Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Orioles & Giants slipping, Bloom rebuilding Cards, Remembering the great John Sterling
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. We begin
- 0:04Speaker 1: this show on a solemn note. News this morning, John Sterling,
- 0:08Speaker 1: the legendary Yankees radio play by play man, passed away
- 0:12Speaker 1: this morning, age eighty seven. John Sterling. If you didn't
- 0:16Speaker 1: know who he was, and you probably did, just play
- 0:18Speaker 1: his signature calls. He was the Yankees radio voice for
- 0:22Speaker 1: thirty six years. He called at one point five thousand
- 0:27Speaker 1: and sixty consecutive games, not including two hundred and eleven
- 0:31Speaker 1: postseason games, and to put that in perspective, that's twice
- 0:35Speaker 1: as long, or nearly twice as long as Cal Ripkens
- 0:38Speaker 1: consecutive game streak. He was an absolute legend. He was
- 0:41Speaker 1: known for his home run calls, which bordered on ridiculous
- 0:45Speaker 1: at times. But there was one of a kind, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: John was one of a kind. And my earliest memories
- 0:51Speaker 1: of him were growing up on Long Island as an
- 0:54Speaker 1: Islanders and Nets fan. He was the announcer on radio
- 0:59Speaker 1: and for both those teams, Radio for sure, and his
- 1:04Speaker 1: signature call for an Islander goal was simply Islander goal,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Island the goal, I can't do it in his voice,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and my dad was a Ranger fan. He hated the Islanders,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and he would say, who is that guy? He's ridiculous.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Well, that guy was on the air for five decades.
- 1:20Speaker 2: That guy crafted a signature career. John Sterling rest in peace.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Now, the baseball world, we've got a ton to talk about,
- 1:29Speaker 1: literally a ton. Pirates sweep the Reds after getting swept
- 1:33Speaker 1: by the Cardinals, the Rays sweep the Giants. We'll get
- 1:36Speaker 1: to the Giants, but I want to start off with
- 1:38Speaker 1: another team in the AL East, one that has been well,
- 1:43Speaker 1: has lost three of its first four games to the
- 1:45Speaker 1: New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, A team that many
- 1:48Speaker 1: of us thought was positioned to take a step forward,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and they have not, at least to this point. That
- 1:54Speaker 1: team is the Baltimore Orioles. And the Baltimore Orioles they're
- 1:58Speaker 1: fifteen to nineteen right now. Now, they're already eight games
- 2:01Speaker 1: behind the Yankees, eight games in the AL East.
- 2:04Speaker 2: After spending all.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The money that they did in the offseason in their offense,
- 2:09Speaker 1: while it's missing the second baseman Holiday and the third
- 2:14Speaker 1: baseman Jordan Westberg, offense is twelfth in the league in
- 2:17Speaker 1: runs per game, and that's with Alonso not doing all
- 2:20Speaker 1: that much just yet.
- 2:21Speaker 2: He's heating up now.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Their offense has been okay, maybe not as good as
- 2:24Speaker 1: we thought, but good enough.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Again, with this team, it's the rotation.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It was the rotation that was the demise of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: twenty twenty five Oriols, and it's the rotation that is a.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Problem right now.
- 2:37Speaker 1: If you remember, the Orioles did not sign Dylan Ceas
- 2:40Speaker 1: or from ber Valdez, so the two perhaps top starting
- 2:44Speaker 1: pitching free agents. Instead, they brought in Zach Efflin, who
- 2:48Speaker 1: immediately underwent Tommy John surgery out for the season, Chris Bassett,
- 2:52Speaker 1: another free agent, and they traded for Shane Boz. They thought,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and I didn't think it was an unreasonable thought by
- 3:00Speaker 1: but it was a little bit of a gamble for sure.
- 3:02Speaker 1: That with Trevor Rodgers coming off a great season and
- 3:05Speaker 1: Kyle Bradish first full season coming off Tommy John surgery,
- 3:08Speaker 1: they thought they'd be okay.
- 3:10Speaker 2: They're not okay.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Rogers started off great, struggled, Bradish struggled really the whole season,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and they're kind of a mess right now. So the
- 3:20Speaker 1: Orioles a team that we all thought would be maybe
- 3:23Speaker 1: a contending club and still might be to this point,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and this Yankee series has shown it. They are outclassed.
