- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 112, Psalm
- 0:20112, we are making our way through Book 5 of Psalms, and
- 0:24this Psalm says this Hallelujah, that is praise the Lord.
- 0:29Happy is the person who fears Yahweh, taking great delight in
- 0:34His commands. His descendants will be powerful
- 0:37in the land. The generation of the upright
- 0:41will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in His
- 0:44house, and His righteousness endures forever.
- 0:48Light shines in the darkness for the upright.
- 0:52He is gracious, compassionate and righteous.
- 0:55Goodwill come to the One who lends generously and conducts
- 0:59his business fairly. He will never be shaken.
- 1:03The righteous one will be remembered forever.
- 1:06He will not fear bad news. His heart is confident, trusting
- 1:11in Yahweh. His heart is assured.
- 1:14He will not fear. In the end, He will look in
- 1:17triumph on his foes. He distributes freely to the
- 1:21poor. His righteousness endures
- 1:24forever. His horn will be exalted in
- 1:27honor. The wicked one will see it and
- 1:30be angry. He will gnash his teeth in
- 1:33despair. The desire of the wicked leads
- 1:36to ruin. All right, so we've got here a
- 1:40very, very interesting Psalm. And this is one of those ones
- 1:45that as you read through it, there is probably not a
- 1:50indication for you that this is something normatively true
- 1:55within the world. That even as I read through, I
- 2:00don't have people very often coming to mind that I go, Oh
- 2:03yes, this perfectly encapsulates this person.
- 2:07So I want to remind us that there are a couple of things
- 2:11that are true here. Number one, this is Speaking of
- 2:15God's blessing, if you will. It's it's the blessing of Eden,
- 2:19of how God created our world to work from the beginning.
- 2:24That's the kind of thing that the psalmist here is talking
- 2:27about, about God's great blessing on a person.
- 2:31And so to that extent, until we are back in Eden, we are
- 2:36probably not going to experience what happens in this Psalm.
- 2:40We're not going to experience it all the time.
- 2:42We're not going to experience it in every season of our life.
- 2:47But that doesn't mean that the Psalm is not true, and it does
- 2:51not mean that we won't experience aspects of this Psalm
- 2:55as we follow the Lord. So let's walk through the Psalm
- 3:00together. And I think there are some very
- 3:02practical things that you and I can adopt into our life, even as
- 3:07we recognize God. This amazing kind of life, it
- 3:13isn't what I always experience right now, but it is the life
- 3:16that is coming for us. So I'm, I'm probably going to
- 3:21get to that portion of it. I'll, I'll put the cart before
- 3:24the horse right here for us. This is the life that we will
- 3:30experience when Jesus reigns on this earth and we reign with him
- 3:35as a Kingdom of priests to our God.
- 3:38We will experience this kind of life with Jesus as our King.
- 3:43This is the good life that we will experience throughout all
- 3:48of the ages that His blessings, His goodness towards us, we will
- 3:53get to experience it day after day after day, forever and ever.
- 3:58So it one day is coming. It will be true for us every
- 4:02single day, but we get to experience little glimpses of
- 4:06that someday, even here on earth.
- 4:09And so this ought to cause us to do what is right, to do what is
- 4:13good as God has called us to, while also recognizing in the
- 4:17times when we fall short of identic bliss, that is the good
- 4:23life that God planned for us in Eden, we can still rejoice in
- 4:28the good Providence and care of our God for us.
- 4:31So verse #1 Hallelujah. Happy is the person who fears
- 4:37Yahweh, taking great delight in His commands.
- 4:41So starting off the Psalm, before you get to any of the
- 4:44things about happiness and endless generations of good, you
- 4:49read this, that the person that truly fears Yahweh, the one that
- 4:55worships the Lord. I think we talked about an
- 4:58episode or two ago. Yes, there's an aspect of this
- 5:02that is reverential awe and terror of God that we recognize
- 5:07how amazing and how great and how powerful He is.
- 5:10And so as a result we ought to fear.
