Transcript
- 0:02Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06Movie talk Show. Each week when it takes a movie
- 0:08off, our show presents it to the other for discussion.
- 0:19And this week we've got coming off of Dave's Shelf 1980 Ones,
- 0:24Mad Max 2, The Road Warrior. Or is it the Road Warrior Mad
- 0:28Max 2? It actually just comes up as
- 0:30road warrior and I, yeah, because I've got a problem with
- 0:33that. That's a real question.
- 0:34Yeah, we'll hash that out. So here we are.
- 0:36David, I have to ask right off the bat, why is this movie on
- 0:41your? Show I know you have to ask.
- 0:42I also know you know the answer, but for those who don't, the
- 0:45listeners, we've covered Furiosa, we've covered Fury Rd.
- 0:50The reason why this is on my shelf is I really liked Fury
- 0:53Road and that was my introduction to the character
- 0:56sought in theatres. Yes, let's be clear about that.
- 0:59Available in the archives. So on one of our walks to
- 1:01Wellington, Beautiful day we went.
- 1:05They had the box set of the original and Fury Rd. had done
- 1:10enough to make me curious about the origins of this character.
- 1:15So it was a beautiful set, 1-2 and three and for a good price
- 1:20as always. Yeah, like great deals.
- 1:22So that's why it made it to myself.
- 1:25And it took me a while to watch them.
- 1:28This is my first viewing. Actually, Oh my God, Rd.
- 1:31Wellington has been closed for about 6 years.
- 1:33And at least I'd watched the original, I think, once, and
- 1:36then again for the podcast. And we did do Mad Max last
- 1:40month. So, yeah, I mean, you knew what
- 1:42was coming. I suspected certainly, if not
- 1:45now. When?
- 1:46That's the question. I mean, I think it's pretty
- 1:48relevant. It turned out to be.
- 1:50I will say that. I did not expect until I
- 1:52actually watched him. Like, yeah.
- 1:54Well, there's nothing more relevant in life really than the
- 1:56IMDb, so let's go to Old Faithful.
- 1:59In the post apocalyptic Australian wasteland, A cynical
- 2:02drifter agrees to help a small gasoline rich community get rid
- 2:06of a horde of bandits. Would you put these in the
- 2:09bandit category, David? Yeah, on the farthest part of
- 2:15the spectrum of bandits. Yeah, I guess they're pushing
- 2:18this undersells what happens. And I wouldn't say the other
- 2:20guys are gas rich. Yes, there have some.
- 2:24They've got some, but they don't have a lot.
- 2:26Enough to fit in a bus. School bus.
- 2:28Exactly. They get precious.
- 2:30So nobody has a lot. That's right.
- 2:32And is Max cynical? Yes, that part is true.
- 2:36Absolutely, buddy. The hell he's gone through.
- 2:38Now, after watching the first one, we probably covered this,
- 2:42but let's reiterate it. If you don't mind a recap, if
- 2:45you will. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:48Were you interested in watching this movie?
- 2:51Because. You'd watched the first one only
- 2:54Insomuch as I thought the first one was terrible, I really did
- 2:57not like. It.
- 2:58I don't, I don't. He thought it was terrible.
- 3:00It was slow and I thought it was eventful.
- 3:03OK, alright. And check the tape.
- 3:05But whatever I thought I was just unimpressed.
- 3:08Let's say Beyond badge was unimpressed.
- 3:09Yeah, it was a let down because of maybe the hype or maybe
- 3:12because you had seen Fury Rose. I really liked Fury Rd. more and
- 3:15I hated Furiosa. So this was oh, OK.
- 3:18Well, I think I'm kind of done, but contractually I had to watch
- 3:22this one and we had ended the last one by thinking, or at
- 3:26least in my case hoping that my thoughts of what the Mad Max
- 3:30character. Were.
- 3:32Were. Better defined by Part 2 than
- 3:34they were in Part 1. Because yeah, my issue in Part 1
- 3:37was I am. Who is.
- 3:38This doesn't feel like a Mad Max at all to me.
- 3:41I do remember you saying that and I knew that this was much
- 3:47better received from a from a critic because you pay attention
- 3:51perspective. I do.
- 3:53I just people have talked about Road Warrior being a really good
- 3:56movie. So I, I put some stock into
- 3:58that, sure. And obviously maybe they used
- 4:01the first one to get the ball rolling or maybe to get a budget
- 4:04could be to put this one. Highest grossing Australian
- 4:07movie in the history of time and Road Warrior.
- 4:10No, the first one. The first one.
- 4:11It was a huge, huge, huge success.
- 4:12Yeah. People liked it enough to come
- 4:14back, so they were curious, yes. Maybe you weren't.
- 4:18I was not, because I just didn't think that the first one gave me
- 4:20any reason to be excited. About it?
- 4:22Well, at the end of this episode I'm going to ask you if you are
- 4:26now excited or inclined to watch the next one.
- 4:29Now are you? Actually going to do that or is
- 4:31it gonna be like last week where you said we were going to do
- 4:34something? That's right, we forgot.
- 4:35Again, we didn't. Do it.
- 4:37I mean, I gave it away. Off David set up some.
- 4:39I know I did gave away the the biggest loser and the least
- 4:42biggest loser. From last So the game is kind
- 4:44of. Over, yeah, but you can figure
- 4:46out. Listen to episode, you can
- 4:47figure it out. You can read between the lines.
- 4:50Markings on the Facebook. Page Now if you can't read
- 4:52between the lines for this movie at the beginning, here we are
- 4:56again with another voiceover. Yeah, we're not going to make a
- 4:58meal out of it. No, but it is important to touch
- 5:01on. But more so the graphics, like
- 5:04everything that's being presented to us at the beginning
- 5:07to set up this movie, maybe for the audience to hasn't seen the
- 5:11first one or to give more of a detailed background of the world
- 5:17that has been already built back in 1970.
- 5:20Nine Yeah. What's crazy is that this is
- 5:22really not that long ago. So I thought it was interesting
- 5:24to open with a recap for a movie that was hyper successful.
- 5:28Yes, and it was a couple of years ago, right?
- 5:30I would expect something maybe like a in Blade Runner 2049,
- 5:34being that it was 40 years later or something, right?
- 5:37Like you might be inclined to sort of go, hey, here's who
- 5:39everybody. Is yeah, it's a heads.
- 5:41Up, you know, some sense of the world building because it is
- 5:45iterative like that. And so this I thought it
- 5:47interesting, but I think the best part of the movie is not
- 5:50the best. But I was immediately hooked by
- 5:52the way they set this up. It made what happened before
- 5:56better because it meant that I didn't have to watch.
- 6:00It it's true, like a rocky situation, not the Rocky was
- 6:03bad, but we really had to go through the 1st 10 minutes.
- 6:06Yeah, that's right. Come on.
- 6:07Just the old one. Especially for watching them,
- 6:09you know, back-to-back. I think we did one year.
- 6:12But I enjoyed it. I liked the voice itself that's
- 6:14delivering it. I found it interesting them
- 6:16showing some footage from what looked like Normandy.
- 6:19OK, like I don't more footage. From back when I'm using black
- 6:23and white, I mean, that doesn't necessarily mean that, but I
- 6:26think it was a good way to illustrate the world.
- 6:30Where we're at now, it's a post apocalyptic world, which is
- 6:33obviously was the first one as well.
- 6:34Yeah. Show some tanks, show some
- 6:36bombs. Yeah.
