- 1:43what I want to do?
- 1:43I want to go ahead and kick this
- 1:46show off.
- 1:48So let's get to it.
- 1:51All right, everyone, again, a big welcome.
- 1:54So what's really holding you back?
- 1:58The truth you keep avoiding, series five, show
- 2:0142, episode number one, it's Saturday.
- 2:03Welcome to the ever popular inspirations for your
- 2:05life show.
- 2:06I'm John Seymour, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist,
- 2:09video producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate
- 2:13lifelong learner, graduate student at Montclair State University,
- 2:17and so grateful now to be a published
- 2:19author.
- 2:20Today I begin a new week.
- 2:23Stop waiting for a sign.
- 2:25Your freedom starts with action.
- 2:27But before that, you can understand and break
- 2:35free.
- 2:36You need to recognize what's holding you back
- 2:40at this moment.
- 2:41Some barriers are obvious.
- 2:43Others hide in familiar routines, old stories, and
- 2:47in the way we talk to ourselves.
- 2:52We're exploring 30 ideas today.
- 2:55Listen for the one that sounds like you.
- 3:01Number one, yes.
- 3:05Number one, I think is a very important
- 3:08thing, and that is that recognizing that not
- 3:14every limitation is visible to our naked eyes.
- 3:17You can have an option to see an
- 3:20open door in front of you and still
- 3:22feel unable to walk through it.
- 3:25Ask what's stopping you at this very moment.
- 3:30Number two, some of your strongest barriers exist
- 3:34in your thinking.
- 3:36A belief like you're not ready can become
- 3:40a well, even when you have the skills
- 3:45to begin.
- 3:47Number three, guys, stop confusing familiar patterns with
- 3:51healthy ones.
- 3:51Just because you've done something for years doesn't
- 3:55mean it's helping you grow.
- 3:56And I think a lot of people, you
- 3:58know, they get tied in that phase, like,
- 4:00oh, my gosh, what am I going to
- 4:01do?
- 4:01What can I do now?
- 4:02That's a big problem for a lot of
- 4:03people.
- 4:04They don't realize that even though they're stuck,
- 4:07they made themselves stuck.
- 4:09And they're the choice of whether they're going
- 4:10to stay stuck or get unstuck.
- 4:12So we really have to understand that.
- 4:15Number four, guys, identify early what repeatedly makes
- 4:19you hesitate in life.
- 4:21Is it uncertainty?
- 4:23Is it embarrassment?
- 4:24Or is it fear of making the wrong
- 4:28decision?
- 4:29And what's fear?
- 4:30False evidence appearing real.
- 4:33Give that hesitation a name, all right?
- 4:37Number five, ask whether fear is protecting you
- 4:41or restricting you.
- 4:43Most time we think it's protecting us, but
- 4:45really, it's actually restricting us.
- 4:48Fear can alert us to genuine danger.
- 4:51But it can also keep us from reasonable
- 4:54opportunities in life.
- 4:55I think that brings a lot of people
- 4:58to a point saying, like, I can't do
- 4:59this anymore.
- 5:00I don't know what to do.
- 5:01And it comes down to that whole question,
- 5:03right?
- 5:04It comes down to that whole big question.
- 5:06Number six, notice the excuses you keep repeating.
- 5:10I don't have time.
- 5:12Maybe true sometimes.
- 5:15Other times, it means you haven't made the
- 5:17goal a priority yet.
- 5:21Number seven, examine where you surrender control unnecessarily.
- 5:27You can't control every outcome, but you can
- 5:30choose your next response.
- 5:33Number eight, recognize when comfort has become confinement.
- 5:39A predictable routine can feel safe while quietly
- 5:43shrinking what you believe is possible.
- 5:48I think people don't understand that our beliefs
- 5:51become reality.
- 5:53Our thoughts become things, all right?
- 5:57It's not like it's going to happen tomorrow.
- 5:59Like, if you suddenly wish for an elephant
- 6:02to appear in your living room, that elephant's,
- 6:05there's a delay factor.
- 6:06You're not going to see the elephant right
- 6:07away.
- 6:09But our actions are going to move toward
- 6:11that when we keep thinking about it, right?
- 6:14Number eight, recognize when comfort has become a
- 6:18sentence of confinement.