- 5:12But there's also the other aspect that we've mentioned that
- 5:16when we walk in relationship with God, we're walking in the
- 5:20fear of God. When we love Him and when we
- 5:22obey Him and when we pray to him, that is also walking in the
- 5:26fear of God. It's not just, wow, he could
- 5:28crush me, it's also man, He's so worthy of my respect and my love
- 5:33and my worship. So a person that fears Yahweh,
- 5:37that follows God, that has a relationship with God takes
- 5:42great delight in His commands. And I think here in my own life,
- 5:49how many times do I wish that I would would experience good day
- 5:53after good day, that all of my kids would be blessed, that my
- 5:57descendants would be powerful in the land, that God would give me
- 6:00wealth and riches. And I want the blessings that
- 6:04come from a relationship with God.
- 6:07But yet I don't take great delight in the commands of God.
- 6:11People want to be rich, but they don't want to give to the poor
- 6:15that people want to have generations worth of, you know,
- 6:19great kids that walk with Him and yet they will not personally
- 6:24worship and be rid of evil within their own life.
- 6:30It all starts with walking with God.
- 6:32It starts with fearing the Lord. It starts with taking great
- 6:35delight in the commands of God. Are God's commands His
- 6:40instructions for you? Is it something?
- 6:42Are they something that are a burden to you?
- 6:45Are they something that you are happy about?
- 6:48Are you happy to be told to walk in the fruit of the spirit?
- 6:52Are you happy to be told add to your faith virtue and a virtue
- 6:56knowledge and to knowledge self-control and, and to
- 6:59temperance, patience and the patience brotherly kindness and
- 7:02the brotherly kindness love are. Are you happy about the commands
- 7:05of God and are you wanting to follow those?
- 7:08Or are you a little annoyed that you have to actually walk with
- 7:14God or that you have to adopt His character into your life?
- 7:17May we take great delight in the commands of God and want to obey
- 7:22Him and emulate Him. So based on that, as we walk
- 7:27with God, here are the kinds of things that come out of our
- 7:31life. Verse #2 His descendants will be
- 7:34powerful in the land. The generation of the upright
- 7:38will be blessed. Now there's just a practical
- 7:44take away that we can have from verse #2 if you do evil, wicked,
- 7:51underhanded things, if you murder others, if you are
- 7:55constantly stealing from others, people will not be happy with
- 8:00you. There is whatever likelihood
- 8:02that people might try and take revenge on you, that you might
- 8:05be killed and you might not have descendants.
- 8:08Or if you are wicked and you are imprisoned, you're put into jail
- 8:14as a result of what you have done.
- 8:17Your kids, they aren't going to be raised well.
- 8:20They're not going to be raised with you loving them and caring
- 8:23for them, and instead they'll be all on their own.
- 8:27Set up your kids for success in their lives by being present, by
- 8:33actually being there, by loving them day after day so that they
- 8:39are not having to start over from scratch.
- 8:42They're not having to reinvent the wheel.
- 8:44They're not as they enter into adulthood, just trying to get
- 8:47their feet under them, but that you are able to put them on a
- 8:51trajectory towards a good life. I, I, I think there's many
- 8:56aspects of verse #2 that can be hopeful in our expectations as
- 9:02parents of what should we be doing?
- 9:05What should we be aiming for, if you will?
- 9:08And let's aim to help our kids go forward in a good and a godly
- 9:14way. I love that phrase there.
- 9:17The generation of the upright will be blessed.
- 9:20Let's be honest. Let's be straightforward.
- 9:22Let us be good and kind and having integrity in our dealings
- 9:27with others. Verse #3 Wealth and riches are
- 9:31in his house and his righteousness endures forever.
- 9:35I notice here it doesn't say, well his wealth and righteous.
- 9:39Sorry, his wealth and riches endure forever.
- 9:42Instead it says wealth and riches, they are in his house
- 9:46and his righteousness endures forever.
- 9:48The thing that more typifies a person that fears the Lord even
- 9:54more so than material goods, is an enduring walk with God, that
- 10:00they're doing right by God and by people.
- 10:03And so the righteousness endures forever.
- 10:05I think of the story of Job that at one point he had wealth and
- 10:08riches in his house, and then through sickness, through
- 10:11robbery, through tragedy, he lost his wealth and his riches.
