- 1:00Speaker 1: We all welcome this week's show. Apologies for missing last week.
- 1:03I was called out of town. I'm fairly unexpectedly. I
- 1:09thought I'd be able to do the show and I
- 1:12was not. But anyway, let's get back into where we were.
- 1:17We'll start with radio replies. We're talking about the Eucharist,
- 1:20and then we're going to get back into follow Spirago's
- 1:23writing on prayer. So the questioner asked the priests, are
- 1:28there any signs in the host proving that he is
- 1:32bodily preserved? And they say no, It is a mystery
- 1:35of faith. All external appearances remain as before consecration, but
- 1:42the substance of the bread, the substance of the wine
- 1:44are changed into the substance of Our Lord's body and blood.
- 1:47The reason why we believe is not in the host
- 1:50as such, but in God. He has revealed this truth,
- 1:53and we believe he must know and could not tell
- 1:56an untruth. Gosh, I had such a debate with a
- 2:00bunch of Protestants last night, and I mean, I'm really
- 2:04done with him. Honestly, you spent an hour debating, giving information,
- 2:09giving historical references. They refuse to believe it, They refuse
- 2:13to read it. They refuse to do anything but repeat
- 2:16anti Catholic, bigoted lies and then call you as my
- 2:20old friend Neil Boortz would say, everything but a son
- 2:23of God or child of God. He would say, wow,
- 2:28did we get into it over the Eucharist? And I said,
- 2:34if Jesus said it, it's true. If Jesus saidthing, it's untrue,
- 2:38he's not God, because by his word he can make
- 2:42all things into creation, he can change something substantially, substantively.
- 2:47I should say, if Jesus said something that wasn't true,
- 2:51he is not God. And your religion is false, your
- 2:56faith is false. You have no hope of going to heaven.
- 3:00And I mean, well, I believe this. And my preacher
- 3:04said that, and great, what did Jesus say? Well, he
- 3:08said it, but he didn't mean it. What do you
- 3:10mean he didn't mean it? Did say somewhere in the
- 3:13Bible that he said it but didn't mean it. No,
- 3:16he said it, he meant it. He repeated it so
- 3:18many times that most of his followers left thinking he
- 3:23was insane. If Jesus came to save souls, why would
- 3:27he repeat something that drove them away and into perdition.
- 3:35Jesus said it, Jesus meant it. Jesus can do it,
- 3:38because Jesus is God. You cannot limit the power of
- 3:43God by your own human preconceptions or limitations, or however
- 3:49want to say it. So anyway, the person continues very
- 3:51much that vein. Did not the Jews think that they
- 3:55were asked to eat the very body of Christ? Yet
- 3:58he refuted them, was saying that his body would ascend
- 4:00to heaven, and that the flesh profiteth to nothing. Yes,
- 4:04we got into that last night too. When they answer
- 4:07when Jesus promised that he would give his very flesh
- 4:10to eat, the Jews protested because they imagine a natural
- 4:14and cannibalistic eating of the Christ's body. Christ refuted this
- 4:18notion of the manner in which his flesh was to
- 4:20be received by saying that he would ascend in Heaven,
- 4:23not leaving his body in human form on earth. But
- 4:25he did not say that they were not to eat
- 4:28his actual body. He would thus contradict himself. For a
- 4:33little earlier he had said, my flesh is meat, indeed,
- 4:37and my blood is drink. Indeed, he meant, therefore, you
- 4:41will not be asked to eat my flesh in the
- 4:43horrible and natural way you think, for my body as
- 4:46you see it with your eyes, will be gone through
- 4:48this earth. Yet I shall leave my flesh and blood
- 4:53in another and supernatural way, which are natural and carnal
- 4:56minds cannot understand. The carnal or fleshly judgment profits nothing.
- 5:01I ask you, therefore, to have faith in me and
- 5:04to trust in me. It is the spirit of faith
- 5:06which will enable you to believe, not your natural judgment.
