- 0:00I was consistent, but I never wanted you to know who I was.
- 0:03Okay, that makes sense. I don't want you to know.
- 0:05I don't want you to know how happy we are.
- 0:07I don't want you to know how confident we are Rivals.
- 0:10You know how arrogant we are, but there was never a time that
- 0:13we went to the racetrack that we didn't think we were going to
- 0:15whip. Your like there was never a time
- 0:18that we didn't think it but we never wanted to show it right?
- 0:22Like you always wanted to have that confidence but you never
- 0:25wanted it to be arrogant and cocky because the karma train
- 0:28might just run you over, right? I'm right in the middle of the
- 0:30intersection. It's the Kenny Wallace
- 0:33conversation brought to you by Jegs.
- 0:36Hello everyone and welcome to the Kenny Wallace show brought
- 0:40to you by Jegs the leader in high performance.
- 0:43Aftermarket car parts. Remember to go to jegs.com for
- 0:48anything and everything you need for your vehicle.
- 0:52I always say this is the moment where I pause, when we have the
- 0:55great ones on the Kenny conversation man, I'm excited
- 1:00again. I'm always excited every show
- 1:02because this guy has done it all Kevin.
- 1:05Kevin Harvick thank you for being on no problem.
- 1:09I'm looking forward to it. You know what?
- 1:11Because I never know what to expect from you and that's what
- 1:14makes things way more fun. And I know you won't you're
- 1:17going to shoot it to me straight.
- 1:18So I'm looking forward to having a nice talk today and Seeing
- 1:22what we can, what kind of trouble we can cause today,
- 1:25right? And I do know you're a
- 1:27troublemaker, and we'll talk about that way, but I thought
- 1:30that was you. Hey, hold on.
- 1:32Now, remember years ago, you had the nickname.
- 1:35You were the punk? Yeah, that's okay.
- 1:37It never was years ago. I had a, I had a, I did a media
- 1:41tour today and I had one of the, one of the common questions that
- 1:45I get is, what would the 47 year old?
- 1:48Kevin Harvick, tell the 25 year old.
- 1:50Kevin Harvick. And I was like, I'm not sure
- 1:54that the 25 year old Kevin Harvick would listen to the 47
- 1:57year old because that's just the way that it works.
- 2:00And if it wasn't for all the 25 year old mistakes, you'd never
- 2:04get to the wisdom of 47. So I just I don't think we
- 2:07should talk. I agree with that.
- 2:10You know, we change so much. And I've always learned years
- 2:14ago, there was at phrase, life's a journey.
- 2:17And one thing I've learned it is a journey because we aren't born
- 2:2140 years, Old, that will be a big shortcut.
- 2:24Yeah. And you know, for me, it's been
- 2:27my racing career in general has been, it's been strange because
- 2:31of the way that it started and when you when you when you look
- 2:35back I shouldn't say the where it started but where it started
- 2:37in my cup career, because my first interview was my first
- 2:42press conference was the biggest press conference that I ever
- 2:44did. My first win was by far, the
- 2:47biggest winning moment that I've ever had, and that was all
- 2:51because of Of the way that that you went into the car but then
- 2:54it all backed up from, from there, you know, because of, you
- 2:58know, you make a mistake here and you say something wrong and
- 3:01you, you make this fan base mad and that fan base map.
- 3:04These people like it. Those people don't like it and I
- 3:06had to learn all those. I had to learn all those life
- 3:09lessons along the way. With the Earnhardt, fanbase
- 3:13following you along the way and critiquing you.
- 3:16So it was, you know, it all it, all kind of started.
- 3:21And so you had to learn quickly, how to navigate the landscape of
- 3:26NASCAR racing and Earnhardt Nation there.
- 3:30Let's remind everybody, what happened?
- 3:32We lost the great, Dale, Earnhardt, senior Richard
- 3:35Childress has, you're going to drive this car at Atlanta?
- 3:39You drive it, you win the race. Now with us, reminding everybody
- 3:44that Did you didn't start your cut career, the way that you
- 3:51really wanted, or can that be controlled?
- 3:55No, and really, you know, it all started when Dale died at the
- 4:00Daytona, 500, and I got the call actually laying in bed on a
- 4:04Wednesday night. Richard called me and said, hey,
- 4:06I need you to, I need you to come to the shop.
- 4:08So I lived I lived, right? Right down the street, from,
- 4:12from the shop at that particular time.
- 4:13So I drove to the office and I I walked in his office and it was
- 4:17him sit behind his desk and Bobby Hutchins and, and, you
- 4:22know, Kevin Hamlin. And I walked in and sat down and
- 4:27they said, hey we want you to, we want you to drive this, this
- 4:30car this weekend at Rockingham, and at that point I had already
- 4:33told my wife before I left I said, hey they're going to,
- 4:35they're going to ask me to drive this car this weekend.
- 4:37I'm going to drive it and so I told him I'd drive it.
- 4:40And I just, we never talked about anything else.
- 4:43We didn't talk about contracts money, it was at that particular
- 4:46point. It was all about.
- 4:47What can I do? What is right for our CR.
- 4:52I've been here for a year and a half and and I'd actually been
- 4:56doing all the testing for Dale at that particular time in the
- 4:59three car with his team. So I knew the team so it wasn't
- 5:04really, there was no decision to be made, it was just do
- 5:07whatever. So, we went to the racetrack
- 5:10that particular weekend and and, you know, ran the race and then
- 5:15the line and I flew out and got married on Wednesday.
- 5:18Oh my, I didn't know that hole. Yeah.
- 5:20Yeah. You win Atlanta.
- 5:22No, no, no. You won't know I erased my very
- 5:26first Cup Race at Rockingham, right?
- 5:28We left that night and had the whole team and my family and her
- 5:32family. We all flew to Las Vegas, oh my
- 5:35poor, the for, what would have been the third race of the
- 5:37season in my second race? We got married on Wednesday
- 5:40night and I got my first top 10 on Sunday in Las Vegas.
- 5:46When we flew home and got my first win the next week.
- 5:49At Atlanta. So it was a big it was a big
- 5:51three weeks. Okay.
- 5:52This is something I never knew. It's not important for me to
- 5:56know everything whatsoever and I think somehow that slid under
- 5:59the radar to a lot of fans. So at that time, first of all
- 6:04want to back up because this is Kenny conversation, we just go,
- 6:08we you started this, I love this because I've learned so much, so
- 6:14So this is during a tough time and yet you're getting married,
- 6:17which is the happiest Time of Your Life.
- 6:20Did you have to balance that? Well, when you go back and you
- 6:26look at it all and it was really one of the best things that
- 6:29happened during that particular time frame.
- 6:32Because I had my whole team there Richard was there, you
- 6:35know, we just, we had just gone through, we just gone through
- 6:39everything with with, with Dale and All the downtime and so it
- 6:45gave the team a chance to come out to the right to Las Vegas
- 6:50and not have to worry about the race and not have to worry about
- 6:52everything that happened with Dale and everything that had
- 6:54gone on because of the fact that we were getting married and we
- 6:57were going to have a good time and we were going to get our
- 6:59minds off of it. So so we got married and the one
- 7:05of the one other funny story that we had that weekend,
- 7:07Richard, I think he was born in nineteen.
- 7:11So I want to say 40, I don't know.
- 7:13See something and Richard bought this bottle of wine and it was
- 7:18the year that he was born. I can't remember how much money
- 7:20he paid for this bottle of wine a lot probably.
- 7:23Yeah, probably a lot. So if I'm home, and I was flying
- 7:27with Richard because I didn't have any way to get to the
- 7:29racetrack. So I was flying home with
- 7:30Richard. He was telling me about this
- 7:31bottle of wine and he said, you win a race.
- 7:34This year, we're going to drink this bottle of wine.
- 7:37I had never drank wine in my life.
- 7:39The only thing I drink up until that point was the cheapest beer
- 7:42that I could find And Blue Ribbon.
- 7:44Yeah, like that. So I went and won the race next
- 7:52week and I reminded him. I said, hey, we're going to
- 7:54drink that bottle of wine because I knew that the last
- 7:56thing he wanted to do was open that bottle of wine and I was
- 7:59going to make him open that bottle of wine after we won
- 8:02Atlanta. So I go to, we go to his house
- 8:04for dinner, and he is nervous, is crap opening this bottle of
- 8:08wine because he knew it wasn't supposed to be open.
- 8:11Kenny, we went through this process.
- 8:13SS for probably 30 minutes of him trying to figure out how he
- 8:17was going to open this bottle of wine.
- 8:18He puts the cork opener in there and the cork just immediately
- 8:22just crumbles, we strain it, and strain it and strain it.
- 8:26And we finally drink the bottle of wine and I didn't think it
- 8:29was very good but it was well worth.
- 8:31It was well worth the effort to drink just because of the of the
- 8:36promise and the situation. So so yeah.
- 8:39It was those, those, those three weeks.
- 8:43You know, I don't know if you've ever gone back and watched that
- 8:46press conference at Rockingham, but I mean, it was, it was
- 8:51nothing like I've ever experienced in my life.
- 8:53It was just a, it was a dark rainy.
- 8:55Gloomy day, appropriate. They it was very appropriate and
- 9:00it had this makeup, you know, pop up tent that they had put in
- 9:04because they had so many media that were coming to cover it.
- 9:07And I just remember looking out into that crowd of media and
- 9:11just you know, I had no clue what was What I was going to say
- 9:14or what I was going to do and I knew none of them were there.