- 10:17He lost his kids, his descendants, his his family
- 10:20members. But what did not go away was his
- 10:24integrity. And that was something that God
- 10:26even said to Satan. And so I want to be the kind of
- 10:30person that, you know, if I get wealth and riches, yeah, they
- 10:34are in my house. And I'm going to do what's right
- 10:36even with those, as we'll see in the following verses.
- 10:40But what sticks around in my life, I want it to be
- 10:43righteousness. If you had the choice between I
- 10:47can have wealth or I can have righteousness, which one would
- 10:51you want to stick around in your life if you had to choose
- 10:56between 1. I think the righteous man, the
- 10:58one that walks with God, the one that fears Yahweh, he's the one
- 11:02that he would rather have a right standing, right
- 11:05relationship with God and with people rather than having wealth
- 11:09and riches. And so may that be what we
- 11:12invest more into. Invest more into your character,
- 11:16invest more into your relationships with God and with
- 11:20people than you do even into your wealth.
- 11:23Now there are good uses of wealth even as we're going to
- 11:26see. Riches can be used to bless
- 11:29others, to bless the following generations after you, your
- 11:33kids, your grandkids. Wealth can be used to bless the
- 11:36poor. But even more important than
- 11:38that is that you would pass on righteousness and integrity,
- 11:43love for God and love for people.
- 11:45Verse #4 Light shines in the darkness for the upright here,
- 11:52even in dark times, in hardships and trials.
- 11:57Light shines for those that fear the Lord and in my moments of
- 12:05anguish in my soul and I, I tend to be a little bit more
- 12:10emotional of a person. And so I know that there is so
- 12:14many times in my life where I imagine that everything is much
- 12:18darker than it truly is. But as I walk with God, I can
- 12:22see that there is hope. There's hope for a future,
- 12:24there's hope in heaven. There's hope in my brothers and
- 12:27sisters in the Lord being there for me and being able to come
- 12:30alongside me. So I'm so grateful that light
- 12:34always shines even in the darkness for those that that are
- 12:38upright, if you will. This is saying there is hope on
- 12:41the horizon. Or in the words of another one
- 12:44of the Psalms, weeping may endure for the night, but joy
- 12:49comes in the morning. Verse #4 concludes with saying
- 12:53the upright is gracious, compassionate, and righteous,
- 12:58that they deal kindly and patiently with other people.
- 13:02They genuinely care about others, and so they are going to
- 13:05do right by them. Are you typified by this?
- 13:08Is your life typified by hope, by patience and love and
- 13:13compassion for others? That is how the upright person,
- 13:18the person that fears Yahweh, That's the way that they live.
- 13:21That's the way I want to live. I fail in that.
- 13:23I am impatient with other people.
- 13:25I'm like I, I don't want to be around people today that this is
- 13:29just the worst. No, God calls me to be
- 13:31compassionate. Even I think of Jesus as he sees
- 13:34people that are spiritually hungry.
- 13:38Yes, he saw people that were literally physically hungry,
- 13:41that he had a care for them and he was gracious.
- 13:43He was patient with them even in their failings.
- 13:46He's been patient with me and my failings.
- 13:48He had compassion on me. And so he did right by me.
- 13:53And so that's what I'm called to do, even to others.
- 13:56Verse #5 goodwill come to the one who lends generously and
- 14:00conducts his business fairly. God says His blessing is
- 14:05reserved for those that have a generous heart and that deal
- 14:10with integrity in their business for various people.
- 14:15I don't know what who all we have on the podcast even today,
- 14:22just whatever your business is, do it the right way.
- 14:25Don't cut the corners, Don't do things that are easy for you,
- 14:30but kind of short change your customers instead.
- 14:34Do all of your business dealings fairly.
- 14:36And then as God gives to you, give to others, give to those
- 14:42that are in need, give to God's work.
- 14:46Obviously we, we talked about that even in the book of Micah.
- 14:51So give to others, give to God's work, give if you will, give to
- 14:58your family for their future. So I, I want to explain what I
- 15:03mean here, especially nowadays. And I'm in an American context.