- 5:10Then the Gospel goes on to say that many would
- 5:13not believe and walked with him no more, just as
- 5:15many do today. They will not believe and walk no
- 5:19more with the Catholic Church. And according to the doctrine
- 5:22of the Catholic Church, Christ's body is ascended into Heaven,
- 5:26but by its substance, independently of all natural laws of space,
- 5:30which affects substance through accidental qualities. This body is present
- 5:34in every consecrated host. Person says, we Protestants believe that
- 5:39Christ's body is really present the Eucharist, but not by substantiation,
- 5:42And they answer the majority of Protestants believe that his
- 5:45Holy body is really absent. Those who do say they
- 5:48believe in his real presence yet deny transsubstantiation. Substantiation illogically
- 5:55admit an effect, yet deny the process by which it
- 5:58can occur if there be no trans trab substunch. Gosh,
- 6:04that sort of say, trans substantiation or conversion of the
- 6:09substance of bread to the substance of Christ's body, and
- 6:12then the substance of bread remains after consecration and is
- 6:16bread and not the body of Christ. Many people make
- 6:19a kind of bogie anyway. I'm not going to define
- 6:24bogie again. I think I did that last soon transubstantiation foolishly,
- 6:28as a man would do somewhat similarly if he admitted
- 6:31a railway from New York and San Francisco, yet refuse
- 6:34to admit that it could be called the trans constituent
- 6:38trans Continental Railway. My word, am I getting tongue died today?
- 6:46Person says the apostles creed the as a nausea and
- 6:49the n ic and do not mention transubsociation. There's no
- 6:52record in such a doctrin until fifteen sixty four, when
- 6:55Pious the Fourth put it into his creed. Are we
- 6:57to believe the early Christians or the doctrine of one
- 7:00thousand years later and they answer that's actually not true
- 7:04at all. I mean, many of the church fathers did
- 7:06write about the real presence. They had to refute the
- 7:10charges of the Romans who were and the Jews who
- 7:13were calling them cannibals. They had to really get into
- 7:15it in detail, in like the first one hundred two
- 7:18hundred years of the Church. But anyway, I say, the
- 7:21doctrine is not in the three Creeds you mentioned, but
- 7:24they do not contain the whole of Christian doctrine, their
- 7:26partial statements insisting upon certain doctrines against special errors of
- 7:31those times. It is true that Pope Pious four included
- 7:35the doctrines in the Profession of Faith, but you're wrong
- 7:38when you say that there was no mention of the
- 7:39doctrine until then fifteen fifty one, thirteen years earlier. The
- 7:43Council of Trent caught taught the doctrine explicitly twelve seventy four,
- 7:49two hundred and ninety years earlier, and the Second Council
- 7:51of Lyon insisted upon the admission of transistor of transubstantiation
- 8:00by the Greeks as a condition of they were returning
- 8:02to the Catholic Church. In twelve fifteen three hundred and
- 8:05forty nine years earlier, the Fourth Ladder and Council consecrated
- 8:09the word transubstantiation as expressly correcting the Christian doctrine of
- 8:14Christ's real presence by conversion of the substance of bread
- 8:17into the substance of his body. In ten seventy nine,
- 8:20five hundred years earlier, Berengarius declared in his retraction, I
- 8:27acknowledged that the bread is substantially changed into the substance
- 8:31of Christ's body. Everyone who possessed the true Christian faith
- 8:34into the year ten seventy nine believed in the substantial change,
- 8:40and there was no need to insist upon that word,
- 8:42since no one denied the nature of the change. In
- 8:45the fourth century, all the great fathers and writers admitted
- 8:48that by consecration bread was changed into our Word's very body.
- 8:53Ignacious Bishop of Antioch, who died about one seven a d. Wrote,
- 8:57heretics abstained from the u UUs because they did not
- 9:01confess the Eucharus to be the flesh of Jesus Christ,
- 9:04which suffered for us, and the doctrine is all that
- 9:07is expressed by transubstantiation. At the last super Christ said
- 9:11this is my body which is given for you. Now,
- 9:14he either gave them his body or he did not.