- 6:37What I think even right away is just the shot of Max in general
- 6:41watching, you know, the men we call Max.
- 6:45And he's standing there in the distance and you can kind of see
- 6:47Superimpose, the Gastown behind him, the smoke billowing up his
- 6:52silhouette. You're like, well, this is the
- 6:54character that I have in my head.
- 6:56Yeah. And I didn't really, even though
- 6:58the shot I believe is from the first one, it's the only shot of
- 7:00the movie or the first one that was like, oh, this is the
- 7:04character. Everything else didn't really
- 7:05deliver. And like you're saying with
- 7:07voice over talking about how the.
- 7:08Black. Fuel ran the world in wars were
- 7:11caused and and fought over it and what was left was no fuel.
- 7:15There was nothing. We were built in a House of
- 7:17straw. There was no action from leaders
- 7:20and the world crumbled. I mean, that's the world we're
- 7:22living in to a certain. Extent pretty close, yeah.
- 7:25And on the brink of it anyway, yeah, this movie ended up being
- 7:28more relevant than I anticipated.
- 7:31Certainly. Unfortunately, yeah.
- 7:33Exposes that reliance on gas. That certainly oil and whatever
- 7:36else, such a controlling thing. Yeah.
- 7:39So I thought it's a summarization.
- 7:41I thought really effective. You established the character,
- 7:44the name, even the look, and you don't have to watch anything.
- 7:47Else, and that brings me to a question, is the first movie
- 7:51necessary for, say, someone who wants to dive into this series,
- 7:57get to know the character? I would say not at all, not at
- 8:00all, not even a little bit. Wow.
- 8:02I don't think there's anything that happens in the first movie
- 8:05that makes this movie any better.
- 8:08Perhaps I feel like because we did watch the movie, we might be
- 8:12taking a little bit for granted. Like, for example, in the recap,
- 8:16we see his girlfriend. Effectively, if they're married,
- 8:20I'm not sure they're status. They're not anymore.
- 8:22They're in a situation. Yeah.
- 8:24And getting run over. I don't know if seeing that in
- 8:28this does enough to say ohhhhh, his wife was killed, I think.
- 8:32Who cares? First movie.
- 8:33Yeah, Yeah, I guess that's the. Argument I'm like because what
- 8:36they do in voice over they say Max lost everything over what
- 8:40we're. Seeing and that's.
- 8:40Enough, it reads. Max lost everything, left him a
- 8:42shell of a man. I mean, you might be.
- 8:45Right. So to me, that summarizes what
- 8:47that emotional moment was in the first one, which I didn't find
- 8:51particularly emotional because there was no real character
- 8:53depth or anything. Yeah, so I mean, that's for me.
- 8:55I just felt if I just come in on this one, I'm not lost at all.
- 8:58I think, right. I think I'm coming to defence of
- 9:02it because in a perfect world you need every movie that's in a
- 9:07you'd assume trilogy. You would assume so, but it's
- 9:09not always the case. I think about a movie like The
- 9:11Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, and those movies are at least at
- 9:17their core, remakes. It's the second one, but if you
- 9:21never saw The Evil Dead, you could watch Evil Dead 2.
- 9:24You're fine and nothing is lost. It recaps a little bit.
- 9:27It's got a budget. It it's a little bit higher
- 9:29brow, let's say or not you're proud, but higher production
- 9:33value. But fundamentally nothing to me
- 9:36is gained beyond OHT. Look at where it was and where
- 9:40it is, but it's mostly technical.
- 9:41So on this one, I would say if I watched the first one, I would
- 9:44say, oh, this is that with a budget bigger and maybe arguably
- 9:48better. Two things I think it'd be
- 9:50interesting had the first movie been better is to this to be the
- 9:54first one and the other one to act as a prequel going George.
- 9:58Lucas on it. We saw what they did with the
- 10:00prequel and it sucked. Furiosa is the prequel to.
- 10:04Your. Road and I thought it was.
- 10:06I there are things you liked about that.
- 10:08You loved Hemsworth in that buddy.
- 10:10I thought his performance was really good, riveting, I think.
- 10:14But yeah, you certainly had some issues with it.
- 10:16Yeah. So I think.
- 10:17The way that structure is, if I were to think about it, I would
- 10:20probably drop the first one. I just, I don't think it really
- 10:22benefits, OK. I had a feeling.
- 10:24Yeah, yeah. But that's not to say it
- 10:26affected my appreciation of this, because I think Max is
- 10:28established well enough in just a couple of quick lines of
- 10:31dialogue. He doesn't do anything simple
- 10:33care. He doesn't say anything.
- 10:34You're living in a post apocalyptic world.
- 10:36I accept that everybody is cynical to a certain extent,
- 10:40like there's no reason for him to be.
- 10:42Yeah, bubbly, except for a character that we're gonna meet
- 10:45very soon. He seemed to have somewhat of
- 10:48good spirits in the film. Lifted would be a good term.
- 10:53But just before we get to that, as we get into this movie, I do
- 10:57like after all of that, the car driving with the camera right at
- 11:01the front, Phenomenal. It just gives you that little
- 11:03bit of a quick jolt that we got a little taste of in the first
- 11:07movie. The things that it did well
- 11:09briefly was that and we get into a quick chase sequence and
- 11:14introduce what we think is possibly this movie's main body.
- 11:19It's sort of presented as such. Wes, I believe his name is, who
- 11:23might be gay. Not that there's anything wrong
- 11:24with that with his blonde buddy on the back.
- 11:27Yeah, Golden Boy. Golden Boy says his name in the
- 11:29no. This is what I would call him
- 11:31and it's what this movie would call him I think if they wanted
- 11:33to. Did you notice when they're
- 11:35leaving like they give up on their moving on?
- 11:39It looked like a dummy on the back of the bike.
- 11:41Oh, I did not. Know that I don't know, maybe
- 11:43it's just me like I don't. Think that's a real person?
- 11:45Interesting because so much of this movie is practical.
- 11:47Because not exactly Furiosa and to a lesser extent Fury Rd.
- 11:51Yeah, it is all practical. There is no CGI, obviously.
- 11:53And what did you think of the body coming out of the transport
- 11:57truck after this little chase scene with the eyes bugged out?
- 12:00Like from a makeup perspective? OK, Yeah.
- 12:02Didn't really leave an impression on me.
- 12:03I have to say, just before we get too far in, I think this
- 12:07opening 7 minutes or whatever it is is an incredible oh good.
- 12:11I'm very much hooked into what was happening.
- 12:13I'm happy to hear that. From the you're saying the
- 12:15crashing in, I thought it was really good.
- 12:16I thought the introduction of this villain, I don't know
- 12:19anything about him obviously, but the look is impressive and
- 12:22it is engaging even if nothing comes of it.
- 12:25He reminded me of the Mohawk guy on the bus in Star Trek 4 with
- 12:30the ghetto blaster. I.
- 12:32Say. Screw yeah, Yeah.
- 12:34Yeah, I wish that song was in our last weeks.
- 12:37Movie there I think I would have the haircut was.
- 12:40Pretty similar and we get a couple odd streams again, one
- 12:44from Wes and then you have the arm coming up with the other
- 12:48vehicle. I just they love those things in
- 12:50these. Movies, Diaries, but it's.
- 12:52Yeah, why not? Why not?
- 12:53Makes it makes it interesting. Crazy world, why not have a
- 12:56little fun with? It and we find out that Max has
- 12:59a dog. He had a dog last movie, I
- 13:02thought. I don't remember the dog.
