Transcript
- 0:00Good morning, Grace Harbor. It's Dan.
- 0:03Happy Tuesday!
- 0:04I hope you're staying warm wherever you are because it is CHILLY
- 0:08here.
- 0:09But it's also a beautifully bright and clear morning,
- 0:12and I have a hot cup of coffee,
- 0:14so I'm all ready for our time together this morning.
- 0:18I don't think I got the chance to tell you yesterday that we have the official
- 0:22lighting of the town Christmas tree in the Village Green tomorrow.
- 0:26This is one of my favorite events we have all year.
- 0:29It's a big Christmas block party, and it feels like everyone in town comes out.
- 0:34There's hot chocolate and snacks.
- 0:37There's live music. There's games.
- 0:39And of course, there's the chance to get your photo with Santa and Mrs.
- 0:43Claus.
- 0:44Practically every business and organization in town
- 0:47is responsible for some part of the event.
- 0:50Our church does a cookie booth, and by that
- 0:53I mean we give away 500 cookies.
- 0:57As you can imagine, this event takes a lot of work.
- 1:00There's actually a Tree Lighting Committee
- 1:02that starts meeting in the summer, just to be sure everything's organized.
- 1:06And for our part, we start organizing the cookie baking a month ahead of time.
- 1:11That's because, while we have folks who bake cookies for us every year.
- 1:15There are always families who are either new to the church or want to help out
- 1:20for the first time, and we don't want them to feel stressed out by any of it.
- 1:24We want them to have fun,
- 1:26both when they make the cookies and when they attend the event.
- 1:30So we put intentional thought into our preparation
- 1:33to be sure everyone gets the most out of it.
- 1:36And hey, you know what?
- 1:38That's actually not a bad way to think about the special season
- 1:42we just started on Sunday called Advent.
- 1:45It's when we spend four weeks getting our hearts ready for Christmas.
- 1:49I mean, we could just wake up on Christmas,
- 1:53open some presents, eat some cookies, and have a good time.
- 1:56But Christmas is about so much more than that.
- 2:00But don't worry, we have plenty of time to talk about
- 2:04all of this as Christmas approaches.
- 2:07For now, let's prepare for our day.
- 2:10We're going to do that by practicing one of our core disciplines:
- 2:14Setting intentions.
- 2:16Take a minute and think about what you're doing today.
- 2:19It might look the same as yesterday, like going to school.
- 2:23But that's okay because ordinary days
- 2:26are part of extraordinary lives.
- 2:29And a big thing we're going to talk about over and over again
- 2:33is the idea that how we do things
- 2:36is as important as what we do.
- 2:39And how you approach your day today
- 2:41might be different than how you approached yesterday.
- 2:45So let's do a little time travel using our imagination.
- 2:49Whether you're a kid heading to school or an adult heading to a day
- 2:53full of work or errands,
- 2:55let's pretend the day is already over and we're getting ready for bed.
- 3:00How do you want to be able to describe today?
- 3:04Let's pick one word that captures how you want your day to feel.
- 3:08Maybe it's “fun.”
- 3:09You want to have a day that brings you joy.
- 3:12Maybe it's “patient.”
- 3:14You know,
- 3:15today might have some frustrating parts and you want to handle them calmly.
- 3:20Maybe it's “helpful.”
- 3:21You want to help someone else have a brighter day. For me,
- 3:25with 500 cookies to be ready to hand out by tomorrow,
- 3:29I'm choosing “organized” because I want to stay focused on meeting that goal.
- 3:35Now take a moment to think about the word you want to be able
- 3:38to use to describe today.
- 3:40If you're not sure, that's okay.
- 3:42Your adult can help you think of one.
- 3:44Once everyone has their word.
- 3:46Go ahead and share it with each other.
- 3:48If you need more time,
- 3:50you can pause the podcast, and I'll be right here when you get back.
- 4:14Now here's something important to remember:
- 4:17We can't control everything about our day.
- 4:20And despite our best intentions,
- 4:23things may go wrong, or at least differently than we planned.
- 4:27But the word we focus on helps us decide how we might respond.
- 4:32So, for example, I'm planning on driving around to all of my volunteer bakers
- 4:37this afternoon to pick up the cookies and bring them to the church.
- 4:41But what happens if I get a flat tire and I can't make it to everyone's house?
- 4:46I could focus on how I can't
- 4:48do what I planned to do and get mad about it.
- 4:51Or I can remember that my goal was to be organized,
- 4:56and I just have to find a new way to be organized -
- 4:59like calling some friends and asking them to help me pick up the cookies.
- 5:03Okay,
- 5:04let's close our time together this morning with a prayer.
- 5:07If you want to, you can close your eyes and fold your hands.
- 5:11Dear God, we thank you for all of the exciting things
- 5:15that are coming today and tomorrow
- 5:18and over the next couple of weeks as Christmas approaches.
- 5:21Help us to balance both
- 5:23getting ready for all that's coming and being fully present today.
- 5:28Amen.
- 5:29All right, friends.
- 5:30Have a great Tuesday, and I'll talk to you tonight.
