- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to SEC Football Addiction. We've got
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sports Talk Jay on with us. Tennessee and Texas this weekend.
- 0:07Speaker 1: All of our videos are brought to you by PrizePix.

- 0:11Speaker 1: Get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they use code HMA. Jay,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I want to talk about Texas. I want to talk
- 0:17Speaker 1: about Arch. I want to talk about Brandon. But to
- 0:19Speaker 1: put a bow on out-of-conference play, Tennessee looked pretty good
- 0:23Speaker 1: through three games. Now, didn't play great competition by any means,
- 0:27Speaker 1: but got the road win. against Georgia Tech, dominated at
- 0:31Speaker 1: home the way they needed to. Overall, I know it's
- 0:35Speaker 1: hard to judge when it's not the SEC, but would
- 0:38Speaker 1: you give this team an A through three games?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Probably an A-minus or something like that. First of all,
- 0:43Speaker 2: beating Georgia Tech, that was a game I was concerned about.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It turns out they're not as good as what they
- 0:49Speaker 2: have been the last three years. But, you know, I'm
- 0:52Speaker 2: still going on the road. I'm real pleased with that.
- 0:54Speaker 2: With a true freshman, that's obviously– You know, that's going
- 0:58Speaker 2: to be the running theme of the entire season is
- 1:00Speaker 2: how quickly can he become not a freshman. And at
- 1:04Speaker 2: some point, he becomes a sophomore this season. That's just
- 1:07Speaker 2: kind of how that works. So, no, I'd give him
- 1:09Speaker 2: a good solid grade of an A-, somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been impressed overall.
- 1:14Speaker 1: They're doing the things that you're supposed to do against
- 1:18Speaker 1: teams you're better than. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that that's,
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know, oh, well, you beat bad teams the way
- 1:23Speaker 1: you were supposed to beat them, you're going to all
- 1:25Speaker 1: of a sudden go to the playoff.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:27Speaker 1: think they're the, the nation is kind of waking up
- 1:30Speaker 1: to the fact that Tennessee is looking a lot better.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Now they get the big test this weekend against the
- 1:35Speaker 1: number one team in the country. I don't know that any,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we were talking on your show, like, yeah, it's a
- 1:39Speaker 1: little better. You don't have to go on the road,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but I don't know that any tests get much tougher
- 1:42Speaker 1: than playing the best team out there. And so with
- 1:46Speaker 1: Texas coming in this weekend, we talked about arch a
- 1:49Speaker 1: little bit and you asked me kind of my opinion on,
- 1:51Speaker 1: on where he's at. He has struggled with, on the road,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and he's not looked super sharp this year in his
- 1:57Speaker 1: first few games, certainly had his moments against Ohio State,
- 2:00Speaker 1: which you can't take away from them. But if Tennessee's crowd,
- 2:05Speaker 1: if their defense, if Jim Knowles, if the secondary can
- 2:08Speaker 1: rattle him just a little bit, it certainly would help
- 2:11Speaker 1: Tennessee's odds in this game.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're going to try to pressure him
- 2:15Speaker 2: quite a bit.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I know I would.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I would be putting as much pressure on him as possible,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and I would be trying to use the crowd to
- 2:23Speaker 2: sort of combine with that I would not lay back
- 2:27Speaker 2: and just let him have time I think if you
- 2:29Speaker 2: do that he's going to get comfortable and probably have
- 2:31Speaker 2: a really good day you want to force him to
- 2:33Speaker 2: run even if he hurts you with his legs I'd
- 2:36Speaker 2: rather he do that than connect up with Cam Coleman
- 2:39Speaker 2: and all these five-star wide receivers that he's got that
- 2:42Speaker 2: you're gonna you don't want to be trying to stay
- 2:45Speaker 2: with them for four seconds you can stay with them
- 2:47Speaker 2: for two or three after that you need to put
- 2:49Speaker 2: pressure on.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Him Tennessee, on the other side of the ball, Tennessee's
- 2:53Speaker 1: offensive line, I look at that as a big, big
- 2:57Speaker 1: key for this. If Tennessee can keep Brandon clean, if
- 3:01Speaker 1: they can give him time to operate against a good
- 3:03Speaker 1: Texas front, and if they can run the ball, if
- 3:06Speaker 1: that offensive line plays to its ability, which I think it's,
- 3:10Speaker 1: if not one of the best offensive lines in the SEC,
- 3:14Speaker 1: if they can be good, and I know offensive line
- 3:16Speaker 1: play is not sexy.
