- 0:01Speaker 1: Now sevenor presents the Mark Simon Shaw. Hey, it's Monday.
- 0:08Speaker 1: It's gonna be a beautiful sunny day. All right, we'll
- 0:11Speaker 1: bring you all the latest on the White House correspondence dinner.
- 0:14Speaker 1: What happened, all the little details there. We'll get to that.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We'll get to Iran, We'll get to King Charles, we'll
- 0:21Speaker 1: get to Michael Jackson, and a whole lot more coming up.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So you know who should be the most embarrassed about
- 0:30Speaker 1: Saturday night? No, not the Secret Service. I mean they've
- 0:34Speaker 1: got to redo everything. But the guy that should be
- 0:37Speaker 1: the most embarrassed is this mentalist, Oz Pearlman, or some
- 0:42Speaker 1: call him Oz Pearlman. He was the big attraction that night.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The mentalist, he mind reader, unbelieved. So if he's such
- 0:50Speaker 1: a mentalist, why didn't he know this was going to happen?
- 0:55Speaker 1: How does he explain that? So, if you watch the
- 0:58Speaker 1: video just before they rush the president out, you can
- 1:01Speaker 1: see he's sitting on the dais. Milania is next to him,
- 1:04Speaker 1: Caroline Levitt is next to her, and there's a guy
- 1:07Speaker 1: in between standing in between President Trump and Milania annoying
- 1:12Speaker 1: the hell out of him. The Milania seems to be
- 1:14Speaker 1: politely paying attention, but Trump is kind of rolling it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: The guy is showing him a car. That's that's Oz Pearlman,
- 1:21Speaker 1: who's trying to show him a trick ahead of time.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And then the Secret Service rushes in to get the
- 1:27Speaker 1: President out, and you can see some confusion in his face.
- 1:30Speaker 1: That's because he wasn't sure are they trying to rescue
- 1:32Speaker 1: me from this Oz Pearlman or something happening. Now, the
- 1:36Speaker 1: shots were fired in the back of the room. If
- 1:38Speaker 1: you watch the video carefully, the president here's a noise.
- 1:43Speaker 1: He later said, I thought it was a tray of
- 1:45Speaker 1: you know, crashing. I've heard that before. But watch Mlania's eye.
- 1:49Speaker 1: She knew right away what it was. Somehow, she just
- 1:52Speaker 1: knew instantly as soon as she heard those shots, those gunshots.
- 1:54Speaker 1: This was something very serious. And then as you see
- 1:58Speaker 1: in the video, secret Service agents come onto the dais
- 2:02Speaker 1: rush the president off. On the other side, they're rushing
- 2:06Speaker 1: the vice president off. He doesn't want to go. You
- 2:09Speaker 1: actually see them grab his shoulder pad in this suit
- 2:12Speaker 1: and pull them off. And as these guys are doing that,
- 2:15Speaker 1: you see very very seriously armed guys come in, not
- 2:20Speaker 1: Secret Service agents in suits, but guys in full combat gear,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I mean full battle gear with incredibly big long rifles
- 2:32Speaker 1: which they then pointed towards the audience. Now, a lot
- 2:34Speaker 1: of reporters knew what that was. That's the Hawkeye Team.
- 2:38Speaker 1: That's the most serious combat fighters of the Secret Service.
- 2:43Speaker 1: They're the counter terrorism team. So a lot of reporters said,
- 2:47Speaker 1: when they saw those guys come on the stage, that's
- 2:49Speaker 1: when they knew. Because those guys and when they pointed
- 2:52Speaker 1: their rifles into the crowd, they knew that's only done
- 2:55Speaker 1: in the most extreme emergency. So that's when people started
- 2:58Speaker 1: to get a little crazy. Now, if you've ever been
- 3:01Speaker 1: to this dinner, it's a big, massive ballroom. That's why
- 3:06Speaker 1: they do it there. It's about the biggest ballroom in DC.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But they cram the tables together. You know, when you've
- 3:12Speaker 1: been to a wedding where they got the big round
- 3:14Speaker 1: tables at ten or twelve, and some dinners you can
- 3:18Speaker 1: walk in between the tables. But in some of those
- 3:21Speaker 1: weddings or things you go to, they pack the room
- 3:24Speaker 1: so tight that you can't get in between the tables.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You have to kind of like squeeze your way in
- 3:29Speaker 1: between chairs and everyone of somebody's got to actually pull
- 3:33Speaker 1: their chair in to let you get by. That's what
- 3:35Speaker 1: this ballroom was like. It was packed very, very very tight.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You could not easily walk in between the tables. Now,
- 3:43Speaker 1: they left a center aisle up the center of the room.
