- 0:00Speaker 1: Does Dallas stand for the.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Dallas Wings or does it stand for dumb ass?
- 0:08Speaker 1: Nico?
- 0:08Speaker 2: We get a media availability and that did not allow
- 0:12Speaker 2: cameras for recording devices. Mavericks general manager, Good afternoon.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good afternoon, Craig. How about that? Dumbfounded?
- 0:21Speaker 3: When I saw the report that Nico Harrison was holding
- 0:25Speaker 3: a meeting with select members of the Dallas media, but
- 0:28Speaker 3: they could not record it. They couldn't bring tape recorders,
- 0:30Speaker 3: they couldn't record it with their phone, they couldn't video
- 0:32Speaker 3: record it.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I can't believe that.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Here we are a month, two months removed from the
- 0:38Speaker 3: Leucodonta's trade, and Nico Harrison still does not get it.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I mean, it just screams insecurity, Craig, It screams of
- 0:45Speaker 3: This team is trying to defend their actions. But guess what,
- 0:49Speaker 3: you can't defend it. You've lost the trade, you've lost
- 0:52Speaker 3: the fan base. But they keep doing things that makes
- 0:55Speaker 3: it worse and worse. I can't believe it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 2: The thing I guess that really gets me is what
- 1:04Speaker 2: I'm not understanding about this is that.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Surely, surely he.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And the Dumont family and all of that, Patrick Dumont
- 1:14Speaker 2: and the rest of the ownership group and all that stuff.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Surely they understand now if they didn't initially, how horrible
- 1:25Speaker 2: this has become in terms of public relations, for the organization,
- 1:29Speaker 2: for the fan base, all those things.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And even if even.
- 1:34Speaker 2: If your idea was just to try to make money
- 1:37Speaker 2: off the whole thing, and he really didn't care about
- 1:39Speaker 2: the players, which that seems to be screaming the message
- 1:42Speaker 2: coming from them. But even if that is indeed the case,
- 1:47Speaker 2: wouldn't you want to do something to at least put
- 1:53Speaker 2: a little damage control on it? And maybe the damage
- 1:55Speaker 2: is irreparable now, But if you thought it couldn't get worse,
- 2:01Speaker 2: it gets worse with a thing like this where somebody says, yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I'll meet with some members of the media, but there's
- 2:06Speaker 2: to be no recording of this, and uh and no photography.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And and none of that. What's the point I mean,
- 2:15Speaker 1: if you're.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Maybe he's he's you know, with whatever some members of
- 2:21Speaker 2: the media to explain, So, does that mean that they
- 2:24Speaker 2: in turn are not allowed to write about that or
- 2:27Speaker 2: talk about that on the air or on camera or whatever.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Is that what that means? If so, what's the point
- 2:35Speaker 2: of even having that meeting? Because if you're thinking that
- 2:39Speaker 2: maybe somewhere down the line that that a columnist or
- 2:44Speaker 2: whoever is in there is going to do you a
- 2:47Speaker 2: solid by not bashing you.
- 2:50Speaker 1: That's that's silly in its own right. So anyway, I
- 2:54Speaker 1: when I saw that, I was.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Like, really so because maybe this is on a media
- 3:01Speaker 2: level kind of like what they did last week. And
- 3:05Speaker 2: here's what I mean by that cameraon I listen. I
- 3:09Speaker 2: understand the motivation behind doing the tribute video to Luka Doncic.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think it would have made them look worse if
- 3:22Speaker 2: they just ignored it. So I think they had to
- 3:26Speaker 2: do that, and it was really well done what they
- 3:32Speaker 2: I don't know if they were expecting this, but whether
- 3:34Speaker 2: they were or not, the unexpected consequence for a lot
- 3:37Speaker 2: of people, it just made it worse for fans a
- 3:40Speaker 2: lot of times. In a lot of cases, it just
- 3:43Speaker 2: kind of inflamed their passions all the more. You can't
- 3:45Speaker 2: really control it at that point. If you're the Mavericks,
- 3:48Speaker 2: they didn't really have a choice. They had to do
- 3:50Speaker 2: the tribute video, even though it was going to make
- 3:52Speaker 2: people a lot of angrier.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Well, in this case, it's.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Like, maybe we can, you know, do a little damage
- 4:02Speaker 2: control and have Nico explain it to some of the
- 4:09Speaker 2: media that covers the team extensively or whatever, the select media, whatever,
- 4:13Speaker 2: explain it. But all that's going to do is backfire
- 4:16Speaker 2: on the rest of the media who aren't invited, who
- 4:19Speaker 2: don't get to write about, who don't get to record it.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So that's the unintended consequence there. So I just I
- 4:27Speaker 2: keep seeing them blow one toe off of their foot
- 4:30Speaker 2: time with this, with every move they make. It's it's
- 4:36Speaker 2: unfathomable to me that an organization with professional people, whether
- 4:41Speaker 2: you whether you know basketball or not, and who is
- 4:44Speaker 2: it Patrick Dumont Cameron who readily admitted to not knowing
- 4:49Speaker 2: you know whatever for a pick and roll from picking
- 4:51Speaker 2: his nose or whatever. Even if you don't know basketball,
- 4:56Speaker 2: you've got to have some sense of under nderstanding what
- 5:01Speaker 2: moves like this are going to do in terms of
- 5:04Speaker 2: alienating your fan base, your local media, and even some
- 5:07Speaker 2: national media.
