- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21OK, Alex and I are currently at a conference at like AB to C
- 0:26marketing conference for Clavio, which is like AB to CCRM
- 0:30marketing software for like e-commerce brands.
- 0:33Mostly it's here in Sydney. Like I'm in the studio right
- 0:36now. I'm recording in the studio, but
- 0:37I didn't realize what day it was when we booked this conference.
- 0:41So we like to what are these types of conferences?
- 0:43Sometimes we're invited, but other times we just decide to go
- 0:47because it's super valuable to us.
- 0:49Like our customers are marketing managers, primarily B to C
- 0:52marketing managers. So it's super important for us
- 0:54to be understanding like what they care about what new
- 0:57innovations are happening in their world.
- 0:59It's also important for us when we're kind of building out our
- 1:01campaigns to understand like, what are the new things
- 1:04happening in this world, you know, and at the end of the day,
- 1:08advertising, content, that's all part of marketing.
- 1:11That's all part of the marketing funnel.
- 1:12So like we have to look at ourselves as kind of like
- 1:14marketers as well. So that's why we're there.
- 1:17But I didn't realize when we booked this that it would be the
- 1:19Met Gala at the same time. So all morning we're like in the
- 1:23opening sessions and I'm like looking at my phone.
- 1:25I mean, like, Oh my God, I cannot believe getting all the
- 1:27looks coming in. And I was like, I need to go
- 1:29record mini. So the red carpet hasn't even
- 1:32finished. But you guys know, I'm not like
- 1:34a super fashion girlie. So I'm just going to share so
- 1:36far my favorite looks. That's usually how I recap the
- 1:39Met Gala and there are a couple offshoot stories related to like
- 1:42Internet culture from the Met Gala that I'll talk about.
- 1:45And then I do have other stories too.
- 1:47This is going to be a big episode, I fear, so let's just
- 1:49get into it. OK, so the first story that I
- 1:51have for you guys is obviously the Met Gala.
- 1:53It is happening right now. OK so the theme is super fine
- 1:57tailoring, black style and is obviously tied to the upcoming
- 2:01exhibit at the Met with the same name.
- 2:04The Met shared that the exhibit will quote, feature garments,
- 2:07paintings, photographs and more all exploring the indelible
- 2:12style of black men in the context of dandyism from the
- 2:1518th century through present day.
- 2:17The Co chairs are Coleman, Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP
- 2:21Rocky, Pharrell Williams and the honorary Co chair is LeBron
- 2:25James. OK, some of my favorite looks,
- 2:27and honestly, I don't have solid reasons behind a lot of these.
- 2:32This is just like from an aesthetic perspective.
- 2:34Like I thought it was a vibe. OK.
- 2:36Tiana Taylor, Zendaya, Emma Chamberlain, Dochi, Sabrina
- 2:40Carpenter, Hunter Schaefer, Cobby Lame, Charli XCX, Alton
- 2:46Mason and Gigi Hadid. Oh, I also really liked Demi
- 2:48Moore. I liked she, I think she was
- 2:50dressed as like a pinstripe. That was kind of cool.
- 2:53But yeah, I also just saw that Kim Kardashian just arrived and
- 2:56she is in like full leather. No, like I think an all leather
- 3:02look can be OK. Me being like, I'm not a fashion
- 3:04girlie but here I am. I think an all leather look like
- 3:09can be cool. I think it can be really edgy.
- 3:11I think it can be done really well.
- 3:12But this looks like something that I could buy right now on
- 3:17like Princess Polly. Like for real.
- 3:19OK but 2 stories off the back of the met so far 03 Rihanna is
- 3:24pregnant I she hasn't walked the red carpet since I've been
- 3:27recording but she did show up with a baby bump and then A$AP
- 3:30Rocky was asked about it on the red carpet and he did confirm
- 3:33that her outfit that she's going to wear to the met will show her
- 3:36baby bump so she is pregnant with her third child.
- 3:38The second offshoot story is that Sydney Sweeney arrived and
- 3:42she was one of the first to walk the red carpet and the cut
- 3:45posted photos of her and their caption said a very spray tanned
- 3:49Sydney Sweeney leaving the for the Met Gala.
- 3:52The whole comment section was just filled with people being
- 3:55like, what the fuck is this caption?
