Latest / Foul Territory / Bryce Harper hurt by fake trade rumors? Ryan Ripken on Orioles new manager, Twins narrow down search
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he said. That's what he said. That's
- 0:03Speaker 1: what he said, that's what he said.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Okay, there's a lot to unpack here, so let's set
- 0:10Speaker 2: this up. Dave Dombrowski end of season presser. It's an
- 0:14Speaker 2: hour plus, he asks. He gets asked one question about
- 0:17Speaker 2: Bryce Harper. He basically said, this wasn't an elite year
- 0:20Speaker 2: for a superstar player. Freddie Freeman caught strays for no reason.
- 0:24Speaker 2: But he's okay, he's in the World Series. He's just
- 0:26Speaker 2: as good as ever. Dave don Browski comes on our
- 0:29Speaker 2: show and says a lot was made about nothing, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: he thinks he's great, and there's absolutely no truth to
- 0:34Speaker 2: bs trade rumors that were floated out there barely even
- 0:38Speaker 2: floated out there, and it ran wild. Bryce actually replies
- 0:44Speaker 2: and said, I've given my all to Philly from the start.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Now there's trade talk. I made every effort to avoid this.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's all I heard in DC with the Nationals. I
- 0:52Speaker 2: hated it. It makes me feel uncomfortable. He spoke to
- 0:56Speaker 2: Matt Gelip, who put a story out in The Athletic.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Harper is hurt by the comments from Dombrowski in the
- 1:02Speaker 2: trade speculation. He also said all players get hurt. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: hurt my wrist this year and missed a month. Of course,
- 1:07Speaker 2: I don't have full year numbers. It's disappointed to hear
- 1:10Speaker 2: me being questioned about my contribution to the team. Just
- 1:13Speaker 2: really hurt by that notion because I love Philly so much.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And he goes on to say, how you know he
- 1:19Speaker 2: didn't put a opt out in there because he even
- 1:22Speaker 2: though he was advised to do so, he wanted them
- 1:25Speaker 2: to know he's going to be there forever. You know,
- 1:27Speaker 2: remember last year there were thoughts that his camp wanted
- 1:31Speaker 2: an extension even though there's a ton of time left.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Scott Boris also spoke I'm paraphrasing a little bit for
- 1:36Speaker 2: Scott's team. That's probably listening. But Scott mostly was okay
- 1:40Speaker 2: with Dombrowski's comments. He just wanted him to include the
- 1:43Speaker 2: fact that he was bothered by a rist issue this year.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Okay, that's fair for.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Dombrowski to say, Hey, he didn't have an elite year.
- 1:49Speaker 2: He also had a rist issue. That's a big deal. Okay,
- 1:52Speaker 2: where are we at here? AJ should Bryce be pissed
- 1:55Speaker 2: at the Phillies? We had Dombrawski on the other day
- 1:58Speaker 2: and he sounded super normal and chill, like I love Bryce,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and I just said that, you know, it was a
- 2:03Speaker 2: one twenty five ops year plus a year versus a
- 2:06Speaker 2: one eighty or whatever he usually puts up.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I don't know what we're pissed about here. Dobrowski never
- 2:12Speaker 3: said he was on the trade block, did he. I
- 2:15Speaker 3: think someone made that up. I don't know what we're
- 2:17Speaker 3: mad about. It wasn't Dombrowski that said it. Dobrowski came
- 2:20Speaker 3: on here, Bryce, come on here and we'll talk about it.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But I mean, he came on here and said there's
- 2:25Speaker 3: absolutely no way they're trading him. He loves Bryce, he
- 2:28Speaker 3: wants Bryce in Philly. I don't understand what we're mad
- 2:31Speaker 3: about here. I wish at one point, Mike, you know, Career,
- 2:34Speaker 3: the GM or President of Baseball officer, to come on
- 2:36Speaker 3: and said, yeah about me. The way Dombrowski talked about
- 2:39Speaker 3: Bryce Harper, it was pretty awesome to hear someone talk
- 2:42Speaker 3: about another player like that. So I don't know why
- 2:44Speaker 3: we're so angry. I mean, CROs you're in Philly, you're
- 2:46Speaker 3: a boots on the ground there. But man, I don't
- 2:48Speaker 3: understand what Bryce is so mad about It feels like
- 2:50Speaker 3: he got mad over something that was taken out of
- 2:52Speaker 3: context and not really if you listen to what Dombrowski said,
- 2:55Speaker 3: I don't kind of agree with why he's so mad.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I think he got a little bit of miss information.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I think he heard what Joel Sherman said. I think
- 3:04Speaker 4: it was on a podcast. He didn't say, oh, he's
- 3:07Speaker 4: like I see him getting traded here. He's just saying
- 3:11Speaker 4: that there's speculation that he could.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It wasn't.
- 3:13Speaker 4: It was very very tame and Dombrowski obviously he came
- 3:18Speaker 4: on here and we didn't say anything about, hey, do
- 3:22Speaker 4: you think he's should be traded? Dombrowski brought it up himself,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and so I think it's I think Matt Gilb got
- 3:31Speaker 4: him at the right time, got him maybe some misinformation,
- 3:35Speaker 4: or maybe maybe Bryce was listening to the wrong things
- 3:39Speaker 4: or like going on speculation things. I think there is
- 3:43Speaker 4: nobody that could have come to Philadelphia and endeared themselves
- 3:47Speaker 4: more to Philly fans. I think when Dombrowski, I know,
- 3:51Speaker 4: when Dombrowski came on a lot of people in Philly
- 3:55Speaker 4: were like, Okay, that's nice. I'm glad he's not being traded.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Now it gets re sparked back up by Gelb talking
- 4:03Speaker 4: to him, and you know, I think now it's time
- 4:07Speaker 4: for Dave Dombrowski to finally bury the hatchet here and
- 4:11Speaker 4: just say, hey, you know what, here's what was going on.
