- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I hope that you're having a
- 0:17great day. Today we are in Psalm 119 once
- 0:22again. We are, I believe this is our
- 0:24fourth section and we are going through verses 25 through 32,
- 0:29Psalm, Psalm 119, verses 25 through 32, and we are looking
- 0:34at all of these verses start with the Hebrew letter Dalith,
- 0:40the Hebrew letter Dalith. And as I mentioned in previous
- 0:45episodes, Psalm 118 is all about the Word of God and all of the
- 0:4922 sections within Psalm 119, it's all acrostics and it's
- 0:53basically from A-Z all about the Word of God.
- 0:57And so that's what we're going to read about today.
- 1:00When you see a different synonyms given to God's Word,
- 1:04you'll see word statutes, precepts, wonders, instruction,
- 1:12ordinances, commands, and the way of truth and decrees.
- 1:18So those are the words that you're listening for.
- 1:21It's not always going to say like the Bible is this.
- 1:24You got to think about the different ways in which God
- 1:26Word, God's word comes to us. Let's begin reading verse 25.
- 1:31My life is down in the dust. Give me life through your word.
- 1:37I told you about my life and you answered me.
- 1:41Teach me your statutes. Help me understand the meaning
- 1:46of Your precepts so that I can meditate on Your wonders.
- 1:51I am weary from grief. Strengthen me through Your word,
- 1:56Keep me from the way of deceit, and graciously give me Your
- 2:00instruction. I've chosen the way of truth.
- 2:04I've set your ordinances before me.
- 2:06I cling to your decrees. Yahweh.
- 2:09Do not put me to shame. I pursue the way of your
- 2:14commands for you. Broaden my understanding.
- 2:18Well, there are three things in particular through this Psalm
- 2:21that I think we can walk away with today.
- 2:23And the first of these is that God's Word gives us life.
- 2:28God's Word gives us life. We can see that in verse #25 My
- 2:32life is down in the dust. Give me life through Your Word.
- 2:36I told you about my life and You answered me.
- 2:39Teach me Your statutes. You can see in verse #28 I am
- 2:43weary from grief. Strengthen me through Your word.
- 2:49God's word is the life giving thing.
- 2:52You can think all the way back to the beginning of creation and
- 2:56in the Garden of Eden. What did God use to create life?
- 3:00He used His word, He spoke and it came to be when God wanted to
- 3:06create people. He used his word when He wanted
- 3:11to create his people like his unique ones out of all of
- 3:15mankind. He used his word to call Abraham
- 3:19from Mesopotamia into the land of Canaan, and he used his word
- 3:24to deliver the message to Moses that Moses and the children of
- 3:28Israel would leave Egypt by the command and the word of God.
- 3:32And before they went into the Promised land, God gave them his
- 3:37word, the 10 commandments, and the law that was there, and all
- 3:41of it was given by the word of God.
- 3:45You want to live, truly live, listen to the Word of God.
- 3:50It's what Jesus says. He says I've come that they
- 3:52might have life and that they might have it more abundantly or
- 3:57as he prayed to the Father, he said sanctify them.
- 4:00Set apart your people through your truth.
- 4:03Your word is truth today if you're just at rock bottom.
- 4:10I love the phrase here that the psalmist puts in the beginning
- 4:13of verse #25 My life is down in the dust.
- 4:17This word life, It's your soul. It's at the core of who you are
- 4:22as a person. When you are clinging, to hear
- 4:25the dust being talked about could be like the dust of death,
- 4:28that Adam was taken from the dust and to dust he would
- 4:32return. So it could be talking about
- 4:34death. It could be kind of an earthly
- 4:36mindedness to just say, God, I recognize that I am so stuck in
- 4:41the here and now and I am down in the dirt and I don't
- 4:45recognize who you are, what your plans are, what your desire is
- 4:49for my life. And so God, since I'm down in
- 4:52the dust, I know who can make something out of the dust.
- 4:56I know who can bring me up from rock bottom.
- 4:59It's the Lord. And how does he do it?
- 5:01He does it through his word. And so this can be a prayer
- 5:05request that we have. God give me life through your
- 5:10word. God, bring some life into my
- 5:13dead spiritual state right now where I'm not really feeling it
- 5:16and I don't have the emotions that perhaps I should have of,
- 5:21of joy and of peace and of just a delight in you.
- 5:27I, I don't experience that right now.
- 5:29So God, my life is down in the dust.
- 5:31Give me life through your word. God, this relationship right now
- 5:35is totally dead and I need you to breathe new life into it.
- 5:39Restore this relationship with my kid, restore this
- 5:42relationship with my spouse. God, right now in my workplace,
- 5:47I have been just totally earthly minded.
- 5:49I haven't been a, a witness for you to my coworkers, even
- 5:53through my work ethic. And so God, would you breathe
- 5:56new life into the way that I work and I interact with others?
- 6:00God, would you breathe life into your local church that I am a
- 6:05part of through your word? What we need quintessentially is
- 6:10the word of God. We need his declarations.
