- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike chris Pino joined by Dan
- 0:04Hurley. A little bit later on, we'll talk to one of the Huskies
- 0:06players. Coach. We've seen three games now on the season, Huskies rolling
- 0:11up points and winning big and obviously you expect that against some of these opponents,
- 0:16but the meat grinders coming up. So where are you at in terms
- 0:21of where the team is at and what you've been able to accomplish here in
- 0:24these first three games. I think for the you know, for the most
- 0:28part, you know, we could draw from the three games and then the
- 0:36you know, the two closed, closed games that we played, and you
- 0:41know, have a have a decent feel I think for you know, the
- 0:46best direction to go with the team, I think obviously, uh, you
- 0:52know that this team is gonna you have to answer questions I think relative to
- 0:57you know, the depth, you know, and then trying to also to
- 1:03you know, maybe cann this group play with the defensive edge and the rebounding
- 1:07toughness that it takes, you know, to be a truly an elite team.
- 1:11I think offensively, there's you know, there's great potential there, especially
- 1:15with the healthy staff You've got five guys, and there are five starters that
- 1:23can get fifteen, eighteen, twenty or more on any given night. So
- 1:29you know, I like what I've seen. I didn't like the Mississippi Valley
- 1:32State game necessarily, but I feel pretty good about where we're at. You
- 1:38know, a couple of guys that you asked to step up this year and
- 1:41make a leap of Alex Caraban, for one, I think has been doing
- 1:46that. So how do you assess what's happening with that? I thought it
- 1:48was pretty impressive at the Civic Center the EXL. He played with four fouls,
- 1:53He played with a fowel trouble most of the game, and yet it
- 1:56didn't really impact what he was doing out there. Well, he can't,
- 2:02you know, he can't put himself or put us in that position, you
- 2:07know, to commit those fouls to pick up you know, two fouls before
- 2:10the first media timeout from a guy that we need to be like an all
- 2:15conference level player, you know, you know, replace the level of like
- 2:23a Jordan, of like an Adama in terms of making a big second year
- 2:27jump. Can't then pick up your third foul in the first in the first
- 2:31half. You know, we need Alex to be able to play. You
- 2:36know, Alex is going to lead us in minutes again this year like he
- 2:38did last year, and we can't afford for him to be in foul trouble.
- 2:44He should make the statistical uh you know, jump but you can't do
- 2:47that if you're committing you know, you're fouling jump shooters and putting yourself in
- 2:53a bad spot. Yeah, Dan Hurley with us on the UKUM Men's Basketball
- 2:57Coaches Show. I thought that that Mississippi Valley State game was a game you
- 3:00could experiment maybe a little bit, keep him in there, see if he
- 3:04can play with fouel issues. Am I reading your mind right on that one?
- 3:07I mean I wasn't even really you're it was about just getting him enough
- 3:14minutes so that going into the Indiana game he's ready to play thirty plus minutes
- 3:21of game minutes. So it was obviously it wasn't a very threatening game.
- 3:27It was an opportunity. I think it is an opportunity for you to,
- 3:31you know, to look at some different lineups, get some young guys,
- 3:35experience your work worked on some things when you're not under that full game pressure,
- 3:42you know, so that it gives you the luxury you're playing a game
- 3:45like that of still being able to play him without the pressure the game,
- 3:51pressure, decision making. Donovan Klingon missed a bunch of time coach, with
- 3:55the foot problem, back playing practicing. How do you assess his first few
- 4:01games? Someone asked me this and I I didn't have a good answer,
- 4:05So I'm coming to you with this one. Is he one hundred percent?
- 4:08Physically? He's getting there? You missed a lot of time, and I
- 4:13think I think physically he's one hundred percent. I think his you know,
- 4:16from a skill standpoint, in terms of sharpness, it's not He's not all
- 4:24the way back to how he was playing, uh, you know, pre
- 4:28injury, you know, but he uh, I think all things considered,
- 4:34uh, you know, I think he looks kind of how he should look
- 4:40at this point. We need him, you know, need him on the
- 4:44backboard right now, need him to continue to work on his low low post,
- 4:47like you know, pre catch and positioning and his his ability to to
- 4:55you know, to attack the rim. I think these are things that you
- 5:00know. I don't think it's injury stuff that you've seen right now. Like
- 5:02I think what you're seeing is a guy who's beginning his sophomore year, his
- 5:06very high expectations for and you know, it's been a very similar way to
- 5:13Jordan the way he started his sophomore year. He was a much different player
- 5:17at the end of the year as a sophomore than he was at the beginning.
- 5:19Yeah, I like that. That's a good a good assessment of that.
- 5:24For sure. He was seven of eight in the game. He got
- 5:26to the line nine times, more than anybody, but he only made three.
- 5:30I cannot figure it out. You watch it every day. I saw
- 5:32him in high school a bunch. He always made his free throws, and
- 5:35now he's shooting fifty sixty percent. I mean, he's gonna have to get
- 5:39better at that. No, Yeah, And it's you know, it's for
- 5:46a seven to two guy at this point in his career, that's he should
- 5:51not be thinking about his shooting a whole lot. He should be thinking about,
- 5:57you know, you know, protecting the rim, you know, posting
- 6:00up, deep finishing through contact finishing with you know, working on his left
- 6:04hand, doing all these different things because he naturally has has has really nice
- 6:11touch and he's got a very nice shooting form. But I think it's it's
- 6:15got in his head a little bit. You know, he's got to he's
- 6:18got to focus on his routine. He's got to focus on his breathing.
- 6:21And I think he's just you know, in free throw shooting, you've got
- 6:25to kind of compact your shooting form, and and and and make sure that
- 6:30you don't you know, you want to compact your form when you get to
- 6:33the fat line. It can't be a long motion. And I think his
- 6:38motion has just gotten a little bit too long. When your motion is long,
- 6:43that there's more chances for you to have technical mistakes. Yeah. Back
- 6:47with the Knicks, when I was there at Mike dan Toni koach, we
- 6:49had a shot doctor for a while. Do you have anything like that on
- 6:54the staff? No, I don't. I don't need that. You don't
- 7:00want that, all right, Dan? Early with us that gets complicated,
- 7:04trust me, I watched it early with US. Yukon men's basketball coaches show