- 6:19A predictable routine can feel safe while quietly
- 6:23shrinking what you believe is actually possible.
- 6:28Number nine, stop allowing yesterday's experiences to define
- 6:33tomorrow.
- 6:34A past disappointment is information, not a permanent
- 6:38prediction of your future and the trajectory of
- 6:41where you're going.
- 6:43Number 10, identify the beliefs you've accepted without
- 6:48questioning them.
- 6:49Who taught you what you supposedly can't do?
- 6:54Is that a belief still supported by facts?
- 6:57Or have you just taken on that belief
- 7:01because of some fallacy in your life?
- 7:05Number 11, guys, please notice whose expectations influence
- 7:09your decisions.
- 7:11Respect others?
- 7:12Absolutely.
- 7:13But don't let their preferences become the blueprint
- 7:16for your own life.
- 7:19Number 12, separate genuine responsibilities from imagined obligations.
- 7:25Some commitments are real.
- 7:27Others are pressures you've assumed without ever examining
- 7:32them.
- 7:32And I think that gets a lot of
- 7:34people stuck.
- 7:35Not because, again, they want to be stuck.
- 7:37But they get stuck because of something that
- 7:39has transpired in their life.
- 7:41Like, oh my gosh, what do I do?
- 7:42What do I say?
- 7:44And it's not hard, guys.
- 7:46It's just it's becoming aware.
- 7:48It's recognizing what's going on in your life.
- 7:50I think that's a very important thing for
- 7:53us to realize, that it's something in our
- 7:58lives.
- 7:58It's something that can really take us to
- 8:01another point.
- 8:02Number 12, separate genuine responsibilities from the imagined
- 8:07obligations that you seemingly now have.
- 8:10Some commitments are real.
- 8:12Others are pressures you've assumed without ever examining
- 8:18them.
- 8:20I think that's another important piece.
- 8:24Number 13, please recognize the difference between caution
- 8:29and avoidance.
- 8:32Caution helps you prepare.
- 8:35Avoidance keeps you planning forever without moving.
- 8:38It keeps you stuck.
- 8:38It keeps you in that procrastination zone where
- 8:41you never, ever do anything.
- 8:42You ever hear somebody say to you, oh,
- 8:43you know, I'll do it tomorrow or I'll
- 8:45get to it next week.
- 8:45But next week comes and then they keep
- 8:48changing what the heck they're doing.
- 8:50What's really going on?
- 8:51I mean, why do people lead themselves down
- 8:55this path?
- 8:56I can tell you.
- 8:57It's because they feel that they're doing something.
- 9:03And the mind says, OK, you're doing something
- 9:04or I'll leave you alone.
- 9:06But it's a trick to basically not do
- 9:09anything.
- 9:11Number 14, guys, pay attention to opportunities you
- 9:14consistently reject.
- 9:15Is the opportunity wrong for you?
- 9:18Or does it simply challenge the identity you've
- 9:23grown comfortable with?
- 9:26I think that's an important piece.
- 9:28Number 15, notice how self-doubt influences your
- 9:34choices.
- 9:36Doubt may speak loudly, OK, but volume doesn't
- 9:41make it accurate.
- 9:44Look for evidence of your capabilities.
- 9:48I think although we have the ability to
- 9:53think on our own, many people will, you
- 9:57know, suck up whatever they can find.
- 10:00And I think that's a very important piece
- 10:02that many people, I'm going to say, don't
- 10:05really understand.
- 10:06Not because they don't want to understand it,
- 10:08but because they feel this is the way
- 10:13to go.
- 10:14That's what they do.
- 10:15They feel it's the way to go.
- 10:17And that becomes a very, very big problem.
- 10:22I think that's a very important thing, guys,
- 10:25a very, very important thing.
- 10:28So number 16, stop treating temporary emotions as
- 10:33permanent truths.
- 10:34Feeling discouraged today doesn't mean you're incapable tomorrow.
- 10:40I want to go back to the story
- 10:41I've told many times about the elephant, the
- 10:44elephant that was a baby calf elephant.
- 10:47And the elephant was never able to break
- 10:49free from this little tiny metal rod and
- 10:53chain.
- 10:55It's because the elephant was chained to that
- 10:57when it was a baby calf.
- 11:00And then after a while, it just never
- 11:03tried again.