- 13:04Well, let's pretend we didn't know that.
- 13:06And I have to ask you, did you think the dog was gonna?
- 13:09Die I did not. Cause that's what we do here,
- 13:11Phil, it turns out. I was so happy that it was your
- 13:15movie. I know because I had an
- 13:17uncomfortable stretch. Of.
- 13:20Unconsciously picking movies. With dog death.
- 13:22With dog death. So I was happy that you
- 13:24hopefully unconsciously, yeah, grabbed this off the shelf.
- 13:28Well, I mean to keep on theme, but I it's not the why should
- 13:31you do it? Yeah.
- 13:32Well, that's good. Because I was getting concerned
- 13:34there for a little while and like I mentioned, we run into
- 13:38the gyro captain. Hmm.
- 13:40Played by. I wrote it down somewhere.
- 13:43Bruce Spence. Yeah.
- 13:45Did you recognize him? I know this isn't your game.
- 13:48I absolutely did not recognize him, but I absolutely loved his
- 13:51introduction. Hmm.
- 13:52Yeah, hiding in the sand like that.
- 13:54Yeah. I was the trailer for the
- 13:55Odyssey. Great film and coming out next
- 13:58year. OK, Christopher Nolan, you
- 14:00probably never see it, but there's a scene where everybody
- 14:03comes out of the ground like that.
- 14:05And I was like, that's a really good, effective thing.
- 14:07So the fact that this gyro craft is so impressively introduced
- 14:11and then so immediately a laughing.
- 14:13Stock chicken legs, man. He's wearing yellow for one, and
- 14:17they're thin legs. Yes, he's got quite a look.
- 14:19He has a way with the snakes. Sure, but what?
- 14:21Should I recognize him from him? Sorry.
- 14:23He played one of the trade characters in Phantom Menace.
- 14:29He was the blue one. Jesus.
- 14:31And when you look at him and you check out Phantom Menace, you
- 14:34can see that it's. Him from yellow legs to blue.
- 14:36Yeah, but he's got the makeup on.
- 14:38But that face is pretty distinctive.
- 14:40He was also. Like Sean Wayland.
- 14:42Yeah, I would say put him in that category.
- 14:45He was in Return of the King and Matrix series, OK, Revolutions,
- 14:51maybe the other ones, but so he's been in some big films.
- 14:54But he's, yeah, he's that guy. He's that guy.
- 14:57Sure, he's great. But yeah, the snake work I
- 14:59thought was really cool. Yeah, Max is.
- 15:02He's not. He's not unlike Tom Hardy,
- 15:04right? You cast this character because
- 15:07you cast this actor story because he can convey something
- 15:09that isn't otherwise verbalized. So Tom Hardy just needs to be.
- 15:14And you're like, yeah, I got a sense of who this guy is.
- 15:16And Gibson, at least at this juncture of his career, is,
- 15:21yeah, you've got enough charisma that still does.
- 15:25Just so you know. You sure you don't have
- 15:28charisma? You can hold up the screen, hold
- 15:29the frame. So whatever you're doing with
- 15:31your eyes, your body language, this and that, doesn't matter
- 15:34what you're saying, I acting. Do you think Tom Hardy spoke
- 15:36more in Fury Rd. than in Dunkirk?
- 15:39Cause he didn't say much in that either.
- 15:40Early enough. He prefers it gets paid less.
- 15:44Yeah, well, you wish you would talk less in Dark Knight.
- 15:46Rises or not at all. Not at all.
- 15:49A little bit. And with that charisma that Max
- 15:53has, he's able to extract some information from Gyro.
- 15:58Captain, I think, is actually what he's created.
- 16:01Yeah, he gets told all about the chunka, chunka, chunka.
- 16:03Chunka yeah, in the tankers and that's important cause everybody
- 16:06needs fuel. Natural gas, 10W30 diesel.
- 16:12Yeah, yeah, apparently that's what his car runs on.
- 16:15I think I don't. Know tough to say I don't I
- 16:16mean, I don't know how to gas. Guys, you know, I was in the
- 16:19business for a few years, so it's your world.
- 16:21I know all about it. It's expensive, that's all I
- 16:23know now, certainly. And they get themselves a nice
- 16:26little perch perch out, that perfect good one.
- 16:31I know I can count on you for those ones.
- 16:34And we get our first look of Gastown, yes, which is a little
- 16:40underwhelming if you compare it to Fury Road and Furiosa, just
- 16:44because of CGI, right? It's sure.
- 16:46This is bigger budgets. And yeah, it looked like Uncle
- 16:48Owen's place on Tatooine. What?
- 16:50I mean 1 little refinery. Maybe, yes, very small stakes.
- 16:54Yeah, but we have a lot of cards coming in and a lot of swarming.
- 16:58You've ever been swarmed, you ever been swatted, That's the
- 17:02thing. Neither.
- 17:05Neither. One thing I was curious about
- 17:10though, Phil, yes, is this town which has gas and they know they
- 17:14have gas. That's why they're there.
- 17:16Yeah. They have some of their guys
- 17:18leaving. I don't know where they going
- 17:20grocery shopping. I don't know for supplies, I
- 17:24don't like the odds knowing that these bandits are just ready to
- 17:31pounce on you and you're going out with no defence, a car
- 17:35that's made of chicken wire and to expect to come back alive.
- 17:41I don't know Port. Choice doesn't work out for
- 17:44them. No it doesn't.
- 17:45You have to check your history, but I think maybe you take a
- 17:48little too many rapey movies off.
- 17:51You know, I don't like to see breasts under those
- 17:54circumstances. No, it's nothing titillating
- 17:57about that, No. And I also don't like to see a
- 18:00man with butt cheek leather pants.
- 18:03There's a lot of that in this movie, so you're going to.
- 18:05Have to. Yeah, Wes, That's his look.
- 18:07Now, you went on record saying you didn't wear leather pants.
- 18:10I accuse you of wearing leather pants.
- 18:11Did. But if you did wear leather
- 18:13pants, would your cheeks be? Exposed I have a great ass so I
- 18:19might you. Might, I might I would consider
- 18:21it so you might go the way of the Wes.
- 18:22I might be the Yeah, it's it's for the others more than it is
- 18:26for. Me, I promise you.
- 18:28It's kind of funny to watch, though.
- 18:29I don't know why. I think he's the only one.
- 18:31I think others have it too. And possibly there is a lot of
- 18:33hockey equipment. I don't know if you noticed the
- 18:35shoulder pads and a lot of gym attire, like with the headbands.
- 18:39I love the makeup. Yeah, I love the look.
- 18:42I love the the art design, the costume design.
- 18:45Whoever did the costume was on this.
- 18:47Oscar that look of Wes I had never seen before this.
- 18:52I've never seen this movie before.
- 18:54Thank you for asking and I assumed as much but that
- 18:58character I know from weird science which I debated taking
- 19:01off the shelf this but I remember you going to put a.
- 19:04Pause talked about it. That's.
- 19:04Fine, but so seeing him in his element, let's say I was
- 19:08impressed, but I like the look of it.
- 19:11I think again, you're looking at a low budget, but you're also
- 19:13looking at post apocalypse, right?
- 19:15So I think it is a scavenging type of, you know, situation.
- 19:18So if that stuff existed in the world, you pick it up as you go
- 19:23and you exactly wear it, right. I think they had fun with it.
- 19:25Yeah. So don't think it's too far out
- 19:27of line. No.
