- 1:56Speaker 1: big man with a two handed hammer floating to the
- 2:00Speaker 1: to throw it down and stretch the Michigan lead a
- 2:03Speaker 1: seven fifty two to forty five.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Shimble it back to them on the right hand wing.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Here's Caravan top of the key, launches of three.
- 2:11Speaker 1: He hits Caravan hit the triple and Yukon has knife
- 2:15Speaker 1: down sick tree.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It takes it away, flips it behind.
- 2:18Speaker 1: This shot won't go under the basket and it would.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Not fall for solo ball on a balance of the fort.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Johnson on the run bobbles it, gets it back to
- 2:28Speaker 1: gay o' gaal kicks it out to McInnis, which three

- 3:30Speaker 1: scooped up by Gaye.
- 3:31Speaker 3: He'll throw up to the other end of the floor.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Caravan tracks it down with two seconds, with one and
- 3:36Speaker 1: he comes at the half court Actions nineteen eighty nine.
- 3:40Speaker 1: There's been a black space in the Michigan trucky case.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We'll write their name Michigan the twenty twenty six men's
- 3:49Speaker 1: basketball National champions They knock off Yukon sixty nine to
- 3:54Speaker 1: sixty three to win the school's second men's basketball championship.
- 4:03Speaker 5: It also ends a drought for the Big Ten in
- 4:06Speaker 5: winning national championships, the first since two thousand, when that
- 4:11Speaker 5: other Michigan school, Michigan State, claimed the national title.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 4:19Speaker 5: hundred The Zone.
- 4:20Speaker 4: My name is Craig Wait. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 4:24Speaker 5: We bring you the program today from UFCU Dishfaulk Field,
- 4:27Speaker 5: where the Long Horn baseball team will be back in
- 4:30Speaker 5: action tonight at home Texas will be taking on the
- 4:33Speaker 5: Cardinals of the University of Incarnate Word.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Down in San Antonio, IW.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Six point fifteen is the pregame start time for that
- 4:40Speaker 5: and six point thirty the first pitch, and you can
- 4:42Speaker 5: hear it on our sister station one to three point
- 4:44Speaker 5: one FM, Austin's eighty station, as well as on the
- 4:47Speaker 5: iHeartRadio app and also on the Texas Longhorns app. The
- 4:51Speaker 5: producer of the program move put together that fine montage
- 4:55Speaker 5: of Michigan capturing the national title is none other than
- 4:58Speaker 5: Jay Carman. I say find montage was if you're a
- 5:02Speaker 5: Yukon fan, maybe it doesn't come across as fine since
- 5:05Speaker 5: they wound up and I had to, I'm glad I
- 5:09Speaker 5: was reminded of this in watching the highlights last night, Jake.
- 5:13Speaker 5: First time ever Yukon Is lost in the national championship game.
- 5:18Speaker 5: They were going for their seventh and it was the
- 5:20Speaker 5: first time they'd ever lost in a national final. They've
- 5:24Speaker 5: been a thousand percent to that point, so it's a
- 5:26Speaker 5: little bit different story for the kids from.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Stores for sure.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 6: I think I heard that on a different show this
- 5:32Speaker 6: week and it kind of took me off guard. Yukon
- 5:34Speaker 6: what they had been to the final four six times
- 5:37Speaker 6: and won it all, cut down the nets all six times.
- 5:39Speaker 6: So pretty incredible stat when you think about it, and
- 5:42Speaker 6: pretty fascinating game last night. I was not expecting Yukon
- 5:47Speaker 6: to be able to turn it into that type of game,
- 5:50Speaker 6: and yet it still wasn't enough.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Yeah, and you know, Yukon did kind of as Tracy
- 5:58Speaker 5: Wolfson said to that Dan Hurley muck it up a
- 6:02Speaker 5: bit and he kind of chuckled about that, and in fact,
- 6:06Speaker 5: I guess you probably heard it in his postgame press conference.
- 6:09Speaker 5: He was very happy with those officials, the ones who
- 6:12Speaker 5: worked the game, and said if I had those for
- 6:15Speaker 5: every game from here on that I'd be happy. I'd
- 6:17Speaker 5: be fine with it because he liked the fact that
- 6:21Speaker 5: they let it go and let it be physical. But
- 6:23Speaker 5: you know, Michigan proved to be a team for all
- 6:26Speaker 5: seasons that they could that they could win, that they
- 6:29Speaker 5: could win by shooting threes. They had averaged eight three
- 6:34Speaker 5: pointers a game in NCAA tournament play coming in. They
- 6:37Speaker 5: got two last night, and they were one for fourteen
- 6:40Speaker 5: at one point that what was it? It wasn't until
- 6:45Speaker 5: was it like seven minutes to go in the game.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Jake that they got their first shot from that wasn't
- 6:52Speaker 5: a paint point. Everything had been in the lane and
- 6:56Speaker 5: the paint or underneath the basket. They didn't have anything
- 6:58Speaker 5: out on the perimeter until late in the ball game.
- 7:04Speaker 5: But what they did prove is that they could be
- 7:06Speaker 5: any number of ways and ultimately proved they were the
- 7:09Speaker 5: best team in the.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Country and improving all of this.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Craig with Ljkson, who was their kind of sixth man,
- 7:15Speaker 6: a very important guard in their rotation sideline for the year.
- 7:18Speaker 6: With the torn acl and with the Axel Londeborg playing
- 7:21Speaker 6: at less than one hundred percent last night, I thought
- 7:23Speaker 6: he looked pretty healthy at times, others certainly not like himself.
- 7:27Speaker 6: That was a big topic throughout the broadcast, Jaxel london
- 7:30Speaker 6: Borg kind of berating himself in the halftime interview. But
- 7:34Speaker 6: that just goes to show you the depth and the
- 7:35Speaker 6: versatility and those types of things that really paid dividends
- 7:38Speaker 6: for Michigan in this game. You're right, they had Michigan
- 7:41Speaker 6: went the entire first half without making a shot outside
- 7:44Speaker 6: of the painting they were over their first seventeen and
- 7:46Speaker 6: then Elliott Coudo in the second segment of that second
- 7:49Speaker 6: half hit a couple of Big three's, Trey McKenny knocked
- 7:51Speaker 6: one down from the mid range, and that lifted the
- 7:53Speaker 6: lid for Michigan.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Yeah, and you know, I think that that they proved
- 8:02Speaker 5: to be about as adaptable as any college basketball team
- 8:07Speaker 5: we've seen, you know, in recent times, that they could
- 8:11Speaker 5: adapt to the situation losing losing a.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Player, no problem, next man up.
- 8:16Speaker 5: We hear teams talk about that all time in a
- 8:18Speaker 5: variety of sports, next man up. But they truly showed
- 8:21Speaker 5: that they could do that. You're not gonna we're not
- 8:25Speaker 5: hitting from outside. Okay, we'll find a way to muscle
- 8:28Speaker 5: an inside. You're not going to keep us. You're going
- 8:31Speaker 5: to prevent us from getting high percentage shots by fouling us. Fine,
- 8:35Speaker 5: we'll make free throws. I mean twenty in a row
- 8:37Speaker 5: at one point, missed a couple down the stretch. But
- 8:39Speaker 5: otherwise they were really really good. And that's what I
- 8:42Speaker 5: meant by a team for all seasons. Really they could
- 8:44Speaker 5: they could pretty much take whatever they needed to take
- 8:48Speaker 5: and make it work and still find a way to
- 8:52Speaker 5: beat you. And I do give Yukon credit for hanging
- 8:55Speaker 5: in there. And it was a ballgame, and it was
- 8:57Speaker 5: pretty tight all the way down the the stretch.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Even so, it was it was, it was. It was
- 9:05Speaker 4: interesting to.
- 9:06Speaker 5: To to see how Michigan attacked them when they had
- 9:10Speaker 5: to go different routes because I give Dan Hurley credit,
- 9:13Speaker 5: I give you Ukon credit for making it less comfortable
- 9:19Speaker 5: for Michigan. You know, they got such a big jump
- 9:22Speaker 5: on Arizona early. They got big jumps on all the
- 9:24Speaker 5: other teams very well. I think they wound up with
- 9:26Speaker 5: the third highest six game point total in NCAA tournament history.
- 9:32Speaker 5: And and yet Yukon kind of, you know, like I said,
- 9:35Speaker 5: muddied it up in the first half when Michigan wasn't
- 9:38Speaker 5: hitting from the perimeter. But they adjusted. And what is
- 9:42Speaker 5: it that Sarks isn't we heard? We heard Vic Schaefer
- 9:44Speaker 5: said the other day. You know about the dinosaurs, there
- 9:46Speaker 5: is the reason they're not around anymore. They couldn't adapt
- 9:49Speaker 5: and and Michigan was able to adapt.
- 9:51Speaker 4: So uh, their.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Second ever national championship game and there uh and their
- 9:57Speaker 5: first national champion ship since nineteen eighty nine when they
- 10:03Speaker 5: had Rameil Robinson and Glenn Rice and all of those
- 10:06Speaker 5: guys that Steve Fisher stepped in to coach after Bill
- 10:10Speaker 5: Frieder was forced to resign there late in the season.
- 10:14Speaker 5: He took over and they went six and one won
- 10:15Speaker 5: the national title. So Michigan went and then the other thing,
- 10:18Speaker 5: and we brought this up yesterday, Jake. With Michigan's victory,
- 10:25Speaker 5: the Big Ten Conference has now won the football National Championship,
- 10:28Speaker 5: the men's basketball National Championship, the women's basketball National Championship
- 10:34Speaker 5: with the victory by the UCLA women in the national
- 10:40Speaker 5: title game, and right now they got the number one
- 10:44Speaker 5: ranked baseball team in the country. A lot of people
- 10:46Speaker 5: will think about UCLA as much because they haven't been
- 10:49Speaker 5: in the Big Ten that long, but they're making their mark.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I think I also saw they want a water polo
- 10:55Speaker 5: championship for the men UCLA. The Big Ten is striking
- 10:59Speaker 5: all the boards right now. And even though the SEC
- 11:03Speaker 5: has a larger collection of teams higher rank in most
- 11:09Speaker 5: of those major sports throughout the course of the year,
- 11:12Speaker 5: when the smoke is cleared, lately, it's belonged to the
- 11:16Speaker 5: Big Ten.
- 11:17Speaker 6: And on the basketball side of things, we've seen a
- 11:19Speaker 6: couple of reasons for that. Number one has been the
- 11:22Speaker 6: Big Ten's ability to get ahead of the curve on
- 11:25Speaker 6: targeting top European talent, whether it was from the junior
- 11:29Speaker 6: ranks or from the professional ranks, to come over and
- 11:31Speaker 6: have success here at the college level. Some of that
- 11:34Speaker 6: has to do with how deep your pockets are for NIL.
- 11:37Speaker 6: But Craig, you and I both know there are programs
- 11:39Speaker 6: in the SEC with more expensive rosters than what Michigan
- 11:42Speaker 6: put together this season. So it's going to be about
- 11:45Speaker 6: finding the right approach and right now, Dusty May and
- 11:47Speaker 6: Michigan certainly ahead of the game when it comes to
- 11:49Speaker 6: their player evaluating and what their process was in the
- 11:52Speaker 6: transfer portal to bring this roster together.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know.
- 11:59Speaker 5: I've heard obviously, I've heard Dusty May say this and
- 12:03Speaker 5: it really did bear out for them. But I will
- 12:05Speaker 5: say this too, it also happened for a lot of
- 12:11Speaker 5: other teams or didn't happen for another teams. And what
- 12:14Speaker 5: I'm talking about is his commentary and you kind of
- 12:17Speaker 5: alluded to it there that it comes down to the
- 12:21Speaker 5: chemistry and the makeup of those teams. It's one thing
- 12:25Speaker 5: to just load up in the portal and say, Okay,
- 12:29Speaker 5: I put myself together a team. It's one thing to
- 12:31Speaker 5: do that it's another thing to be able to get
- 12:35Speaker 5: those pieces.
- 12:37Speaker 4: To all congeal, to all work together.
- 12:40Speaker 5: And you know, most of the teams, let me put
- 12:44Speaker 5: it to you that way, most of the teams who
- 12:46Speaker 5: did that struggled and in some cases a lot of
- 12:51Speaker 5: cases weren't able ever to get it completely together. And
- 12:58Speaker 5: so I think that what Michigan did is an example
- 13:03Speaker 5: of how you can make it work in this modern
- 13:06Speaker 5: age of the portal two.
- 13:10Speaker 4: You know, to make it work for.
- 13:11Speaker 5: You that to to to be a national contender and
- 13:16Speaker 5: and to have the team really be able to gel
- 13:20Speaker 5: because that's the biggest thing, and can you get them to, uh,
- 13:27Speaker 5: you know, perform at the level that you're anticipating or
- 13:31Speaker 5: hoping for or envisioning when you bring these guys in.
- 13:37Speaker 5: But by the same token, they've got to be guys
- 13:41Speaker 5: who can do it.
- 13:42Speaker 4: They've got to be guys who can work together.