- 11:04And see, we do that with our minds.
- 11:07We don't try anymore.
- 11:10But we've grown.
- 11:12And now we can do the thing that
- 11:14we couldn't do before.
- 11:16Number 17, identify the environment that reinforces all
- 11:22behaviors.
- 11:23Your surroundings influence your choices.
- 11:27What could you rearrange to support better ones
- 11:31for you?
- 11:32I mean, is it a simple shift?
- 11:34Is it a pivot?
- 11:35What is it in your life?
- 11:38I think that could really change some things
- 11:40for you, right?
- 11:43That's important to know.
- 11:46But it does get people scared.
- 11:51Your surrounding influences your choices.
- 11:54And I said, what could you rearrange to
- 11:56support better ones?
- 11:58And don't lose sleep over this.
- 12:01But just ponder and say, wait, maybe there's
- 12:03something I could do differently.
- 12:04Maybe I could do something in a different
- 12:05order.
- 12:07Maybe I can cut something out of my
- 12:09life.
- 12:09These are the kinds of questions we want
- 12:11to be asking ourselves.
- 12:13And just do it very lightly, very easily.
- 12:17And you'll be like, wait a minute, this
- 12:18makes sense.
- 12:21It makes sense, OK?
- 12:25Think about that.
- 12:26Be kind to yourself.
- 12:28I can't say that enough.
- 12:30Number 18, recognize relationships that discourage healthy growth.
- 12:38Not everyone will understand your ambitions, your goals,
- 12:43your desires.
- 12:45Seek people who can challenge you respectfully and
- 12:49support your development.
- 12:51It's OK to agree to disagree.
- 12:53But don't be a jerk about it, right?
- 12:58You know, being kind may not always be
- 13:02easy.
- 13:02It is free, OK?
- 13:05So you can be kind.
- 13:07And it doesn't cost anything.
- 13:09It might require you to just get rid
- 13:11of your ego.
- 13:14That's important.
- 13:22It's important to understand.
- 13:28And I think sometimes people do something because
- 13:33they think it's going to be the right
- 13:36way.
- 13:36But really, it's not.
- 13:41And that's something that I think a lot
- 13:42of people just don't understand.
- 13:47They see something one way.
- 13:49And they don't change the way they think
- 13:52about it.
- 13:53They just feel that that's the only way.
- 13:56But that might not be the only way.
- 13:58There may be a better way.
- 14:03So seek people who can challenge you respectfully.
- 14:06And I know that's not something that's easy.
- 14:10You might stick around someone because they don't,
- 14:13because they give you basically a time that
- 14:17makes everything flow for you, even though they
- 14:19may not be the best for you.
- 14:20That's an important thing.
- 14:24So think about that for just a moment,
- 14:27OK?
- 14:28Think about what that means.
- 14:34Think about what that really means.
- 14:39And I can tell you that it's something
- 14:42that a lot of people today just get
- 14:45stuck on so much.
- 14:47And they get stuck on it because they
- 14:50don't know any other way to go.
- 14:53They don't know any other way to go.
- 15:00We don't know.
- 15:01They don't know any other way to go.
- 15:03And that may be a challenge for, again,
- 15:06a lot of people, a lot of people
- 15:11that want to be able to move forward,
- 15:16right?
- 15:16I think that's an important piece that maybe
- 15:21you're missing in your life.
- 15:26Number 19, notice where you keep asking for
- 15:32reassurance.
- 15:33Advice is useful, but asking the same question
- 15:37repeatedly may be a way to postpone responsibility.
- 15:46Maybe.
- 15:46Maybe.
- 15:48And you're saying, well, I only do it
- 15:49once in a while.
- 15:52Even if you do it repeatedly more than
- 15:54once or twice, you're in a pattern, guys,
- 15:57and that pattern is a problem.
- 16:06Think about that for a moment.
- 16:14I think that's something that a lot of
- 16:15us don't think about, right?
- 16:24Think about what that means to you.
- 16:27Think about what you could do.
- 16:32Think about how that affects you.
- 16:45Think about how that's gonna change you.
- 16:46I think some
- 16:56people don't understand like what this all means.
- 17:05And then they push themselves back to say,
- 17:08hey, what are we really doing?
- 17:12What are we really doing?
- 17:16And again, that can cause lots of problems
- 17:21for people.