- 19:27With the chicken wire card, it's like, what do we have available?
- 19:30Sure. To protect the windows.
- 19:31This is what we have. Let's go.
- 19:33No, I love all of it. I think just the butt cheek
- 19:35itself, it's choice. But again, it's captivating.
- 19:48Max, having the history that he has, didn't like what happened
- 19:51there. It's very similar to the first
- 19:53one where they chased down a couple and do more or less the
- 19:57exact same. Thing correct.
- 19:59And that's what starts the Road Warriors themselves tracking
- 20:02down the people that had raped and killed this person.
- 20:04And you know, this one, they both die, unfortunately, the
- 20:07first ones, I think they both survived.
- 20:09Yeah, that's they upped the ante.
- 20:10Like that's what you do in sequels, the up, the Annie and
- 20:13he takes David. That's the guys.
- 20:15Name. Yeah, he's still alive.
- 20:16Well, yeah, he's fading. He's fading and he's fading fast
- 20:20and he wants to go back to Gas Town because that's where he.
- 20:22Lives. Yeah.
- 20:23Dave's like, hey, just bring me home and I'll get you some gas
- 20:26and that's all. This whole economy is built on a
- 20:29good deal. You give me gas, I'll go.
- 20:30So that's what Max wants. Max commits, unfortunately, when
- 20:35they get to the refinery. What or is he welcomed?
- 20:39I wouldn't say necessarily. I don't think there were arms
- 20:43that were open. No, but he's got him on his back
- 20:45so he shows he's at least a not. Exactly right.
- 20:49Terrible person. He's not a bandit.
- 20:51That's right. But the deal was with David,
- 20:53unfortunately. Yet finds out David is dead.
- 20:55Max just says. Look, I just need the gas.
- 20:57I'm out of here. And they want him for a little
- 21:00more. They want to ask him more
- 21:01questions. He doesn't want it.
- 21:02Just give me the gas and they won't give it.
- 21:04To him, no Zetas. Like who's the leader?
- 21:06Yes, look like Mick Jagger a little bit.
- 21:08A blonde Mick Jagger. See.
- 21:10Look it up again. Maybe this is Mick Jagger.
- 21:12It was not. It was not.
- 21:13No, I wasn't even close. And the kid in this movie was
- 21:17Willow? No, I just thought of Willow
- 21:20when I saw the kid. OK, I don't know.
- 21:22Well, Willow, I think. I don't know.
- 21:24I've never seen that movie. You ever seen Willow?
- 21:26No. What's wrong with you?
- 21:28I don't like how old are you? You were turning.
- 21:31By the way, it's still your birthday weekend.
- 21:34That age. I'm not gonna say your age on
- 21:36live radio here. And you haven't seen Willow?
- 21:40Never. I don't remember anything about
- 21:41it. I think it's a little person
- 21:43though. Warwick Davis.
- 21:44Warwick Davis? Yeah, she work as well.
- 21:46Yeah. So just a really short person
- 21:49this is. This is a kid.
- 21:50Yes, I'm just going based on the.
- 21:51Haircut. So you're OK?
- 21:54It's a weak linkage. I would.
- 21:56Say check the prostate. You think a little caveman kid?
- 22:01Yeah, definitely looks a little feral.
- 22:03I would say he's, yeah, I think so.
- 22:07Feral Kid, that's how he's casting that.
- 22:09Because he is, yeah. He's got boomerang that's put a
- 22:12pin in that. That's Boomerang is going to go
- 22:16into somebody twice and it's not going to be Carl Winslow
- 22:19throwing at this time, no. Jesus, wow, another Australian
- 22:23film. They love their boomerangs
- 22:25there. You go.
- 22:25They invented it. And now we get the introduction,
- 22:28my friend of the actual villain. Yeah, Wes's boss.
- 22:34That's right. Humongous Lord.
- 22:36Humongous. Humongous.
- 22:37I think it's called the Humongous, yeah.
- 22:39Looks like Jason. Yeah, I love this.
- 22:41Look, it's great. And again, having never seen
- 22:44this movie, there was a wrestler probably around this time called
- 22:47Lord Humongous, and I think it might have even.
- 22:49Been this guy, maybe? Because he was all jacked up in
- 22:51the same Jason mask or like based on this guy and definitely
- 22:54based. That's obvious, but I thought
- 22:56like actually might be the same actor because he was all jacked
- 23:00up when I saw him in this. Like that looks exactly like the
- 23:02guy that I used to watch wrestle very briefly in that time frame.
- 23:05Lord Humongous. It's not only the mask is when
- 23:07you look at the back of his. Head.
- 23:09He's got a thing. Yeah, like.
- 23:10Barely any hair and like the scars and like I I the timing.
- 23:14Yeah it is. And I think it's a good 1-2
- 23:17punch with him and Wes. 2 very distinct bad guys, similar to
- 23:20the first one. Yeah.
- 23:22But these words are amped up a little.
- 23:23Bit The thing is, for these two in relationship, the Knight
- 23:27Rider was never something I felt threatened.
- 23:31By like you, not him. Right.
- 23:32And like that whole, even any of them never really felt any
- 23:35intimidation. Yeah, not even Bradley Cooper.
- 23:39But these two guys, Wes and Humongous, I think, deliver at
- 23:43least a level of of an imposing figure and a threat that you can
- 23:49believe something bad could happen or that they're
- 23:51villainous enough to take it. Yeah, to that degree.
- 23:54Whereas the night right there. That's so much.
- 23:56Just didn't really struck me that.
- 23:57Way, ironically, the humongous is actually being quite
- 24:01reasonable here with his demands, at least how he's
- 24:06rejecting it. And I wrote that down that he is
- 24:10being reasonable. 10 seconds later or 15 seconds or a minute
- 24:14later, someone in Gastown says he's being reasonable.
- 24:18I'm like, wow, that's what I said right here on the notes.
- 24:23But yeah, I really like where this movie has started.
- 24:26I like where it's heading. I like the bad guys.
- 24:28I like the getups. I'm starting to see why people
- 24:32might enjoy this movie, like why it's well received.
- 24:36OK, just already at this point. Yeah, yeah, we're not that far
- 24:39into it. We've already had a little bit
- 24:40of death and a little bit of raping, a little bit of nudity.
- 24:43God, I'll put it that way. I can see why you might be
- 24:48excited by that. And the boomerang taking care of
- 24:50a couple of fingers. Oh, yes, The the discovery.
- 24:53Let's say the boomerang is not just a that's a play toy sharp.
- 24:57Well, first. It eliminates Blondie like right
- 25:00in the skull, and then the guy you're talking about tries to
- 25:04catch it. About two minutes later.
- 25:06I got it. I got it.
- 25:08And takes his fingers like you don't got it.
- 25:11You just two minutes ago you saw it wedged in this guy's head.
- 25:15I'm like, come on, bad call. That guy made a bad call.
- 25:18Yeah, the boomerangs did some damage for sure, Pretty boy, as
- 25:21you said, but at least that's quick.
- 25:23And what happens when Humongous shows up, the great shot as it
- 25:26pulls up into frame is the reveal of two.
- 25:30Oh, yes. I mean, I think in Fury Rd.
- 25:32I think they called them blood bags.
- 25:33Yeah. But having them strapped to the
- 25:35front of the car, I think elevates that threat that we
- 25:39just talked about, where the baddies really feel pretty bad.
- 25:44Right. And a great visual, I thought.
- 25:46Yeah, there was like. 1/2 a dozen at least hostages.