- 5:09Speaker 3: It's almost like they want to control the narrative by saying, Okay,
- 5:12Speaker 3: we're gonna have these select people come in, these reporters
- 5:15Speaker 3: that we know, but we want to tell the story
- 5:18Speaker 3: our own way. But the thing is, Craig, you can't
- 5:20Speaker 3: do that the story's been told, and Nico Harrison and
- 5:24Speaker 3: Rick Welts, the CEO, who also spoke with this select
- 5:27Speaker 3: group of Dallas media, they don't understand it that you've.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Already lost to trade.
- 5:31Speaker 3: No matter how many times you explain it, you're not
- 5:34Speaker 3: gonna be able to make it make sense.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:36Speaker 3: It's like when someone cheats on their partner and they
- 5:38Speaker 3: keep coming back with different excuses in time and time again,
- 5:41Speaker 3: you know you've already cheated. It's too late, You've already
- 5:45Speaker 3: treated Luca Doncis. It's too late. And in one of
- 5:48Speaker 3: the comments from Rick Welts that and it's funny because
- 5:51Speaker 3: it's screamed Jerry Jones. And I think back to the
- 5:54Speaker 3: last this end of season press conference, and it may
- 5:58Speaker 3: have been even before the season started with Jerry Jones.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I think it was an aux nerd well Jerry Jones
- 6:03Speaker 3: and Stephen Jones and Mike McCarthy, and it may have
- 6:06Speaker 3: been forget. Clarence Still may have asked the question about
- 6:10Speaker 3: can you sense the fan base is now apathetic? And
- 6:14Speaker 3: Stephen Jones said, well, no, look at our season ticket sales.
- 6:17Speaker 3: They've gone up right, which is complete bull crap because
- 6:21Speaker 3: we all know Dallas Cowboys fans are more apathetic than ever.
- 6:24Speaker 3: But Rick Welt said in this media Craig when asked
- 6:28Speaker 3: about you know, the the fiery fans and all of that,
- 6:33Speaker 3: and you know, the Channing fire and Eco and losing
- 6:35Speaker 3: the fan base, and Welt said, well, you know, actually
- 6:38Speaker 3: look at our season ticket reneal Rate. It's gone up.
- 6:40Speaker 3: They don't get it, Craig Welt's, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones.
- 6:43Speaker 3: They don't understand what is happening to the city of
- 6:48Speaker 3: Dallas and how these two franchises are completely losing their
- 6:53Speaker 3: fan base for two separate reasons but also two similar reasons,
- 6:58Speaker 3: and that they're being run by brain dead people.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I just it's just and I didn't think that
- 7:06Speaker 2: it could be made much worse than it has been made,
- 7:12Speaker 2: so it's but apparently it has been.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's why I said, it's.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Unfathomable to meet professional people not understanding the damage that
- 7:24Speaker 2: goes to your organization, whether you're you know, a basketball
- 7:27Speaker 2: purist or no basketball or whatever, but just understanding how
- 7:33Speaker 2: that alienates large groups of people. And now they've you know,
- 7:37Speaker 2: added it to those of the media who are not
- 7:40Speaker 2: allowed to be present for that you know that's you're
- 7:44Speaker 2: not going to win any friends or influence anybody by
- 7:46Speaker 2: doing that. So anyway that's it's made. Let me put
- 7:49Speaker 2: it to you this way, Cameron. It has been well
- 7:52Speaker 2: established on this program that the NBA team you root
- 7:57Speaker 2: for is the Oklahoma City Thunder. Given that to a
- 8:00Speaker 2: long suffering and I do emphasize the words suffering Cowboys fan.
- 8:05Speaker 2: What do you think that fans are like in Dallas
- 8:09Speaker 2: who've been long suffering Cowboys and Navericks fans? What they're
- 8:16Speaker 2: going through now with two owners who continually alienate the
- 8:21Speaker 2: fan base, at least the Rangers. You know, when they
- 8:24Speaker 2: when they stumble over themselves, they try to make it right.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And they made it right in the most obvious way
- 8:31Speaker 2: by winning a world championship in twenty twenty three, So
- 8:34Speaker 2: they bought themselves a few years of grace, I think,
- 8:37Speaker 2: but even with some of.
- 8:39Speaker 1: The moves that they've made in the past.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But this, you know, the Mavericks get to the NBA
- 8:44Speaker 2: Finals a year ago, and I think folks were excited
- 8:47Speaker 2: about what could come with healthy bodies, and then this
- 8:52Speaker 2: deal comes and it just starts to blow everything up.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Can you imagine what it must be like for long
- 8:57Speaker 2: suffering Mavericks and Cowboys fans.
- 8:59Speaker 3: They're mental health must be in the gutter right now, Greg,
- 9:03Speaker 3: And hey, you mentioned you know the Mavericks and Cowboys.
- 9:07Speaker 3: The Stars are completely collapsing right now. They're on a
- 9:10Speaker 3: six game losing streak after looking like one of the
- 9:12Speaker 3: best teams in hockey. And then the Rangers, who after
- 9:15Speaker 3: an offseason of spending, can't hit the baseball. So things
- 9:19Speaker 3: aren't going great in Dallas right now
- 9:20Speaker 1: For the professional sports franchises.