- 3:30Speaker 2: They are not in their league.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yankees' news over the weekend as well, Anthony Volpi, this
- 3:35Speaker 1: was to me an obvious move gets optioned to Triple
- 3:38Speaker 1: A rather than reinstated to the major league club.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Jose Caballero has simply played too well. The Yankees have
- 3:45Speaker 2: simply played too well.
- 3:46Speaker 1: They'll need Vulpi, I would imagine at some point, but
- 3:50Speaker 1: not just yet. Another team I want to talk about,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and this was a team that was swept over the
- 3:55Speaker 1: weekend by an Als East club, the Tampa Bay Rays,
- 3:59Speaker 1: who are in the middle of a great run sixteen
- 4:01Speaker 1: of twenty one. That team is the San Francisco Giants,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and this team is a mess right now, an absolute mess.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The Giants are coming off an zero to six trip
- 4:12Speaker 1: to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. As we mentioned, they were
- 4:15Speaker 1: outscored twenty six to nine on that trip. They were
- 4:19Speaker 1: shut out three times, they were walked off three times.
- 4:22Speaker 1: They are a team that has right now a walk
- 4:26Speaker 1: rate of five point six percent, lowest in.
- 4:28Speaker 2: The majors historically low. In fact, they are a team
- 4:32Speaker 2: also not only do they not walk, they don't hit
- 4:35Speaker 2: home runs. They don't really do much of anything. They're
- 4:38Speaker 2: last in the majors with nineteen homers. Keep in mind
- 4:41Speaker 2: Judge and Murakami have thirteen each. And this is a
- 4:44Speaker 2: team that is calling up two prospects for tonight's game,
- 4:49Speaker 2: Jeseus Rodriguez and more importantly, Bryce Eldridge, a first base prospect,
- 4:53Speaker 2: one of the better prospects in the game, a power guy.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And yet even that is.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Problematic because this will take Casey Schmidt out of seemingly
- 5:02Speaker 1: a full time role.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Casey Schmid has been a guy enjoying so far a
- 5:07Speaker 2: breakout season, and yet now with Eldridge, a first base
- 5:11Speaker 2: DH type coming up, there's not an obvious spot for
- 5:14Speaker 2: him in that infield, an infield that includes the struggling
- 5:18Speaker 2: Raphael Devers the struggling William Damas. Those are the two
- 5:21Speaker 2: guys with the most expensive contracts in San Francisco Giants' history.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Matt Chapman, also the big contract, hasn't been much better.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Their bullpen has been a little bit disappointing. At the
- 5:34Speaker 2: back end, I would say, the closer role, and this
- 5:36Speaker 2: is a team that with the new manager Tony Vytello,
- 5:39Speaker 2: has been an extreme disappointment to this point of the season.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So you can see with Susan Slester tweets right there,
- 5:46Speaker 2: there's a quote, we literally have nothing to show for
- 5:49Speaker 2: this road trip. You end the day searching for any positives.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So the next quote there or next tweet refers to
- 5:58Speaker 1: a possible shakeup. Well, that's the shap that they announced
- 6:01Speaker 1: last night. Bryce Eldridge coming to the majors, Hiss Rodriguez
- 6:06Speaker 1: more of a utility guy coming to the majors as well.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I don't see a way out for this club unless
- 6:11Speaker 1: Devers starts going nuts and he looks like the guy
- 6:15Speaker 1: he looked like at times with the Red Sox when
- 6:17Speaker 1: he was overmatched by fastballs. He needs to get going,
- 6:20Speaker 1: Adamis needs to get going. And they're bringing up Bryce
- 6:23Speaker 1: Eldridge at a time when you do not want to
- 6:26Speaker 1: bring up a prospect, at a time when he almost
- 6:29Speaker 1: has to play something of.