- 9:18You know, because they wanted to wanted to be there, but it was
- 9:22there were some, there were some interesting times but really we
- 9:25made it through that year because we decided to run all
- 9:29the Busch races. We ran all the Cup races.
- 9:31There were no testing limits at that particular point.
- 9:34So we tested the cup car, we tested the Xfinity car and they
- 9:39basically they basically sent us off.
- 9:41They basically sent me off. To race as much as I could, we
- 9:46ran our first truck race that year for cage.
- 9:48I at at at Richmond. And we had honestly myself and
- 9:57Delana and really the guys that I raced with, on the, on the
- 10:01Busch Series car at the time, we had no idea, really the
- 10:04magnitude of what was happening. All we did was race, every all
- 10:09the problems were masked until 2002 and then the bottom fell
- 10:13out. Trying to trying to trying to
- 10:16address everything that we had in address the year before.
- 10:20So I want to go back to that wine for a minute.
- 10:23Did he ever two questions about the wine?
- 10:26Did he tell you how much money he paid for that wine bottle?
- 10:29I swear it was like fifteen thousand dollars of the time I
- 10:33was here, sludge in the bottom of it.
- 10:36There was sludge in the bottom of it, there was sad, I just
- 10:39want to tell clogging it was clunky and bad.
- 10:43It was underneath it was, it was never intended to open.
- 10:47Never intended, nor there's probably Never intended to drink
- 10:51but we were drinking it. Okay, so let's go back to what
- 10:56you talked about that rainy day at Rockingham.
- 10:59So I've been a big fan of yours for years.
- 11:03I think it's just because you kind of remind me of myself
- 11:06growing up kind of a scrapper, you know, just doing your deal.
- 11:11I was born in 63. I know you're a lot younger than
- 11:14me but I've always liked your way.
- 11:16So, I haven't got to start the interview by the way.
- 11:22You're awesome. You're Chatty Cathy today.
- 11:24I love you, you're badass. So we get to that that
- 11:28Rockingham deal. We go through this whole first
- 11:30part at when when did, when did you realize right away?
- 11:36That this was, this was like a dream.
- 11:38This is not not the dream, you intended.
- 11:42At what point at what weekend? Did you go, man?
- 11:45This was never planned. Well it was never planned but I
- 11:52was pretty embedded into the whole thing already you know
- 11:55because Dale didn't want to do any of the testing and the team
- 11:59needed to get better. So in 2000 really at the end of
- 12:03spring we I got pushed off into testing Dale's car.
- 12:11So basically at that particular time, we were just developing
- 12:15all the 14 shocks, the three fives and a to you are I said
- 12:18this but you feel like you already.
- 12:20What you're saying is you you were in Dale seniors car
- 12:23embedded in it. Yeah, well I was embedded in the
- 12:25team and so you know, I think I think for me there were a lot of
- 12:30things that I didn't have to get used to because of the fact that
- 12:34I had already been around his team, I had already been to the
- 12:36racetrack with with those guys. And and Todd barrier was a big
- 12:41part of really Bridging, the Gap of the things that I didn't know
- 12:46or when I would get frustrated mad.
- 12:48With with particular things or bringing information over from
- 12:51the Busch Series car. Todd barrier was was one of the
- 12:55biggest keys to that whole program because of the fact that
- 13:00you know, he had worked at our CR since probably 1995.
- 13:04I'd say with Skinner's truck and in the Fab shop and all the
- 13:08things that they were doing on Jace otters deal, but he was
- 13:13kind of that bridge because really Kevin, Hamlin, great guy.
- 13:18But that whole team was built around Dale.
- 13:20Yeah, but Todd knew all those guys because he had worked there
- 13:25and he was he be the one to kind of to kind of smooth things over
- 13:29when I would get wound up because I was wound up all the
- 13:31time and, you know, just on the chip ready to go and wanted
- 13:35things to move. And, and so, you know, those
- 13:39guys and I guess the point of this is, I was already.
- 13:44I already knew everybody on the team already.
- 13:46I've already for the job. I was, I was if that if that's
- 13:50what I needed to do, I was ready to go and my seats are, we're
- 13:54already in the cars. You know, we'd already been at
- 13:57the race tracks and and we had already been testing and I
- 14:01think, you know, for me, we would spend days and days, and
- 14:06days at Kentucky, developing shocks and springs.
- 14:08And you know, the first time that that Dale got to drive it,
- 14:12they went to the Indianapolis test and everything that we had
- 14:15developed at Indy or at Kentucky.
- 14:18Took 2nd and when they took it 2nd Dale got he shook his car
- 14:22down and then they they took my car out that we had been
- 14:25developing with GM. And his guys at the racetrack
- 14:29went like nine tenths of a second faster than his car did
- 14:33and he said well what's in it for Springs and they told him I
- 14:37at that time it was like three fives and a to and Randall all
- 14:40the new crazy stuff in it re Z and he said put that thing back
- 14:44in the truck. I'm not driving it.
- 14:48Right now, it's because because because because he you know
- 14:54those, I mean he's probably a lot like Rusty was, you know,
- 14:57you had this spring and this spring and this bringing this
- 14:59spring and you could change it a few, a few hundred pounds in
- 15:03each Direction. But when you started talking
- 15:04stuff like that, you know, the motor was all raised up and it
- 15:08had all the new, you know, the new direction of the sport, he
- 15:14was not thrilled about them, not telling him what was in that
- 15:17car, but it was way. A faster.
- 15:20So we started out early in your career.
- 15:22Let's move forward a little bit now with the Kenny conversation.
- 15:27Well, before we move further that all your stories, remind me
- 15:30of this, we assume everybody knows everything but they don't.
- 15:36Where did happy Harvick this? Legendary nickname.
- 15:40What day when do you remember? Happy Harvick that who named you
- 15:44that? What was that all about though?
- 15:46That all started look, we were all hired.
- 15:49Into I guess in the 1999 is myself and Todd barrier.
- 15:55I guess, Mike Dillon was the driver of the, of the, the 21
- 15:59car in those days. Lamps was Lance's.
- 16:04Last name deters. Anyway.
- 16:08I can't the whole team the whole, the whole team was hired
- 16:11and we were just a bunch of young kids and but we had
- 16:15nicknames for everything. And so for me, every time I came
- 16:18in this, Shop. I was happy.
- 16:20So I'd be bouncing around and they called me happy.
- 16:25So, that's if you see my pit sign today.
- 16:28That smiley face, that's where it started.
- 16:30And I've kept that smiley face from the year 2000 all the way
- 16:34until today. That's, that's, that's been the,
- 16:37the happy smiley face, but it all started it in the in the
- 16:41bush shop at RC are, they called me happy because every time I
- 16:43walk in the shop I was happy and that makes me happy because I
- 16:47that makes me happy. You thought it was some
- 16:49sarcastic BS around. I think I thought we were mad
- 16:54one day and they did the, you know, it's like the big guy that
- 16:57called tiny. Yeah, I thought you were, here's
- 17:00why in this, this is another conversation whenever you one
- 17:05from day. One from my perspective, when I
- 17:09would see you win. You are always consistent in my
- 17:13book. Now when you went back to Delana
- 17:15in the motor home and then when the kids came along, Tell me
- 17:20are, were you always in Victory Lane?
- 17:22You're always seeing the same. Never seems like you celebrated
- 17:25more or less. So, were you always like that or
- 17:30do were there wins that you were more excited about?
- 17:36I think for, I think for me, I think the one thing that a lot
- 17:42of people don't realize you are consistent in your happiness, is
- 17:45what I'm saying? I was I was consistent, but I
- 17:47never wanted you to know who I was.
- 17:49Okay, that makes sense. I don't want you to know.
- 17:52I don't want you to know how happy we are.
- 17:54I don't want you to know how confident we are.
- 17:56Right? I won't, you know how arrogant
- 17:57we are? But there was never a time that
- 18:00we went to the racetrack that we didn't think we were going to
- 18:02whip your ass. Like there was never a time that
- 18:05we didn't think it but we never wanted to show it, right?
- 18:08Like you always wanted to have that confidence.
- 18:10Vince. But you never wanted it to be
- 18:12arrogant and cocky because the karma train might just run you
- 18:15over, right, right in the middle of the intersection.
- 18:17And, you know, I just really from the very beginning.
- 18:21I think that's something that carried over, probably from.
- 18:26Probably, from back in the day, with my dad, like you just
- 18:32always just wanted to just absolutely annihilate anybody
- 18:35anytime if you had that opportunity but when you, when
- 18:39you were the one getting annihilated, You never wanted to
- 18:41know that it was bothering you. Yeah, you didn't get me.
- 18:44I still win. Yeah.
- 18:45Yeah, you're right. It's not you.
- 18:47Yeah. And so I think for me and that's
- 18:50what's been fun about this year, I don't have to worry about next
- 18:53year is now you can do all these stories because I mean a lot of
- 18:58it is a show. Kenny.
- 19:00Yeah, right. Like it's really just a it's a
- 19:03mental game of, you know, all these guys are friends and even
- 19:07if we were friends, like I'm never going to open that door
- 19:10all the way. Way to actually let you know how
- 19:12this functions because I want to help you but I don't want to
- 19:16help you enough to where you can beat me.
- 19:18Because what we have is is a good system and good people, and
- 19:23good things. But in order for the food to
- 19:25keep coming on the table and everything, keep needing to keep
- 19:29showing up, I need to keep beating you.
