- 1:17what we were talking about, you know, when
- 1:19we started the week a long time ago.
- 1:22And that is, you know, our decisions of
- 1:26life.
- 1:27And so this is Series 5, Show 8,
- 1:30Episode 7, ladies and gentlemen, it's great to
- 1:32be with you.
- 1:33And we're talking tonight all about living deliberately,
- 1:36not on autopilot.
- 1:38Now, we'll get into what that means, but
- 1:40welcome once again, everyone, to Inspirations For Your
- 1:42Life.
- 1:43I am your host, John C.
- 1:45Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:49podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 1:52a passionate lifelong learner.
- 1:54And ladies and gentlemen, I'm very happy to
- 1:56announce that in just a few months, I
- 1:58will be a published author.
- 2:01Yes, guys.
- 2:02So right now, I just finished, again, I'm
- 2:05not giving you too much, it is a
- 2:07motivational book.
- 2:08And what I want to share with you
- 2:10is I just finished a little while ago,
- 2:14writing Chapter 9.
- 2:16And Chapter 9, just finished the pause and
- 2:19reflect.
- 2:20So one thing I will share with you,
- 2:21let the cat out of the bag, every
- 2:22chapter in the book has a pause and
- 2:26reflect where I give you some questions, I'll
- 2:31give you an activity to do.
- 2:32And then I want you to actually do
- 2:33those things.
- 2:34And so to help you not only embrace
- 2:37the lesson, but actually learn it and do
- 2:39it, which is really important.
- 2:42The book is supposed to come out, looks
- 2:43like it's going to be late May, early
- 2:48June.
- 2:50And yeah, there's a lot in there.
- 2:52But I will tell you this, it's about
- 2:54two things that happened in my life.
- 2:56And also many other stories that I share,
- 2:59that I feel will be very valuable to
- 3:01a lot of you guys.
- 3:02So again, today's episode is titled Living Deliberately,
- 3:07Not on Autopilot.
- 3:10In this episode, I'm exploring how making conscious,
- 3:14intentional choices empowers your life going forward.
- 3:18Now by practicing awareness, and we've talked about
- 3:21awareness before, focus and deliberate action, you can
- 3:24build clarity, confidence and momentum, while at the
- 3:27same time reducing stress and regret.
- 3:30So I've broken this down into a few
- 3:32sections.
- 3:33The first section is section one, power of
- 3:35awareness.
- 3:37Number one is deliberate living, creating freedom, chooses
- 3:42intentionally.
- 3:43And that helps you unlock controls over your
- 3:47life.
- 3:47Because I think a lot of times people
- 3:48get stuck in a box, they get stuck
- 3:50in a corner, they get stuck in a
- 3:53room, and they lock themselves in, they don't
- 3:56know how to get out.
- 3:57And the way they get out is by
- 3:59getting off autopilot.
- 4:00What is autopilot?
- 4:01Autopilot means that everything you do is autonomous.
- 4:05And you just don't seem to have a
- 4:07rhyme or reason for doing anything.
- 4:09Now there's some things you may want to
- 4:10have autopilot on, like, you know, when you
- 4:12finish brushing and doing your, let's say, your
- 4:15breakfast or your meals, you're going to autopilot,
- 4:17you're going to floss and you're going to
- 4:18brush your teeth, great.
- 4:19Those are good little small habits, but your
- 4:21whole day should not be on autopilot.
- 4:23Okay.
- 4:23Another good thing to be on autopilot is
- 4:25when something happens and someone does it to
- 4:27you, to be grateful about that, to be
- 4:29thankful.
- 4:30That's a good autopilot thing.
- 4:32Number two, guys, awareness interrupts autopilot.
- 4:36So that's why I want to be more
- 4:38aware.
- 4:39Noticing patterns prevents mindless reactions.
- 4:43And I said to you guys before that
- 4:45if we are proactive, rather than reactive, we're
- 4:49going to have a much more enjoyable, powerful,
- 4:52and lovely, abundant life.
- 4:54Number three, intentionality builds confidence.
- 4:58So purposeful choices strengthen belief in who?
- 5:02In yourself.