- 4:15Speaker 4: There was never any trade speculation, that was never from me.
- 4:19Speaker 4: A lot of things have, like he said when he
- 4:21Speaker 4: came on, kind of taken the you know, a life
- 4:24Speaker 4: of its own. Comments that he said a short snippet
- 4:28Speaker 4: in an hour long conversation.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And my favorite part of it was, which.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I don't think a lot of people necessarily read, was
- 4:36Speaker 4: Boris said, you gotta let harpery meaning Ferrari Harpery. When
- 4:42Speaker 4: Boris uses those play on words type of things, you
- 4:46Speaker 4: gotta let him, you gotta let him eat. He said,
- 4:48Speaker 4: maybe get somebody behind him so the tea he doesn't
- 4:52Speaker 4: have the second least number of pitches in his own
- 4:54Speaker 4: scene of anybody in baseball. Like he's saying, hey, you
- 5:00Speaker 4: know what, if you didn't think he did well, maybe
- 5:02Speaker 4: get a number four hitter that's gonna hit behind Harper
- 5:05Speaker 4: to be able to protect him in the lineup, which
- 5:07Speaker 4: I thought was a cool statement by Boris. Selling another
- 5:10Speaker 4: one of his clients that probably is gonna get four
- 5:13Speaker 4: million dollars.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they didn't get good production out of
- 5:19Speaker 2: the cleanup spot. You can look at the numbers, right
- 5:21Speaker 2: both ops or if you wait the numbers, it's even
- 5:23Speaker 2: worse for Philly. So okay, that's fine, that's fair.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Rights did come on he came on our show and
- 5:29Speaker 3: staid the trade rumors weren't true. I don't understand, like
- 5:32Speaker 3: he literally came on here and said they were not true.
- 5:35Speaker 1: He did. He he didn't have What else does he
- 5:36Speaker 1: have to say?
- 5:37Speaker 3: He came on here and he had Remember, he pulled
- 5:40Speaker 3: out a piece of paper at one point, was like
- 5:44Speaker 3: and started reading out all these things, like what else
- 5:47Speaker 3: does he He doesn't have to say anything. Plus, you
- 5:49Speaker 3: know what, Brice, you have ten to five. They can't
- 5:52Speaker 3: trade you, So just tell him I'm.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Not going anywhere. And it shut. Nolan Arnado did it
- 5:58Speaker 1: if you have send trade.
- 6:00Speaker 2: The no trade clause with the Phillies, right, So he
- 6:04Speaker 2: said he hasn't spoken to owner or GM or present
- 6:07Speaker 2: base boss, whatever you want to call. But isn't this
- 6:10Speaker 2: a super simple dave on the line? Hey, Bryce, I
- 6:14Speaker 2: went and cleared it up on Foul Territory right after.
- 6:17Speaker 2: That's really the only show you should be watching and
- 6:19Speaker 2: paying attention to daily. You should go on that show too. Anyway,
- 6:26Speaker 2: we're not trading you. We love you. I reiterated that
- 6:29Speaker 2: if you want, I can get the Foul Territory team
- 6:31Speaker 2: behind the scenes to cut the clip and send it
- 6:33Speaker 2: to you as well. But in all seriousness, I have
- 6:37Speaker 2: the quote that started the trade speculation, and this is
- 6:40Speaker 2: how the news cycle is. I don't want to say dangerous,
- 6:44Speaker 2: but full of crap nowadays. Joel Sherman is an insider.
- 6:48Speaker 2: He reports on news, trades, et cetera, just like Ken does,
- 6:52Speaker 2: just like many others in the industry do, right, That's
- 6:55Speaker 2: one part of the job. Those insiders also are commentators
- 6:59Speaker 2: and have opinion, and they're allowed to have opinions. They
- 7:01Speaker 2: write columns, they go on shows. Sometimes we bring on
- 7:05Speaker 2: Ken and ask him for news. Sometimes we ask what
- 7:07Speaker 2: his opinion is. That's fine either way. Joel went on
- 7:11Speaker 2: his Yankee podcast and said about Bryce, I think I
- 7:15Speaker 2: think this is a player that is angry about the
- 7:18Speaker 2: contract he's currently operating under. Would I be one hundred
- 7:22Speaker 2: percent shocked if Bryce Harper gets traded this offseason. No,
- 7:27Speaker 2: so all he said was in his opinion, probably based
- 7:30Speaker 2: on last year wanting an extension. He thinks he doesn't
- 7:33Speaker 2: like the contract and wants to move on. So he
- 7:34Speaker 2: actually said he thinks Bryce wants to go and that's
- 7:37Speaker 2: why he doesn't feel one hundred percent shocked. Now, he
- 7:41Speaker 2: might have felt eighty percent shocked, but not one hundred
- 7:43Speaker 2: percent shocked if he gets traded. No report, no talking
- 7:47Speaker 2: to anyone on that front right now, fast forward. All
- 7:51Speaker 2: of a sudden, a lot of the aggregator world looks
- 7:54Speaker 2: at this and says, oh, here's an insider saying that
- 7:56Speaker 2: he's going to get traded.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Come on.
- 7:59Speaker 2: So it's a poor job on many people's case, including
- 8:03Speaker 2: whoever was giving that information to Bryce, or if Bryce
- 8:06Speaker 2: is seeing that online whatever social media accounts he's following AJC.