- 19:31So, I've always been very cautious about exactly how far
- 19:36you open that door to, to your competitors.
- 19:40I Like what you said so to Capital like that.
- 19:44My brother Rusty says, well, you come up with these fancy words
- 19:47every once in a while but capsulate means.
- 19:50You were happy. You were consistent because you
- 19:53didn't want the competitors really know you so they could
- 19:57use it against you. Right.
- 19:59Right. Yeah.
- 20:00I get it. Yeah I mean because at some
- 20:02point you know you know how this deal Works.
- 20:04Some point somebody's going to I know you do get in here looking
- 20:07to make a story out of this and then this guy is going to get to
- 20:10that guy because if you tell them that, if you tell everybody
- 20:14that you have the greatest tire guy in the world at some point,
- 20:19every guy in the garage is going to hire the greatest tire guy in
- 20:22the world one hired to run over him.
- 20:24Yeah, I mean so if you've got something that's good you want
- 20:27to be quiet about it as long as you can because you don't want
- 20:30to lose it and you want to make sure that you show appreciation
- 20:34as much as you can in ways that that won't let people into why
- 20:39it's actually going good or, you know, how excited you are.
- 20:43So I've always been pretty guarded in that aspect now, I
- 20:46know why Tony Stewart hired you, you know.
- 20:49Tony was our first guest and then we went to Mark Martin, and
- 20:53you're our third and you are the same as Tony.
- 20:56We never started the conversation on my notes until
- 20:59about 30 minutes into the conversation, I love you.
- 21:02So, let's, let's start the conversation of.
- 21:05It's like, is like I said, look, it means a lot, right?
- 21:08So I got these notes. Let me say this about you.
- 21:12And just Don't get cherry red in the face but you've done it all.
- 21:18You've done it all. Okay?
- 21:19And that means that you're a NASCAR champion.
- 21:23You want every Big Race that I know of you are going to be a
- 21:28Hall of Famer. And that just, you know, was
- 21:32clarified basically by yesterday, the day before you
- 21:36were voted top 75 and we saw the video with you know Piper you
- 21:42love her so much. I saw you staring at her But
- 21:45what I like about Keen, as you can rough him up a little bit
- 21:47and he can take it. So, in my opinion, you've done
- 21:52it all. So is there anything else?
- 21:55I mean, I couldn't think of anything else.
- 21:57Is there anything else that is on your checklist in the NASCAR
- 22:01series, though? I mean, obviously, you'd always
- 22:07always want to be greedy and you want to win more but, you know,
- 22:10I think going into this year, it's really rewarding to know
- 22:15that. You know, you've been very,
- 22:18we've been very fortunate. I've been very fortunate to have
- 22:22won the big races and won a championship and won the Xfinity
- 22:26championships. We've been on the ownership side
- 22:28of the Championships in the truck series, man.
- 22:32I mean, there's no reason to get greedy about it, at this point.
- 22:35So why? Why?
- 22:37Why I get greedy? I of course, our goal this year
- 22:40was to be competitive. If we get more wins I'm fine
- 22:42with that. If we win a championship, I had
- 22:44be great with that but I'm not going to be Be, I'm not going to
- 22:48be happier or sad. If we don't do either, I would
- 22:52be, I'd be sad if we weren't competitive, but we've been
- 22:54competitive this year so that part's going to go fine.
- 22:59But really this year was because the way I wanted to do it Kenny
- 23:03was to just go to the banquet, walk off the stage and say see
- 23:07you guys, I'm all just flip them off, would you?
- 23:09No no no no, no. The thing that people got to
- 23:18remember, no matter how happy or sad, you are with Nascar or
- 23:22racing in general, it's still my life.
- 23:25Like, I love me, I love racing, I love NASCAR and the things
- 23:29that I've been able to do in NASCAR racing and the things
- 23:33that it is granted me for the way to live my life and do the
- 23:37things that I do, how, I mean, why should I ever be mad about
- 23:41that, right? Like, I get it.
- 23:43Like, they run their business, you run your business and I'm
- 23:46going to have it. Opinion.
- 23:47But unless it's mine, like I have no right to tell you that,
- 23:51that's the exact way that you should do it.
- 23:53I have an opinion. Yeah, I think we all have an
- 23:56opinion right of works better or what's worse and whether they
- 24:00listen or don't listen, but really the goal this year was to
- 24:03be competitive, but tell that story.
- 24:05How do we have fun with it? And tell the story of 30 years
- 24:08of racing and 27, 23 years in the cup series and fortunate to
- 24:13have a lot of success and and let's let's celebrate it.
- 24:17Like I would have never done that before, because I was
- 24:20worried about, you know, how that would be perceived, but
- 24:24really with the way that it's gone and the way that
- 24:26everybody's, you know, being able to look at everything and
- 24:30all the stuff that that Stewart-Haas Racing and all the,
- 24:34all the NASCAR folks, and everybody has captured and going
- 24:38back and reflecting on all those moments.
- 24:39It's been great and we've we've had a good time with it.
- 24:43I get to drive the 29 car again at the home.
- 24:47Richard. Yeah, Darlington.
- 24:50We all with the throw back there, doing the throwback cars
- 24:52at Darlington. But driving the 29 Cup car at
- 24:56the All-Star Race is going to be pretty neat.
- 24:58So it's just good timing, you know, to call it to call it a,
- 25:05to call the end of it. I get to do it on my terms, I
- 25:07get to be competitive and been fortunate to accomplish a lot of
- 25:11things, so I have nothing to be mad about.
- 25:14I can just floor it and get out and say, Well.
- 25:18Something happens. I'm sorry you come get me next
- 25:21year. We're going to talk about NASCAR
- 25:23at the end. Like I do with all the
- 25:25Champions. We're going to get to the end
- 25:27but you brought that up so believe I know what you're going
- 25:33to say. But I want you to say it is why
- 25:36I'm going to ask it and that is we both you and I and a lot of
- 25:41people but not a lot. You Denny, Hamlin myself.
- 25:45We get mouthy against NASCAR. I believe it is it because we
- 25:49care. Kevin.
- 25:53Well, I think, I think, I think the, you know, the one thing to
- 25:56remember is we all have, we all see it in and we all see things
- 26:00from a different aspect, right? Yeah.
- 26:02What are they thinking? Yeah.
- 26:04And but, yeah, I think when you look at it, gosh, it's so much
- 26:09bigger. That's what we're thinking.
- 26:11What do they think? And we don't know what they know
- 26:13is what I'm saying. Yeah.
- 26:14And I think, I think the biggest thing is it's so much bigger
- 26:16than that than anything that we can even compute.
- 26:20Yeah, the magnitude of the Business in the, in the, in the
- 26:24way that it is running the amount of people that are into
- 26:26it, like, I don't even know where to start and that's,
- 26:29that's really for me when I'm like, you know what, these this
- 26:34car sucks or that restart sucked, or that call was
- 26:37terrible. I've learned to not take offense
- 26:40to it, we're thinking about ourselves as we're.
- 26:42Yeah, we're it autonomy. And you know, I we've spent
- 26:47we've spent the last I guess it's we're getting ready to, I
- 26:52guess it's been a year and a half that.
- 26:53We've really spent a lot of time as drivers.
- 26:56We've spent a lot of time with, with NASCAR and and their group
- 27:00and I'll be honest with you, we've never had more
- 27:03conversations about how to make the sport better and how to make
- 27:08things better, and how to do things differently and what the
- 27:10rules packages should be and how the tires should wear and just
- 27:16You wouldn't believe how open open.
- 27:18They are about everything that's going on in the communication
- 27:22that they're having with the drivers and to see all those
- 27:25drivers sit in the room. I don't know that.
- 27:29I don't know that you ever got to experience anything like
- 27:31that. But we go, we go.
- 27:34I mean weeks, and weeks, and weeks, and weeks of time
- 27:37together. Talking about how to grow the
- 27:40sport and how to do things better and new orta know this,
- 27:45the ours is Ours are just drivers drivers driver dies on
- 27:49death. When did this happen?
- 27:51Yeah we have. We have the drivers advisory
- 27:52Council that's been around. It's been around for a little
- 27:55bit now, but it really, really, with the new car, the safety of
- 27:59the, the new car and the accidents, and things that we
- 28:02had with the concussions kind of brought everything everything to
- 28:06a head. And but, you know, I think, I
- 28:10think, for me, I was pissed after Darlington last year, when
- 28:15my car caught on fire and it Kind of kind of ruined the
- 28:17playoffs and and we did a whole show about it.
- 28:20Yeah, that's yeah, that's really when it kind of came to a head
- 28:25and but we got some stuff done and we got some things started
- 28:29to change and really you know we change the rear clip we worked
- 28:35on the doors we've worked on Arrow packages and and so it's
- 28:41you know it's how do we communicate?
- 28:44How do we communicate in them? And help them.
- 28:47That's, that's really where we've evolved to.
- 28:49Because the communication is, is there an and, you know, I think
- 28:53from the driver's standpoint we're as big a part of this
- 28:55process as ever. We can't just we can't just turn
- 28:58our back anymore and say I do it this way and then just walk off.