- 25:49And that's the deal. Here's your hostages back.
- 25:52Yeah, give us the gas and we'll give you safe passage.
- 25:55One day to decide. Very reasonable.
- 25:57Exactly. This is what I'm saying, Phil,
- 25:59But I don't think they like the deal and the humongous.
- 26:03I mean, he is a good leader. I want to say that right now.
- 26:06I think this again. Is a good structure.
- 26:09Here's org. Structure.
- 26:11Exactly. And while he's trying to make
- 26:13this deal, he's comforting Wes. Truth.
- 26:17Because he lost his boy toy. I don't know.
- 26:20I don't know if the relationship, it doesn't matter,
- 26:22but I don't know what it is. But these movies, just their
- 26:27reactions and some sounds that come out of them is just funny.
- 26:32Very big performances, big wide eyes, screams, contorted faces,
- 26:36right? A little extreme on all levels
- 26:38for sure for. Sure, I enjoyed that that well,
- 26:40but. It wasn't that guy.
- 26:42He's emotional, yeah. He is and he brings that.
- 26:44He brings that to the table. Yeah, that's why you want him as
- 26:46your number. Two well might get him into a
- 26:48little trouble little later on. Just got a temper.
- 26:52So the group at Gas Town wrestle with this choice.
- 26:56Hmm, like last week. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:59Do you hunker down? Yeah, just protect.
- 27:01And. And Max explains that he's
- 27:04willing to. Help.
- 27:05Just needs the gas. Because he knows where the Mack
- 27:08truck. Is that's it?
- 27:09So I've got a rig that can take care of you.
- 27:12Give me some diesel. Just give me some diesel.
- 27:14And he walks it back. We watch him kind of travel with
- 27:17his little, you know, his Jerry cans.
- 27:19Yeah. And finds the gyro captain who's
- 27:22who he basically handcuffed back where he had his little perch
- 27:26there. Right?
- 27:27Like your guy. OK, I'll wait.
- 27:30He's not treating him very well. He didn't even let him have any
- 27:32dog food. He just got the little bit at
- 27:34the bottom there. I know.
- 27:35Like, come on here. It's good stuff.
- 27:36Yeah. So that I thought was visually.
- 27:39Pleasing. It's obviously not a really like
- 27:41exciting scene, but in terms of the shots and the frames and
- 27:44this and that I thought was really compelling.
- 27:46And we recognize that Gyro Captain can take his machine, if
- 27:51you will, to Gastown and and and the rig can can go back with
- 27:55Max. Well, I mean, Max told him to
- 27:57just go away like you're on your own.
- 28:00And I realized, well, he can't really go with Max anyways,
- 28:02because who's going to fly the chopper?
- 28:04He's not gonna just leave it there.
- 28:05This is like, it's all the rage, man.
- 28:08Everybody loves it. Yeah, even Arnold.
- 28:10Get to the choppa. Everybody wants it, Doesn't want
- 28:12anybody touch it. So I thought that was a little.
- 28:14Bit strange it's the most advanced piece of technology in
- 28:17the movie. Realise everything else is on
- 28:19the road and accessible right? If you're able to get an angle.
- 28:23Exactly. That is, I think it adds like a
- 28:25total level of interest in this movie 100%.
- 28:27Now, like any Mad Max movie, you're not going to travel
- 28:32anywhere easily without some trouble along the way.
- 28:36Chicanery. He's driving the truck.
- 28:41Just little things I like about this movie.
- 28:43One guy just gets crushed by a car.
- 28:45If you notice that I just. They do it really well.
- 28:47Yeah. And Mr. Humongous.
- 28:49Is it Mr. Humongous? The Mr. The.
- 28:52Is revealed that he has a really nice pistol.
- 28:55Did you see that? It would not be a reference of
- 28:57it. Oh yeah.
- 28:58And he shoots the truck. I think he hits the radiator.
- 29:01OK. Do you know where that is?
- 29:02It's at the front. Smoke comes.
- 29:04Up. OK, everybody knows.
- 29:05Just checking. But fortunately, he's able to
- 29:08get the truck to the destination, back to gas.
- 29:11Yeah. And that's the deal.
- 29:12Here's your truck. Give me the give me the gas,
- 29:15diesel, whatever you want to call it.
- 29:17We're done. But Zeta wants him to put the
- 29:20pressure. He doesn't pressure pressure to
- 29:23drive the truck because he's only one that has a license.
- 29:25That's it apparently. He's got a G2.
- 29:28Well, I think you need a special one for the Mac truck.
- 29:30When people used to talk about Mac trucks, I didn't realize it
- 29:33was like brand. It's like the Kleenex of trucks.
- 29:36I'm like, oh, OK, that makes sense.
- 29:40Be that which it may, but Humongous is not happy.
- 29:43No, he's yeah, the deal is yeah. Like this is his whole thing
- 29:47now, his deal, and now you've pissed me off and now he's being
- 29:50unreasonable. Like he really didn't
- 29:52appreciate. This very vengeful, very upset,
- 29:54but beautifully shot in the rain.
- 29:57It doesn't rain often from. That's the impression I get.
- 29:59Don't get that impression at all.
- 30:00Yes, you're right here. Yeah, I get the fires going.
- 30:03I think he's torched somebody at this point.
- 30:06Yeah, it's not pretty, but it's a beautiful imagery.
- 30:08Yeah, I think it's great and it allows him to up the ante, gives
- 30:13them a reason to attack effectively, and they're still
- 30:17trying to convince Max to help them fight.
- 30:20Is that A says some things that he might not be able to take
- 30:22back? He might burn that bridge.
- 30:24Yeah, could be. Tell me about him.
- 30:26No, he didn't. It's fine.
- 30:29All said and done, he lets him go and he indicates that he's an
- 30:32honorable man because he's stuck with the deal.
- 30:34That's a big thing in these types of films is there's not
- 30:37much honor left. So when it does come along and
- 30:40you have some honor, you can appreciate someone else's honor
- 30:43because there's not a lot your honor.
- 30:45Well, I think it does say in his convincing or attempt to
- 30:49convince Max. I do think he says some
- 30:51interesting things by suggesting that Max is not alone, right?
- 30:55Max thinks is presenting as. Lone wolf, kind of.
- 30:59Guy, yeah, I don't need this. And he just keeps saying we're
- 31:01all scavengers, we've all lost family, we've all lost our
- 31:03lives, we've all lost. You're no better, no different.
- 31:06You're not special. Well, I think he is, but he's
- 31:08not wrong. Yeah, generally.
- 31:09You have a responsibility if you choose to, but don't think that
- 31:13you're somehow above us or anything else.
- 31:15And I think that right or wrong is some of the messaging of or
- 31:20at least lost in some of this. Is that community feeling right?
- 31:23Max is this lone wolf guy. But every time he's alone, bad
- 31:27things happen. You don't want to be around.
- 31:29This guy, because this fucking guy in the last movie.
- 31:32This is one of my issues with the first movie, which was the
- 31:35Road Warriors. They're the best of the best or
- 31:38whatever. And they all died relatively
- 31:41easily. He was immediately injured, his
- 31:43leg was broken, bloodied and battered.
- 31:45Yeah, he still struggles with that.
- 31:46He's a. Little bit of a limp, sure, but
- 31:49now it's a new movie and he has another fight with somebody and
- 31:53he's like, all I want is the gas.