- 8:10Speaker 2: That's the part where I think we're lost in translation.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Go directly to the source, go to the president baseball
- 8:16Speaker 2: op go to the owner, and like you said, it
- 8:18Speaker 2: doesn't even matter anyway with the no trade clause. But
- 8:20Speaker 2: on top of that, we're taking one sentence from an
- 8:25Speaker 2: opinion podcast and we're turning it into this. What I
- 8:29Speaker 2: fear is that we're going to run into front office
- 8:34Speaker 2: members being so careful about every word they say. I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 2: Dave Dombrowski we mentioned is a real talker and he
- 8:39Speaker 2: didn't say anything wrong. Now you're gonna have front office
- 8:42Speaker 2: dudes even more worried about any freaking word that they say.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Because they're worried it turns into this. This episode of
- 8:51Speaker 2: FT is brought to you by Hule Cheers. We got

- 9:51Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we already have enough GM speak, don't you.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I mean, all these gems that come on here, there's
- 9:55Speaker 3: been a few that don't. But how many of these
- 9:57Speaker 3: gems do we get on here that say they give
- 9:59Speaker 3: you the perfect long and they just have a lot
- 10:02Speaker 3: of words.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I don't ever really say anything or give you any opinion.
- 10:04Speaker 1: We don't want that. And the guys that.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Are good again, Dave Dombrowski came on here and he
- 10:09Speaker 3: laid it flat on the table and said, Bryce is
- 10:11Speaker 3: not going to be traded.
- 10:12Speaker 1: We love Bryce.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I didn't need to say anything else. Bryce, We're sorry,
- 10:16Speaker 3: but I don't know, I don't know what else you
- 10:19Speaker 3: can say. And yeah, sure, right, Scott. People take one
- 10:23Speaker 3: sentence and it makes for clicks, and everybody wants to click.
- 10:25Speaker 3: So hey, Bryce Harper's gonna get traded. Click click look lolick,
- 10:28Speaker 3: look look, look look click. Every person in Philly freaks
- 10:30Speaker 3: out what and then Bryce probably he gets a text
- 10:33Speaker 3: from somebody. I don't know if this is true or not,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and this is my Someone probably texts him and says, hey, Bryce,
- 10:37Speaker 3: do you hear you get the rumors you're getting traded?
- 10:39Speaker 3: And Bryce is probably like, what the hell are we
- 10:41Speaker 3: talking about? And then he didn't even read the article,
- 10:43Speaker 3: he just saw the headline and then boom, next thing
- 10:45Speaker 3: you know, he's got to go on Matt Gelve's show
- 10:47Speaker 3: and defend himself, which I appreciate him doing that, but
- 10:51Speaker 3: I mean.
- 10:51Speaker 1: He's not getting traded. Bryce.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You have ten to five plus, you have Scott Morris.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Maybe Scott if he gets you traded, I'll get you
- 10:55Speaker 3: another three hundred million. But you're not getting traded.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Thank you. He got duped by clickbait. It takes one
- 11:03Speaker 2: phone call and I'm sure it's happening.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure you can get Sherman's number two if
- 11:07Speaker 3: he needs it. I'm pretty sure that Scott probably has it.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Scott Boris probably.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'm sure there's been back and forth already, but again
- 11:14Speaker 2: it was only on a pot. He wasn't reporting it.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Last word crats Bryce subscribe to foul territory and you'll
- 11:19Speaker 4: find out all you need to find out. Guy, just
- 11:21Speaker 4: hit the subscribe button. Bryce does it. Everyone else can
- 11:24Speaker 4: do it.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Bryce will come on someday. But well, I think I
- 11:29Speaker 2: think now is the time. But anyway, we'll get to
- 11:31Speaker 2: it in the off season coming up next.
- 11:33Speaker 3: The Orioles have only somebody that played with him.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Who was that? You don't have anybody in this show
- 11:43Speaker 1: that's played with Bryce Harper.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Pap.
- 11:51Speaker 2: What are you talking about? Yeah, I don't think that
- 11:58Speaker 2: one's gonna go well, although ratings would go through the
- 12:01Speaker 2: roof if we bring them on for that right the
- 12:03Speaker 2: official public ten year later apology or something like that. Anyway, Hey,
- 12:09Speaker 2: your thoughts on the Twins manager process here. So Dan
- 12:12Speaker 2: Hayes reported over the weekend that they're likely down before
- 12:15Speaker 2: there's still a chance World Series ends. They look into
- 12:17Speaker 2: some other guys maybe involved in the series right now,
- 12:19Speaker 2: but it sounds like James Rowson, Ryan Flaherty, Scott Servis,
- 12:23Speaker 2: Derek Sheling for the four.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Derek Shelton would be Roco Baldelli, wasn't he there was
- 12:30Speaker 3: his bench coach. Wouldn't that be just like going back
- 12:31Speaker 3: to Roco kind of sort of maybe. I don't know,
- 12:39Speaker 3: Ralson was they didn't like them enough to keep them.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Ralson was their hitting coach. I mean they signed him
- 12:43Speaker 3: an extension and fired them, so they didn't like them
- 12:45Speaker 3: that much. Roson was the someone. Yeah, Rolson was their
- 12:49Speaker 3: hitting coach for a while.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I mean Scott Servis, what did he do to deserve it?
- 12:53Speaker 3: I mean he got fired from his best friend. I mean,
- 12:57Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's it's an interesting names.
- 12:59Speaker 3: You would think you would think the twin, like I
- 13:01Speaker 3: know Nick Punto was on this list, but he didn't
- 13:02Speaker 3: make the cut.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I mean, Ryan Flaherty might be nice. He's a new guy.
- 13:06Speaker 3: He's been around, he's been on winning teams, and I
- 13:08Speaker 3: like Ryan Flaherty, So I don't know, maybe try him.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Try something different.
- 13:12Speaker 3: You got a team that's not going to probably compete,
- 13:14Speaker 3: right because I'm not gonna spend money, So why not?
- 13:16Speaker 1: I don't know, what do I know?