- 5:04But I think sometimes we're afraid that, oh,
- 5:07we're not meant to be purposeful.
- 5:08I'm not that good, right?
- 5:11I'm going to share something I've shared many
- 5:12shows before, and that is, you know, you
- 5:15don't have to be great to start, but
- 5:19you have to start to become great.
- 5:22Let me say that again.
- 5:23You don't have to be great to start,
- 5:25but you have to start to become great.
- 5:28You do not have to be great to
- 5:31start, but you have to start to become
- 5:33great.
- 5:34Number four, conscious choices reduce stress.
- 5:38Clarity of action prevents chaos.
- 5:40And that overwhelming feeling that somehow just kind
- 5:44of sneaks up on us, like, hey, where
- 5:45did you come from?
- 5:47Right?
- 5:47And when we get overwhelmed, it's like we
- 5:49get tired.
- 5:52We might get ornery.
- 5:53We might get angry.
- 5:56We might make bad decisions, okay?
- 6:01Number five, deliberate action builds clarity, focused effort,
- 6:06illuminates priorities, and the next step.
- 6:09This is why I want you to be
- 6:11aware.
- 6:11This is why I want you to know
- 6:12about what's around you, your surroundings.
- 6:15You see, if you just take time to
- 6:17be aware of you and what's around you,
- 6:20it's like the world becomes your oyster.
- 6:23That's important to know, guys.
- 6:25This is not just something I'm saying to
- 6:27you.
- 6:27It's something I want you to live.
- 6:29It's something I want you to have and
- 6:30be part of your life every single day.
- 6:32Number six, guys, awareness creates control, if you
- 6:35didn't hear it before.
- 6:36Knowing your mind directs your outcomes.
- 6:40Now, again, this does not happen the first
- 6:42time you say, oh, gee, I want to
- 6:43become aware.
- 6:45Okay, you're not going to have the epiphany
- 6:46the first day.
- 6:47I doubt it.
- 6:48You're going to need to become aware as
- 6:50a practice.
- 6:52So maybe making an autonomous habit to start
- 6:55becoming aware, that's a good use of autonomous,
- 6:57right?
- 6:58So that you can start becoming aware, and
- 7:00guess what that'll do?
- 7:01That'll kick out the rest of the autonomous
- 7:02stuff.
- 7:03So you'll be able to do that, and
- 7:04that'll be really cool.
- 7:05Number seven, guys, intentional habits build identity.
- 7:11Yes.
- 7:12Repeat choices define who you are.
- 7:16It also sets the stage for who you're
- 7:17becoming.
- 7:19Sometimes people will rain on your parade and
- 7:22say, you can't do this, or you're not
- 7:23this, or you're not that.
- 7:26Don't let other people's choices or their thoughts
- 7:30dictate who you are becoming or who you
- 7:33are right now.
- 7:34I think the main reason a lot of
- 7:35people don't get to the success is because
- 7:37they're too busy listening to the output and
- 7:40feedback of other people that have no business
- 7:44sharing that feedback.
- 7:46Feedback that's going to harm or hurt someone,
- 7:49it's better off to just stay in your
- 7:51head.
- 7:52In other words, to just keep their mouth
- 7:53shut.
- 7:54Number eight, living awake improves outcomes.
- 7:58Now, I don't mean you're sleeping all the
- 8:00time.
- 8:01When you're awake, I mean you're aware of
- 8:04different things.
- 8:05Let's try this right now.
- 8:06I can be aware of the textures of
- 8:10this hat on my head.
- 8:12I can be aware of some of the,
- 8:14let's say, some of the warmth that's coming
- 8:17in because my head is obviously being trapped
- 8:20with this heat.
- 8:22I can be aware right now, there's a
- 8:24ceiling fan above me, of the air that
- 8:26is blowing down on me, and it feels
- 8:28so wonderful.
- 8:30I can be aware right now of how
- 8:33my bottom of my body feels touching the
- 8:36couch, or even aware of how my shorts
- 8:38are feeling on my body, my legs.
- 8:43So these are where even the shirt, and
- 8:45I can feel this right now, it feels
- 8:46a little bit sticky because it's been a
- 8:47little warm, but I can feel that.