- 31:55And reluctantly they give him. They say, OK, you're fine,
- 31:57you're not doing it. Max is on his known for about 6
- 32:00fucking minutes. Ohhhhh yeah, yeah.
- 32:03And even. And is blown up.
- 32:05Yeah, rolled over, destroyed and beaten by the bad guys, just as
- 32:08in the first movie. Yeah, that's why I don't think
- 32:10it matters, because it's the same thing.
- 32:12Super quick. Yeah, I was expecting a longer.
- 32:15He got out of the gas town and was immediately swarmed and
- 32:19swatted and beat up and so he's basically left for dead.
- 32:24Yeah, I think Wes really should have double checked on that.
- 32:27Just saying. Yes, Sir, You know we're good.
- 32:30Yeah, the dog is dead. We assume that Max is.
- 32:33Did a big blow up. I mean I.
- 32:34Yeah, I think it's all shot well.
- 32:35I think it's a great scene. I think it's just portraying
- 32:37that man, No one is safe from this, not even the great Max,
- 32:41because I know you had some real issues in the first one.
- 32:43When Goose. Yeah.
- 32:45He avoided death and then 6 seconds later he was dead.
- 32:48Anyways. I didn't mind it.
- 32:50I went on a different angle on it to why they did that little
- 32:53misdirection, which I appreciate.
- 32:55I just think, like, if you're going to build them up, do
- 32:59better by him, they're going to have a scene that lasts a few
- 33:02minutes in a fairly short movie about will he or won't he stay?
- 33:07You got to stay. You gotta stay.
- 33:08You see the baby. And he's back 2 minutes later.
- 33:10And then he. Leaves and you're like OK, well
- 33:12this is the rift and then the next act will be how that rift
- 33:15gets repaired. In fact, 8 seconds later he's
- 33:18left for dead. And then a minute and 1/2 or two
- 33:20minutes or 5 minutes after that, he's back at the refinery with
- 33:24the cause. Gyro Captain saved him, flew him
- 33:26in and flew him back. Good guy.
- 33:28So it just, it's like you're creating drama, but you're
- 33:31puncturing that drama so quickly that it's like, well, why even
- 33:33bother then? Why not just let him be?
- 33:36Just say yes at the beginning because nothing is changing in
- 33:38between. That's dramatic, that's
- 33:40compelling, that is interesting, that is unique from a
- 33:44storytelling perspective or even a filmmaking.
- 33:46There's no shots like, just nothing about this other than a
- 33:48nice practical effect of a car rolling and all.
- 33:50That that's what I'm talking about, right?
- 33:52You just answered your own question.
- 33:53All that is to say, he's back in Gastown, the story short, beaten
- 33:57down, battered. He kind of looks like French
- 34:00Stewart with that one eye. Now.
- 34:02I thought that was a character choice in Third Rock from the
- 34:05Sun. Yes.
- 34:06Yeah, but it's a birth defect. It's something else cause he's
- 34:11always like that swirly. I don't think he has to be.
- 34:14I've seen him open them up, but I guess I don't have eyes.
- 34:16Yeah, there's like a muscle issue and it could be in there.
- 34:20But now he wants to drive. You have a problem with that?
- 34:23Because he didn't want it before.
- 34:24He doesn't really give us a reason why he wants to do it
- 34:26now. These are my issues man.
- 34:27Maybe because he doesn't have vehicles like, well, at least I
- 34:29get to. Drive maybe?
- 34:31Everything about this movie that I don't like exists in this 5 or
- 34:356 * 6 minutes. OK, None of these choices make
- 34:37any sense. And I like to recognize that
- 34:42choices are made in a movie and live in that world, and it's
- 34:45fine. And you have to accept certain
- 34:46things to be. Yeah.
- 34:47But when you're throwing the foundation of your movie into
- 34:52this moment, is he or is he not going to stay?
- 34:54Against, you're putting a lot of not talking to.
- 34:56That it's the choice. It's the whole rest of the movie
- 34:58is predicated on this decision. And we just rolls out of bed,
- 35:02barely alive and says, I'll do it.
- 35:06What is the motivating factor? What changed your mind?
- 35:09Is it a suicide mission? Are you broken down?
- 35:11You've lost charger your car, your.
- 35:13Dog was the Dodge Charger. Yeah, OK.
- 35:15You're in a position of maybe it's over and now you're
- 35:18choosing to do the rig cause it's a suicide mission.
- 35:21OK that makes sense to me. You've lost everything now.
- 35:24Yeah, but it's not really. Portrayed, but it's not conveyed
- 35:26at all, and it doesn't lose anything later.
- 35:29Yeah, I I see it more now. I want characters to mean
- 35:33something, even if they're just there for being.
- 35:35There. Yeah.
- 35:36From a storytelling perspective, I think you're right.
- 35:39I think what I latched on to where my brain went was the fact
- 35:44that anything could happen. It doesn't matter your Mad Max,
- 35:47you can still get run off the road.
- 35:48We saw in the first movie struggles with the same thing.
- 35:51So that might be his weakness as a storyteller.
- 35:54I think partly because this movie does what the first one
- 35:57does better than the first one. This sticks out more as lazy,
- 36:01Yeah. Whereas certain elements of the
- 36:02first one, I thought, well, these are choices that are being
- 36:04made that make sense. Max loses his wife and family,
- 36:06then like OHT, that motivates. When Goose dies, that motivates.
- 36:11Yeah, there's no motivation here.
- 36:20They self destruct like the Enterprise in Star Trek 3
- 36:24Gastown. Yeah, they commit.
- 36:27They're yeah, they're it. We're out, We're going to blow
- 36:28it up and we're going to take the rig and we're going to go.
- 36:31Max is going to drive it. That's what he said.
- 36:33Healthy, can't see out of one eye.
- 36:35He's going to be the linchpin of the whole.
- 36:37Thing that's how bad of a driver Zeta is.
- 36:40Farsighted. I don't know.
- 36:42Don't wear glasses you know. It's post op, post op post
- 36:45optic. It's post op.
- 36:48It's post clock. It's post apocalyptic.
- 36:53There. I got it.
- 36:54Nailed it. Yeah.
- 36:55It took how many takes? At least 5 and it wasn't pretty.
- 36:59And this is Mad Max, like I think this is.
- 37:03Fury Rd. It's the Fury Rd. portion of
- 37:05the. Film and it's a.
- 37:06Good chunk of them it's about 28 minutes.
- 37:08And I have to tell it as a blanket statement.
- 37:10I was pretty impressed with this being from 1981, the effects are
- 37:16using, the lack of CGI, everything.
- 37:18But maybe one thing that I didn't really necessarily like
- 37:21in this, but I was really impressed.
- 37:24Yeah, it's really, really great filmmaking.
- 37:26Yeah, this is where he shines again, storytelling wise.
- 37:29Some shortcomings there, but maybe he's like, I, I want to
- 37:33get to this now. He's definitely a.
- 37:34Visionary in that capacity and like you're saying using the.
- 37:37Landscape for its full potential, yeah, and makes this
- 37:41job a little bit. Easier total, Sure.
- 37:43Yeah. And the cars are unique in their
- 37:44looks and the characters are unique in their looks, and the
- 37:48attacks are pretty compelling different.
- 37:51Types of vehicles, different methods they're climbing on to
- 37:54the truck. Yeah, the barbed wire around the
- 37:56rig is kind of a fun thing. Didn't pan out, you know, But
- 38:01yeah, so I just thought, like, there's enough variety in the
- 38:04vehicles and then the types of attacks and deaths and whatever
- 38:07else that occur to keep it fresh.