- 9:17But he gave them his body. For we dare not say, Lord,
- 9:21although you say this is my body, is certainly not
- 9:23your body. However, it was not his body according to
- 9:27appearances and the visible qualities, and it could have been
- 9:32his body only according to substance. Therefore, our Lord, our
- 9:36Lord first taught this doctrine a substantial change, at least implicitly.
- 9:43Person continues, The elements do not change, for there is
- 9:46no chemical difference after consecration. And they ask the answer,
- 9:50I should say, which elements do not change in every
- 9:53material things? Here two sets of elements quite distinct, substance
- 9:57in qualities, And no man has ever seen substance. He
- 10:01has seen qualities only. Thus, I see the squareness of
- 10:05a block of iron, but it can become round, still
- 10:08remaining iron. I can feel its hardness, though it can
- 10:11become soft in a furnace, the substance being unchanged. If
- 10:15it be black, it can become red. If it be cold,
- 10:18it can become hot. If it be heavy, it can
- 10:21by great heat. I can render it a vapor. The
- 10:24qualities then differ from the substance or we could not
- 10:27change without changing, but we cannot change one without changing
- 10:30the other. And if we can change the qualities without
- 10:33can changing the substance, God can certainly change the substance
- 10:37without changing the qualities. Any chemical differences are dependent upon quantities, granted,
- 10:44the permits of the same accidental qualities, and the same
- 10:47chemical reactions will be apparent. Father Faber, whilst yet an
- 10:51Anglican well said, I am worried about the Roman doctrine,
- 10:54because whatever may be said of the proofs for it,
- 10:58I do not see how any man can dis prove it.
- 11:01If they say that the substance changes, but all that
- 11:03all appearances remain the same, then they say something changes
- 11:07of which no man has any experience. And yet then reason,
- 11:14and yet which reason must postulate as the reality underlying
- 11:20all appearances and separate from them. When you say that
- 11:23the elements do not change their chemical properties, I simply
- 11:26reply that the elements of external qualities do not change
- 11:28their chemical properties, and the no Catholic has ever imagined
- 11:31they do. But the substance underlying those external appearances certainly
- 11:38does change. The fact that changes is revealed by God
- 11:43and cannot be known in any other way, Yet it
- 11:47is not more than yet is it not more than sufficient?
- 11:50Granted when God says so, yes, if God said it,
- 11:53it's true. Ah. We'll wrap this one up with the
- 11:57last question. Here we have only the word of a priest.
- 11:59For the fact they say no, No Catholic Christ would
- 12:02himself believe it. Were it not the doctrine of Christ.
- 12:06It would be the height of folly to believe it
- 12:08without solid evidence that Christ had taught it. God created substance,
- 12:11a qualities, and we cannot deny him perfect control over
- 12:15them and ability to change them at his pleasure. And
- 12:18when Christ says this is my body, we have to
- 12:21accuse him of falsehood, or else admit that his body
- 12:26not according to the senses, but according to other lying substance,
- 12:29which is imperceptible to men, no imperceptible the senses of men.
- 12:34All right, So all right, let's get into Fallows sparaga.
- 12:38We are still discussing prayer. I think we'll wrap this
- 12:41one up today. Really interesting kind of question to us. Now,
- 12:49he asks where ought we to pray? You may think, well,
- 12:53we pray everywhere, and yes we do. But remember prayers
- 12:56were to be offered in the Temple in Jerusalem for
- 12:59the Jews is actually that was like the main division
- 13:04between the Jews and the Samarians. Samaritans, we can and
- 13:09ought to pray in every place, because God is everywhere present.
- 13:14Our Lord himself prayed not only in the Temple of
- 13:16Jerusalem and in synagogues, but also in the desert and
- 13:18on mountains and of the senecle, in the garden of Olives,
- 13:21and on the cross. Jacob prayed in the open hill country.