- 13:19Speaker 2: Hey, Ryan Ripton joins us right now, CEO of Ryan
- 13:21Speaker 2: Ripkin Media, and he's live Tuesdays through Thursdays on his
- 13:25Speaker 2: own YouTube show. I catch it frequently for a little
- 13:27Speaker 2: dose of what's going on with Baltimore. First time on here, Ryan,
- 13:30Speaker 2: great to have you on. How you doing.
- 13:32Speaker 5: I appreciate you guys having me on and always with news.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I wish that this news of the new manager broke,
- 13:39Speaker 5: you know, between nine to five, But that's not how
- 13:42Speaker 5: this works in the baseball world, right.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Oh, don't get me started. For many off seasons you
- 13:49Speaker 2: get the same situation. Ryan, I'll let you in on
- 13:52Speaker 2: a little secret. Okay. Owners like to have cocktails late
- 13:57Speaker 2: at night on weekends. Often we see the trades, and
- 14:00Speaker 2: not trades, it's more signings that happened. Like last offseason.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You can look, half the signings happened at like twelve
- 14:06Speaker 2: thirty on a Friday or Saturday night, East Coast time.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So you're catching the owners at nine to thirty West Coast,
- 14:14Speaker 2: maybe having a cocktail or an East Coast guy like that.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So anyway, look for that. It's something that bothers us frequently.
- 14:20Speaker 2: But let's get into that news story that broke late
- 14:23Speaker 2: Sunday night. Craig Albernaz is going to be the new
- 14:26Speaker 2: manager of the Orioles at age forty two. What do
- 14:29Speaker 2: you know and do you like the move?
- 14:32Speaker 5: Well, definitely, it wasn't on anyone's Bengo card when you
- 14:35Speaker 5: got the news last night late that the Orioles were
- 14:39Speaker 5: in the agreement, are finalizing the deal. Now, if you
- 14:43Speaker 5: take a step back, fans reaction is going to be, well,
- 14:47Speaker 5: who is Craig Albernaz? You know, where is this veteran
- 14:50Speaker 5: presence manager or why haven't we heard anything from him? Now?
- 14:54Speaker 5: If we continue to roll it back the baseball side
- 14:57Speaker 5: of it, understanding Craig's background, a guy that came from
- 15:01Speaker 5: the Rays obviously with the Guardians, and in between that
- 15:04Speaker 5: with the San Francisco Giants, and a guy with an
- 15:08Speaker 5: organization that is focused on little things and yes, metric
- 15:13Speaker 5: based with the Rays and has a great reputation. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 5: that was the things that were jumping off the page
- 15:18Speaker 5: to me. Everyone I've talked to about him really likes
- 15:23Speaker 5: him as a communicator, but as well as a guy
- 15:25Speaker 5: that they believe is kind of that next up and
- 15:28Speaker 5: coming manager. And so when I was talking about this
- 15:31Speaker 5: for the last weeks here on my show was the
- 15:35Speaker 5: Orioles could have gone a couple different ways. I didn't
- 15:38Speaker 5: see the veteran manager just because completely old school. You
- 15:43Speaker 5: gotta let then that manager, the old school veteran manager
- 15:47Speaker 5: manage how he wants to, and I wasn't sure if
- 15:50Speaker 5: that was going to be a fit for the front office.
- 15:52Speaker 5: And then it was up and coming next manager, or
- 15:56Speaker 5: you stay with Tony Manzolino, And we got that answer
- 16:00Speaker 5: last night. And now it's going to be a wait
- 16:02Speaker 5: and see. There's gonna be a lot of pros and cons,
- 16:05Speaker 5: but those were all kind of my initial thoughts and reactions.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Well, why not go old school, Brian? Why not go
- 16:12Speaker 3: you kind of had the new school guy in Brandon Hyde.
- 16:14Speaker 3: We saw how that ended up. They didn't win a
- 16:16Speaker 3: playoff game. Why not go old school?
- 16:19Speaker 1: Why not?
- 16:19Speaker 3: I mean, they're not going to bring back Buck Showalter,
- 16:21Speaker 3: but somebody that's been around and managed before and has
- 16:24Speaker 3: the experience a little bit that can give a little
- 16:27Speaker 3: pushback to michae Elias because Michael Olias, as you know
- 16:30Speaker 3: there in Baltimore, has taken some heat for some of
- 16:32Speaker 3: the things that have happened.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So is this a case of, hey, we don't want
- 16:35Speaker 1: to go old school.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Craig will be on the same teams as Michael Olias
- 16:39Speaker 3: and they can work together and try to figure this
- 16:41Speaker 3: thing out how to make this team good again.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Well, it's an interesting question, you know, and because you're
- 16:48Speaker 5: looking at what was the questions around this team this
- 16:50Speaker 5: past year was how does this young team take that
- 16:54Speaker 5: next step? Do you need a guy that's in there
- 16:57Speaker 5: that's going to help show them the way or to
- 17:00Speaker 5: get quote unquote more of the old school baseball guys
- 17:03Speaker 5: that can be there and create that experienced, been there
- 17:07Speaker 5: before type of feeling. And I just we know this
- 17:12Speaker 5: now with front offices, when it comes to the management
- 17:16Speaker 5: in the clubhouse, in the locker room, it's different than
- 17:19Speaker 5: it was five years ago, a decade ago, two decades ago,
- 17:23Speaker 5: where there can't be as much contention as there once was.
- 17:27Speaker 5: You got you kind of have to be aligned philosophically.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Now.