- 8:49And I can even feel what it feels
- 8:51like to move my hands.
- 8:54I can also be aware right now, so
- 8:56there's a fan above me, right?
- 8:57And let me pretend that the fan was
- 8:59slowing down, and I was to sit on,
- 9:02I was going to, let's say, take myself
- 9:04and miniaturize myself, kind of like in Honey,
- 9:07I Shrunk the Kids, and put myself on
- 9:08one of those fan blades and just very
- 9:10gently hold onto it, turn it on, and
- 9:12buckle in, and get a nice little ride
- 9:14as it's going around.
- 9:15Kind of an interesting feeling, as long as
- 9:17it's not too fast.
- 9:18All right, guys.
- 9:19So being present multiplies the results, and the
- 9:23more you get the results, the more you're
- 9:24going to want to do it again, again,
- 9:25again, again, again.
- 9:25Number nine, autopilot drains potential.
- 9:29Unawareness limits personal and professional growth.
- 9:32Let me say this again.
- 9:35Autopilot drains potential.
- 9:37Unawareness limits personal and professional growth.
- 9:39Autopilot drains potential.
- 9:41Unawareness limits personal and professional growth.
- 9:43So where do we see autopilot a lot?
- 9:45We see a lot of it in the
- 9:45military.
- 9:47Does that mean it's bad?
- 9:48Well, they want you to be conditioned.
- 9:50They don't want you to be aware.
- 9:51They want you to just act a certain
- 9:53way.
- 9:54And if that's what you're doing, fine.
- 9:55But the rest of us in life, we
- 9:57want to embrace the moments.
- 10:00We want to live life.
- 10:01We want to enjoy it.
- 10:04We want to be aware of things.
- 10:08OK?
- 10:09So autopilot drains potential.
- 10:11Unawareness limits personal and professional growth.
- 10:15Autopilot drains potential.
- 10:18Unawareness limits personal and professional growth.
- 10:21Number 10, guys.
- 10:23Awareness restores agency.
- 10:27Mindfulness empowers conscious action.
- 10:30It restores agency.
- 10:32Awareness restores agency.
- 10:34And mindfulness empowers conscious action.
- 10:38Who knew that our brain was so darn
- 10:40powerful?
- 10:41Who knew that, well, it was a while
- 10:44ago that I wanted to write a book.
- 10:45And I think I told you the true
- 10:46story about this is that I had been
- 10:48working on wanting to do a book since,
- 10:52I'm going to say, I started Inspirations to
- 10:54Real Life, the show, over five years.
- 10:57So basically, it's over four years and, let's
- 11:00say, almost two months.
- 11:02And I started all the prep work for
- 11:04it.
- 11:05But then when it came time to write,
- 11:06it was like, wait a minute.
- 11:08This is going to be tricky.
- 11:09So I said, I need to write something
- 11:11first.
- 11:12One, to prove to myself.
- 11:13And two, to become established as an author.
- 11:16And now I'm looking forward to writing multiple
- 11:19books.
- 11:20Sometimes when you write, you do get stuck.
- 11:24That doesn't mean you're a bad writer.
- 11:27Just means you're stuck in the moment.
- 11:31You might have to just get a little
- 11:32creative.
- 11:33You might have to look at it from
- 11:34a different perspective or close your eyes and
- 11:36come back to it.
- 11:37Number two, guys, momentum and focus.
- 11:40That's so key for success.
- 11:42Number 11, intentional focus creates momentum.
- 11:46Concentrated attention compounds progress quickly.
- 11:50Very similar to the way money compounds in
- 11:52a stock or a bank account.
- 11:55So I don't want you to see momentum
- 11:57as something being heavy.
- 11:59I want you to experience it as something
- 12:01light, fluffy, airy.
- 12:04Something that can lift you up, empower you.
- 12:11Okay, not drain you.
- 12:13Number 12, guys, deliberate living builds strength.
- 12:18Consistent conscious action trains resilience.
- 12:22Now notice I said consistent conscious action trains
- 12:25resilience.
- 12:26I didn't just say action trains resilience because
- 12:29action could happen once, but it may not
- 12:32happen again.