- 3:47Speaker 1: When you see those agents running up the that's a
- 3:49Speaker 1: center aisle. But outside of that center aisle, on either
- 3:52Speaker 1: side of that center aisle, there were many, many, many
- 3:55Speaker 1: rows of tables packed tight, so it wasn't easy for
- 3:59Speaker 1: the guests to get out. And again you couldn't walk
- 4:02Speaker 1: in between the tables very easily. That's why you saw
- 4:04Speaker 1: Secret Service agents actually jump on the top of the
- 4:07Speaker 1: tables and run on top of the tables. And as
- 4:11Speaker 1: they jumped on tables to run across them, things went
- 4:15Speaker 1: flying and a couple of people actually got hurt people
- 4:18Speaker 1: at the tables. In fact, I think Armie Dylan had
- 4:21Speaker 1: to get some stitches, I mean serious cuts. So it
- 4:25Speaker 1: was absolute chaos. It sounded like this. Now, these are
- 4:35Speaker 1: all reporters, the media people. The room filled with network
- 4:40Speaker 1: correspondence reporters. So being reporters, immediately they want to call
- 4:44Speaker 1: in to their station or their network or their paper
- 4:47Speaker 1: and report. There was almost no self service. One of
- 4:51Speaker 1: the problems is the ballroom in its enormous is in
- 4:56Speaker 1: a basement. You actually go down two flights of stairs
- 4:59Speaker 1: to get to the ballroom. It's a basement, and there's
- 5:01Speaker 1: no cell service, very little cell service down there. A
- 5:05Speaker 1: couple of people manage to get a call out, but
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's not easy at all. And that's why when it
- 5:10Speaker 1: started at about nine o'clock and the networks went to
- 5:13Speaker 1: their correspondence live, they couldn't get cell service. And if
- 5:16Speaker 1: they got who's that little wormy guy, the CNN guy,
- 5:22Speaker 1: what's Brian Stelter, They kept going to him and his
- 5:25Speaker 1: phone kept cutting out and they couldn't get him on
- 5:27Speaker 1: the air. But so some reporters somehow got outside and called.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Best reporting of the night was Sean Hannity, who had
- 5:38Speaker 1: all the inside scoop directly from President Trump because he
- 5:41Speaker 1: got on the phone with President Trump. President Trump was
- 5:44Speaker 1: immediately rushed out of the ballroom. They were in cars
- 5:47Speaker 1: heading back to the White Husper. Seawan called President Trump
- 5:50Speaker 1: sees a Sean Hanny. He takes the call, not only
- 5:52Speaker 1: talks to him, gives him the update, but as he's
- 5:55Speaker 1: arguing with the Secret Service about going back, Trump leaves
- 5:58Speaker 1: the phone on so Sean can hear the whole conversation,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and so he was the best reporter of the night,
- 6:07Speaker 1: talking live on the air to Fox, and the Fox
- 6:10Speaker 1: anchor said, we're talking to Sean. Hannity's at the dinner,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and Sean quickly correctly said, whoa, whoa, I'm not at
- 6:18Speaker 1: the dinner. I wouldn't go to that dinner. I haven't
- 6:20Speaker 1: been to that dinner in a million years. A lot
- 6:21Speaker 1: of people are very proud not to go to that dinner.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It's really a mess. It's not something you really want
- 6:27Speaker 1: to go to. If you're not in the business. It
- 6:31Speaker 1: might be fun because you get to see everybody on CNN,
- 6:34Speaker 1: all the talking heads and anchors and all the famous guests.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You see everybody from CNN and Fox and MSNBC. It's
- 6:43Speaker 1: for you know, for somebody's not in that bit. Ooh. Look,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you've taken selfies with everybody. But if you're actually in
- 6:50Speaker 1: the media business, you see these people all week. You
- 6:52Speaker 1: don't need to go to Washington and see them. But
- 6:56Speaker 1: here's the point. So Sean is listening to the conversation
- 7:00Speaker 1: as they've left the dinner. The President of the White
- 7:04Speaker 1: House Correspondence dinner, went to the podium and said, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: we don't know what we're going to do yet. We
- 7:09Speaker 1: may try to continue the evening. Obviously, it was total chaos.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It would take a while to get everybody seated again,
- 7:15Speaker 1: clean up the mess. But Sean is listening to the
- 7:18Speaker 1: President and they're arguing with the President saying, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 1: he can't go back, he can't go back, and he's saying,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I want to go back. I want to finish this dinner,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I want to do the speech. We're going back. We
- 7:28Speaker 1: got to go back, and the Secret Services saying we
- 7:30Speaker 1: have to. You can't go back until we've swept the room,
- 7:34Speaker 1: absolutely secured the entire room, the entire hotel, made sure
- 7:37Speaker 1: it's safe. And he said, okay, well then I'm going back.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And then this is where he realized he's not going back.