- 17:31Speaker 5: One thing I want to say for michae Elias is
- 17:35Speaker 5: I do believe this past year he sat there and
- 17:38Speaker 5: went what we have done hasn't worked, and we need
- 17:42Speaker 5: to try to be more open minded. And the number
- 17:45Speaker 5: one thing that the Orioles need, and it didn't matter
- 17:48Speaker 5: who the manager was gonna be, was you philosophically, in
- 17:52Speaker 5: my opinion, had to get better at developing these young
- 17:57Speaker 5: guys and then teaching them how to go and win
- 18:00Speaker 5: the games. When things get tough, and I think that's
- 18:03Speaker 5: a philosophical thing, whether you bring this manager in or
- 18:06Speaker 5: it's being taught. But what's happening is there were so
- 18:10Speaker 5: many guys in the Oriols it felt like they didn't
- 18:12Speaker 5: have the exact role. There was a lot of the
- 18:15Speaker 5: same type of hitters we know in a lineup. You
- 18:18Speaker 5: need the boppers, you need the guys that get on base,
- 18:20Speaker 5: and above all, you need to find a way. And
- 18:23Speaker 5: I think that there was a little bit of confusion.
- 18:25Speaker 5: I think that there was a little bit of uncertainty
- 18:28Speaker 5: with a lot of the guys because the one thing
- 18:30Speaker 5: this Orioles team does not lack, it does not lack talent,
- 18:33Speaker 5: but I think philosophically it lacks what do we need
- 18:37Speaker 5: to do to take the next step. So I think
- 18:39Speaker 5: they're taking the bet that Craig Albernaz, young coach that
- 18:44Speaker 5: is coming from the Guardians, who all they do is
- 18:47Speaker 5: find ways to win, that he's going to connect with
- 18:50Speaker 5: these young guys and help Michaelias in this front office
- 18:53Speaker 5: get the most out of them going in the twenty
- 18:55Speaker 5: twenty six.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Hey, if you want to take care of yourself, your
- 19:01Speaker 2: body and everything that goes into health, fitness, and nutrition.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Superpower provides crafts what I would call the pro experience
- 19:09Speaker 2: for the everyday person, one.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Hundred percent super easy. You get your lab test results
- 19:15Speaker 4: back and you can streamline exactly what you're deficient in.
- 19:19Speaker 4: You can say, Okay, this is what the results told me.
- 19:23Speaker 4: I'm going to go ahead and maybe look for that
- 19:26Speaker 4: in a supplement which they provide. I'm gonna go ahead
- 19:29Speaker 4: and look at that in my daily workouts, which they
- 19:32Speaker 4: give so many different ideas of how to make sure
- 19:36Speaker 4: your deficiencies become some of your superpowers.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Superpower used to cost four ingre ninety nine dollars. Head
- 19:43Speaker 2: to superpower dot com right now to learn more and
- 19:45Speaker 2: lock in the special one hundred ninety nine dollars price
- 19:48Speaker 2: while it lasts. After you sign up, they'll ask you
- 19:50Speaker 2: how you heard about them, and make sure you mentioned
- 19:52Speaker 2: ft your biology decoded, your blueprint activated with Superpower.
- 19:58Speaker 4: So you say that about Michaelias, does that mean Michael
- 20:01Speaker 4: Oias expects this team to score seven runs a game
- 20:04Speaker 4: to win? Like did Michaelias look at himself and say, oh, shoot,
- 20:10Speaker 4: we had some injuries. There's just no way that we
- 20:12Speaker 4: can or is he going ah, whatever, you know, we
- 20:15Speaker 4: got Chicano. I really thought he was going to be
- 20:18Speaker 4: an all star, like he had money to spend, and
- 20:21Speaker 4: in my opinion, he flushed it.
- 20:24Speaker 5: So, yes, you can go back and look at it.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Did the Orioles do a good job of bolstering their
- 20:30Speaker 5: pitching staff? I think we know the answer in twenty
- 20:34Speaker 5: twenty five emphatic No, I think last year. What I
- 20:38Speaker 5: want to at least point out ownership's first full off
- 20:41Speaker 5: season was this past year. Yes, they took over and
- 20:44Speaker 5: everyone was excited in twenty twenty four, but they didn't
- 20:47Speaker 5: even get the look at it all. Right, well, what
- 20:49Speaker 5: do we have to do?
- 20:51Speaker 1: You know? Now?
- 20:53Speaker 5: The pressure and even the one thing going back to
- 20:55Speaker 5: that manager talk of why I was wondering who it
- 20:58Speaker 5: was going to be. I think job is in Michael
- 21:02Speaker 5: isaa's decision on who he hires. The pressure really is
- 21:05Speaker 5: on the front office because the expectation for this Oriols
- 21:09Speaker 5: team now in twenty twenty six, right, it's not to oh, well,
- 21:12Speaker 5: let's just let's develop these guys and let's get better. No, no, no,
- 21:16Speaker 5: it's you got to compete to win the AL East again,
- 21:19Speaker 5: because you did it in twenty three. You were a
- 21:21Speaker 5: top team in twenty four where you were holding on
- 21:23Speaker 5: for dear life and made the postseason. You got to
- 21:26Speaker 5: find a way to get over the hump. And I
- 21:28Speaker 5: do believe that they are looking at all different components,
- 21:31Speaker 5: and I think the one thing that they have to
- 21:33Speaker 5: no matter what, is they have to over expect, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 5: all the injuries that can have happen in the pitching world.