- 13:25Jonas and the belly of a whale, Job on the dunghill,
- 13:28Daniel in the lions den Manassas in prison, Paul and
- 13:31Silas lying bound in a dudgeon, praised, prayed and praised God,
- 13:36so the foundations of the prison were shaken. We can
- 13:39only speak with God when he is present, and He
- 13:42is present everywhere. Remember our Lord's words to the woman
- 13:46of Samaria John four twenty three. God does not regard
- 13:51the place in which we pray, but the dispositions with
- 13:54which we pray. Yeah, sip of water here, I'm getting
- 13:57so tongue tied. I haven't taken anty Hissamans because the
- 14:01pear trees that are in bloom, they're just driving me crazy.
- 14:06It makes my mouth try, it makes me makes it
- 14:10hard to do a podcast. I can tell you that
- 14:12the House of God is the place specially set apart
- 14:15for prayer. The House of God is the house of prayer. Matthew,
- 14:18twenty one thirteen. Some say there's no need to go
- 14:21to church because the whole earth is the temple of God.
- 14:23This is false. God enjoins upon us by the month
- 14:27of the church, by the sorry God enjoys joins upon
- 14:31us by the mouth of the church, to go to
- 14:34His house on Sundays and festivals. Our Lord himself set
- 14:38us an example in this respect, for he was often
- 14:40to be found in the temple in Jerusalem. Petitions offered
- 14:44in a church have greater efficacy because the place is consecrated,
- 14:48and we can also pray with more devotion because our
- 14:51surroundings are an aid to recollection, and we can put
- 14:53aside our daily cares. Besides, the prayers we offer in
- 14:57church are heard more quickly by Our Lord because Our
- 15:00Lord is present under the eucharistic veils in the eucharists.
- 15:04In other words, he has promised that where two or
- 15:07three are gathered together in My name, there I am
- 15:09in the midst of them, and he will help us
- 15:11to pray right. However, it is not through the is
- 15:15not thought that true piety exists. In spending long hours
- 15:19in the church a solitary praise. The place is also
- 15:22suitable for prayer. Our Lord was accustomed to withdraw into
- 15:27solitude for prayer. He prayed in the desert Luke five sixteen,
- 15:30on the mountains, in the garden of Olives Luke twenty
- 15:33two thirty nine. He bids us retire into our chamber
- 15:36and shut the door Matthew six six For in solitude
- 15:39one is less likely to be distracted, and one can
- 15:42pray more fervently. For what ought we pray? We ought
- 15:46to implore God. Of God many things and great things,
- 15:50benefits not appertaining to time so much as to eternity.
- 15:53Supposing a king said to you, ask what you will,
- 15:56would you not ask a great favor of him? Well,
- 15:58it is nothing more than what God says to you.
- 16:02We ought to ask great things of God because we
- 16:04have to do with one who is infinitely rich and powerful.
- 16:08Let us not be contented with what we've already received,
- 16:12but ever beg for more. God is more ready to
- 16:15give than we are to receive. Let us not ask
- 16:18so much for temporal and transitory benefits, but rather for
- 16:21those that are eternal. No one would presume to ask
- 16:25an emperor what was for what was useless and worthless.
- 16:30Much less should we venture to implore the Lord of
- 16:33heaven and earth for the things of time and sense.
- 16:36It is the act of a fool to treasure up
- 16:38worthless shells and cast away precious pearls, to choose glittering
- 16:42tensil rather than pure gold. Let us, therefore, pray for
- 16:45the joys of heaven, and whatsoever will help us attain them.
- 16:49We ought more especially to beseech Almighty God to grant
- 16:53us such things as are conducive to His glory and
- 16:57to our salvation, And in no way ask for what
- 17:00will only serve to gratify our earthly desires. Those who
- 17:04pray to those who pray, our Lord says, seek he
- 17:08first the Kingdom of God and his justice, and all
- 17:10these things shall be added to you Matthew five thirty three.