- 12:34Consistent conscious action trains resilience.
- 12:39That's how it works.
- 12:41Consistent conscious action trains resilience.
- 12:45Number 13, awareness improves decisions.
- 12:52Observing thoughts before acting guides smarter choices.
- 12:56So in other words, when you observe something
- 13:00and you notice something, you get this instinct
- 13:05to respond or take an action, not in
- 13:09a hurtful way, but in a playful kind
- 13:12of way.
- 13:13And that playfulness actually opens up, yes, the
- 13:20right side of our brain, the creative and
- 13:24the spatial part of our brain.
- 13:26Although we need the left for the language
- 13:28and the art side, definitely need the right
- 13:31side for the creative and the spatialness around
- 13:33us.
- 13:35Number 14, conscious effort compounds growth.
- 13:41Small deliberate acts multiply over time.
- 13:45You might be kind to somebody one day
- 13:47and say, oh, it didn't do anything for
- 13:48me.
- 13:50Stephen Covey said something a long time ago
- 13:52I wanna refer to.
- 13:53And he said that, we all have an
- 13:55emotional bank account, an EBA.
- 13:58You're not gonna find this at Chase.
- 13:59You're not gonna find this at TD Bank
- 14:02or Columbia or any of the other banks
- 14:05or PNC, et cetera.
- 14:06Because an emotional bank account is something we
- 14:09hold inside us.
- 14:10It's not a physical account.
- 14:11And he talked about the fact that, when
- 14:13we do something good for someone else, it
- 14:17actually makes a deposit in our bank account.
- 14:26And what it does in one way, it
- 14:29makes a deposit, but it actually makes a
- 14:30little withdrawal for what we did kind of
- 14:32like they pay for it.
- 14:33We do it the reverse way.
- 14:34When they do something nice for us, they
- 14:36get deposit, we get a withdrawal.
- 14:38And so it has to be back and
- 14:39forth.
- 14:39Otherwise the account would go negative.
- 14:40So you get my point?
- 14:42So the emotional bank account is kind of
- 14:44like somebody saying, gee, I value you.
- 14:49And we keep track of our own EBA
- 14:51without using papers.
- 14:52We do it with our feelings, with our
- 14:54instincts.
- 14:56Number 15, intentional choices reduce regret.
- 15:00Let me say that again.
- 15:02Intentional choices reduce regret.
- 15:05Intentional choices reduce regret.
- 15:17Now, did you know, if I share this
- 15:19with you about my grandfather, he always said
- 15:22to me, John, measure twice, cut once.
- 15:26Why?
- 15:28Because you can't make it bigger.
- 15:32If it's wire and you cut it, you
- 15:35can't make it bigger.
- 15:37If it's a two by four or two
- 15:39by six and you cut it, well, you
- 15:41can always make it shorter, but you cannot
- 15:42make it bigger.
- 15:44So there, we need to be intentional about
- 15:46the action we're taking before we cut, if
- 15:51that's what we're doing.
- 15:52Or be intentional of what we're doing.
- 15:54Because if we do something that might have
- 15:56a risk, we need to know how much
- 15:59risk is on there because if we put
- 16:01too much out there, well, we might not
- 16:03have anything left to go back to.
- 16:05Number 16, awareness sharpens discipline.
- 16:09Self-observation reinforces focus and follow-through.
- 16:14And follow-through, that's a neat one.
- 16:18And follow-through.
- 16:19So our awareness, it's not just for keeping
- 16:23us calm, it's not just for our breathing
- 16:26technique.
- 16:31Awareness is like a knife sharpener, okay?
- 16:37It sharpens the discipline.
- 16:40Our self-observation reinforces the focus and our
- 16:44follow-through, our commitment that we're making to
- 16:46ourselves to do whatever it is we wanna
- 16:49do.
- 16:50Number 17, guys, deliberate action builds trust.
- 16:55Deliberate action builds trust.
- 16:57Consistency in choices earns reliability from others.
- 17:01Let me say that again.
- 17:02Deliberate action builds trust.
- 17:05Consistency in choices earns reliability from others.