- 7:44Speaker 1: They said to him very carefully, it's going to take
- 7:47Speaker 1: five hours to sweep the hotel, to sweep the ballroom.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It'll be five hours before we can secure the place.
- 7:53Speaker 1: President Trump realizing that means his speech will be at
- 7:56Speaker 1: three in the morning. So that was it. Not going
- 7:59Speaker 1: to do it now. He later got back to the
- 8:02Speaker 1: White house, and he and everybody in the cabinet was there,
- 8:06Speaker 1: all in tuxedos. Look pretty good. They should wear tuxedos
- 8:09Speaker 1: every day. It looked good. But he said they're going
- 8:12Speaker 1: to try to He wants to redo the dinner and
- 8:14Speaker 1: they'll try to redo it within thirty days, try to
- 8:17Speaker 1: reschedule it. Now, here's the problem. This dinner has been
- 8:20Speaker 1: going on for many, many decades, and it takes place
- 8:23Speaker 1: in the Washington Hilton, which is a massive hotel. It's
- 8:27Speaker 1: like a thousand rooms in the Washington Hilton. It's huge.
- 8:30Speaker 1: This is the same hotel where Ronald Reagan got shot.
- 8:32Speaker 1: In fact, for years they used to call it the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Hinckley Hilton. So it's a very bad luck spot for
- 8:39Speaker 1: presidents in the United States. They should never set foot
- 8:42Speaker 1: in this place. But the reason they use it it's
- 8:45Speaker 1: the biggest ballroom. It's the same thing here in New York.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know most of these ballrooms. Plaza Hotel the most
- 8:51Speaker 1: beautiful ballroom, but it only holds three hundred and fifty people.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The Pierre Hotel, that's a beautiful ballroom, it only holds
- 8:57Speaker 1: four hundred and the reason they love the warf the
- 9:00Speaker 1: Waldorff's a big ballroom. You can get twelve hundred people
- 9:03Speaker 1: in there. So when that was closed for a few years,
- 9:07Speaker 1: it was a problem. Where do you do these large dinners. Well,
- 9:10Speaker 1: you could go to the Marriott and Times Square. That's
- 9:13Speaker 1: a big ballroom. You can do two thousand in there.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Not everybody wants to be in Times Square for a
- 9:18Speaker 1: big black tie thing, but if you need to put
- 9:22Speaker 1: two thousand people in the ballroom, you can go there.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And right across the street over there there's the zig Field.