- 17:14Hence we may conclude that if we ask for the
- 17:16good things of eternity, those of time will also be
- 17:19bestowed upon us. King Solomon prayed for wisdom to govern
- 17:23his people are right. God gave him a wise and
- 17:26understanding heart, and in addition earthly riches and glory in
- 17:30abundance the Third King's three. It is not ready to
- 17:34ask of God, what is only to only calculate to
- 17:37gratify our earthly concubiscences. Such prayers are not granted James
- 17:41four to three. There are many, says Saint Augustine, who
- 17:45in what they asked, and not seek God's glory. But
- 17:48they are unsensual pleasures. They would degrade God to be
- 17:50their servant and the servant of their covetousness, their pride,
- 17:53their avariceness, avarice. Okay, they're luxury. Quick try I mean,
- 18:01I keep stumbling over words. I'm just gonna go on
- 18:03as dry mouth as dryman nuts King Jered Balham's hand
- 18:07was withered because he stretched it out against the man
- 18:09of God. He prayed that his hand might be restored,
- 18:12not that his sins may be forgiven. That was the
- 18:14Third King's thirteen to six. Many do likewise, and their
- 18:18prayers they think only of the needs that the body,
- 18:20not those of the soul. Let us never pray that
- 18:23our will, but that God's will will be done. Let
- 18:27us not wish for the accomplishment of those desires which
- 18:30arise from our fallen nature, but those with which the
- 18:34Holy Spirit inspires the soul. And now he talks about
- 18:38Christian meditation, and this is such a confusing subject for many.
- 18:47I would highly recommend Saint Tereso Vivilla's Internal Castle, Saint
- 18:53Francis de sALS. Oh, gosh was that book. His first
- 18:58two books were very much on the subject, and I
- 19:03am blanking on their names. But anyway, let's see what
- 19:06fathers Barago says. Meditation i e. Co Contemplative prayer consists
- 19:13in dwelling upon the truths of religion in order to
- 19:15awaken within our minds good resolutions. Okay. In other words,
- 19:21this is not prayers a petition where we're asking God something.
- 19:26We're thinking about God, we could be considering a moment
- 19:32in his life. The Rosary is a meditative prayer. When
- 19:36we pray the Rosary, we're thinking about the various what
- 19:44twenty yes, twenty instances twenty times in the life of Christ,
- 19:50and we're thinking about what he did and what he
- 19:52accomplished and what we hope for through that. That's a
- 19:57meditative prayer. That's something that's very Catholic that not many
- 20:03Protestants ever even consider. Now, I will say that if
- 20:08one were to pick up the Bible and read a
- 20:10chapter and then think about it, they are doing meditative prayer.
- 20:15But most times, I don't know. I don't know. Petitionary
- 20:22prayers are one thing. There's this like modern idea of
- 20:26like raising up your hands and saying, you know, Lord, Lord,
- 20:30worship you. I love you. That's great. That's not actually prayer.
- 20:39That's that is a disposition of devotion. That's wonderful, Okay,
- 20:45always good to praise the name of God. Prayer. The
- 20:51word prayer comes from the Latin prakata pracatas to ask.
- 20:59So when you know protests say, why do you pray
- 21:03to saints? You're not you shouldn't worship a saint, We say, no, no,
- 21:06we don't worship a saying we worship God. But the
- 21:09saints are alive in heaven as we are alive on earth.
- 21:12They're Christians, they're members of the body of Christ, and
- 21:16we ask them to pray for us. That is prayer.
- 21:21When we ask of God something that is actually prayer.
