- 0:00Speaker 1: Boys, it is getting crazy around here. What's up, Tigers fans?
- 0:03Speaker 1: What's up, LSU and Lane Kiffin haters? Because I'm sure
- 0:06Speaker 1: you guys are tuned in for this one as well.
- 0:09Speaker 1: College athletics has found another massive standoff that we've all
- 0:15Speaker 1: forced ourselves into. We are college football addiction, and we
- 0:18Speaker 1: are presented by PrizePix. More on them in just a moment.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But LSU Tigers football is currently sitting at the center
- 0:25Speaker 1: of of a high-stakes legal collision between conference authority and
- 0:30Speaker 1: the courtroom. The lawsuits don't actually mention LSU, and LSU
- 0:34Speaker 1: hasn't sued anybody. But when you look at the drama
- 0:38Speaker 1: that is happening right now in our sports, they are
- 0:41Speaker 1: clearly in the middle of it. There have been aggressive
- 0:45Speaker 1: roster maneuvers, and there are brand-new league policies that have
- 0:48Speaker 1: pushed tensions in this field to a boiling point over
- 0:53Speaker 1: the last few days. The stakes for really not only
- 0:57Speaker 1: LSU's program, but every program in the country could not
- 0:59Speaker 1: be much higher than they are right now. That's true
- 1:02Speaker 1: for LSU, both on the sideline and behind closed doors.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And depending on how this battle plays out, the potential
- 1:09Speaker 1: fallout could reshape the entire season and sport. If you've
- 1:13Speaker 1: been following the drama this week, you know just how
- 1:15Speaker 1: rapidly the landscape is shaping. There is a critical calendar
- 1:19Speaker 1: deadline that is looming, and the next ruling will decide
- 1:23Speaker 1: who actually holds the power. We've got a lot that
- 1:25Speaker 1: I want to talk about today, so let's jump right
- 1:27Speaker 1: into it. And I'd love to hear your thoughts before
- 1:30Speaker 1: I even get to the end of this on what
- 1:32Speaker 1: the heck is going to happen next in college football
- 1:34Speaker 1: with this Lane Kiffin drama and LSU and NFL players
- 1:39Speaker 1: and courts and the SEC and everything else. The SEC
- 1:43Speaker 1: this week put a price tag on defiance. and the
- 1:47Speaker 1: number is large enough to reshape how a program plans
- 1:50Speaker 1: an entire season. This week, the league finalized the penalty
- 1:53Speaker 1: structure attached to its new professional sports rule. If an
- 1:58Speaker 1: SEC school puts a former pro on its roster, that
- 2:01Speaker 1: sports head coach must sit out for 50% of the season.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The school will also pay a fine equal to 50%
- 2:09Speaker 1: of that sports annual operating budget. On top of that,
- 2:12Speaker 1: the school loses its SEC voting privileges to on league
- 2:16Speaker 1: business matters. And the suspension is not just a sideline ban.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It completely bars the coach from all coaching, all recruiting,
- 2:24Speaker 1: all administrative duties, mirroring the language the NCAA already uses
- 2:29Speaker 1: in its ghost transfer sanctions. That means no texting recruits,
- 2:34Speaker 1: no staff meetings, no quietly running the operation from the
- 2:38Speaker 1: back office. The rule itself is written with an intentionally
- 2:43Speaker 1: and an exceptionally wide scope. It bars any SEC roster
- 2:47Speaker 1: from including an athlete who declared for the NFL, NBA,
- 2:51Speaker 1: or WNBA draft without properly withdrawing. It also covers anyone
- 2:56Speaker 1: who simply appeared on a pro roster. The league passed
- 3:01Speaker 1: the ban 16-0 on Tuesday night. Every school voted yes,
- 3:05Speaker 1: including the LSU Tigers president. But then came the second
- 3:09Speaker 1: vote a day later, the one that actually attached punishment
- 3:13Speaker 1: to And that one finished 15 to nothing. LSU abstained,
- 3:17Speaker 1: according to multiple reports from not only ESPN, but The Athletic.