- 9:27Speaker 1: You can get about. You can get about two thousand
- 9:29Speaker 1: in there if you have to. So that's why when
- 9:32Speaker 1: you got a big dinner and you got to have
- 9:34Speaker 1: fifteen hundred, two thousand people, you don't have a lot
- 9:36Speaker 1: of choice. So the Hilton was the ballroom. Now, the
- 9:39Speaker 1: problem is it's a working hotel. It's a hotel that's
- 9:42Speaker 1: open to the public when you're doing that dinner. So
- 9:46Speaker 1: you're doing the dinner in the ballroom down in the
- 9:48Speaker 1: basement and you can check everybody coming in. Meantime, upstairs,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you got one thousand people that are unscreened, unchecked, that
- 9:57Speaker 1: are hotel guests that are in the building, and who
- 10:00Speaker 1: knows how they could get down you know, they may
- 10:03Speaker 1: come in the elevators, but they may take a stairs,
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, service elevator. They're looking around the building. There
- 10:11Speaker 1: was one year people came for this dinner and hanging
- 10:14Speaker 1: out of the front of the hotel was a huge
- 10:18Speaker 1: Palestinian flag. Protesters for Palestine were outside, but apparently a
- 10:24Speaker 1: bunch of them got in and took about ten rooms
- 10:26Speaker 1: in a row so they could hang the flag outside.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So there's always been a security problem there. And the
- 10:33Speaker 1: problem is this dinner. It's one thing, if the president's
- 10:37Speaker 1: coming to your hotel ballroom dinner, you gotta have a
- 10:39Speaker 1: lot of security. But if you're going to have the
- 10:42Speaker 1: president sitting within a few feet of the vice president,
- 10:45Speaker 1: now you've got a huge security problem. You can't lose
- 10:47Speaker 1: both of them. And if in the room, all over
- 10:50Speaker 1: the front of the room, you got the entire cabinet,
- 10:53Speaker 1: the whole cabinet, vice president, the president, a lot of
- 10:57Speaker 1: I mean, you talk about a threat to democracy. You
- 10:59Speaker 1: could take out the whole administration in that room. So
- 11:03Speaker 1: you need the highest level of you need State of
- 11:06Speaker 1: the Union security for this, and they've never had it.
- 11:09Speaker 1: They were still using the same security that they've been
- 11:12Speaker 1: using since the seventies, and that's the problem. You come
- 11:16Speaker 1: in through the lobby. You going all the way down
- 11:18Speaker 1: the lobby. Now there's two stairs that go down into
- 11:20Speaker 1: this basement ballroom. You go down some stairs, there's a landing,
- 11:24Speaker 1: you go down another set of stairs. So at the
- 11:27Speaker 1: first set of stairs, which is way into the lobby,
- 11:30Speaker 1: that's where the checkpoint was with all the Secret Service.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And by the way, the other problem was they really
- 11:36Speaker 1: didn't have any kind of real security as far as
- 11:40Speaker 1: identification to get in. People were showing up just with
- 11:43Speaker 1: their invitation, which didn't have a QR code, it didn't
- 11:47Speaker 1: have anything on it, and some people didn't actually have
- 11:49Speaker 1: the invitation, they had a picture of it in their phone.
- 11:52Speaker 1: And they're letting all these people in and not checking
- 11:54Speaker 1: anybody's ID. So security wasn't tough enough. Anyway, the shooter
- 11:58Speaker 1: comes through the lobby and the Secret Service has set
- 12:02Speaker 1: up at that first staircase. That's where the perimeter is.
- 12:06Speaker 1: A lot of people think they should have set up
- 12:07Speaker 1: outside the hotel and nobody comes into the building without
- 12:11Speaker 1: being checked, but they didn't do that. So anybody can
- 12:13Speaker 1: get in that lobby. The guy's in the lobby and
- 12:16Speaker 1: as he head toward the checkpoint at the top of
- 12:18Speaker 1: those stairs, he starts running like a maniac and tries
- 12:23Speaker 1: to get through there. He fires shots. He hits a
- 12:26Speaker 1: Secret Service agent who luckily was wearing a bulletproof vest
- 12:29Speaker 1: that saved his life. In fact, he's fine. In fact,
- 12:32Speaker 1: he was released from the hospital last night. He's out
- 12:35Speaker 1: of the hospital. They tackle the shooter. Now you see
- 12:40Speaker 1: the pictures, he has no shirt on. A lot of
- 12:41Speaker 1: people are asking, how come we didn't have a shirt.
- 12:43Speaker 1: They took the shirt off because he was such a maniac.
- 12:47Speaker 1: They were worried he had explosives, he had a bomb
- 12:49Speaker 1: strap to him, something like that. So that's why they
- 12:51Speaker 1: made sure to take his shirt off and check everything. Now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: some will argue bad as you think the security was.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It worked. Here's Todd blanche system. The Secret Service kept
- 13:01Speaker 1: us safe and that man was quickly apprehended and subdued
- 13:05Speaker 1: a minute seconds after he tried to breach the perimeter. Yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 1: but again, it worked, But it would have worked better
- 13:13Speaker 1: if they got him out in the sidewalk and nobody
- 13:15Speaker 1: knew about it till later. The whole dinner was disrupted,
- 13:19Speaker 1: completely disrupted, an absolute chaos. Took place. By the way,
- 13:24Speaker 1: the shooter will be. His first court appearance is today.
