Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to another Radio Archive Hour here from the
- 0:02Speaker 1: world-famous Phil Henry Show. And we've got Lloyd Bonafide, who
- 0:06Speaker 1: was a very, very popular character when we were first, you.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Know, talking to Lloyd.
- 0:10Speaker 1: But because of his age and the Korean War, he
- 0:13Speaker 1: doesn't want to come on here with us anymore.
- 0:15Speaker 2: What are you going to do? But this is Lloyd
- 0:17Speaker 2: from a few years back. I think this is 2002.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And he says that it's worthless talking about how bad
- 0:24Speaker 1: senior citizens are at driving because no one's going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: put them in jail. And Lloyd heads up an organization
- 0:30Speaker 1: of retired drivers, retired senior citizen drivers. He says nobody
- 0:34Speaker 1: is going to take the time to put us in jail, so,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and I'm quoting him.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Bury your dead and move on. Here's Lloyd.
- 0:42Speaker 3: National Association of Retired Motorists representative Lloyd Bonafide, he's actually
- 0:46Speaker 3: press relations for the National Association of Retired Motorists, is
- 0:50Speaker 3: on the line with us so we can talk about
- 0:52Speaker 3: senior citizens and senior citizens driving.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Well, it was a tragedy, Mr. Henry, but it is
- 1:00Speaker 4: our official feeling that bringing this out on a national
- 1:03Speaker 4: radio program serves no purpose because the event took place
- 1:07Speaker 4: in Los Angeles and has no real bearing on the
- 1:11Speaker 4: rest of the country. And I think that we will
- 1:15Speaker 4: clean our laundry here. I don't think you need to
- 1:18Speaker 4: be talking about it.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, I'm talking about it because really what we're talking
- 1:22Speaker 3: about is senior citizens driving cars.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Is it safe.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Well i i i don't think the question is relevant
- 1:31Speaker 4: because uh.
- 1:32Speaker 2: why isn't it relevant the question.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Is irrelevant because the the we we are living our
- 1:39Speaker 4: lives were contributing to our communities we fought for our
- 1:42Speaker 4: freedom in in some instances as members of the armed
- 1:45Speaker 4: forces and many of you people are swimming in the
- 1:49Speaker 4: very freedom that many of us laid our lives down
- 1:52Speaker 4: for we've made our mistakes I think we just need
- 1:55Speaker 4: to move on from them. You bury your dead and
- 1:59Speaker 4: you move on.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Well, bury the dead and move on.
- 2:02Speaker 3: My question for you was, don't you think you represent
- 2:05Speaker 3: an association of retired motorists, of senior citizens, correct?
- 2:09Speaker 4: That is correct, yes.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Don't you think that there should be a national mandatory
- 2:13Speaker 3: testing of senior citizen drivers, some of whom are dangerous?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Now, we just had a woman drive into a crowd
- 2:20Speaker 2: of schoolchildren.
- 2:22Speaker 3: In Los Angeles yesterday, there has been instances of senior
- 2:25Speaker 3: citizens killing, in some cases, pedestrians because they have lost control.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Of the car. So don't you.
- 2:34Speaker 4: What is your question?
- 2:35Speaker 3: My question is, don't you think it's time that we
- 2:39Speaker 3: test them uniformly to get their driving skills back up
- 2:43Speaker 3: to par?
- 2:43Speaker 4: Well, Mr. Henry, you can ask for it, but we
- 2:48Speaker 4: won't cooperate. We don't have to cooperate.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Why don't you have to cooperate?
- 2:55Speaker 4: Because no court in America is going to put a
- 2:57Speaker 4: senior citizen in jail. I'm 70 years of age. Most
- 3:02Speaker 4: of the people that we represent are over the age
- 3:04Speaker 4: of 70. You're not going to have a senior citizen
- 3:07Speaker 4: put into jail. If you look around you, these people
- 3:10Speaker 4: that kill the senior citizens you claim are killing, but
- 3:13Speaker 4: I don't deny that we are killing, and we're probably
- 3:16Speaker 4: killing at a record clip given the fact that there's
- 3:20Speaker 4: more of us on the road.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Well, you're saying that like that's no big deal.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Well, I don't want to comment on whether it's a
- 3:28Speaker 4: big deal or not. You're just never going to get us.
- 3:30Speaker 4: There's no court that's going to put us in jail.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Can you prove that statement that no court is going to?
- 3:37Speaker 4: You know as well as I do that when an 80-
- 3:39Speaker 4: or a 70-year-old motorist kills someone, through no fault of
- 3:46Speaker 4: their own, I might add, they never go to jail.