- 21:42Speaker 5: And I do believe they're going to be extremely aggressive
- 21:45Speaker 5: in the pitching department. What that looks like, you know,
- 21:48Speaker 5: I wish I had the crystal ball that that's gonna
- 21:50Speaker 5: say they're gonna go out and get a top end guy,
- 21:52Speaker 5: They're going to make a trade. But the reality is
- 21:56Speaker 5: there are three guys right now in that staff that
- 21:59Speaker 5: for me, on the Oriols you can count on or
- 22:02Speaker 5: who you expect. Kyle Bradish is gonna be there if
- 22:05Speaker 5: he's healthy. Trevor Rodgers looked really good. You hope he
- 22:09Speaker 5: can implement that. And then Dean Kramer, because he eats innings,
- 22:12Speaker 5: he's been there. You can remove the month of April
- 22:15Speaker 5: for Dean Kramer. His numbers look insanely better. And then
- 22:19Speaker 5: I know that they have Wells and you have Grayson
- 22:21Speaker 5: Rodriguez and I love Grayson. Unfortunately, the biggest thing Grayson's
- 22:25Speaker 5: got to be healthy. So you can't expect that Grayson's
- 22:28Speaker 5: gonna be ready. So you got to go and get
- 22:30Speaker 5: three or four arms. So this offseason, the most pressure
- 22:34Speaker 5: is on Michaelias, but also this Baltimore Oriols team, Craig
- 22:38Speaker 5: Albernaz has to be ready for this team is expected
- 22:41Speaker 5: to win, and not just we're gonna get over five hundred, no, no, no,
- 22:46Speaker 5: you got to make some noise and get a postseason
- 22:48Speaker 5: victory on top of it.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Ryan, you mentioned the pitching. The guy who leads that
- 22:53Speaker 3: pitching for years we thought would be Adley Rutchman. They
- 22:56Speaker 3: signed Basaio Basalalo to the contract extension and he's a catcher.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Is he a catcher long term?
- 23:02Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 23:03Speaker 3: But you mentioned development, like the biggest thing. When I
- 23:05Speaker 3: look at the Orioles, they had Mayo, they had er Said,
- 23:08Speaker 3: they had Retchman, they had Henderson, they have Holiday, they
- 23:11Speaker 3: have all these guys Westbird, but none of them have
- 23:14Speaker 3: become a gunner.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Probably is the exception of this.
- 23:17Speaker 3: I'll leave Gunner out of this, but none of these
- 23:19Speaker 3: guys have taken that next step to be the superstar
- 23:22Speaker 3: that the Orioles for years. We're not trading this guy.
- 23:24Speaker 3: We're not gonna trade this guy. We're not gonna trade
- 23:26Speaker 3: that guy. And it's all been position players. Is Craig
- 23:29Speaker 3: the guy to help him say, hey, this is how
- 23:31Speaker 3: we take the next step? Is there somebody else that
- 23:33Speaker 3: are gonna bring in to help these guys, because to me, yes,
- 23:36Speaker 3: you can look at the pitching, but the position player
- 23:38Speaker 3: wise hasn't taken the next step. And kind of the
- 23:40Speaker 3: face of that to me is Adley Rutchman, because I
- 23:42Speaker 3: thought he was gonna be an absolute superstar. And now
- 23:45Speaker 3: they have Asaiyo who they brought in as a catcher
- 23:47Speaker 3: and they signed him. What's Adley's future and how can
- 23:50Speaker 3: they get these guys to take the next step position
- 23:51Speaker 3: player wise?
- 23:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that that is probably the biggest headline
- 23:57Speaker 5: if we're gonna to really focus on and be specific.
- 24:00Speaker 5: And I said this last year going into twenty twenty five,
- 24:04Speaker 5: with all of the question marks around the pitching staff,
- 24:06Speaker 5: how would they hold up? And we know, you give
- 24:08Speaker 5: up five six runs a game, you're probably not gonna
- 24:11Speaker 5: win a lot of games. That's just the nature of
- 24:13Speaker 5: the business. But My motto last year was you go
- 24:18Speaker 5: as far as this young core takes you, and the
- 24:20Speaker 5: oriel strength last year needed to be their offense, and
- 24:24Speaker 5: it was too inconsistent. Whether it was guys being injured,
- 24:27Speaker 5: which are things that you can't control, or just in
- 24:30Speaker 5: the moment situationally having to carry your team. No one
- 24:35Speaker 5: stepped up in that manner. You know. I'm still very
- 24:38Speaker 5: bullish on a lot of those guys, you know, Gunner Henderson.
- 24:40Speaker 5: I'm not worried about Gunner at all being around him.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I got an opportunity in the minor leagues to play
- 24:47Speaker 5: with Wan Soda in the Nationals organization, and then I
- 24:49Speaker 5: got to be around Gunner and spring training, especially six
- 24:52Speaker 5: weeks coming out of COVID, where you can just watch
- 24:54Speaker 5: a guy and you kind of have that oh crap moment.
- 24:57Speaker 5: I had that moment for Juan Soto. I still have
- 25:00Speaker 5: that moment for Gunner Henderson. So I think he's going
- 25:02Speaker 5: to elevate his game going to the next year. But
- 25:05Speaker 5: as far as Adli Rutchman's concerned, you know, and a
- 25:08Speaker 5: lot of these young guys, you know, when you come
- 25:11Speaker 5: up through the system and you're told how great you are,
- 25:15Speaker 5: and the Oriols didn't have any hiccups until the midway
- 25:17Speaker 5: through twenty twenty four. For this young nucleus, it tests you,
- 25:21Speaker 5: and I think for these guys, how do you handle
- 25:23Speaker 5: that adversity. I'm buying Adlei Rutchman that he's going to
- 25:27Speaker 5: be able to be that backstop. I think Sam Besillo
- 25:30Speaker 5: is going to play a lot of first base and
- 25:33Speaker 5: he's going to catch as well. But that's a securit
- 25:35Speaker 5: or it's an insurance policy if that's the case an
- 25:38Speaker 5: Adlee doesn't work out. But the biggest thing, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 5: Adley's got to stay healthy. I thought, if he didn't
- 25:44Speaker 5: get hurt in June, we were going to see that resurgence,
- 25:48Speaker 5: But for two years in a row, he's been banged up,
- 25:51Speaker 5: So I'm watching that. I do think, above all, though,
- 25:55Speaker 5: when you're looking at this Orioles team, do you have
- 25:58Speaker 5: a veteran guy in that lineup that you can depend on?
