- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, the start of a new
- 0:15week, and it is the 14th of October, and you have tapped on
- 0:21play to invite me in. Hello, I hope you're going well.
- 0:24Me. Ah, I'm going great, thanks for
- 0:26asking. We are continuing to read
- 0:28through this lovely book, Nehemiah.
- 0:30And this book, as well as being used as a historical document,
- 0:34it is also used as a exposition on how to be an awesome leader
- 0:39today because Nehemiah, well, he kind of rocked it.
- 0:42So a lot of people look to Nehemiah as an example for how
- 0:45we can trust God but also be bold in our actions, in getting
- 0:50things done, knowing that God is on our side.
- 0:53And so we continue this story in the voice of Nehemiah, hearing
- 0:57about him in his transition from royal cupbearer in the courts of
- 1:02Persia all the way to governor over in that old land that their
- 1:07people have been restored to. So come with me, friends, all
- 1:11the way back to hear the story recorded in Nehemiah Chapter 2.
- 1:26Early the following spring, in the month of Nissan, during the
- 1:3020th year of King Artaxerxes reign, I was serving the king
- 1:34his wine. I'd never before appeared sad in
- 1:37his presence. So the king asked me, Why are
- 1:40you looking so sad? You don't look sick to me.
- 1:44You must be deeply troubled. Then I was terrified, but I
- 1:48replied, Long live the king, how can I not be sad?
- 1:53For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins and the
- 1:56gates have been destroyed by fire.
- 1:59The king asked, Well, how can I help you with a prayer to the
- 2:04God of heaven? I replied, if it pleased the
- 2:07king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me
- 2:11to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.
- 2:16The king with the queen sitting beside him, asked, How long will
- 2:20you be gone? When will you return?
- 2:23After I told him how long I would be gone, the king agreed
- 2:27to my request. I also said to the king, If it
- 2:31pleased the king, let me have letters addressed to the
- 2:34governors of the province West of the Euphrates River,
- 2:37instructing them to let me travel safely through their
- 2:39territories on my way to Judah. And please give me a letter
- 2:43addressed to Asaph, the manager of the King's forest,
- 2:47instructing him to give me timber.
- 2:49I will need it to make beams for the gates of the temple
- 2:52fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.
- 2:57And the king granted these requests because the gracious
- 3:00hand of God was on me. When I came to the governors of
- 3:04the province West of the Euphrates River, I delivered the
- 3:08King's letters to them. The king, I should add, had sent
- 3:12along army officers and horsemen to protect me.
- 3:15But when sun belapped the horror night and to buy the Ammonite
- 3:19official a heard of my arrival, they were very displeased that
- 3:23someone had come to help the people of Israel.
- 3:26So I arrived in Jerusalem three days later.
- 3:29I slipped out during the night, taking only a few others with
- 3:32me. I had not told anyone about the
- 3:35plans God had put in my heart for Jerusalem.
- 3:38We took no pack animals with us except the donkey I was riding.
- 3:42After dark I went out through the valley gate, passed the
- 3:46Jackal's well, and over the dung gate to inspect the broken walls
- 3:50and burnt gates. Then I went to the fountain gate
- 3:54and to the King's pool, but my donkey couldn't get through the
- 3:57rubble. So though it was still dark, I
- 4:01went up the Kidron Valley instead, inspecting the wall
- 4:05before I turned back and entered again at the valley gate.
- 4:09The city officials did not know I had been out there or what I
- 4:12was doing, for I had not yet said anything to anyone about my
- 4:16plans. I had not yet spoken to the
- 4:19Jewish leaders, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or anyone
- 4:22else in the administration. But now I said to them, you know
- 4:27very well what trouble we are in.
- 4:30Jerusalem lies and ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by
- 4:34fire. Let us rebuild the wall of
- 4:36Jerusalem and end this disgrace. Then I told them about how the
- 4:41gracious hand of God had been on me and about my conversation
- 4:45with the king. They replied at once, yes, let's
- 4:49rebuild the wall. So they began the good work.
- 4:53But when Sanbulat, Tobiah and Gheshem, the Arab herd of our
- 4:57plan, they scoffed contemptuously.
- 5:00What are you doing? Are you rebelling against the
- 5:04king? They asked.
- 5:06I replied. The God of heaven will help us
- 5:09succeed. We his servants will start
- 5:13rebuilding this wall. But you have no share, legal
- 5:17right or historic claim in Jerusalem.
- 5:29Ah, Lord, thank you for the story of Nehemiah.
- 5:33And you move in his heart and give him this mission.
- 5:36But instead of running headlong into it, he does the groundwork.
- 5:40He gets the validation of the King and that protection before
- 5:44he heads off so that when he does come across the challenges
- 5:48that he expects, he's one step ahead, able to do your work.
- 5:54Lord, as you move us into action for you and your Kingdom, Lord,
- 5:59give us the wisdom we need to begin wisely, to set ourselves
- 6:04up for success, and to hold firm to the truth that You have
- 6:09already set us up. Because you have won the war,
- 6:14You have been victorious over sin and death, and You welcome
- 6:18us with wide open arms into your family and into your eternal
- 6:23embrace. And so, Lord, help us always
- 6:27keep that in the front of our mind that we are loved children
- 6:33of the victorious God of the universe and everything else is
- 6:38secondary. Our Lord, bless us today as we
- 6:42go about doing your will and sharing your love and that
- 6:47incredible good news that Jesus came to tell us all about South.
- 6:53Lord, we just ask for your blessing, we thank you for your
- 6:57love, and we pray all of this in that name of Jesus, Amen.
