- 1:07Speaker 3: I'm Del Cooper. Happy Monday morning to you.
- 1:10Speaker 4: It is a pretty nice Monday morning out there, and
- 1:12Speaker 4: it's a pretty nice start of the week to you.
- 1:14Speaker 4: If you like temperatures somewhere in the sixties and eventually

- 1:28Speaker 4: Oh I love technology. John Bredett from Fourth Avenue Financial
- 1:31Speaker 4: is on the phone with us this morning. John, Good morning.
- 1:33Speaker 4: How you doing this morning.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I'm doing great. It sounds like I should have should
- 1:37Speaker 5: have stayed back there. It's it's kind of raining here now.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Oh oh, well, for once we get we get a
- 1:43Speaker 4: leg up on the weather up here. It's it's a
- 1:46Speaker 4: gorgeous It's going to be a gorgeous day to day.
- 1:48Speaker 4: And I think it's sunny and warm through Wednesday and
- 1:51Speaker 4: maybe a little bit of cloud cover on Thursday, but
- 1:52Speaker 4: it's still pretty warm. So yeah, I'll take it. I'll
- 1:54Speaker 4: tell you what. That's not so bad.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Yeah, there you go, there you go. You never know.
- 2:00Speaker 3: John Bredett for Fourth.
- 2:01Speaker 5: I've been the first time i've been down here since,
- 2:03Speaker 5: uh since the hurricane.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So oh is that right?
- 2:07Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, my wife came down once. Uh but uh
- 2:10Speaker 5: but I didn't, I didn't come with her. And uh yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 5: so the uh there's still quite a bit of uh
- 2:18Speaker 5: of damage. If you're a landscaper, you need to come
- 2:21Speaker 5: down here because uh there's still all the landscaping around
- 2:25Speaker 5: the island. Is you know, it's just been stripped bare.
- 2:31Speaker 3: That's that's crazy when you see that stuff.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 2:36Speaker 4: That's John Bredett from Fourth Avenue Financial. More information online

- 2:46Speaker 4: or so dollars to donuts over Avengage and Bidnes of
- 2:48Speaker 4: South Charleston, which is kind of an informal meeting of
- 2:50Speaker 4: folks discussing things that can help you retire, uh, tackling
- 2:53Speaker 4: things in the in the retirement zeitgeist. I guess if
- 2:56Speaker 4: there's such a thing when it comes to financial planning
- 2:58Speaker 4: and so forth. John Bredad is with his every Monday
- 3:00Speaker 4: morning at this time on retire Right Radio. We talk
- 3:02Speaker 4: about some of the best practices that you can do
- 3:05Speaker 4: to arm yourself on how you can retire right. And
- 3:07Speaker 4: the thing is, with the changing landscapes, the tools that
- 3:09Speaker 4: you need to use out of that toolbox they change
- 3:12Speaker 4: up a little bit. There might be some rusted tools
- 3:14Speaker 4: on the bottom of the box that you need to
- 3:15Speaker 4: pry out and oil up a little bit and get going.
- 3:18Speaker 4: And there's other ones that are well worn that you've
- 3:20Speaker 4: been using pretty regularly over the last few years that
- 3:23Speaker 4: maybe you need to set up on the shelf for
- 3:24Speaker 4: a little while. Those are the types of things that
- 3:26Speaker 4: we're going to talk about this morning on how you
- 3:27Speaker 4: can most make yourself solvent for your future and to retirement.
- 3:31Speaker 4: John Berdett with Fourth Avenue Financial Fourth Avenue Financial dot
- 3:34Speaker 4: com located here in downtown Charleston. We always start off
- 3:36Speaker 4: the show talking about the previous week leading up to
- 3:39Speaker 4: in market fluxes and things like that, and frankly, if
- 3:43Speaker 4: you've been listening to this show for the last several
- 3:44Speaker 4: weeks anyway, it was kind of more the same, a
- 3:47Speaker 4: lot of a lot of things and a bit of flux.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of red numbers. So we were down
- 3:54Speaker 5: pretty pretty pretty good across the board. Last week, with
- 4:01Speaker 5: the exception of European stocks, it's almost like everything that
- 4:05Speaker 5: happened last year has has turned on its head. So
- 4:09Speaker 5: you have the tech stocks have done the worst. They're
- 4:13Speaker 5: down five point in the Natsax down five point eight
- 4:15Speaker 5: percent year today, the SMP is down one point nine
- 4:19Speaker 5: year today. The Dow is actually up point six so
- 4:24Speaker 5: you're more industrials, financials things like that are are up
- 4:29Speaker 5: a little bit this year. And then the International, which
- 4:33Speaker 5: has lagged for years, year to date is up ten
- 4:37Speaker 5: point nine percent. So it is amazing how well the
- 4:42Speaker 5: international has performed relatively to the US, you know this year. Now,
- 4:49Speaker 5: well that continue, I don't know, but right now it
- 4:51Speaker 5: certainly has has the wind in the sails, so to speak.