- 3:49Speaker 4: What you know, the most that we're going to get
- 3:51Speaker 4: is probation. The best thing you can do is bury
- 3:55Speaker 4: your debt and move on because it's admittedly unfortunate, but nonetheless,
- 4:00Speaker 4: accidental vehicular homicide is something you're not going to charge
- 4:06Speaker 4: a senior citizen for.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Give me your proof.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Well, if I can tell you, let me say this
- 4:14Speaker 4: to you. I was involved in a fatality.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Were you driving?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Let me finish. I was involved in a... I'm 70
- 4:22Speaker 4: years of age, and I'm telling you, I'm not in
- 4:24Speaker 4: jail today because the courts feel sorry for senior citizens,
- 4:29Speaker 4: and so they don't put us in jail.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Tell me about what you did.
- 4:34Speaker 4: I was in an automobile. It was two worlds colliding,
- 4:38Speaker 4: but my wife and I were on a fixed income,
- 4:40Speaker 4: and I had an opportunity to help my family. I
- 4:44Speaker 4: was racing to this meeting... A young woman... Boy, when
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think about it, it's sad. A young woman, not
- 4:52Speaker 4: much older than my own daughter, walked out into the crosswalk.
- 4:56Speaker 4: She was pushing a baby stroller right into the path
- 4:59Speaker 4: of my RV.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You hit her?
- 5:02Speaker 4: I hit her. I was probably doing about 40 or
- 5:05Speaker 4: 45 miles an hour.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You hit, and did you kill her?
- 5:10Speaker 4: She died, yes. And I told her husband later, he
- 5:12Speaker 4: was a young man, I said... You know, his name,
- 5:15Speaker 4: in fact, his name was Phil, like yours. I said, Phil,
- 5:19Speaker 4: just bury her and the child and let's move on.
- 5:23Speaker 4: You know, the sun comes, there's a song, Phil, I
- 5:26Speaker 4: don't know. The sun comes out tomorrow, bet your bottom, darling.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yes, it's from Annie.
- 5:32Speaker 4: That's what the National Association of Retired Motorists says. If
- 5:37Speaker 4: a senior citizen or one of the elderly... kills one
- 5:42Speaker 4: of your relatives or one of your children, and it
- 5:45Speaker 4: could happen from a recreational vehicle because many of us
- 5:48Speaker 4: drive them, just bury her and move on. Because.
- 5:53Speaker 2: When you say her.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Most of the time, the child that's killed is, for
- 5:59Speaker 4: some reason, it's a female child. I don't know why,
- 6:01Speaker 4: and it's the mother because the husbands are at work.
- 6:05Speaker 4: So the ones that we hit and kill are generally housewives...
- 6:10Speaker 4: It's a very terrible thing. It's a very terrible thing.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Well, all right, the National Association of Retired Motorists then says,
- 6:17Speaker 3: we're sorry if the seniors and the elderly are hitting
- 6:21Speaker 3: and killing people with their cars, but you're never going
- 6:23Speaker 3: to put us in jail because no court in the land.
- 6:26Speaker 4: No court in the land is going to imprison for
- 6:29Speaker 4: any length of time a senior citizen. Most will get
- 6:32Speaker 4: his probation. Now, what we have offered... is if one
- 6:39Speaker 4: of your relatives is killed by a senior citizen who
- 6:42Speaker 4: lost control of their car and you want to have
- 6:45Speaker 4: that relative cremated, we'll pick up the cost of that.
- 6:50Speaker 4: We have a lot of people on fixed income, so
- 6:53Speaker 4: we can't pay for the whole funeral, but we'll pick
- 6:55Speaker 4: up the cost of the cremation.
- 6:57Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to give our phone number out here.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm going to give our phone number out, Mr. Bonafide. 1-800-449-8686. 1-800-449-8686.
- 7:08Speaker 3: The reason why we have him on is he is
- 7:12Speaker 3: representing an association of retired motorists, senior citizens driving cars.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Should they be tested? Should their skills be tested? We
- 7:19Speaker 3: had an incident yesterday. A senior citizen drove into a
- 7:22Speaker 3: crowd of kids. There are other incidents where senior citizens
- 7:25Speaker 3: lose control of their cars.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Mr. Henry, if I could interrupt.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 7:30Speaker 4: We don't have much time left, so if.
- 7:34Speaker 4: This is hard for you to understand, but if we
- 7:36Speaker 4: accidentally kill someone, we don't have much time left.
- 7:41Speaker 3: So if you accidentally kill somebody, what are we, those
- 7:44Speaker 3: of us who are related to that person.
- 7:46Speaker 2: What are we.
- 7:46Speaker 4: The best thing to do is to bury you dead
- 7:49Speaker 4: and move on because you're not... Well, what do you want.
- 7:52Speaker 3: What I would like to see, if anybody, I don't
- 7:54Speaker 3: care what the age, get prosecuted and put into jail.