- 13:45Speaker 5: And you saw when they talked about how much they
- 13:47Speaker 5: love elect Lindenborg when he was struggling and how they
- 13:51Speaker 5: wanted to step up for him. Elliott Cadou comes in
- 13:53Speaker 5: from North Carolina and he was the most outstanding player
- 13:56Speaker 5: of the tournament. He talked about his teammates. They all
- 13:58Speaker 5: talked about that, and winning teams do that. I get that,
- 14:01Speaker 5: but it's not the easiest thing in the Worldhake to
- 14:03Speaker 5: be able to just bring in a collection of talent
- 14:07Speaker 5: through the portal and expect to flip a switch and
- 14:11Speaker 5: they all work together and they're all productive.
- 14:13Speaker 6: It's not just the skill set fit to buy into
- 14:15Speaker 6: a particular role. It's a personality fit. Not too dissimilar
- 14:19Speaker 6: from what Dan Hurley does at Connecticut, where the challenge
- 14:22Speaker 6: for him is finding guys that can play for him,
- 14:25Speaker 6: meaning how difficult he.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Is to play for.
- 14:28Speaker 6: For Michigan, it was about finding guys to fill the
- 14:31Speaker 6: right particular roles. When Elliott Cadot came in and Trey
- 14:35Speaker 6: Donaldson transferred out of Michigan, I'm thinking, what the heck
- 14:38Speaker 6: is going on here? Trey Donaldson is, for my eyes,
- 14:42Speaker 6: a better point guard. Elliott Cadot I thought regressed in
- 14:44Speaker 6: his sophomore year at North Carolina, But boy was I
- 14:47Speaker 6: proven wrong because Dusky made was able to put him
- 14:50Speaker 6: in the right position two succeed surrounding him with those
- 14:53Speaker 6: talented forwards and with those scores that allowed him to
- 14:56Speaker 6: kind of be the straw that stirred the drink. I
- 14:58Speaker 6: hadn't been more wrong about a transfer than I was
- 15:01Speaker 6: in a long time about Elliot Cadell.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Well, you can probably join the party with a lot
- 15:05Speaker 5: of people because there are a lot of people that
- 15:07Speaker 5: envisioned the same thing that just didn't expect that much.
- 15:10Speaker 5: They thought Cadeaux was kind of a throw in, and
- 15:12Speaker 5: that's because of the chemistry of what was going on
- 15:15Speaker 5: at North Carolina. And this is not to take a
- 15:19Speaker 5: shot at North Carolina, obviously, is just to point out
- 15:21Speaker 5: that his role, he did not flourish in his role
- 15:26Speaker 5: at North Carolina in the way that he did at Michigan. Now,
- 15:29Speaker 5: I don't know that you put that all on Hubert Davis.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I don't know that you put that any of that
- 15:34Speaker 5: on Cadeau or the team.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Maybe it's a.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Little bit of a lot of things, but we've seen
- 15:40Speaker 5: it many, many times where teams make a difference with
- 15:45Speaker 5: one piece that it did not work out at another place.
- 15:49Speaker 5: I think about, you know, even with the long worn
- 15:51Speaker 5: football team, with as much as they have going on
- 15:55Speaker 5: and as many people as they have to bring in.
- 15:58Speaker 5: I think of a guy like Trey Moore and what
- 16:00Speaker 5: he did coming in from UTSA, what a major difference
- 16:05Speaker 5: he did.
- 16:06Speaker 4: You know, there's there's you know.
- 16:08Speaker 5: So many guys that that made a difference through the
- 16:12Speaker 5: portal coming in.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Matthew Golden another one.
- 16:16Speaker 5: And that's just in football, and it's happened in other sports.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Tremont Mark with men's basketball. Remember he'd been at two
- 16:22Speaker 5: schools prior to the Houston thing. He was red shirting
- 16:25Speaker 5: one to do it, but that he had played at
- 16:26Speaker 5: Arkansas and then stepped up and had a solid fifth year,
- 16:34Speaker 5: six year senior season and then and then really came
- 16:38Speaker 5: to life in the NCAA Tournament in propelling the Longhorns
- 16:41Speaker 5: into the sweet sixteenth.
- 16:42Speaker 4: So it's a lesson.
- 16:44Speaker 5: It's a lesson that done right, executed properly, if the
- 16:50Speaker 5: fit is correct, that it can make a huge difference.
- 16:53Speaker 5: And that's one of the biggest, if not the biggest
- 16:55Speaker 5: change on the college athletic landscape, maybe even more so
- 16:59Speaker 5: than in IL right now. It's a little more difficult
- 17:01Speaker 5: to see that with n IL, you know, with with
- 17:05Speaker 5: you know, with the fruits of those labors, but you
- 17:08Speaker 5: you see an almost instant our ROI, the return on
- 17:13Speaker 5: investment for a lot of the guys who come in
- 17:15Speaker 5: through the portal and the difference they make.
- 17:18Speaker 4: All right.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Coming up today, more on the college basketball scene. You
- 17:23Speaker 5: probably won't be shocked to learn who the favorites are
- 17:28Speaker 5: on the way too early picked for next.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Year, but we're gonna go down it anyway. We'll do that.
- 17:33Speaker 5: College baseball. Coming up in the four o'clock hour, Keith Morland,
- 17:37Speaker 5: who will be working the broadcast with me tonight. We'll
- 17:42Speaker 5: get some thoughts from him on this long worn baseball
- 17:45Speaker 5: team coming off of its series win at South Carolina
- 17:49Speaker 5: when they had to tough it out, dropped the opener
- 17:52Speaker 5: to a team that had only won one conference game,
- 17:54Speaker 5: and they got blown out on Friday night, and they
- 17:56Speaker 5: come back on Thursday night, and they come back on
- 17:59Speaker 5: Friday and Saturday and play two really good games, pitched
- 18:03Speaker 5: really well, got enough run support. They're still looking for more,
- 18:06Speaker 5: but they did that, got the win to pick up
- 18:09Speaker 5: whin number twenty six and thirty one tries, and they
- 18:12Speaker 5: host UIW tonight. But Keith will join me in the
- 18:15Speaker 5: four o'clock hour to talk about the long worn baseball
- 18:18Speaker 5: team and the SEC overall and the national scene.
- 18:22Speaker 4: We'll do that.
- 18:22Speaker 5: We do have Inconceivable coming up as well, so a
- 18:25Speaker 5: lot to get to here from UFCU, Dish fagg Field
- 18:29Speaker 5: here on a Tuesday afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 18:32Speaker 5: under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Here on a Texan Tuesday.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Where our producer Jay Kerman returns us from our commercial
- 18:57Speaker 5: breaks with the douns of iconic Texas musicians. In the
- 19:04Speaker 5: four o'clock hour, we hear not limited to, but inclusive
- 19:08Speaker 5: of the King George Strait. In the three o'clock hour,
- 19:10Speaker 5: the iconic Willie Nelson still were performing by the way
- 19:13Speaker 5: in his early nineties, and in the two o'clock hour,
- 19:16Speaker 5: the immortal Stevie Rayvaughn right in that crossfire right, Jay Carmon, yep.
- 19:23Speaker 6: And this one comes from right in our city, Austin, Texas,
- 19:27Speaker 6: performed at acl tapings.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Excellent, excellent.
- 19:32Speaker 5: It's funny I think about iconic people as we sit here,
- 19:36Speaker 5: and this is, you know, in the neighborhood of four
- 19:42Speaker 5: hours before we have the first pitch. So the ballpark's
- 19:45Speaker 5: still a little bit quiet right now, but I'm watching
- 19:47Speaker 5: a lone solitary figure do laps, or he was jogging,
- 19:54Speaker 5: he's walking now, but he's doing laps around the ballpark.
- 19:58Speaker 5: None other than speaking of iconic guy, Longhorn's assistant coach
- 20:02Speaker 5: Troy to Lwitzky, Hey.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Tulo out there just haking it.
- 20:07Speaker 5: He waved from the field, looked up at me, and
- 20:09Speaker 5: came away, like, what are you doing here?
- 20:10Speaker 4: So early?
- 20:12Speaker 5: Tula is a great guy, and he works and worked
- 20:14Speaker 5: so hard with with the players, and they just gravitate.
- 20:17Speaker 5: I saw it the first year when David Pierce brought
- 20:22Speaker 5: him on, the first year that he came out. I
- 20:26Speaker 5: just saw that the players would just automatically just flock
- 20:31Speaker 5: to him for advice and and just stories and instruction
- 20:35Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff. But he works with
- 20:37Speaker 5: and when we hear a lot of the players in
- 20:42Speaker 5: our postgame interviews, many of those players will say things like, well, yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 5: we're been working really hard with Tulow. We heard Anthony
- 20:54Speaker 5: pa say it the other day, and heard some of
- 20:57Speaker 5: the other guys, Jamee de Plantier, We've heard several of
- 20:59Speaker 5: the guys say working really hard with Tulo to do
- 21:05Speaker 5: the things I need to do and to get better
- 21:06Speaker 5: in the field and stuff like that and at the
- 21:08Speaker 5: plate and more discipline and stuff like that, and uh,
- 21:12Speaker 5: and Tula is a guy that, uh, you know, even
- 21:15Speaker 5: as a player. He did this when he was playing
- 21:17Speaker 5: with the Rockies all those years, and the Yankees, uh
- 21:20Speaker 5: and the Blue Jays.
- 21:21Speaker 4: He just he shunned the spotlight.
- 21:25Speaker 5: I mean, there were times when he it was compulsory
- 21:28Speaker 5: that he had to do some interviews, obviously with the
- 21:31Speaker 5: career that he had, but he was he wasn't he
- 21:34Speaker 5: wasn't into it, and and he did what he had
- 21:37Speaker 5: to do and that was about it. And when he
- 21:38Speaker 5: became a coach, first on David Pierce's staff and now
- 21:42Speaker 5: on Jim Slastangle's staff, that he still kind of takes
- 21:46Speaker 5: that approach. He said, this is about the players, is
- 21:48Speaker 5: not not about me. Even though you know, people have
- 21:51Speaker 5: wanted to do big profiles on him doing all this
- 21:53Speaker 5: kind of stuff, he just kind of stayed with. I
- 21:55Speaker 5: think I've had Jake in since he's been on staff
- 22:00Speaker 5: one year he was out, so six years, five years,
- 22:06Speaker 5: I guess it would be. I think I've had two
- 22:10Speaker 5: interviews with him too, because and that's the way he
- 22:13Speaker 5: wants it and and and is his friendly as today
- 22:16Speaker 5: is long, and he'll he'll sit down and visit with
- 22:19Speaker 5: you and talk with you and all that kind of stuff.
- 22:21Speaker 5: He's not interested in the whole interview thing and and
- 22:24Speaker 5: the stuff that goes out there. You know, when we
- 22:26Speaker 5: were joking yesterday about the term influencer, too low would
- 22:32Speaker 5: shun that as well.
- 22:33Speaker 4: He does not, even though he.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Does influence in an incredibly productive and positive way on
- 22:40Speaker 5: this long worn baseball team. But don't don't call him
- 22:44Speaker 5: an influencer because.
- 22:45Speaker 4: He would not. He would not be up to that.
- 22:47Speaker 5: He would not be into that, just knowing how he is,
- 22:51Speaker 5: that that would not be his thing.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Well, he can, he can influence your swing though in
- 22:55Speaker 6: your season. I mean the subtle adjustments that that he's made.
- 22:58Speaker 6: Players aren't just mentioning that by accident. When when you
- 23:01Speaker 6: hear that, many guys talk about the impacts and the
- 23:04Speaker 6: small tweaks that that he's made, It really does kind
- 23:07Speaker 6: of speak for itself.
- 23:08Speaker 5: No, I agree, I completely agree with you on that.
- 23:12Speaker 5: And he does it in the field as well. He's
- 23:15Speaker 5: made guys much better fielders. Just to watch him work
- 23:19Speaker 5: is pretty impressive. Remember how I was talking about how
- 23:22Speaker 5: impressed I was watching Sean Miller coach the basketball team
- 23:28Speaker 5: and teach the game. Uh, you know, being at practice
- 23:32Speaker 5: and watching his his hands on approach. Yes, the assistants
- 23:37Speaker 5: are very very much involved, uh with that, Adam Cohen
- 23:40Speaker 5: and and you know, all the rest of the assistant
- 23:44Speaker 5: coaches your Malaghi, you know uh uh all of all
- 23:49Speaker 5: of the rest of the assistant coaching staff uh at
- 23:53Speaker 5: Ryan Anderson, Ken, you Hunter, the entirety of the staff
- 23:58Speaker 5: all have theirs in on it and the instruction. But
- 24:02Speaker 5: to watch Sean work with them on the floor is
- 24:06Speaker 5: pretty impressive. Vic does the same thing with the women's
- 24:10Speaker 5: basketball team. Vick Shaffer does. And even though Blair is
- 24:14Speaker 5: centrally involved in Elena Lovado, the associate head coach is
- 24:17Speaker 5: centrally involved, and Lindsay Wisdom, Hilton Whiz is centrally involved,
- 24:22Speaker 5: Mason Wright assistant coach on the staff. They're all involved.