- 4:58Speaker 4: There's a lot of things that you know, if you're
- 4:59Speaker 4: if you or even just a casual you know, we
- 5:02Speaker 4: sometimes talk on this show about how, you know, you
- 5:04Speaker 4: shouldn't get too much into the headlines and things like that,
- 5:06Speaker 4: But the fact of the matter is, if you're just
- 5:07Speaker 4: a casual observer of the news, a casual consumer of
- 5:11Speaker 4: the news, you can't help but to let some of
- 5:13Speaker 4: that stuff kind of penetrate through. And if you follow
- 5:15Speaker 4: any of these types of news at all. You know
- 5:17Speaker 4: about some of the volatility that's in the market. Job growth,
- 5:21Speaker 4: I think has was a little less than what was expected.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Some of the growth indicators for GDP are coming in
- 5:27Speaker 4: relatively negative. I mean, you can't help but to hear
- 5:29Speaker 4: the some of this stuff.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, certainly, corporate earnings are still growing, but
- 5:38Speaker 5: the expectations of growth as we get through the year
- 5:42Speaker 5: keep coming down. So it's still, you know, a positive year,
- 5:46Speaker 5: but not quite as positive. It doesn't look like it's
- 5:50Speaker 5: going to be as positive as one was hoping at
- 5:53Speaker 5: the beginning of the year, so that's been an adjustment
- 5:56Speaker 5: that's being made. You know, the economy, though, is slowing
- 6:01Speaker 5: down from a pretty firm place, so you know, that
- 6:05Speaker 5: doesn't necessarily mean there's a recession coming this year, but
- 6:09Speaker 5: certainly the expectations have been lowered, and you know, sometimes
- 6:15Speaker 5: that's what sets up the next rise in the market,
- 6:18Speaker 5: the fact that the bar is set lower, and if
- 6:20Speaker 5: you leap over that bar eventually, then that creates the
- 6:25Speaker 5: next rally. And that's why you have to look at
- 6:28Speaker 5: these things with a long term view. The market right now,
- 6:34Speaker 5: like you say, it's it's down a few percent for
- 6:36Speaker 5: the year. Overall, that's not you know, a disaster. The
- 6:41Speaker 5: market has a what's called a correction, a ten percent
- 6:44Speaker 5: fall from it from its high at least once a
- 6:49Speaker 5: year on average, sometimes more than that, but on average
- 6:52Speaker 5: at least once a year. We have a pullback like
- 6:55Speaker 5: that in just about any given year, and so it's
- 6:59Speaker 5: not a new usual. It's just really a part of
- 7:02Speaker 5: a part of the market, and history shows that anytime
- 7:05Speaker 5: we've had those. If you are patient, if you use
- 7:12Speaker 5: that to your advantage. You know, if you're on the
- 7:15Speaker 5: sidelines and have missed out on the rally we've had
- 7:17Speaker 5: in the last couple of years, and we get a pullback,
- 7:20Speaker 5: that could be a good time for you to get
- 7:22Speaker 5: started and get into the market, get off the sidelines
- 7:26Speaker 5: because over time, as companies develop their earning streams and
- 7:32Speaker 5: grow their businesses, you know you're going to grow along
- 7:34Speaker 5: with that if you're a part owner of that company.
- 7:37Speaker 5: So put that money to work and these can be
- 7:39Speaker 5: great opportunities when we get these pullbacks.
- 7:42Speaker 4: It's great information. With John Burdett from Fourth Avenue Financial,
- 7:45Speaker 4: if you have any questions for this morning for us
- 7:47Speaker 4: this morning, you're welcome to call in three zero four,
- 7:49Speaker 4: three four two eight one three one. You can also
- 7:51Speaker 4: send over a text message if you'd like three zero
- 7:52Speaker 4: four non three five five zero zero eight threes are
- 7:55Speaker 4: four nine three five five zero zero eight. Any question
- 7:57Speaker 4: you have about your retirement future, how you can retire right.
- 8:01Speaker 4: It's not a question of the moment in time that
- 8:03Speaker 4: you're at now. It's where the moment and time is
- 8:04Speaker 4: going to be when you retire, and there's a big
- 8:07Speaker 4: complicated road to get there, and John can help you
- 8:09Speaker 4: navigate that that path to get to retirement right. If
- 8:12Speaker 4: you want to give us a call this morning, three
- 8:13Speaker 4: zero four, three four two eight one three to one,
- 8:15Speaker 4: or you can text three zero four non three five
- 8:17Speaker 4: five zero zero eight one. Other question that I had,
- 8:20Speaker 4: just as far as folks that that are just interested
- 8:24Speaker 4: on what some of the things that they hear. One
- 8:26Speaker 4: of the other things that I was reading about a
- 8:28Speaker 4: little bit over this past weekend when it comes to
- 8:30Speaker 4: just globally as far as the economy goes, is I
- 8:32Speaker 4: guess that China is really struggling right now. They may
- 8:35Speaker 4: be entering into a deflationary period. Not that that you
- 8:39Speaker 4: know here on our shores that we're sad about China necessarily,
- 8:43Speaker 4: but that does affect the global economy to some degree.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Are when a country turns into that direction, is that
- 8:50Speaker 4: something you need to be aware of when it comes
- 8:51Speaker 4: to when you are stalking or diversification and different things
- 8:54Speaker 4: along those lines.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Well, it can be. I mean, you know, essentially that
- 9:01Speaker 5: scenario played out with Japan in the late eighties. You know,
- 9:07Speaker 5: they grew, grew, grew, and they overinvested in into production
- 9:12Speaker 5: and ended up getting into that that spiral where where
- 9:18Speaker 5: they were deflating. You know, their capacity was was greater
- 9:23Speaker 5: than the demand. And so that's that's basically what happens.
