- 0:00Chapter 13 of Hosea, dear God, please be with us as we read
- 0:06through this chapter and maybe more and give us wisdom and
- 0:11insight and let us know what you want us to take away from after
- 0:17reading this scripture in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:22The Lord's anger against Israel. When Ephraim spoke, people
- 0:26trembled. He he was exalted in Israel, but
- 0:32he became guilty of Bale worship and died.
- 0:37Now they sin more and more. They make idols for themselves
- 0:40from their silver cleverly fashioned images.
- 0:44All of them the work of Craftsman.
- 0:48It is said of these people, they offer human sacrifices, they
- 0:53kiss calf idols. Therefore, they will be like the
- 0:59morning mist, like the early dew that disappears, like chafing
- 1:05swirling from a like chafe, swirling from a threshing floor,
- 1:11like smoke escaping through a window.
- 1:15But I have been the Lord your God ever since you came out of
- 1:18Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but
- 1:21me, no savior except me. So when I read that, I just
- 1:26thought no savior except me. Ultimately, that's Jesus,
- 1:31because Jesus is a savior and Jesus is God.
- 1:36Continuing on, I cared for you in the wilderness, in the land
- 1:41of burning heat. When I fed them, they were
- 1:44sacrificed. When they were satisfied, they
- 1:47became proud. Then they forgot me.
- 1:51So I will be like a lion to them, like a leopard.
- 1:54I will lurk by the path like a bear robbed of her Cubs.
- 2:00So I I thought this was kind of interesting because he
- 2:02references a lion, a leopard and a bear.
- 2:05And these are the same entities that are that appear in Daniel's
- 2:10dream in Chapter 7, the lion, the leopard and the bear.
- 2:14So again, it seems like God is certainly speaking through these
- 2:20prophets, Hosea, and also through Daniel, and he's telling
- 2:24of a similar thing continuing on in Scripture.
- 2:28I will attack them and RIP them open like a lion.
- 2:31I will devour them. A wild animal will tear them
- 2:35apart. You are destroyed, Israel,
- 2:38because you are against me, against your helper.
- 2:44Where is your king that he may save you?
- 2:46Where are your rulers in all your towns, of whom you said
- 2:50give me a king and Princess? So in my anger I gave you a
- 2:54king, and in my wrath I took him away.
- 2:58The guilt of Ephraim is stored up, his sins are kept on record.
- 3:03Pains of a woman in childbirth come to him, but he is like a
- 3:07child without wisdom. So this is interesting because
- 3:12it's like he's experiencing the pain, but he doesn't understand
- 3:16why he's experiencing the pain. Ephraim, which is, you know,
- 3:21symbolic of the people of Israel, of the Northern Kingdom.
- 3:25And, and there's a lack of wisdom.
- 3:28So there's one thing to have knowledge, but applied knowledge
- 3:32is wisdom, so it says. But he is a child without
- 3:36wisdom. So he may have the knowledge, he
- 3:38may know Scripture, but he doesn't apply it and doesn't see
- 3:42it for what it really is. And I think we can all end up
- 3:46like that at times. We may know these things, but do
- 3:50we apply it to our lives? So pains as of a woman in
- 3:56childbirth come to him, but he is a child without wisdom.
- 4:00When the time arrives, he doesn't have the sense to come
- 4:05out of the womb. So he's experiencing pain, but
- 4:09he doesn't, he's not like reborn.
- 4:12Like Jesus said, in order to enter the Kingdom of God we must
- 4:16be born again. So if he doesn't have the wisdom
- 4:20to come out, then it's it's not going to help.
- 4:26I will deliver this people from the power of the grave.
- 4:30I will redeem them from death. Of course that is Jesus
- 4:35ultimately. Where O death are your plagues?
- 4:39Where, O grave, is your destruction?
- 4:42I will have no compassion, even though he thrives among his
- 4:46brothers. An E wind from the Lord will
- 4:49come blowing in from the desert. His spring will fail and his
- 4:54well dry up. His storehouse will be
- 4:57plundered. All of its of all of its
- 5:00treasures. The people of Samaria must bear
- 5:04their guilt because they have rebelled against their God.
- 5:09They will fall by the sword. Their little ones will be dashed
- 5:13to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.
- 5:17So that's pretty harsh. That's the end of chapter 13.
- 5:21I will go ahead and read chapter 14 as well, and then we'll go
- 5:24through the questions and answers.
- 5:26Repentance to bring blessing. This is really important for all
- 5:30of us. Repentance to bring blessing
- 5:33Chapter 14 return Israel to the Lord your God.
- 5:39Your sins have been your downfall.
- 5:41So when we're sometimes when we are experiencing troubles, it's
- 5:46because of our sins and we can all learn from that.
