screwball
- 1:32:03comedy. Yeah, yes.
- 1:32:04There's hijinks and kdramas all the time especially with a light
- 1:32:09rom-coms, but this type of like outrageous outlandish stuff.
- 1:32:15Meaning is, is really kind of old school and it's nice to see
- 1:32:21a nice to return to. So, yeah, I miss it, like,
- 1:32:24honestly, like when I was younger, I feel like that's what
- 1:32:27I loved about these like rom-coms, because the comedy was
- 1:32:30so, like, out there in a dumb way, but it just made me really
- 1:32:34laugh. And now like, I don't know, even
- 1:32:37the rom-coms like I feel like there's not too many crazy
- 1:32:40comedy moments like, yeah, and it's like, I kind of miss it
- 1:32:44because I made things. Feel unserious and versus know,
- 1:32:47it's like, everything is so serious.
- 1:32:49And the little bits of Comedy. Like, don't like, like, don't
- 1:32:53like, I don't know. Like over.
- 1:32:55Yeah. But it wasn't bored.
- 1:32:56Am I looking for? Like it doesn't like they're a
- 1:32:58little more highbrow. Yeah, more highbrow forces, this
- 1:33:01is lowbrow. She what was it?
- 1:33:04One time she goes, she's are sleeping in the same room and
- 1:33:08she, the manager gives her a taser gun just like he tries
- 1:33:12anything. If he looks at you a certain way
- 1:33:15just like, Him. Yeah, so she manages to tase
- 1:33:19herself. Oh girl and collapses on top of
- 1:33:23him and they like she sleeps on top of him, the rest of the
- 1:33:27night, but the fact that she manages to tase herself and said
- 1:33:31is like you would never see that in the kdrama made in 2023 or
- 1:33:36recently. So, yeah, it's it's a lot.
- 1:33:40It's so much but it's what makes these dramas?
- 1:33:45Good. And I feel like, going back to
- 1:33:47the characters to it's like if the main female lead was not so
- 1:33:51clumsy and just like, oftentimes frustrating to watch.
- 1:33:54Like, I've like, they couldn't get away with some of these
- 1:33:57really dumb kind of Comedy moments.
- 1:33:59Like yeah, we're like the going on a moving car.
- 1:34:02Like those things wouldn't have stuck because like you'd been
- 1:34:04like why would a normal person have done something like that
- 1:34:07but because she's the way she is and this character like it does
- 1:34:11help lend to that comedy aspect. Yeah.
- 1:34:15So Some other comedy that it sort of delves into comedy, but
- 1:34:20it's the portrayal of like the K Idol industry in general because
- 1:34:24I feel like they're, they're definitely talking about
- 1:34:29specific like it's a specific culture that they're talking
- 1:34:33about in the show and this was 2009.
- 1:34:35I don't feel like much has really changed.
- 1:34:38Don't I'm saying, yeah, I totally agree.
- 1:34:41I mean, they touch on it a lot and I guess, like, in this show,
- 1:34:44Angel is kind of like a more Lished group now.
- 1:34:46So, they're not like, kind of the rookie.
- 1:34:48Like, they're like, big and Korea, right?
- 1:34:50And so they talked about a lot of things they have to do is
- 1:34:52work. He's like the really dumb
- 1:34:54reality TV shows that they had to do.
- 1:34:56And like, yes, you know, the radish eating scene with the
- 1:34:59most ridiculous but like, I don't know, I just think is
- 1:35:03interesting, especially the second time watching this where
- 1:35:05I caught a lot of those moments where it says, you know, the
- 1:35:08first time I feel like it kind of went over my head but I was
- 1:35:11like well, you know, they are really talking about the things
- 1:35:13that these Idol trainees have to do.
- 1:35:16In order to promote their group and artists like make it big in
- 1:35:19this world. And plus, I feel like some of
- 1:35:22the things that they mentioned that were kind of just in
- 1:35:24passing. Just felt really like
- 1:35:26exploitative in a way like it was like the whole sticker
- 1:35:30thing. I don't know if you remember,
- 1:35:31but it was like, they go into a shop on taking one's birthday
- 1:35:34and they're like, oh there's stickers and like the group had
- 1:35:37like no idea that that was a thing and I was like they're
- 1:35:41like this is literally your image, you know?
- 1:35:43Like it's just kind of like subtly in the back.