- 7:57Speaker 4: No, no, they're not going to do that.
- 8:00Speaker 2: What happened to you, by the way?
- 8:03Speaker 4: When I hit this young woman, I got probation.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Probation. How old were you?
- 8:09Speaker 4: I was 69 years of age. But I can tell you,
- 8:12Speaker 4: I got to, I felt bad about it. I got
- 8:15Speaker 4: to Santa Anita that afternoon.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You said you were on your way to a business meeting, sir?
- 8:21Speaker 4: I was on my way to a, it was a
- 8:23Speaker 4: financial opportunity is what I said.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Santa Anita is a horse racing track. What were you
- 8:28Speaker 2: doing there?
- 8:29Speaker 4: There was a horse going in the fifth. His name
- 8:32Speaker 4: was Red and Gray, and I think Don Pierce was
- 8:36Speaker 4: on top, and we had an opportunity at 7 to 1.
- 8:39Speaker 2: That's not a business opportunity, sir.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Sir, I'm a Korean War veteran, and I'd appreciate it
- 8:45Speaker 4: if you'd speak to me with respect.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I'm sorry, sir, but that doesn't sound like a business opportunity.
- 8:50Speaker 4: It was an opportunity to make some money.
- 8:55Speaker 3: You made it to Santa Anita the same afternoon that
- 8:58Speaker 3: you hit and killed a woman.
- 9:00Speaker 4: That is correct.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Did the police just let you go?
- 9:03Speaker 4: I didn't stop. I went.
- 9:06Speaker 2: So it was a hit and run?
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yes, sir, it was. I'm not saying it was the
- 9:10Speaker 4: right decision.
- 9:12Speaker 3: All right, so you hit the woman, you kill her,
- 9:14Speaker 3: you go to Santa Anita, you lay down your money
- 9:15Speaker 3: on this horse.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Did the police arrest you?
- 9:18Speaker 4: They came to my home the next day, yes, sir.
- 9:21Speaker 2: How did the police know it was you?
- 9:23Speaker 4: The investigating detective said that they had found a scrap
- 9:26Speaker 4: of the... And this is difficult for me to say
- 9:29Speaker 4: because I'm not proud of what happened. They found a
- 9:33Speaker 4: scrap of the baby's blanket on the front fender. And
- 9:37Speaker 4: part of it wedged in the headlight. It was on
- 9:40Speaker 4: the right front.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Good God.
- 9:43Speaker 4: It was difficult, yes.
- 9:46Speaker 2: How did you feel when they arrested you?
- 9:48Speaker 4: I said to the officer, I said, I feel bad,
- 9:51Speaker 4: but you know as well as I do, I'm going
- 9:53Speaker 4: to walk.
- 9:55Speaker 2: You're going to walk. Is that the official position of
- 9:57Speaker 2: your organization?
- 9:58Speaker 4: The official position of our organization is that we shouldn't
- 10:01Speaker 4: be hitting and killing people, but if we do, we
- 10:04Speaker 4: need to just move on because no court in the
- 10:07Speaker 4: land is going to send a senior citizen to prison
- 10:10Speaker 4: because nobody wants to see their grandmother or grandfather go
- 10:14Speaker 4: to jail. Now, I fought for my country. But I
- 10:19Speaker 4: also know that I'm an old man, and when I
- 10:21Speaker 4: stand in front of a judge on television, people feel
- 10:24Speaker 4: sorry for me because I look like their granddad or
- 10:28Speaker 4: someone who taught them how to play baseball. Even though
- 10:31Speaker 4: I killed a woman doing 45 miles an hour by RV,
- 10:35Speaker 4: and they found bits and straps of the baby blanket
- 10:38Speaker 4: wedged in the headlight. Our slogan is, we're seniors, we're sorry.
- 10:47Speaker 2: You're kidding, right?
- 10:48Speaker 4: No, sir.
- 10:49Speaker 2: We're seniors, and we're sorry.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Because we have been inundated with people trying to make
- 10:54Speaker 4: us feel guilty for growing older for a long time.
- 10:59Speaker 2: All right, 1-800-449-8686, the number on the Phil Henry Show. Darrell,
- 11:03Speaker 2: go ahead.
- 11:04Speaker 5: I can't really believe what I'm hearing this gentleman say.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Especially that slogan, we're seniors and we're sorry.
- 11:09Speaker 4: We have been made to feel sorry our entire lives.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Sir, I really believe that the legal system is not
- 11:16Speaker 5: going to allow you to continue to mow over people
- 11:20Speaker 5: in the road.
- 11:20Speaker 4: How many people do you see in their senior citizens
- 11:24Speaker 4: prosecuted for this?
- 11:25Speaker 5: I see a lot of them now.