- 5:50Other times it might be testing us where we're not doing
- 5:53anything wrong, but there's, there's evil that's coming
- 5:55against us and God is testing what we do about that.
- 5:59And ultimately God wants us to turn to him when those things
- 6:02happen in a period of testing. But it's, it's really to see
- 6:06like, what do we do? It's our own testing and that's
- 6:10why we need to know Scripture. That's how Jesus overcame
- 6:13temptations that the devil was giving him right after he got
- 6:16baptized, he went into the wilderness and was tempted by
- 6:19the by Satan for 30 days. And Satan would offer these
- 6:26things that were appealing to him at the time based on the
- 6:29circumstances he was going through.
- 6:30But he would Jesus would reply with scripture and contradict
- 6:36what Satan would say. That's why we need to really
- 6:38have the word of God, you know, ingrained in our thoughts so
- 6:44that when the enemy comes to make us question things, we can
- 6:48know from Scripture what the truth is because the enemy will
- 6:52try to feed us lies or twist the truth.
- 6:55But if we don't know the word of God, well, we can be deceived.
- 6:59And so that's a lesson that all of us can learn from today.
- 7:04OK, Return Israel to the Lord your God.
- 7:06Your sins have been your downfall.
- 7:08Take words with you. Isn't that interesting?
- 7:10Take words, the words of Scripture with you and return to
- 7:13the Lord. Say to him, forgive all our sins
- 7:18and receive us graciously that we may offer the fruit of our
- 7:23lips. So the fruit of our lips like
- 7:27service, the outward evidence of having the Holy Spirit, that we
- 7:34may serve God, and it may be used that we may, There may be
- 7:38good things that come from us, and that we may do God's will.
- 7:42Assyria cannot save us. We will not mount war horses.
- 7:47We will never again say our gods plural to what our own hands
- 7:54have made. For in you the fatherless, find
- 7:58compassion again. This is, you know, God is our
- 8:04Father, He is our Creator. He made us so, and he loves us.
- 8:10I will heal their waywardness and love them freely.
- 8:15So even though Ephraim is going against God, he is standing by
- 8:21his promise to the ancestors Abraham, then Isaac.
- 8:26And he says, I will heal their waywardness and love them
- 8:30freely, for my anger has turned away from them.
- 8:34I will be like dew, like the dew to Israel.
- 8:39He will blossom like a Lily, like a cedar of Lebanon.
- 8:44He will send down his roots. His young shoots will grow.
- 8:49His splendor will be like an olive tree, his fragrance like a
- 8:54cedar of Lebanon. People will dwell again in his
- 8:59shade. They will flourish like the
- 9:02grain. They will blossom like the vine.
- 9:05Israeli fame will be like the wine of Lebanon.
- 9:10Ephron. What more have I to do with
- 9:14idols? I will answer him and care for
- 9:17him. I am like a flourishing juniper.
- 9:22Your fruitfulness comes from me. So again, God is our Father and
- 9:27He is promising restoration here.
- 9:30Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
- 9:35Who is discerning? Let them understand the ways of
- 9:39the Lord are right. The righteous walk in them, but
- 9:44the rebellious stumble in them. So the sooner we accept God's
- 9:49ways of righteousness, the better off we will be.
- 9:53But a lot of us, you know, look at God's ways as not appealing.
- 9:59But it does work. Over time when you read
- 10:04Scripture, your mind does change and you do see it for what it is
- 10:08and that, you know, instead of being confused by what the the
- 10:13world feeds us. So I will go through the
- 10:16questions and answers and then we'll wrap this up.
- 10:18This might be a really short podcast.
- 10:20Did Israel really offer human sacrifices?
- 10:23The Israelites had adopted forms of Pagan worship and had even
- 10:28sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire.
- 10:32You can find that in Second Kings chapter 17 verse 17.
- 10:36Some think the practice was not literal sacrifice, but a ritual
- 10:41intended to give children extra vitality and strength from the
- 10:46gods. The extraordinarily strong
- 10:50language used to denounce these Pagan rites, however, leads most
- 10:54to believe it referred to actual human sacrifice.
- 11:00What were these calf idols? Huge calf idols had been erected
- 11:05by Jeroboam, the first at Bethel or Bethavan and at Dan.
- 11:11So you can see why Ephraim and Dan kind of get the tribe of
- 11:15Ephraim and then also city of Dan.
- 11:18Just that they really, there's some harsh things that are said
- 11:22against it because they've really gone deep into the
- 11:25idolatry. They resembled the golden calf
- 11:28the Israelites had worshipped at Mount Sinai found in Exodus 32.