- 3:21Speaker 1: One abstination out of 16 is not a clerical accident.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It is a message from LSU. And the reason for
- 3:29Speaker 1: that message is sitting on LSU's roster board right now.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Within days of a Louisiana temporary restraining order, Lane Kiffin
- 3:37Speaker 1: landed former Ole Miss tight end Daquan Wright, who posted
- 3:40Speaker 1: 39 catches for 635 yards. He earned second-team All-SEC honors
- 3:46Speaker 1: and received an NFL Combine invite. He also landed 6'7, 6'7.5, 6'8,
- 3:51Speaker 1: based on where you're reading it, 330-pound defensive tackle Xavier Harris,
- 3:58Speaker 1: who recorded 58 tackles last year, nine for loss, three sacks,
- 4:02Speaker 1: across 15 starts. Wright's timeline is the spark that lit
- 4:06Speaker 1: the fuse. He dressed for the Browns' preseason game against Buffalo.
- 4:10Speaker 1: He was waived on Monday, and he cleared waivers on Tuesday.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That exact sequence, a player moving from an NFL sideline
- 4:19Speaker 1: to a college transfer portal in roughly 72 hours, is
- 4:23Speaker 1: what triggered the SEC's emergency action. Kevin has also recruited
- 4:27Speaker 1: former Notre Dame edge junior Tui Halamaka, who would reportedly
- 4:31Speaker 1: be permissible under the rule because he never signed a
- 4:34Speaker 1: pro contract. So the league did not just build a wall.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It built one with a very specific door left open.
- 4:41Speaker 1: There's another detail that explains the design. CBS Sports' Matt
- 4:45Speaker 1: Norlander reported the SEC and the Big Ten power brokers
- 4:48Speaker 1: believe the rule survives legal challenge precisely because the penalties
- 4:53Speaker 1: target coaches and programs rather than the athletes. You punish
- 4:59Speaker 1: a player and you probably have an antitrust fight over
- 5:02Speaker 1: an individual's right to earn. But if you punish a
- 5:04Speaker 1: coach and a budget, then the league is simply governing
- 5:08Speaker 1: its own members. Neither Kiffin nor LSU's administration has commented publicly,
- 5:13Speaker 1: which leaves the Tigers standing between a conference and their
- 5:17Speaker 1: compliance in a courtroom. And that theory of the case,
- 5:21Speaker 1: that the SEC is untouchable because it only punishes its own,
- 5:25Speaker 1: is exactly where a problem starts. That's because a court
- 5:29Speaker 1: had already looked at this same question and answered it
- 5:32Speaker 1: a little bit differently. I'll get to that in just
- 5:34Speaker 1: a moment, but first I do want to tell you,
- 5:36Speaker 1: all of this drama off the field is hopefully coming
- 5:39Speaker 1: to an end because tomorrow we get actual real life football.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And I could not be more thrilled about that. I
- 5:45Speaker 1: got two picks for you. I'm wearing the FSU polo.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I've been called out for it enough, not wearing it
- 5:50Speaker 1: on certain shows. So we're taking Ashton Daniels is more
- 5:54Speaker 1: on his rushing total there. I'm also taking the more
- 5:58Speaker 1: on the TCU passing total. I know it's Dublin. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: know it's rain. I know it's nasty, but I like
- 6:04Speaker 1: the more on both of those. I think UNC is
- 6:06Speaker 1: in a lot of trouble in this game. The spread
- 6:08Speaker 1: keeps moving up and up and up towards TCU. I
- 6:10Speaker 1: think TCU is going to be able to throw the
- 6:12Speaker 1: ball around a little bit. It's a low total because
- 6:13Speaker 1: it's in Dublin. Give me the more on both those.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Use our code HMA over on the PrizePix app. All
- 6:18Speaker 1: new users who do that get $ 150 instantly when they
- 6:21Speaker 1: set a $ 5 lineup and win it on the PrizePix
- 6:25Speaker 1: app using, again, code HMA. Now, the most consequential wrinkle
- 6:31Speaker 1: in this entire fifth-year eligibility fight came out of Texas,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and it did something the Louisiana orders only implied. A
- 6:40Speaker 1: Texas court explicitly identified the SEC as a restrained actor
- 6:47Speaker 1: rather than treating the NCAA as the sole defendant. Tied
- 6:52Speaker 1: to the eligibility case of former NBA player Bryson Warren,
- 6:56Speaker 1: that ruling is now being cited by the LSU-bound players'
- 7:00Speaker 1: legal team as the roadmap for neutralizing the conference's brand
- 7:05Speaker 1: new ban. What's all that mean? Break that down a
- 7:08Speaker 1: little bit. Take it out of the legalese. The Louisiana
- 7:12Speaker 1: TRO issued by Baton Rouge Judge William Jordan restrains the
- 7:17Speaker 1: NCAA's officers from agents, employees, reps, successors, and it assigns
- 7:25Speaker 1: all persons acting in concert or participation with it. That
- 7:29Speaker 1: last phrase is really the whole ballgame. The players argue
- 7:33Speaker 1: that that language captures the SEC and Commissioner Greg Sankey
- 7:37Speaker 1: directly without either of them ever being sued. Darren Heitner,
- 7:42Speaker 1: who represents Wright and Harris, posted that the SEC is
- 7:45Speaker 1: no stranger. It is at a minimum a participant. And
- 7:50Speaker 1: his proof is not just a theory. It is Sankey's
- 7:53Speaker 1: own paperwork. Sankey submitted an affidavit on August 13th in
- 7:58Speaker 1: Lewis's case and another before Judge Roland Johnson in East
- 8:02Speaker 1: Baton Rouge Parish. In those filings, he wrote that letting
- 8:05Speaker 1: pros return fuels disruption and creates fundamental unfairness for athletes
- 8:12Speaker 1: who stayed in the collegiate model. That is the trap.