- 9:29Speaker 5: And then once that takes hold, it really slows the
- 9:34Speaker 5: entire economy down because you know, most of the economy
- 9:38Speaker 5: well you know, you think of a bank. When a
- 9:41Speaker 5: bank loans money out on a home, there's a reasonable
- 9:44Speaker 5: expectation that because of inflation, that loan is going to
- 9:51Speaker 5: be easier to pay back over time because of the dollar,
- 9:54Speaker 5: you know, deflating, And if the opposite is happening, then
- 10:00Speaker 5: those assets are are are not as valuable and it
- 10:04Speaker 5: makes the lending more shaky, which tightens them tightens up
- 10:09Speaker 5: the the flow of capital and the loan creation, and
- 10:14Speaker 5: and that's why when those when people talk of a
- 10:17Speaker 5: deflationary period, those can be much more damaging to an
- 10:22Speaker 5: economy than than inflation, which we've experienced recently. So it's
- 10:28Speaker 5: something to watch for. And and certainly China is a
- 10:31Speaker 5: big player now in the in the global economy. But
- 10:34Speaker 5: but as far as UH it goes, you know, for
- 10:37Speaker 5: for us in the United States, you know, it could
- 10:42Speaker 5: mean cheaper goods for US if if if you know,
- 10:45Speaker 5: they have over capacity like they do, and and you
- 10:50Speaker 5: know it, you know, actually could benefit in in the
- 10:54Speaker 5: in the form of lower prices for US.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Potentially interesting stuff is always a GENM debt from fourth
- 11:00Speaker 4: I HAVINGU and financial you could get on the conversation
- 11:02Speaker 4: three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight
- 11:04Speaker 4: if you want a text in question or three zero
- 11:06Speaker 4: four three four two eight one to three one. I
- 11:08Speaker 4: was among all this news, and I was trying to
- 11:10Speaker 4: apply that to things that we've talked about here in
- 11:12Speaker 4: the past, and how maybe that has changed the calculations
- 11:15Speaker 4: and some people's brains over the last you know, four years,
- 11:19Speaker 4: eight years.
- 11:19Speaker 3: So on and so forth.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And one of the things that we've talked about before is,
- 11:23Speaker 4: for example, people first come to you, You do a
- 11:26Speaker 4: risk assessment for them, trying to figure out what their
- 11:28Speaker 4: their tolerance level is for risk. Somebody with the tolerance
- 11:32Speaker 4: level of risk under a certain construction of market might
- 11:35Speaker 4: actually find that they have a different tolerance level under
- 11:38Speaker 4: this current construction of the market. So it may not
- 11:40Speaker 4: be a bad idea to talk to your advisor or
- 11:42Speaker 4: to find one if you don't have one, and maybe
- 11:44Speaker 4: determine what your real comfort with risk level is, because
- 11:46Speaker 4: you might need to do some reallocation just based off that.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Well, have no doubt about it, and a lot of
- 11:52Speaker 5: people when times are good in certain areas, for instance,
- 11:56Speaker 5: the tech stocks, like they've been for so long a
- 12:00Speaker 5: herd mentality, so everybody herds into that one type of
- 12:03Speaker 5: asset class, in this case of growth stocks technology stocks,
- 12:09Speaker 5: so everybody's piled in and they're no longer diversified properly.
- 12:13Speaker 5: And then you get a year like we've had now,
- 12:16Speaker 5: or at least the last several months, where all of
- 12:19Speaker 5: that's been turned upside down. Now you have the tech
- 12:22Speaker 5: stocks are by far and away the least performing asset class,
- 12:28Speaker 5: and then you have those industrials and so called boring
- 12:32Speaker 5: stocks are are outperforming and international, which we're left for dead,
- 12:39Speaker 5: are are running away with things. So if you didn't
- 12:43Speaker 5: keep your diversification, you know, eventually, eventually the pendulum swings.
- 12:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:52Speaker 5: The trick is, if you knew when the pendulum was
- 12:54Speaker 5: going to swing, you could try to time the market.