- 1:35:45Ground at that. It was like oh they're just kind
- 1:35:47of taking advantage of your idol image and like you don't really
- 1:35:50know what is being passed around to the fans and to everyone.
- 1:35:54Yeah. And now you've been like, the
- 1:35:56whole reason why, I mean, you have to step in, to pretend to
- 1:35:59be mean on was because the manager told me time to get eye
- 1:36:02surgery and I was, oh, yeah. Like I was like, okay.
- 1:36:06Like we just really brushed over that right?
- 1:36:08Because it's like, oh yeah, right fun, but like now watching
- 1:36:11the kennels like do this kind of stuff like I get it.
- 1:36:15This tree and maybe that's what people have to go through, but
- 1:36:18it's like, man, like you have to get surgery just to do it like
- 1:36:22that. I don't know, just doesn't sit
- 1:36:24right with me the second time watching it and I feel like it
- 1:36:27was just so different back. Then that I didn't even think
- 1:36:29about it. But now I'm like man that's not
- 1:36:31cool. Absolutely and they play for
- 1:36:34Laughs because the managers like I just told him to get a little
- 1:36:37work done before he signed the contract.
- 1:36:40Yeah. Now he's sleeping like this and
- 1:36:42he doesn't look like he crosses his eyes and I'm like, what kind
- 1:36:45Kind of syrup. Where did they take?
- 1:36:47It was just a back-alley plastic surgery that they had because
- 1:36:50Korea's like the plastic surgery, capital of the world,
- 1:36:53so it makes no sense that his surgery was botched to that
- 1:36:56effect. And then he had to go to the us
- 1:36:58so that I could fix it and he can recover weird.
- 1:37:01I was like none of this makes any sense.
- 1:37:03But yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:37:05The underlying like thesis is that they all have to change and
- 1:37:11get plastic surgery to look a certain way to appeal to a
- 1:37:14certain audience. And that's just normal.
- 1:37:18That's not asking a lot of these people that's just bare minimum
- 1:37:22is that they need to look their best.
- 1:37:24They need to have the double eyelid surgery.
- 1:37:27They need to have fun nose job. They need to have their face
- 1:37:31shave in. They need to, you know, work out
- 1:37:34and look good. And it's like very Problematic.
- 1:37:39Yes, even though like it's a cycle and we feed into it and
- 1:37:43whatever and talking about, we like fans in general, the fans
- 1:37:47that are camped out outside the company at all hours.
- 1:37:51I was very, I remember watching in 2014 and thinking, what are
- 1:37:54they doing? I don't understand why, they're
- 1:37:57just outside all the time. Are these students like I had
- 1:38:00all these questions? Now, I understand that this is a
- 1:38:03take on like the SAS saying fans who are constantly following
- 1:38:08around. Round.
- 1:38:09Yeah, their Idols to the detriment and like secure
- 1:38:13security Hazard of their favorite Idols.
- 1:38:17So it's very problematic and the way that like the media is
- 1:38:22portrayed as well is very toxic and weird and the paparazzi is
- 1:38:27it's not just like the paparazzi's following them
- 1:38:30around. It's like they're writing
- 1:38:32incendiary like gossip about them and it's affecting their
- 1:38:37lives. Their careers.
- 1:38:38And they have to Blink play along and the fake dating thing.
- 1:38:42And yeah, I mean, all of it is not wrong.
- 1:38:46Look, they're still not. It's not an accurate to to have
- 1:38:51all of these things going on in the periphery Four Angels.
- 1:38:55So it's sad. Yeah, it really is and like even
- 1:38:59the fan thing, you know, I would have loved to see the fandom
- 1:39:02been more toxic almost. Like if we could have invited
- 1:39:06them to be more of the villain roles I Feel like that could
- 1:39:09have been a really fun as well. Because like, I don't know,
- 1:39:11like, I've heard news articles of just like, really bad crazy
- 1:39:15fans out there. Yeah, we're doing, like, just
- 1:39:18dangerous stuff. Like, I don't know, like, I
- 1:39:20don't want to get into specific examples, but like even recently
- 1:39:24like I didn't, there was like an article that came out about BTS
- 1:39:27member Jin. He's like in the Army and then
- 1:39:29like nurse like and the Army left her post, like give him a
- 1:39:33vaccine. Like that kind of stuff.
- 1:39:35It's like insane, you know. Yeah.
