- 0:26Speaker 1: now officially official. Kellen Moore officially the nineteenth head coach
- 0:35Speaker 1: in New Orleans Saints history. A horribly kept secret over
- 0:41Speaker 1: the past two weeks. Saints says, we know, trying to
- 0:44Speaker 1: do everything by the books, but everyone knew this was
- 0:46Speaker 1: ultimately the endgame, barring, as it was said many times,
- 0:49Speaker 1: on some unforeseen roadblock. But here we are, Tuesday afternoon,
- 0:55Speaker 1: after reports all morning that it had been done, the
- 0:57Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints issue the press release and Helen Moore
- 1:00Speaker 1: is the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:06Speaker 1: We'll start with a reaction to the higher Why I
- 1:08Speaker 1: like it, why I don't, what's most important moving forward?
- 1:11Speaker 1: All that good stuff first, and foremost, how should we
- 1:20Speaker 1: feel about this higher and not as good as Detroit?
- 1:25Speaker 1: I mean, the bell of the ball was Ben Johnson.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He was the guy everybody wanted, and he's in Chicago,
- 1:33Speaker 1: left Detroit for Chicago. How do we feel not as
- 1:39Speaker 1: good as the Jets? The guy you really wanted was
- 1:42Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn. He picked the Jets instead of you. You
- 1:46Speaker 1: wanted Joe Brady. He decided to stay in Buffalo. You
- 1:50Speaker 1: wanted to talk to Cliff Kingsbury. He decided to stay
- 1:53Speaker 1: in Washington. So you got far down your list. But
- 1:57Speaker 1: it doesn't mean you can't find a winner. Doesn't mean
- 2:00Speaker 1: you can't hit on the highre just because it wasn't
- 2:04Speaker 1: your first choice. And the Eagles playoff run does give
- 2:10Speaker 1: Kellen Moore a really significant boost, doesn't it. I mean,
- 2:14Speaker 1: we were not talking about Kellen Moore at all before
- 2:18Speaker 1: Championship Sunday. As a matter of fact, I remember looking
- 2:22Speaker 1: at those odds when Joe Brady announced he was staying
- 2:25Speaker 1: in Buffalo. There were seven candidates left on the list,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and we were talking about Joe Brady and Mike McCarthy.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Anthony Weaver had interviewed. We were talking about Mike Cafeck.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Kellen Moore was sixth out of the seven on the
- 2:42Speaker 1: list as far as odds, and then they went and
- 2:45Speaker 1: hung fifty five on the Commanders in the NFC Championship game.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Boom Stock Skyrockets Saints interviewing the next day, that's the
- 2:55Speaker 1: path they're heading. The last two weeks have been a whirlwin.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They hang forty on the Chiefs in the Super Bowl,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you feel much better. And
- 3:02Speaker 1: you look at Philly this year, eighth in the NFL
- 3:06Speaker 1: in total offense, seventh in the NFL in scoring offense,
- 3:10Speaker 1: second in the NFL in rushing offense, twenty ninth in
- 3:14Speaker 1: passing offense. And that's the That's a passing offense that
- 3:20Speaker 1: had its Aj Brown, Devonte Smith, Dallas Goddard. You were
- 3:24Speaker 1: twenty ninth in the NFL in passing offense. Only three
- 3:27Speaker 1: teams were worse at throwing the football with all those weapons. Now,
- 3:32Speaker 1: a big part of that is because you had a
- 3:34Speaker 1: two thousand yard rusher. But the Eagles this year won
- 3:37Speaker 1: with defense and running the football. And I had news
- 3:40Speaker 1: for you, coach, Sakwan Barkley ain't coming to New Orleans
- 3:44Speaker 1: with Kellen Moore. So they're going to have to do
- 3:47Speaker 1: it differently in New Orleans, and they did this year
- 3:49Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. But I'll tell you there's reasons why I
- 3:52Speaker 1: like the higher. From the moment the New Orleans Saints
- 3:56Speaker 1: fired Dennis Allen, I sat here and said, my choice
- 4:00Speaker 1: is a young, offensive minded head coach. The NFL is
- 4:04Speaker 1: a copycat league. Look at the trends, go find a
- 4:07Speaker 1: young offensive minded coach. My preference was off the McVeigh,
- 4:11Speaker 1: Shanahan Tree. You didn't get that exactly, but you still
- 4:18Speaker 1: got a guy AT's thirty six years old, who's the
- 4:21Speaker 1: youngest head coach in the NFL now, who of course
- 4:24Speaker 1: is offensive minded. Was a great college quarterback at Boise State.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We know he won fifty He was fifty and three
- 4:31Speaker 1: during his time. Is that as the quarterback at Boise State,
- 4:34Speaker 1: came into the NFL, played parts of seven seasons in
- 4:37Speaker 1: the NFL, went right into coaching Cowboys, Chargers, Eagles, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: now the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. You
- 4:44Speaker 1: look at the best coaches in the league, Andy Reid,
- 4:48Speaker 1: Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Nick Sirianni, who just won a
- 4:51Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Guys like Matt Lafleur, Jim Harbaugh offensive minded coaches.