- 8:18Speaker 1: By filing affidavits inside these specific lawsuits, the commissioner arguably
- 8:23Speaker 1: documented himself as a participant in the very litigation the
- 8:28Speaker 1: order governs. The scope of that order is also larger
- 8:31Speaker 1: than most people realize. The underlying Louisiana TRO covered 33 athletes,
- 8:37Speaker 1: including 16 football players. It allowed them to enter the
- 8:41Speaker 1: portal outside the January window. It enjoined both the ghost
- 8:45Speaker 1: transfer rule and the NCAA's rule of restitution, which is
- 8:50Speaker 1: the provision the NCAA normally uses to claw back wins
- 8:53Speaker 1: and punish schools after court rulings get reversed. The condition
- 8:58Speaker 1: was straightforward. The players had to terminate their pro contracts
- 9:02Speaker 1: and repay their earnings. Eight players entered the portal immediately,
- 9:06Speaker 1: including Wright, Harris, TJ Harden, Waylon Lupacho, and Trent Hendrick.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Former LSU defensive end Jack Pyburn, who participated in the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Buccaneers' preseason, is also still a plaintiff, and he still
- 9:21Speaker 1: faces the choice between the NFL and college. For LSU fans,
- 9:25Speaker 1: the practical stakes of all of this could be reduced
- 9:28Speaker 1: down to one sentence. If the courts treat conferences as
- 9:31Speaker 1: agents of the NCAA, then Kiffin's additions can take the
- 9:36Speaker 1: field and the SEC's penalties further. lose their threats or
- 9:40Speaker 1: their teeth entirely if the courts do not. LSU is
- 9:44Speaker 1: looking at a suspended head coach and a fine worth
- 9:47Speaker 1: half of its football operating budget. But there is a
- 9:51Speaker 1: hard limit sitting on that argument, and it has a
- 9:55Speaker 1: limit on its date. A temporary restraining order is temporary
- 9:59Speaker 1: by definition. and this one expires on Saturday, which is
- 10:03Speaker 1: why one attorney is no longer arguing that the SEC
- 10:06Speaker 1: broke a rule. He is arguing that the SEC broke
- 10:09Speaker 1: a judge's order, and he wants the commissioner, Greg Sankey,
- 10:13Speaker 1: brought into a Baton Rouge courtroom to answer for it.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Baton Rouge attorney Tony Clayton is assisting the 33 plaintiffs,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and he separately represents LSU basketball signee R.J. Lewis Jr.
- 10:26Speaker 1: He told Tiger Rag that the SEC's new policy flat-out
- 10:31Speaker 1: violates Louisiana law. His core argument collapses the distinction the
- 10:36Speaker 1: SEC is counting on. He said SEC schools, by operational law,
- 10:42Speaker 1: are derivatives of the NCAA. They are the NCAA. So
- 10:47Speaker 1: if the NCAA is prevented from taking any punitive action
- 10:52Speaker 1: against these young players, then the SEC is too. Then
- 10:56Speaker 1: he went past legal theory and made it personal. He said,
- 11:00Speaker 1: why doesn't he come down here to Louisiana and explain
- 11:03Speaker 1: to a judge how he can overrule a judge's injunction?