- 24:26Speaker 5: But you know, you see Vic right in the middle
- 24:29Speaker 5: of it. You see Sean Miller right in the middle
- 24:33Speaker 5: of it. It's it's kind of like that old high
- 24:36Speaker 5: school football coaching adage when the coach gives the speech
- 24:40Speaker 5: to the team and he talks about are you involved
- 24:44Speaker 5: or are you committed? Because you know, being involved, are
- 24:48Speaker 5: being committed is like ham and eggs. You see the
- 24:52Speaker 5: chickens involved, but the pig is committed. So you know,
- 24:58Speaker 5: these people are committed, no doubt about it. The same
- 25:02Speaker 5: thing with Mike White and his staff for Long Worn
- 25:04Speaker 5: Softball and and it's what's one of the great things
- 25:06Speaker 5: about the Texas coaching staff is that it's it's a
- 25:09Speaker 5: great collection of coaches. Vic Shaffer was telling this story
- 25:15Speaker 5: at the press conference last Thursday about he was telling
- 25:22Speaker 5: the story about when he first arrived on campus, and
- 25:26Speaker 5: it was it was an odd time when Vic first
- 25:29Speaker 5: got here because it was in the middle of the pandemic,
- 25:32Speaker 5: so he couldn't meet with his players face to face.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Everything was done by zoom. Our first meeting was by zoom.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Everything he'd done, you know, was by was by zoom.
- 25:44Speaker 5: He had all these meetings. He couldn't have the team
- 25:46Speaker 5: over to his house for for barbecue or whatever, uh,
- 25:49Speaker 5: those kinds of things. And he he continued to talk about, uh,
- 25:56Speaker 5: you know, the the commitment that they all had to have.
- 26:00Speaker 5: But he said, when I went into my first coaches
- 26:02Speaker 5: meeting out of the pandemic, when they all got together afterwards,
- 26:06Speaker 5: I sat in a room and he said, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 5: I get into this room and with all the assistant
- 26:15Speaker 5: coaches and with Crystal Confee, the athletic director, and he
- 26:21Speaker 5: said that after his first season when they ended up
- 26:26Speaker 5: going to the Elite eight, and they had a great
- 26:29Speaker 5: cinerella ride getting to the Elite eight when they lost
- 26:32Speaker 5: to eventual national champion South Carolina and that was down
- 26:35Speaker 5: in the Alamo dum So. Then they go to their
- 26:37Speaker 5: first real coaching retreat and he all get together. He
- 26:41Speaker 5: goes and I'm in this meeting and I'm looking around,
- 26:45Speaker 5: and he said, there were six coaches in that room
- 26:48Speaker 5: who had at the very least played for a national championship,
- 26:56Speaker 5: and in the case of I think three of them,
- 26:58Speaker 5: three of them had won national titles. You talk about
- 27:00Speaker 5: swimming and diving and track and field and things like that.
- 27:04Speaker 5: He goes, here, I am an Elite eight and I'm
- 27:05Speaker 5: not even in the category with him yet.
- 27:08Speaker 3: So taxes problems.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Yeah, well, he said, it lets you know where you stand,
- 27:13Speaker 5: and it also lets you know what's expected of you,
- 27:17Speaker 5: so you know. With that in mind, he went to
- 27:19Speaker 5: work and they had an Elite eight year the next
- 27:22Speaker 5: season in twenty two. Then after they went out in
- 27:24Speaker 5: the second round in twenty twenty three. That second round
- 27:28Speaker 5: of the NCAA tournament is is the shortest run the
- 27:32Speaker 5: Texas women have had under Vic Schaeffer. It went Elite eight,
- 27:36Speaker 5: Elite eight, second round exit, Elite eight, Elite eight Final four,
- 27:42Speaker 5: Final four. So he's he's he's made his mark, even
- 27:47Speaker 5: though it ended in disappointment the other the other night
- 27:51Speaker 5: in the loss to UCLA. But get a feeling even
- 27:53Speaker 5: though we saw some of the portal moves yesterday with
- 27:57Speaker 5: Justice Carlton electing to enter the portal. Also Aliah Crump
- 28:04Speaker 5: and some folks may have forgotten about Alah Moore. Amo
- 28:07Speaker 5: had played for four years for Texas, but she had
- 28:10Speaker 5: been plagued by knee problems, which he was healthy. Aliah
- 28:14Speaker 5: was could be very effective at times, but she took
- 28:17Speaker 5: all of last year off, this past season off to
- 28:21Speaker 5: have knee surgery to trying to come back. And she
- 28:24Speaker 5: has entered the portal as well, so that you know,
- 28:27Speaker 5: we'll see how it happens in the portal's open for
- 28:29Speaker 5: the man now, so we're going to see what happens
- 28:30Speaker 5: there all right. Up next Inconceivable here on a Tuesday
- 28:34Speaker 5: afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in
- 28:36Speaker 5: the IR Radio app.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Second hour of the.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hunder the Zone
- 28:43Speaker 5: Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carman, we bring you
- 28:46Speaker 5: the program from ufc U Dish Fakfield.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I got thinking about something, Jake.
- 28:52Speaker 5: This of course has been arguably I'll just say that
- 28:58Speaker 5: way perspectively, the we've just completed in that month of March,
- 29:04Speaker 5: not only March Madness, but and going into the first
- 29:08Speaker 5: weekend in April, the busiest month of.
- 29:13Speaker 4: My professional broadcast career.
- 29:15Speaker 5: How about that, which is in excess of forty years now,
- 29:18Speaker 5: So starting back in the mid eighties when I was
- 29:21Speaker 5: working at KRLD in Dallas, the games, the travel, everything
- 29:28Speaker 5: that went on.
- 29:29Speaker 4: You know, it was just it was just at times.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Maniacal how crazy busy the month was, but kind of
- 29:34Speaker 5: knew it. And that's also a tip of the cap
- 29:37Speaker 5: to Texas men's and women's basketball for the great NCAA
- 29:40Speaker 5: tournament runs that they had. The men reaching the sweet
- 29:44Speaker 5: sixteen when it looked like they were just going to
- 29:47Speaker 5: have to be content with being fortunate to having even
- 29:50Speaker 5: landing a spot in the NCAA Tournament, having to go
- 29:53Speaker 5: to Dayton, Ohio in the first four, but winning that
- 29:56Speaker 5: game over NC State on the tremad Mark jumper with
- 29:59Speaker 5: one point want to go. Then after the overnight flight
- 30:02Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff and the lack of
- 30:05Speaker 5: sleep and getting ready there in Portland, they beat the
- 30:07Speaker 5: six seed byu and then beat the number three seed
- 30:12Speaker 5: Gonzaga to get to the sweet sixteen. And it was
- 30:14Speaker 5: the first week sixteen in three years and a great
- 30:17Speaker 5: end of season run for Sean Miller's crew.
- 30:20Speaker 4: So you have that. Then you had the.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Texas women, who of course has a number one seed,
- 30:30Speaker 5: were favored, expected to be able to perform, and that
- 30:34Speaker 5: they did. They blew out Missouri stayed at home in
- 30:38Speaker 5: the first round of the incident. This was coming off
- 30:40Speaker 5: winning the SEC Tournament, beating South Carolina in the championship game,
- 30:45Speaker 5: taking two or three from the game Cocks, who ultimately
- 30:47Speaker 5: would wind up playing in the NCAA Women's National Championship Game,
- 30:52Speaker 5: and coming off that SEC Tournament title. Texas then proceeded
- 30:58Speaker 5: to dismantled Missouri State in the first round of the tournament,
- 31:03Speaker 5: Oregon in the second round of the tournament, both those
- 31:06Speaker 5: games at Moody Center, then going up the Fort Worth
- 31:09Speaker 5: and the Fort Worth Regional, blowing out Kentucky in the
- 31:13Speaker 5: Sweet sixteen and easily handling Michigan in the Elite Eight
- 31:19Speaker 5: to get back to their second consecutive Final four. It
- 31:22Speaker 5: ended there in the disappointing loss to the eventual national champion, UCLA.
- 31:27Speaker 5: And I said, there might be some folks who take
- 31:29Speaker 5: a little bit of solace in that, saying, well, it
- 31:31Speaker 5: was the best team in the country. But you know,
- 31:34Speaker 5: Vic Shaffer said yesterday, well we aired the comments, yester.
- 31:37Speaker 5: He said after the game that they felt like the
- 31:41Speaker 5: team in the locker room felt like they let one
- 31:45Speaker 5: get away, that they could have won that game, and
- 31:46Speaker 5: who knows, then gone on maybe and beaten South Carolina
- 31:49Speaker 5: to win the national title. But in any event, it
- 31:54Speaker 5: was still a great run. Thirty five and four for
- 31:56Speaker 5: the second consecutive year, reaching the Final four for the
- 31:59Speaker 5: second executive year. So those are good memories and things
- 32:02Speaker 5: to build on. And it'll it'll seem more of an
- 32:06Speaker 5: accomplishment when they, you know, when they get a little
- 32:10Speaker 5: bit closer or further away from this year's season, a
- 32:14Speaker 5: little bit closer the next year's season. Already, three student
- 32:21Speaker 5: athletes in VIX program have entered a transfer portal, one
- 32:26Speaker 5: of those being a Leah Crump, who had the Battle
- 32:28Speaker 5: of the Foot injury in this just completed season. She
- 32:31Speaker 5: was a starter early in the year, looked really good,
- 32:33Speaker 5: and then after the foot injury, just never quite got
- 32:36Speaker 5: back into quite the rhythm in the total element of
- 32:40Speaker 5: a player that she was prior to the injury.
- 32:43Speaker 4: So she leaves.
- 32:45Speaker 5: And then the thing with Justice Carleton we're hearing is
- 32:51Speaker 5: more about perhaps wanting to play close to home and
- 32:55Speaker 5: family and the things of that nature. We'll see how
- 32:57Speaker 5: that turns out. And then Aliah Moore, who did not
- 33:01Speaker 5: play this season. She had off season knee surgery a
- 33:04Speaker 5: year ago and had been in the program for four years,
- 33:08Speaker 5: but is going to transfer somewhere else to play or
- 33:11Speaker 5: has entered the portal anyway.
- 33:13Speaker 4: So anyway, those two things have happened.
- 33:16Speaker 5: But on the national stage, as a pointed out, Michigan
- 33:22Speaker 5: wins the men's national championship and UCLA takes the women's
- 33:28Speaker 5: national title. And it was interesting, there's a story that
- 33:33Speaker 5: Jeff Borcello put together for ESPN, and he said it
- 33:38Speaker 5: goes all the way back to November. So many things
- 33:41Speaker 5: go back to November. You know, we were talking about
- 33:43Speaker 5: Texas having beaten UCLA and handed UCLA it's only loss
- 33:47Speaker 5: of the season that was in the Players Era Championship
- 33:49Speaker 5: on the women's side in November. But then Michigan took
- 33:56Speaker 5: the floor in that men's tournament and they're playing really
- 33:59Speaker 5: good Gonzaga team, and Elliott Caddo at that time said,
- 34:02Speaker 5: we're the best team ever assembled, and he was talking
- 34:04Speaker 5: about how the team had been put together. They went
- 34:06Speaker 5: on and they won by forty points, and they were
- 34:12Speaker 5: in many respects, the most dominant team in the country.
- 34:15Speaker 5: Although Duke in Arizona went in ahead of Michigan as
- 34:20Speaker 5: higher number one seeds, which is interesting you think about it.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Michigan was the third number one seed. UCLA was the
- 34:30Speaker 5: second number one seed among the men as it turned out,
- 34:36Speaker 5: and they went on they were actually they were the
- 34:38Speaker 5: third number one seed.
- 34:39Speaker 4: So they went in and won.
- 34:40Speaker 5: They won the first national championship since nineteen eighty nine.
- 34:44Speaker 5: They became the first team. Now think about this, they
- 34:48Speaker 5: became the first team to beat Yukon at the Sweet
- 34:52Speaker 5: sixteen or later portion of the tournament. In other words,
- 34:57Speaker 5: Sweet sixteen, Elite eight, Final four, or National championship game.
- 35:01Speaker 5: They became the first team to beat Yukon at the
- 35:04Speaker 5: Sweet sixteen or later since Michigan State did it in
- 35:07Speaker 5: the two thousand and nine Final four. So they've done
- 35:12Speaker 5: all of that and now they've won their second national title.
- 35:18Speaker 4: So what does that.
- 35:18Speaker 5: Mean for the coming twenty six twenty seven season. They're
- 35:26Speaker 5: not the favorite, but they're the second favorite. Duke once
- 35:31Speaker 5: more has emerged as the favorite to win the NCAA tournament.
- 35:36Speaker 5: For those of you like to follow the wagering side
- 35:39Speaker 5: of it, of course, Jake and I, we always say
- 35:42Speaker 5: just the FEPO line for entertainment purposes only, right.