- 4:55Speaker 1: There are exceptions, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Dan Campbell, there's
- 4:58Speaker 1: good coaches that are offensive minded coaches. But you could
- 5:01Speaker 1: see the trend where the NFL is going. And it's
- 5:05Speaker 1: also interesting because he's been an offensive coordinator now at
- 5:09Speaker 1: three different stops Dallas, the Chargers, and the Eagles. He
- 5:13Speaker 1: had Dak Prescott justin Herbert Jalen Hurts, three very different
- 5:20Speaker 1: quarterbacks in their skill sets and their experience, in their styles,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and they managed to get going with each of them. Now,
- 5:30Speaker 1: there is also legitimate reason to question this. There's obviously
- 5:36Speaker 1: the lack of experience. Came into the NFL very young
- 5:42Speaker 1: and is rapidly ascended, but as I just mentioned, we've
- 5:46Speaker 1: seen young coaches have great success. During his time in Dallas,
- 5:52Speaker 1: they were successful statistically four seasons as the offensive coordinator.
- 5:56Speaker 1: He was the play caller, by the way, it was
- 5:58Speaker 1: not McCarthy. Moore was the play call In twenty nineteen,
- 6:01Speaker 1: they were sixth in total offense, then they went to seventeenth.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Then first they led the NFL in total offense in
- 6:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, and then in twenty twenty two they
- 6:11Speaker 1: were third, so the lowest he finished was seventeenth. The
- 6:15Speaker 1: other years were first, third, and sixth. But last year
- 6:19Speaker 1: again that was Mike McCarthy's offense. Veteran quarterback in dak
- 6:24Speaker 1: goes to the Chargers for one season. They're twenty first
- 6:27Speaker 1: in the NFL in total offense. That's with Justin Herbert Boom.
- 6:31Speaker 1: They're fired, and then he's off to Philly. Emmett Smith
- 6:37Speaker 1: over the past three years has been pretty vocal Cowboys
- 6:40Speaker 1: legend about his lack of confidence or criticism. I should say,
- 6:48Speaker 1: in Kellen Moore play number two, please, this was just
- 6:50Speaker 1: a smidge of Emmettsmith. I believe this was an interview
- 6:53Speaker 1: with USA Today. Give a listen.
- 6:55Speaker 2: See in I pass on the Kellen. I think we
- 6:59Speaker 2: was just calling down plays just to be called the plays.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I don't think we was building upon anything. There was
- 7:03Speaker 2: nothing that established this that made sense to play off
- 7:07Speaker 2: of that and then go to here and here. It
- 7:09Speaker 2: was this play call, and then every nine and then
- 7:11Speaker 2: we're gonna throw a little trick play in, and the
- 7:13Speaker 2: trick play would work sometime, then sometime we won't be
- 7:16Speaker 2: a wasted play, and all that kind of stuff. Lose
- 7:18Speaker 2: a momentum gaining momentum. It was just too much.