- 3:17Speaker 3: We'd rather talk about.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Brandon, you know, his deep ball. We'd rather talk about
- 3:20Speaker 1: Bishop running. But to me, the key is the offensive line.
- 3:23Speaker 1: If they can slow up that Texas pass rush, that's
- 3:26Speaker 1: where Tennessee is going to find a lot of success
- 3:27Speaker 1: offensively on Saturday.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, the offensive line, I think, has played pretty well.
- 3:32Speaker 2: But a lot of folks here in K-Town are not
- 3:35Speaker 2: thrilled with their play. Now, we've averaged like 280 yards
- 3:38Speaker 2: on the ground all three games. But again, that's against
- 3:42Speaker 2: inferior competition. What can we do against Texas? I think
- 3:46Speaker 2: if we get in the 150, 160-yard range rushing, We'll
- 3:50Speaker 2: have a chance to win this ballgame. If we're at 100,
- 3:53Speaker 2: I think we've probably lost pretty badly. That's not going
- 3:56Speaker 2: to work. We've got to have at least 150, 160,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and hopefully if we get to 200, I think we
- 4:01Speaker 2: win the ballgame.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'll get right back to chatting with Sports Talk Jay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: but I need two things from you. One, make sure
- 4:06Speaker 1: you are subscribed here. Two, make sure you're subscribed on
- 4:09Speaker 1: our audio platforms. I told you when I did the
- 4:11Speaker 1: recap from the Kennesaw State game, I will be at
- 4:14Speaker 1: the Tennessee-Texas game this weekend. and I will do my
- 4:18Speaker 1: very best to get an audio-only podcast up immediately. I
- 4:20Speaker 1: know the service is not always great around big games,
- 4:22Speaker 1: so I don't know if I can do a video,
- 4:24Speaker 1: but I want to talk with you guys after the game.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm picking Tennessee in this one, so you ride with
- 4:29Speaker 1: your boy, get on the audio platform, whether that's through
- 4:32Speaker 1: the Spreaker link, whether that's through the Apple Podcast link,
- 4:36Speaker 1: whether that's through the Spotify link.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Make sure you are subscribed and you don't miss it.
- 4:38Speaker 3: All right, back to Sports Talk, Jay.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Do you.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I know it's hard to predict this, but do you.
- 4:46Speaker 1: have any kind of expectations for the day that brandon
- 4:49Speaker 1: has just like because it is facing the best team
- 4:53Speaker 1: he'll play so far but he's also playing at home
- 4:57Speaker 1: he's got good weapons good offensive line good coach for
- 5:00Speaker 1: this like thoughts around what.
- 5:02Speaker 4: He'll he might look like on saturday it's going to
- 5:04Speaker 4: be really interesting you're going to find out a lot
- 5:06Speaker 4: about him in this game because he's going to go
- 5:09Speaker 4: up against the most the best roster he'll see all
- 5:12Speaker 4: year will be saturday because that's about a 50 million
- 5:15Speaker 4: dollar uh return on investment they've got over there and
- 5:19Speaker 4: they're going to be coming at him hard and you're
- 5:21Speaker 4: going to see the competitive nature of this young man
- 5:24Speaker 4: because usually these guys that have played at a really
- 5:26Speaker 4: high level and are very accustomed to success the guys
- 5:30Speaker 4: only lost.
- 5:30Speaker 2: One game in the last four years and three games
- 5:33Speaker 2: so he's used to winning you're probably going to see
- 5:36Speaker 2: him get his dander up and be like hey wait
- 5:38Speaker 2: a minute You think you're going to push me around?