- 35:45Speaker 6: That's the name of our sports book. Foss Well. Duke
- 35:53Speaker 6: is at a plus eight hundred on the board at
- 35:59Speaker 6: the odds of that. So that means, what if you
- 36:01Speaker 6: put a dollar down on Duke to win the national
- 36:05Speaker 6: time and they win, you win eight hundred bucks.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Is that how that worked?
- 36:07Speaker 2: No?
- 36:08Speaker 6: No, you need you need to put one hundred dollars
- 36:09Speaker 6: down to win eight eight hundred.
- 36:11Speaker 5: That's it, all right, You put one hundred down, you
- 36:12Speaker 5: win eight hundred, Okay. Michigan is second on the board
- 36:17Speaker 5: at twelve to one. That's according to DraftKings for those
- 36:20Speaker 5: who follow those things. Florida a one seed this year,
- 36:24Speaker 5: Arizona a one seed this year. They're at fourteen to
- 36:27Speaker 5: one and fifteen to one, and they were the Wolverines were.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Even as.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Recent as this passed Sunday, Michigan was sixteen to one
- 36:43Speaker 5: for next season, but the win obviously helped, and Duke
- 36:48Speaker 5: also improved slightly from ten to one to the current
- 36:51Speaker 5: number over that time period. Also, Arkansas is eighteen to one.
- 36:59Speaker 5: By you at thirty to one, you said, what about Yukon,
- 37:05Speaker 5: They're twenty to one on the board for next year,
- 37:09Speaker 5: So that those were the those are the odds that
- 37:13Speaker 5: are coming down.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Where's Illinois on there, Craig, let.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Me see if I if they list eighteen to one
- 37:21Speaker 5: came as Arkansas and Houston eighteen to one, Kansas, Michigan
- 37:27Speaker 5: state both sixteen to one. So there's the uh, the
- 37:33Speaker 5: the betting odds and the landscape there for that.
- 37:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I just mentioned Illinois because they've got they've had
- 37:39Speaker 6: a lot coming back.
- 37:41Speaker 4: They do, they absolutely do, so you know there'll be, uh.
- 37:48Speaker 5: That's going to be a lot of fun to watch
- 37:51Speaker 5: to see how they progress. And also, as as we
- 37:58Speaker 5: pointed out, Jake, what happened with the portal? You know,
- 38:01Speaker 5: does Brad Underwood add more pieces coming in to Illinois?
- 38:07Speaker 5: I know a lot of folks are interested to see
- 38:09Speaker 5: what Sean Miller does with Texas. You know, he's definitely
- 38:13Speaker 5: in the market for a point guard, and they'll continue
- 38:19Speaker 5: that search. I think, I think, I know a lot
- 38:23Speaker 5: of folks have asked the question about will he get
- 38:27Speaker 5: the material resources and support that he needs to build
- 38:32Speaker 5: a program, And everything I've been told is that he will.
- 38:36Speaker 5: So we'll see how it is going forward for the
- 38:39Speaker 5: Long Worn men's basketball program and for the women. Like
- 38:42Speaker 5: I said, they three have entered the portal. Doesn't mean
- 38:45Speaker 5: they'll be the only ones, but it also doesn't mean
- 38:48Speaker 5: that Vic won't be bringing pieces him because I'm sure
- 38:50Speaker 5: he will on that. In addition to the three McDonald's
- 38:55Speaker 5: all Americans, he has coming in in the signing class,
- 38:57Speaker 5: the number one signing class in the country, and to
- 39:00Speaker 5: keep that in mind, Sean Miller also has three big
- 39:03Speaker 5: names coming in, including Austin Gooseby, the younger brother of
- 39:07Speaker 5: the Long Horns offensive lineman Trevor Gooseby. So we'll keep
- 39:12Speaker 5: an eye on all of that. Long Horn football continues
- 39:15Speaker 5: to go through its spring practice.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Yesterday.
- 39:18Speaker 5: We told you when the university announced it that there
- 39:21Speaker 5: will be a fan day coming up on Saturday, the eighteenth,
- 39:27Speaker 5: and it'll be an opportunity for fans to get autographs.
- 39:31Speaker 5: It'll be posters that the players would autograph for you.
- 39:34Speaker 5: They'll be on field photo opportunities with Steve Sarkishan and
- 39:40Speaker 5: in addition to Sark, I think Texas Cheer and Band
- 39:45Speaker 5: or Texas Cheer in Texas Pom will be out there
- 39:47Speaker 5: as well for that for photo opportunities. And there will
- 39:51Speaker 5: be an open practice, be a scrimmage. Of course they
- 39:56Speaker 5: didn't have a scrimmage at all last year, but it
- 40:00Speaker 5: it will be an open practice, the final open practice
- 40:05Speaker 5: of the spring drills that are going on, so the
- 40:10Speaker 5: twenty nine practices that they're allowed to have during that
- 40:13Speaker 5: time that this will be the last one of that,
- 40:15Speaker 5: and that's coming up on Saturday, and the gates open,
- 40:18Speaker 5: I believe as early as nine thirty in the morning.
- 40:20Speaker 5: They have the fire sale as they call it at
- 40:24Speaker 5: the shop and a chance for you to pick up
- 40:32Speaker 5: long one gear. We'll visit with Tree Martin about this
- 40:35Speaker 5: and more detail. We always do this every year, and
- 40:37Speaker 5: we'll visit with him in a little more detail about
- 40:42Speaker 5: what's to come for the totality of the fanfare and
- 40:47Speaker 5: everything that they can enjoy on that fan day.
- 40:50Speaker 4: But again it's.
- 40:50Speaker 5: Saturday the eighteenth, and as I mentioned, you can do
- 40:53Speaker 5: that all the way. The final spring practice will start
- 41:00Speaker 5: at eleven the morning inside the stadium, and they want
- 41:02Speaker 5: everybody to sit on the east side of the stadium
- 41:05Speaker 5: because there's construction going on behind the west side, not
- 41:09Speaker 5: only on the main stadium portion, but also you've probably
- 41:14Speaker 5: noticed it if you've been over there. The brand new
- 41:16Speaker 5: football practice facility continues to go up in is under construction,
- 41:20Speaker 5: so that whole west side they're keeping shut down and
- 41:23Speaker 5: they want people to be over on the east side.
- 41:25Speaker 5: I think it's between sections twelve and thirty two.
- 41:28Speaker 4: First come, first serve.
- 41:30Speaker 5: It's all free, and we'll have more details on that
- 41:33Speaker 5: as we get a little closer to it, which is
- 41:34Speaker 5: week after next this weekend for Long Horn Baseball, they'll
- 41:39Speaker 5: be in College Station and take on Texas A and M.
- 41:41Speaker 5: We'll have more on that coming up. We're going to
- 41:43Speaker 5: visit with Keep Moreland next hour, who will call tonight's
- 41:46Speaker 5: game with me here between Texas and Incarnate Word, and
- 41:49Speaker 5: that game can be heard on our sister station one
- 41:52Speaker 5: O three point one FM. Austin's eight station as well
- 41:55Speaker 5: as on the iHeartRadio app and also on the Texas
- 41:58Speaker 5: Longhorns app. So we'll have the game for you tonight,
- 42:02Speaker 5: but we'll talk more in depth about the Long Worn
- 42:05Speaker 5: baseball team and additionally about the upcoming conference series with
- 42:11Speaker 5: Texas A and M, which is on the road, and
- 42:13Speaker 5: then they'll be back at home to play a suddenly
- 42:15Speaker 5: hot Alabama team that is eight and four in the league,
- 42:17Speaker 5: that one game back of Texas for second place in
- 42:20Speaker 5: the league. The Long wrne is one game out of first.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Georgia is ten and two in the league, and Texas
- 42:25Speaker 5: is nine and three in Alabama's at eight and four
- 42:28Speaker 5: in conference play. Alabama will be here weekend after next
- 42:31Speaker 5: and that is the weekend that also includes the fan
- 42:35Speaker 5: day fest going on across the freeway. They're at derri
- 42:40Speaker 5: Kay Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. All right, coming up, we've
- 42:44Speaker 5: got some other topics to get to, some NFL draft topics,
- 42:47Speaker 5: and when we continue here from UFCHU, Dish font Field
- 42:50Speaker 5: and Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio.
- 42:52Speaker 4: M memory Blue Wise Crime.
- 43:17Speaker 5: In the Ring. This is one of the Willie Nelson classics.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Blue eyes crying in the rain. This so it's a
- 43:25Speaker 5: live recording, this particular one, right, Jake.
- 43:27Speaker 6: Yep still at Austin City Limits from nineteen seventy six.
- 43:30Speaker 4: That's great.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Well, you know ACL recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary, and.
- 43:36Speaker 4: Hats off to them. They've had some of the greatest
- 43:37Speaker 4: acts of all time.
- 43:38Speaker 5: Love going over to the ACL Moody Theater to watch
- 43:43Speaker 5: performers there as well, say, absolutely fabulous music venue. A
- 43:50Speaker 5: lot of folks are expecting a fabulous NFL draft coming up,
- 43:55Speaker 5: and yesterday we went down what the Athletic had listed
- 44:03Speaker 5: as the top one hundred NFL prospects. It would pretty
- 44:08Speaker 5: much take you through three rounds of the draft, so
- 44:10Speaker 5: the top one hundred, and they had him rated from
- 44:17Speaker 5: one hundred all the way down the one. I think
- 44:19Speaker 5: the highest ranked log one was Anthony Hill, who might
- 44:22Speaker 5: have been what was it nineteenth, I think or No.
- 44:25Speaker 6: Twenty forty ninth I thought may be right, but I
- 44:30Speaker 6: thought was a little lower than some other outlets had him.
- 44:32Speaker 4: Yeah, well, let's compare.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Peter Schrager has done one and I'm still trying to
- 44:39Speaker 5: figure out Peter Schrager's deal.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Help him in what sense. Well, he's.
- 44:46Speaker 5: You know, we say, we got so used to watching
- 44:48Speaker 5: him on NFL network, And isn't he still on NFL network.
- 44:54Speaker 3: No, I think he's with ESPN now.
- 44:55Speaker 5: I know he's on contributor, right, I know he's I
- 44:59Speaker 5: know he's on ESPN regular. He's a regular contributor. Like
- 45:04Speaker 5: he said, he's on Get Up and he does that.
- 45:05Speaker 5: But I thought I saw him pretty recent. Maybe I'm
- 45:08Speaker 5: just thinking that Kyle Brant, but I was thinking that
- 45:10Speaker 5: Peter Schager had also been on them.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Maybe he's just full time ESPN now.
- 45:16Speaker 3: But Good Morning Football is his old show.
- 45:20Speaker 5: Right, and you and I'm sure you're aware of the
- 45:23Speaker 5: fact that that show has a bit of a branch
- 45:28Speaker 5: off of its own. It's Good Morning Football goes on
- 45:34Speaker 5: in the morning, obviously on the NFL network, and then
- 45:38Speaker 5: they have a show called Good Morning Football or GMF
- 45:43Speaker 5: over Todd and that one is syndicated and you can
- 45:49Speaker 5: watch that here in the market on KBBO on channel
- 45:53Speaker 5: fifty one every morning Monday through Friday at ten am.
- 45:58Speaker 5: And that's where we see, uh, my friend who has
- 46:04Speaker 5: has worked with me quite a bit, Isaiah Standback on
- 46:08Speaker 5: the high school football scene and is also the analyst
- 46:12Speaker 5: on Cowboys preseason telecast. In fact, he was supposed to
- 46:17Speaker 5: join us right before the playoffs and sometime when haywire
- 46:19Speaker 5: with our phones that day, we couldn't get him on
- 46:21Speaker 5: the Yeah, but you know what, we're gonna get him
- 46:24Speaker 5: on before the draft. We'll get him on, uh before
- 46:28Speaker 5: the draft, and because he and I have chatted since then,
- 46:31Speaker 5: and we'll get him back on. But he he works
- 46:33Speaker 5: on that Good Morning Football overtime show which has a
- 46:38Speaker 5: lot of the same cast of characters, but they do
- 46:41Speaker 5: roll in some different ones like man Ty was on
- 46:43Speaker 5: it sometimes Jamie Irdahl is on both shows I think
- 46:48Speaker 5: a lot of times, so they have different ones that
- 46:54Speaker 5: rotate in, and that includes Isaiah standback. So we'll get
- 46:56Speaker 5: say on to have him talk about some things with
- 47:00Speaker 5: to the Cowboys and the upcoming NFL Draft, because he's
- 47:02Speaker 5: really plugged in closely as we know to the Cowboys.
- 47:04Speaker 5: As I mentioned, he works in a lot of the
- 47:06Speaker 5: Dallas Cowboys programming on the SilverStar Network and also he
- 47:11Speaker 5: works on their preseason telecast. But anyway, we'll get his thoughts.
- 47:18Speaker 5: Which so this is the time of year where we
- 47:22Speaker 5: kind of just you know, compare a lot of the
- 47:26Speaker 5: mock draft stuff, and yesterday was the top one hundred
- 47:31Speaker 5: selections according to the Athletic who they're expected for ESPN.