- 11:07Speaker 1: He said, that's the craziest thing I've seen in quite
- 11:10Speaker 1: some time. I don't know the commissioner. I've never met him.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Don't care to meet him. But he needs to follow
- 11:15Speaker 1: the rules of the courts here in Louisiana. And he's
- 11:18Speaker 1: not the only lawyer that's using that word. Texas-based attorney
- 11:22Speaker 1: Ryan Downsend said the SEC's actions put the NCAA in
- 11:26Speaker 1: contempt of multiple court orders. And he called it cartel-like conduct.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Downton told Yahoo's Ross Dellinger he plans to seek a
- 11:36Speaker 1: contempt ruling against the NCAA for letting conferences violate court orders.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This is, to me, a little more than just Twitter
- 11:46Speaker 1: fingers going off. These are very serious and significant escalations
- 11:51Speaker 1: because contempt is not about whether the rule is fair.
- 11:55Speaker 1: It's solely about whether the order was obeyed. Clayton's argument
- 12:00Speaker 1: is the one that LSU fans will recognize instantly because
- 12:03Speaker 1: it is about fairness. The class of 2022 was excluded
- 12:08Speaker 1: from the new five for five eligibility model. So those
- 12:11Speaker 1: players made their pro decisions before they ever even knew
- 12:15Speaker 1: that a fifth year might exist. He said, you can't
- 12:18Speaker 1: deprive these young athletes who would have stayed in college,
- 12:21Speaker 1: but for you not having this rule in effect. It's
- 12:26Speaker 1: now in effect, and they have a right to take
- 12:28Speaker 1: advantage of it. Now, today is where the calendar takes over.
- 12:34Speaker 1: The Jordan TRO expires on Saturday with a hearing set
- 12:37Speaker 1: for Monday in Louisiana's 19th Judicial District Court, where Clayton
- 12:42Speaker 1: will seek a broader injunction. He said the SEC and
- 12:45Speaker 1: the commissioner can do whatever they want to do, but
- 12:49Speaker 1: they have to abide by the rules of a Louisiana courtroom.
- 12:53Speaker 1: He's predicting a favorable ruling that would supersede any conference rule.
- 12:57Speaker 1: So Monday is the hinge. A broader injunction would put
- 13:01Speaker 1: Wright and Harris on the field. It would leave the
- 13:04Speaker 1: SEC's 50% suspension unenforceable in Louisiana. No injunction. And Kiffin
- 13:10Speaker 1: is choosing between two rosters and his own sideline. Either way,
- 13:15Speaker 1: the next ruling decides whether a conference can outrank a
- 13:18Speaker 1: court order. And everything you have just heard today is
- 13:22Speaker 1: dependent on that answer. I think there's a lot of
- 13:25Speaker 1: ways that you can look at this. You can feel
- 13:27Speaker 1: bad that the players didn't know about the five for five.
- 13:29Speaker 1: You can also say, hey man, sometimes life isn't fair.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And that might be the case too. It would surprise
- 13:36Speaker 1: me if all of this went down and the SEC
- 13:39Speaker 1: was told, you cannot punish your own members. I understand
- 13:44Speaker 1: they will not be able to punish the players. And
- 13:47Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the college football playoff committee
- 13:48Speaker 1: that would one day step up and say, look, then
- 13:50Speaker 1: you can't tell us what to do. We just won't
- 13:52Speaker 1: put them in the playoff. And then in that moment,
- 13:54Speaker 1: maybe Lane Kiffin would have a decision to make. But
- 13:57Speaker 1: I think you guys need to grab your popcorn and
- 13:59Speaker 1: buckle up because this thing's just getting started. This is
- 14:03Speaker 1: very similar to the Brendan Sorsby case in that certainly
- 14:06Speaker 1: none of these players bet on their own team. Certainly
- 14:09Speaker 1: not trying to imply that. I don't think there's an
- 14:11Speaker 1: immoral stance that's being taken here. But it is one
- 14:15Speaker 1: that elicits a lot of emotion because Lane Kiffin is
- 14:18Speaker 1: usually in the middle of things like this. And so
- 14:20Speaker 1: people have an opinion. I asked you at the beginning
- 14:23Speaker 1: for what you thought. I'd love to hear what you
- 14:26Speaker 1: think now too. Appreciate you guys tuning into College Football Addiction.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Thank God we have football tomorrow and we don't have
- 14:32Speaker 1: to talk about this anymore. We will see you guys
- 14:34Speaker 1: next time. Make sure you are subscribed and take care.