- 17:11So when somebody knows that you're consistent, when
- 17:13somebody knows you're trying to build trust and
- 17:15you keep doing it reliably, they know they
- 17:18can trust you.
- 17:18They know you're somebody they can count on.
- 17:23Number 18, conscious living creates peace.
- 17:28Alignment between thought, word, and action reduces conflict.
- 17:34Conscious living creates peace.
- 17:38An alignment between thought, words, and action reduces
- 17:41conflict.
- 17:42One more time, conscious living creates peace.
- 17:46An alignment between thought, word, and action, which
- 17:50always reduces conflict.
- 17:55Number 19, guys, awareness builds resilience.
- 18:02Observing and controlling reactions strengthens mental endurance.
- 18:08Just observing does this, guys.
- 18:10Just observing and then controlling our reaction, choosing
- 18:16to control our reactions strengthens our mental endurance.
- 18:23That's very powerful.
- 18:24And it's something a lot of people say,
- 18:26oh, you know what, I can't control.
- 18:28And you know, that's wrong.
- 18:30That's being lazy.
- 18:32You can control, but it does take practice.
- 18:37Number 20, guys, intentional behavior creates alignment.
- 18:43Living on purpose integrates values with action.
- 18:48Live on purpose.
- 18:50We naturally integrate our values with the action.
- 18:53We live on purpose.
- 18:55We naturally integrate our values with the action.
- 18:57And it just kind of flows like a
- 19:00river right down.
- 19:18Feel how good that feels.
- 19:21Intention, living on purpose.
- 19:25That's what life's about.
- 19:27All right, the third section is all about
- 19:29strength and clarity.
- 19:31Number 21, and that is deliberate habits build
- 19:34power, repetition of mindful actions, and it reinforces
- 19:39our personal authority.
- 19:43You see, every day we're either building or
- 19:47breaking our personal authority.
- 19:49You might say, John, what do I need
- 19:50personal authority?
- 19:51Personal authority does a couple of things.
- 19:52One, it helps build our confidence.
- 19:54Two, it helps build other people's confidence.
- 19:56And three, it helps other people choose to
- 19:59follow us.
- 20:01Builds friendships and other things too.
- 20:03Relationships, but deliberate habits consistently build power.
- 20:11Repetition of mindful actions reinforce the personal authority
- 20:14that we all have the power to use.
- 20:18Number 22, awareness protects energy.
- 20:23So I wanna tell you guys something very
- 20:25important, and that is this.
- 20:27That is very important.
- 20:29That is awareness protects energy.
- 20:34Focus on what matters and prevent the wasted
- 20:38effort.
- 20:40If you're focused on getting to the top,
- 20:43don't focus on the bottom.
- 20:45Don't focus on the trees.
- 20:46Focus on getting to the top.
- 20:49But you still have to be mindful of
- 20:52the trees that might be in your way.
- 20:55Don't look at other trees that won't be
- 20:57your way or other obstacles.
- 20:58You still have to be mindful of those
- 21:00things, but keep focusing on the top.
- 21:03Awareness protects our energy.
- 21:05Focus on what matters.
- 21:07Prevent the wasted effort.
- 21:08And you will see how much more efficient
- 21:10you are.
- 21:11Number 23, conscious effort stabilizes progress.
- 21:16Deliberate work sustains long-term results.
- 21:20Let me say that again.
- 21:22Conscious effort stabilizes progress.
- 21:26Deliberate work sustains long-term results.
- 21:31Conscious effort, which comes from awareness, stabilizes our
- 21:35progress.
- 21:37Our deliberate work, our actions, will sustain the
- 21:42long-term results.
- 21:43When we get the results, guess what happens?
- 21:46Oh, it's like, hey, I wanna jump on
- 21:48the bandwagon.
- 21:49Great.
- 21:50Hey.
- 21:51They never wanna jump on when the train
- 21:55is in the station or the plane is
- 21:57on the runway.
- 21:59They'll risk their lives to jump on when
- 22:02it's moving a million miles an hour.
- 22:05Number 24, guys, intentional living creates clarity.
- 22:10Consistent mindfulness clarifies priorities and our goals.