- 5:40Speaker 2: And you may see him really trying and getting into
- 5:44Speaker 2: that mindset. I think it's going to be a very
- 5:46Speaker 2: interesting game to watch how he reacts to tremendous pressure
- 5:50Speaker 2: coming off the edge. Will he take off and run more?
- 5:54Speaker 2: This is going to be a heck of a game
- 5:56Speaker 2: to watch.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Defensively, again, Tennessee's not played great, great offenses by any means.
- 6:03Speaker 1: But defensively, the things that you can tell from the
- 6:06Speaker 1: early part of the season against kind of inferior competition,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I wonder how much that translates against an offense that
- 6:13Speaker 1: has a ton of talent, whether it's Smothers, whether it's
- 6:16Speaker 1: Relique Brown, whether it's just any of their weapons. You
- 6:20Speaker 1: talked about Coleman, Wingo's there, and then Arch, right? Like
- 6:24Speaker 1: the centerpiece of all of it. I do wonder, this
- 6:28Speaker 1: is Tennessee's first real test on the other side of
- 6:30Speaker 1: the ball too, what that defense can do.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Because if you can hold Texas under.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I don't know what the magic number for this game is,
- 6:39Speaker 1: but it feels like if you could hold Texas in
- 6:41Speaker 1: the mid twenties, maybe 28, Tennessee would have a really
- 6:44Speaker 1: good chance to win this. If they get up to
- 6:46Speaker 1: the 30, 31, 35 range, that's where I think it
- 6:49Speaker 1: gets pretty tough to say, all right, are we going
- 6:51Speaker 1: to answer them score for score in the shootout? But
- 6:53Speaker 1: if Texas can be held down, which they only had
- 6:56Speaker 1: 30 against UTSA, if Texas can be held down in
- 6:58Speaker 1: this game, that defense is going to have to show up.
- 7:00Speaker 3: And that's a big question for me too. Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 2: The defense has played well. The first three games, um,
- 7:06Speaker 2: But again, it's against the competition that we've gone up against.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You're going to find out a lot about Coach Owings
- 7:11Speaker 2: in this game, the guy they brought in to strengthen
- 7:14Speaker 2: this team, to get them to where they don't get
- 7:16Speaker 2: bullied anymore. If this was last year's defense, I would
- 7:20Speaker 2: have not a lot of hope that we could keep
- 7:22Speaker 2: them under 35. I think they'd probably just bully us.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I don't think they're going to bully us, though, come Saturday.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think you're going to see a much tougher team
- 7:31Speaker 2: physically and mentally this Now, there's no guarantee you win
- 7:34Speaker 2: the game over that, but boy, if we don't win,
- 7:38Speaker 2: I don't want us to get bullied. That concerns me,
- 7:40Speaker 2: and if we don't in this game, we won't the
- 7:42Speaker 2: rest of the year, I don't believe, because this, again,
- 7:46Speaker 2: is going to be the best roster we see. There's
- 7:48Speaker 2: going to be some rosters that are very similar when
- 7:50Speaker 2: we play Alabama, LSU, and even Texas A & M
- 7:55Speaker 2: that I'm a little less concerned about right now, even
- 7:58Speaker 2: though it's on the road after seeing Kentucky's game, but
- 8:01Speaker 2: this will be a huge test to see how Tennessee
- 8:04Speaker 2: handles this level of physicality.
- 8:07Speaker 1: When you talk about pressure from the defensive line and
- 8:10Speaker 1: trying to get after Arch, how confident are you that
- 8:12Speaker 1: they can get home with four?
- 8:14Speaker 3: Or do you think they'll have to bring some design blitzes?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Or is that defensive line, again, we only know what
- 8:21Speaker 1: we've seen so far, but thoughts around the ways that
- 8:23Speaker 1: they'll try and bring pressure?
