- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:41SPEAKER_04: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: And Tristan, today has been an absolute roller coaster, my man.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: And ups and downs on day one of game week, huh?
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: So the big news of today, uh Roderick Thompson, the starting running back for your Texas Tech Red Raiders, arrested uh following a street racing incident that took place in June.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Um just what we needed in this season.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: You know, whenever I I first saw that and uh texted it to you, all I was thinking, I was like, of course.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Like this, you know, I was trying to find all the hope I could for the upcoming game, and I was just like, I kept going back to hey, we have this star running back in Sir Roger Thompson who may be able to have a game, may have a may go off on this UT team, and then it's just like this kid likes to go very fast, you know, he gets in trouble for it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: He likes to go fast, coach.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: So he likes to go fast, even in his vehicle.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: Oof.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Uh so very frustrating, but the good news is y'all fortunately is not suspended from the team at this time.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Uh apparently his uh the misdemeanor does not warrant a subsp uh suspension from the football team.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: A level two misconduct is what the team called it, uh, which does not mandate a suspension.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: So as of right now, uh he will be playing Saturday against Texas.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: So that's good news.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: It was kind of a roller coaster when you texted me that.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: I was I was driving home from uh visiting my girlfriend in Baton Rouge, and I was just like, Are you kidding me, man?
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Like, are you serious?
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: Street racing?
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: You we're gonna we're not gonna have the player that we had, we had like one true positive from last week, and well, two of them with the linebacking core and with Sir Rodrigue, but uh yeah, the rush game was like the one of the two positives, and we're like, okay, so that's gone, that's out the window.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: And then three hours later they came out and said that uh he was actually going to play.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: So thank goodness for that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: It's it's just like it's so it hurts us so bad whenever it happened because, like you said, last last week, whenever we were talking about the post-game, we're like, hey, I feel so good about this running back core.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: You know, I think if we can look for any solace, it's in that running back core, like you're saying.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: And it's just like, oh, of course, this guy who we think could be the star on the offense gets uh gets arrested for street racing on the on the roads of Lubbock.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: And uh it just it's painful, but I just thank goodness it was nothing that serious in the grand scheme of things.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: In the end of the day, I guess it's more of a glorified speeding ticket.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: Um I mean I was going I was going back and forth on how I wanted to talk about this, whether I wanted to rant about a guy doing something stupid or realize that hey, this guy's 20 years old, he's gonna make some mistakes.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: I was I was semi, I wasn't glad to hear of this, but I was you know happier to hear that it wasn't such uh you know a vicious crime or something like that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: And I think that's an appropriate response going into hearing something like that.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, at the end of the day, he it's he's a role model and uh and he's a leader on the team.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: You know, you can't be getting mugshots and represent those two things.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's but at the end like you said, it's thankfully nothing too serious.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: It's not it's not like he'll out there um doing heinous things like you've seen in the past and and some worse headlines when in regards to athletes.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Um so like you said, uh thankfully it just looks like guys having too much fun with their cars.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: It's not excusable, but I mean, hey, I've gotten speeding tickets.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: It's it's young people are stupid behind the wheel.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's you know, 20-year-old guy, they're gonna make some mistakes um and hopefully he learn from it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: The instance was back in June, uh, so it's not like it happened, you know, yesterday or something, but uh yeah, hopefully, hopefully that'll get all handled and out of the way.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: And we wanted to worry about it the rest of the year.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, that was that was some unfortunate news, but uh not so unfortunate, you know what I'm saying.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: I thought I thought we were gonna be like, okay, how long is he out for?
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Although we're probably having this discussion about can Taj Brooks can Taj Brooks take over the role?
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: Like, we're gonna start a true freshman at this, we're gonna have to play the uh Chedarius Townsend more.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Like, what the heck are we gonna do?
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: But uh as of right now, Sir Rodrick will be playing against Texas, so that's good news.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And I hope this isn't a distraction in the locker room.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Obviously, I hope the coaches get the message across, but I hope it doesn't detour anybody's mindset going against the Longhorns because we need all the focus we can get.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: So um moving on to a little bit of still love you, Sir Roderick, my man.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Still love you, Sir Rodrick.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: And he seems like a pretty good kid from what we've seen.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: So it's just dumb stuff.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: He does, absolutely.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: He's a he's a fantastic player.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: So um moving on, we are moving to some happy news.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Uh Sandy Scott, Texas Tech Golf, participated in the uh U.S.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: Open.
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: He is the first ever red raider that currently plays on the team to qualify for the U.S.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: Open, which is awesome.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's a uh kind of a super senior, he got an extra year of eligibility because of COVID last year.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: So uh he's playing in his kind of super super senior year, but um Scottish-born dude, uh, fantastic golfer for Texas Tech all through his tenure here.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: And it's cool just seeing him represent Texas Tech uh in you know one of the biggest golf tournaments there is.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: And it's so cool to see all these sports on campus just really kidding so good.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: All these ships are rising in the water under Kirby Holcutt, uh, except for unfortunately at this moment, football, which is gonna be the main topic of the episode.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: But it's but it's it's so great to see all these sports just become something to really talk about.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: And uh we're talking about a guy competing in a major golf tournament.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, how when have we ever been able to say that about a red raider?
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: So it's unbelievable.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: And these sports don't get enough credit, they don't get talked about a lot.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, the tennises and the golfs of the world, uh, but it's it's great to see a guy go represent uh Texas Tech over there at the U.S.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: Open.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: He didn't make the uh the uh like the secondary qualifier or whatever it is, um, but he was he was pretty close.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: And for being that young, you know, competing with the best of the best in the world, I remember seeing a tweet where uh I think he birdied his first his first hole or something, and he was like top six.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: And he saw him up there with like Dustin Johnson and some other top golfers, and that was really cool to see.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, unfortunately, he didn't finish that, but uh uh good uh good experience for him for sure.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Looks like all those rounds on what is considered one of the best Calichic golf courses in the country, the Rawls in Lubbock, Texas, really paid off for him.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: So happy to see him, and nothing's more fun than watching Red Raiders take off in the professional leagues either.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: So great for him, nothing but the best.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Let's see that.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Let's see this British Red Raider get it, man.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: That's so fun.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: Do the Scots like it if you call them British?