- 17:25It's not meant to, but it does.
- 17:30It causes people to basically lose hope for
- 17:37what it is they're trying to do, losing
- 17:42hope for what it is they're trying to
- 17:44do.
- 17:50I think sometimes people like just don't necessarily
- 17:54get it.
- 18:00And I think if we just become aware
- 18:03of something, that alone will get us to
- 18:06a new point by noticing.
- 18:10As I said, advice is useful, but if
- 18:13we ask the same question repeatedly, we're just
- 18:17cleverly postponing our own accountability.
- 18:24Number 20, guys, understand that awareness is not
- 18:26the same as self-criticism.
- 18:29We're identifying patterns to improve our choices, not
- 18:32collecting reasons to feel bad about ourselves.
- 18:37Not everybody in this world is gonna like
- 18:39us, okay?
- 18:41And we're not here to change them, but
- 18:45I think it's important to know that awareness
- 18:48makes the difference.
- 18:57It makes the difference.
- 19:04And that's a very, very big difference for
- 19:07people if they could understand what that means
- 19:11or how that means something.
- 19:14But I know that some of you out
- 19:16there are saying, John, this can't be the
- 19:20way.
- 19:22You're sabotaging yourself by keeping you from the
- 19:28promised land.
- 19:29Number 21, guys, look for patterns instead of
- 19:33the isolated mistakes.
- 19:34One missed deadline is an event.
- 19:37Repeatedly missing deadlines may reveal a system that
- 19:40needs attention, a behavior that needs correcting, adjusting.
- 19:46Number 22, please recognize when you're waiting for
- 19:51permission.
- 19:52Sometimes no one is going to hand you
- 19:55a green light.
- 19:56You may need a choice to choose a
- 19:59responsible first step.
- 20:04Important, guys, very, very important.
- 20:09Number 23, ask what you would attempt without
- 20:16fear of judgment.
- 20:20Had a situation today with an event I
- 20:22was running and all of us were together
- 20:25on one side of the hayride.
- 20:30And these other two people that were in
- 20:32our group, instead of sitting with all of
- 20:35us, they went all the way to the
- 20:37far end of the hayride.
- 20:41And you know the funny reason why they
- 20:42did it?
- 20:45They did it because one of the people
- 20:48on our ride was a different skin color.
- 20:55I mean, that's crazy.
- 20:56What happened to inclusivity?
- 20:59Then we had other things we're doing, they
- 21:02took off and they didn't even come to
- 21:05lunch.
- 21:09I think before we throw a stone, we
- 21:12really need to look at ourself.
- 21:14Number 24, identify what staying stuck is costing
- 21:20you.
- 21:21Maybe it's not money, maybe it's relationships, maybe
- 21:24it's respect, reputation.
- 21:28Consider the lost time missed learning and the
- 21:32energy spent replaying the same doubts in your
- 21:35head over and over and over again.
- 21:38Number 25, stop minimizing your own potential.
- 21:43You don't need to claim you're capable of
- 21:46everything.
- 21:47You already are.
- 21:48Just stop dismissing what you could realistically learn.
- 21:52Number 26, understand that recognizing a problem creates
- 21:57options.
- 21:58When you can name the pattern, you could
- 22:01test a different response instead of repeating it
- 22:04automatically.
- 22:09Einstein said, doing the same thing over and
- 22:12over again, expecting results, what is that?
- 22:13That's insanity.
- 22:15None of us are intentionally insane.
- 22:17Number 27 guys, be willing to question your
- 22:22familiar story.
- 22:25That's how I am, might describe yesterday, but
- 22:28that doesn't have to dictate tomorrow.
- 22:32That's how it always goes.
- 22:34That's how I live.
- 22:36That's my personality.
- 22:39That's just the way it's gonna be.
- 22:42That's how I roll.
- 22:45That's how I live.
- 22:46You get the point.
- 22:51And we have to understand that, that phrase
- 22:54we tell ourselves can change.
- 22:58Number 28 guys, please, please, please accept responsibility
- 23:03without blaming yourself for everything around you.
- 23:06You aren't responsible for every obstacle, but you
- 23:09can still decide what to do next.
- 23:10Now today, I wasn't responsible for what these
- 23:13people did to the rest of the group
- 23:15and how rude they were.