- 47:38Speaker 5: Peter Schrager did one now he did a just a
- 47:42Speaker 5: first round all thirty two dicks, and in a comparison contrast,
- 47:49Speaker 5: his first three picks involved the same individuals. But I
- 47:57Speaker 5: think only one is on the same line, and that's
- 48:01Speaker 5: the overall number one pick for Nanda Mendoza, the Indiana
- 48:03Speaker 5: quarterback that they're expecting the Raiders to take. By the way,
- 48:08Speaker 5: I think you've probably noticed this, Jake, the Raiders are
- 48:10Speaker 5: getting quite a bit of, I don't know, praise, may
- 48:14Speaker 5: be too a little too effusive, but they're getting a
- 48:20Speaker 5: lot of compliments for what they're doing. Via Kirk Cousins
- 48:24Speaker 5: setting the stage for Fernando Mendoza with the thinking that
- 48:30Speaker 5: how many times, how many times have we seen an
- 48:34Speaker 5: NFL team draft some one with the number one pick
- 48:38Speaker 5: or very high in the first round a quarterback and
- 48:42Speaker 5: say we're gonna take We're gonna slow play it, We're
- 48:45Speaker 5: going to have him ready, but it's going to take
- 48:50Speaker 5: a while. We're not going to rush him in anything.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And then sure enough, either a training camp, injury comes up,
- 48:56Speaker 5: or they just decide by the season opener now not
- 49:00Speaker 5: he's ready, and then they throw him into the fire
- 49:03Speaker 5: and then this high draft choice either struggles or gets injured.
- 49:09Speaker 5: And the Raiders have said that if and of course
- 49:13Speaker 5: they're playing at CHOI saying if they draft Nanda Mendoza,
- 49:16Speaker 5: and everybody under the sun is expecting him to take Mendoza,
- 49:19Speaker 5: but if they draft him, they're going to slow play
- 49:23Speaker 5: it with him. And I know a lot of people
- 49:24Speaker 5: would roll their eyes and say, yeah, man, sure, But
- 49:26Speaker 5: then when they go out and go after Kirk Cousins,
- 49:29Speaker 5: then it has you thinking, Okay, well, maybe they've got
- 49:31Speaker 5: a plan in place for this well.
- 49:33Speaker 6: And both John Spytech and Clint Kubiak have been pretty
- 49:38Speaker 6: upfront about this. They think in an ideal world for
- 49:42Speaker 6: an end of Mendoza doesn't come in and start day
- 49:44Speaker 6: one and he gets to learn behind Kirk Cousins, who
- 49:47Speaker 6: for all of the faults at age thirty seven, now
- 49:50Speaker 6: the lack of mobility, posts Achilles injury, maybe the arm
- 49:52Speaker 6: strength not what it was, He's still a pros pro
- 49:55Speaker 6: and he knows how to come in and run an offense,
- 49:57Speaker 6: run an organization, and run a huddle, and when you're
- 49:59Speaker 6: gonna have a young and somewhat unproven offensive line like
- 50:04Speaker 6: the Raiders have. I know they went out and signed
- 50:06Speaker 6: what they signed the Baltimore Center to try and turn
- 50:08Speaker 6: things around there. But it's it's a bit of an
- 50:10Speaker 6: occupational hazard that Raiders offensive line at the moment. So
- 50:14Speaker 6: you want somebody as a veteran to come in and
- 50:16Speaker 6: navigate that and allow Mendoza to get up to speed,
- 50:18Speaker 6: because this is more than a one year project for
- 50:20Speaker 6: Vegas to turn it around.
- 50:22Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's why I said they're kind of getting
- 50:25Speaker 5: a few flowers thrown their way from making this move
- 50:28Speaker 5: with cousins to try to help ramp up Mendoza so
- 50:32Speaker 5: that they don't have to throw him immediately into the fire,
- 50:34Speaker 5: because the Raiders are as guilty as anybody of doing
- 50:37Speaker 5: that over the years. I mean, JaMarcus Russell, I think
- 50:41Speaker 5: is probably the biggest flop in NFL draft history. When
- 50:43Speaker 5: you say, if you had to, if if you had
- 50:45Speaker 5: to pick, which number one pick was the biggest flop?
- 50:49Speaker 4: And I know folks could look at Ryan Leaf and they.
- 50:55Speaker 5: Could some could look at Johnny Manzil, some you know,
- 50:59Speaker 5: look at differ number one picks and say it's the
- 51:02Speaker 5: biggest flop ever. Whatever it is, they want to make
- 51:04Speaker 5: sure they avoid it and give Mendoza every opportunity to succeed.
- 51:09Speaker 6: Is that a number one overall pick only or high
- 51:12Speaker 6: draft pick?
- 51:12Speaker 5: First round quarterbacks? That's what I would say high draft pick.
- 51:15Speaker 5: I mean they might be two separate categories. Though, now
- 51:18Speaker 5: let you bring it up.
- 51:19Speaker 6: It's either it's again, it's it's JaMarcus Russell. Pretty much,
- 51:26Speaker 6: it was a complete zero when he got to the league.
- 51:28Speaker 6: That was in that sense, he has a good case
- 51:30Speaker 6: for number one. You can argue, Trey Lance considering what
- 51:34Speaker 6: the forty nine ers gave up. It wasn't just using
- 51:36Speaker 6: that one draft pick. It was the massive haul that
- 51:40Speaker 6: the Miami Dolphins got back in that trade that Dolphins explained.
- 51:44Speaker 4: He's still in the league.
- 51:45Speaker 5: At least he's still in the league right trying to
- 51:48Speaker 5: make a career out of it. I mean, Russell was
- 51:50Speaker 5: completely out before what three years I guess it was.
- 51:54Speaker 5: It happened quickly, and I was I was young.
- 51:56Speaker 6: I couldn't understand as what an eight year old's boards fan,
- 52:00Speaker 6: how the guy that had just run circles around the
- 52:03Speaker 6: sec could could flop so badly in the NFL.
- 52:07Speaker 5: Being rushed in the service had something to do with it,
- 52:10Speaker 5: I would think. But in any event, Mendoza is pretty
- 52:18Speaker 5: much you would say consensus will be the number one
- 52:23Speaker 5: overall pick by all of those who do these things. Now,
- 52:26Speaker 5: the other two guys, if I'm remembering correctly, what we
- 52:29Speaker 5: saw from the athletic yesterday, is that they had Rvel
- 52:34Speaker 5: Reeese from Ohio State maybe at number two, and David
- 52:36Speaker 5: Bailey from Texas Tech at number three, I think, and
- 52:40Speaker 5: Schrager's got it the other way around.
- 52:42Speaker 4: He has.
- 52:44Speaker 5: Bailey to the Jets at to Reese to the Cardinals
- 52:48Speaker 5: at number three. Jeremiah Love who you said, your team,
- 52:54Speaker 5: the Commanders, you want him to avoid like the plague.
- 52:57Speaker 6: I would go that far. I think he's gonna have
- 52:58Speaker 6: a good career. I just I don't think it's what
- 53:00Speaker 6: the Commanders need to do well.
- 53:02Speaker 5: According to Schrager, the Titans are going to take it
- 53:05Speaker 5: at number four overall. Then he's got Francis Malgola, the
- 53:11Speaker 5: offensive tackle from Miami, going to the Giants at five.
- 53:13Speaker 5: That makes sense. The way that John Harball likes to
- 53:18Speaker 5: build his teams. He's called his offensive line of work
- 53:21Speaker 5: in progress of late Spencer Pano, the offensive tackle from
- 53:26Speaker 5: Utah to Cleveland. At six, your commanders to go for
- 53:30Speaker 5: Ohio state linebacker Sunny Styles. How would you feel about that?
- 53:34Speaker 6: Well, linebackers are for half the teams in the league
- 53:38Speaker 6: need a linebacker right now, right and so if you
- 53:40Speaker 6: can get a premier player at that position, you are
- 53:43Speaker 6: going to come out as a big winner in the draft.
- 53:45Speaker 6: The thing is, the last time the Commanders took a
- 53:47Speaker 6: first round linebacker it was Jamon Davis from Kentucky and
- 53:50Speaker 6: that didn't work out well at all. So again, it's
- 53:53Speaker 6: a different front office in there, different philosophy. But the
- 53:57Speaker 6: Commanders right now can't pressure a quarterback and can't stop
- 53:59Speaker 6: the run. So if anyone's going to be picked on
- 54:01Speaker 6: the front seven, I will likely give the picks some flowers.
- 54:04Speaker 4: Okay, all right?
- 54:05Speaker 5: He has the Saints today taking Reuben Bain Junior from
- 54:08Speaker 5: Miamidia dresser, Jordan Tyson, the Arizona state wide receiver to
- 54:11Speaker 5: go to the Chiefs at nine, Mansord Delany, the quarterback
- 54:16Speaker 5: from LSU to the Bengals at ten. Carnel Tate, the
- 54:21Speaker 5: Ohio state wide receiver and number eleven, Caleb Downs, the
- 54:25Speaker 5: Ohio State safety to the Cowboys at number twelve. I
- 54:27Speaker 5: think Cowboy fans would be happy with that choice. The
- 54:31Speaker 5: Rams in the pick they got from the Falcons, according
- 54:36Speaker 5: to Trigger, are going to take Mikayelem and the wide
- 54:38Speaker 5: receiver from USC. I'm kind of like, eh, I know,
- 54:41Speaker 5: DeVante Adams is entering the final year of his deal.
- 54:44Speaker 5: He turns thirty four in December, but you know they've
- 54:48Speaker 5: got they've got wide receivers now. Obviously, I think everybody's
- 54:52Speaker 5: going to see what's going on with Pukinakua since he's.
- 54:55Speaker 4: In rehab right now. How that all works out.
- 54:58Speaker 5: The Ravens at fourteen, according to Peter Schreger, going to
- 55:01Speaker 5: go for Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadik Jermald McCoy the
- 55:05Speaker 5: corner from Tennessee to go to the Bucks at fifteen,
- 55:08Speaker 5: Omar Cooper Junior the Indiana wide receiver to the Jets
- 55:11Speaker 5: and the pick they got from the Colts at sixteen,
- 55:14Speaker 5: the Lions to go for the penn State guard olive
- 55:17Speaker 5: A vega Ione at eighteen Emmanuel McNeil Warren the Toledo
- 55:22Speaker 5: safety to the Vikings Panthers to select Georgia offensive tackle
- 55:26Speaker 5: Monroe Freeling at nineteen. The Cowboys in the pick they
- 55:30Speaker 5: got from Green Bay would, according to Schrager, go for
- 55:36Speaker 5: a Key mesidor the Miami edge rusher. And again I
- 55:39Speaker 5: think Cowboy fans would largely like that TJ. Parker, the
- 55:43Speaker 5: edge rusher from Clemson to the Steelers at twenty one.
- 55:46Speaker 5: Chargers to take Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller at twenty two,
- 55:49Speaker 5: Denzel Boston, the wide receiver from the University of Washington
- 55:53Speaker 5: and go to the Eagles at twenty three. The Browns
- 55:56Speaker 5: in the pick they picked up from Jacksonville would take,
- 55:59Speaker 5: according to Casey conception on the A and M wide
- 56:02Speaker 5: receiver Bears to go for Alabama's huge offensive tackle Caten
- 56:05Speaker 5: Proctor at twenty five, Kate McDonald, the defensive tackle of
- 56:08Speaker 5: Ohio State to Buffalo at twenty six, Catle Bloomooth, the
- 56:11Speaker 5: offensive tackle from Utah to San Francisco twenty seven. The
- 56:15Speaker 5: Texans to take the Arizona State offensive tackle Max i
- 56:19Speaker 5: in Encore at twenty nine, Colton Hood the Tennessee corner
- 56:23Speaker 5: to go to the Chiefs. That was a pick they
- 56:25Speaker 5: got from the Rams at thirty Dylan Penam in the
- 56:29Speaker 5: safety from Oregon and go to the Dolphins a pick
- 56:31Speaker 5: they got from the Broncos. Kenyon Rutledge, the offensive lineman
- 56:36Speaker 5: from Georgia, check to the Patriots at thirty one, and
- 56:38Speaker 5: at thirty two Jedarian Price.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Notre Dame running back to go to the Seahawks. There.
- 56:43Speaker 5: So we'll keep tabs on all of these mock drafts
- 56:46Speaker 5: as he draw closer to it. And a reminder, the
- 56:48Speaker 5: big NFL Draft show here on the zone will come
- 56:51Speaker 5: on Draft Night from two to six thirty outs at
- 56:57Speaker 5: Raleigh Cowboy in Round Rock from two to six, and
- 57:00Speaker 5: the crew will be out there for that.
- 57:01Speaker 4: All right, weren't coming up?
- 57:02Speaker 5: As we continue on Sports Made going m thirteen under
- 57:04Speaker 5: the zone of the iHeartRadio app, some of you would.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Live through me Mill Grew and King.
- 57:14Speaker 5: Who are you entertaining us with on this return cup?
- 57:16Speaker 5: Which native Texan is getting the flowers here?