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, they're they're part of Britain officially.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: But the Scotsman, British Scotsman.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: I don't know, they might be upset.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, just it's not just the English that are British.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: So I don't know things.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: I'm not cultured and I'm not cultured enough for this.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, he also had coach uh Coach Greg Sands for the golf team caddied for him during his his round, which was really cool.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: Uh they spent the whole time together.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: They said it was just an awesome experience for him and a great learning uh learning deal for him.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: So uh he's now ranked the number six, uh, number six in the world for amateurs, which is awesome.
- 8:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, of the whole entire world, he's ranked number six, so that's really cool to see.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: No doubt, man.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: That's that's sick.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Uh and another uh another uh tidbit of sports on campus, our Lady Raiders also kicked it off uh last Friday, literally.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Um, ended up in a tie against the Baylor Bears, but a uh it's it's better than an L.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's game one after a weird offseason, so I hope they can build from there.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Uh remember, these are these girls were ranked number one in Big 12 preseason.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: So I hope we can come back next week talking about how uh we put a dub on the board.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, soccer too, that's another sport that doesn't get talked about enough.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're supposed to be real good this year, so uh, you know, keep kicking butt, uh Lady Raiders.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Literally.
- 9:16SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe not physically into their butts, but yeah, but you know, the ball into goal.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: That's how soccer works.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: And that was yeah, it's a cool sport, really.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, beloved all across the world, not so much in the US, but you know, it's good.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: It's what it is.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: It's growing.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: Um, and then our second bit of news, uh, Jamarius Burton, the Wichita State transfer, uh received his immediate waiver to uh to play for the basketball team in 2020, which is awesome news.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's probably the most underrated transfer coming in for Chris Beard's team this year.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: Um, he, of course, is coming along with Marcus Santosilva, who is the grad transfer from VCU, and uh everybody's favorite Mac McClung, the human highlight reel.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: So Jamarius Burton received his waiver, McClung still hasn't, which is a little disappointing.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I'll get into that in a second.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: But uh cool to see uh uh Burton get his waiver.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: And uh I remember you always talking about Jamarius and how underrated he is.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Could you uh maybe elaborate to our listeners as to why you think that this kid is probably the best, one of the best transfers coming in that you think is just being completely overlooked?
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean he's uh you gotta look at his size.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: He's 6'4, he's a combo guard, so that's great size for for a guy that's gonna be a ball handler, uh guy on the perimeter.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: He's he's got truly got NBA size uh when you're looking at the guard position.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Um at Wichita State, he was relied on a lot.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: He was a starter there.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: 10.3 points per game, uh, three and a half rebounds, three assists a game.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: While shooting 44% from the field, and shooting 44% is awesome.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: That is a uh that's a great percentage to shoot.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: Um I haven't got a real chance to look at the highlights from him yet to see where he likes to play, but uh it seems like Beard loves him, and uh he's definitely getting the least amount of buzz of our of our grad transfers because McClung and Sano Silva are probably gonna be starters on next year's team.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: Uh I did see something where Burton is he may red shirt next year uh to try to get stronger, he said.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: So um I think a lot of that's gonna be depending on on Mac McClung and if he gets his waiver.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Um because that's I mean, that's starter minutes right there.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: And whenever we were talking about transfers and uh programs that they come from, Wichita State's a solid one.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's just that's that's a great program out of the heartland.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Uh one of the best in the American conference, no doubt.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: So uh the shockers always try to make a run in the tournament, so I'm very happy to see us getting players from there.
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: He's uh I mean Wichita State's kind of been down the last couple years, but I mean it's a it's a premier program in in the G5 for sure.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: Um and you know, just getting more of these guys, Chris Beard has really utilized this transfer portal.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, unbelievable the grad transfers that he's gotten the last few years.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: You're talking initially with you know the championship team uh with Tariq Owens and Matt Mooney, and then you know, coming in for last year, two of our main contributors, TJ Holyfield and Chris Clark, were also transfers.
- 12:22SPEAKER_04: So, you know, Chris Beard is getting guys in, and I'm not sure.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: I I'm not sure how the eligibility is gonna work, if it's gonna be kind of a wash year like it is for football this year, but uh we could possibly have a couple years out of these guys.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: Jamarius Burton, I think, will be on the roster for at least two or three more years.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: Um Mac McClung, it looks like he's he might be a one and done.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: San O Silva, this is gonna be his last year of eligibility.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: So uh we'll see how that rolls.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: But uh that was awesome news to see that he got his waiver.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Hey, I I I'm not 100%.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: I don't know if this applies to fall sports or not or the whole academic year.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but is 2020 slash 2021 uh the year the the seasons of COVID?
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Does this apply into every single sport that this one's a free pass?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: That these seasons are free passes?
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I'm not sure about that.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: I I don't know if it's uh I don't know if it applies to basketball.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: I I know that the fall sport, I think they said the fall sports like baseball or the uh spring sports like baseball, those guys could be eligible for another year because they didn't really get to play their season.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: Basketball was basically over by that.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: So, you know, guys that were in there last year.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, except for like NCAA tournaments, but the majority of the season was played, and so you know they were getting into postseason action, which stinks because that was, you know, everybody everybody felt uh missing the NCAA tournament last year.
- 13:44SPEAKER_04: That's stunned.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: But uh but um yeah, so we're not gonna get guys that were in their final year of eligibility last year, like Chris Clark and TJ Holyfield, those guys can't return.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Um and and another big, you know, another key point for this Burton uh waiver is we lost two huge guards from last year's team.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh Jamayus Ramsey to the NBA draft and uh Davide Moretti to uh to Europe.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: And uh we need to make up those minutes.
- 14:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, those guys were two of the leading scorers and two of the leading minute getters on last year's team.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, if if Burton does decide to play this year, he's he's probably gonna get a good amount of minutes right off the bat.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: No doubt, man.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Great news for Jamarius.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Uh so let's get into Mac.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: So obviously, he's probably the biggest uh buzz to come out of the transfer to Texas Tech this season, this offseason, I should say.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Um, why is it that we keep seeing uh these other players go ahead and get them waivers while Mac the Mackerel the Mackerel has not been able to grab that piece of paper yet?
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: What do you think is going on there?
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: He's you know the NCAA is so inconsistent with this stuff, man.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: It's it's disappointing and it's it's frustrating because they're giving guys waivers like nothing, like if you follow John Rosteen's one of my favorite followers on Twitter, and he's like one of one of his sayings is they're giving uh transfer waivers out like candy or whatever this year.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: I thought his only saying was uh Chris Beard fully loaded.