- 26:02Speaker 5: Because right now, when I mentioned earlier, there's a lot
- 26:04Speaker 5: of guys in this lineup that are trying to figure
- 26:06Speaker 5: out who they are. You know, we can go to
- 26:08Speaker 5: the Guardians since Craig Albernaz just came from there. What's
- 26:12Speaker 5: Stephen Kwan's role Stephen Kwan, He's a tough out, he's gritty,
- 26:17Speaker 5: knows how to put the ball in play, makes things happen.
- 26:20Speaker 5: And then Jose Ramirez, what's your job? Get him in?
- 26:23Speaker 1: Do that?
- 26:24Speaker 5: The Orioles don't have their their RBI guys, and they
- 26:27Speaker 5: don't have the guys that can make something happen. So
- 26:30Speaker 5: I think it's a lot of these young guys figuring
- 26:32Speaker 5: it out. But I think they do need one more
- 26:36Speaker 5: big bat in the middle of that order that can
- 26:38Speaker 5: help stabilize them because there are still so many question
- 26:41Speaker 5: marks and so many young players that are trying to
- 26:43Speaker 5: figure out who they are.
- 26:45Speaker 4: I agree with you that I think Gunnar Henderson is
- 26:48Speaker 4: a superstar can still be a superstar. Is there any
- 26:51Speaker 4: way that he doesn't play shortstop for the next three years?
- 26:56Speaker 4: Is there any way that the Orioles have enough because
- 26:59Speaker 4: I've heard it from scouts, I've heard it from different
- 27:02Speaker 4: people in baseball. Maybe he's kind of miscast as a
- 27:06Speaker 4: shortstop and maybe their best shortstop is Holiday. So is
- 27:11Speaker 4: there any way that the Orioles have enough, have enough
- 27:16Speaker 4: gunction to say he's not our shortstopper? Are they fully
- 27:19Speaker 4: committed and I'll lose my job to Gunner Henderson playing short.
- 27:25Speaker 5: I think Gunner Henderson is the shortstop of the future
- 27:28Speaker 5: for the Baltimore Orioles, you know, and I know that
- 27:30Speaker 5: there's that conversation around could you have a better fit,
- 27:34Speaker 5: could Gunner Henderson profile better at third base? And with
- 27:38Speaker 5: that help in that conversation, sure, I think you saw
- 27:42Speaker 5: a lot of strides from Gunner at the end of
- 27:45Speaker 5: this past year of what he can do and what
- 27:47Speaker 5: he can do really really well. I mean defensively, you
- 27:51Speaker 5: can argue that last stretch he was the best defensive
- 27:54Speaker 5: short stop down the stretch. I'm not saying that he is,
- 27:57Speaker 5: but you can argue of how well he was playing
- 28:00Speaker 5: down the stretch. And Gunner physically, you know, I come
- 28:03Speaker 5: from a family where I had a family member that
- 28:07Speaker 5: was a pretty large individual and a lot of people
- 28:10Speaker 5: didn't think that he could play the position because of
- 28:12Speaker 5: his size and his quote unquote abilities. You'd have to
- 28:15Speaker 5: move Gunner Henderson. I think is in that conversation where
- 28:19Speaker 5: where Gunner gets in trouble is not because of his
- 28:21Speaker 5: physical ability. It's continuing to learn how to play the position.
- 28:25Speaker 5: And I would rather take the most physically gifted infielder
- 28:29Speaker 5: and that is still Gunner and continue to work with
- 28:31Speaker 5: him because he can make the most spectacular plays. But
- 28:36Speaker 5: now the goal for him moving forward is can you
- 28:39Speaker 5: make those in between plays more routine? Can you take
- 28:43Speaker 5: the pressure off of the rest of the group in
- 28:45Speaker 5: the infield? And I think that's the evolution of the
- 28:48Speaker 5: young player. But again, I believe the Gunner Henderson should
- 28:53Speaker 5: be the guy, and I think the Orioles are looking
- 28:55Speaker 5: at him and they think he's just scratching the surface
- 28:58Speaker 5: of how good he could be as the future shortstop
- 29:01Speaker 5: for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Right, And first of all, I want to make sure
- 29:04Speaker 3: that people know I did say that Gunner was the
- 29:06Speaker 3: exception to this question of not being developed, because I
- 29:10Speaker 3: think he's a star. So I want people to understand
- 29:12Speaker 3: that I did not say that he was. I did
- 29:15Speaker 3: say the Gunner was the one guy that has taken
- 29:17Speaker 3: that next step. But before we let you go, what's
- 29:20Speaker 3: the one move you'd like to see him make? Is
- 29:22Speaker 3: it starting pitcher, is it veteran position player? Is it
- 29:27Speaker 3: back end bullpen guy? What's the one move? And I
- 29:30Speaker 3: know you're gonna say starting pitcher, So then I'm gonna
- 29:32Speaker 3: ask you to give me a name. Would they make
- 29:33Speaker 3: a trade for Trek Scouble? Would they make a trade
- 29:37Speaker 3: for someone of that level and give up some of
- 29:39Speaker 3: these guys that have possibly been untouchable for so long.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Well, I think every team would say starting pitching, you
- 29:47Speaker 5: need it, you know, So I think the Oriols are
- 29:49Speaker 5: no exception there. I don't see a move for Schooble.
- 29:52Speaker 5: I don't think the Tigers should move him unless it's
- 29:55Speaker 5: a king's ransom. But that's a whole other discussion, because
- 29:58Speaker 5: the Tigers they should be competing next year to try
- 30:01Speaker 5: to go out and win this whole thing. But for
- 30:04Speaker 5: the Orioles, trade partners make sense. I know the Pirates,
- 30:07Speaker 5: you know, when you look at them for their needs
- 30:09Speaker 5: compared to what they have in the pitching staff, would
- 30:12Speaker 5: they finally be willing to give up a guy with control?