- 57:19Speaker 6: Well, we're going with little Steve Earl, feel all right?
- 57:22Speaker 6: He was He was born in Virginia but moved to
- 57:25Speaker 6: Texas as an infant called San Antonio home.
- 57:29Speaker 4: That makes sense, and Steve Earl is legend in the state.
- 57:35Speaker 4: You know what was it?
- 57:38Speaker 5: You know the old saying about people who moved to
- 57:41Speaker 5: Texas that weren't born here, that they got here as
- 57:44Speaker 5: quickly as they could, that sort of thing. I used
- 57:46Speaker 5: to tell people that I grew up in North Carolina
- 57:48Speaker 5: my first eighteen years, but I've lived most of my
- 57:50Speaker 5: life in the state of Texas. Mack Brown used to say,
- 57:54Speaker 5: I wasn't born in Texas. He's born in Tennessee, he said.
- 57:57Speaker 5: But I've been dipped and vaccinated, he said. Coach Royle
- 58:01Speaker 5: gave him that acknowledgment once and said, You've been dipped
- 58:05Speaker 5: and vaccinated.
- 58:06Speaker 4: So I like that. Yeah.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Another one who Spurs fans are happy to say has
- 58:11Speaker 5: been dipped and vaccinated, so to speak, and is naturalized
- 58:16Speaker 5: with them is Victor wembin Yama. Now, Wemby got hurt
- 58:21Speaker 5: last night was held out of the second half of
- 58:26Speaker 5: their win at home over the seventy six ers last night.
- 58:29Speaker 5: It was called a left rib contusion. Mitch Johnson said
- 58:33Speaker 5: after the game he'd heard nothing yet about the severity
- 58:36Speaker 5: of the injury. Here's the interesting thing. Victor wembin Yama
- 58:43Speaker 5: is an overwhelming favorite to win NBA Defensive Player of
- 58:48Speaker 5: the Year.
- 58:48Speaker 4: Would you not agree with.
- 58:49Speaker 6: That he should be the favorite for MVP. But yeah,
- 58:52Speaker 6: clearly the defensive Player of the Year.
- 58:54Speaker 5: And definitely a contender for MVP. I don't think there's
- 58:57Speaker 5: any doubt about that. But here's the thing. You don't
- 59:00Speaker 5: know how severe the injury is now. Women Yama played
- 59:06Speaker 5: fifteen minutes and forty seconds last night. That does count
- 59:10Speaker 5: toward eligibility for postseason awards. Players are granted two exceptions
- 59:16Speaker 5: to the requirement of playing twenty minutes in a game,
- 59:19Speaker 5: as long as they play at least fifteen minutes. He
- 59:24Speaker 5: played fifteen minutes and forty seconds, and he finished with
- 59:31Speaker 5: seventeen points, five rebounds in three blocks. But the way
- 59:34Speaker 5: this thing works is the Spurs have three games remaining.
- 59:39Speaker 5: He has to play at least twenty minutes in one
- 59:43Speaker 5: of those three games to maintain eligibility for postseason awards.
- 59:49Speaker 5: You know, this came up last week when Luka Dancic
- 59:55Speaker 5: hurt the hamstring last Thursday in the Lakers game, and
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: there were I think at the time five games remaining,
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: and he was one game shy of the necessary participation
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: requirement in order to qualify for postseason awards.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: And I think most.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: Of the Lakers have been kind of quiet about it,
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: but I think most of that they're going to say
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: that he's they'd said it looks like he'd be out
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: for the rest of the regular season, so that would
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: take him out of consideration for those awards. But it's
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: going to be interesting to see now, depending on the
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: extent of that rib injury, if Wimby's able to play.
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: He was coming off a string of three straight games
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: where he scored at least thirty points and had at
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: least fifteen rebounds and at least three blocks. Believe it
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: or not, that number thirty points, fifteen rebounds, three blocks.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: Ties for the second longest.
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: Streak of that three straight games of that since blocks
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: started being tracked in the seventy three seventy four season. Wow,
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: And that ties per second behind Shaquille O'Neal's four game
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: run in ninety nine. So here's a guy who's averaging
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: twenty five points a game, nearly twelve rebounds, over three
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: blocks per game, but he's going.
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: To have to play.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: If he's going to be eligible, he is going to
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: have to play. I think he had the two exceptions
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: to the deal, but he needs to play at least
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: twenty minutes in one of the three remaining regular season
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: games to maintain eligibility for the postseason awards.
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: Unintended consequence Craig of this kind of mandate that the
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: NBA has put in to limit the load management that's
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: been happening.
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I mean that's how the NBA, I will
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: give him credit for this, because they've you know, what
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: Adam Silver has tried to do in his staff is
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: they've tried to be proactive in addressing things like load
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: management and tanking. So they're already, you know, talking about
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: what they're going to do with new tanking rules, and
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: now here's the load management rules. And and Victor rembin
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: Yama is not the poster child for load management. However,
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: Greg Popovich is the all time leader in load management
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: when he was coaching. Be interested interesting to see how
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: Mitch Johnson handles this now. But when pop was coaching, oh,
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: load management, I mean he invented load management. Remember, he
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: used to put stuff like when when Tim Duncan was playing,
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: and it would stay on the stat sheet DNP dash
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: dash old. It didn't say coaches this and it just
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: said old, and so they would have stuff like that,
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: but on there.
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: So anyway, Well, the interesting part of this, Craig and
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: I talked to Carl Shoning about it a little last week.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: Wenby cares about this stuff, right, He's all about the
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: team number one, but he out of kind of respect
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: for the game and knowledge of how he'll be looked
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: back on as a player, is very cognizant of these things,
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: and he, you know, it'll be interesting to see whether
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: or not the push comes from him to get out
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: there and play to be eligible for these wollwe absolutely.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: I remember he was stating his case last week when
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: somebody asked him to state his case for why.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: He should be the MVP.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: It's refreshing, Yeah, to listen, this is why I think
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: I should be the MVP, and he listed those things down,
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: so you're right, it does mean something. That's why I said,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: it's going to be interesting to watch and see how
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Mitch Johnson handles this.
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: two here on thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: Well, congratulations to the Michigan Wolverines winning another national championship.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: The broadcast you heard here on thirteen hundred Zone last
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: night from Westwood one and my old pale Kevin Coogler
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: on the call there and the Michigan Wolverines winning their
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: second national title, Kevin pointing out that there'd been that
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: blank ary in the trophy case. One thing that I
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: did find I guess refreshing is the right way to
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: put it. It was surprised me a little bit. You had
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: a couple of members of the Fab five tweeting last night,
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: Jalen Rose. I expected it from Chris Weber. If you've
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: ever seen the Fab five treatment documentary on ESPN, Chris
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: Weber comes away, You come away with it, looking at
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: it feeling that. Chris Webber is a very much an
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: embittered person about this. So it was good to see
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: him being able to tweet his.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: Excitement about that.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Because the Fab five never won a national championship on
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: the floor, they got to the national championship game in
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: back to back heres in ninety two and ninety three,
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: lost to Duke ninety two, lost in North Carolina ninety three,
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: but Michigan stated it's claim and clearly was the best
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: team in all of college basketball by the time it smoke.
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: The smoke had cleared, they played really, really well. So
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: the Wolverines win a men's basketball National Championship.
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: The women got to.
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: The Elite eight, and they have the number one ranked
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: or not number one. UCLA is the number one ranked
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: college baseball team, but the Big Ten has the number
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: one ranked college baseball team in UCLA. They have a
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: national champion in football in Indiana, a national champion in
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: men's basketball in Michigan, and a national champion in women's
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: basketball UCLA, and a couple other titles in the more
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: Olympic sports. So the Big Ten stating its case as well.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: Third hour of the program here Craig Way alongside the
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: producer Jay Carman. Coming up in a few minutes, we'll
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: have a conversation with Keith Morlan, my broadcast partner for
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: Long Worn Baseball. We bring you the program today from
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: ufc U Diish falk Field. Longhorn's going through their warm
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: ups on the field early on and getting ready for
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: this matchup with the Cardinals of Incarnate Word. Texas still
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: number two in the country in the latest college baseball polls,
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: but of course huge series coming up with Texas A
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: and M this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bluebelt Park
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: in College Station. In fact, the Aggies have a good
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: little RPI contest that's set up for them coming up
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: tonight in San Marcos road game. Texas State is thirty eight,
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: I think, number thirty eight in the RPI. Texas A
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: and M is eighteen in the RPI, and Texas I
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: think in the RPI is actually number three in the
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: RPI and number two Nashley ranked. But Texas A and
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: M plays at Texas State tonight and that's a big
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: game for both of those teams.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: I mentioned.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: Texas State is thirty eight in the RPI right now,
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: but they're significantly behind the leader. They're tied for second,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: but the four games behind Coastal Carolina, who currently has
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: ranked thirteenth in the country.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: Coastal a very good program.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: When the Log Warns faced them at Dykin Park in
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: Houston in that early season classic the three games in
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: three days, Coastal Carolina was down two pitchers, two of
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: their starters. They've got those guys back now, or one
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: of the guys, and they expect to get the second back,
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: and they're going to be tough to beat as the
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: season progresses. Remember, Coaschtal got two the National Championship Series
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: before falling to LSU. The run in the big in
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: the SEC is going to be fascinating to watch because
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: of the close nature of things. Georgia's number one in
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: the league on top of the league standings at ten
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: and two, Texas is nine and three, Alabama's eight and four,
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: and he got several other teams very close by, even
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: teams that are a little further back in the pack
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: like Lshu's four games back.
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: They're six and six.
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: You know, they're a good ball club, and they just
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: come off taking two or three from Tennessee. Oklahoma dropped
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: two out of three at home in Alabama. Who will
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: be here next weekend. Bama's at eight and four in
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: the league, but you know, Oklahoma's a good program as well.
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: They won a non conference game last night over Dallas Baptist,
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: a Monday night non conference game, and that's because they
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: have a Thursday through Saturday weekend series in Nashville against Vanderbilt.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: So that's why they played the non conference game last night.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: And they, in addition to playing the non conference game
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: last night, opened their conference series on Thursday night in
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Nashville taking on Vanderbilt. All Right, we're gonna visit with
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: Keith Moreland about all of this also coming up a
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: little later on this hour, we're gonna hear from Longhorn's
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: head coach Steve Sarkeesian from his media availability that he did.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Today following the practice.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: We were going to play it out of the gate,
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: but but we're up against him right now to a break,
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: and then we've got Keith Morland, so we're gonna play
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: that for you his opening thoughts about how his team
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: is progressing in the spring workouts, which of course culminate
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: on the eighteenth with that Saturday open practice day for
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Long Worn fans to come out. That'll be part of
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: that fan fest where they can take part in interactive
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: games and activities and avail themselves of the fire sale
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: of the team shop whether I have all kinds of
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Longhorn gear, both team apparel type and actually game worn
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: jerseys and things like that available. Also, there'll be an
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: autograph session where fans can get an autograph poster, and
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: in addition to that, Sark will be on the field
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: to take some photographs with fans. It'll all be on
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: the first come first or basis. All of that begins
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: at nine point thirty and then the Long Worn Football
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: team will have its final practice of the spring drills
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: at eleven o'clock, so it will be an open practice
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: for the fans, not a full scrimmage, but an open practice,
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: and they'll have that on the field at DKR Texas
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: Memorial Stadium. That's all coming up on Saturday eighteenth, which
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: is the same day as game number two of what
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: is shaping up to be a huge weekend series for
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: long worn baseball that we can at home against Alabama,
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: So you could go over for all of the football activities,
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: then come over for the baseball game on Saturday after day,
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: all right, speaking to college baseball. Up next, we visited
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: Keith Morland, my broadcast partner in Longhorn Baseball, to talk
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: about this Texas team, the SEC race, and the national scene.
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: It's all coming up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: under the Zone any iHeartRadio app.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: We're back.
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: It's the craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: and voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: It is the game day here at uf HU dish
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: Fog Field, Game day tonight for the Longhorns taking on
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: the Cardinals of Incarnate Word, and we'll talk a little
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: bit about that in a moment, but my broadcast partner,
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: Keith Morland joins me for it.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: I wanted to give a little bit of retrospective of
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: the weekend. I talked yesterday with Ty Harrington on the program.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: We kind of went to general overview on a lot
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: of things, but I wanted to get into some specifics
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: with regard to the weekend because there were some curious
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: themes I thought that came out of the weekend, and
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: I was curious to get your thoughts on, first and
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: foremost a question that you put to Jim slowst Angle
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: after the game, and I was thinking about it. I
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: just landed with women's basketball team coming back from Phoenix.
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: I was in the truck. I was driving home and
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: I heard the eighth, the ninth innings, and then the post.
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: Came and you brought up finding a way to win
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: a series, and the casual fan, especially, there's no such
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: thing as a casual long work fan.
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: But anyway, they would.