- 29:01Like if you're going to have an opinion now you're going to have
- 29:04to sit in a room with all of us and tell us, tell us your
- 29:07opinion and show up to the meetings and be a part of this
- 29:10process to make it better. Because really, that's what
- 29:12happened, you know, when you guys were all there and Dale
- 29:15would Wrangle everybody up and say, all right, if it's not
- 29:18right, we're going to fix it. And, you know, I think it's been
- 29:21a very proactive process to be able to have the drivers
- 29:25involved. I can't speak for the team.
- 29:27I feel like, let me ask you this in that in that context.
- 29:30Do you feel like when your car caught on fire last year?
- 29:34Darling? Didn't ruin your race?
- 29:36Do you feel like you were so upset that they finally listen
- 29:40to you? Because I know there was
- 29:41Engineers involved to tell. NASCAR, here's what we need to
- 29:45do. We need to spray this On here,
- 29:47it won't do it. Did they listen to you?
- 29:49I think part of that, I think, I think if we'd have been as
- 29:53involved, now, then as we are now, I don't know that we've
- 29:58ever evolved to that because, you know, they were at a point
- 30:02where they waited too long to fix the cars.
- 30:05And I fires a lot of fires, a lot of problems and we should
- 30:08have never, we should have never got that far, but they realize
- 30:12that now, and they've been much more proactive with with a lot
- 30:15of things that they've done. Done.
- 30:16So it's been, it's been an interesting process and some of
- 30:19that I fault myself for some of that not wrangling everybody up
- 30:25and really putting these putting putting us all together as a as
- 30:30a group of drivers and and having to, you know, a better
- 30:34process of trying to communicate because I tell you the
- 30:40communication right now is we have more communication with
- 30:43NASCAR than we have ever had in the history.
- 30:46Of my being here period by a lot, not even comparable.
- 30:51So once again, I want to brag on you and you said maybe your dad
- 30:58but I feel like you have a very high IQ.
- 31:02And here's why by the way, happy I learned that in TV.
- 31:07My boss is said if you're going to say something tell them why.
- 31:10So I feel like you have a very high Q because at a very young
- 31:13age, Even if you shut it down, you were brave enough to start a
- 31:18truck seat truck team. You started khi management.
- 31:23You're managing some of the greatest athletes in America and
- 31:28then then you're talking right now about Gathering.
- 31:31You should have never been in that position.
- 31:34Does that come from your dad or your mom?
- 31:37This high IQ of young and knowing what you want?
- 31:40You go at it. I think it's, you know, I think
- 31:43this is something that That probably is lacking in today's
- 31:46world. I think my IQ is not very high
- 31:49really block it. I think a lot of it is common
- 31:52sense kidney and just just paying attention to what is
- 31:55rounded around you because I really, really good stuff.
- 31:58You control your sponsors? Yeah.
- 32:01Well I am in a lot of that is just relationships, right?
- 32:04Like picking up having having your sponsors birthday in your
- 32:09calendar and sending him a text and tell him.
- 32:11Happy birthday. I guess pretty difficult.
- 32:13You control your sponsors out. Drivers can say that well, and a
- 32:16lot of that just happens because, you know, in those in
- 32:19the sponsor situations that really comes from just
- 32:22relationships, right. Thank you because it's not all
- 32:24going to be here. We're not always going to be on
- 32:27the up and up and the performance side of things.
- 32:29At some point you're those relationships and and the things
- 32:32that you do are going to are going to pay off because of the
- 32:35fact that when things are going bad and the sponsor contract is
- 32:40up there going to be like you know what though that guy has
- 32:42been an ambassador for us. He's Done things that he doesn't
- 32:45have to do for us and he's been good for our business.
- 32:48And that's that's really what you want.
- 32:50And I always tell our young kids, nobody cares about you
- 32:55more than you period. So, if you want to be
- 32:58successful, pay attention to what the hell is going on?
- 33:02Pay attention. Because if you don't pay
- 33:04attention, and take your own career into your own hands,
- 33:08shake some hands, go above and beyond to do people.
- 33:11If you just do what you're supposed to do by your contract,
- 33:15You won't be here long. You won't be here. 23 years.
- 33:17I promise you that your talent speaks for itself.
- 33:21I mean, you know, there it is, right?
- 33:22You win all the time, you win championships but I'll be
- 33:26honest, you know, I'm most fascinated.
- 33:29And, you know, I've had some one minute conversations with you.
- 33:34You know, I'll never forget at the Atlanta race track.
- 33:39Atlanta was always an Achilles heel for me.
- 33:41I could not, I grew up short track race and chop into
- 33:45Corners, letting off the gas getting on it.
- 33:48And I finally looked at you at Atlanta, I think Kevin and I was
- 33:52depleted, I was in my 50s and I said, teach me how to drive this
- 33:55track. It is early in the driver's
- 33:57meeting. And you put your both your feet
- 34:00on top of my feet and you taught me your Technique.
- 34:07I'm not going to share it here because I don't guess you guys
- 34:09don't use it there now so we might as well share it.
- 34:11Yeah. But you want to share that with
- 34:15everybody. How did you learn?
- 34:18You were when you were winning everything there and I mean,
- 34:20you're still were going to win but you were letting off the gas
- 34:2490%. You have BRAC, dragging the
- 34:26brake never fully. Getting out of the gas did you
- 34:30learn that technique on this wrong?
- 34:32Talk about high IQ? Yeah you learn that technique
- 34:34right away but you grew up in Bakersfield where did you learn
- 34:38that that gas brake system? Yeah, well you know, I think, I
- 34:42think the first thing out of that out of that question, is
- 34:45you learned that? I, I like helping people.
- 34:49I love to help people but I just don't like helping people who
- 34:51don't want to listen. And if you're going to, if
- 34:53you're going to, if you're not going to listen or you're going
- 34:55to be a jerk, I'm not going to help you.
- 34:56You help me. Yeah.
- 34:58Like open you because you're not a jerk.
- 35:02But and there's a lot of people that just won't listen, no be
- 35:05like, ah, there's no way that'll work.
- 35:07You just went out there and did it and it worked fine.
- 35:09But I think for me, I grew up in Bakersfield at Mesa Marin and we
- 35:15always had that big lip on the bottom of the racetrack, right.
- 35:18And you had to hit that lip no you didn't have to you could you
- 35:22could run around the normal but Master you could take a piece of
- 35:24crap car and compete with it. If you could hit that lip and it
- 35:28was is all about setting the car on the lip, write it in with the
- 35:31brake set, the front down, get the thing on the lip and then
- 35:35touch the throttle. So that the car would set and
- 35:37you could drag it around the corner, I'll be darn.
- 35:41I think a lot of that started there because straighter used to
- 35:43tell me, I used to tell him what, you just drive it.
- 35:46Like you do it, may seem and he used to tell me.
- 35:47I was an idiot but it's funny because he's a great dirt racer.
- 35:53Yeah, he's the one, shredders the one to tell me.
- 35:55There's a thousand different spots in that gas pedal.
- 35:58Yeah, there's a thousand different spots and and you know
- 36:01I think as we tested and tested and tested God Kenny that was
- 36:05one of the things that that really has helped me.
- 36:09You know through my career was our motto and still I tell my
- 36:14guys is a lot today evolve or die.
- 36:17Like if you want to stay around here you better not.
- 36:19You better not think that there's not something better
- 36:21waiting around the corner because there is and there's a
- 36:24better technique. There's a better way.
- 36:26There's a better setup. There's a there's a difference.
- 36:28Right way to do it and when you really start looking around and
- 36:31you see all the different people that are doing this, and then
- 36:34you start talking to him and you can say, hey, did you hear what?
- 36:37That guy said? That's a dumb idea.
- 36:39Or you can walk away and say, you think we should try that?
- 36:42Maybe maybe there's something to that.
- 36:44We should at least try what he's talking about.
- 36:47That's probably the proper way to do this so that you don't
- 36:51wind up on the dead side of things, in the evolution of our
- 36:54sport. Because as you know, this this
- 36:56garage and this sport Evolve so rapidly.
- 37:00And if you're out of the loop for that long you're in big
- 37:03trouble. Yeah.
- 37:05I think this is where you need a couple nicknames.
- 37:07It's happy Harvick sneaky Harvick high IQ or Harvick, what
- 37:11if we don't get going we're going to go.
- 37:13Okay I have a two-hour interview and my manager Charlie Marlowe
- 37:16would say that's great, but let's move on to now you've done
- 37:21so much that it is you know, we need a five hour conversation
- 37:25and I know I don't Not exaggerating you have done it
- 37:30all and you said, you really don't have anything else on your
- 37:34list. So let's wrap that up and let's
- 37:36move forward. I remember Dale Earnhardt, jr.
- 37:41Making fun of me now, loving, but you're 2000 something to
- 37:47were at Charlotte. I get lucky qualify, like fourth
- 37:51or fifth in the squirty's car and it was his first race in the
- 37:55he made the race in the all the media was Dale.
- 37:59Earnhardt jr. He made a smartass comment to
- 38:01me, he said, oh, you're doing TV.
- 38:03Now that means your careers over it really pissed me off.
- 38:08No, it did piss me off it, hurt my feelings.
- 38:10So, my question you before we get into TV.
- 38:14When did that change? We're now everybody's doing TV.
- 38:20Okay. When did that change that?
- 38:22If you did TV, that meant you were, you, you were cool.
- 38:26They ask you to do TV. When did that change?
- 38:29Well, that really changed when gosh, we started I guess when
- 38:34was the we went into the booth when was it?