- 12:58Speaker 5: But nobody has a crystal ball. Nobody knows when the
- 13:01Speaker 5: pendulum exactly is going to swing. And so rather than
- 13:05Speaker 5: risk blowing up your portfolio by trying to guess that,
- 13:09Speaker 5: what you need to do is stay broadly diversified and
- 13:13Speaker 5: keep keep all of those allocations between those asset classes,
- 13:17Speaker 5: between those you know, international and domestic large cap, small gap,
- 13:23Speaker 5: keep all of those within balance to your risk tolerance
- 13:27Speaker 5: throughout it all. Yes, you may be giving up some
- 13:30Speaker 5: upside potential when you do that, but you're certainly taking
- 13:33Speaker 5: away a lot of the downside as well, And as
- 13:37Speaker 5: you get closer to retirement, that's much more important than
- 13:40Speaker 5: your return. You know, you cannot draw money out of
- 13:43Speaker 5: an account consistently if the account is swinging widely and
- 13:49Speaker 5: is volatile it is. It is not a recipe that's
- 13:52Speaker 5: gonna gonna have the outcome that you want.
- 13:57Speaker 4: It's John Adet with fourth Avenue financial and it might
- 14:00Speaker 4: just be a good idea in those cases, you know.
- 14:02Speaker 4: And we've talked about this before psychology with the investor,
- 14:05Speaker 4: just like with the consumer in general, it changes from
- 14:08Speaker 4: time to time. And if this is something where you
- 14:09Speaker 4: find yourself, maybe you do find yourself peeking at the
- 14:12Speaker 4: headlines a little too much or getting a little too anxious.
- 14:14Speaker 4: I mean, I've literally heard people talking about and more
- 14:17Speaker 4: than just an off, off the cuff comment, you know,
- 14:20Speaker 4: usually around the change of administrations or whenever there's news
- 14:23Speaker 4: or something like that, people are like, oh, well, what's
- 14:24Speaker 4: your four oh one k? And it's meant, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 4: somewhat jokingly, but not jokingly, you know, not completely serious.
- 14:29Speaker 4: That's been completely inverted now, you know, people are are
- 14:32Speaker 4: like deadly serious. And when they're when they're like, man,
- 14:34Speaker 4: I'm not so sure about my four one K or whatever,
- 14:36Speaker 4: and and and even people that are close to me,
- 14:39Speaker 4: I'm the financial advisor, but I'd be like, man, you
- 14:41Speaker 4: can't be looking week over week at this point. You
- 14:45Speaker 4: got to basically shut shut off, put on blinders and
- 14:47Speaker 4: then check back in like at the end of the
- 14:49Speaker 4: year or something. You can't do this week by week
- 14:50Speaker 4: you're going to drive yourself nuts.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Yeah, you know. You know, like say, the market moves
- 14:56Speaker 5: every day, something happens every day. There's news every day
- 15:01Speaker 5: you turn on the TV and there are four or
- 15:05Speaker 5: five news channels twenty four hours a day reporting on something.
- 15:09Speaker 5: And there's just no way you can silver all of
- 15:13Speaker 5: that and try to change your portfolio based on that
- 15:18Speaker 5: from day to day. It's just not a it's just
- 15:21Speaker 5: not a recipe for success. You have to think long term.
- 15:25Speaker 5: You have to stay in balance, and you have to
- 15:28Speaker 5: understand that owning companies to produce profitably produce the goods
- 15:33Speaker 5: and services over time will benefit you. And that's going
- 15:39Speaker 5: to happen no matter what's in that news story, because
- 15:42Speaker 5: people are going to continue to consume and live their
- 15:45Speaker 5: lives and use those goods and services and no matter
- 15:51Speaker 5: what happens in the news, you know, so you have
- 15:55Speaker 5: to think long term about that. You have to not
- 15:58Speaker 5: be emotional about that.
- 16:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:00Speaker 5: In the last couple of weeks, I have people calling
- 16:04Speaker 5: in panics and think that you know, it's all over
- 16:10Speaker 5: because of the tariffs or whatever is happening. And then
- 16:15Speaker 5: I've also had people come in and say, well, it's
- 16:17Speaker 5: time to get into the market. You know, the sun
- 16:19Speaker 5: is shining because my guy won the election, and really
- 16:24Speaker 5: neither of those calls are the right type of way
- 16:31Speaker 5: to think. You know, you can't be extreme one way
- 16:34Speaker 5: or the other. You have to prudently allocate your investments
- 16:38Speaker 5: to what your goals are. You know, if you are
- 16:42Speaker 5: in your retirement, you need to dial back the risk.