- 11:26Speaker 6: The case in point... Yes, sir.
- 11:28Speaker 5: The case in point is.
- 11:29Speaker 4: They don't go to prison. Well, I'll tell you, they put.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Into prison those elderly people who are killing their spouses
- 11:36Speaker 5: for the reason that they can't take care of them.
- 11:38Speaker 2: All right, well, we're talking about the automobile. Is that right?
- 11:41Speaker 5: Well, I think legally he's misinformed. I believe that if
- 11:44Speaker 5: you're going to have vehicular manslaughter, they're going to put.
- 11:47Speaker 4: You away in jail. There's no way that they put
- 11:50Speaker 4: anybody who's over the age of 70 in prison. They
- 11:52Speaker 4: give us probation. Now, I'm sorry about the young woman.
- 11:56Speaker 4: But I'm walking around today.
- 11:58Speaker 5: I'm going to find out tomorrow. I'm going to make
- 12:01Speaker 5: it my business tomorrow.
- 12:02Speaker 4: To find out whether or not.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Legally what you're talking about is correct.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Well, is it.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Legal to let a guy like you walk out of
- 12:10Speaker 3: a courtroom if you've hit.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Look, the judge gave me probation. What do you want
- 12:14Speaker 4: me to tell you? Is it legal? I guess it is.
- 12:17Speaker 4: The judge gave me probation.
- 12:19Speaker 5: He didn't take away your license.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Yes, it was suspended for a year.
- 12:24Speaker 5: For a year only?
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am. Well, what are you going to do? You
- 12:28Speaker 4: think a suspended driver's license is going to keep me
- 12:31Speaker 4: from driving?
- 12:32Speaker 5: Well, I think that you should be put away permanently.
- 12:35Speaker 5: That's the answer that you're going to give.
- 12:37Speaker 4: But what we have tried to do is show a
- 12:39Speaker 4: sensitivity to the situation.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Well, offering to pick up the cost of cremation.
- 12:44Speaker 5: You are showing no sensitivity whatsoever. You're saying you're going
- 12:48Speaker 5: to go out there and do this again. And nobody
- 12:52Speaker 5: can stop you.
- 12:52Speaker 4: I'm not intentionally targeting anyone. I would never lay a
- 12:56Speaker 4: hand on anyone.
- 12:56Speaker 5: When you get behind the wheel, sir, that's exactly what
- 12:59Speaker 5: you're doing.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Can I ask you a question? Sure. She gets out
- 13:04Speaker 4: in front of me with a baby stroller.
- 13:06Speaker 2: She had a green light, you said.
- 13:08Speaker 4: She had a green light, but I had just... And
- 13:10Speaker 4: you said you were speeding. I had just had a
- 13:13Speaker 4: yellow light, and I was trying to make it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But she had.
- 13:15Speaker 5: You jumped a yellow light. You're not supposed to do that.
- 13:18Speaker 5: You were at fault. You killed a woman with a baby.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Do you know that if it hadn't been... Sir, you're.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Not going to get away from the fact that you
- 13:29Speaker 5: did this, and you are responsible. If the justice system
- 13:33Speaker 5: let you walk, I don't know what kind of a
- 13:36Speaker 5: world we're living in. I have to hang up now.
- 13:38Speaker 4: That woman was the one who pushed that kid out
- 13:40Speaker 4: into traffic, and I didn't.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I think the most ghoulish aspect of this is that
- 13:45Speaker 3: the police tracked you down by finding bits of that
- 13:48Speaker 3: baby blanket.
- 13:49Speaker 2: as you say, wedged in the headlight.
- 13:51Speaker 4: They said it was jammed up in the headlight, yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Parts of the baby blanket and the baby pajama. But apparently,
- 13:59Speaker 4: the police told me that the child suffered from Down syndrome,
- 14:04Speaker 4: and I went home after I talked to the police.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I said to my wife, who I've been married to
- 14:11Speaker 4: for 47 years.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Look it, sir, I'm a.
- 14:16Speaker 4: No, no, let me finish. And I told her that
- 14:20Speaker 4: the baby had Down syndrome, but my wife said, why
- 14:25Speaker 4: would God want a child like that to live anyway?
- 14:29Speaker 2: I understand that you are feeling emotional. Please don't use GD, okay?
- 14:33Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 14:35Speaker 3: And what do you mean your wife said maybe God
- 14:37Speaker 3: didn't want the baby to live anyway?
- 14:39Speaker 4: It had mongoloid symptoms. It had symptoms of mongoloid.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Hold the line, please. 1-800-449-8686.