- 21:26When we praise the name of God, that is praise
- 21:31that's not actually worshiped. That worship is actually a very
- 21:34different act. Worship involves sacrifice. When we meditate on the
- 21:46life of Christ, on the teachings of Jesus through the
- 21:50Bible or through the Catholic Church, on the nature of God,
- 21:54on Gosh, so many things. That is a form of
- 22:00prayer in that the spirit asks for enlightenment, even though
- 22:09we're not asking give us this stair daily bread. Okay,
- 22:12so meditation is considered prayer, but not all prayer is meditation.
- 22:19Meditation is an aspect of the interior life. It can
- 22:24be silent, perfectly silent, like if you've been to adoration.
- 22:29You're sitting before the host and the Eucharistic coast and
- 22:33you're just in pure mental silence. You're not speaking, you're
- 22:38not thinking, You're waiting for God to act. That's incredibly hard.
- 22:46That's really essentially the highest form of prayer is interior silence.
- 22:53That can be very hard to explain to people. They think,
- 22:56you know, you have to have an act of will.
- 22:59But when we say, not my will, but thine, interior
- 23:03silence can actually be the most powerful and meaningful act
- 23:09of prayer. But anyway, okay, So what does Father Sparagus
- 23:13say about meditation? Costly spices give out their rama most
- 23:18freely when they are bruised and the mortar crushed up
- 23:21in a murder pestle. So the truth of religion have
- 23:24the most influence upon the soul that ponders on them
- 23:27who meditates upon the holy things. He is like a
- 23:30man striking fire with flint and steel. He strikes his
- 23:34stony heart with the keen edge of the understanding until
- 23:38sparks fly out. That is, good resolutions are elicited from
- 23:42his will. Meditation is only difficult until the Holy Spirit
- 23:46makes his gracious action felt and well. It can become
- 23:55difficult again because God will give us periods of spiritual
- 23:58dryness to form our faith. Essentially. Saint Teresa of Calcutta,
- 24:06for instance, spirits decades of spiritual dryness. Saint Teresa Villa
- 24:12talks about it very very much. So to Saint Francis
- 24:15sou So Padre Pio, I could go on and on
- 24:17and on. God often to those who love him most,
- 24:23to whom he loves most will withdraw his consolations. You
- 24:27will get no pleasure from prayer, you will get no inspiration.
- 24:33But there's times, you're being tested and tried and made
- 24:39into a better Christian if you stick with it. If
- 24:42you stop, all is lost. It's like I said to
- 24:45my friend Alyssa the other day. She's going through a
- 24:47horrible time, and I said, there's an old saying when
- 24:52you're going through hell, keep going. When you're going through hell,
- 24:56keep going. If you stop, you're going to stay in hell.
- 24:58If you keep going, you're gonna get the other side.
- 25:01She said, you know, I'm so tired, I'm so upset,
- 25:04I'm so disappointed. I'm having trouble praying. And I said,
- 25:08you got to just keep doing it. You know, if
- 25:11you stop, this is where you're going to stay, and
- 25:13you don't want to be in this place. So that's
- 25:18very very much the case, especially with people that are
- 25:21like at a higher level of meditative prayer. You know,
- 25:26once they are actually what you might call visionaries or something,
- 25:30they can go through really bad times. Us simple folks,
- 25:35we don't have anywhere as near as hard. I will
- 25:39not claim to be good at meditative prayer. I will
- 25:42not claim to be a visionary. All have had some experiences.
- 25:49I'm not going to discuss right now. You have to
- 25:54just keep praying. And if you cannot stay in that
- 25:58silent add or tion of God, if you cannot concentrate
- 26:03on thinking about the life of Christ or the Passion
- 26:08and the resurrection, whatever, that's when verbal vocal prayers are
- 26:13are incredibly useful. You can still pray the Our Father.
- 26:16You know, you can say the prayers that the Church
- 26:18has given us, and that's really good enough. When the
- 26:25apostles ask Jesus how to pray, he gave them the
- 26:28Our Father. There will never be a time when that's
- 26:31not appropriate, when it's not the best prayer actually, so anyway,
- 26:38so you know, bottom line is there are higher levels
- 26:41of prayer that include meditation, that are mostly meditative prayers,
- 26:47but they're not always possible and they're not always appropriate.