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: That's the that's his best saying.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: And best t-shirt.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Go grab that merch.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: Go grab that merch, John Rothstein.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: That was a great gift.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: Um but uh happy birthday to me.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, Mac McClung, he he kind of he was one of those players that was a YouTube sensation.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Nobody really thought he was gonna be, you know, amount to much.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: He was this 6'2 white kid coming in and could leap out of the freaking gym and you know do all these crazy dunks in high school.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: He ended up committing to Georgetown and kind of surprised a lot of people because he's his game is more uh more widespread than what a lot of people thought.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: They thought he was just this super athletic guy who couldn't really do much else but you know, drive to the rim and just be an athlete.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: But uh he's got a pretty decent three-point shot.
- 16:04SPEAKER_04: He he's improving.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Um, and he's you know, he's he's ended up being actually, you'll see in most of his gameplay, he's not like this big high-flying guy.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: He kind of sticks around the perimeter and plays smart, you know, makes his way into the lane uh with quick drives and stuff like that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, it's it's weird that he hasn't received his waiver.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: There's another guy transferring to Kentucky from uh Wake Forest who is is him and Mac McClung were like the biggest transfers probably on the market this year, and neither of them have received a waiver to play.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: And you have to imagine that's gonna come uh in the coming you know weeks or whatever.
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: But it looks like we got a college uh basketball start date of the November 25th, I believe they said.
- 16:45SPEAKER_04: So uh we have until then.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: And hopefully, you know, I I think uh everybody that's a Texas Tech fan will agree that it would be super, super disappointing to uh not see Mac get his waiver here pretty quickly.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: And especially with the way this this roster is stacking up.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Um it's it's so great, it's so fun to watch how each year develops under Chris Beard.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and the way this man could just take players from anywhere and turn them to stars under Tex Tech System uh is just so fun to watch.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: So it'd be shut such a shame to see a kid have to sit out because of uh not being just because of a piece of paper.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Um so I'm really uh we're all I'm sure we're all crossing our fingers.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: And kind of the same thing with Jamarius.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, Georgetown's also a solid program as well.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: So it's we're we're it's so cool to watch Texas Tech uh be attractive to players from the from this kind of caliber of of teams, you know, and especially when they're this sought out as well.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Like McClung picked us over picked us over some solid programs.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So it's it's so great to see Texas Tech rise in the ranks of of desirability, you know.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: And you just and you know how how much I like to harp on this is I love beating the crap out of the uh the stigma that oh you can't recruit the Lubbock, no one wants to play in Lubbock, you know, and it's just it's just not true.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and if you build if you build the program, they will come.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: So it's really showing out.
- 18:11SPEAKER_04: You put a good enough coach, you put a few good seasons together, you can recruit a lot of good players.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: And Beard, not just with the grad transfers, but with the regular high school guys coming out.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: I mean, Namari Burnett's coming into this year's team too, and he's he was a top 30 guy.
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: Micah Peavy's another big guy who who's uh coming out of high school, who's a top, I believe, top 60 or something recruit.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: And you know, Beard's getting these dudes, and he's really he's getting the right guys in the program too.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: Guys that you know have a good head on their shoulder, aren't gonna jack up, uh, you know, get arrested for speed racing.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: But um, no, I mean, you know, uh Chris Beard's doing a great job up there in Lubbock, and uh I'm excited to see this year's team.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: And it's it's always so fun listening to you talk about uh basketball.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: No one no one loves it like you, man.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Do you have any uh any any other any other thoughts on the uh Texas Tech Red Raider basketball team?
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: Well, and we'll get into a full preview once it gets to a little closer to basketball season, but I I'm just super excited for this year's team, man.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: We have a great combination of guys coming in, new new high school freshmen, some some grad transfers, a lot of key returners.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna be fun.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: I tell you what, this decade and uh starting in our uh our our student tenure, basketball has been a big place of relief for us.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: After coming off of really terrible football seasons, it was so great to be able to go to the USA and watch some competitive games, even if we weren't even if we weren't winning all the time like we are now.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: It was just so fun to watch us compete and even get some upsets and rush that court, uh, even in uh uh during tubs.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Um so it's it's it's so cool to uh uh have that place where red raiders can come back together after being sad.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Uh but we hope we're not sad this season.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not trying to say that's what it's gonna be, but uh it's just long season plus.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just no matter what, there's there's something uh it's something else to look forward to at the end of the fall season.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: Basketball season is always a fun season in Lubbock, it seems, every year.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: Uh everybody gets hyped up for it.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: So uh once it gets a little closer to that, we'll bring you some uh some you know in into it previews and uh roster discussions and uh you know the Big 12 and everything like that.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, look forward to that coming in uh probably October, November area.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: So well, we have a uh third topic of conversation before we get into our UT preview.
- 20:33SPEAKER_04: And uh why don't we just play the thing?
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: Michael Crabtree, wide receiver, 66.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: On behalf of the Bulletnikup family, we want to congratulate Michael Crabtree.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: I want to be the best.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: The best has to work every year, every month, every day, and every minute.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: The only part I remember about that is um you on the sideline with your mouth wide open, man.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Michael, I'm excited to tell you that the committee has selected you to be the next great Red Raider to go up in the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor and have your name forever affixed in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: Michael Crabtree has been inducted into the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Incredible stuff.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, and the one thing you you can always say about Texas Tech football is it's hard to think about the program of Texas Tech football without thinking about Michael Crabtree.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: He could be the single most famous player we've ever had on that football field.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: And to have him recognized in what is probably the most prestigious uh list on the entire sporting campus is well deserved, completely expected.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: And uh just I cannot wait to see them unveil his name on the Jones.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: That's going to be really cool.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: They're supposed to announce it at the UT game this week.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: I'm sure his name will go up there, I believe, in 2021, you saw.
- 22:09SPEAKER_04: So just an unbelievable honor for him.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Unbelievable honor for Texas Tech just to have him for his tenure here.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: He joins Donnie Anderson, EJ Holeb, Dave Parks, Zach Thomas, and Gay Rivera in the Ring of Honor.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: He's going to get his name up in the Jones.
- 22:25SPEAKER_04: Just an awesome, awesome deal uh to uh to add to this uh football season.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: No doubt, man.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: And uh I thought this was so cool.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Whenever I was uh checking the uh the article on it, is he said that uh in football the ultimate goal is to have your name on the stadium, and that's always been my goal throughout my career.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: So that just preaches to what the guy is, you know, and and what is uh what what he wants his legacy to be.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: And it's safe to say that his legacy is going to be forever solidified at Texas Tech University.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Um, he's gonna be the sixth member of this amazing squad of players you just mentioned.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: And uh he's holy cow, what a career this man has had and what a lasting impact he's he's left well after he's gone.