- 14:48Speaker 3: This is very emotional. Lloyd Bonafide, president of the National
- 14:54Speaker 3: Association of Retired Motorists. If you're a senior citizen, you
- 14:58Speaker 3: hit and kill somebody. As there are many seniors out
- 15:01Speaker 3: there who are driving unsafely, according to Mr. Bonafide's organization,
- 15:06Speaker 3: what's the point of arresting them? No judge, no jury,
- 15:10Speaker 3: no court in the land is going to give prison
- 15:12Speaker 3: to a kindly old elderly senior citizen. And he goes
- 15:17Speaker 3: on to say that he himself was involved in a fatality.
- 15:21Speaker 3: His Winnebago hit a mother and a baby crossing a crosswalk,
- 15:27Speaker 3: and he kept right on going to Santa Anita so
- 15:29Speaker 3: he could get a bet laid on the fifth race.
- 15:31Speaker 3: The cops found him the next day because they found
- 15:33Speaker 3: the baby's blanket and pajamas wedged in his right headlight.
- 15:39Speaker 2: God. 1-800-449-8686, The Phil Hendry Show.
- 16:02Speaker 5: 1-800-449-8686.
- 16:10Speaker 2: This is the Phil Henry Show.
- 16:15Speaker 3: With me is Lloyd Bonify, president of the National Association
- 16:19Speaker 3: of Retired Motorists.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yesterday in Los Angeles.
- 16:22Speaker 3: A woman of 65 drove into a crowd of school
- 16:25Speaker 3: kids by accident.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Some were seriously injured. Thank God there were no fatalities, Mr. Bonafide.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Oh, well, you see, you didn't mention that.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I didn't mention there were any fatalities, but there have
- 16:38Speaker 3: been fatalities. You've been involved in.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Fatalities, right?
- 16:43Speaker 4: But you didn't mention the Los Angeles woman. She didn't
- 16:47Speaker 4: kill anyone.
- 16:48Speaker 2: No, she did not. But it could have been.
- 16:51Speaker 4: See, why don't you keep your own dirty laundry to
- 16:55Speaker 4: yourself and quit making everything sound like it's worse?
- 17:00Speaker 3: The fact of the matter is, you said you hit
- 17:03Speaker 3: a woman and then you drove.
- 17:05Speaker 2: To the racetrack.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I felt terrible about that, as I've tried to tell you,
- 17:11Speaker 4: but I... Let me ask you. You've got a sure
- 17:15Speaker 4: thing in the fifth race. And you hit, and yes,
- 17:19Speaker 4: you kill a woman and a child. it gives you pause.
- 17:23Speaker 4: You don't know which way to go.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I know exactly what I would do, sir.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Have you fought for this country in Korea?
- 17:30Speaker 3: No.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Then I don't... I killed... I killed a woman and
- 17:35Speaker 4: a half of a person. The child was... Because it's
- 17:39Speaker 4: a child, it's a half of a person. And it.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Well, all right.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Look, I didn't fight in Korea and I didn't fight
- 17:47Speaker 3: in World War II, so maybe I got no call
- 17:49Speaker 3: to say what I would do, but I'm telling you,
- 17:52Speaker 3: I hit a woman or I've got a horse in
- 17:53Speaker 3: the fifth.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I think I'm going to stop for the woman.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Easy for a young man to say.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Perhaps, sir. Let me go to Harry on the Phil
- 18:01Speaker 2: Henry Show. Harry, go ahead.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Mr. Bonifide. Yes, sir.
- 18:06Speaker 7: I'm a Korean veteran. I'm 68 years old.
- 18:08Speaker 4: God bless you.
- 18:09Speaker 7: I suppose I'm a senior citizen. But I think one
- 18:13Speaker 7: thing we have to remember, driving is a privilege and
- 18:17Speaker 7: not a right. We are responsible for our actions.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Well, what is that supposed to mean? It simply means
- 18:24Speaker 4: you do.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Not have a right to drive.
- 18:28Speaker 4: It's a privilege. Now, if you are not able to
- 18:31Speaker 4: maintain control of your vehicle, you should not be driving.
- 18:39Speaker 4: I'm a senior citizen.
- 18:40Speaker 7: I am all for annual... Well, that may be true.
- 18:42Speaker 4: That may be true, but you know as well as
- 18:44Speaker 4: I do there's no court in the land. I don't
- 18:47Speaker 4: give a damn about a court.
- 18:49Speaker 7: I'm talking about killing people. If you're not qualified to drive,
- 18:53Speaker 7: you should not be driving. Your license should be removed
- 18:56Speaker 7: from you.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Well, I'm sorry... And take an annual.
- 18:59Speaker 7: take an annual test, and if you.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Can drive, drive.
- 19:02Speaker 5: I didn't mean to kill her.
- 19:03Speaker 4: You're acting like I meant to kill her. I didn't
- 19:05Speaker 4: mean to do it.
- 19:06Speaker 7: I don't care if you meant to kill her or not.