- 23:17I needed to let go.
- 23:20Even though I wasn't happy with it, I
- 23:22needed to let go and I needed to
- 23:23let go of that energy.
- 23:25It's wasting energy to even think about it.
- 23:28But I wanted to share the lesson with
- 23:29you guys.
- 23:30Don't discriminate race, religion, color, orientation.
- 23:34Number 28, accept responsibility without blaming yourself for
- 23:39everything.
- 23:40You aren't responsible for every obstacle, but you
- 23:42can still decide what to do next.
- 23:47Number 29, name one pattern you're ready to
- 23:53change.
- 23:53Right this very moment.
- 23:56Make it specific, delaying difficult calls, seeking approval
- 24:01or abandoning goals when progress feels like it's
- 24:05slowed down or stopped.
- 24:08Number 30, remember ladies and gentlemen that awareness
- 24:11is the beginning of our own freedom.
- 24:16You don't have to fix your entire life
- 24:18today or even tomorrow.
- 24:20You need to see clearly enough to take
- 24:23one honest step at a time.
- 24:25You don't need to become an expert, but
- 24:28you do need to realize that the key
- 24:30to success is awareness.
- 24:35Does that hit home for you?
- 24:37I hope it does.
- 24:38So ladies and gentlemen, here is your Saturday
- 24:41challenge.
- 24:42Are you ready for it?
- 24:44Write down one, just one, recurring pattern that
- 24:50you notice, which may be limiting your own
- 24:54growth.
- 24:56Okay?
- 24:57Again, it's just one pattern.
- 25:02Importantly, gentlemen, do not, under any circumstances, judge
- 25:07yourself.
- 25:10Ask instead, what triggers it?
- 25:14What is this costing me?
- 25:17And what healthy responses could I practice next
- 25:23time?
- 25:24How can I adjust?
- 25:25Don't beat yourself up because you did it
- 25:27wrong or because it's not the way you
- 25:29want.
- 25:31That's not gonna solve the problem.
- 25:33That's just gonna drive you deeper into the
- 25:35hole.
- 25:38I think that's an important piece.
- 25:43But I don't expect everybody to become an
- 25:47expert on this overnight.
- 25:49It might take you days, might take you
- 25:51weeks, may take you months before you actually
- 25:54realize that, hey, wait a minute, I've actually
- 25:56got this.
- 25:57I understand this.
- 25:59I didn't realize that when I'm aware, my
- 26:01life changes.
- 26:03My life changes.
- 26:05Now, the reason why people don't wanna change
- 26:07is they're afraid that maybe they can't live
- 26:12up to that new change, that new responsibility,
- 26:15right?
- 26:15I think that's the hardest thing for a
- 26:19lot of people because they're afraid that it
- 26:21might not do what they want.
- 26:23And if it can't do what they want,
- 26:24they're gonna be like really, really sad.
- 26:29That's important, guys.
- 26:33That is important.
- 26:35So ask what triggers it.
- 26:38What's it costing you?
- 26:40And how do you do something different next
- 26:42time you could practice?
- 26:43So today, ladies and gentlemen, we recognized tomorrow
- 26:49we'll choose.
- 26:51On Monday, we're gonna break free.
- 26:54On Tuesday, we're gonna stand firm.
- 26:58On Wednesday, we're gonna trust.
- 27:02On Thursday, we'll rise again.
- 27:06And Friday, we'll live free.
- 27:10See, that's our journey this week.
- 27:11I wanted to share that up front so
- 27:13you kind of know what's coming.
- 27:15Ladies and gentlemen, if you do not know
- 27:17who I am, I am John Seymour.
- 27:20A serial entrepreneur, author, engineer, and so much
- 27:23more.
- 27:23And I thank you so very much for
- 27:26taking this time to spend with me and
- 27:30learn about something very precious, what's holding you
- 27:34back.
- 27:36Remember, ladies and gentlemen, you cannot change what
- 27:40you refuse to recognize.
- 27:43Let me say that again.
- 27:45You cannot change what you refuse to recognize.
- 27:49Stay driven, okay?
- 27:52Keep growing.
- 27:54And know that this is a process and
- 27:59it's not gonna happen overnight.
- 28:00And I'll see you guys on another show
- 28:02real soon.
- 28:02Be well, everyone, and take care.