- 16:45Speaker 5: You need to stay more balanced. You need to have
- 16:49Speaker 5: fixed incomeing stocks so that you can eventually turn that
- 16:53Speaker 5: income stream on. It's dependable. You know, if you're thirty
- 16:56Speaker 5: years old, you think about that differently. You have the
- 16:59Speaker 5: time to take the volatility to get the larger return,
- 17:03Speaker 5: to be more aggressive, and that will work for that
- 17:08Speaker 5: younger person in a way that it won't for a
- 17:10Speaker 5: retire So you just have to know what your station
- 17:16Speaker 5: in life is, what your individual goals are, and then
- 17:18Speaker 5: invest around that and then allow the news to happen,
- 17:22Speaker 5: because it's going to happen regardless.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Great information with John Bredet for Fourth Avenue Financial. I'll
- 17:27Speaker 4: tell you what we have a question via text. We'll
- 17:29Speaker 4: do that when we get back. We'll go ahead and
- 17:31Speaker 4: take our break right now. When we come back, we'll
- 17:33Speaker 4: still have plenty more with John Bredet for Fourth Avenue Financial.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Have some questions coming in. If you want to get
- 17:37Speaker 4: on the text line, you can do that at three
- 17:38Speaker 4: zero four non three five five zero zero eighth three
- 17:41Speaker 4: zero four non three five five zero zero eight. John
- 17:43Speaker 4: Bredet with Fourth Avenue Financial Online. It's Fourth Avenue Financial
- 17:46Speaker 4: dot Com. Fourth Avenue Financial dot Com. John, you hold

- 20:20Speaker 4: John Burdett at Fourth Avenue Financial. John is our guest
- 20:22Speaker 4: this morning, coming to us from a remote location, but
- 20:24Speaker 4: that's okay. We can still hear him. Just spends advice
- 20:28Speaker 4: on how you can retire right. Into retirement. You can
- 20:31Speaker 4: give us a call this morning three zer or four three
- 20:32Speaker 4: four two eight one three one. You can also text
- 20:34Speaker 4: over a question. We've got a couple of those this morning.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Uh So we have a text question for John this morning,
- 20:39Speaker 4: and uh it has to do with I don't even
- 20:41Speaker 4: know what these things are semi transparent e f T S. John,
- 20:44Speaker 4: could you explain more about semi transparent EFT says the
- 20:48Speaker 4: three zero four three nine zero.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Okay, sure. So an exchange trade is fund. Is it
- 20:56Speaker 5: basically trades like a stock, but it's a portfolio similar
- 21:02Speaker 5: to a mutual fund, you could say. So some are passive.
- 21:07Speaker 5: So some ETFs are index based, you know, think of
- 21:11Speaker 5: the S and P five hundred indeck. So it invests
- 21:15Speaker 5: and tries to mimic the return of the S and
- 21:17Speaker 5: P five hundred for instance. That's a passive investment. In
- 21:23Speaker 5: other words, the manager's not picking and choosing, they're just
- 21:26Speaker 5: following and owning what the index owns. Then there are
- 21:30Speaker 5: active managers that are out there trying to you know,
- 21:37Speaker 5: pick their spot in the market, buying and selling that
- 21:40Speaker 5: sort of thing, and and those ets both of those
- 21:44Speaker 5: type of ETFs generally are publishing their holdings daily, so
- 21:51Speaker 5: you know what that ETF owns on a daily basis.
- 21:55Speaker 5: The semi transparent, there are regulations that require certain discloses,
- 22:00Speaker 5: but they largely keep their portfolios portions of it hidden,
- 22:05Speaker 5: and those are generally for active managers that are not
- 22:11Speaker 5: wanting to allow people to know exactly what their strategies
- 22:15Speaker 5: are or their secret sauce, so to speak. You know,
- 22:20Speaker 5: there is there a difference other than that. I mean,
- 22:23Speaker 5: most people when they buy an ETF don't dig in
- 22:25Speaker 5: daily and look at what it owns anyway. They just
- 22:27Speaker 5: look at the number at the end of the day.
- 22:31Speaker 5: You know a lot of these things. To me, it
- 22:34Speaker 5: seems more like a a marketing avenue more so than
- 22:41Speaker 5: anything else. You know, them trying to well, I've got
- 22:44Speaker 5: the secret sauce, and it's hidden from the public. You know.
- 22:51Speaker 5: I can't say whether that's good or bad, or whether
- 22:53Speaker 5: they're good or bad or anything like that. It's just
- 22:58Speaker 5: you know what what they are. But I wouldn't I
- 23:02Speaker 5: wouldn't invest or not invest just based on whether it's
- 23:05Speaker 5: a semi transparent or a traditional ETF. I'd want to
- 23:09Speaker 5: make sure that you know, there again, it's matching my
- 23:14Speaker 5: investment style and goals that I have for myself and
- 23:17Speaker 5: and and still using the traditional metrics to decide whether it's
- 23:22Speaker 5: a good investment for you.
- 23:24Speaker 4: That's good stuff. And so that's you learn something all
- 23:26Speaker 4: the time. I knew what EFTs were, I wasn't really
- 23:29Speaker 4: sure what the uh the the uh the additional specificity was.