- 22:16Consistent mindfulness, or awareness, clarifies priorities and goals.
- 22:23So just being persistent and mindful is
- 22:34a pretty big thing to helping us get
- 22:38to where we wanna be.
- 22:39You know what else is next after that?
- 22:41Showing up.
- 22:42They have to show up anyway, right?
- 22:44Number 25, awareness replaces reaction.
- 22:50Deliberate observation prevents impulsive mistakes.
- 22:54Let me say this again.
- 22:56This is really important.
- 22:57Awareness replaces reaction.
- 23:00Deliberate observation prevents impulsive mistakes.
- 23:05Awareness replaces reaction.
- 23:08Deliberate observation prevents impulsive mistakes.
- 23:13So when we're deliberately involved, when we are
- 23:16consciously aware, mistakes don't happen that often, if
- 23:22at all, because we're in the moment.
- 23:25We're present.
- 23:28And when we're present, it's like we're part
- 23:32of the situation.
- 23:35We're no longer an observer.
- 23:38We're in it.
- 23:40When we become aware, we're not only in
- 23:44the situation, but we're also sensing things that
- 23:47are outside it that could impact it positively
- 23:50or negatively.
- 23:52Number 26, guys.
- 23:54Deliberate choices build confidence.
- 23:57Deliberate choices build confidence.
- 24:00Each intentional decision reinforces our self-belief.
- 24:04When we reinforce our self-belief, you know
- 24:07what we do?
- 24:11We build our character.
- 24:14And when we build our character, it's inevitable
- 24:20that people are gonna notice.
- 24:23Because what we define and what we work
- 24:26on privately shows up publicly because of the
- 24:33character that we're building.
- 24:38Deliberate choices build confidence.
- 24:42Number 27, guys.
- 24:45Conscious living strengthens our identity.
- 24:50Actions aligned with values shape.
- 25:00They shape our character.
- 25:03That's pretty cool.
- 25:06Conscious living strengthens identity.
- 25:09And actions aligned with values shape our character.
- 25:16Number 28, guys.
- 25:17Awareness creates direction.
- 25:21Mindful attention identifies the path forward.
- 25:24It's like when we're aware, somebody has put
- 25:27on this huge LED floodlight and all the
- 25:33darkness that was around us lights up.
- 25:40And our path becomes clear.
- 25:44And each time that we practice awareness, we
- 25:49go from that little nightlight to a bigger
- 25:52light, up to a flashlight, all the way
- 25:56up to a huge gigantic LED floodlight.
- 26:00And when we keep practicing and we put
- 26:02awareness on something, we just keep turning on
- 26:05that big LED floodlight and we get crystal
- 26:08clear vision of where we are and where
- 26:12we're going.
- 26:13There's no longer a worry about, is there
- 26:16a light at the end of the tunnel?
- 26:17Even if there is, I can see the
- 26:19whole darn tunnel through.
- 26:24That's powerful, guys.
- 26:27Number 29.
- 26:30Intentional action builds freedom.
- 26:50You never would think that that's possible, but
- 26:56it is.
- 27:03It's possible when we think about what we
- 27:07can do, okay?
- 27:15What we can do.
- 27:19And that's the magic, guys.
- 27:20Number 30.
- 27:22Living awake changes everything.
- 27:24Presence and deliberate living transforms outcomes.
- 27:28And as I close tonight, living deliberately is
- 27:32about choosing awareness over putting yourself on autopilot.
- 27:36Autopilot might be a lot easier, but you're
- 27:39gonna be able to grow so much more
- 27:41and become more successful when your autopilot is
- 27:43off.
- 27:44Each conscious decision strengthens clarity, confidence, and momentum,
- 27:49allowing you to navigate life with control, reduce
- 27:51stress, and build lasting personal and professional growth
- 27:54by observing your thoughts, focusing your energy, and
- 27:57acting intentionally, you gain freedom, resilience, and alignment
- 28:00in everything you do.
- 28:01Remember, the power of deliberate living isn't in
- 28:04doing more.
- 28:05It's in doing with awareness and purpose.
- 28:07Every moment you live intentionally compounds into long
- 28:10-term success, trust, and clarity.
