- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe-and yep, Edwin Carrington is here with me again.
- 0:06Edwin, I've been thinking about something we touched on a few episodes
- 0:09ago...You know how a resume can make someone look like a total rockstar-but
- 0:13then, like, two weeks in, you're wondering what on earth just happened?
- 0:13Ha-yeah,
- 0:17that's a classic.
- 0:18Happens more than people admit.
- 0:20Most hiring still leans on experience,
- 0:22a list of past roles, and a bit of...
- 0:24gut instinct.
- 0:25But here's the thing-if you don't nail the fit,
- 0:29even the most impressive background can turn into a very expensive mistake.
- 0:33And not just in terms of money-it affects morale,
- 0:37productivity...
- 0:38even your reputation as a team.
- 0:38Totally.
- 0:41I've lived through that.
- 0:42My first tech job-we hired this developer,
- 0:45and on paper, he was incredible.
- 0:47Like, Ivy League, open-source projects,
- 0:49the whole thing.
- 0:50But within a month?
- 0:51Boom.
- 0:52Team vibe just... cracked.
- 0:54He was smart, yeah, but he didn't gel with anyone.
- 0:57Didn't believe in the way we worked.
- 0:59And I just remember thinking, "How the heck did we miss that?"That's
- 1:03exactly it.
- 1:03When you hire purely for skills,
- 1:06you miss the deeper stuff-like values,
- 1:08working style, expectations.
- 1:11And those hidden costs?
- 1:13They sneak up on you.
- 1:14I've seen studies that show a bad hire can cost up to 30% of their first-year
- 1:19salary.
- 1:20But it's more than dollars.
- 1:21It slows projects down, eats up managers' time,
- 1:25and drains your team's energy.
- 1:27It spreads.
- 1:27And it's not just the people who leave,
- 1:30right?
- 1:30Some folks stay-but they're like...
- 1:31just there.
- 1:32Going through the motions.
- 1:34That can honestly be worse than turnover.
- 1:34Exactly.
- 1:37Disengagement is sneaky-and contagious.
- 1:40Like we talked about in the retention episode,
- 1:43it's not that there aren't good people out there.
- 1:45It's just-we're not always looking for the right things.
- 1:48Long-term success comes down to fit,
- 1:51not just technical chops.
- 1:51Okay,
- 1:53so if hiring for skills is such a gamble... what even is fit?
- 1:57Like, what does that really mean-and how do you measure it?
- 2:00'Cause that's what I really want to dive into next."Fit" gets tossed
- 2:03around a lot, but it's not just about getting along.
- 2:06At its core, it's alignment-between someone's values,
- 2:11work style, and expectations... and your company's culture.
- 2:14It's the difference between someone who fills a seat-and someone who
- 2:19actually moves your mission forward.
- 2:19So,
- 2:21it's not just like, "Are they friendly?" or "Do they vibe?" It's more
- 2:24like...
- 2:25do they thrive in your kind of environment?
- 2:27Do they care about the same things?
- 2:29Is that it?
- 2:29That's a big part of it,
- 2:31yeah.
- 2:31Think about someone who loves chaos,
- 2:34speed, making decisions on the fly-they're gonna feel boxed in at a place
- 2:38that runs on process and precision.
- 2:40And vice versa.
- 2:41So before you even post a job,
- 2:43you've got to define your culture.
- 2:45Who are you?
- 2:46What do you value?
- 2:47Without that... fit's just guesswork.
- 2:47Right-and once you know what you're
- 2:52about, you can start figuring out what kind of person actually fits that.
- 2:56I remember we talked about behavioral interviews before-like instead
- 3:00of asking, "What's your greatest strength?" you say,
- 3:03"Tell me about a time you dealt with team conflict." That's where you
- 3:06get the real stuff-how someone actually operates.
- 3:06Exactly.
- 3:11Behavioral questions surface instincts and attitudes-not just rehearsed
- 3:15answers.
- 3:16But you can go even deeper with data.
- 3:18OAD's fit assessments, for example-they measure things like personality
- 3:23traits, how people process information,
- 3:26even emotional intelligence.
- 3:28It takes you beyond the paper credentials and gives you a clearer picture
- 3:32of alignment.
- 3:32I love that.
- 3:34And just to be clear-it's not about hiring clones,
- 3:37right?
- 3:37Like, the goal isn't to build some weird workplace cult.
- 3:40It's about finding people whose strengths actually click with your team.
- 3:43I always think of Zappos-they hire for culture first,
- 3:47and it shows.
- 3:48People stay.
- 3:49They feel like they belong.
- 3:49Exactly.
- 3:51Zappos isn't just throwing around buzzwords.
- 3:54Their strategy is intentional-and measurable.
- 3:58When you bring in behavioral data and fit surveys,
- 4:01you're not playing the guessing game anymore.
- 4:03You're building a team on purpose.
- 4:03Okay-so once you do find someone who
- 4:07feels like a great fit... what's next?
- 4:10How do you make sure that alignment sticks once they're in the door?
- 4:10That's
- 4:13where trial projects and onboarding come into play.
- 4:16Because, honestly, anyone can say the right things in an interview.
- 4:21But how do they actually work?
- 4:23A short trial task-just a couple hours-can show you how they think,
- 4:28communicate, handle ambiguity.
- 4:30It's a real-world preview.
- 4:30And onboarding's not just filling out HR forms,
- 4:35right?
- 4:35It's about making people feel like part of something.
- 4:37I've read that companies like Netflix and Patagonia-like,
- 4:40they really invest in that early stage.
- 4:42They connect new folks to mentors,
- 4:44walk them through values, explain how their role ties into the bigger
- 4:47mission.
- 4:47That stuff sticks.
- 4:47It does.
- 4:50The first few weeks shape everything.
- 4:52People decide early whether this is just a job-or something worth committing
- 4:57to.
- 4:57When onboarding reinforces your culture,
- 5:00sets expectations clearly, and creates connection-it's a game-changer.
- 5:05I worked with a manufacturing company once-tons of turnover,
- 5:09mostly because they hired for skills and ignored culture.
- 5:13We changed that.
- 5:14Started using fit assessments,
- 5:16added trial projects, reworked their onboarding.
- 5:19A year later, their turnover was cut in half.
- 5:22The team gelled.
- 5:24Performance went up.
- 5:24That's such a cool example.
- 5:27And it proves the point-skills can be taught.
- 5:29But if someone fits?
- 5:31If they're aligned with how your team works?
- 5:33That's when things really start clicking.
- 5:33Exactly.
- 5:36Fit isn't a box you check once.
- 5:39It's a strategy.
- 5:40And when you get it right-you protect your culture,
- 5:43your performance, and your future.
- 5:43Alright-that's a wrap for today.
- 5:47And if you're ready to see how science-backed fit tools can actually
- 5:50transform your hiring, go to O-A-D-dot-A-I-that's oad.
- 5:50ai-and take a look
- 5:56for free.
- 5:56Seriously, it's worth a look.
- 5:56Absolutely.
- 5:59The right tools make all the difference.
- 5:59Thanks for hanging out with us.
- 6:03We'll be back soon with more on building teams that actually work.
- 6:06Take care, Edwin.
- 6:06Take care, Claire.
- 6:08Bye, everyone.