- 6:30Speaker 2: A savior's role.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So those are the giants not good by any stretch
- 6:35Speaker 1: of the imagination. And the other thing I want to
- 6:37Speaker 1: go into before we move on to the next segment
- 6:40Speaker 1: of our show, some big injuries this weekend. Ronald Acuna
- 6:45Speaker 1: Junior of the Atlanta Braves twenty three game on bass
- 6:48Speaker 1: Streak out now on the injured list with what they're
- 6:51Speaker 1: calling a Grade one left hamstring strain. That is the
- 6:55Speaker 1: mildest they expect. He won't be out long. They always
- 6:58Speaker 1: expect that.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Let's see how long Ronald Cuny Junior is out, Hopefully
- 7:02Speaker 2: not too many games missed. Joe Ryan Minnesota Twins. Now,
- 7:06Speaker 2: this seems another mess. But the Twins. The one thing
- 7:10Speaker 2: they had going for them, at least in the early
- 7:12Speaker 2: part of the season, even without Pablo Lopez, who was
- 7:15Speaker 2: out for the year, was a rotation that looked decent.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Joe Ryan now has the elbow issue. Mick Abel is
- 7:22Speaker 2: a guy that was pretty good early on. He's out
- 7:24Speaker 2: with elbow inflammation. They don't think that's a big deal either. Again,
- 7:28Speaker 2: teams never say it's a big deal until it's a
- 7:30Speaker 2: big deal. But something of a concern there. The Red Sox,
- 7:34Speaker 2: we're gonna get to them. They've already got Garrett Crochet
- 7:37Speaker 2: and Sonny Graham the injured list. Ranger Suarez yesterday lost
- 7:41Speaker 2: only four innings before leaving with right hamstring tightness. This too,
- 7:46Speaker 2: sounds like it's not going to be a big deal.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez has dealt with this before and it has
- 7:51Speaker 1: not kept him out too long, so I would say
- 7:53Speaker 1: this one is not alarming. But the last one I'm
- 7:55Speaker 1: going to mention is at least concerning, and that's for
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Now cal Raley has missed the last two games.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We've been out of the line of two straight days
- 8:05Speaker 1: with right side discomfort. He went for an MRI. They
- 8:08Speaker 1: are awaiting the results. The Mariners so far have been
- 8:13Speaker 1: at disappointment. Let's face it. They're below five hundred, I believe,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and this is kind of what they do every year.
- 8:18Speaker 1: They're not good until they're good. But without Raleigh that
- 8:22Speaker 1: would be obviously a significant blow. So the initial diagnosis,
- 8:27Speaker 1: as Ryan Devish said, there was general sorens but they
- 8:30Speaker 1: later explained that it's been right side discomfort. Sounds like
- 8:34Speaker 1: an oblique type thing, which for a switch hitting catcher
- 8:37Speaker 1: would obviously be a problem, but we wait to see
- 8:40Speaker 1: exactly how serious that is.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So again, a lot to go through there. But the
- 8:46Speaker 2: big news of the day so far the.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Passing of John Sterling, and again we all will miss
- 8:51Speaker 1: him so much. He hasn't really been a part of
- 8:52Speaker 1: the Yankees broadcast of Lady of course was eighty seven.
- 8:56Speaker 2: He was ill. But for people of a certain age
- 9:00Speaker 2: and for Yankee fans everywhere, John Sterling was a monumental.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Figure in club history. So John again, rip, We love
- 9:09Speaker 1: you man. We'll be back with the inside dish after this.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You know, we don't always have to do things because
- 9:15Speaker 3: that's how it's always been.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Look, people consider me old school, and I thought I was,
- 9:20Speaker 4: but then we had the pitch clock and the abs
- 9:22Speaker 4: and ban on shifts and all these things that we've
- 9:24Speaker 4: had for a long time in baseball. And you know what,
- 9:27Speaker 4: much like mitt Mobile and the other mobile carriers, I'm
- 9:29Speaker 4: here for the new school and the changes that have
- 9:31Speaker 4: been made.
- 9:32Speaker 3: It's a good call. You can ditch over priced wireless.
- 9:35Speaker 3: You don't have to say, oh, I'm paying that, because
- 9:37Speaker 3: that's how it's always been. Get three months of premium
- 9:41Speaker 3: wireless service for mint Mobile for fifteen bucks a month.
- 9:43Speaker 3: All plans come with high speed data and unlimited talking
- 9:46Speaker 3: and text delivered on the nation's largest five G network.
- 9:49Speaker 3: If you like your money, mint Mobile is for you.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Shot plans at mintmobile dot com slash territory. That's mintmobile
- 9:56Speaker 3: dot com slash territory. Upfront payment for forty five dollars
- 9:59Speaker 3: for three months. Five gigabyte plan required equivalent to fifteen
- 10:02Speaker 3: bucks a month. New customer offer for first three months only,
- 10:06Speaker 3: then full price plan options available, taxes and fees extra
- 10:10Speaker 3: cement mobile for details get after at FTFAM.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Time.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Now for the inside ditch, the part of the show
- 10:23Speaker 1: where I talk about a story I've written, a trend
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the game, or perhaps as I will talk about today,
- 10:29Speaker 1: a figure in.