- 23:09SPEAKER_04: And I mean, man, I was looking back at his stats.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: Unbelievable.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, it just blows my mind every time how good this dude was.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: 2008, he finished fifth in uh Heisman voting with uh Graham Harrell, the quarterback at the time, of course, finishing fourth.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: Cool to have two guys in the top five.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: But Krab G, man, his freshman year, red shirt freshman, 13 games, 134 receptions, 1,900 yards, 22 touchdowns as a red shirt freshman.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it with those numbers.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm about to, you know, the things I'm about to list aren't even a surprise.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: A two-time Blitnikov winner, you know, of the nation's best wide receiver.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: And he got that as a red shirt freshman.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Are you kidding me?
- 23:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's he's insane, dude.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: He is he is what people think of when they think of Texas Tech football.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: They think of Crowd Tree's catch.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: They think of the famous, it's the most famous play in Texas Tech sports history.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: It's one of the most famous plays in all of college football.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Without.
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: He brought so much happiness to our to uh our fan base and our football program.
- 24:21SPEAKER_04: And uh man, it's great that he's being honored like this.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: And he he's always been proud of his roots, he's always been a proud Red Raider.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, he he's come back all uh several times since he's uh become a professional football player.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: And I remember when I was at the uh final four and in Minneapolis, he was at the game and they uh they gave him a big camera time there, and the whole stadium went crazy.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: Um and uh he's uh he's also a two-time All-American ananimous.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Um the man was just talents to behold.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: And uh pretty much all of our in-state rivals tried to recruit him, and he chose Texas Tech.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: He chose to uh play under the the wild mad scientist, Mike Leach, um, who may uh who may be the best uh head football coach we've ever had.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Um the way he put used Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree to put together what is the most legendary season of all in our entire history.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Um it's this is so cool to see happen.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Um and the thing to kind of talk about is uh the Ring of Honor has only been around since 2012.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: You know, this is a fairly new thing, and uh I it's it's really cool for them to really pick out the the players that left that really put their stamp and kind of gave left that expectation or um something to aspire to for the rest of our players coming out um into our program.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: And I it's I hope we have a new Michael Crabtree coming in soon, you know.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: And uh I I hope there's all these players coming in wanting to be that because I know he would want to be that too.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: So for sure.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: It's uh I mean there there might already be somebody who's gone through the program that's that's gonna be up there next.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, it could be his quarterback, you know.
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: Graham Harrell, probably probably up there for consideration.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Um, and then you know, we could we could even get into guys like you know, Patrick Mahomes, if he ends up doing what he if he ends up keeping doing what he's doing in the NFL.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's gonna be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and you have to put him up there.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: And then you could even talk about guys like Jakeem Grant, who have the has the most receiving yards in Texas Tech history.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, a four-year guy, unbelievable player, uh, during some, you know, not so great football years, but uh just an unbelievable guy to watch for the team.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: So uh I look forward to seeing who's who's up there next.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: But uh Crabtree will have his name uh up there in the Jones forever.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: These get me so hyped, and this has to be the the biggest one of all so far.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, Zach Thomas obviously super stud in the NFL and all that, but I mean, like like you're saying, that there's there's really if there you have to pick one player that everyone thinks of with Texas Tech football, it's it's Michael Crabtree.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: So it's an incredible honor.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: He also just got inducted into the Hall of Fame here 2020 in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame, I should say.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh his his stats speak for himself, y'all.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Uh 10th overall pick in uh in the 2009 draft.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Even got on the cover of a video game.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: He was on the cover of uh NCAA 2010 on the Xbox edition.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: So yeah, Texas Tech was on the the cover of the NCA football game because of him.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: And boy, uh if uh if there's one call out in all of Texas College sports is uh is Crabtree pulls free touchdown moders, just like in our intro.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: So uh something that'll live forever in the minds of our of our players and fans.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: And I hope that it's not the last time we can we have we can talk about something like that, you know.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: And I know it's not, but it's just an incredible thing to look back on.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, top 10, top 10 college football receiver of all time.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: Without question, it he may be top five.
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's up there with Randy Moss, he's up there with Calvin Johnson, he's up there with Jerry Rice and uh all those other guys that that you know were unbelievable talents, not only in college, but in the NFL.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: Michael Crabtree had a solid NFL career.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: Um, but his collegiate career, he's gotta be top 10.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: Easy.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Without question.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Nothing but love here on the talking tech pod for Michael Crabtree.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Um boy, I I wish we could have been there at the 2008 game, but we were just young little bucks.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh uh hey if hey Michael, if you're listening to this, we'd we'd love to have you on.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: You know, if if you're interested.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: Come on the podcast.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: Come on the podcast on the talking tech pod, baby.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: Come on up, come on, Michael.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: Come on down.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: Meet me on the zoom meeting, homie.
- 28:38SPEAKER_04: We'll tweet at you.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: Look at the tweet.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: We can have you in our intro, Michael.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man, but uh all in all, man, we're we're so proud of Michael Crowdtree, proud, proud uh of him that he was a red raider, um, and just an unbelievable talent.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: And always true to his roots, too.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: So uh moving on.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: This is the moment that you and me were maybe not waiting for, but it is the preview to the Texas Tech UT game this Saturday, 2 30 on Fox.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Come on now, Red Raiders, national television, red Raiders.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, let's go.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Oh man, let's go.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: It's it's I've been doing this dangerous thing where uh, you know, last week I was just like, oh god, this is not gonna be good.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: But you know, after every oh I just had to see one tweet from the Texas Tech Football account.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: It was like that awesome picture of them coming out of the tunnel saying, Game week, baby.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: I was like, game week, baby.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm trying to talk myself into a win as I always do.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: And um, it's uh I'm I'm I'm I'm just uh really trying to uh put it into my head of what needs to be done.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: And uh I I just here we are honoring Michael Crabtree, and I would like to see a little Michael Crabtree magic in the Jones because fun fact, okay.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: This this fun fact isn't fun.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: That that that magical catch was the last time we beat the Longhorns in Lubbock, which is a little embarrassing.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've beat them we've beaten them several times in Austin since then, but we haven't beaten them at home.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: I just I I hate that stat.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: It seems like we do better over there.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: We beat them with Nick Shimonek, and we beat we we won one year with Mahomes, right?