- 6:13His way of living is what we need to be all about.
- 6:17So that's number one that I can see from this section of
- 6:22Scripture is that God's Word gives us life.
- 6:25And so we can ask God to give us life, that He would energize us,
- 6:29that He would bring us comfort, that he would bring us up from a
- 6:35place of rock bottom into a place of joy.
- 6:38That's something we can ask God for.
- 6:41Then secondly, I noticed in this portion that God's Word can only
- 6:47be understood rightly with God's help.
- 6:51God's word can only be understood rightly with God's
- 6:55help. You can see this in verse #26
- 6:58the end of it. He says, I told you about my
- 7:00life and you answered me. Teach me your statutes or verse
- 7:0427, help me understand the meaning of Your precepts so that
- 7:10I can meditate on your wonders or all the way down in verse 32,
- 7:15I pursue the way of your commands for you.
- 7:20Broaden my understanding there. God is the one that teaches us
- 7:26his statutes. Now you can say, OK, well, I'm,
- 7:29I'm reading scripture. I'm going to grab real quick.
- 7:31I've got my my preaching Bible is right next to me.
- 7:36I have this Bible and I can say, well, I'm, you know, reading
- 7:39this verse. Here's John 938 I believe Lord,
- 7:46he said, and he worshipped him. Okay, well, I can read a verse
- 7:49and I can say, well, I have taught myself statutes of the
- 7:53Lord and I can believe in the Lord and I can worship him.
- 7:57But what Paul tells us in Second Corinthians is that the things
- 8:02of God like the truths of the Word of God, the ability to
- 8:06believe what Scripture says and take it as it truly is, not the
- 8:11word of man, but the Word of God that requires the work of the
- 8:15Holy Spirit. Because all of us, because of
- 8:17sin, have blinders on our eyes. And Paul says they've been those
- 8:22blinders have been placed there by Satan who wants to keep us
- 8:27from seeing the glorious light of the gospel.
- 8:30And So what we need is for God to illuminate our understanding
- 8:35because we are earthly minded. We are not heavenly minded.
- 8:38We don't see things from God's perspective or God's way.
- 8:41We encounter sin, whether in our own life or in the lives of
- 8:45those around us. And we excuse it away because we
- 8:49don't think about the ramifications that sin has.
- 8:53We don't think about the fact that it's an affront to God's
- 8:57character and his nature. It's not just a a random list of
- 9:01rules and do's and don'ts. God's word is a reflection of
- 9:05who he is. And so we need God to help.
- 9:11We need God for us to understand his word.
- 9:14And I love there in verse 27. Help me understand the meaning
- 9:19of your precepts. You can just read a verse and if
- 9:22you will, you can take it just at face value.
- 9:26And certainly there's times where that is the meaning of the
- 9:29precept of the word. But especially as I think about
- 9:31what the psalmist here would have likely had, would not have
- 9:34been like the, you know, epistles of Paul where it's
- 9:38super easy and he's like, hey, forgive people as Christ has
- 9:42forgiven you. And we go, OK, you don't really
- 9:44have to think super deep about what's the meaning of this.
- 9:46But as the psalmist here most likely had the initial five
- 9:52books of scripture, the the Pentateuch, the Torah, Genesis
- 9:55through Deuteronomy, he would need to understand God.
- 9:59What am I supposed to learn as a result of the story that you are
- 10:03writing through my people, the Jews?
- 10:07And for us today as we interact with the word of God, certainly
- 10:10there are just kind of very clear, easy things that we can
- 10:15understand and we get the meaning of as we read through
- 10:19them. But there are other portions of
- 10:20Scripture that is I'm reading through even as a pastor and I,
- 10:25I love preaching expository messages, working verse by verse
- 10:29through a book of Scripture. That's the way that I just, I
- 10:33love it, I grow from it. But as I encounter new portions
- 10:38of Scripture that I've never preached through before, I've
- 10:40never talked through before, I'm going, God, would you help me?
- 10:44Like I don't want to just get up on a Sunday and give a talk.
- 10:50I don't just even want to regurgitate previous things that
- 10:53I've said. I want to bring the Word of God
- 10:58to the people of God in such a way that the Spirit of God uses
- 11:01it to transform us. And so if that's going to
- 11:05happen, then I have to hear from the Holy Spirit.
- 11:08I have to know the meaning of the precept of the word of God.
- 11:12And how do we do that? It's not through.
- 11:14OK, God, would you help send me to some fancy seminary so that I
- 11:20can get a Mdiv so that then I can finally understand the word?
- 11:24No, though certainly theological training can help you understand
- 11:29the Word of God. I'm thankful for the theological
- 11:32training that I've received, but that's not the quintessential
- 11:37thing that helps you understand the Word of God.
- 11:39There are plenty of people that have an MDV or that have a
- 11:42doctorate of ministry, and yet they do not understand the Word
- 11:46of God because they know a lot about it, but they don't have
- 11:49the Holy Spirit of God that is living inside of them.