- 38:38Okay, let's put it that way. Yeah, they had you in there 10
- 38:42years ago. It seemed like during the
- 38:44Xfinity races. Yeah, we started going up there
- 38:46during the Xfinity races but not only cool.
- 38:49I don't know if I made it cool but I think you made it
- 38:51acceptable? I think.
- 38:53Yeah I think your team had to make it acceptable to and you
- 38:57had to be willing to take the time but As that all evolved
- 39:01being in the booth, the team's, in the sponsor started asking
- 39:06questions. Well, why aren't you in the
- 39:07booth? And why aren't you spending more
- 39:09time up there? So you were the most and when
- 39:12you start doing stuff like that, you put pressure on the other
- 39:14guys to do more work because of the fact that you're doing it
- 39:18and then their teams and their sponsors are asking questions.
- 39:20And so, you know, really being in the booth that that long and,
- 39:26you know, developing those relationships with Fox and
- 39:28spending the time. I'm up there, you know, it
- 39:31really paid off I guess, 10, or 12 years later because of the
- 39:34fact that we're going to be in the, I'm going to be in the TV
- 39:36booth going forward next year and you've got you got all those
- 39:40reps, right? You got all those reps in the TV
- 39:43Booth with the producers and, you know, all the different
- 39:47talent that goes in and out of the booth and it's such a
- 39:49different perspective up there but it was kind of wild like
- 39:53like you were ready for the 3 car.
- 39:56You're now ready for TV, right? Because you already regard,
- 40:01we've already been through all the work.
- 40:03And I always try to look at things as what's next, right.
- 40:07And I think EV was always something that I thought would
- 40:10be fun. And and you know, we took the
- 40:13opportunity to go in the booth and be able to start going
- 40:17through the Reps and developing the relationships and
- 40:19understanding how it all worked and listening to yourself and
- 40:23whether you liked it, didn't like it.
- 40:26Sounded good. Didn't sound good, dye your
- 40:29hair? Are don't dye your hair shave,
- 40:30your beard. Don't shave.
- 40:31I wonder if everything is right. I exactly went through it.
- 40:34I told Jacob, almond. I said, Jake it, I'm gray hair.
- 40:38Here's the Regan Smith. We had a great talk.
- 40:41I said I'm going to quit. I'm gonna go ride my dirt car
- 40:43but you're so real. I did, I did think about my gray
- 40:47hair and I did dye it because I thought it made me look younger.
- 40:50But you let me ask you this ten years ago when you started doing
- 40:55TV for the extent of your race on Saturdays in the Back of your
- 40:59mind, did you think that fox would hire you to have the
- 41:04biggest job in NASCAR TV is and that's be in the booth and call
- 41:08the races in 2024. Don't think that would happen.
- 41:12That was the intention so that you had lobbied am so that you
- 41:16had so that you had the opportunity, whether it was with
- 41:20fox or whoever was doing it so that you had the opportunity to
- 41:22say, I'm going to quit this year and I've got I mean you're as
- 41:29relevant as you can be and I've got all these reps in the booth
- 41:33for all these years of doing TV. I mean you build your resume
- 41:38while you were still racing and that was always the intention of
- 41:42you know to try to make sure that you had something to do
- 41:45when you were done and you were and you were you are already
- 41:50groomed to do it because of the fact that you'd already done it
- 41:53a lot. Lots o.
- 41:55But that was always the intention because look, there
- 41:58was a time I guess it would have been probably 2,000, I guess.
- 42:04What are we 23? I thought about retiring last
- 42:06year and then we signed the we signed the two-year contract.
- 42:10So I guess it would have been 2018.
- 42:13Like it was a real possibility to just say I think that might
- 42:16have been it and I don't know why that should have been easy
- 42:19to do it during the virus. Yeah, it would have been but
- 42:232018 was before all that, you know, that I thought I thought I
- 42:27seriously thought about 2018 being The last year but the
- 42:32timing never felt. Right?
- 42:34I had a great relationship. If it wasn't for my relationship
- 42:37with with Rodney and the team and everybody, he loves you so
- 42:41much. Probably would have probably
- 42:43would have quit, but I just everybody gives so much that I
- 42:46felt like, I would have been letting them down.
- 42:49He ever seen a crew chief Rodney.
- 42:51Childers brag on his driver on social media.
- 42:55I think he truly loves you and cares about you.
- 42:58Oh there's a, there's a, there's Is a love and care that I'm just
- 43:02like we're like we're brothers, right?
- 43:04Yeah. And when I do something dumb or
- 43:06say something dumb or do something that I shouldn't do,
- 43:08he be like man you can you can do better than that.
- 43:11I don't embarrass the hell out of you, but you listen.
- 43:15Yeah. But you listen right.
- 43:17There's and there's you know, there's a lot of people that you
- 43:19listen to but there's a there's not very many people that you
- 43:22put that much trust into and listen to to the 11 that I will
- 43:26listen to Rodney, right? And when you find You find like
- 43:31I worked my whole career to find a crew chief like that when I
- 43:34was like, yeah maybe I should just quit 2018.
- 43:37I'll be like, I don't know, spent twenty twenty some years
- 43:41looking for you know a relationship like that to be
- 43:45able to have the trust and smarts and passion and
- 43:48everything is you have I mean we're almost exact same age.
- 43:51We have two kids and grew up the same way race, the same things
- 43:55and he's calm. I'm hyper.
- 43:58You know, there's just there's Rap.
- 44:00There's just so many things that are good about it and have been
- 44:03good about it. And have, you know, he believes
- 44:06in that evolution of the sport and how things evolve and, and
- 44:10how, to make things better and believes in the people.
- 44:12And he, I've just never you, never, it's hard to find a
- 44:16situation where you come in and like, and that was a horrible
- 44:19day and he'd be like, man, our car sucked.
- 44:21I'm like never one time when he ever say and he drove like shit
- 44:26today. Yeah, he would never say that.
- 44:28Nobody's perfect but he would. Tell me hey you need you might
- 44:32want to look at this. You know what, you might want to
- 44:34do this or you might want to create.
- 44:36Yeah. And and so he's just, I don't
- 44:39know. From the from the very beginning
- 44:41he was honest with me and he said, Kevin I don't want to be
- 44:43yelled at all day. He's like, I'm not going to put
- 44:45up with the fighting and all the all the BS that go along with
- 44:48the law down early and and he was just totally upfront with me
- 44:52and I was and it really made me think about, okay, who are you?
- 44:56What are you doing? And we got done and Rodney
- 45:00signed up and I told the land, I said, we're selling our house.
- 45:04We're moving to a different town.
- 45:06We're selling our cars. We are starting from scratch.
- 45:10We Are Persian, I got rid of everything.
- 45:12I had we moved to Charlotte and when I work, when I went to work
- 45:16for shr, we started with it. Absolutely empty clean sheet of
- 45:20paper. And I said, and he said, I
- 45:22don't, he's he told me. He said, I don't want you to
- 45:25think about anything that you've raced.
- 45:27I don't want you to worry about Springs.
- 45:29I don't want you to worry. Out, shocks, we're going to come
- 45:31in here, we're going to build this together and we're going to
- 45:33develop it works for us. And he's like, I don't want to
- 45:35hear about anything that you've done.
- 45:37I'm not gonna hold on, perfect. Okay, you got me in the left,
- 45:44rear quarter panel right now. Let's go, let's go back a little
- 45:47bit, so, And straighten this out.
- 45:53Are you telling me that you and Elena you know?
- 45:57Right sized. Remember we talked about that,
- 45:59you got you started you having all this stuff and you right
- 46:03sized, you've got rid of everything, are you saying that
- 46:07Rodney Childers was a part of that equation or absolute timing
- 46:12one at 100%? It was all he was, he was a big
- 46:15part of that and he was it wasn't.
- 46:18I mean it was it really made us stop and look back at that.
- 46:22Things and say, yeah, if we're going to be all in, we're going
- 46:26to be all-in. So we sold the team's try.
- 46:29You sold our house. This is saying bars, we purged,
- 46:34we bought a new house. I mean, we did we changed
- 46:37everything. Kenny, you know, it was it was
- 46:39to start from the beginning to to win and put yourself in a
- 46:44position to be a part of the team and the effort that was
- 46:47going to go into your car, to make sure that you are focused
- 46:50on Cup. And the Things that you needed
- 46:53to do to be successful in Cup. This is absolutely fantastic.
- 46:57I love the Kenny conversation because I always was in, don't
- 47:01take this wrong because, you know, I care about you.
- 47:03I thought the reason you were purging was to have children.
- 47:08That was, I mean, it was, it was all in the same time, but you
- 47:11remember, we already had kids. When I went to, we already had
- 47:14kids. When I went to humans on board
- 47:18when I went to Stewart-Haas Racing, okay, but the process
- 47:22has started two years before that.
- 47:24Like, I signed that, I signed that contract to go to
- 47:27Stewart-Haas a year and a half before my contract, ended, it
- 47:31Stewart-Haas. And we had started selling the
- 47:33teams to the plan. The plan was to purge everything
- 47:37in stock Start over. It's fantastic.
- 47:39This is good stuff that your key.
- 47:41What you're saying is Total Focus you won't you and Elena
- 47:44went Total Focus. Yep that was the that was the
- 47:48plan. We wanted to start a family
- 47:50focus on the cup car and not see anything that we had done in the
- 47:54past. It was all new beginning and
- 47:57that was and we stepped way out on the limb to go and do that
- 48:01with everything. But we, you know, we talked
- 48:03about it for years and executed the plan for years in order to
- 48:07To put herself in a position that it was the focused on the
- 48:12prize family of, you know, having kids and and focus
- 48:17everything around around the cup program and making sure that you
- 48:22won the races and did the things that you want to do.