- 10:29Speaker 2: The game who was down and now he.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Is reviving his career in a big way in Saint Louis,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and I'm talking about Heim Bloom, formerly of the Red
- 10:40Speaker 1: Sox where he was the chief baseball officer, now the
- 10:43Speaker 1: Cardinals president of Baseball Operations, and the Red Sox, well,
- 10:47Speaker 1: they're in their usual turmoil since the change in managers.
- 10:50Speaker 1: There three and four change in managers and hitting coaches.
- 10:53Speaker 1: They're averaging two point six runs per game. They've lost
- 10:56Speaker 1: four of their last five with these new hitting coaches
- 10:59Speaker 1: and manager, and in those five games they scored only
- 11:03Speaker 1: eight runs. Wilson Contrera's had some quotes yesterday about how
- 11:07Speaker 1: the young players aren't maybe doing what they should, how
- 11:10Speaker 1: the team is.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Looser with al Alex Cora et cetera, et cetera. It's
- 11:13Speaker 2: Red Sox Drama one oh one. Not long ago. Hein
- 11:18Speaker 2: Bloom was a central figure in Red Sox drama and
- 11:22Speaker 2: a figure who a lot of fans had big problems
- 11:25Speaker 2: with and ultimately ownership had problems with as well. They
- 11:28Speaker 2: fired him.
- 11:29Speaker 1: They fired him after less than four years on the job.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He is now with Saint Louis. Saint Louis a rebuilding team.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Is twenty and fourteen. They're tied for second in the
- 11:39Speaker 1: NL Central, two games behind the Cubs. This after trading
- 11:43Speaker 1: Wilson Contreras, Noan Arnado, Sonny Gray, and Brendan Donovan. This
- 11:48Speaker 1: is a team that finally is building again around young talent.
- 11:53Speaker 1: They've got a clear mandate, a clear direction, and heim
- 11:57Speaker 1: Bloom is the architect of what they are going forward.
- 12:01Speaker 1: So let's look back a little bit on his Boston days,
- 12:05Speaker 1: because he didn't always have a clear direction and mandate
- 12:09Speaker 1: at times there and ultimately what they were asking him
- 12:12Speaker 1: to do was to restock the farm system, reset the
- 12:15Speaker 1: luxury tax penalties.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Do all of that.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And then after the twenty twenty one season, which was
- 12:21Speaker 1: a surprise, Red Sox go to the Alcs, suddenly it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Was whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 12:27Speaker 1: We've got a win now. And it's hard to do
- 12:29Speaker 1: both things at once.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Teams do it.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The Dodgers obviously develop and win at the same time,
- 12:34Speaker 1: but it's a difficult thing. And yes, Hein Bloom had
- 12:38Speaker 1: his missteps as the Red Sox head of baseball operations.
- 12:42Speaker 1: People will talk about the Mookie Bets trade forever. That
- 12:45Speaker 1: was an ownership driven trade. He did his best there.
- 12:48Speaker 2: There was not much he could do.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Obviously, the Yashida signing looking back, not great. Trevor's story
- 12:53Speaker 1: signing not great. Some other things had happened as well
- 12:57Speaker 1: that you can question, from bringing back Jackie braw to
- 13:01Speaker 1: extending Matt Barnes, signing Corey Kolub.
- 13:03Speaker 2: But we can go on and on.
- 13:05Speaker 1: A lot of moves didn't work out. But looking back,
- 13:08Speaker 1: a lot did work out for Heiin Bloom in Boston
- 13:12Speaker 1: and it's working out in Saint Louis as well. What
- 13:14Speaker 1: worked out the drafts and going back, yes, they had
- 13:19Speaker 1: Marcella Meyer, he was a number four pick overall, and
- 13:23Speaker 1: Kyle Teel one of the figures who went for Garrett Crochet.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He was a top fifteen pick overall. You could say
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's easy to hit on those guys, though no team
- 13:32Speaker 1: always does. But they also had some successes in the
- 13:36Speaker 1: later rounds. Roman Anthony was a second round pick. Christian
- 13:39Speaker 1: Campbell his career is not yet over. He was a
- 13:41Speaker 1: fourth round pick. Conner Lee Early, a guy who is
- 13:44Speaker 1: going to be a fixture in the rotation a fifth rounder.