- 1:39:37Like it's like These hands are at even know, she's like a fan
- 1:39:40or if she's just like somebody who wanted to get involved.
- 1:39:42But anyways, go back to this kdrama, it would have been fun
- 1:39:45to see some of those like Angel fans like really get involved
- 1:39:49and like make things messy from Members.
- 1:39:51You know, they could have been a more fun villain than just kind
- 1:39:54of reusing. Hey, for everything, at least in
- 1:39:57the beginning, like, that would have been a cool angle.
- 1:39:59You know. Absolutely.
- 1:40:00Because there's endless horror stories that are true about
- 1:40:05these terrible. Like I can't even call them fans
- 1:40:08like there. They're just, they're not fans
- 1:40:10at that point. Yeah.
- 1:40:12Yeah. And the BTS thing, I think, what
- 1:40:14was it? A train operator or some
- 1:40:19somebody employed by the train company was giving out.
- 1:40:21Oh, yeah. When RM was taking the train and
- 1:40:26would tell their friends like, which seat he was in so that
- 1:40:29they could sit next to him or close to him.
- 1:40:32And Jungkook just said something to them about, like, stop
- 1:40:36sending me food because they His address and kept sending him
- 1:40:40food. Yeah.
- 1:40:41And he's like, what the can eat it.
- 1:40:44And I like it. Yeah.
- 1:40:45Like you can't eat stuff like that.
- 1:40:46Like, you don't know what they put into that food, you know?
- 1:40:49Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 1:40:50I don't know. There's like I've seen a lot of
- 1:40:52just like rumors about that specific K.
- 1:40:57That girl who likes sent him the food.
- 1:40:58Like she's like, kind of crazy. Like she's right.
- 1:41:01Like this isn't okay. Yeah it's insane.
- 1:41:04And I think that would have been fun to explore it, you know?
- 1:41:07And this cage. Yeah.
- 1:41:08Context, is he had all the characters ready, but like right
- 1:41:11at do too many bad things other than just like, you know, quote
- 1:41:14unquote defend their oppas, one like bad things happen, but
- 1:41:17like, it would have been fun to see like some of the crazier
- 1:41:20sides of those fans, that it would have been interesting.
- 1:41:22Absolutely. So one of the last things that I
- 1:41:25have in my notes has to do with this cliche that is in kdrama
- 1:41:31and sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
- 1:41:33I don't think it worked here. So in episode 15, they break up.
- 1:41:37Yes, right. She'll eat.
- 1:41:40She was like planning to leave after the Japan trip and pick
- 1:41:44him. Didn't know.
- 1:41:45And then he goes to see her back in Japan.
- 1:41:48Like he just makes that trip like two or three times I don't
- 1:41:50even know. Just make it happen.
- 1:41:52Yeah, but he is like he's very sad.
- 1:41:57The whole scene is very angsty and to me I don't even get why
- 1:42:01she has to leave this. In this case, it really it
- 1:42:06didn't make much sense to me. It's not that.
- 1:42:10The usual case is all. They have to realize their
- 1:42:13feelings to get back together. They know their feelings.
- 1:42:17They know that they like each other.
- 1:42:19It's just that she needs time to heal and that he's been very
- 1:42:25selfish and the birth Secrets. Got all intertwined.
- 1:42:30Yeah, her mom. His mom is terrible.
- 1:42:32She hates his mom. Yeah, she's very emotional and
- 1:42:36take young. Just needs to respect her pain
- 1:42:40as she gets through this. Hmm.
- 1:42:42And I don't like this sins of the father shit where they
- 1:42:49didn't make the same exact mistakes as their parents did
- 1:42:51but they have to deal with the Fallout of the first Generations
- 1:42:55trauma. So essentially generational
- 1:42:58trauma in a kdrama sense and I just don't I don't Stand by
- 1:43:04that. Like, in the writing of it I
- 1:43:06just was like I don't I don't get it.
- 1:43:08Like she doesn't need to disappear, she could just be
- 1:43:11like, look, I'm gonna go to Fiji for I don't know how long I'll
- 1:43:16let you know when I get back. Yeah.
- 1:43:18It doesn't need to be this whole like mysterious thing and like
- 1:43:22the whole like you see him grabbing her hand.
- 1:43:26Great. Okay.
- 1:43:29Yeah. Like what did you do?
- 1:43:32How do you feel? About that sort of thing
- 1:43:34happening in the very last episodes.