- 48:24Otherwise, you'd look back on it and wouldn't be sitting in the
- 48:26last year saying, well, I'm okay if we don't accomplish anything
- 48:30else but that's not the way I want to end it.
- 48:33But I'd be okay. This is the point that you
- 48:37Wanted to sit at being happy with the fact that you put
- 48:41everything in. You are all in, push it all in.
- 48:44I'm going to tell you this story, don't want you to comment
- 48:46on it. I'll watch the interview.
- 48:48They were interviewing the world's wealthiest man at the
- 48:51time, maybe 10, 15 years ago, Warren Buffett.
- 48:54And they said, warn you, you talked to Alex Rodriguez, you
- 48:58know, the great player with the New York Yankees.
- 49:01What type of advice do you give a rod?
- 49:06And he said, play baseball. Don't be out here trying to
- 49:10start these companies, do what you do best.
- 49:14It sounds to me, is that what you did 100% getting?
- 49:18We started this Housing Development development, one
- 49:20time, I love it, - promise, we started this Housing Development
- 49:25one time, we bought this house in development.
- 49:27I'm like, you know what? These people making all kinds of
- 49:30money and I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that.
- 49:32Everything crashed. Hmm, 2008 and Circumstance.
- 49:36I bought it. I bought it.
- 49:37I think I bought it. In 2007, by the time it was all
- 49:40said, and I was the only one left with any money, I owned the
- 49:44Housing Development. And from that day forward, we
- 49:49sold the house in development, eventually and worked ourselves
- 49:52out of it, and it worked out fine.
- 49:54But from that day forward, I told him, I said, you know what
- 49:57businesses, we need to be in going forward unless it has four
- 50:01wheels and tires on it. Mmm.
- 50:03Not doing it because we don't know anything about anything
- 50:07else. We Going to we are going to work
- 50:09to race because that work H I came from to a little bit.
- 50:13No, you know, I think cage I was really more about the management
- 50:18company. Well KH I started because it was
- 50:21really I just wanted to win a truck race because we had never
- 50:24been able to, with the family team and and everything that we
- 50:28had its peers. We were never able to win a
- 50:30truck race and I didn't want to go through the my career and
- 50:32say, you know, I race trucks but I never won and really the case.
- 50:38Ehi team itself started because General Motors came to us and
- 50:41said they didn't want to get beat by Toyota.
- 50:44So they gave us a sponsor. They gave us the engines and
- 50:47helped us helped us start the team to go truck racing and
- 50:50that's that's really where it's great took off to the point of
- 50:54being more than a hobby. That's really when it turned
- 50:55into a business and then in 2005 you know we had the truck teams
- 51:01already running and Tony came to us.
- 51:03He didn't want to drive for Joe Gibbs and he said, will you
- 51:06build me some Busch cars? So I built That's how we started
- 51:09the bush team. This Tony Tony didn't want to
- 51:12drive for Joe Gibbs, so he brought mr.
- 51:14Clean and all the Old Spice sponsorship to our team because
- 51:18I don't know what was happening. But so we built Tony's Busch
- 51:23cars and then that started the Busch Series teams because Tony
- 51:26Tony wanted to erase those cars. And then when we shut it all
- 51:30down, I kept, let's see, one two, Three.
- 51:35I kept the three, three or four main people from I guess, three
- 51:39from khi. And in all honesty, it's like
- 51:43everything else. Can he?
- 51:44You know, you're just sitting having a conversation in the
- 51:47right spot, right? Time feels good and it all works
- 51:50out well. I was sitting in the infield in
- 51:522012 and tap the tap out clothing brand.
- 51:56Hmm, brought a Bus full of Fighters to the Texas Motor
- 51:59Speedway. Here's the story.
- 52:01Now, this is where I want to hear.
- 52:04We had just sold all the race teams in the buildings and
- 52:07everything we'd sold into three or four different people.
- 52:09So we were out of racing and but I had I kept, I kept all, I kept
- 52:13my three main people because I knew I wanted to do something
- 52:17different. Just didn't didn't know what I
- 52:19wanted. My stuff to continue
- 52:20functioning, well, mother function, mother function.
- 52:24Yeah. So in 2012, tap out brought that
- 52:27bus of people and I'm sitting in a chair with Donald Cerrone,
- 52:30Cowboy? Hmm.
- 52:31Yeah, you can of Budweiser, And just watching the race hanging
- 52:35out in the infield, met him for the first time.
- 52:38He invited me to a fight. Josh, and I mother function
- 52:41drove to a drove to a fight in Virginia Military.
- 52:44Only we sat in the stands, watched him fight started.
- 52:48Just going to a few of Donald's fights and he called one day and
- 52:52he said, hey I got a question. He's like, I like the way you
- 52:54guys do business and function as a group, and the way that they
- 52:59do, your schedule in the way, way that you guys go about
- 53:01things, you guys, You guys be interested in managing me?
- 53:06Well, I'll be darned and that's how cage I management started.
- 53:09That is fantastic. Yep.
- 53:11Was from, from Donald Cerrone conversation and just hanging
- 53:14out with us, in going to a few fights.
- 53:18And so we started with Donald and we basically just inserted
- 53:22him into the day-to-day process of how I was and just learn the
- 53:27UFC system. And, and he went to his first
- 53:31fight, he had sponsors from head to toe.
- 53:33Well, I'm sure you brought NASCAR into fighting.
- 53:37Well, at that particular time. They didn't have any rules on
- 53:42their shorts. They just had to approve the
- 53:44sponsors. So I'm like, well, what better
- 53:46way to give our sponsors of some fringe benefits here.
- 53:50We'll just put all of our sponsors on his shorts because
- 53:53it's cheap and he wins all the time.
- 53:55We can take them to the fight, they can get the exposure on TV.
- 53:59And that's really how the concept of sharing with the It's
- 54:03in the sponsors and being a little more diverse in where the
- 54:10sponsorship goes and and and being able to, You Know, cover
- 54:14more territory than just NASCAR. Because everybody doesn't like,
- 54:17NASCAR, everybody doesn't like the UFC.
- 54:20Well anyway, you're when you're there, you are again with your
- 54:22high IQ, Common Sense. Kenny, I just connect the dots.
- 54:26I'm like, I'm like the kid in the coloring book.
- 54:28I just like to connect the dots right?
- 54:30We can make it. Do you have any car network of
- 54:32people? Bigger, and Yes, Ops to connect
- 54:35and we have more done skillfully.
- 54:36Good people were things. But so anyway, Donald had a
- 54:40bunch of sponsors on his shorts, he fought twice and then Miesha
- 54:43Tate called. She's amazing.
- 54:45Hey, what a great name? Yeah.
- 54:47And so she called and she said, hey, I noticed that Donald has a
- 54:51lot of sponsors on his shorts which they let me out for ice
- 54:53cream now. Yeah, interesting.
- 54:57We still represent Donald retired.
- 54:59Misha still rising. And then we started working with
- 55:02Jay Cohen on On the sponsorship side and some of his events and
- 55:07now it's evolved into into what it is and it's a lot easier from
- 55:11the management side. Now because of the fact that we
- 55:14can represent more drivers now that I'm stepping out of the
- 55:17car, it's not so complicated to have more drivers because now I
- 55:21can help them with their day-to-day stuff.
- 55:23With their team, I can help their teams with them.
- 55:25We can help them with sponsorship and we can share the
- 55:29we can share the wisdom. Kenny so you know, I have a
- 55:32little clock in my I left hand corner, just on the computer,
- 55:35we've been going for almost an hour 58 minutes and Like I said,
- 55:41we can't do it all. We're going to have to have a
- 55:44three-part episode know and I will and I really appreciate
- 55:47that. There's so much more to ask you
- 55:50about TV. Okay, I just got to go back
- 55:54through this. Just I want it.
- 55:56We got to start ending so TV. I'm going to make the comment
- 56:00and then you tell me what you think, You made TV cool for the
- 56:06new era people because your sponsors saw you on TV and
- 56:11they're like, that's Kevin Harvick, he represents us and
- 56:16then the other drivers got jealous because their sponsors
- 56:20are like, why aren't you on TV like Harvard?
- 56:22Because Joey Logano, he's the shell guy but he wasn't on TV.
- 56:27Is that what you think happened? I don't know that anybody got
- 56:30jealous. I think there's a few of them
- 56:31that pay attention. Like right, Joe, he's a smart
- 56:34guy, and you guys want, and I'm a smartass.
- 56:37Yeah. Well, you know, I think, I think
- 56:39as you go through, as you go through the next 10 years,
- 56:42you'll, I think a lot of people will understand, you know, how
- 56:46ingrained and and, and how much Joey cares about the sport, and
- 56:50the things that he does, but he pays attention, he can drive the
- 56:52car fast, but he pays attention right, he's smart.
- 56:55I was using him for an example. That's right shells.
- 56:58Like hey, you need to be on TV. Yeah.
- 56:59So, you know, there's there's a few of those guys that are That
- 57:03are paying attention and see in the exposure.