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: Look at it and say, Okay, they got blown out
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: by the last place team in the league, came back
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: and they had to gut out two wins to win
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: the series. And you know how it is with a
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: fan base sometimes they're like, it's it's it's not that
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: you won, it's like, well, how impressive were you when
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: you won? You know that kind of thing, and uh
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: and Jim mentioned the same thing. I think you find
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: a way to win, especially on the road in conference play.
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: Just ask Kentucky. Missouri had one conference win going into
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: the weekend, and they took two out of three in
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: Lexington over over Kentucky over the weekend.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: So it's this league. I guess it has a lot
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: to do with it.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, and you want to win serious, I mean,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: that's an important thing first and foremost. I really felt
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: and listening to Gym's answer and sort of analyzing it
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: on the flight home on Sunday night, I felt like
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: that this was an offensive team that did not play
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: well offensively pretty much all last week, and so they
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: got away from some of the things that they've done well.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: A running game did not appear. They weren't able to
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: put pressure on a South Carolina team that struggled in
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: that department, you know, slowing the running game down. So
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: they didn't get into the running game. And we saw
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: awful lot of right handed hitters pulling off balls and
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: you've heard me talk about this before, about standing through
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: the ball and the things you need to do. It
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: just was not a good offensive series. This is a
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: good time to play South Carolina in that sense. Now
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: that being said, Greg Olsen's a good friend teammate of mind.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: He did the Friday night game on national television and
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: he said the same thing to me. He said, this
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: is a lot different South Carolina team after they let
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: go of their head coach, because they've installed three physical
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: guys in their lineup. Now they're young kids. Bo Hollins,
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: son of a major leaguer. He struggled a little bit,
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: but you see him in the box. He' six two
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: hundred and twenty pounds and watched them take VP. This
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: is a different looking team for South Carolina than it
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: was a month ago. So that being said, I don't
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: know how many more games they are gonna win. But
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Friday night was a good crowd. It was one of
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: those crowds where it was late arriving and they were
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: rooting for South Carolina basketball. But then as soon as
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: basketball you can see everybody starting to come in. The
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: women's won their game, and then all of a sudden,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: the crowd showed up on Friday night, and it was
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: it was sort of weird in that perspective, but this
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: is an offensive team that's got to get back to
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: the basic things that they were doing. The one guy
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: that probably stayed through and I just saw where he
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: was a Coke Freshman of the Week and the SEC
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: is Anthony Pat Junior. He's really done a good job
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: using the whole field. So they've got to get back
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: to doing those things. Mendoza's got to get back to
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: using old field. Robbins who's been hitting balls out of
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: the ballpark, I'm not going to say that. And then
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: the last thing is you see Carson Tenty start to
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: get hot. Boy, that's going to be a really plus
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: for this team down the stretch.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: No question. Okay, a couple of questions. First of all,
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: and this was something I brought up with Tye because
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: as a long time a head coach, he saw it
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: a lot and and it goes across all levels of sports.
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: And that's the quote unquote freshman wall that happens. We
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: haven't seen that from Anthony Pat, have not, have not.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: I mean, he's he's at one hundred and ten, one
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: hundred and twelve at bats.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Usually that wall for college baseball, you and I have
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: done it for so long. We know, always look at
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: one hundred and fiftyeth bats and one hundred and fiftieth
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: bats from that point on is a push through because
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: you know, kids in high school and even in their
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: summer leagues don't really add those together and get more
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: than one hundred and fifty at bats. So, but in
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: college baseball, you play four days a week. If you
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: get it, you're you're in the lineup every day. That
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: means for at bats a day. So you just look
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: at it sixteen times, sixteen times the weeks, it's going
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: to be two hundred, two hundred and twenty five at bats,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: So how do you finish at that point? He's just
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: done a really nice job. I interviewed him after the game,
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: and he sounds like the same young man that we
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: had earlier in the year. When we had him in
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: the postseason. You can see him growing up, starting to understand.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: He says, I don't look at it. I'm a four
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: hole hitter. I'd love that answer. When I asked him
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: that question in the post game, he said, I'm just
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: in the line to do my job and get and
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: get on base and help this team win. I just
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: love that answer.
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: Your thoughts on what Schloss has had to do with
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: his infield with a Rod still out, He kind of
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: did some switching back and forth, had Temo at short
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: and then at third, and then Borbit third and then
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: at first and back at third and all that sort
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: of stuff. Gumbo, who had a solid weekend, was over
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: at second base. How about your your thoughts on the
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: moving and shaking that was necessitated by the injury to
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: ay to Ian Rodriguez and what and what gem has
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: had to do well.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Timo has done his job, let's start with that. And
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: I think the biggest surprise has not been bored of
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: being able to play third base. He played exceptionally well
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: over the weekend and they were hitting shots at him.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: He had a bunch of plays. I think Levingston at
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: first base has been a real surprise. He's picked three
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: or four balls in the dirt. He's done a nice
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: job of securing that position. So I think it's set
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: now until we get a Rod back into the lineup,
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: it's going to be Timo Casey at third and Josh
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: at first. And you do that that allows Gumbo to
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: get back into the rotation in the outfield, because I mean,
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: this team's down two really good offensive players. I mean,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: when you look at Josh Out and you look at
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: at a rod Out, both of them are really good players.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: They can do so many different things. They set positions
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: and allow you to move your lineup around as a
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: head coach to the way you want a position against
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: the left or right handed pitcher. Well, there's very few
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: choices here. I mean, in reality, there are four extra players.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: And when I looked at you know, you see him
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: out stretching before the game. You know you got eight
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: everyday starters, and then there's only four other guys with him,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: and you look down there and you think, wow, there's
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: only twelve players, twelve offensive players because there's not many
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: two way players on this club. So the next few
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: weeks they got to stay healthy, try to get everybody
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: back out on the field, and if they can, if
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: they can do that, I like what they're sitting up.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Timo was a prof I hate to use that term.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: I use it all the time, and it makes me cringely.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: He's a professional player with nil time. It's almost prefersit.
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: I just got through last night watching Oklahoma play in
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: the in the Crown the Back College Basketball Crown Championship
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: game against West Virginia. West Virginia won the game in overtime,
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: and all gust Jobs and kept talking about was three
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: hundred thousand dollars on the line. You know that it
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: was going into ni L. So it kind of made
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: me kind.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: Of stringy, you know. So that's what I'm saying. But uh, I,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: I really think that he is such a great commodity
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: for a club. What he does offensively, he can move
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: over to short. He's very adequate. He's not going to
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: make spectacular plays, but he's going to make the routine
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: plays and that's all you can ask of a player
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: to do. And in case, he he's been a third
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: basement so that's not a huge switch for him. Albeit
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: he went to dirt on the road and had I'm
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: pretty sure in one game he had seven putouts. I
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: mean that's you know, assist where he's catching the ball
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: and going across the diamond and they were not hit
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: easily at him. So I think this team's going to
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: be all right. Of course, this is an interesting week
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: we got coming up. I mean, we go into tonight,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: you try to win the game tonight, and then you know,
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: everybody knows what Friday Star in the Sun's gonna be like.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and Jim had mentioned that he was far more
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: concerned about the field turf to dirt and grass adjustment.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: Did you feel they handled all of that really well
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: since they're gonna have to deal with it in College
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: Station this week? And as we know, you tell me
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: if I'm wrong. I think that that that grass surface,
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: the grass and dirt surface in College Station is as
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: good as you'll find in college baseball.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: I know you said auburns was great. Auburn's great all
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: the dirt field, dirt and grass fields. The one we
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: just played in Founders Park was very too as well,
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: because we had to walk through every day across it
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: to get in and out from the parking for a
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: media parking, so it's a nice ball park. There is
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: no question that the speed of the game speeds up.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: And it sounds crazy that when you play on dirt
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: and grass, because dirt to dirt hops do not react
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: the same way on turf to turf hops, and so
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: turf to turf hops seem to stay down a little more.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: You don't know what the ball is going to do
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: dirt to dirt. It could stay down or it could
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: come straight up and get over your shoulder. So I
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: think I'm an old school guy. I'd love to see
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: everybody playing on grass and dirt. But that's just you know,
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: that's where I come from. Understand it. Now, I understand
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: you want to get games in, and the weather conditions
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: and the expenses of you of keeping your grass field. Everybody,
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: every fan walks by. I said, I wish we'd turn
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: the grass. I said, it's very expensive, and people don't realize.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: He said, well, turf is more expensive to put in. Yeah,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: but you put it in, you have you have very little.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: It's a set cost. It's a set cost where when
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: you put dirt and grass and you've got to have
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: somebody taking care of it all the time.
- 1:21:03Speaker 5: Especially to me, look like the ones we've seen in
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: the SEC maintenance. Yes, it's a big part. Okay, Pitching.
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: I listened to even as I was setting up to
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: call that semi final game on Friday night, I was
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: listening to you and Roger Lot and you were talking
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: about Ruga rio Haas and you said, doesn't have command
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: of the breaking ball. And I, even as I watched
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: as I was calling the game. I pulled up the
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: baseball game, had all my laptop while I'm calling the
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: basketball game. I'd do that routinely anyway with things. But
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: it did look like he was struggling with the breaking ball.
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: Was it as simple as something that like that? That
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: led easily his worst outing of the season.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Well, first and foremost, South Carolina went hunting fastballs, so
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: they were very aggressive in the game. Of the first
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: seven bats. I think we got it on the air
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: because I was sort of writing them down. Is you know,
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I'm over there doing the same thing when you're broadcasting.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: I'm listening righting and seeing what's going on. I think
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: seven of the first nine hitters swung at either pitch
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: one or pitch two. So they were hunting fastballs. And
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: then when he tried understood that and then Max and
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: they start all right, we got to change what we're doing.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: In the beginning here, he just couldn't get his breaking
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: ball down. Everything it was it had break to it,
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: but it was breaking in the middle of the plate
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: and up, and that's not a good combination for a
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: breaking ball. So they were chasing fastballs, and no question
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: they were ready to hit, and because they looked at
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: the strike walk ratuer, you got sixty strikeouts and six walks.
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: As a hitter, I'm going, well, this guy's not gonna
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: walk me. He's going to come after me. So you
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: got to go hitting. And they went hitting early and
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: did a good job against him. I expect to bounce
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: back from him. I don't think there's a question. I
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: think even though it's going to be on the road,
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: and even though it's not his home mound, I expect
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: him to come back and pitch well against the Aggies
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: and then we'll step it forward to Saturday. And I'm
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: going to tell you what one of the MVPs of
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: this club is, Luke Harrison. What he has done on
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Saturdays has been remarkable.
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: And I've totally been over the last like three starts,
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: right because he had some struggles early on getting through
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: the fourth inning, But his last three starts, we've.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: Got to well in conference, You've lost the opening game
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: on Friday night and he's had to take the ball
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: to keep you in the series, and Texas hasn't lost
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: the series. So what does that mean. He's like twenty
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: two and three and his starts twenty two and three,
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: not his record, but the team's record is twenty two
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: and three. When he starts a game. He's just been magnificent.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: He's been a bulldog and it's so good. He's such
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: a great young man when you talk to him and
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: seem he doesn't take it in as a you know
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: that this falls on my shoulders, but he's willing to
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: take the ball and go okay.
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: And then with regard to bridging it and closing it out,
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: is it safe to say that right now, right now,
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: Jim and Maxweener might be comfortable with Burns and maybe
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: Crosslin setting it up with Cozart finishing, or is there
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: still some movement around in that I can't.
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: Get in their head.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: No, no, but you want me to ask what I
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: was doing it gets to the sixth and seventh, I'm
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: gonna use I'm going to use Crossland and Burns to
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: get me to the eighth and then I'm gonna have
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: Hayden the floor and the and the eighth, and I'm
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: going to close it with Zach Cozart if that's the
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: way I had to do against So now that's my opinion.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: I don't make those decisions, but right but those guys
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: have been those four guys. Matt would mack talking with
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Max just for a second, is he said, he started
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: to mention it, and then Jim started mention it that
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: they thought Burns was getting closer and that was the
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: best Burns we saw on Sunday that we've seen. It's
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: still high leveraged situation. It's just not outs in twenty five,
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: twenty six, at twenty seven.
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: And you think le few Is is more than just
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: a situational one batter.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: Left handed guy has.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Got such a good breaking ball that right handed hitters
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: are not going to get great swings on him. It's
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: about strikes for him. If he gets strike one on you,
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: you've got real trouble as a hitter because he can
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: go to his heart breaking ball. Are he still got
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: ninety three ninety four with the heater? So I really
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: like him in that scenario. Now, it may be that
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: the seventh you have three left handed hitters in a row,
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: and you know, let's say that crustling gets you through
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: the seventh and then you got three left tended hits
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: the road, you decide you want to go to the pen.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: You go get him, and then in the eighth there's
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: three right hand hitters. You might go get Burnsy and
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: and and Zach. The other thing about Zach, he's a
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: young freshman, and you know at this point of the
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: year they're not freshman anymore. But he is a guy
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: because he started and whatever, he's probably can give you
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: a five out, say, better than the other three guys
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: we were talking about. You could probably extend him a
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: little bit because of the fact that he's taking the
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: ball and throwing eighty pitches a couple of times.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, with regard to the rest of this league,
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: and I was watching a lot of SEC coverage and stuff,
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: and they say, right now, George is the best ball
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: club in the league. They're just absolutely just crushing the ball,
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: you know from personal experience, and they made some reference
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: to it fully fills a bit of a bandbox, it is,
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: so you're going to get more home run that's going
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: out of that deal. But they are ten and two
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: in the league. And then and then Alabama who comes
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: into here week after next. They're eight and four in
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: the league and took two out of three and Norman
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: over the weekend. Looks like they've improved quite Yeah. I
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: think I think the two teams that I probably am
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: stunned about. One is on the upside is Alabama, and
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: one is on the downside of Arkansas. Yeah, I just
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: I'm having a real tough time looking at because I
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: looked at that roster at the beginning of the season
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: and I thought, this is going to be a really
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: good ball club, but it just hasn't worked out that well.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: Georgia has also done really good job out of the bullpen.