- 23:33Speaker 4: So that's uh, that's always good to learn those types
- 23:35Speaker 4: of things. If you have additional questions, you can call
- 23:37Speaker 4: our text as well. Three zero four nine three five
- 23:39Speaker 4: five zero zero eight three zero four nine three five
- 23:41Speaker 4: five zero zero eight, or you can call in three
- 23:43Speaker 4: zero four, three four two eight one three one from
- 23:46Speaker 4: the seven one eight to two four.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Oh.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Now, as a recent graduate.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Who anticipated student debt cancel lation, I started investing right
- 23:55Speaker 4: after I graduated. Now, with that debt remaining and it's
- 23:58Speaker 4: not going to get canceled, I'm unsure how to proceed.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Should I take my retirement savings to pay off my
- 24:03Speaker 4: student loan debt or do both simultaneously.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Well, there are quite a few variables to really answering
- 24:10Speaker 5: that question. That may be something you want to, you know,
- 24:13Speaker 5: call in and talk over certainly be willing to do that,
- 24:18Speaker 5: you know, generally speaking, and a lot of it depends
- 24:21Speaker 5: on a person's individual discipline and a person's and the
- 24:25Speaker 5: interest rate that you may have on on that debt.
- 24:30Speaker 5: You know, if it's relatively low interest, maybe it makes
- 24:33Speaker 5: sense to do both strategies. If it's high interest, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 5: certainly focusing on paying that down would would be beneficial.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:45Speaker 5: The the one of the things I would think about
- 24:48Speaker 5: there is if you have it for oh one k,
- 24:49Speaker 5: is there a match, you know, if there's a match,
- 24:52Speaker 5: say a three percent match or a five percent match,
- 24:55Speaker 5: you know, maybe it makes sense to take advantage of
- 24:59Speaker 5: the match, and then anything you're saving above beyond that
- 25:03Speaker 5: put it towards the debt, particularly if it's higher interest debt.
- 25:06Speaker 5: That way, you're taking advantage of the free retirement money
- 25:09Speaker 5: and you're still trying to knock down that down that debt.
- 25:14Speaker 5: But like I say, that's not really advice at this point.
- 25:17Speaker 5: That's just how I would be thinking about it, and
- 25:21Speaker 5: your situation might be slightly different. And if you want
- 25:24Speaker 5: to call into the office, I'd be happy to talk
- 25:28Speaker 5: to you about it.
- 25:29Speaker 3: That's great information.
- 25:30Speaker 4: With the John BREDBT from Fourth Avenue Financial, some of
- 25:32Speaker 4: these things get a little bit tricky, and we want
- 25:34Speaker 4: folks to give us a give us a call or
- 25:37Speaker 4: to text us here on the program. But sometimes you know,
- 25:39Speaker 4: you have to take care of those things. They're a
- 25:42Speaker 4: little bit more nuanced than that. You need to be
- 25:43Speaker 4: able to be able to check them out a little bit.
- 25:45Speaker 4: And you can check out John's office if if you
- 25:47Speaker 4: want to do that. John BREDBT at fourth Avenue. Financial
- 25:49Speaker 4: is located here in downtown Charleston at one seventy Court
- 25:52Speaker 4: Street is the address that's right across from the Town
- 25:54Speaker 4: Center Mall. Their phone numbers three'es are A four seven,
- 25:56Speaker 4: four six seven nine seven seven. Threes are A four
- 25:58Speaker 4: seven four six seven nine seven seven. So if you
- 26:01Speaker 4: have any interest at all uh in talking to John
- 26:04Speaker 4: or following up with these questions, you're more than welcome
- 26:06Speaker 4: to get a hold of John over there. I got
- 26:07Speaker 4: one more text question so we can we can hopefully
- 26:11Speaker 4: move into this one. Let's see, my son is thirty
- 26:14Speaker 4: five years old and has a chronic medical condition. He's
- 26:18Speaker 4: done a good job with retirement so far, but I'm
- 26:20Speaker 4: worried about where health care is going to go in
- 26:23Speaker 4: the future. He's self employed and has trouble as it
- 26:27Speaker 4: is so, I guess that's somebody looking for sort of
- 26:31Speaker 4: like how do you fund your health care? I'm not sure,
- 26:33Speaker 4: really sure what the question might be.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that that could be tricky. Certainly, healthcare
- 26:42Speaker 5: can can can be very expensive depending on what your
- 26:47Speaker 5: coverages are. You know, certainly having a good health plan
- 26:51Speaker 5: makes makes a lot of sense. I know from from
- 26:55Speaker 5: from some experience. Certain medications can be very expensive and
- 27:00Speaker 5: and some of them may or may not be covered
- 27:02Speaker 5: by certain medical plans. So certainly, you know, understanding those
- 27:07Speaker 5: things make a lot of sense. I mean, there's potentially,
- 27:12Speaker 5: you know, health savings accounts, things like that that a
- 27:14Speaker 5: person may be able to do, may be eligible for. However,
- 27:19Speaker 5: I'm not sure that that would just based on the question,
- 27:23Speaker 5: it sounds like there may be some financial strain already.