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:18SPEAKER_04: And that's that's wild to me.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: How did we win?
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: How did we win with Nick Shimonek?
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: How did we beat that team?
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: And that was well, that was one of those games where like Cliff just saved his job.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: I don't even think we won bowling.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: I think that was like our bowl and our heads.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: That was yeah, that was like their that was our fifth win of the year.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: That was the last game of the season.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was obviously that's expected whenever a uh a tech AD is hiring a Texas Tech football coach.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: It's uh you need to be Texas.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Um, because I mean it's it's the game that's it's it's the big one, guys.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I I'll say here I'll sit here and talk all day about how we do have a bunch of uh ongoing rivalries, but it's I know we're not their number one, and I it's but whenever whenever we're looking at a calendar, if if there's any game that's circled, it's it's Texas.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: It's the Longhorns, and I'm sure the players feel the same way.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Um they didn't get recruited by UT, or they might have and they might have picked tech, but you know, I mean it's it's um they kind of all have their chip on their shoulder against them, and uh I it's it's the big one for the fans, it's the big one for Lubbock, and I really you know last time we talked about this kind of preseason, how we're kind of excited to have UT first in Lubbock to start out the Big 12 season.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: I know that tune's kind of changed after this Houston Baptist game.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: How we're like, dang, I wish we had maybe had a little more time to fine-tune.
- 31:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Um but how do you still feel about maybe getting a surprise attack on the Longhorns?
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: Well, so a few things are gonna have to happen.
- 31:42SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously, UT in their sole win this year, they uh crushed UTEP um 59 to 3, I believe.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Uh Sam Ellinger, I mean, he was he's unbelievable.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: Uh 25 for 33, 426 yards and five touchdowns in in one half of football.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: So uh they're playing UTEP.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna pretend like this is some sort of accomplishment.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Uh UTEP is is two and one, but they've only they have wins against Stephen F.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: Austin and Abilene Christian, and those were two scrape-by wins.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: So um I just I just am I refuse to believe that we're as bad as we played two Saturdays ago.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: I just don't think that we're gonna show that same performance.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: And if we do, there's some serious problems.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: But I think that we're gonna bring it for UT.
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: We're gonna have some of this uh this pumped up action going on, everybody's hyped up.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: Uh but you know, we have to have a few things happen.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that's just you know, the keys to the game are really gonna have to get the run game going.
- 32:47SPEAKER_04: And so Roderick Thompson, thank goodness, as of right now, he's playing um after his whole incident.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: But uh him and Taj Brooks, I mean, they have to tire out that defense throughout the game.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: Uh by the time it comes to the fourth quarter, we're gonna have to have some drives that are 15, 17 plays, taking up seven minutes o'clock.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's a key to beating a better, a more talented team is to, you know, just tire them out.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, I I definitely have to agree with you there.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Um, I think kind of a uh something we could kind of look at in a positive way is we did get this, yeah, we scraped by Houston Baptist, but we got the first game out of the way.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Um, I think our players kind of broke in their cleats, you know.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Uh they get back on the football field and get into that season mindset.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: And the good news is I don't think the coaches need to do a lot to get the players hyped up and in the game for UT.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the game does it itself.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: I wish I could say that, you know, that's that's how it's you know that that's really helped us out.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: But we we just haven't been able to get it done against the Longhorns, but I just think it is a positive to uh to take in to kind of give us a little uh hope going to the game, so we just don't expect an L.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: Um, I think the players will be ready to go.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: And like you said, it's uh had Sir Roderick been suspended for this game, I think you and I would be going into this preview with a bit of a different attitude because I think we're gonna have to lean on him a ton to uh get us through this because I there's no as much as I'd like to say we're gonna wait we can blow the the longhorns out, I don't think that's gonna be the case.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: And all these past longhorn games, uh a lot of them have been pretty close.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not like they've just been throwing us out of the stadium each year.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Uh last year we we kept with them in the first half, but obviously kind of slipped away from us.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: But before that, it it really wasn't all that bad.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just we need that killer instinct.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: And I thought something we complain about.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Up here it comes, we're gonna mention Cliff Kingsbury, is he didn't have killer instinct.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: He could never close the game.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just hope that we can get over that hump finally, and it's gonna be a close one.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: So I hope we can get over that hump and have that killer instinct to close the game out.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Um, because it's gonna get tough.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: And I just I don't want our players to give up, even when we're down.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: I just they need to stay in it.
- 35:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they need to be mentally there.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: Uh they were not mentally there against Houston Baptist, and they let it get in their heads a little bit.
- 35:07SPEAKER_04: But honestly and truly, if Bowman hits that pass to Dalton Rigdon for a touchdown, we would have been up 28-3.
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: The game would have been over.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: It really would have.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, and the game, you know, the second half probably would have played out differently.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: But um I think you have to start this this key to the game sort of thing with talking about Bowman.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: He needs to be more accurate in this game.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, he missed some huge throws.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: He can't miss those throws against Texas.
- 35:34SPEAKER_04: You only get a certain amount of those a game, and he needs to, you know, lock in and and nail those uh long touchdown throws to try to get some points on the board early.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: Um Texas, they they want to they want to keep saying they're they're DBU, defensive back U.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: But uh they just really all in all, they really haven't been the last couple of years.
- 35:55SPEAKER_04: And they are there's some vulnerability there.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: Uh they have uh they're obviously they get some of the most talented guys every year, but uh I really think we can take advantage in the in the passing game, and uh it starts with Bowman.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: And this is gonna be uh Alan Bowman's very first game against the Longhorns.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Um and I I hope that the first game kind of got his bearings back because the the kid has obviously not been uh hasn't been able to play a lot of Texas Tech football because of his uh because of his injuries.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: So I'm hoping uh yeah, he wasn't exactly uh a superstar in the HBU game uh that could have put the game away, like we were just you're just talking about nailing those passes.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: But I I think getting over that first game is a big thing for a quarterback.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: Um so they kind of get back in that mindset because that's what that's like I said last episode, I think that's one of the positions that really needs to sink in.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think you could take just the first game where he's not exactly just nailing every pass and say he's not he's not this is how it's gonna be all season, because he he obviously just needs to uh get his bearings back together.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: And I think he will.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: And he's gonna need to step up as a leader, a mental leader, because even when we get down, which we probably will, um it's we we can't say it's over.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: You know, he needs to make sure he's he says he's gonna get back out there and just toss a dime, you know, and we're gonna get right back in it.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: And uh, I hope TJ Vasher kind of repeats his stellar games against CT in the past with his famous uh horns down fouls.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: That was great.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: That was worth it.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Worth it, always worth it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's I I want to see some pure quarterback wide receiver connection because that's what every team fears in our in a Texas Tech team.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: And I and that's what needs to happen if we're gonna take out the Longhorns.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously you want to wear them down with that running back game, but at the end of the day, if you want to dagger them, you need the daggers, which are the wide receivers, you know.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: And we have the talent to do it.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, Ezukama, TJ Vasher, Dalton Rigdon, and it looks like we're gonna have uh that's another thing that we haven't brought up.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: The the COVID results came back, uh, and it looks like nobody on the football team tested positive, no coach or player.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: So hopefully we get some of these guys that missed last week in here uh playing against the Longhorns, and we have some more weapons, you know.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, but Bowman's got to get everybody involved.