- 13:47Speaker 1: The system went from a bottom ten system to a
- 13:50Speaker 1: topsen ten system, and heim Bloom also traded for William
- 13:54Speaker 1: Orbreu in what at the time was kind of a
- 13:57Speaker 1: controversial deal. They were shipping out Ramon vass Case and
- 14:01Speaker 1: I'm sorry Christian Vasquez, and it just wasn't at the
- 14:05Speaker 1: time seemingly something that seemed like a great move. Christian
- 14:09Speaker 1: Vasquez popular in the clubhouse. The team was kind of
- 14:12Speaker 1: out of it, but not totally out of it. And
- 14:15Speaker 1: again that move worked out better than it looked at
- 14:19Speaker 1: the time. So in retrospect, heim Bloom did what he
- 14:24Speaker 1: was asked in rebuilding that farm system and putting the
- 14:27Speaker 1: Red Sox on a path to where they should be
- 14:31Speaker 1: in good position today to go forward and have a
- 14:34Speaker 1: strong young nucleus. It still might turn out that way
- 14:38Speaker 1: now what happened there. Alex korra heim Bloom power struggle,
- 14:42Speaker 1: Alex Cora wins, ownership backs him, heim Bloom's out, Craig Wrestlow's.
- 14:47Speaker 2: In, and here we go again.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And now people look back at heim Bloom and say,
- 14:53Speaker 1: what's so bad was it? And again positives and negatives
- 14:57Speaker 1: as there isn't any general manager or head of base
- 15:00Speaker 1: operations tenure. But look at what is going on now
- 15:04Speaker 1: in Saint Louis, with again a clear mandate. This team
- 15:09Speaker 1: is going back to its roots, trying to build through
- 15:13Speaker 1: young players, and they've assembled some young players, They've had
- 15:18Speaker 1: some that heim Blum inherited from the previous John Mazzelac regime,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and suddenly some good things are happening. We've seen the
- 15:25Speaker 1: Jordan Walker emergence. We've seen JJ Weatherholt top ten pick
- 15:29Speaker 1: who has been an absolute star for the Cardinals, and
- 15:33Speaker 1: we're seeing them play a brand of baseball that, while
- 15:37Speaker 1: not yet attracting fans back to the ballpark.
- 15:40Speaker 2: The Cardinals fans are pretty mad at ownership for the
- 15:42Speaker 2: last couple of years, and understandably so.
- 15:44Speaker 1: But in time, I expect that Cardinal baseball is going
- 15:49Speaker 1: to be back, and back in a big way. Now
- 15:52Speaker 1: you might ask, okay, what happens here if the Cardinals
- 15:58Speaker 1: are in position into deadline, to you maybe contend, do
- 16:01Speaker 1: they go forward? Do they make the same mistake the
- 16:04Speaker 1: Red Sox did under Bloom and sort of abandon the
- 16:07Speaker 1: plan or at least shift the plan. I would expect
- 16:10Speaker 1: if they're in it, they're going to be reactive to that,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and they'll make moves, modest moves perhaps, but they're not
- 16:17Speaker 1: going to disrupt what they've done.
- 16:19Speaker 2: If there's one lesson Bloom learned, it's to stay the course.
- 16:23Speaker 2: He's going to stay the course.
- 16:25Speaker 1: They're going to commit and stay committed to their young talent.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's simply a case of knowing who you are as
- 16:32Speaker 1: an organization, knowing where you are, and knowing how you
- 16:37Speaker 1: want to go forward. Now, do I expect the Cardinals
- 16:40Speaker 1: to stay at it? Not really, And the reason for
- 16:42Speaker 1: that is their pitching staff, which while so far, okay.
- 16:46Speaker 2: They've done some good things. They've got a back of
- 16:49Speaker 2: the bullpen that is at least formidable, and they've gotten
- 16:52Speaker 2: good work out of their starters. But this is a
- 16:54Speaker 2: team that is.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Last in the majors in strikeout rate. They don't miss bats,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and that's how the is play today. So ultimately, do
- 17:02Speaker 1: I believe that catches up with him.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I do. But at the same time, again, what
- 17:09Speaker 2: they're doing and the way they're playing, they're an extremely
- 17:13Speaker 2: talented defensive club, up in the top defensive metrics in
- 17:17Speaker 2: both outs above average and defensive run saved, so that
- 17:20Speaker 2: compensates a little bit for the lack of swing and miss.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You watch them in the Fox game on Saturday, there
- 17:27Speaker 2: were four double plays turned behind Michael McGreevy, some of
- 17:30Speaker 2: them quite brilliant. They've got Walker who looks like a star,
- 17:34Speaker 2: Weatherholt who looks like a star. Ryan Church pretty good
- 17:37Speaker 2: player in left field. Some really good.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Things are happening there. Ivon Herrera behind the plate another one.
- 17:43Speaker 1: So again I don't expect it to happen right away,
- 17:48Speaker 1: but what they're doing right now is far more than
- 17:51Speaker 1: their fans expected, and it gives their fans hope now
- 17:56Speaker 1: that okay, we're gonna be okay in the future and
- 18:00Speaker 1: the last couple of years. And the reason Cardinals fans
- 18:03Speaker 1: are so disaffected right now is because they didn't pick
- 18:06Speaker 1: a direction. They were kind of trying to do what
- 18:09Speaker 1: the Red Sox were doing, contend while developing and again
- 18:12Speaker 1: it's not impossible, it's just difficult to do. Obviously, Cleveland
- 18:17Speaker 1: does it, Tampa Bay does it, Milwaukee does it to
- 18:19Speaker 1: an extent, but those are lower pay roll teams. They
- 18:22Speaker 1: kind of have to go about it that way. Saint
- 18:24Speaker 1: Louis Cardinals Boston Red Sox a little bit different. Red
- 18:27Speaker 1: Sox of course above the Cardinals, at least in terms
- 18:31Speaker 1: of what they have resource wise. But hein Bloom right
- 18:34Speaker 1: now looking like a better head of baseball operations than
- 18:38Speaker 1: he did toward the end in Boston. And again it's
- 18:42Speaker 1: yet another lesson on the Red Sox dysfunction and where
- 18:46Speaker 1: the Red Sox have gone wrong multiple times over the years.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So keep your eye on the Cardinals as we go forward. Again,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I'm not expecting them to be a playoff team, but
- 18:57Speaker 1: they've been an entertaining team. They've been a competitive team,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and Underheim Bloom, I expect this only to continue and
- 19:04Speaker 1: only to get better.
- 19:06Speaker 2: We'll be back with the Grilling Ken segment right after this.

- 20:17Speaker 2: All right, here we go with Grill and Ken. Summer
- 20:18Speaker 2: is nearly upon us and the grills will be out.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Let's get to your questions.
- 20:23Speaker 1: First question from Chris Meeks fifty two seventy two. Are
- 20:27Speaker 1: we going to show some love to the rays today?
- 20:29Speaker 2: He's asking that of Scottie Braun Scott Braun, our host
- 20:33Speaker 2: of Foul Territory.
- 20:34Speaker 1: But I'll answer the question too, and yes, we are
- 20:36Speaker 1: going to show some love to the race.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I showed a little bit at the top of the show,
- 20:40Speaker 2: as I mentioned sixteen and five. Since their five and
- 20:43Speaker 2: seven start. The Rays are doing what the Rays seemingly
- 20:46Speaker 2: always do. And what I like about them is they
- 20:50Speaker 2: have an offensive trio that is really good. It's Yandy Diaz,
- 20:55Speaker 2: It's Jonathan Miranda, and of course it's Junior Caminero. They
- 20:59Speaker 2: also have, as usual, strong pitching. They're moving Griffin Jacks
- 21:02Speaker 2: to the rotation now, which is an interesting move. Shane
- 21:05Speaker 2: McClanahan looks like he's back. Drew Rasmussen always good, and
- 21:09Speaker 2: even without Pepio who's out for the year, they are
- 21:12Speaker 2: in a good position. Now.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Are they going to threaten the Yankees and become a
- 21:18Speaker 1: real legitimate contender for the Ali's title.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I'm not so sure about that.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I asked someone yesterday about the Rays and he said,
- 21:25Speaker 1: look at their hard hit percentage.
- 21:27Speaker 2: It's the lowest in the majors.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Regression is coming. Okay, that might be true, and certainly
- 21:32Speaker 1: the Rays caught a downcast Giants team this weekend. At
- 21:36Speaker 1: the same time, this is what they do, this is
- 21:39Speaker 1: who they are, and we see it nearly every year.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So I like what the Rays are doing. I'm a
- 21:45Speaker 1: big Chandler Simpson fan at the top of the order,
- 21:48Speaker 1: and let's see how it goes the rest of the way.