- 11:52They're not relying on the Lord to tell them the meaning of the
- 11:56Word of God. And so this isn't something
- 11:58that's inherently just individualistic.
- 12:01When God made a people, he made a people that there are multiple
- 12:05people together. And so we listen to our brothers
- 12:07and sisters in the Lord because sometimes we might think a
- 12:10passage means something when it truly doesn't.
- 12:12And being able to have some faithful, you know, pastors or
- 12:16elders or teachers or even just other people within the church
- 12:19that are able to say like, Hey, you said this, but actually this
- 12:24verse over here says this or no, no, no, you're just
- 12:26misunderstanding that word. It actually means this.
- 12:30And so we can listen to one another and through the Holy
- 12:33Spirit of God working through the people of God, we can
- 12:36understand the word of God. But the ultimate understanding
- 12:39of the word comes through reliance on God.
- 12:41So the word of God gives us life.
- 12:43The word of God can only be understood through the Holy
- 12:46Spirit of God. It has to be taught to us by
- 12:49God. And so we need to pray and ask
- 12:51the Lord God, would you help me to understand what I'm going
- 12:54through right now in your word or in this passage of Scripture?
- 12:58It's even a great thing to pray each Sunday as you hear the word
- 13:01of God preached at your church, that you would pray before the
- 13:07message. God, would you help me to
- 13:10understand what you want from me as a result of what I'm going to
- 13:14hear from your word. And that would be a great prayer
- 13:16to pray. Then lastly, today God's Word
- 13:20shows us that there is a good way and there is a wrong way.
- 13:24We can see this in verse #29 and 30.
- 13:29He says keep me from the way of deceit and graciously give me
- 13:34your instruction. I have chosen the way of truth.
- 13:37I have set your ordinances before me.
- 13:40And then again in verse 32, I pursue the way of your commands.
- 13:45So here there are two ways. There's a way of deceit, of
- 13:49lies, of treachery, and there is a way of truth, the way of God's
- 13:54commands and Scripture really lays out for us.
- 13:58There's a way that follows Satan and his lies and this world and
- 14:03their lack of understanding of how reality works.
- 14:07Because God is the one that put this thing together and he put
- 14:10it together in a specific way so that as we follow His commands
- 14:13in his way and his truth, we experience the good life, the
- 14:17life that He created us for. We find that bless that happy
- 14:21life that we heard about just a couple episodes ago.
- 14:24I believe it was in Psalm 119, one that there is a blessing, a
- 14:28happiness for the people that follow the way of God and hear
- 14:32the prayer of this psalmist is God.
- 14:34It is easy for me to go the way of deceit that I think through
- 14:40my anger, through my bitterness. I think through my greed and my
- 14:44covetousness or my lust or my idolatry.
- 14:48I think through focusing on myself and my selfishness that I
- 14:53will have a good life. But the truth is, we need to
- 14:56walk in the way of truth. How do we know what truth is?
- 14:59How do we know what the right way to interact is?
- 15:01We go to the Word of God. It tells us what is right, what
- 15:06is wrong, how to get it right, and how to keep it right.
- 15:09There from Second Timothy 316 and 17 that from a child you
- 15:13have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise
- 15:16unto salvation. For the Word of God is is quick
- 15:20and powerful and and sharper than any 2 edged sword, piercing
- 15:23even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and the bones
- 15:27and marrow. And it is a discerner of the
- 15:29thoughts and intents of the heart.
- 15:33And so God's Word is the most important thing that we can ever
- 15:37invest in. And so I want to encourage you
- 15:39today as you encounter the word of God, ask Lord, give me life
- 15:44through your word. Give me the energy that I need
- 15:46for today. Bring me to a place of joy and
- 15:49stability through your word. And you can ask the Lord.
- 15:53God, help me to understand your word.
- 15:56And he might use other people. He might use a podcast, He might
- 16:00use a study Bible or something to help you understand His word.
- 16:04But ask for the Lord to help you and realize when you come to the
- 16:08Bible that you need supernatural aid if you are going to come
- 16:12away with the understanding that God wants you to.
- 16:15And so ask the Lord for that. And then recognize that
- 16:18Scripture gives us the right way and the wrong way.
- 16:20We are tempted towards the wrong way.
- 16:22He says keep me from the way of deceit because it's a way I will
- 16:26often try to go. He says keep me from the way of
- 16:28deceit. And instead he says I have
- 16:30chosen the way of truth. Choose each day.
- 16:33I'm going to walk the way of God.
- 16:36I'm not going to walk my own way.
- 16:37Satan wants to trick me. He wants to lie to me.
- 16:39He wants to send me to hell. But I'm not going that way.
- 16:42I am going the way of Jesus, the way of truth.
- 16:46I hope that today's portion of Scripture was life giving to
- 16:51you. And I'm looking forward to next
- 16:54episode. We're going to be in verses 33
- 16:56through 40 looking at the verses that start with the Hebrew
- 17:01letter. It's either he or heck, I'll
- 17:04look before next episode. Thanks for tuning in.
- 17:06Have a wonderful day.