- 30:15Speaker 5: I know, Mitch Keller was a name that's been thrown out.
- 30:18Speaker 5: I love his stuff, you know, And it makes sense.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Sandy down in Miami looked like a prime candidate. But
- 30:24Speaker 5: now the Marlins they look like they're turning things around
- 30:27Speaker 5: a lot quicker. So I just don't know if they're
- 30:30Speaker 5: gonna go out and get the top end free agent.
- 30:32Speaker 5: You know, Ranger Suarez is a guy that I really
- 30:35Speaker 5: like because I like guys that know what they're doing
- 30:37Speaker 5: and they can pitch to what they have. The power
- 30:41Speaker 5: guys are great, but you got to know guys that
- 30:43Speaker 5: can go out there and make pitches. So do they
- 30:45Speaker 5: target a guy like that in free agency? And lastly,
- 30:48Speaker 5: though outside of pitching, I think they'd need a veteran bat.
- 30:52Speaker 5: And actually, before now or in the past, you felt
- 30:54Speaker 5: like they had an idea of who their outfield is,
- 30:57Speaker 5: and you really don't. You know the infield set. You're
- 31:00Speaker 5: gonna have Westburg, Holiday Gunner and then probably Kobe Meyo
- 31:03Speaker 5: Sambasaio and see what happens with Ryan Mountcastle. You don't
- 31:08Speaker 5: know who's gonna be in your outfield. Tyler O'Neil has
- 31:11Speaker 5: the option, which I expect him to pick up. I
- 31:14Speaker 5: think you need a guy, a veteran bat that when
- 31:17Speaker 5: things go wrong, he writes the ship. I really do.
- 31:22Speaker 5: And I can't sit there and think that they're gonna
- 31:24Speaker 5: go after a guy like Kyle Tucker, but they need
- 31:29Speaker 5: they need someone to anchor down that lineup because so
- 31:33Speaker 5: many times last year the team would get in a
- 31:35Speaker 5: funk and no one helped them get out of it.
- 31:38Speaker 5: So I would say prioritizing two veteran bats, not just one,
- 31:43Speaker 5: can help this Orioles team hopefully take the next step
- 31:45Speaker 5: because if not, oh goodness in Baltimore. Here hasn't been
- 31:49Speaker 5: pretty this year. If you've been an Orioles fan Ravens fan,
- 31:52Speaker 5: I don't know if the city can take the Orioles
- 31:54Speaker 5: having another down year so to speak, well last.
- 31:58Speaker 2: One, yes or no they sweep the front office if
- 32:01Speaker 2: they don't make the playoffs this year. I mean, they
- 32:03Speaker 2: were the super Tankers and then took an unacceptable in
- 32:06Speaker 2: my mind, step back two missus in a row. After
- 32:09Speaker 2: all the pain in the city had to go through
- 32:11Speaker 2: for the Orioles to get to be the Astros. This
- 32:15Speaker 2: is not what the Astros did for twelve years. Do
- 32:18Speaker 2: they sweep the front office? It sounds like they're not
- 32:19Speaker 2: going to hire a GM under Elias this year, maybe
- 32:22Speaker 2: waiting to see how the year goes.
- 32:25Speaker 5: I would say, unless it's a embarrassing year, I'd say no.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Even if they missed the playoffs, I would still say no.
- 32:31Speaker 5: I think it depends on how it goes. Now, if
- 32:34Speaker 5: they're worse than this past year, then all bets are
- 32:38Speaker 5: off and it could definitely happen. But I think it
- 32:40Speaker 5: would have to take something so embarrassing for the Orioles
- 32:46Speaker 5: to make that move. That's just my gut right now.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Five hundred team, which would be better than this past season.
- 32:52Speaker 2: You think they keep rolling with the group.
- 32:55Speaker 5: I think they roll with the group and then the
- 32:57Speaker 5: seat gets hot.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Oh we're gonna have to bring them back on to
- 33:02Speaker 2: get into that. Yeah.
- 33:04Speaker 3: By the way, speaking of I know you've murt it up.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Have you seen the Doctor Pepper commercial where they have
- 33:09Speaker 3: the coach and they're like hot seats sit on and
- 33:11Speaker 3: they turn on the flame. It was all over college
- 33:13Speaker 3: Football's hilarious. So that's the That's when I when you
- 33:16Speaker 3: said that the seed will get hot. That's all I
- 33:18Speaker 3: could think about when you said that, right, is that commercial?
- 33:21Speaker 5: Well, now now I have a good visualization as well.
- 33:24Speaker 5: Now that's all I'm gonna think about the rest of
- 33:25Speaker 5: the day, to be honest, talk about it any any
- 33:29Speaker 5: time more. Hopefully it's not the case and the birds
- 33:32Speaker 5: are back. Maybe they pulled the Toronto Blue Jays. Well,
- 33:35Speaker 5: if they did this year.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Why not?
- 33:36Speaker 5: You know, I think that'd be that that's the best
- 33:38Speaker 5: case in Baltimore. But we'll take it day by day.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Let's win, let's win, Let's win eighty five games next
- 33:44Speaker 5: year and go for it.
- 33:44Speaker 1: They better find their vlag guerrero then.
- 33:47Speaker 2: That's right, not a core. Yeah, yeah, that would be nice. Yes,
- 33:52Speaker 2: well this was great Ryan, great insight. Great to have
- 33:54Speaker 2: you on here for the first time. Appreciate the time
- 33:56Speaker 2: and everyone that was asking in the chat to check
- 33:59Speaker 2: out his channel much more on this Tuesday through Thursday Live.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Thanks Ryan, I appreciate you, guys.