- 15:08I know we have some people from other countries as well, but in
- 15:11the American context, end of life can be so expensive.
- 15:16One way that you can be looking out for your family in the
- 15:18future is to invest in some things now.
- 15:22So maybe that might be you invest in a cemetery plot, or
- 15:27you invest right now through life insurance or something
- 15:31else. You invest in a casket, you
- 15:33invest in, you know, funeral costs and you make sure that
- 15:39your family is taken care of in the future when you are no
- 15:42longer there. That can be a way that you can
- 15:45give to others. And that can be a way that you
- 15:47give to help out the people that mean the most to you, that on
- 15:53their worst day, when you are no longer with them, they're not
- 15:57then also having to go through some financial hardship as a
- 16:01result of dealing with, you know, all of the added finances
- 16:06of funerals, costs, caskets, all of that.
- 16:11That can be a way that you love your family and through giving
- 16:15generously to them. I know that's not what the
- 16:19psalmist here had particularly in mind, but that is a, a,
- 16:23something that I've walked through even as a pastor
- 16:26interacting with many funerals and then even within some
- 16:29extended family members of mine. Even recently seeing all of that
- 16:35stuff take place made me go, oh, I need to be preparing for my
- 16:41eventual passing because none of us will live forever and God has
- 16:45not told us every single one of you is going to live to 95 years
- 16:49old. So when you get to 90, yeah, you
- 16:51should start planning that. No, people of all ages, of all
- 16:58different health statuses pass each and every day.
- 17:02Do what you can now to care for your family in the future.
- 17:07Verse number six. He will never be shaken.
- 17:09The righteous one will be remembered forever.
- 17:14As a pastor, I've been to funerals where people were very
- 17:18well loved, where they left a great legacy of love and
- 17:22kindness behind them. I've also been in the funerals
- 17:27where one or two family members were all that showed up and even
- 17:33they had almost nothing to say that it was, well, they kept to
- 17:39themselves. They had, you know, this one
- 17:42hobby that totally defined their life or this one pet or
- 17:46something that totally defined their life and they never made
- 17:50an impact. They never interacted really
- 17:53with other people and so they left behind almost no legacy.
- 17:59And so may we have a mindset that says I am indwelt by the
- 18:05Holy Spirit of God. I've been given the Great
- 18:07Commission by Jesus. And so my legacy at the end of
- 18:12the day isn't even really about me.
- 18:15I don't want to leave a name for me to be remembered, but I want
- 18:20people to know that God loves them.
- 18:23I want them to know that they are loved by me.
- 18:25And so I want to invest in others with my life.
- 18:29That a part of our legacy is we want to leave a legacy for
- 18:34others, that they will have experienced the love and care of
- 18:38Jesus through our lives. So have an intention that I'm
- 18:43going to be remembered by others, not because I was great,
- 18:47but because they know Jesus loves them because I loved them.
- 18:51Verse #7 I love this verse. He will not fear bad news.
- 18:56His heart is confident, trusting in Yahweh.
- 19:01I can tend to be a very anxious person and so this is something
- 19:04that is different than the way I often live my life.
- 19:08But if I want the blessed life, may I not fear bad news, but may
- 19:13I trust Yahweh. Our world loves fear.
- 19:17Fear sells. Fear will make you buy guns and
- 19:23ammo and you know the the underground bunkers and tons of
- 19:30non perishable food and and you can just stockpile all sorts of
- 19:36things as a result of fear. When you say God will take care
- 19:41of me, God will take care of my loved ones.
- 19:44The Lord the judge of all the earth will do what is right.
- 19:48And so I don't have to fear if I die, God will call me home, but
- 19:52I'm not going to live my life and anxiety of what could come.
- 19:57That's not if you will. That's not sexy.
- 20:00That doesn't sell things that won't get me on all of the news
- 20:05channels saying I'll just listen to what this guy has to say.
- 20:08We're all really in trouble. No, fear sells.
- 20:13Trust in the Lord doesn't sell. But it is what God has called us
- 20:16to. And we can have confidence in
- 20:18him. He has never once failed us.