- 27:26Speaker 5: I don't know if there's an ability to save beyond
- 27:29Speaker 5: for those type of expenses or not. You know, without
- 27:35Speaker 5: knowing that the real particulars, it's hard to say, but
- 27:39Speaker 5: there are a few things you want to think about.
- 27:42Speaker 5: And you know, healthcare is a big unknown even for
- 27:46Speaker 5: retiree you know, particularly those that retire early before before
- 27:53Speaker 5: Medicare kicks in. You know, how do you bridge that gap.
- 27:57Speaker 5: So there are a lot of questions there even without
- 28:01Speaker 5: you know, taking into it to account the issue of
- 28:04Speaker 5: the chronic illness. So it's a big it's a big issue.
- 28:09Speaker 5: It's something that does keep people in the workforce, maybe
- 28:11Speaker 5: longer than financially they could do otherwise. And but you know,
- 28:19Speaker 5: without without the funds to to actively save for that,
- 28:24Speaker 5: which which in this question it sounds like might be
- 28:26Speaker 5: a struggle that you know that could be an issue.
- 28:30Speaker 5: And you don't know government aid and funding and programs,
- 28:37Speaker 5: you know, not just in this current political environment, but
- 28:40Speaker 5: but any political environment. Those things are subject to to
- 28:45Speaker 5: change over time. I mean, these programs, many of these
- 28:48Speaker 5: health programs have been under some strain for for decades,
- 28:52Speaker 5: and you know, eventually some of those things may have
- 28:55Speaker 5: to be addressed, and you don't really know where those
- 28:58Speaker 5: are going to fall. So, you know, as much as
- 29:01Speaker 5: you can save on your own, you know, prepare, you
- 29:05Speaker 5: certainly do that, but but you know you have to
- 29:10Speaker 5: have the wherewithal to be able to get that saving
- 29:12Speaker 5: some place.
- 29:14Speaker 4: So this person, I got your text message listener, and
- 29:16Speaker 4: so they followed up, and again I'm not exactly sure
- 29:19Speaker 4: what this means. Maybe this isn't something I know about,
- 29:22Speaker 4: so maybe you can help me out. Do you know
- 29:23Speaker 4: what an able account is?
- 29:25Speaker 3: A b l E?
- 29:28Speaker 5: Because this is a stumpy advisor day.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's related. I think it.
- 29:33Speaker 4: It's like a it's like a it's like a h
- 29:36Speaker 4: S A I think, but it's for disabled for disabled individuals.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Yeah, tax advantage, uh, savings account. I mean, certainly, you know,
- 29:46Speaker 5: anything that you can do is great. But but like
- 29:51Speaker 5: you say, the way the question first started, it seemed
- 29:54Speaker 5: like there was some financial strain just to do the
- 29:56Speaker 5: the the the retirement I think.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I I think you need to have your son called
- 30:02Speaker 4: John is going to be your best solution for this
- 30:04Speaker 4: because this is probably pretty complicated.
- 30:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that's probably the best thing. You know, we
- 30:10Speaker 5: could walk through it and just see where the situation lies.
- 30:13Speaker 5: And you know, like I say, there are certain things
- 30:17Speaker 5: that you can do, but you have to have the
- 30:19Speaker 5: wherewe's all to do it.
- 30:20Speaker 4: I guess I can see where the concern can come
- 30:24Speaker 4: from if you're somebody that's kind of struggling with that already,
- 30:27Speaker 4: if you have medical conditions and you're also self employed
- 30:31Speaker 4: but gainfully so, so I mean you're making pardon me,
- 30:34Speaker 4: you're making the ball roll down the hill. But at
- 30:36Speaker 4: the same time, there's a lot of uncertainty out there,
- 30:39Speaker 4: especially around those types of programs, so I can understand
- 30:41Speaker 4: maybe how you're a little extra nervous or something like that.
- 30:45Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, And you know the thing with the able account,
- 30:48Speaker 5: I mean it allows you to have a pool of
- 30:51Speaker 5: money that doesn't affect eligibility and the other government programs,
- 30:57Speaker 5: so that you know, that may be something to look at.
- 31:00Speaker 5: But like you say, I don't know enough about the
- 31:02Speaker 5: situation to know if if if that is the case here,
- 31:10Speaker 5: you know, Medicaid, things like that. You know, I think
- 31:14Speaker 5: the able account would work with that and not exclude
- 31:16Speaker 5: a person, but I don't know if that's the case
- 31:20Speaker 5: here because this person is gainfully employed.