- 19:07Speaker 7: You killed her.
- 19:08Speaker 4: It was an understandable mistake. It was not an understandable mistake.
- 19:12Speaker 7: How do you call it an understandable mistake?
- 19:14Speaker 2: She was running a red light.
- 19:16Speaker 6: She was crossing in the green light.
- 19:18Speaker 4: It was yellow, and then it turned red. You said
- 19:22Speaker 4: that she caught... Okay. Have you ever tried... Have you
- 19:27Speaker 4: tried to stop an RV when you're doing 50?
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yes, I have.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Okay, you can't do it... But I didn't try to
- 19:33Speaker 4: run a red light.
- 19:33Speaker 7: I realized I was driving a vehicle that did not
- 19:36Speaker 7: stop as fast as a normal automobile did.
- 19:38Speaker 4: As a fellow veteran, how many kids have you backed...
- 19:41Speaker 4: As a fellow veteran, be honest with me, all right?
- 19:44Speaker 7: I'll be honest.
- 19:44Speaker 4: How many kids have you backed your Buick over? Yeah.
- 19:47Speaker 4: I haven't backed them over anybody. You don't want to
- 19:49Speaker 4: answer that question. honestly. Oh, come on.
- 19:51Speaker 2: I've never killed anybody with my automobile.
- 19:52Speaker 4: 1-800-449-8686.
- 19:53Speaker 3: 1-800-449-8686.
- 19:53Speaker 7: Phil Henry Show.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Phil henry show 1-800-449-8686 but you never you didn't tell
- 20:35Speaker 3: me there was another boy that you that you hit it's.
- 20:38Speaker 4: In the mr henry national association of retired voters do
- 20:42Speaker 4: not hide anything we have well hold.
- 20:46Speaker 3: On lloyd bona fide is with us he's the president
- 20:48Speaker 3: of the national association of retired voters we're talking about
- 20:50Speaker 3: senior citizens should they be tested should their skills be
- 20:53Speaker 3: tested as they get into advanced years. We had a
- 20:56Speaker 3: woman hit a bunch of school kids yesterday in Los Angeles.
- 21:00Speaker 3: You've heard of these stories yourselves, I'm sure, throughout the years.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Elderly people in cars losing control. You tell me, you
- 21:06Speaker 3: said that you hit and killed a woman and her baby,
- 21:09Speaker 3: now a little boy?
- 21:10Speaker 4: What I told you, please don't mischaracterize what I said, sir.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I don't think I did.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Please allow me to finish. What I told you was
- 21:19Speaker 4: I was in my car driving my wife to the doctor.
- 21:23Speaker 4: My wife has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I'm very sorry to hear that.
- 21:30Speaker 4: All right, then please allow me to explain. And this
- 21:34Speaker 4: kid darts out on his bicycle and tosses me a bone.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Now, when you say toss a bone, he flipped you off?
- 21:41Speaker 4: He flipped me the finger, yes. And I wanted to
- 21:44Speaker 4: talk to the boy, and he was caught under the wheels.
- 21:48Speaker 4: We had a sports car, and it is very low
- 21:50Speaker 4: to the ground. And I considered a lawsuit against the
- 21:54Speaker 4: manufacturer because it picked the child up, he hit the windshield,
- 21:58Speaker 4: and then I think the police said he bounced twice
- 22:00Speaker 4: off the roof of the car, hit the back of
- 22:04Speaker 4: my car, hit the street behind the car that was
- 22:07Speaker 4: hit again by a delivery van of some kind behind me.
- 22:13Speaker 4: It was a tragedy, but I did not kill that boy.
- 22:15Speaker 4: The van behind me killed him. And for you to say,
- 22:20Speaker 4: That I am intentionally targeting. My wife has been diagnosed
- 22:24Speaker 4: with ovarian cancer.
- 22:25Speaker 2: All right, sir.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I know you were taking your wife to the doctor.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I'm sorry to hear that. Your car was the first
- 22:31Speaker 3: car to hit that boy. You said it picked him
- 22:33Speaker 3: up and threw.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Him in the air.
- 22:34Speaker 4: They said he was alive when he hit the pavement
- 22:38Speaker 4: behind my car.
- 22:39Speaker 2: And then he was hit by a what?
- 22:41Speaker 4: Some kind of a delivery van. That's what killed him.
- 22:44Speaker 2: But it was initially your car that threw him up
- 22:47Speaker 2: in the air.
- 22:48Speaker 4: It is not my car that killed him, but my
- 22:50Speaker 4: wife had cancer, and he threw me a bone.
- 22:52Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to try to understand what you're saying.
- 22:57Speaker 2: It's okay for you to kill the kid. You didn't
- 22:59Speaker 2: kill him.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I did not kill him.