- 20:20He never will. And so we can have confidence.
- 20:25Knowing who our God is verse #8 His heart is assured.
- 20:31He will not fear in the end, He will look in triumph on his
- 20:35foes. There are foes, there are
- 20:37enemies of the one that walks with God, but he's not scared of
- 20:41them because he knows who his God is, and so he can trust in
- 20:46him. Verse #9 He distributes freely
- 20:48to the poor. His righteousness endures
- 20:51forever. His horn will be exalted in
- 20:54honor. That is his strength.
- 20:55He will be highly esteemed by others because he cares, he
- 20:59loves, he's generous. People know that he is a person
- 21:03of integrity. I think they're in verse 9.
- 21:06He distributes freely to the poor.
- 21:08His righteousness endures forever.
- 21:10It's not an accident that those two are paired together.
- 21:13That those that are generous with their finances, especially
- 21:17towards those that don't have as much.
- 21:20That is the mark of a person that genuinely believes that God
- 21:24will take care of their needs, that God will keep them safe on
- 21:28the rainy day even as they have cared for others on their rainy
- 21:33days. I think right now of a person in
- 21:38my family that they have cared for a family friend of theirs
- 21:43for many years and their family friend has served the Lord has
- 21:49served the next generation, but they have not gotten financially
- 21:54rich as a result of that. But my family member, they have
- 21:59so loved and taken care of this other person and God has enabled
- 22:04my my family member to be a little bit better off in their
- 22:08financial state. And they have not used that
- 22:12financial state to just enrich themselves.
- 22:15They have consistently used the money that God has given them to
- 22:20bless others and to care for those that are poor, that don't
- 22:25have everything. And I am so, so grateful for
- 22:30times in my life where I have been blessed by those
- 22:33individuals. And I'm very thankful that they
- 22:36have exemplified this. I think of their righteousness,
- 22:39their right dealings with other people.
- 22:41It is clearly seen and they are exalted even in my eyes, that I
- 22:47think the world of those individuals because they have
- 22:51loved and cared for others. They are these righteous people.
- 22:56Verse #10 the wicked one, the one that doesn't walk with God,
- 23:00the one that doesn't fear Yahweh, He will see it.
- 23:02He'll see the generosity and the joy, the lack of fear that
- 23:07happens in the person that knows God.
- 23:10And the wicked one will be angry.
- 23:12He'll gnash his teeth in despair.
- 23:15I don't know if the sound would come through on the microphone
- 23:17if I did this, but you that are watching the, the video podcast,
- 23:20the gnashing of teeth is like you're just grinding your teeth.
- 23:25It's, it's a horrible, well, it's a horrible feeling.
- 23:29It's also just a horrible sound and and word picture just makes
- 23:35a person miserable who doesn't know God when they see God
- 23:39blessing people that by any worldly metric you look out for
- 23:44yourself and you just try and build your stack of gold as high
- 23:48as you can. But that's not the way God's
- 23:50people are called to live. So the wicked one, they're
- 23:53angry, they gnash their teeth in despair says the desire of the
- 23:57wicked leads to ruin. On the flip side, the desire of
- 24:02the godly leads to more and more, not because we want stuff
- 24:08for ourself, but because we want to share the blessing of God on
- 24:12our life. That Eden blessing.
- 24:15We're sharing it with others so that in our blessing, everyone
- 24:20around us would be blessed. I want to encourage you today as
- 24:23God blesses you, bless others. God's been good to you,
- 24:26compassionate to you, loving to you, forgiving of you.
- 24:30Pass all of those things on to others.
- 24:32If God has blessed you financially, choose to bless
- 24:35others financially, that would be an honoring and a glorifying
- 24:40thing to your God. It would be a rejection of greed
- 24:42and you'd say money. It's in my house, but my
- 24:46righteousness, my in my relationship with God and with
- 24:50people, that endures forever. It keeps on going.
- 24:53I'm going to keep on trusting the Lord in every circumstance.
- 24:57Well, this Psalm was frankly just an encouragement to my
- 25:00heart today. I hope it was an encouragement
- 25:02to you and looking forward next week to Psalm 113.