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: We have a lot of good receivers on this team, and uh, we have a lot of opportunity to take advantage on UT.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: Um, but I I I wanted to say as much as we need to get big yardage plays, we need to prevent big yardage plays.
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: We didn't do that against Houston Baptists.
- 38:23SPEAKER_04: We gave up two 65-yard touchdowns and one 75-yard touchdown.
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: Those are mental killers as much as they are uh just you know on-the-field killers, you know, points, points against you.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's they're such downers to give up those sort of plays.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: And I hope during this two week stint that we've uh we've done some uh maneuvering on that secondary.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really hope uh our receivers and uh cornerbacks have really been at each other's throats in practice uh these past two weeks.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: I hope they're really kicking each other's butts because God knows our backs really need to wake up.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: I hope it's that's all it is.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: I hope they all just need just just to wake up to the situation because they're the worst reason why we were so down um with all those big plays that kept uh Houston Baptist in the game.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: And UT will not be scared to throw a deep ball on us.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: It's a much better QBA with much better wide receivers.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: So this is a much more athletic squad.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: So if we if we want any chance of winning this game, our cornerbacks need to be ready.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Um it's we're we're probably gonna give up some big plays, but I don't want that to mentally defeat them.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: You know, like that's what I keep coming back to.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: We're probably gonna come down, we're probably gonna be down, but we can't lose in the mental game or else it's over.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: So it's I I really hope uh our coaches have really drawn up some place to take advantage of what we have and to make up for any sort of deficits we have against the Horns.
- 39:45SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: We don't want this to be over before it started.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: Um, so we should talk about some of Texas's players.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: Um uh last week it looks like Josh Moore and Tariq Black are gonna be their two big receivers.
- 39:58SPEAKER_04: Uh for Josh Moore, six receptions, 127 yards and a touchdown.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: Um and the receivers are are gonna be a problem, like always.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: Texas always gets these stud receivers.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, they had like six or seven different receivers, uh, average over 13 yards of reception last week.
- 40:17SPEAKER_04: It's UTEP, but you know, they have a lot of different weapons, uh, including Brendan Schooler, who is Colin Schooler's younger brother, uh transferring, I believe, from Oregon or Oregon State.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: He decided to transfer to Texas and he actually caught a touchdown last week.
- 40:33SPEAKER_04: So uh hopefully uh his brother will be playing for the Red Raiders and uh, you know, maybe come up with a thing or two to stop his stop that offense.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: I that that's whenever you talk about the COVID missing guys, I wanted to uh to talk about hopefully we get to see these new uh Red Raider defensive pieces that were missing in the last game that we were begging to see, like uh like Schooler.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Like we were I think Schooler was the guy we wanted to see the most.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: We really wanted to see that guy get out there and see how he could terrorize an offense.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: And I think uh we're really hoping he's gonna be out there for the longhorn game because God knows we need him.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Because if he can if he can if he can disrupt that longhorn offense, we have a chance.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: So we need all that we need all the help we can get.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: And another guy, I think, that that is coming back.
- 41:19SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he was out from COVID, but I know he received his waiver to play immediately, and that's Tyree Wilson, the AM transfer on the D-line.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: And that's another huge piece that we need.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: I mean, more defensive line guys to get some sort of pressure on Sam Ellinger.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: We did not pressure uh Bailey Zappe last week or two weeks ago with uh Houston Baptist, and we need to get to Ellinger.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: We can't give him time.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, we need to do some more blitzes, some more four-man rushes, just something to get Ellinger maybe off his groove a little bit.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, this this kid is a is a Heisman favorite.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: Uh it's he's he's he's been in the system for years now.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: So he he knows what he's doing.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: This is no, he's he's faced Texas Tech before.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: Um, we're not a new team to him, and uh the offensive scheme is not new to him at all.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: So I really hope we can get some new players in there that really throw him off his groove.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Um it's uh it's the best we can hope for um because I don't think we'll be able to stop them completely.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think we'll be able to shut down Longhorn offense.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: I think they'll be putting a lot of yards on us, but uh we don't it's with Texas Tech defense, we we don't need to expect um an absolute shutdown defensive game to win.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: We just need to slow them down enough.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: So we haven't been able to see that because that's why we always lose.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: It's not for a lack of scoring, it's for a lack of not slowing them down enough.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: So I really hope that uh uh this this new defensive unit can really slow down the Longhorn offense because uh it's obviously goal number one, I would say, overall.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it looks like turnovers are gonna be a huge key to this game.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: Uh hopefully getting one or two picks or maybe maybe a couple fumbles here or there, but uh you know, we'll see what happens.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: Uh the the Texas run game wasn't utilized very much uh in the UTEP game.
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: Uh and it probably wasn't really needed, but uh they still had 208 rushing yards at a 6.3 yard average, but no none of their guys kind of you know really took off.
- 43:15SPEAKER_04: I saw that they they do a lot of wide receiver run plays, kind of end arounds or whatever.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: Uh they had a couple of those that gained some huge yardage against UTEP, so we may want to watch out for that.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: But uh looks like the running backs to look out for Keontae Johnson and Rashawn Johnson, uh looks like the the the two guys for UT to watch out for uh in the backfield.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, and that's that's that's some that's a bit of a comforting news too, though, uh, because we we did a pretty good job of holding down uh Houston Baptist's running game.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Uh it doesn't look like Houston Baptist, like you were just saying, it doesn't look like Houston Baptist really utilizes a running game as strong as their passing game.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: But if uh if we can hold them at the line, I mean that's just another positive to keep them from the from the end zone.