- 3:57This is so shady. Like what are you trying to do
- 4:00here? And anyways, they actually
- 4:02changed the caption because everyone was like, what the
- 4:05hell? So that was just like a little
- 4:06bit of tea that I noticed. And then the third story off the
- 4:10back of this, So Zendaya, her outfit, she's wearing this all
- 4:12white outfit and she has this big white hat.
- 4:15OK. And now TikTok and Twitter and
- 4:19Reddit are filled with the Zendaya hat theory.
- 4:23So the Zendaya hat theory is basically after she wore, you
- 4:26know, that like iconic look where she's wearing that really
- 4:29tall hat. Like it's not even like a top
- 4:31hat. I don't know what kind of hat
- 4:32it's called. She's wearing that big like
- 4:34clown like looking hat. It's like a big Black Hat.
- 4:36And when she wore that, everybody kind of like, you
- 4:39know, made fun of her. It was like this whole thing,
- 4:41She stood by it. She's like, I liked that outfit.
- 4:43I would wear it again. So she wore that big Black Hat.
- 4:46The theory is that her whole life changed after she wore that
- 4:49hat. And the Internet is convinced
- 4:51that Tom Holland was hiding in that hat.
- 4:54You just have to accept, like, I know that obviously makes no
- 4:57sense, but you just have to be like, OK, yes, I'm accepting the
- 5:00figurative, like brain rot. So now because she's wearing
- 5:04this big white hat, the theory is taking off again.
- 5:07And people are like, OK, something big is coming for
- 5:10Zendaya because after she wore that Black Hat, Tom Holland
- 5:13popped into her life and her whole life changed.
- 5:16So what's next for Zendaya then? And now TikTok is filled with
- 5:20Zendaya hat fan edits on the Zendaya hat theory.
- 5:24It's so funny. You just look it up.
- 5:25It's really, really funny. So yeah, that is an unhinged
- 5:30Internet meme joke moment that has already spun off from the
- 5:35Met Gala. And we're only like, I don't
- 5:36know, two hours into the red carpet.
- 5:38OK, the next word that I have for you guys is there is a fire
- 5:42Festival of Book Talk that happened over the weekend.
- 5:45So A Million Lives Festival is the latest fan festival to get
- 5:49called a scam. A Million Lives Festival was
- 5:51meant to celebrate the romanticy genre.
- 5:53So I guess romance and fantasy, which is a super popular genre
- 5:57on book talk. And it was held in Baltimore
- 5:59this weekend. The event was Co organized and
- 6:02thrown by an author and a company that specializes in like
- 6:06social media for authors in the book space.
- 6:09And tickets ranged from $50.00 to $250 for fantasy authors to
- 6:14attend and basically like get some publicity for their books.
- 6:16I guess it was kind of like a fair.
- 6:18So many authors took to TikTok saying that the event had very
- 6:21few attendees despite being promised 500 to 1000 attendees.
- 6:25And they lost money on the tickets, like they didn't make
- 6:27it back. One of the authors also said
- 6:29that the event event promised her hotel would be comped and
- 6:32then last minute she was told by the events company that they'd
- 6:35have to pay their own bill. This is from The Cut quote.
- 6:38In a series of TikTok videos, author Percy J described the
- 6:41event as absolute chaos and said there was no signage advertising
- 6:45where it was located. Amenities that were advertised
- 6:48on the event website like a content creation room were
- 6:50apparently nowhere. Insight The room where the quote
- 6:53UN quote ball was held appeared to have been sparsely decorated
- 6:57with quote, nary A streamer or a banner or even a DJ.
- 7:00Insight One viral video posted by author Stephanie Combs showed
- 7:04several women in lavish gowns excitedly skipping to the ball
- 7:07only to cut to a room of people milling about in a dismal
- 7:10looking conference room. People are saying this is like
- 7:12Willy Wonka Festival Part 2. But at least at the Willy Wonka
- 7:15Festival, even though it was such a flop, they at least had
- 7:19people like dressed up and they like tried to decorate, right?
- 7:22Like this was just like empty. I don't even know.
- 7:25So a million lives has responded in a TikTok comment saying that
- 7:30they will refund everyone. Quote.
- 7:32I do understand that the ball tonight was not up to standards.