- 57:05I wouldn't I would never call it jealousy because of the fact
- 57:08that, you know, I think that there's just going to be some
- 57:12that understand how it works and there's going to be some that
- 57:15don't understand how it work. And I think, you know, a lot of
- 57:18those guys are just, you know, the Logano and Blaney and and
- 57:24there's a few of them Keselowski that do it every week because
- 57:27they see the value of being on TV and people hear in your voice
- 57:31and seeing your name. But also it keeps you in tune
- 57:34with the sport and being able to see what everybody else sees see
- 57:38what everybody else sees and understand what they're talking
- 57:41about. And not just, you know, not just
- 57:43complaining about well TV does this and I, why do they do that
- 57:46and why they use? Well, if you spend enough time
- 57:48with them, you can get the answers to those questions.
- 57:50They may not agree with you, but you can at least have a better
- 57:52understanding of where it's where it's headed and what's
- 57:56doing. So there's there's no there's
- 58:01and you hear the You hear this all the time.
- 58:04You probably know this as well, but social media is great.
- 58:08But it doesn't come close to the exposure that you get on TV.
- 58:11So yeah, that's why we're all here is to be on to be on
- 58:15television. You want your car on TV?
- 58:16The most you want your name, set on TV, the most, you want the
- 58:19most most exposure, the most exposure brings the most value.
- 58:23And, you know, more value means you can buy more tires, right?
- 58:28Or more power, pretty, and it's go-kart Alright, so here's the
- 58:35tough part, this is where Charlie's going to edit it up
- 58:38and this would be that 10 or 15 minutes section that we do with
- 58:42every every person that comes on any conversation and I don't
- 58:46want to get you in trouble. Like I told Tony and he didn't
- 58:50and same with Mark Martin. So here we go.
- 58:54Your opinion on NASCAR and I'm going to give you the, you know,
- 58:59the order. So your opinion on the a NASCAR
- 59:03is going about these penalties and these finds.
- 59:08Well, I think that the intention the intention was to stop all
- 59:11the garbage right was was to stop, you know, I think unless
- 59:15they know it's real. Then there, then they're not.
- 59:19Then the teams are just going to keep going.
- 59:22So you got to remember one thing.
- 59:25The teams have been as much a part of Designing these rules
- 59:29and penalties. And the way that this goes as
- 59:32much as Nascar has been. So I see it from a different
- 59:36perspective because the teams and NASCAR are the ones that
- 59:40have come up with a lot of this stuff, you know, as far as the
- 59:45penalties, but in the end You know, I think it in order for
- 59:49this car to work, like I think that you have to be, if you're
- 59:55going to, you have, if you're going to treat the body and the
- 59:58engine and the tires as a, no, no go policy.
- 1:00:01You have to be strict. And, you know, let's face it.
- 1:00:05If you're in the, if you're the, if you're the, if you're the, if
- 1:00:09you're the guy owned in the team, it's a, it's a, it's a big
- 1:00:11money game. And, you know, I think you're
- 1:00:15saying that The car owners, they have to near the teams.
- 1:00:21They have to deter the teams from, they asked for this car
- 1:00:24and asked if he would are. And they asked for this car.
- 1:00:27And they ask for, they ask for tougher rules so you can't have
- 1:00:30it both ways, right? I got you.
- 1:00:32Okay. So, well, let's just talk about
- 1:00:34what you just said, the next-gen car.
- 1:00:37That's the name of it. I'm going to phrase this in a
- 1:00:41little different way than I did Tony and Mark before you Do you
- 1:00:46like this car? If you were to design the car
- 1:00:49was this, the type of car you would design.
- 1:00:52I would not have designed it this way.
- 1:00:54Well, would you design? What would you went out?
- 1:00:56You know, I think that's a, that's a loaded gun, right?
- 1:00:59Because don't get yourself in trouble.
- 1:01:01There's a, that's a loaded gun, you know?
- 1:01:04But you know, I think look, this, this car is a lot like the
- 1:01:09car of tomorrow. When we started the car
- 1:01:11tomorrow, it was the biggest piece of crap.
- 1:01:15If that you could ever put on the racetrack, right?
- 1:01:17And I'll be doing on a backhoe, that's all we did for five
- 1:01:27years, was change that car and that's the bottom line.
- 1:01:30Like the car did not, the car has not performed how everybody
- 1:01:34wants it to perform. You know a lot of the
- 1:01:37aerodynamics are made on the bottom.
- 1:01:39It didn't crash well. We've made that better but we
- 1:01:42got to make a race better. Everybody knows that.
- 1:01:45We got to make it race better and I think a lot of that is
- 1:01:47going to come through the aerodynamics of the car.
- 1:01:49There are a lot of neat things about the car.
- 1:01:52You know, I think the way that it shifts and, you know, the
- 1:01:56wheels and tires and the thought process of how it's supposed to
- 1:01:59be. But right now, that none of that
- 1:02:02matters until we get the racing exactly, right.
- 1:02:05And that is all going to come through, making the tires fall
- 1:02:08off more, get the aerodynamics right?
- 1:02:10And it's, you know, there's going to be some things that
- 1:02:12have to be overhauled, how I would.
- 1:02:15Design it, you know, I think I think the design of the car I
- 1:02:19think was done a lot with those sports car mentality.
- 1:02:22And, you know, I think that the teams have fixed a lot of the,
- 1:02:28when we had the, when we had the car tomorrow, the team's fixed
- 1:02:31all the problems, right? Mmm.
- 1:02:33They just went to their Fab shop and said, oh, we got to cut the
- 1:02:36clip off. Oh, we got to cut the roof off
- 1:02:38and we put a new one on and it was done in a week.
- 1:02:41Now, that is not possible when you Want to change something,
- 1:02:46you have to go to the manufacturer, you have to go to
- 1:02:48the team's, you have to go to NASCAR, you have to change
- 1:02:50rules. I mean it is a long long
- 1:02:53process. And, you know, I think that's
- 1:02:56the that's the part that that everybody's trying to go through
- 1:02:58right now is the process to change.
- 1:03:01It is slow and I went when it was before the teams would bail
- 1:03:05you out because they could fix things so fast in my mind.
- 1:03:09I'm thinking to myself and you just comment on my thought
- 1:03:14Because I'm trying to keep you out of trouble.
- 1:03:17I'm thinking, why did they design his car?
- 1:03:18Oh, I know why, because I know the car owners went to NASCAR
- 1:03:23and I believe maybe this is my theory, I don't know this Roger
- 1:03:28Penske, won them over. Maybe Jim, you know that chip
- 1:03:31ganassi isn't in the sport anymore but he's IndyCar type
- 1:03:34owners. You know, hey, let me buy this
- 1:03:37car from Europe, comes in a crate, I bolted together.
- 1:03:42Am I way off on my thinking? It is okay if I am.
- 1:03:44Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:03:46I don't know the specifics. I've tried to stay very driver
- 1:03:49specific and work on the things that we can work on, because
- 1:03:52that's why you're happy that. Well, no, I I just the owner
- 1:03:57side of things and the NASCAR, the owner NASCAR relationship.
- 1:04:00I just don't know a lot about because I don't know the inner
- 1:04:03workings of it to the T and that's why we've tried to stay
- 1:04:08so driver-focused. But the thing that I will tell
- 1:04:10you is, I think in concept from the Inning to get the cost under
- 1:04:15control and do the things that we needed to do as a sport in
- 1:04:18order to do that, the theory of the cars, correct.
- 1:04:22I think it's just going to take a little bit longer to get the
- 1:04:25racing where we want it to be and it's just going to be a
- 1:04:29little more expensive for a few more years than what they
- 1:04:31thought. And I think I think the runway
- 1:04:34to the car and the concept of cost and the things that go with
- 1:04:39it is just going to take a little bit it's going to take a
- 1:04:41couple years longer. Because of the fact that they're
- 1:04:44just going to have to, they're going to have to change some
- 1:04:46things in order to make it right.
- 1:04:48Kevin, do you think it would benefit NASCAR in the future to
- 1:04:53maybe one day? Think that we're going to have
- 1:04:56this error coming up and it would be two years where there
- 1:05:00will be no, NASCAR major changes, you know little
- 1:05:03thousand dollar deal here or there but it just seems like we
- 1:05:08just did that for two years. We had a parts freeze.
- 1:05:12We had a parts freeze not two years ago.
- 1:05:16So, during the last year covid, we had a parts freeze, you
- 1:05:19couldn't submit any new parts. And the year before, you could
- 1:05:23only, you only had there was a certain parts free.
- 1:05:27So before we went to this car, we had two years where
- 1:05:30development was frozen on the engines, the cars and developing
- 1:05:34parts, and the last year you couldn't develop anything, you
- 1:05:37had what you had. So we've been there and They
- 1:05:42know how to do this. And, you know, I think when we
- 1:05:44went through covid Cove, it taught us a lot about how we
- 1:05:47could function as a sport. And I think covid also bought us
- 1:05:51saved Our Lives, saved our lives in delaying, the next-gen car.
- 1:05:56One year to be able to develop it to the point where they
- 1:06:00released it. But but covid taught us a lot
- 1:06:04about the processes of how we could function as a sport and
- 1:06:07through all those parts freezes leading into what led to The
- 1:06:12next gen car to help the owners absorb.
- 1:06:15You know, some of the some of the savings of the last two
- 1:06:19years of that car of last Jims Car before we got to next-gen.
- 1:06:25So there was some good things that came out of covid.