- 8:26Speaker 2: I think they'll be able to put some pressure on
- 8:28Speaker 2: him because if UTSA had him worried, And I know
- 8:31Speaker 2: our defensive line's certainly as strong as theirs or more strong.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So we might be able to get some pressure on
- 8:36Speaker 2: him and force him to run and cause him to
- 8:40Speaker 2: maybe throw an interception or two. That would be really
- 8:43Speaker 2: helpful if you could get a turnover in Neyland. That
- 8:45Speaker 2: would just flip the crowd in a heartbeat. But I
- 8:50Speaker 2: really feel like pressure's going to be the key. You
- 8:52Speaker 2: cannot let him sit back there. That would just be
- 8:54Speaker 2: a travesty.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Yeah. When you.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Watched that LSU Ole Miss game. Were you surprised at
- 9:02Speaker 1: how that thing finished up? Did you think LSU was
- 9:06Speaker 1: going to go in and win? Or were you a
- 9:09Speaker 1: Trinidad believer before it even started?
- 9:11Speaker 2: I had them winning 34-31 Ole Miss. And I thought
- 9:15Speaker 2: it would be a field goal at the end with
- 9:16Speaker 2: Trinidad driving down the field and getting either into a
- 9:20Speaker 2: field goal or a touchdown or something along those lines
- 9:22Speaker 2: because I knew he was the better quarterback. I expected
- 9:25Speaker 2: Sam Levitt to run around like a gazelle, which is
- 9:27Speaker 2: exactly what he did, even though he was really doubtful,
- 9:32Speaker 2: very doubtful a couple of days before, but then he
- 9:35Speaker 2: was out there running a four, four 40 and, and, uh,
- 9:37Speaker 2: doing wind sprints. So I think he was okay. Trinidad. I,
- 9:42Speaker 2: that was what Lane Kiffin was worried about the most
- 9:45Speaker 2: was Trinidad Chandler. He was scared to death. Oh, cause
- 9:48Speaker 2: he knows him. He knows this is a winner and
- 9:51Speaker 2: a guy that will get you at the end. And
- 9:53Speaker 2: he said, it came true. You know, he was the
- 9:55Speaker 2: whole day. So that was my biggest concern. And, So
- 9:59Speaker 2: I was not surprised. old miss won great win for
- 10:01Speaker 2: them i was rooting for them not because i don't
- 10:04Speaker 2: like lsu because i don't like lane.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I think we may be.
- 10:10Speaker 1: We maybe drank a little too much Kool-Aid after that
- 10:13Speaker 1: Clemson win because Clemson is just a disaster. And I
- 10:16Speaker 1: still think LSU is good. I still think they can
- 10:18Speaker 1: go to the playoff. Not saying they will, but I
- 10:20Speaker 1: still think they can. But maybe LSU wasn't quite as
- 10:25Speaker 1: good as they showed in week one. And I think
- 10:26Speaker 1: a little bit of that showed up against Ole Miss.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I just think that Clemson.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I never expected Clemson to be this bad. They're atrocious
- 10:34Speaker 1: right now. They were lucky to get out with a
- 10:36Speaker 1: win this weekend against UNC, who is also bad. But
- 10:39Speaker 1: I was shocked at the, you know, not shocked at
- 10:42Speaker 1: the result Saturday, but just I'm shocked at how bad
- 10:44Speaker 1: Clemson is. And it makes that win by LSU in
- 10:47Speaker 1: week one certainly a little bit less impressive.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Clemson went into a buzzsaw and LSU, that crowd
- 10:54Speaker 2: was really excited and they just got pushed around. Really,
- 10:58Speaker 2: you know, where are the dogs? that Clemson always has
- 11:01Speaker 2: on the defensive line. They've always got some guys that
- 11:04Speaker 2: can really disrupt. I'm not seeing that out of that team. So, yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 2: LSU is a really good team. They're just not as
- 11:10Speaker 2: good as they were that first week because we got
- 11:13Speaker 2: thrown off a little bit with Clemson's poor play.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Were you surprised that they only won by a handful,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but Florida dominated Auburn this week?