- 1:43:37Usually of a kdrama as I think this one was like yeah I knowing
- 1:43:42I think but it should have happened earlier if it was gonna
- 1:43:45happen. I also like it's tough because
- 1:43:50it's like, I understand. Like the generational trauma is
- 1:43:53weighing down on both of these characters, but neither of them
- 1:43:56really changed for the better because of it also.
- 1:44:01And so it was like they broke up but then He's still a same way
- 1:44:04towards her and then she still sees the world the same way.
- 1:44:07So it's like, I don't know what this did for both of them as
- 1:44:11people. It's like, you know, you always
- 1:44:12hear about, like, you know, there's like reality TV shows
- 1:44:15where it's like, oh, this ex-couple, are they going to get
- 1:44:17back together? And then, you know, the
- 1:44:19commentary is always like, well, if neither of them changed like,
- 1:44:23what is the point of them getting back together and I feel
- 1:44:25like it was similar for this or it's like they couldn't get over
- 1:44:29there, both both of their internal issues with their
- 1:44:31families, but I feel like even tour The end that's so didn't
- 1:44:34really happen. Like when you land the mom had
- 1:44:36like, a heart-to-heart where she was like, you know, be nice to
- 1:44:39your son. But like I'll tell ya like I
- 1:44:42don't feel like it really did too much for them as people, so
- 1:44:48it was like, okay, but I understand for the sake of the
- 1:44:50plot, they needed that break, but I think it would have
- 1:44:53benefited happening earlier and then really kind of like delved
- 1:44:57into how they healed and how they overcame this trauma, you
- 1:45:01know, even together, you know after doing It separately and
- 1:45:04kind of figuring out together that would have been nice, but
- 1:45:07it just felt like a plot device in this situation.
- 1:45:09Also, as a means to bring in the mom and her whole sad story this
- 1:45:14whole time. So like I'm like, I get it.
- 1:45:16But yeah, I totally agree with you were.
- 1:45:19I don't think it really works out well, for this drama, like
- 1:45:22things didn't really add up and like, even at the very end, she
- 1:45:25still goes like, Africa. Something like well, he was
- 1:45:28like, I'm still going to be like So yeah, places and again, like
- 1:45:37I don't again this hasn't improved much.
- 1:45:40I don't think in kdramas but she's like I'm going to Africa
- 1:45:42and it's like Africa is a continent.
- 1:45:44Oh my gosh. We're in Africa.
- 1:45:46Are you going? You know?
- 1:45:48Yes, very true. I feel like so many k jobless.
- 1:45:51That's like such a big thing, right?
- 1:45:53Like are you going to Botswana Nigeria stuff?
- 1:45:58Like where girl? She's like I'm going Africa.
- 1:46:02It's like okay. Okay, all right for sure.
- 1:46:06Oh man, also the star necklace. What do you think?
- 1:46:08What was it with the mid 2000s? Late 2000s, and the frickin star
- 1:46:14necklace? Because I do remember there
- 1:46:15being a star necklace in Boys Over Flowers as well.
- 1:46:19And I was like it was that just like a thing back then that they
- 1:46:23were constantly invoking. The stars and Celestial things.
- 1:46:26And then, yeah. They get a necklace.
- 1:46:29Yeah, and now it does star necklace.
- 1:46:31I totally agree. It's Always popping up Stars was
- 1:46:34like the thing, you know, like thing all types of stars, but
- 1:46:37metaphorical stars real star. It's okay.
- 1:46:40My love from another star, like it's all but honestly, I kind
- 1:46:46of, I still love it. I don't know those like, she's
- 1:46:48you metaphor is, I'm a sucker for so I can't even complain.
- 1:46:51All right, all right. All right, fair enough?
- 1:46:54Yeah, I think I've come to the end of my notes.
- 1:46:57The only notes that I have are just like wardrobe because at
- 1:47:01one point she's wearing The double Polo.
- 1:47:04A polo shirt inside of another polo with the popped collar?
- 1:47:08Do you remember that? Stabbed like the alternating
- 1:47:10Polo colors and that they were wearing two shirts?
- 1:47:14Look, I thought they looked great back in 09 and I was like
- 1:47:18that, those like those outfits. I was like, yes, what the motto
- 1:47:23she was wearing, like the plaid pants again, red plaid pants
- 1:47:27with the leather jacket and everything so just like gets
- 1:47:31high. Cool and the hair and the makeup
- 1:47:36to the amount of black eyeliner they put on take young.
