- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of Five Minute Parenting.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Today I have a special guest, Trisha Poole.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: She has 12 years experience teaching her six children at home, and they are in grades six, seven, eight, ten, eleven, and twelve.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And she uses a variety of teaching approaches because she believes different kids have different learning needs.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And she believes that school customized to the individual student is one of the great strengths of homeschooling.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So Trish has been on before.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: She has great wisdom and advice for moms and dads who are homeschooling.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited to welcome her today.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And she's going to be sharing, um, like I said, a two-part series on embracing routines.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: This week will be why, and next week will be how.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So welcome, Trish.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much, Sandra, for having me here today.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: I am excited to be back and I'm excited to share about routines.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're gonna cover this, like Sandra said, in two parts.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: And today is six reasons why I think routines are important and why we should embrace them in our homes and for the homeschoolers out there in our homeschools.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: So let's get started with that.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Routines, number one, they save time and they foster independence.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: In our home, the morning routine for children is to get dressed, brush your teeth, complete a pre-assigned chore, and eat breakfast.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Our kids understand this sequence begins as soon as they wake up each day.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: They don't ask me what to do when they wake up because they already know the plan.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: This daily independent practice trains them while saving me the time of having to individually direct six different children.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Another reason why I think we should embrace routine is that routines naturally develop good habits.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Like many families, we have for years required our kids to brush their teeth both morning and night.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And this important habit is wrapped into our before school routine and our bedtime routine.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: So over time, teeth brushing, simply because it has been repeated twice daily for years becomes a lifelong habit that no longer requires reminding, with maybe the small exception of a few teenagers.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: So what other habits would you like your kids to develop?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Turning off the lights, reading scripture in the morning, praying at meals, routines are an excellent way to make these priorities that you have for your home and your children happen.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Another reason to embrace routine: routines provide consistency and predictability.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: And in a world that is so uh wrought with unpredictability, this is a really important thing for our kids.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: They thrive in environments that are consistent and predictable, and regular routine aids in creating these healthy environments.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: For example, the simple routine of visiting your child in bed at night to talk and pray with them helps communicate that you care about them and that no matter what their day has held, you're there.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Many of these things we've talked about so far really foster consistency and predictability in quiet, unspoken ways.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And that that's important for all kids, even ones who don't necessarily thrive on schedule or structured plans.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Those kids still need that consistency and predictability.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Routines create order, and order reflects the God that we worship.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: He is a God of order, and routine that helps us create or maintain or restore order is a reflection of God.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: It's sure that we have different levels of chaos and order that each of us can handle because each of us are unique.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: But at the end of the day, God has knit something in us that has a need for order, and routine naturally helps maintain or establish or re-establish that.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Our routine of having children um clean up while I prep dinner is a way of creating order in our schedule and in our home.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: We all enjoy a more tidy or maybe a more tidier house each evening because it is simply our routine to clean up at 5:30.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: All right, number five, routines help us to be intentional.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: The best parents I know are not the same.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: They parent differently, they do things differently, but I find they all have something in common.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: They are intentional.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And routines can be wildly different from home to home, but whatever they are, they help us to be intentional.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And having a decided flow to our day indicates that at some point we intentionally thought about what is best for our family.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: And so having routine helps us avoid the passing of days with no consideration of what is most important and how we want to accomplish that.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: The last thing about routines is that we can begin them anytime, even today.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: We don't have to wait for some special date on a calendar.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um, if you've decided that your family needs to adopt a routine, you can start today.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And if you're convinced that routines are helpful, but you're not sure where to start, I'm gonna share a few simple tips for creating routines for chores and schedules in the next podcast.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And I hope you'll join us for some more practical encouragement on routines.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I also want to encourage you, um, I'm a homeschooling with confidence.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: I own this business, and our website is www.hswithconfidence.com.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: And if you come visit us on our website or find us on Facebook or Instagram, you can um find a lot of resources about routines, maintaining and keeping routines.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Yes, Trish, thank you for being with us today.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And I will put your website in the show notes so people can visit your site.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And I highly recommend you visit the website and sign up for Trisha's newsletter because whenever it comes out, she has um just so much wisdom and it and helpful tips and things to share with you.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So, particularly if you are a homeschooling parent, make sure you check out Trisha's website.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And um, I was just gonna ask you, Trisha, have you educated all six children since they began school?
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: We have since my first one is in kindergarten.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: She's graduating in just a few months.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: So this is uh this is our 13th year of home educating them.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: It is a wild ride.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I'm sure.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And it's just great that you've had so much experience with all these different ages.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much for being on our podcast and sharing that.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And we will talk to you soon for part two.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: All right, thank you.