- 31:22Speaker 3: So anyway, that makes it interesting something.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Yeah, this is why you need a financial advisor, and
- 31:30Speaker 4: this is you can get more direct advice on something
- 31:33Speaker 4: like this. You can give John a call at his
- 31:34Speaker 4: office his numbers three zero four seven four six seven
- 31:36Speaker 4: one seven seven three zero four seven four six seven
- 31:39Speaker 4: one seven seven for any questions you have that might
- 31:40Speaker 4: be a little bit more complicated than we can tackle
- 31:43Speaker 4: on air or frankly, if it's something that you would
- 31:46Speaker 4: rather not discuss on air even either though, we encourage
- 31:48Speaker 4: you that you can use an a list or not
- 31:50Speaker 4: even give your name. This last person didn't even give
- 31:53Speaker 4: their name, so you're welcome to address that any way
- 31:55Speaker 4: that you would like to, to make sure to maintain
- 31:57Speaker 4: your anonymity if if that's what you're up to, again,
- 32:00Speaker 4: let me make sure you have the information for John.
- 32:01Speaker 4: It's fourth Avenue Financial located here in downtown Charles. And
- 32:04Speaker 4: again that number three or four seven four six seven
- 32:06Speaker 4: on seven seven.
- 32:08Speaker 5: Yes, And in the train of thought here of talking tentatively,
- 32:16Speaker 5: it looks like the twenty ninth is going to be
- 32:18Speaker 5: the dollars of donuts at the Vintage and Vines, just
- 32:23Speaker 5: to pass that along. Don't have the Facebook event set
- 32:26Speaker 5: up yet, but follow the page and when I get
- 32:28Speaker 5: that posted you'll you'll know about that. But it looks
- 32:32Speaker 5: like the twenty ninth, and we usually do that from
- 32:34Speaker 5: ten to eleven am.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Nice, So that's going to be at Vintage and Vines
- 32:40Speaker 4: over in South Charleston. And again it's kind of just
- 32:43Speaker 4: an informal meeting of folks that want to get together
- 32:45Speaker 4: and talk about stuff. That's going on with retirement, any
- 32:49Speaker 4: questions that you might have. It's crowdsourcing these things and
- 32:51Speaker 4: just kind of having an informal discussion.
- 32:53Speaker 3: That's a great thing.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's fun. We eat some donuts too, and
- 32:58Speaker 5: you can never go.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Wrong when you do that.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's we'll always treat You're right. You could get
- 33:04Speaker 4: in with a final question if you would like. You
- 33:06Speaker 4: can text threes erre four now three five five zeros
- 33:08Speaker 4: ero eight three zero four now three five thive zero
- 33:10Speaker 4: zero eighth, or maybe a quick phone call three zero
- 33:12Speaker 4: four three four two eight one three one uh.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Looking uh to next week.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Of course we'll have another retire Right Radio next Monday
- 33:19Speaker 4: morning at eight twenty.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Anything that we should have our pulse on.
- 33:22Speaker 4: As part we tell people not to look at the headlines,
- 33:24Speaker 4: which is true, but things do come in that matter, things,
- 33:26Speaker 4: earnings reports, different things like that. Any big indicators or
- 33:30Speaker 4: news that are coming out this week.
- 33:32Speaker 5: This week we'll have a reading a CPI, so we'll
- 33:34Speaker 5: see how inflation is coming in, which which will tell
- 33:39Speaker 5: us a little bit about how many rate cuts we
- 33:41Speaker 5: may or may not get this year. You know, we
- 33:43Speaker 5: were looking at you know a few months ago it's like, oh,
- 33:47Speaker 5: we're going to get five, six, seven rate cuts this year,
- 33:49Speaker 5: and then it went to we might not get any
- 33:53Speaker 5: rate cuts this year, and now we're back to the
- 33:55Speaker 5: market thinking that we're going to get one or two. So,
- 34:00Speaker 5: you know, nobody really knows. And as you can tell,
- 34:03Speaker 5: it moves from report to report that comes out, the
- 34:06Speaker 5: expectations move. That's why it's so hard to predict these things.
- 34:10Speaker 5: You know, the market in general, has the bond market,
- 34:13Speaker 5: has been predicting these rate cuts and they've been wrong
- 34:16Speaker 5: all along, and they're basing that off of these news
- 34:20Speaker 5: stories that come out. And you know, if the market
- 34:25Speaker 5: in general, the trillions of dollars that are invested in
- 34:28Speaker 5: the market, are getting it wrong from report to report,
- 34:32Speaker 5: how's one individual going to outguess that they're not. And
- 34:36Speaker 5: so the best thing to do is focus on your
- 34:39Speaker 5: situation and what's right for you and.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Stick with it and quit trying to predict anything. It's
- 34:44Speaker 4: very difficult to do that. I was I watched day
- 34:47Speaker 4: I think it was a Ted talk or something years
- 34:49Speaker 4: and years ago, and it was going over different people
- 34:51Speaker 4: and predicting and how predictions work, and was using even
- 34:54Speaker 4: famous examples like Nostra damas or whatever it is. It
- 34:57Speaker 4: seems like all these people that were great at predicting
- 34:59Speaker 4: things were only great at predicting them after the fact.
- 35:01Speaker 4: You go back and read their stuff, like, oh, look
- 35:03Speaker 4: what they said about this. Isn't that curious that we
- 35:05Speaker 4: find them after the event has arrived?
- 35:08Speaker 3: Right? Right? Right?