- 23:00Speaker 3: It's all right for you to chase some kid down
- 23:02Speaker 3: because he flipped you off because your wife has cancer.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Great.
- 23:07Speaker 4: God forbid it should happen to you, sir.
- 23:10Speaker 2: 1-800-449-8686.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Here is Joyce on the Phil Henry Show.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Joyce, go ahead.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Hi.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 23:17Speaker 6: I just want to say that I'm absolutely disgusted and
- 23:20Speaker 6: it's despicable about this man.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I'm a senior citizen myself. What did I do? It's
- 23:25Speaker 4: what the kids did. He tossed me a bone.
- 23:30Speaker 6: I can't believe that the law let you get away
- 23:32Speaker 6: with this. Senior citizens should be prosecuted when they kill anybody.
- 23:36Speaker 4: You know as well as I do.
- 23:37Speaker 6: And to say that the person was a mongoloid? My
- 23:40Speaker 6: son is handicapped, and if anybody hurt him, it's just despicable.
- 23:45Speaker 4: The kid had Down syndrome, and I'm just saying that, God,
- 23:49Speaker 4: my wife.
- 23:49Speaker 6: You're a joke.
- 23:51Speaker 4: You are a joke.
- 23:52Speaker 6: I can't believe that you're even saying.
- 23:54Speaker 5: This on the radio.
- 23:55Speaker 4: My wife is dying of ovarian cancer, so I think
- 23:58Speaker 4: I've got some other considerations.
- 24:00Speaker 6: I don't believe you took the life of a child
- 24:02Speaker 6: and a young woman.
- 24:03Speaker 4: I did not intentionally take their life. I was on
- 24:05Speaker 4: my way to the feature.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Then you should have stopped.
- 24:09Speaker 6: If there was an accident, you should have stopped.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I fought for my country. I don't care.
- 24:14Speaker 6: I fought for my uncles, and they were killed in
- 24:16Speaker 6: the war. And that doesn't give them the right to
- 24:18Speaker 6: kill anybody else.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Why were they killed?
- 24:22Speaker 2: They were in a war.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Well, I got through the war pretty good.
- 24:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know why, because you must be a
- 24:29Speaker 5: rotten person.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Only the good die young.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Ma'am, I was on my way to Santa Anita for
- 24:34Speaker 4: the feature race.
- 24:36Speaker 6: You're proud of that?
- 24:38Speaker 4: You are a despicable human being, and I'll tell you,
- 24:41Speaker 4: if you represent.
- 24:43Speaker 6: AARP, and I'm in that organization, I am in that organization.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 24:48Speaker 2: He doesn't represent AARP.
- 24:50Speaker 3: He represents a group called the National Association of Retired Motorists.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't hear too good, do you? Are you
- 24:58Speaker 4: a senior citizen?
- 24:59Speaker 6: That makes me feel a lot better.
- 25:00Speaker 5: Yes, I am a senior citizen.
- 25:01Speaker 4: And you're telling me that you think you'd do jail
- 25:04Speaker 4: time if you ran over a bungaloid kid.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Yes.
- 25:08Speaker 2: What?
- 25:09Speaker 6: I would deserve to.
- 25:10Speaker 5: If I ran over anybody.
- 25:12Speaker 4: I'm not saying we don't deserve to. It didn't stop.
- 25:14Speaker 4: But you know a judge isn't going to put senior
- 25:16Speaker 4: citizens in jail because... Why not? Because we look grandfatherly and... Baloney.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Yes.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Baloney.
- 25:23Speaker 5: You know what?
- 25:24Speaker 6: You make me sick.
- 25:25Speaker 4: I didn't see the girl before I hit her. I
- 25:27Speaker 4: felt a bump and I kept going. I didn't know.
- 25:30Speaker 6: Yeah, well, then you shouldn't have a driver's license.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Well, look at... Look at....
- 25:35Speaker 4: Lady, my wife is dying from... We got the.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Ovarian cancer, okay?
- 25:39Speaker 6: I'm very sorry to your wife to have to have
- 25:40Speaker 6: a husband like that.
- 25:41Speaker 4: I'm trying. We live on a fixed income. We don't
- 25:44Speaker 4: live down on the beach high on the hog like
- 25:46Speaker 4: a lot of you. So what? So I have to do.
- 25:49Speaker 6: So what, that gives you the right to kill somebody?
- 25:52Speaker 3: Look, Lloyd, you said that you hit her, but then
- 25:57Speaker 3: you made the decision to keep going.
- 25:58Speaker 4: It was a toss-up, yes.
- 26:00Speaker 6: You just told me you didn't know what you hit.