- 7:34There were a lot of issues getting set up and it was not
- 7:37set up well. You know, I think planning
- 7:39events like this is really hard. I think it's absolutely a skill.
- 7:43Like there's a reason why event companies exist, you know, and
- 7:46like why event planners are like lucrative careers.
- 7:49And I think it's a, it's absolutely a skill.
- 7:52It is so time consuming. There's so much to think about.
- 7:55There's so many moving parts. Like I absolutely, I cannot do
- 7:58events like that is just not for me.
- 8:00I don't understand, though, when we get situations like this, why
- 8:03people don't just like refund ahead of time.
- 8:06Like if you are putting something together and you're
- 8:08realizing it's not going to go the way that you have advertised
- 8:10it, like just cancel it and refund everybody.
- 8:13Oh my God. Speaking of, have you guys seen
- 8:16that like Canadian wedding makeup artist drama going on?
- 8:20It's very niche. So I didn't include it because
- 8:22it's about like a makeup artist on PEI island.
- 8:25Well, PEI is an island. I is for island anyways,
- 8:28whatever Prince Edward Island and she so there's this bride
- 8:33who's been posting like screenshots of their
- 8:35interactions, like their messages and stuff because and
- 8:37she's going like semi viral on like Canadian TikTok because she
- 8:42hired this makeup artist for her wedding and then her makeup
- 8:46artist messaged her being and she paid a deposit and then her
- 8:48makeup artist messaged her and was like, Hey, I'm not going to
- 8:50be able to do your wedding anymore because my brother's
- 8:53actually surprised us all and he's having like a surprise
- 8:56wedding the same weekend. So I like I won't be able to do
- 8:59your wedding. And then the bride's like no
- 9:01worries. And then the makeup artist is
- 9:02like, but I'm going to keep your deposit because it was like a
- 9:05non refundable deposit. And the bride's like, I don't
- 9:08think that's how deposits work. Like I think I get it back if
- 9:11you cancel on me, like I didn't cancel on you.
- 9:14And she's arguing with her saying that's what all wedding
- 9:17vendors do. They would all keep your deposit
- 9:19and the bride's like, you cancelled on me, give me my
- 9:22deposit pack. Her video started going kind of
- 9:24viral. They were just like fighting.
- 9:26She's like, I don't know what to do.
- 9:27She did name and shame the makeup artist.
- 9:30Like in the comments, people were like, tag her.
- 9:32So she did. And the makeup artist obviously
- 9:34has been getting so much hate. So she's had to like go on
- 9:36private and stuff stuff. And then she sent her all these
- 9:38messages being like, I'm not going to engage with you
- 9:40anymore. Like, you know, basically
- 9:42everybody's flooding me with hate.
- 9:43Now. She did refund her deposit after
- 9:48taking it to TikTok, but she was like, this is not me admitting
- 9:51that I did anything wrong. Like she was like doubling down.
- 9:53She was like, no, like I'm in every right to keep your
- 9:57deposit. That's like the high level
- 9:59recap. I was like, I'm not going to
- 10:00include it. And then I just told you the
- 10:01whole story. So anyways, OK and the last word
- 10:04that I have for you guys is that Hawk to a girl is in Vanity
- 10:08Fair. This is such a huge PR play
- 10:13after that crypto scam Vanity Fair.
- 10:16Look, I understand mainstream publishing is taking influencers
- 10:19and creators so seriously now because, like, they are the
- 10:21culture makers and they finally figured that out.
- 10:24And, you know, TikTok really just had to, like, shake things
- 10:27up, I think, for the industry to change.
- 10:29So I'm not surprised, honestly, that Vanity Fair has done this
- 10:32like, full profile with somebody like hawk to a girl.
- 10:35But yeah, this is wild. So in the interview, Haley,
- 10:39which is her real name, talks about how she stepped away from
- 10:42the spotlight post crypto scam to rebuild.
- 10:45So this was her answer on like, crypto in general.
- 10:49She said, yeah, I don't really understand it much myself.
- 10:53I don't know. It was one of those things that
- 10:54just happened, and I feel sorry for everybody that just lost
- 10:57money. I don't know.
- 10:58I've learned from that. You got to be really careful
- 11:00what you tie your name to, and you definitely need to know what
- 11:03you're getting yourself into when you agree to do it.