- 26:52Sant Jose Maria Screeva that talk to tell you should
- 26:55pray and work say prayers while you're working, well, Resa
- 27:00is well, but many different Bernard, I think many different
- 27:05saints wrote about this. You cannot do intense meditative prayer
- 27:14while you're driving. Your mind is literally in a different place.
- 27:19You can, to some extent, you can, but not in
- 27:23that intense like visionary way. You really do have to.
- 27:28I mean if you're swinging a hammer, you got to
- 27:30make sure you're not hitting your fingers. You can absolutely
- 27:32pray the Rosary while you're swinging a hammer. I've done
- 27:38that many times. I mean, really, we can work and
- 27:41pray at the same time. We cannot necessarily work and meditate. Well,
- 27:45we can work and contemplate, but that's particular type of
- 27:53prayer really does require concentration, silence if you a lot
- 28:02of times you just really need to pay attention to
- 28:03what you're doing if somebody's going to get hurt. Right.
- 28:06So anyway, that's why we have different ways of praying.
- 28:08So what did he say? Meditation? Yeah, like a vessel
- 28:12that must be propelled by toilsome rowing until a favorable
- 28:16wind springs up and inflates her sales. Then the ore
- 28:19is no longer needed, for she runs swiftly before the breeze.
- 28:23So in meditation, the powers of the mind must be
- 28:25exercised laboriously into the holy ghost breeze upon the soul,
- 28:29guiding it and elevating it. If we strive to elicit
- 28:33a succession of beautiful thoughts and elaborate meanings, this is
- 28:36not prayer but study. When once we have struck fire.
- 28:40Let us toil no more, but forthwith kindle the torch.
- 28:44In other words, let God take over and guide your mind,
- 28:48your soul wherever it needs to go by mental prayer.
- 28:53Let's see, meditation is a most excellent method of prayer,
- 28:56but it must not be pursued to the exclusion of
- 28:59vote prayer. By mental prayer, we imitate on earth the
- 29:03occupation of the angels, who constantly contemplate the face of
- 29:06God and meditate upon his perfections. The Saints have bequeathed
- 29:11to us many books of meditations. If we read these attentively,
- 29:14it is equivalent to prayer. Mental prayer must alternate with
- 29:18vocal prayer. These two methods of prayer are the feet
- 29:21that carries forward on the way to Heaven. Meditation is
- 29:24a necessary preliminary to prayer. Without it, prayer will be imperfect,
- 29:29the needful devotions will be lasting. M Yeah, all right,
- 29:35we'll stop there. Hey, actually next week, oh gosh, sliding
- 29:42down on my chair here. Next week, well, we'll have
- 29:47one more on prayer, but it's gonna be a little different.
- 29:49Instead of talking about prayer, Father Sparago actually gives us
- 29:54some prayers, and these are great of course, he starts
- 29:58with Our Father, the most important prayer there is, and
- 30:02then he gets into some other really good prayers to
- 30:08learn to memorize, to write down. I would absolutely take notes.
- 30:12On next week's show. We will start with the Our
- 30:15Father and then we're going to do the Rosary and
- 30:17the Angelus. This is it's not going to be wrapped
- 30:21up at one show. I mean, he tells you about
- 30:25every single sentence in the Our Father. He explains and
- 30:29tells why it's important. This is gosh, this is really important. Actually,
- 30:35this is yeah, this is this is something we as
- 30:42Catholics have access to that most other Christians do. Not.
- 30:45Let me finish with this section. He said, by means
- 30:49of meditation, we obtain actual graces and advance rapidly on
- 30:52the path to perfection. We obtain many actual graces in meditation.