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: Um so that's that's I mean.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: We'll take all the good news we can get there.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: So uh hopefully and we gotta look and hopefully Merriweather can come up with uh with a big twelve Big 12 defensive player of the week this past week.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: I hope he can come up get up for this game and and put together another uh award-winning game.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: And that was Keontae Ingram.
- 44:16SPEAKER_04: I apologize on that running back.
- 44:18SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, we we need that linebacking core to do what they did last week, get uh get Boyer Randall in there, hopefully get Schooler in there, uh, and then Merriweather keep doing what he's doing.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: Uh Rico Jeffers needs to be involved.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: Uh let's get some let's get some blitzes, let's get some guys to Ellingard.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: Let's get some of those scary, scary dudes out there to try to try to get a few sacks or get some uh get some bat downs.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, we and linebacking core, I'm not, I'm not super worried about it.
- 44:45SPEAKER_04: It's really that secondary.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: It sounds like that you kind of want to go uh go for a high risk, high reward defense this game, huh?
- 44:52SPEAKER_04: It looks like it because it's it's gonna be tough, uh, especially watching that game last week, uh, that Texas UTEP game.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: But uh you know, it's it's just gonna depend.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: Uh we have we need to get some some I think the key for the defense is getting to Ellinger uh and making him uh you know flustered early and try to get uh try to get some uh some turnovers off of him.
- 45:15SPEAKER_04: But with the secondary man, the way they played last week, uh it's just gonna be, you know, uh hope that they can that they can maybe grab an interception or two, maybe Ellinger overthrows or something like that.
- 45:26SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, hopefully we do get Demarcus Fields back, hopefully.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: It looks like he's free of COVID.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, so he'll be another guy to add to that backfield.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, and maybe we won't have to play the less experienced guys very much.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: But uh my boy, my boy Zach McPherson gotta do better.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: You know, I really hope after the the Matt Wells uh post-game, he I hope he went into that locker room or the in the practice next week going, all right, you quarterbacks get the heck over here.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Let's talk.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: You know, so I really I really hope the uh the coaches brought some brought some intensity because I really hope they showed them you know how poorly they were playing.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Because I'm sure the players want to do better too.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: I'm sure they were not happy with how they did.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: And um the only way to go go from there is up, and I just I I hope we can expect a better performance out of it because this has been the the rhyme and rees story and reason story for Texas Tech for years now.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah and say we always get killed on those big plays, and those uh our secondary has always been uh something to worry about.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: And I think we're all just really tired of it.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:31SPEAKER_04: Um now I I should clarify, I don't expect us to win against UT.
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: I don't think a lot of people do, but uh what I want to see most is a good is at least a showing, you know, at least something that shows uh that there's room for improvement, that we're not gonna, you know, do we did two weeks ago.
- 46:50SPEAKER_04: We're gonna play UT well, we're gonna get our heads in right, and we're gonna show the longhorns that we're just not gonna be a pushover.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't want to be a pushover.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: I don't want to see this thing be over in the first quarter.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: Uh and you know, I was listening to I was listening to a few UT podcasts uh on my on my drive home from Baton Rouge, and uh it's some guy predicted they were they were gonna win 66 to 3.
- 47:13SPEAKER_04: I was like, I was like, okay, guys, slow, slow, slow down for a second.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: Worse than UTEP.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was like, I know that we're we didn't show anything we didn't show a lot of good against uh Houston Baptists, but 66 to 3 in the Jones, come on now, take it easy, relax.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure, man.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: Um, it's this is definitely one team we all want to beat so badly for that reason.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, but yeah, probably what is the most arrogant fan base in uh in the Big 12.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, if any with Longhorns are listening to this, I mean I don't mean that in the most disrespectful way.
- 47:48SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm sure you would admit it as well.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: Um, it's it's a bit of an entitled bunch.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: They expect a lot out of the program, which is fine.
- 47:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh it I tell you what, if there's one team that the Longhorns hate seeing them lose to, it's the Red Raiders out of Texas.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: They they can't stand that.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: I I would say I would bargain to say they hate that more than losing the OU.
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: I don't know about that.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: I uh they take that OU game pretty seriously.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: They do, but I think it's got but I'm sure they go into that game with the expectation that's 50-50 most of the time.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: They go into the expectation they're think they're gonna beat us.
- 48:24SPEAKER_04: It's a disrespect, it's a disrespect.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: I mean when when they when they go and play Texas, they just they just don't give us the respect, and we don't necessarily deserve the same respect as OU, but also they just don't respect us at all.
- 48:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's just what that's just what it is with UT fans.
- 48:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they don't consider us a rivalry and all that, you know.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: No, whatever, whatever.
- 48:42SPEAKER_04: We're all Texas teams, we all hate each other.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Hey, and this is uh one thing to mention, and uh I it's I don't think it's it's it's kind of something to put a respect on.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Is this the last large Texas state school game?
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: This is the last uh Texas state school rivalry there is um with A and M out of the conference.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: Uh Tech and UT are the last ones that keep that tradition alive.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: And I think that's something to appreciate when we go into Saturday as well.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: That uh, you know, these two big fan bases that absolutely hate each other, um, but are still Texas uh statements at the same time.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: But um that's it's just we I always think about it.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: We can all team up against the private schools.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: We don't like that.
- 49:22SPEAKER_04: We we all don't like Baylor and TCU, but I they hardly count.
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: They hardly count, whatever.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: The private schools private schools.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: Uh but uh yeah, UT's the biggest game of the year.
- 49:34SPEAKER_04: I hope our guys come come ready and prepared.
- 49:37SPEAKER_04: Uh I'm not expecting a win, like I said, but I am expecting a game.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Well, yep, uh the the spread opens up at 16 to 18, depending on where you're looking.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: Um it's it's not that's not great to see out of Vegas.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's fair.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: I would have thought it'd actually be higher.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: I thought I thought it was gonna be in the 20s, to be honest with you.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: Same after after both of our performances two weeks ago.
- 49:57SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, you never know.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: Vegas, Vegas maybe got a little uh a little hype on the Red Raiders.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: It's still 16-18, but it's better than I thought.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh our spread against HPU was insane.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: So I mean uh the Vegas definitely appreciates our offense.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: You can always see that whenever you're looking at spreads.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Um but it's it's this is this is the the biggest game of the year for us.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: I hope our guys get their mind right.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: Um I I I know it's it's a W isn't looking great on paper, um, nor from the eyesight test.