- 38:09And not unlike Fury Road, again you're watching that for most of
- 38:13the movie is wow this is really cool and I felt the same vibes
- 38:17from this one for sure. Yeah, pacing much better in this
- 38:20movie overall. Yeah, almost to a fault, some
- 38:23would say. Yeah, too fast.
- 38:25I love the firework in this movie.
- 38:26I know we've already seen a lot of it back at Gastown.
- 38:29That's a good defence system. I think that is all.
- 38:32Well done with people on fire burning.
- 38:35I think even Gyro Captain drops a fire bomb.
- 38:39Good move. Yeah.
- 38:40Do you have anything that sort of stands out in terms of the
- 38:42attacks? Do you have anything particular
- 38:44that you enjoyed? Speaking of fire, when the guy's
- 38:46hands were on fire and he wasn't really taking it that serious.
- 38:49No. I don't know, I.
- 38:51Was struck me as odd. It was.
- 38:53I was really just kind of like, yeah, what?
- 38:55But I liked it from a character perspective.
- 38:57Sure, sure. He was obviously in love with
- 38:59whomever fell off the. Was he wasn't sure.
- 39:01Look pretty sad he tried to save her.
- 39:03Afterward, looking to be sad regardless by default.
- 39:06You don't wanna lose those ones. Yeah, but no, this is where we
- 39:10do get some death scenes, some characters.
- 39:12Yeah, I would say most, yeah, Most of them even.
- 39:15Yeah, Yeah. Goes down.
- 39:16Yeah. It's an arrow to the back.
- 39:18I think that arrow work in this, which I appreciate.
- 39:20It yeah, not a lot available, no.
- 39:22Everyone have a nice pistol like humongous there.
- 39:26It's true. One thing I do want to note,
- 39:27there's special features on the 4K.
- 39:29OK? I didn't purposely watch them.
- 39:31It ran afterwards, OK. And I was up getting a coffee or
- 39:34cookies, grilled cheese or something.
- 39:36Oreos. And if you recall, the one
- 39:39scene, I'm not sure exactly where it was, might have been
- 39:40actually much earlier, but the guy gets launched into the air
- 39:46and flips over. That stunt guy was injured.
- 39:50No shit. Yeah, for real.
- 39:51But what was injured was a piece of something that was in his
- 39:56body from a previous injury, and that was the only thing that
- 39:59broke. Wow.
- 40:00Piece of metal that he had from a previous.
- 40:03Exactly. Interesting.
- 40:05Yeah, that flip. I don't know.
- 40:06I would have thought that would have been a dummy.
- 40:08I didn't like one right? Like I would have thought that
- 40:11just because of the size and the scope of it, it's hard to get
- 40:14the weight right. I guess it totally is.
- 40:16You can always tell. It, but at least part of it was.
- 40:19Legit crazy. I'm not surprised because of the
- 40:21nature of this filmmaker and the way that these movies are done,
- 40:23but that's very impressive to. Me and you can't tell like you
- 40:27would have the guy that fell off that got the hook in.
- 40:29Yeah. And he gets lit up with fire.
- 40:31Like they shoot in a way where like, clearly it's not anything
- 40:34but. It's the magic of movies.
- 40:35Yeah, that kind of stuff. It's part of why I love horror
- 40:38movies so much is that is how you can convince me that this
- 40:41person is dying when I know they're not.
- 40:43Dying, and this has an element of that.
- 40:45Yeah, it's obviously a little more bombastic than a horror
- 40:47movie, but the principles are still the same.
- 40:49Make me believe what is happening is happening.
- 40:51And we have like a biker just gets this, turns the wrong way
- 40:55and gets run over. Gets caught in the wheels with
- 40:57all these different kind of ways.
- 40:58It's really evocative and it goes a good pace.
- 41:01The only challenge I have when things like this is who's who,
- 41:05and I thought they did a pretty good job of when Zeta goes, he
- 41:09gets a moment to acknowledge, let's say, that he was.
- 41:12Dispatched. Yeah, sometimes that doesn't.
- 41:14Happen. Yeah, like it would be too fast,
- 41:16the camera works too quick, quick edits, whatever.
- 41:17You earned it and it's not later and you're like oh, I guess they
- 41:20died too or whomever. I didn't.
- 41:22See it? I didn't check it off.
- 41:23Oh wait, OK, he works a little. Bit, you know, some of the
- 41:25geography gets a little messed up, right?
- 41:26But I thought this movie holds to that very well.
- 41:28And everybody that sort of matters, let's say, in terms of
- 41:31the plotting, has a moment to at least acknowledge they lived or
- 41:34they died. And I thought that was
- 41:35important. Did you know herpes guy died?
- 41:37Yeah, well, you know, I'm talking about the guy had the
- 41:39cold lower right there. I don't know, you know, called
- 41:43Murphy's guy. OK.
- 41:44But the question I have for you, because I have questions, yes,
- 41:47is Wes. Yeah.
- 41:49We think has perished. Here we watch him basically get.
- 41:53Yeah, killed. Somewhat underwhelming, sure,
- 41:55but he comes back to life. You stuck.
- 41:58There in the grill of the car, Yeah, Indiana Jones and.
- 42:01It can happen. Sure, it's good enough for Andy.
- 42:04Yes. Also 81 actually rated all.
- 42:05Star now I'm OK with him being that's what movies do they of
- 42:09course they're back. That's not over anticlimax.
- 42:12I don't understand, Mr. Humongous, his reasoning for the
- 42:17collision course. I don't know with the Mack
- 42:19truck. You got options, buddy.
- 42:21You're not gonna win that one. No.
- 42:23And you're a smart guy. You're the leader of this group.
- 42:25You've got this exact orchestrated.
- 42:27He's displayed a lot of intelligence.
- 42:30He's a good leader. Yeah, I honestly think he is.
- 42:32I don't. And it's not reasonable.
- 42:34Yeah, little more than Hemsworth, I think.
- 42:35Yeah, but I don't get his logic to that move.
- 42:40Like, I like how he hits Wes. I mean, that's cool, but he
- 42:43knows the truck is there. Yeah.
- 42:44What's your end? Game.
- 42:45Yeah, I don't really understand. It's a note that I have as well.
- 42:48It's a cataclysm. It blows up.
- 42:50It's cool thing, it's nice to look at, but it just doesn't
- 42:52make sense. You're not doing that.
- 42:53Yeah, and why storytelling, that's why.
- 42:55If at the end of the day, you want to end your movie, or at
- 42:59least end the sort of battle, if you will, with something so
- 43:02implausible and silly, those are the kinds of things like I
- 43:04mentioned earlier. It's like, why are you doing
- 43:06this? If you want to get to the end,
- 43:08there's ways to get there that makes sense.
- 43:10This didn't make sense other than just spectacle, and they're
- 43:13not. The rest of the movie has some
- 43:15spectacle in it, but it's grounded enough to make it
- 43:17reasonable, whereas these kinds of choices don't.
- 43:20And so I like the visual of it, but it leaves me really
- 43:25questioning why any of it is happening, particularly at the.
- 43:28End. I think that's one thing he was
- 43:29able to finally be successful at.
- 43:31Injury Rd. You might be right actually.
- 43:33I don't think you'd have to listen to it.
- 43:35It is in the archives, Yeah. I don't think we question any of
- 43:38what we've questioned in any of other of these movies.
- 43:41I think you're right. I think it's probably at least
- 43:43so far it is the best executed version.