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: When you start looking at bullpen numbers, their starting pitchers
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: have been just okay, but they've had three or four.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Guys out of the bullpen and pitched really well. And
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: in their home ballpark, they're hard to be because they're
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: built to hit the ball. The ballpark it is a
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: great hitters park.
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: They go on the road, you know, I was really
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: interested to see what happened in Starkville this weekend. And
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: they go on the road and take care of business,
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: which was just amazed me. And Alabama's been able to
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: play good at home and on the road. Yeah, So
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: that's the other things that surprised me a little bit
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: about Alabama. So it's going to be We've got an
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: interesting you know, when we looked at the schedule. I
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: don't know about you. I looked at the schedule out though, Well,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: South Carolina has been struggling. You got the Aggi's on
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: the road, and then you're gonna get Alabama at home
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: before you go to play a really good Vanderbilt team. Well,
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: the two teams out of this that are not playing
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: as well, one of them is Vandy and one of
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: them is the Aggies.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: But the Baggies played better this weekend to two out
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: of three, one both games with a doubleheader against vander Yea.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: And so you know, I looked at that, and it
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: is going to be an incredible environment. It is going
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: to be a very tough time. First time coach Slash
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: has been back. So there's there's so many things that
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: are in this that, uh, there are going to be
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: fifteen thousand people around that ballparking ready to go Friday.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: Night, get no doubt.
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: And then and then the other two teams are kind
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: of surprised. I guess you can even put LSU into
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: this category. And they just got to six and six
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: by scoring ten in the twelfth to win yesterday's watching
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: that game against Tennessee, Tennessee's four and eight in the league.
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: And the easy response folks will say is they haven't
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: adjusted with Vitello and Frank Handerson, and having gone to
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: the majors, they haven't. They just haven't adjusted. And the
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: other's Florida. They dropped two or three at home to
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: Ole Miss, and they had supposedly the best closer in
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: the league and they just light him up in the
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: ninth inning for an Old Miss team that was coming
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: off being swept by Mississippi State, who just got swept
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: by Georgia.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a tough league. Listen, a heavyweight fight
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: every time out. But we have had Doctor Jeckyll mister
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: have in this league. I mean, Florida goes sweeps on
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: the road, gets you beat it home, just like you said, Arkansas,
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: I can't quite figure out Tennessee. You know, they get
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: back and start playing pretty good ball, and then all
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: of a sudden Lsu, who's been Stralian comes in and
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: beats him to ou of three. So I gotta tell you, I,
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: each and every week until we get to May, I can't.
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: I can't tell you who's gonna win this league.
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: I was thinking Kentucky's pretty good, and they just dropped
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: two of three at home at home to a Missouri
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: team that likes South Carolina went into the weekend having
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: won only one conference game.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but Missouri is much improved team, much better team
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: they were last year. I mean, just across the league
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: with you just look at them when they play their
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: non conference schedules. I guess teams like Kansas. Oh, by
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: the way, he's playing really well in the Big Twelve.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: You know when you start seeing some of the things
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: they're doing on Tuesday night, Missouri has gotten better. They're
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: gonna have to get better to compete in this league.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: And South Carolina will get better in this league. I mean,
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: it's just too good a ballparking, too good a history
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: of a school in college baseball. But I got to
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: tell you, every weekend, you look I already looked at
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: this weekend scheduled to see what's going on and going Man,
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: that's a good series. Man, that's a good series, every
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: one of them. You just look at it. Just something
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: that great to go around and just see the best
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: game every day during the.
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: Week on the national scene, simply because of the way
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: the SEC cannibalizes one another. Is that UCLA and then
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: there's a big drop to the rest of the group.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: I think UCLA is far and away the best team
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: right now in the country, without a doubt. They do
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: not play in a weekend, week out league that's going
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: to really test them, so we're we're really not going
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: to know a lot about them. I don't think until
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: probably a super regional. Yeah, but you know when you
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: put together some of the guys that they put together
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: there that that is a physical They can get the
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: ball the ballpark. They got one of the best, if
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: not the best player in the country playing shortstop, and
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: they're good on the mound. I don't don't out West
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: is probably better than it has been. I think Oregon
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: State is still good again. I think USC is better.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: I don't think USC has been really tested yet when
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: you see what they're scheduling, where they've gone. They've gone
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: to play some people that have not been good. But
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: I know that USC and UCLA down the stretch have
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: got much tougher schedule. I think both of them have
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: to make trips to Washington and both of them have
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: to make trips to Oregon.
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: You know, one of the weird things I think I
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: ever saw was over the weekend Oregon State playing a
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: weekend series in April in Beaumont and lamar.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: At lamar At Lamar. Well, they they're independent right now.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: They're trying to find a league. I mean obviously next
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: next year that it'll be in Sam Marcus when they're
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: on the Bobcats, because that's gonna be in the Pac twelve.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: You know, football may not get back to the Pac twelve,
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: but Pack twelve baseball. Gonzaga is good, Oregon State is good,
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Texas State's good, Dallas Baptist is good. Yeah, so you're
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: gonna have teams in the pack that are gonna be legitimate,
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: you know, legitimate super regional hosts.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: That's true, Very good. Uh, I appreciate you doing this.
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: We'll get ready to call a ball game in a
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: little while. Wow, let's get after it all right. That's
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: Keith Mortloill joined up for the call six point fifteen.
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: The pregame star time at six point thirty, and you
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: can hear that on one oh three point one FM,
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: Austin's eighty station one oh three point one FM, as
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: well as on the iHeartRadio app and also on the
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: Texas Long Ones app. More're coming up from UFCU just
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: far Field here on thirteen under the.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Zone, Michigan bothering the inbound flip and read here comes Smith.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: Ten seconds left. Smith's Name's inside flavor old no rebound,
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: loose bit to the deck, picked up.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: By Dale, he plays into the other side. Game fucking three?
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: Care about catch?
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Just look that.
- 1:32:01Speaker 8: Michigan wins sexty nine, sexty three, The Laders at Best
- 1:32:08Speaker 8: reached college basketball spinnacle for the second time.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: Michigan wins the national.
- 1:32:16Speaker 8: Championship sixty nine sixty three over the Huskies of Connecticut.
- 1:32:22Speaker 8: And Terry Mills you in that nineteen eighty nineteen finally
- 1:32:27Speaker 8: have company.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: And we're back to the Craig Way Show.
- 1:32:31Speaker 7: Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
- 1:32:34Speaker 7: talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: That's Brian Bush, who I've gotten a chance to get
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: to know him over the years. He was a studio
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: producer for lear Field for while and subbed in as
- 1:32:47Speaker 5: a studio anchor for US and then became Michigan's basketball
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: play by playboys a couple of years ago. It's good
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: for him for Brian mintioned Terry Mills, I mentioned the
- 1:32:56Speaker 5: Glenn Rice I had mentioned Ramel Robbinson, Terry Mills, another
- 1:33:00Speaker 5: member of that nineteen eighty nine national championship team for
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: the Michigan Wolverines, and now they have a second basketball
- 1:33:10Speaker 5: national championship. Of course, Steve Sarkisian is working to build
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: a long worn football national championship team, just as Jim
- 1:33:18Speaker 5: Schlosnigles trying to build a baseball national title. Are thanks
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: again to keep Moreland joining us there on the program
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: to talk about this Texas team and what's in front
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: of them and what's ahead in the SEC race and
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: what's theyhead on the national scene as well. And Sark
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: has a few spring football practices left. But here's Sark's
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: thoughts coming off this morning's spring practice when he met
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: with the media shortly afterwards.
- 1:33:44Speaker 9: Oh yeah, two weeks ago. And that's a part of
- 1:33:47Speaker 9: it is exciting. Part of it gives you a little
- 1:33:49Speaker 9: bit of you know, kind of like we gotta keep pushing,
- 1:33:53Speaker 9: We got to keep going. And that was kind of
- 1:33:55Speaker 9: the message to the team today. It's like, you know,
- 1:33:57Speaker 9: we had a really good scrimmage Friday night. We had
- 1:34:00Speaker 9: six practices to go. Now we have five after today,
- 1:34:03Speaker 9: and we're gonna keep pushing to get better and we
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: can't settle and and I think that that was some
- 1:34:10Speaker 9: of that was conveyed to the players today.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: It was I was probab of their work.
- 1:34:13Speaker 9: But I think we can be a little better than
- 1:34:15Speaker 9: we were today, just from an intentional standpoint of what
- 1:34:17Speaker 9: we're trying to get accomplished. But proud of our guys
- 1:34:20Speaker 9: are working hard. Everybody's doing their thing the way we
- 1:34:23Speaker 9: want them to do it. But I want more and
- 1:34:26Speaker 9: I think that's the that's the part of being a
- 1:34:28Speaker 9: coaches is demanding more and pushing for more, and you know,
- 1:34:32Speaker 9: getting the guys to respond to that.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: Sark and the Logorns will continue their work at on
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: Denius Fields and obviously in the bubble as well and
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: inside of the stadium as well. Bill Connley, who covers
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: college football very well for ESPN, wrote a piece about
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: the best or his favorite put it that way, transfer
- 1:34:57Speaker 5: portal classes, and.
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: He rates Oklahoma State at number one.
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: Oklahoma State, of course, got Drew Messamaker, the North Texas quarterback,
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: and Caleb Hawkins, who had eighteen hundred plus yards from
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: scrimmage as a freshman the running back, and Wyat Young
- 1:35:15Speaker 5: mess to Maker's favorite receiving target. They picked up three
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: North Texas mean green players who you know, part of
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: that team that reached the American Conference Championship game. Because
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: of course, with Eric Morris taking the head coaching job
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: at Oklahoma State, so he stepped in the portal number two.
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: How about Indiana, the defending national champions lose Fernando Mendoza,
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: pick up Josh Hoover, the TCU quarterback. Pick up Turbo Rashard,
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: the Boston College running back picked up almost one thousand
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: yards from scrimmage number two, Colorado number three, including that
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: really good playmaking receiver we saw him for San Jose State,
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: Danny Scaudero, and he had almost thirteen hundred receiving yards
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: and ten touchdowns.
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: Four through six.
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: It said you could take your choice Texas Tech LSU
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: and Miami UCLA seven, Kansas State eight, West Virginia nine,
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: Florida Atlantic number ten, Houston eleven, Washington State twelve, Kentucky thirteen,
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: Cal fourteen, the Loghorns at number fifteen. And what Conley said,
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: based on raw upside, I could have easily ranked this
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: class in the batch with Texas Tech, LSU and Miami
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: and above. But it felt a bit like Sarcasian was
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: fighting the last War. He needed Skill Corps in offensive
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: line upgrades last season, and he shoved ten Skill Corps
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: guys and five O linemen out the door to make
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: this year's upgrades. That means depth might still end up
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: being an issue and the last year's development efforts were
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: awfully waste. That won't matter if, obviously Cam Coleman starts
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: living up to his potential and Hollywood Brown excuse me,
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: Hollywood Smothers and Relief Brown both stay healthy as running backs.
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: But Sark's offseason was more reactive than proactive to me.
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: That's according to Bill Conley. The rest of his top twenty,
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: he had Virginia sixteen, Virginia Tech seventeen, Auburn eighteen, Tulsa nineteen,
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: and Iowa twenty. So that was a look at the
- 1:37:32Speaker 5: transfer portal there. Sark has also said this on several occasions.
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: The portal to him is not the means to the end.
- 1:37:41Speaker 5: The portal is supplemental.
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: He said.
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: The biggest issue and the biggest thing we want to
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: have is developing the class that we have, the signing class,
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: the high school class.
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: And remember what this was rated was just portal alone.
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: Portal alone.
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: So, according to Bill Conley, fifteenth in the transfer portal.
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: But the collection of 'all with that top five signing
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: class and then the other players should still have plenty
- 1:38:07Speaker 5: of newcomers, be it whether by the portal or by
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: the incoming freshmen, as guys who may be able to
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: contribute right away. And that's one thing Sark has talked about,
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: is having some of those young guys, even though they're
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: drinking from a fire hose, a chance for them to
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: contribute once they get more comfortable with the season. All right,
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: we'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: program here from UFCU Dish falk Field on sports Radio
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