- 11:05That's something I definitely should have done beforehand.
- 11:08I don't know. It's a crazy world we live,
- 11:11girl. Some people lost their life
- 11:13savings. Like, OK, if you put your life
- 11:16savings into hawk to a coin or whatever, like that was probably
- 11:23not the smartest move, but for her to not even have a polished
- 11:27answer as to like what happened here is wild to me.
- 11:32Like they did a full profile. They did like a full feature
- 11:34interview with her. Like they did a full photo shoot
- 11:36with her. She had like full glam.
- 11:38Like she just it, it was like a photo shoot.
- 11:40Like this was like a profile interview and she doesn't even
- 11:43have a better answer than like I don't even really understand it
- 11:45myself. Like, I wish I had known better
- 11:48type of thing. I mean, I guess that's honest.
- 11:50And then when she was asked what she's learned from it, she said,
- 11:52I would say personally, what I learned from it, Let's see.
- 11:55I don't know. I just feel really bad for
- 11:57anybody that lost money. All my comments, if you read
- 12:00those people are like, Oh well, I lost a lot of money in this.
- 12:02Now my kids have to go without stuff.
- 12:04I don't know. It makes me feel like really
- 12:06sorry for it. What I learned from it.
- 12:08Let's see. I don't know, girl, Oh my God, I
- 12:15don't think Haley has anyone more solid around her than when
- 12:19she did this whole crypto situation.
- 12:22And like she doesn't necessarily need anyone around her.
- 12:25Like, you know what I mean? Like she's not like she is very
- 12:28well known, but she's not like an influencer in the same way I
- 12:31would say. Like I don't think that she is
- 12:32like, well, you know what, actually, she did influence a
- 12:35lot of people to buy into her coin.
- 12:37I would say she's more of like male influencer.
- 12:41I don't think young women are necessarily following Haley.
- 12:44I actually do think it is a lot of guys.
- 12:46She kind of like inserted herself in the manosphere quite
- 12:49early and that's is kind of why like that crypto coin situation,
- 12:53like it did kind of align with her brand weirdly, but like it
- 12:57was obviously the worst idea ever.
- 12:58She's not somebody who like necessarily needs a team around
- 13:02her. Like she's not at that scale.
- 13:04But if she's going to do a Vanity Fair interview, a profile
- 13:07like this right after, she has just absolutely shit the bed
- 13:11with this crypto stuff and she's trying to make a comeback,
- 13:13obviously. How did she not hire even like a
- 13:16freelance publicist or like, I don't know, like, do like a
- 13:20minute of media training? I can't believe she had nothing
- 13:23prepared for these answers. Or just like, write some notes
- 13:26yourself. Just know what you want to get
- 13:28across. I can't believe that no matter
- 13:30how you feel about Haley though, she literally took one single
- 13:34viral moment and she spun it into something.
- 13:37It's not like a Brittany Broski situation, you know, but it is
- 13:42pretty impressive that she was able.
- 13:43It's because she took herself so seriously.
- 13:45That's actually what it was. It's because she had this moment
- 13:48that became like a meme, like the Hawk 2A situation.
- 13:50She didn't even have any social media when that happened, so
- 13:53nobody could like follow her. So then a couple weeks later
- 13:55after that went viral, she launched her own channels and
- 13:58she came out with like this weird documentary.
- 14:00Do you guys remember that on TikTok where she was like, I was
- 14:03born and raised in like whatever.
- 14:05And it was like following her around her hometown, showing her
- 14:07grandma. And it was like documentary
- 14:10style. It was so serious and everybody
- 14:12was like, what the hell is this? It's almost like she was so
- 14:16untouched that she didn't even know what a meme was.
- 14:18So she couldn't like lean into the joke of the meme.
- 14:21She just immediately took all of that attention as like very
- 14:23serious. But honestly, it worked, so I
- 14:27guess good for her. Anyways guys, that's it for Mini
- 14:30Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:32I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 14:34and subscribe. We're trying to get to 10,000.
- 14:37I keep wanting to say Spotify star ratings, 10,000 subscribers
- 14:40on YouTube and 1000 Spotify star ratings.
- 14:44I love you guys and Annabelle will talk to you tomorrow and
- 14:46then I will talk to you on Thursday.
- 14:47Bye.