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: But obviously, every weekend I like to believe there's a chance.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm gonna go in and I'm gonna either be really happy or really disappointed, but that's kind of the name of the game.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: For sure, for sure.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: So UT, that is uh 2 30 on Fox on Saturday prime time.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: So uh let's not get out there and get embarrassed and let's uh let's let's play UT well.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: Fox National Television.
- 50:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: Um, so we did not get a mailbag question, but uh we decided to do a little something different.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: We're gonna do a uh a question for the audience, and we want y'all to uh interact with us, whether it's over email, whether it's over Twitter.
- 51:08SPEAKER_04: Um we were just wondering, you know, who do y'all think should be the next on the Ring of Honor?
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously with Michael Crowtree coming in.
- 51:15SPEAKER_04: We mentioned a few earlier, Graham Harrell, Patrick Mahomes, Jakeem Grant.
- 51:19SPEAKER_04: You know, what do y'all's opinions?
- 51:20SPEAKER_04: Do y'all think uh, you know, did we get enough wins during their tenure to be eligible for it?
- 51:26SPEAKER_04: Does professional career matter when you're talking about you know getting into the Texas Tech Ring of Honor?
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: Does Graham Harrell belong?
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: What about you know, some other big time quarterbacks?
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: Maybe it's uh, you know, is it just gonna be somebody in the in the future?
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: Uh but yeah, let us know.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: You know, we uh you can let us know on our Gmail, which is uh talking techpod at gmail.com, or you can uh you know reach out to either of us on Twitter.
- 51:52SPEAKER_04: Uh Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 51:57SPEAKER_04: Uh the pod's also on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 51:59SPEAKER_04: So uh give us a shout out, give us a give us a reach out and uh let us know what you think about um who who should be next on the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Steve and I think this is such a fun conversation.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: I feel like we have this conversation all the time, especially where we're sitting in the Jones looking up at those nine names on the wall of who else should be up there.
- 52:16SPEAKER_02: You know, should Wes Welker be up there?
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah, yeah.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: And and players like that.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: So hey, y'all, hit it, hit us up, let us know who you think, and we'll talk about it next on the pod.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: Especially like say if you're an older listener, we'd love to hear about some of the older players too.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, Steven and I were just we're young guys, so uh we we can't take into uh consideration too much of guys that were before us, so we'd love to hear it from you old timers.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: I have an embarrassing uh moment.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: It is probably the the bottom of the bottom for me.
- 52:45SPEAKER_04: But in 2008, I was a UT fan.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: Steven, and I was upset.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: I remember being upset at the crab tree catch.
- 52:54unknown: My god.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: I know, I know you've done a full 180 on that though.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: That game hocks you up.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, dude, I I've rewatched it at least once a year.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Like you're obviously you're obviously not a real tech fan.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: It's not like you've been a tech pot or anything like that.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: So yeah, no, I'm I mean, my dad went to UTSA, so we were kind of growing up going to UT games, but that immediately changed as soon as I decided to go to Texas Tech.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, that was a that's a it's a small thing that still eats at me to this day.
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, yeah, I love it now.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: Love it now.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: I didn't give a crap about sports back then, man.
- 53:29SPEAKER_02: I just I just cared about uh uh video games and cartoons.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: So nice, nice 12 years old.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: So those were the good days.
- 53:36SPEAKER_03: They were you know, no worries in the world, you just had to go to school.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it wasn't until my older brother Austin McGonagall transferred to Texas Tech whenever I became a hardcore Red Raider fan back in 2011.
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Shout out to Austin.
- 53:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you uh you actually brought me to my to the first ever tech game I went to, which was uh happened to be one of the best uh tech games probably in in the last, you know, definitely in the last 20 years.
- 54:00SPEAKER_04: Um the uh West Virginia game in 2012, I believe.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, top five West Virginia, right?
- 54:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, upset them.
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: That was cool.
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: That was the first ever game I saw in Loving.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, inaugural game, I think, too.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: Wasn't it the inaugural West Virginia game?
- 54:12SPEAKER_04: Uh I it may have been.
- 54:13SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure.
- 54:14SPEAKER_04: I think it was.
- 54:14SPEAKER_04: I just uh yeah, I just remember uh beating them down, Jay Samaro.
- 54:18SPEAKER_04: Uh that was that was a great game to be at.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: It was rushed the field and everything.
- 54:22SPEAKER_04: Well sure.
- 54:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:24SPEAKER_04: But uh Tristan, why don't we end up uh why don't we end the pod on your song of the week?
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: So uh for my song of the week, I'm gonna keep it light and short.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: Uh I thought it'd be kind of fun to uh talk about a game that mentions UT.
- 54:37SPEAKER_02: Um so last last week I said talked about Wade Bowen, uh proud Red Raider.
- 54:42SPEAKER_02: Um he he and Randy Rogers had this uh super duo Texas country group called uh they kind of call themselves Hold My Beer, but they can just they just go by uh Randy Rogers and Wade Bowen.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: Um but on Hold My Beer volume two, there's this song with a very creative title called Hold My Beer.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Um right, yeah.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: And uh it the song opens up about they're obviously reminiscing reminiscing about their their times together out uh performing, and they talk about their time in Austin, Texas when they got into a fist fight with a uh Longhorn quarterback.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: So it's great hearing about a red raider really go up at it with a longhorn.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: It's a such a fun song, great drinking song, great game day song.
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: It's called Hold My Beer.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: It's a jam out.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: It's uh just one of those classic marquee drinking country songs at the end of the day, but it's just very Texas to the bone, and I thought it'd be kind of fun because it's uh it mentions the longhorns.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: Let me show you how it's done.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: We're gonna need some of that ferocity in the Texas game this week.
- 55:54SPEAKER_04: So uh that's awesome.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: What about you, man?

- 56:08SPEAKER_04: I want to see one thing that makes me truly believe in this team.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, the song itself is awesome, it's it's a it's a smooth jam.
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: Um, it it's not really uh the song doesn't talk about what what I wanted to talk about when I'm talking about beating Texas, but uh uh she's talking about uh I think a relationship or something like that.
- 56:25SPEAKER_04: But Tracy Chapman, of course, everybody knows her song Fast Car.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh give me one reason, another good jam by her.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: So that is uh my song of the week.

- 56:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I'll have to give that one a listen, just like uh your past ones that I've had to heard.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: So um great great choice, man.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Um, always loved ending the episode with that.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: And uh, you have any closing thoughts about uh the big one?