- 30:57For as we receive light and warmth when we stand
- 30:59by a fire, so meditation upon the truth of religion
- 31:02in the mind is enlightened. The mind is enlightened to
- 31:06see the worthy worthlessness of earthly things, the end of man,
- 31:10the rigor of divine judgments, and the heart is inflame
- 31:13with the love of justice. It is a furnace wherein
- 31:16the fire of charity is kindled, a door whereby divine
- 31:19grace enters into the heart of man. A soul that
- 31:22practices meditation is like a cultivated field which produces abundant fruit,
- 31:27a well watered garden in which flowers bloom luxuriantly. He
- 31:31who neglects to ponder upon the truce of religion knows
- 31:34nothing of their force. His spiritual sight is dimmed. He
- 31:37is engrossed for the things of the earth with desolation.
- 31:42Is all land made desolate because there is none that
- 31:45considereeth in his heart. Jeremiah twelve two No. Eleven, twelve eleven.
- 31:51The subjects chosen for meditation ought to be those which
- 31:54have the most power to attract and influence us, and
- 31:58these should frequently recur. Thus bees a light up in
- 32:01the flower which contains the sweetish juice when they make
- 32:04their honey. Meditation is a means of attaining perfection. Saint
- 32:08Ambrose says daily meditation is the antidote for tipidity. It
- 32:13was the foundation of the conversion of Saint Ignatius and
- 32:15other saints. Saint Teresa declares mental prayer and mortal sin
- 32:20are incompatible. They exclude one another. One or the other
- 32:25must of necessity be given up. So prayer is very important.
- 32:30And yeah again, I'm going to tell you. This book
- 32:35is available on archive dot org. It is Father of
- 32:38Sparago's exhaustive explanation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
- 32:42written in the eighteen well published in the eighteen nineties,
- 32:45probably written in the eighteen eighties. There's some wonderful prayers
- 32:48in this book. We're going to get into those starting
- 32:52next week. Y'all have an excellent week, stay strong in
- 32:58your linten devots, and I will talk to you next time.
- 33:02And let me say, don't forget what Father Jose Maria
- 33:06Screeva will constantly admonished his readers. You will fail. You've
- 33:15made you know, you've decided, you're gonna do this for lent.
- 33:17You're gonna be better, you're gonna spend more time in prayer.
- 33:19You're gonna fast. You will fail. You will fail. Nobody
- 33:24gets through it perfectly. When you do, say you're sorry,
- 33:30pray to our Father and move on. Just try harder,
- 33:34don't beat yourself up, do not dwell on it whatsoever.
- 33:38The more thought, the more intent, the more energy mental energy.
- 33:43You give that failing, the more it's gonna hurt you.
- 33:48Pray and our Father ask forgiveness. Move on, don't don't
- 33:51bring it to mind again. Don't tell other people about it.
- 33:55Go to confession if you need to, obviously, and move on.
- 34:01Very very important. Remember Saint Fustine Kualska when her priests
- 34:08asked her to prove she was actually speaking with Jesus.
- 34:12He said, if it's actually Jesus asking what I said
- 34:15the last time I went to confession, she did, and
- 34:18Jesus said, I have forgotten. No, it's not possible for
- 34:21God to forget anything, but that is the power of
- 34:25the absolution of God. If he forgives and forgets, you
- 34:29have to do the same for yourself. Now you have
- 34:33to guard and don't let it happen again. You have
- 34:35to try. You have to make an act of will
- 34:38to amend your life. But beating yourself up thinking about
- 34:41the past is fruitless. Jesus said, you know, the man
- 34:45who puts his hand on the plow and looks backwards
- 34:47not fit for the kingdom of heaven. A lot of
- 34:49our greatest saints have been horrible sinners. I mean, someone
- 34:53were murderers. You have to ask D's forgiveness, Lay it
- 34:58down and do better. Try to do better. You're probably
- 35:01gonna screw up again. You're probably gonna do the same
- 35:04stupid thing a thousand times, but each time, steal your
- 35:08resolve and try harder not to do it the next time.
- 35:12Have a great week, y'all. I talk to you next time.