- 13:28Speaker 1: He will appear in court. Today's federal court, so there's
- 13:31Speaker 1: no cameras allowed, but he'll be in court today. Now
- 13:36Speaker 1: in this crowd of dignitaries was Erica Kirk. She was
- 13:41Speaker 1: at the Fox table. Erica Kirk, of course witnessed her
- 13:44Speaker 1: husband being assassinated, so she really freaked out, understandably and
- 13:49Speaker 1: could be heard screaming, get me out of here. I
- 13:50Speaker 1: just want to go home. I just want you didn't
- 13:52Speaker 1: want to be anywhere near. They got her out of there.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Also in the room was Bobby Kennedy Junior, whose father
- 13:59Speaker 1: was assassinated. It in a hotel. Leaving the ballroom, so
- 14:03Speaker 1: you could see the look on his face. And remember
- 14:05Speaker 1: Bobby Kennedy's had so much of this in his family.
- 14:09Speaker 1: His father was assassinated in the hotel, his uncle was assassinated,
- 14:14Speaker 1: so for him this had much more impact than for
- 14:17Speaker 1: anybody else. You can see the look on his face
- 14:19Speaker 1: when they took him out of there. So we'll see
- 14:23Speaker 1: later today. The president yesterday went on sixty minutes. There
- 14:28Speaker 1: was a lot of lying from Democrats. They always they
- 14:31Speaker 1: can't admit to stuff they've been I'll play some of
- 14:34Speaker 1: this for you later, a montage of they've been calling
- 14:37Speaker 1: for violence. They've been calling for literally warfare. They've been
- 14:41Speaker 1: calling for this kind of stuff. They're all trying to
- 14:43Speaker 1: deny it now. Jimmy Kimmel, the sleazy, dirty, disgusting Jimmy Kimmel,
- 14:50Speaker 1: just a day before the dinner, decided he would pretend
- 14:54Speaker 1: he was doing the White House dinner. And what did
- 14:56Speaker 1: he do for his monologue night before the assassination tempt
- 15:00Speaker 1: Jimmy Kimmel makes a joke about assassinating Trump. Our first lady,
- 15:05Speaker 1: Malania is here. Look at so beautiful missus Trump. You
- 15:09Speaker 1: have a glow like an expectant widow. President Trump goes
- 15:16Speaker 1: on sixty minutes. You'd think they'd clean up their act
- 15:19Speaker 1: a little now. The killer's manifesto was just really idiotic,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and it shows he was riled up by the fake
- 15:25Speaker 1: news and their lives. You know, they try to convince
- 15:28Speaker 1: people that Trump is colluding with Russia. He's a criminal,
- 15:32Speaker 1: he's a pedophiles. He put all this junk in the manifesto.
- 15:37Speaker 1: But Nora O'Donnell's doing the sixty minutes interview and actually
- 15:41Speaker 1: reads it to President.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Trump, I'm no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist,
- 15:45Speaker 2: and trader to coat my hands with his crimes. What's
- 15:49Speaker 2: your reaction While I was waiting for you to read that,
- 15:51Speaker 2: because I knew you would, because you're horrible people. Horrible people. Yeah,
- 15:56Speaker 2: he did write that. I'm not a rapist, I mean
- 15:59Speaker 2: rapist anybody. Oh you're not. Excuse me, I'm not a pedophile.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You read that crap from some sick person. I got
- 16:10Speaker 2: associated with stuff that has nothing to do with me.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I was totally exonerated.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Yeah, they've convinced themselves. You know, you repeat a lie
- 16:20Speaker 1: so many times you forget you made it up, the
- 16:22Speaker 1: pedophile stuff. But good for him telling off. Nora O'Donnell.
- 16:26Speaker 2: You should be ashamed of yourself reading that because I'm
- 16:29Speaker 2: not any of those things. Excuse me. You shouldn't be
- 16:35Speaker 2: reading that in sixteen minutes. You're a disgrace. But go ahead,
- 16:38Speaker 2: let's finish the interview.
- 16:40Speaker 1: All right. We got more clips of pretty interesting stuff.
- 16:44Speaker 1: We'll get to that a little later on Michael Goodwin
- 16:47Speaker 1: in a few minutes. We'll take some calls. Next eight
- 16:49Speaker 1: hundred three to two one zero seven ten is the
- 16:52Speaker 1: number eight hundred three to two one zero seven ten