- 26:04Speaker 6: where are you know which is a story i was.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Pretty sure it was pretty sure it was a person
- 26:10Speaker 4: I don't believe it. But then I kept seeing that
- 26:12Speaker 4: horse going over the finish line.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Yeah, was this at night?
- 26:15Speaker 5: This is a joke.
- 26:16Speaker 4: It was the feature race at night.
- 26:17Speaker 5: We'll put everybody on.
- 26:18Speaker 4: I don't believe it. It was the feature race at
- 26:20Speaker 4: Santa Dita. You can check it out.
- 26:22Speaker 6: No judge would ever in his.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Right mind allow you to go just on probation. Oh, gobbledygook.
- 26:29Speaker 4: How many senior citizens have you seen go to jail
- 26:32Speaker 4: on account of they run someone over?
- 26:34Speaker 6: Well, I wish they all would. Ah, see?
- 26:36Speaker 4: You don't know anybody. You're disgusting. But when they found
- 26:39Speaker 4: that baby.
- 26:39Speaker 6: No, I don't know any senior citizens that committed such
- 26:43Speaker 6: a crime.
- 26:43Speaker 4: No, that's a lie. Everybody knows at least one senior
- 26:46Speaker 4: citizen that's driven a car through a Denny's... Nobody drove...
- 26:50Speaker 4: None of your friends have driven a car into a
- 26:52Speaker 4: department store. No. You're trying to... You know something?
- 26:55Speaker 6: Come on.
- 26:56Speaker 5: You're full of it.
- 26:57Speaker 4: You're full of it.
- 26:57Speaker 6: You're putting me on.
- 26:58Speaker 4: You're full of crap.
- 26:59Speaker 6: You're putting me on. You're full of crap.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Yeah, so are you.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Yeah, well.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Goodbye. The baby carriage stuck to the wiper blade on
- 27:06Speaker 4: the window, so I knew I'd hit something, but I
- 27:08Speaker 4: didn't know what.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Well, what do you think is in a baby carriage? I...
- 27:14Speaker 2: What do you think's in a baby carriage? A baby.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Here is Michelle on the Phil Henry Show.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Hello.
- 27:21Speaker 6: Hello.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Hello? Mr. Henry, you told.
- 27:26Speaker 2: We got a caller here, okay?
- 27:27Speaker 4: I'm sorry, yes.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Yes. I don't believe that you even belong walking on
- 27:32Speaker 5: the street, let alone driving.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Do you drive? Yes, I do. Uh-huh.
- 27:38Speaker 5: And I'm a very safe driver. And needless to say,
- 27:41Speaker 5: a lot of people... How old are you? How old
- 27:44Speaker 5: am I? I'm old enough to know that what you've
- 27:47Speaker 5: done is wrong and you should be in jail.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Well, guess what? I'm not. So you're going to blame
- 27:51Speaker 4: me for that? Yes, I do. How do you blame me?
- 27:54Speaker 4: I wasn't the one. Am I supposed to go up
- 27:56Speaker 4: to the judge and say, I insist you give me
- 27:58Speaker 4: prison time? I'm telling you that no judge gives... And
- 28:02Speaker 4: I would say, Michelle, if I were you, instead of
- 28:05Speaker 4: criticizing me, if you're a senior citizen, I'd go out
- 28:08Speaker 4: and have a little bit of fun maybe for the
- 28:10Speaker 4: first time in your life. And I'll tell you what.
- 28:12Speaker 4: You know what? That's your problem. You've got a cobweb,
- 28:15Speaker 4: so why don't you go out and have a couple
- 28:18Speaker 4: of laughs? What, like you? Yeah, like me. And the
- 28:21Speaker 4: child and the mother? And let me tell you what.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Nobody's going to put you in jail for it.
- 28:25Speaker 2: What is with you, man? Now you're recommending it?
- 28:28Speaker 4: I recommend it for every senior citizen. You'll feel like
- 28:31Speaker 4: you have. I'll tell you what.
- 28:32Speaker 5: If it's my child you hit and my grandchild, whether
- 28:35Speaker 5: it was handicapped or not.
- 28:37Speaker 2: You wouldn't go to jail or be walking.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Because you'd be dead. So you're a vigilante, are you?
- 28:43Speaker 4: You would be dead. So you're a vigilante, are you? Oh,
- 28:46Speaker 4: you bet.
- 28:46Speaker 5: You'd hire my children?
- 28:48Speaker 4: Oh, so you'd break the law in order for... Because
- 28:51Speaker 4: on account of... I broke the law. You make me sick. Ma'am,
- 28:55Speaker 4: you think... You'll think the way I do when you
- 28:57Speaker 4: kill your first kid and you want to show your
- 28:59Speaker 4: grandkids how to do it, because it's the most.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, a lot of fun.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Well, it is.
- 29:05Speaker 4: And another thing. That cremation special is still on.