- 7:21Speaker 1: That's Emitt Smith. That ain't me saying it. That's Emitt
- 7:24Speaker 1: Smith saying it. You're gonna air the counter to that
- 7:27Speaker 1: as well. And clearly they're pretty good offensively this year
- 7:31Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. But ultimately the sample size will grow and
- 7:36Speaker 1: we'll make that determination about his success or failures. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: for Kellen Moore, there's two really important decisions from jump
- 7:43Speaker 1: he's got to make. Number one is his defensive coordinator,
- 7:46Speaker 1: because we have just seen this, not only in New
- 7:49Speaker 1: Orleans but across the NFL. If you're a head coach
- 7:52Speaker 1: that specializes on one side of the ball, you gotta
- 7:54Speaker 1: nail it on the other side of the ball. We'll
- 7:57Speaker 1: get Dennis Allen. He retains Pete Carmichael. The defense in
- 8:01Speaker 1: New Orleans under Allen the first year was still good.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The offense was not. We can talk about injuries, but
- 8:11Speaker 1: the reality is what it is. Your record. You are
- 8:14Speaker 1: what your record says you are. Go back to Sean Payton.
- 8:17Speaker 1: When Sean Payton was rolling offensively great. What did it
- 8:20Speaker 1: look like when Steve Spagnola and Rob Ryan were the
- 8:23Speaker 1: defensive coordinators? You were a sub five hundred team with
- 8:25Speaker 1: Sean Payton and Drew Brees. You gotta nail the other
- 8:27Speaker 1: side of the ball. A lot of the scuttle butt
- 8:30Speaker 1: is at Brandon Staley, who was the head coach with
- 8:33Speaker 1: the Chargers, who hired More in Los Angeles, could be
- 8:37Speaker 1: the front runner for that job. We'll see, but you
- 8:40Speaker 1: got to nail that higher. The other is what do
- 8:42Speaker 1: you do with Derek Carr? Did the Saints get Kellen
- 8:46Speaker 1: Moore and then so doing promising him that Derek Carr
- 8:50Speaker 1: will be back so you have a better chance of
- 8:51Speaker 1: success in year one? Or did they promise patient say look,
- 8:55Speaker 1: we're gonna move on from Derek Carr, but we're gonna
- 8:57Speaker 1: give you patients to build this thing the right way
- 9:00Speaker 1: with the guy you want under center. I don't know
- 9:02Speaker 1: the answer to that, will learn in time, But those
- 9:04Speaker 1: are the two biggest questions Kellen Moore's got to answer. First,
- 9:07Speaker 1: who's your DC and what are you gonna do with
- 9:09Speaker 1: Derek Carr. You get those answers, we'll have a much
- 9:11Speaker 1: better idea of what New Orleans is gonna be. But
- 9:13Speaker 1: the bottom line is it does not matter. It does
- 9:17Speaker 1: not matter how good of a coach, Kellen Moore is
- 9:23Speaker 1: or anybody if you don't have roster and culture. Look
- 9:30Speaker 1: at New England. Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in
- 9:34Speaker 1: the history of football. The man won six Super Bowls
- 9:37Speaker 1: as a head coach. When Tom Brady left, they went
- 9:41Speaker 1: seven and nine, ten and seven, eight and nine, four
- 9:43Speaker 1: and thirteen. He's fired. You can literally be the greatest
- 9:47Speaker 1: coach of all time, but when you don't have players
- 9:51Speaker 1: in culture, you cannot win. So will Mickey Loomis get
- 9:59Speaker 1: out of the way and get this roster younger and
- 10:04Speaker 1: more talented? That's the question bigger than anything else, because
- 10:10Speaker 1: I don't care if it's Kellen Moore, Bill Belichick or
- 10:12Speaker 1: anybody in between. If this roster doesn't get younger and
- 10:16Speaker 1: more talented, nobody can win. Because right now all you
- 10:21Speaker 1: have is a bunch of bad debt from years of
- 10:26Speaker 1: buying on credit. You have spent years swiping that credit card,
- 10:34Speaker 1: kicking the bill down the road, and all you got
- 10:38Speaker 1: to show forward is a bunch of veteran players with
- 10:40Speaker 1: no rings that are past their prime that cost you
- 10:43Speaker 1: way too much. So what's it gonna be, Mick, Are
- 10:50Speaker 1: you actually gonna give your young head coach a chance,
- 10:53Speaker 1: or are you gonna allow that mountain of debt to
- 10:57Speaker 1: hang around his neck like an albatross destined to drag
- 11:01Speaker 1: him to the bottom of the ocean. We'll find out
- 11:04Speaker 1: in short order. Kellen Moore, new head coach of the
- 11:07Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints
