- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, thank you for joining US.
- 0:01Speaker 2: President Trump says the US is closer than ever to
- 0:04Speaker 2: an agreement with Iran.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The President announced in a truth social post.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Today quote based on the fact that discussions with the
- 0:11Speaker 2: Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest
- 0:13Speaker 2: level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President
- 0:17Speaker 2: of the United States of America, canceled the scheduled strikes
- 0:20Speaker 2: and bombings against Iran this evening. Discussions and final points
- 0:23Speaker 2: have been in both concept and great detail, approved by
- 0:26Speaker 2: all parties involved. The agreement is not final, but President
- 0:30Speaker 2: Trump said in the Oval Office there could be a
- 0:32Speaker 2: signing ceremony as early as this weekend. The President's made
- 0:36Speaker 2: similar claims about the war before.
- 0:38Speaker 1: He was asked today, what makes this time different?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Because they've taken a pounding. They've taken a pounding like
- 0:46Speaker 3: very few people could take, and they want to make
- 0:48Speaker 3: the deal a lot more than I do. And we
- 0:52Speaker 3: could have had it done the other way, I guess,
- 0:53Speaker 3: but it would have taken longer.
- 0:56Speaker 2: These new developments come one day after the US military
- 0:59Speaker 2: launched another round of what it described as self defense
- 1:01Speaker 2: strikes on Iranian facilities.
- 1:03Speaker 1: We have team coverage on this story.
- 1:04Speaker 2: CBS News correspondent Natalie brand is at the White House.
- 1:07Speaker 2: CBS News pending on reporter Eleanor Watson is in our
- 1:10Speaker 2: Washington bureau, Saidentalie.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Let's start with you. What do we know about this
- 1:12Speaker 1: potential agreement, Hi, lindsay Will.
- 1:16Speaker 4: The President called this a great settlement of the war,
- 1:19Speaker 4: but also noted it is subject to finalization. As you noted,
- 1:23Speaker 4: the President saying that could happen over the next few days,
- 1:27Speaker 4: with a signing ceremony, he says, in Europe as early
- 1:30Speaker 4: potentially as this weekend.
- 1:32Speaker 1: He also said that once.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Signed, the Strait of Hormus would be immediately reopened, and
- 1:38Speaker 4: then in turn, the US naval blockade on Iranian linked
- 1:42Speaker 4: ships would be lifted.
- 1:43Speaker 5: But it is.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Important to note that diplomatic sources speaking to CBS News
- 1:48Speaker 4: is Margaret Brennan, say that this initial memorandum of understanding,
- 1:52Speaker 4: if signed, would then lead to a sixty day period
- 1:57Speaker 4: of Phase two of talks really which get into the
- 2:00Speaker 4: details the complex details of an agreement between the US
- 2:05Speaker 4: and Iran that pertains to the future of Iran's nuclear program.
- 2:10Speaker 4: According to the sources, Iran would potentially commit to a
- 2:13Speaker 4: moratorium or lockout of around fifteen to twenty years, during
- 2:16Speaker 4: which Iran would not enrich uranium. The President note previously
- 2:21Speaker 4: said that he wanted a permanent and total ban, not
- 2:24Speaker 4: just a moratorium.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Now.
- 2:26Speaker 4: In exchange, Iran would receive financial relief staggered over time
- 2:30Speaker 4: depending on compliance with an agreement. But in the Oval today,
- 2:35Speaker 4: the President said, in his view, this deal would ensure
- 2:38Speaker 4: that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Lindsey, what are you going to be watching for in
- 2:43Speaker 1: the next few hours and days. So we'll be.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Closely watching in the next couple of days if this
- 2:50Speaker 4: signing agreement comes to fruition, he says, if it happens
- 2:53Speaker 4: this weekend, then he would send the Vice President jd Vance.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Of course, the President has this big UFC fight here
- 2:59Speaker 4: at the White House on Sunday, and then you know
- 3:02Speaker 4: that kicks off.
- 3:03Speaker 1: If that happens.
- 3:04Speaker 4: There's this really complicated next phase of technical talks that
- 3:08Speaker 4: are going to go on for a couple of months,
- 3:11Speaker 4: and sources telling Margaret that the time period could even
- 3:13Speaker 4: be extended, you know, depending on these.
- 3:16Speaker 1: How these talks go.
- 3:18Speaker 4: And already, lindsay, some lawmakers over on Capitol Hill are
- 3:21Speaker 4: signaling that they want oversight or review of a potential.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Nuclear agreement with Iran.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Notably Trump ally Lindsey Graham says that in agreement reached
- 3:30Speaker 4: with Iran on nuclear issues must be presented to Congress
- 3:35Speaker 4: for review and approval.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Lindsay, Natalie Brand, thank you, CBS Newspending On Reporter Eleanor
- 3:42Speaker 2: Watson joins US. Now, so the President says we've got
- 3:44Speaker 2: an agreement. Just yesterday, the US was striking Iran. Can
- 3:47Speaker 2: you walk us through what's been happening in the region
- 3:49Speaker 2: the last couple days.
- 3:51Speaker 5: A Lindsey, there have been two nights of strikes in
- 3:54Speaker 5: a row of US strikes against Iran that were triggered
- 3:57Speaker 5: by the downing of the Apache helicopter on Monday. The
- 4:00Speaker 5: strikes have been bigger than the usual tit for tat
- 4:03Speaker 5: violations of the ceasefire we've seen over the past two months.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Last night, strikes, according to the military, hit across Iran,
- 4:10Speaker 5: hitting targets like surveillance capabilities, communication nodes, and air defense systems.
- 4:16Speaker 5: The President, as you mentioned, announced another round of strikes
- 4:19Speaker 5: for tonight, but called them.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Off hours later.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Just hours later after he says there is some diplomatic
- 4:26Speaker 5: progress towards actually ending the war.
- 4:30Speaker 2: For announcing the potential deal, President Trump said he was
- 4:32Speaker 2: interested in taking Iran's Carg Island.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Can you explain what the significance of that would be.
- 4:39Speaker 5: This is a renewed threat from President Trump. He's talked
- 4:41Speaker 5: about this before, and that's because Carg Island is key
- 4:44Speaker 5: to Iran's economy. It's where ninety percent of Iran's oil
- 4:48Speaker 5: exports flow through. The US has hit military targets on
- 4:51Speaker 5: Carg Island before, but has stayed away from attacking any
- 4:54Speaker 5: of the oil infrastructure. When the President threatens taking Carg Island,
- 4:58Speaker 5: that leaves open the door for attacking it from the air,
- 5:01Speaker 5: but also potentially putting troops on the ground through an
- 5:05Speaker 5: amphibious landing of some sort. But remember Carg Island is
- 5:08Speaker 5: deep inside the Persian Gulf. You'd have to get through
- 5:11Speaker 5: the dangers of the Strait of Hormuz, and the island
- 5:13Speaker 5: is only fifteen miles from the coast of Iran, so
- 5:16Speaker 5: it's still threatened by the cruise missiles, the drones, and
- 5:19Speaker 5: the fast attack boats that Iran still has, and that
- 5:22Speaker 5: means any mission to seize it would potentially risk some casualties.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Okay, Eleanor Watson, thank you,