- 43:46Of these movies, however, I think the end end, if you're not
- 43:51thinking about sequels or any of that, like this movie standing
- 43:54alone, of course, I think they do end it successfully with
- 43:59there being no gas in this truck being a misdirection because I
- 44:03like misdirections. I said it earlier, I'm going to
- 44:05stand by it and they have the gas and the other little
- 44:09vehicles that no one was paying attention to because you know,
- 44:13Bannons aren't necessarily the smartest guys.
- 44:16Humongous is, but who knows, you know?
- 44:19The first watch and it's my own fault probably, but there's a
- 44:24way at the end. I read it originally just
- 44:27instinctively, maybe not originally not to its end, but
- 44:30in the moment I didn't catch that the gas was in the cars and
- 44:35I just saw the dirt, you know, the the sand coming out of the
- 44:40shaker and I thought to myself it was all for nothing.
- 44:44So I actually looked at it more from an existential like after
- 44:48all the death, after all the, you know, blew up the refinery,
- 44:51you did all the. Things you'd like that one I.
- 44:53Did I thought, oh what a bold choice.
- 44:56Yeah, that you liked. And then Max is almost like, I
- 44:58thought, like, almost chuckling to himself, like, after all
- 45:01that, and he's sort of standing there.
- 45:03I don't know that I would have liked that ending better.
- 45:05I don't want to suggest that. But for a moment I was like,
- 45:08that's bold. That's good for you, though,
- 45:09because you get to feel. That, yeah.
- 45:11And then also. Be but actually get what it
- 45:13really should be. Yeah.
- 45:14So yeah, that's a win. For I got to feel their
- 45:16misdirection, but also got a moment of, yeah, interesting,
- 45:19and then obviously backtracked. But what are your thoughts on
- 45:22the sort of closing voiceover? You know, we had a little bit at
- 45:24the beginning of the ending. Here.
- 45:25Yeah, that's where this movie loses all credibility.
- 45:28Talk right here. Goodness.
- 45:29Well, I've loved the Gyro Captain.
- 45:31We didn't give him his due. For his name, you know, right?
- 45:36When I watched the first time when he went down, yeah, I
- 45:39thought to myself, there's no way he survived that, just the
- 45:42way it looked. Why should the second time,
- 45:44like, OK, no, there's room to say, OK, you made it and this is
- 45:48still flyable. Sure.
- 45:49So I ended up being OK with that.
- 45:51My real issue is, is I didn't see him as a leader.
- 45:56He's a great guy to have a hype man.
- 45:58He's a good hype man, absolutely.
- 46:00And he'll save you when you need him.
- 46:02He's Johnny on the spot. He's.
- 46:04Help them. Yeah, Well, get more credit than
- 46:07that. But in the voice over at the
- 46:09end, he becomes the leader. They acknowledgement that he
- 46:13takes over for Zeta and acts. Basically, and I really don't
- 46:17see that in his character. And then after that we have the
- 46:20kid who's is the voice over real.
- 46:23Yeah, yeah, he eventually does become the leader, and I'm
- 46:26perfectly fine with that. So he's got leadership.
- 46:29Material he does well, we don't. Know got the boomerang?
- 46:32And everybody exactly. But the interim, they don't.
- 46:37But I don't buy. Yeah, that word came to me
- 46:39finally. I don't see it.
- 46:41I guess it's not a big deal like.
- 46:43Just do you railed the whole. Movie well.
- 46:44You said it, I mean. Like like you said earlier, it's
- 46:47just kind of sticking something together to make something try
- 46:49to work. But whatever.
- 46:50I mean, we're never going to see Max again.
- 46:52Doesn't matter. Yeah.
- 46:53I thought that was interesting and I wondered, we talked about
- 46:55this, you know, movies are made in the vacuum.
- 46:58There's certain movies that, you know, are built for a sequel.
- 47:01Yeah, that's designed that way or they acknowledge certainly in
- 47:03the later years once we get to sort of mid to late 80s.
- 47:06That's all planned out. Yeah, certainly part because
- 47:09it's based on a larger, you know that there's other books, so you
- 47:11can kind of assume it. But in the late 80s you kind of
- 47:13recognize movies are made more for sequel potential, let's say.
- 47:17Yeah. And in this early days, I
- 47:20believe fully that the original Mad Max was made in a vacuum.
- 47:24This sequel based on success was like, oh, we'll do this.
- 47:28I wonder if because the next one comes out for many years, I
- 47:33think 5 or 6 years. Which makes you think maybe they
- 47:35didn't have an original. Plan for it and the new story.
- 47:38When they say this at, you know, we never saw Max again and this
- 47:41and that, you get the impression that this is the end of it.
- 47:44And for me, because the first movie doesn't seem to matter in
- 47:47terms of my appreciation of the second one, it's almost like,
- 47:49well, this is its standalone story and I'm fine with that.
- 47:53Now, when you watch it, you obviously know that there's a
- 47:56third one at some point. Do you feel like this movie
- 47:59leaves it open-ended enough to warrant the sequel, or are you
- 48:02thinking at least at first watch?
- 48:04If it ends, I'm fine. Like it makes sense to me.
- 48:07Well, it reminded me of Friday the 13th, when you leave it and
- 48:11you have to fix it. Yeah, I think you can say that
- 48:14like we never. I never saw Mad Max again,
- 48:16because maybe he didn't. Sure, Australia's pretty big.
- 48:20You know, first hand, I've been there.
- 48:21Yeah. Hotel room anyway.
- 48:23Yeah. So.
- 48:24I got the impression that this was going to be it.
- 48:27Yeah, I think it does stand alone as a movie without the
- 48:31first one, which out the third one.
- 48:32However, because I've enjoyed this movie, this character, like
- 48:37I'll watch another one knowing in the back of your mind that
- 48:41we've already peaked and that's the problem.
- 48:44It'll be different. Thunderdome.
- 48:45Sure. But I I'm pretty sure.
- 48:47Have you seen it? No.
- 48:49OK. But from the rumblings
- 48:52scuttlebutt and I'm meeting is that this is it.
- 48:56Road Warrior is like the Mad Max movie.
- 48:59I mean, certainly better than the first one.
- 49:01Certainly. Yeah.
- 49:02And I'd be curious cause the next movie Gibson is in his,
- 49:05yeah, full Gibson mode, right? Like at this point, he's still
- 49:08very young. One question if they abandon the
- 49:11character a little bit and just come up like Thunderdome seems
- 49:13like a weird name like they're. I don't know.
- 49:16You're not. It's not.
- 49:17It's you're beyond Thunderdome. You're not even at the Thunder.
- 49:20You're beyond. I just have a feeling the
- 49:22setting of it isn't going to be what I necessarily want, but
- 49:26we'll see. I'll bring it off.
- 49:27Sounds like you've read too much already.
- 49:29Maybe probably another like a month or two.
- 49:32It'll come off spoiler. Well, that's your tease.
- 49:34Yeah, give me your tease for what we have coming out next
- 49:38week. Well, I mentioned earlier that
- 49:41we were on the brink, still are. And I think I'm going to take a
- 49:44movie off the shelf that best represents being on the brink.
- 49:48Is it with a money truck? Brinks, Brinks.
- 49:51Now it's not OK, but you know it.
- 49:54It fits into not only the world we're living in, OK, but the
- 49:58world this movie is living in, and we're going right to the.
- 50:01Edge right to the edge. Looking forward to it, Phillip.