- 21:51Speaker 2: All right, time now for the next question, let's get
- 21:54Speaker 2: to it.
- 21:55Speaker 1: This one is from Hamilton on the Babe Porter. He says,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I would love to know if Ken thinks Keith Law
- 22:01Speaker 1: is onto something. Should the Angels trade Trout and should
- 22:05Speaker 1: the Phillies.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Go after him?
- 22:07Speaker 1: Okay, Mike Trout is enjoying so far resurgence season. Mike Trout,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and we've talked about this before, has never shown any
- 22:17Speaker 1: inclination to want to leave Anaheim. Now, maybe as it
- 22:21Speaker 1: gets later in his career, his mood is feeling might change.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But the Angels aren't going anywhere. We kind of know that.
- 22:29Speaker 1: We've seen their act over the last two weeks or so,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and Mike Trout, if he wants to contend, probably needs
- 22:37Speaker 1: to get out of there.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Right. We've said this for years.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Phillies outfield is short, and yeah, Mike Trout be a
- 22:43Speaker 1: great addition, but there are so many obstacles in the
- 22:46Speaker 1: way here. One would be Trout's own desire to win
- 22:50Speaker 1: and win in Anaheim and not anywhere else. Two, you'd
- 22:54Speaker 1: have to work out the finances. And if you're the Phillies,
- 22:57Speaker 1: that's another big contract to take on when they've got
- 23:01Speaker 1: a number of big contracts of aging, perhaps injury prone
- 23:04Speaker 1: players on the books.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I don't know that that is necessarily the way they
- 23:09Speaker 2: want to go now.
- 23:09Speaker 1: There are always ways to work these things out, but
- 23:13Speaker 1: as of now, I would say this is a long shot.
- 23:15Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the next one.
- 23:18Speaker 1: This question comes from armand is amazing a great questioner
- 23:21Speaker 1: always Ken. Which team do you believe is the best
- 23:23Speaker 1: chance to get out of the basement, the Mets or
- 23:26Speaker 1: the Giants?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Wow, I would say the Mets, but I'm not confident
- 23:34Speaker 2: in either team getting out of the basement. I believe
- 23:36Speaker 2: the Mets will get out of the basement. The Nationals ultimately,
- 23:40Speaker 2: I don't know that they can keep this up. But
- 23:42Speaker 2: the Mets are leaking in virtually every part of their
- 23:46Speaker 2: team offense, defense, rotation, bullpen. There's not a singular place
- 23:51Speaker 2: where you can say, well, they're good Man Eventually they'll
- 23:55Speaker 2: get lind Door back. That will help.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Polanco should come back, Roberts should come back, and maybe
- 24:00Speaker 1: at that point they score runs the.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Way they expected to score runs. Not everyone expected to
- 24:06Speaker 2: score like that, but people did think that their offense
- 24:09Speaker 2: would be good. The rotation behind Holmes and Peralta and
- 24:13Speaker 2: McLain is still a problem. Their bullpen at.
- 24:16Speaker 1: The back end, Weaver and Williams, it's been disappointing. I
- 24:19Speaker 1: don't see a great way out, but it's a long season.
- 24:24Speaker 1: The Giants, they've got a hit.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And so far no good for the Giants.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Devers and a Damis we mentioned them in the first segment.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Maybe Bryce Eldridge gives them a boost. But again, you're
- 24:35Speaker 1: asking a young player to do a lot at a
- 24:38Speaker 1: time of difficulty for the team. Generally not a great formula.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So if you're asking me which team do I expect
- 24:45Speaker 1: to climb out of the cellar, the Mets or Giants,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I generally prefer the answer to be in this case,
- 24:51Speaker 1: none of the above.
- 24:53Speaker 2: All right, I want to thank everyone for watching and listening.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Foul Territory coming up at one o'clock. There'll be a J.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Persinski Eric in Scott Broun hosting Marlins Pitcher, Tyler Phillips,
- 25:03Speaker 1: the San Francisco Chronicles, Susan Slusser, and the Boston Globes
- 25:07Speaker 1: Tim Healy stopping by.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It should be an interesting show. We will be back
- 25:11Speaker 2: Thursday and we'll see you then.