- 1:47:40I was like damn damn oh yeah, look my hair evolution as well
- 1:47:46that was great to see and I think the only outfit that
- 1:47:50really bothered me was every time they put him in something
- 1:47:53that was almost off the shoulder like, tickle.
- 1:47:55Oh yeah. It looked very feminine and then
- 1:47:58they kept doing. I think it was only two times
- 1:48:01but I was like that's enough. He had a blouse.
- 1:48:04It was a blouse that swooped down in the front.
- 1:48:08Hmm. I bet it was like, you remember
- 1:48:10these? It looks like a frickin curtain
- 1:48:13on him. I was like he's wearing a
- 1:48:15curtain and then they change. They did another one.
- 1:48:18It was like a first, he had a gray and then the flag, but then
- 1:48:21it was black and then there was like, a red one.
- 1:48:23I was like, it's never ending. Yeah.
- 1:48:26So that stuff made me laugh as well.
- 1:48:28It was just very comical to return to that someone commented
- 1:48:31on a tick tock that I did about it.
- 1:48:33And Instead, he looks so good, wearing that kind of stuff as a
- 1:48:36model. And I was like, okay, just
- 1:48:40because it's on the runway doesn't mean that it should be
- 1:48:45on a Kpop started in a kdrama. So, yeah, it had a lot of fun
- 1:48:51with that. It was fun though, you know this
- 1:48:54is like the part of like the old kdramas and I'm like I love it
- 1:48:57because watching it you're just like it, brings you back to a
- 1:48:59time where that was that was cool.
- 1:49:02Like people are that and it was like house shit and hair, the
- 1:49:06hair styles and everyone had to you're like dude, that guy was
- 1:49:09cool back in 09. He was styling, this was
- 1:49:14fashion. Yeah.
- 1:49:15Okay, yeah. It had a lot of fun with it.
- 1:49:19Ultimately, you know, it take what we say with a grain of
- 1:49:23salt. You can watch this for yourself,
- 1:49:25it is available on Viki. If you want to watch, you are
- 1:49:28beautiful and let us know what you think about it.
- 1:49:32If you agree with our assessment, if you're kind of
- 1:49:34like I can't get into it. That's fine.
- 1:49:37That's fine. It's not every kdramas for
- 1:49:39everyone and the older ones do you have a lot of merits,
- 1:49:42they're very nostalgic for us and for other viewers and
- 1:49:46sometimes if you just didn't live through that era, there's
- 1:49:48no way that you could do. We're gonna release.
- 1:49:50This is some of the things. So yeah.
- 1:49:53But II, think I encourage people to watch older kdramas.
- 1:49:56I just see for yourself. Yeah, honestly, I feel like
- 1:50:00you're beautiful feels like a Kpop fan fit come to life, you
- 1:50:04know? Like that's what it is.
- 1:50:05Yeah. It's like if you have a little
- 1:50:08bit of the delusional, Kpop fan in, you, you will eat this up
- 1:50:11because you're like it, that could be me, you know?
- 1:50:14I could be an innocent girl, where all three of like, my
- 1:50:18favorite band peppers are. Level 3, you know, like I feel
- 1:50:21like that is audience and like I don't know if they did ever do a
- 1:50:25remake and like know, kind of fix some of these nitpicky
- 1:50:29things that we have, I would watch that in a heartbeat.
- 1:50:32So you're absolutely right because sometimes I miss one
- 1:50:35like plots go off-roading. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:50:38Like this thing starts on your life.
- 1:50:41This is ludicrous but I'm bored. I'm here, I'm sitting here, I'm
- 1:50:47ready. Yeah, and there's really
- 1:50:49enchanting about watching something that you just have to
- 1:50:52suspend your disbelief over. Yes, we have a ton of nitpicky
- 1:50:56things. Yes, we can't get over some
- 1:50:57things, but ultimately, it's it made us laugh.
- 1:51:01It entertained us. And it's just like watching like
- 1:51:04a freaking Fast and Furious movie.
- 1:51:06It's like, you're not in it for the, for the realism.
- 1:51:10Yeah, exactly. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:51:15Thank You Jennie. So much for coming on the
- 1:51:17podcast for talking at length, about your beautiful year.