- 1:06:28I'm going to say this, tell me if I'm full of crap or not
- 1:06:31Wilkesboro and our dear friend Marcus Smith who is a dear
- 1:06:35friend of mine. I'm doing the NASCAR raceday,
- 1:06:37shows gets a seven million dollar Grant, you know?
- 1:06:42Covid money and maybe that saves the North Wilkesboro Speedway in
- 1:06:47my far-fetched. No, I I think there's a number
- 1:06:50of good things that came out of covid for our Sport and and I
- 1:06:54think the efficiencies and just kind of how fast the sport was
- 1:06:57and and pushing ourselves to just get to the racetrack,
- 1:07:01right? And we didn't have too much
- 1:07:04money. We were spending way too much
- 1:07:06money and we're still spending too much money but you know, I
- 1:07:10think covid really opened Everybody's eyes to where we
- 1:07:13could raise when we could raise how we raised and the things
- 1:07:17that we did in order to get to the racetrack.
- 1:07:20So there are a lot of, there's a lot of things that came out of
- 1:07:23covid that changed our sport forever.
- 1:07:26I mean, we went to Kansas last week.
- 1:07:27I left Saturday morning and got home Sunday night at 9:30.
- 1:07:31Fantastic. Hey, you know, that the way that
- 1:07:36we function allows you to have a family and do the things and and
- 1:07:42that you couldn't have done 15 years ago you when you are.
- 1:07:46I'm throwing inaudible here on the conversation because you
- 1:07:50reminded me of it. I saw I saw a young Kevin
- 1:07:55Harvick so years ago, Kevin Harvick jumps over a car and is
- 1:08:00ready to take out. Greg Biffle.
- 1:08:02So, I saw at Kansas, you know, two guys, go out and on Pit
- 1:08:09Road. I thought it was Great
- 1:08:12entertainment, what was your thought?
- 1:08:16Well, I can tell you that 2002 for me sucked.
- 1:08:20It's just start the year and a lot of that was a show so you
- 1:08:28didn't need to jump over that car but you thought I'm gonna go
- 1:08:30at it. When you if I'd have been
- 1:08:31running good, I wouldn't have jumped over that car, right?
- 1:08:34Yes. But you know I think I think
- 1:08:36sometimes, you know, in order to keep yourself relevant, you got
- 1:08:39to do some things that are a little far-fetched, right?
- 1:08:42You're right mother in order to in order to in order to in order
- 1:08:46to in order to keep it entertaining.
- 1:08:51Man, I'm did you like it or not? This weekend broadcasting rare
- 1:08:57back? I mean, that was the one of the
- 1:08:59most solid landed punches. I think in NASCAR history.
- 1:09:03Yeah, my opinion. Ross gets a Ross gets a lot of
- 1:09:06grief, but he didn't do anything wrong there.
- 1:09:08He was just standing next to his car and the guy came down and he
- 1:09:11told him twice. He said, stop stop.
- 1:09:14And then he just pounded him, he's pulling him around like a
- 1:09:16little bitch. Like he was a little baby.
- 1:09:23I get I get torn on this kidney because I don't like it, you
- 1:09:28know, I think when the the security guards and the
- 1:09:30officials and everybody are there and you see something like
- 1:09:33that, you see, one guy get a shot in like if they're going to
- 1:09:37fight, they need to let him fight a little bit.
- 1:09:39Yeah, no, I didn't get it. They're not going to let them
- 1:09:41fight. We look silly.
- 1:09:43Yeah. Did you feel bad for Noah
- 1:09:45Braxton? Not getting that punch in.
- 1:09:48I did a little bit. I did too.
- 1:09:51And I think I think for me there's just something about it
- 1:09:55in everything that we do in today's world that I just I wish
- 1:10:00they would just fight in the parking lot with never know
- 1:10:02about it, right? Like if it's that big a deal
- 1:10:04like just go go somewhere else. I don't even I don't even know
- 1:10:09that. I don't even know that I liked
- 1:10:12it actually happened. Yeah, while you are.
- 1:10:15You are you are you going soft? I'm not going to stop time.
- 1:10:19Just looking at it from a national level, I don't know, I
- 1:10:25don't know, I don't know if we look professional or we don't
- 1:10:27look professional because sometimes I watch flame all
- 1:10:30Races and I watch them just look like a bunch of idiots.
- 1:10:34Chasing each other around the racetrack with Jack handles and
- 1:10:37stuff like that. It's entertaining to watch for.
- 1:10:40How is it? You know, how does it look from
- 1:10:43somebody that you know is watching from the outset?
- 1:10:47I don't know I'm torn because, you know, like I feel like if
- 1:10:50you walk down there and you, you know, are looking for a fight,
- 1:10:53you get punched in the mouth. It's okay.
- 1:10:55But I don't know. It's like it was all it all felt
- 1:10:58weird to me with the way that the crew guys were back and and
- 1:11:01the officials were standing right there and then you secure,
- 1:11:04Two guards in and one you know one punch in.
- 1:11:06It's like oh fights over so I don't know but it was a good
- 1:11:09shot swing. First sweetheart, you're making
- 1:11:13me keep going here because you're it's so good.
- 1:11:18I raced my dirt car inside the dome last year in December and
- 1:11:25you know, where the Rams played football.
- 1:11:27So I have to go through the last chance race.
- 1:11:31There's a lot of cars there, but it's called win and you're in.
- 1:11:34And I had to win it and I sent the car, I biked up a lot and I
- 1:11:38win the race on the very last lap and all of a sudden I can
- 1:11:42hear there's like 30,000 people I can hear and you know I was
- 1:11:45just in defense mode I'm like you are I'm well I'm like this I
- 1:11:49got to win this race, I win it. And I forget for a minute and I
- 1:11:53look around and I'm like, oh my God, I got to do something, I
- 1:11:57just can't, you know? So I get up and I do Ric Flair
- 1:12:02and I got out of the car and I knew I had to do something.
- 1:12:06I thought I couldn't go wrong doing Ric Flair.
- 1:12:08So, are you saying that? Sometimes it's okay to entertain
- 1:12:13the crowd, 100%. Wow, I like that.
- 1:12:18You have to look. That's, that's why those people
- 1:12:20are there, right? Sometimes you got to think about
- 1:12:22what's happening. You got to think about the
- 1:12:23circumstances, you got to think about the moment and maybe
- 1:12:26that's what know is thinking about, but it just didn't turn
- 1:12:29out. We're obviously looking it,
- 1:12:31didn't. It didn't turn out exactly
- 1:12:34exactly how it should have been. But absolutely, you always have
- 1:12:38to think about entertaining the crowd and being in the moment
- 1:12:42and realizing where you are and what you're doing, and how to
- 1:12:46capitalize on a situation and get the most out of it.
- 1:12:49Because that's, that's part of your job is to entertain those
- 1:12:53people, not only to be exciting, but they want to know.
- 1:12:57They want to see the fire and the passion, and the care, and
- 1:12:59the love. And every other feeling in the
- 1:13:01world that you have. With what you do.
- 1:13:04Because I mean that's just that's just part of part of how
- 1:13:10it all works and and you know I think sometimes you just got to
- 1:13:14you got to recognize the moment and do what you think is right?
- 1:13:18Right. You got to jump up on top of
- 1:13:19that car even though it's a be main, there's 30,000 people
- 1:13:21cheering for you. There was more of them that more
- 1:13:24more videos showed of you standing on the cart that dirt
- 1:13:27race, then the guy that one. Yeah, Kevin, you were fantastic
- 1:13:30Aisha. I really appreciate you so much.
- 1:13:34I want to congratulate you on. I mean, there's still a lot of
- 1:13:37racing to go but I see all good things.
- 1:13:39I see what you're doing with Keelan.
- 1:13:42He's going to be a great race car driver that, that little
- 1:13:45daughter Piper. She's the love of your life.
- 1:13:48That Elena is behind you. You got the most beautiful
- 1:13:52family. I love you.
- 1:13:54I want to thank you for teaching me, finally, how to get around
- 1:13:56Atlanta, but I did run really good that race and up But
- 1:14:00listen, everybody that's it. Kevin Harvick the man he's done
- 1:14:05it all. And as we wind down here,

- 1:14:46Kevin Harvick. Justin marks they, in my
- 1:14:49opinion, they really help the cars Tour series, they own it
- 1:14:52now, and I'm going to drive the cars towards Series race, it's
- 1:14:56going to be met. 27th at Tri County Speedway and up them.
- 1:15:02You were the one that texted me? Do you remember how to run
- 1:15:05Asphalt? And I'm like, I got this.
- 1:15:08Hey good job. I've had I've had more fun
- 1:15:11practice in my late model and just watching Rodney build it
- 1:15:14and everything that we've done in our shop.
- 1:15:16So you're going to you're going to have a blast there.

- 1:15:26ready to pull straighter out of the dirt series.
- 1:15:29And putting back on asphalt, we're going to have like, some
- 1:15:31Kenny Wallace Ken Schrader Grudge matches.
- 1:15:35It's awesome. What do you think?
- 1:15:36We still, we still love rice and we're not going to give up and
- 1:15:39we're never going to sit on the couch and I know you won't be
- 1:15:42there. That's, that's the best.
- 1:15:43My favorite part about Racers is we all sometimes we all talk
- 1:15:47about this, screw that screw this.
- 1:15:50We all loved it so much, we aren't going anywhere.
- 1:15:52So tired of Will it until we get home run today and sit on the

- 1:15:57Well I buddy, thank you so much. Everybody once again, listen to