- 11:24Speaker 3: I know it hurts to talk about this.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Almost as bad as it hurts to talk about FSU.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It's almost worse when your rival's good at the same time.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Florida's good. Their offense is really good. They're talented. And
- 11:37Speaker 3: Philo's a lot better than I thought he would be.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Philo, the film guy was high on him, said
- 11:42Speaker 2: he could really spin it. And normally that guy's pretty
- 11:45Speaker 2: spot on. And some are all, of course, we were
- 11:48Speaker 2: all hoping he would be Billy Napier 2.0. It sounds
- 11:51Speaker 2: like he's not going to be that. That's a good
- 11:53Speaker 2: win against Auburn. That Auburn defense has been stingy the
- 11:56Speaker 2: last few years, and they pushed them around pretty good.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Of course, they've got that running back that nobody can tackle.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 2: That dude's a problem, but yeah, I know the Florida fans,
- 12:06Speaker 2: they got to be pumped up. Yeah, they didn't get
- 12:08Speaker 2: their man, but maybe they got lucky, and Auburn had
- 12:11Speaker 2: John Summerall, and it just didn't work out for them,
- 12:15Speaker 2: so maybe it'll work out there, but Auburn's just like,
- 12:18Speaker 2: they're bad luck schlep rock right now.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah, for real.
- 12:22Speaker 1: The Florida stuff. You mentioned A & M. I was
- 12:25Speaker 1: shocked by that one. I think A & M was
- 12:28Speaker 1: stunned by it, too.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I couldn't believe that. I'll tell you who else. You
- 12:33Speaker 3: guys play Mississippi State?
- 12:35Speaker 2: No.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Thank God for y'all. I was like, dang. That guy's awesome.
- 12:41Speaker 1: That kid, I think he's the second best quarterback. I
- 12:43Speaker 1: don't want anybody else to get mad at me for
- 12:45Speaker 1: saying this. I think he's the second best quarterback in
- 12:47Speaker 1: the league right now. I think Trinidad's number one and
- 12:49Speaker 1: he's number two.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Maybe y'all ought to go after Jeff Libby and that quarterback.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Bring him in? Bring those two guys in.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'd take that in a heartbeat just to get one
- 12:58Speaker 1: year of him. Because then if you can recruit somebody
- 13:01Speaker 1: like that once, maybe you can grab another one and
- 13:03Speaker 1: keep it going.
- 13:03Speaker 3: But, yeah, no, he's really, really good. All right, I
- 13:07Speaker 3: know it's just Monday, so we've got a long way
- 13:09Speaker 3: to go.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But I was on an SEC show this morning, and
- 13:14Speaker 1: no rhyme or reason to it, but just because I'm
- 13:16Speaker 1: going to be there, I picked it.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I like Tennessee with the upset.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I think 30, 31, 28, 34, 31, something like that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I think Tennessee finds a way to get this done
- 13:26Speaker 1: at home. I think they're playing. I know Texas had
- 13:29Speaker 1: the win against Ohio state. but something about it, something
- 13:33Speaker 1: about going to New England. I think last year, I
- 13:36Speaker 1: don't really believe in karma, but I think the karma
- 13:38Speaker 1: of last year missing that kick against Georgia, I think
- 13:40Speaker 1: you get one to go your way this time, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think they pull the upset.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Are you drinking the Kool-Aid with me or not yet?
- 13:46Speaker 2: I might on this one. Arch's play last week gives
- 13:51Speaker 2: me a little bit of optimism that he may not
- 13:53Speaker 2: come in there and be dominant. Of course, we haven't
- 13:57Speaker 2: really seen Faison under this level of pressure, he might
- 14:01Speaker 2: come out and play reasonably well or really well. I
- 14:04Speaker 2: could see the crowd playing a major role in this,
- 14:07Speaker 2: and Texas has not been good on the road. They
- 14:09Speaker 2: just haven't been. They've struggled. So, yeah, I could see
- 14:14Speaker 2: Tennessee pulling this off.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Let's do it.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We're both drinking the Kool-Aid. Jay, I appreciate you for
- 14:21Speaker 1: hanging out. I know that you'll have a ton of stuff,
- 14:23Speaker 1: so make sure you guys are subscribed over there. On