- 11:36Why so much violence? Israel was in a covenant
- 11:40relationship with the Lord and had been warned about the
- 11:44consequences of unfaithfulness. In Leviticus 26 verses 14
- 11:49through 45, in Deuteronomy 28, verses 15 through 68, the
- 11:54Israelites could have averted the destruction by repenting,
- 11:59but they chose not to. So, OK, so this is something
- 12:03that we can all learn from right now, like if we are far from
- 12:05God, if we are on against God, rebellious to God, we can be
- 12:12certain that there are going to be consequences of that.
- 12:16But if we repent, which doesn't mean only saying I'm sorry and
- 12:23then continuing to live the way we were living, but repent means
- 12:27to ask for forgiveness and then commit to changing the ways with
- 12:33the help of God, relying on God so that we can change.
- 12:38Because if we try to do it on our own, we're not that strong.
- 12:41So we need the help of God to change and to become more like
- 12:46God. We need God to become more like
- 12:48him because we are, we are not. So anyway, going back to this,
- 12:52this strong language was an attempt by the Lord to get
- 12:56Israel's attention. He was taking severe action
- 13:00because Israel had refused to respond to him.
- 13:04Up to this point, I've pretty much experienced that in my own
- 13:08life. I think God probably was trying
- 13:10to reach me many times and I was ignoring it.
- 13:13And then finally God had to do some really big things to make
- 13:17me pay attention. And it did catch my attention,
- 13:21and I'm thankful for it, but I didn't like going through what I
- 13:25went through. So why didn't God give Israel a
- 13:29king if it made him angry? Sometimes God gives us what we
- 13:33want in order to teach us a lesson.
- 13:37For example, Israel demanded a human king for the wrong
- 13:40reasons. God gave them what they asked
- 13:43for and through the failure of many wicked leaders, rulers, the
- 13:49people were repeatedly LED into idolatry.
- 13:54Why did God still say he would have no compassion?
- 13:58The promise of blessing in the first part of the verse appears
- 14:02within the larger context of judgment.
- 14:05Death and the grave speak of the nations ultimate demise.
- 14:09But in spite of that, Hosea offered a glimmer of God's love
- 14:15as he spoke of God's promise to ransom and redeem His people.
- 14:20The nation, after being judged and destroyed would be restored,
- 14:25but for the moment God would show no compassion.
- 14:29How could such brutality be part of God's plan?
- 14:33A lot of people ask this question.
- 14:35We must understand these atrocities as consequences of
- 14:40Israel's rebellion. God's desire was to forgive and
- 14:45restore, but the tragic consequences of unrepentant sin
- 14:51can result in appalling calamities.
- 14:59What is the fruit of our lips? Earlier, Hosea had denounced the
- 15:03empty religious rituals of the people in chapter 6, verse 6 and
- 15:09Chapter 7, verse 14. Here he elaborated further by
- 15:14describing A genuine sacrifice as lips that sincerely offer
- 15:19one's whole being to God. The fruit of our lips is a
- 15:23phrase used to describe human praise and Thanksgiving in
- 15:27worship, and that's found in Hebrews chapter 13, verse 15.
- 15:34Have God's promises to Israel been fulfilled?
- 15:37While some point to certain aspects of these promises that
- 15:41have been fulfilled at various stages of Israel's history, the
- 15:45ultimate fulfillment is yet to come at the second coming of
- 15:49Christ. How is God like a firm,
- 15:53flourishing juniper? This is the only place in the
- 15:56Old Testament where the analogy of a tree used to is used to
- 16:01describe God. The point is that of all of
- 16:05Ephraim's fruitfulness, the point is that all of Ephraim's
- 16:08fruitfulness came from God, not idols.
- 16:13Is full of life and strength and year round vitality.
- 16:17Israel. Israel's life sprang from him
- 16:21and from him alone. How can rebellion make people
- 16:25stumble? For those who walk in sin, the
- 16:29right way of the Lord looks so harsh and demanding that it
- 16:33becomes an excuse to further sin.
- 16:37People who rebel against God tend to make the right way
- 16:41appear too difficult to follow. But in reality, God says he will
- 16:47give us help with that. And that's where the Holy Spirit
- 16:49comes in. When we really want to be close
- 16:52to God but we struggle with sin. That's where it says in your
- 16:57weakness, I am your strength. That's basically what God says
- 17:01through the Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit gives us
- 17:05power to overcome sin. Grace is the power of the Holy
- 17:11Spirit. We are saved by grace, the power
- 17:14of the Holy Spirit. That's how we are saved.
- 17:16Jesus died on the cross and resurrected.
- 17:19He defeated death. He made it possible for us to be
- 17:22in God's Kingdom. But we need to repent.
- 17:25We need to receive the Holy Spirit from God, and we need to
- 17:30be obedient to God to do his will.
- 17:33And that's basically what is needed for salvation.
- 17:37So if you're not there, it's a great time to make that decision
- 17:44and let God know what your decision is.
