Transcript
- 1:16Character would you want representing you if you were on trial?
- 1:20Hello.
- 1:21This is systematic geekology.
- 1:23We are the Priest of the geeks.
- 1:24And we are here for another what's News episode where we talk about all the latest things in geek culture.
- 1:32It's Friday night.
- 1:33We're here to geek out.
- 1:34I am one of your hosts, Kevin Schaefer, here with my fellow geekologist, Evan Garcia.
- 1:40Evan, how are you tonight?
- 1:41What is up, geeks?
- 1:43I'm having a blast this week, getting ready to jump into some the good old classic philosophy and what is it, classic cartoons.
- 1:54So, yeah, I must say, if you want to talk philosophy and Looney Tunes and dc, you are in the right place.
- 2:02Because tonight, you know, we have all kinds of things going on in geek culture, but we're going to focus on first.
- 2:09We're after topics.
- 2:11We're going to do a review of the Coyote vs.
- 2:13Acme, which Evan and I are very excited to talk about.
- 2:17It came out a few weeks ago, but we haven't gotten a chance to do an episode on it yet.
- 2:20So.
- 2:20Yeah, yeah, it's been a minute.
- 2:22And so we're going to talk about that.
- 2:24And then we are also talking about the first five episodes of Lanterns, the HBO series.
- 2:31For both of these, we are going to get in spoilers.
- 2:33So if you haven't seen either the movie or the lantern show and you want to check those out first, feel free to do so and come back.
- 2:41But we are going to get into spoilers here.
- 2:43We'll talk about other stuff as well, but those are kind of our main topics tonight, so.
- 2:48And if you are listening, whether you're on Spotify, Apple podcasts, you're here on YouTube.
- 2:55Hey, we want to welcome you all.
- 2:57If this is your first time, that's especially great.
- 3:01I hope you enjoy us.
- 3:03Hope you don't give us a negative rating.
- 3:05But hey, even if you do, yeah, you know, anything helps if you are like, these guys suck, you know, just like, hey, at least something over.
- 3:14At least.
- 3:14Yes, exactly.
- 3:16At least take some time to rate and review the show, give us your honest feedback because we do appreciate it.
- 3:22Even if it's just a, you know, rant.
- 3:24Even if it's our mom.
- 3:25Laughable.
- 3:26We are.
- 3:27Yes.
- 3:27I mean, like, I, I kind of doubt my mom is going to be.
- 3:31My mom's in Amsterdam right now on vacation.
- 3:34I, I kind of doubt she's going to be watching me talk about Green Lantern and Cairo.
- 3:38Exactly.
- 3:39But you never know.
- 3:40But whoever you are, wherever you are, hey, we appreciate you.
- 3:46You know, if you like the show.
- 3:47Hey, give us a thumbs up.
- 3:49It really does help.
- 3:50And if you want to become a supporter, you can click on the links in the description wherever you're listening or watching and you can find out how to get cool merchandise and really good ways to support the show.
- 4:03That really helps us.
- 4:05And I want to thank one of our financial supporters, James Barrett.
- 4:11Thank you so much for your support of the show.
- 4:14It really means a lot and we hope you will, everyone else will take some time and consider giving us some of that moolah because you know, we are just a humble independent podcast and every little penny, every little
- 4:29contribution helps us.
- 4:31Awesome.
- 4:31Well, Evan, before we get into our main topics tonight, we always start off what's news episodes with a lightning round where we talk about some of the other things we're geeking out on.
- 4:43So Evan, we'll start with you.
- 4:45What's something on your lightning round pick tonight?
- 4:49I, I am getting back into comics and I was going to ask you and some of the other guys like Will and Josh, like, what are some good books to jump into right now?
- 5:04So I've been wanting to do that and I've been, I haven't been, I've been passively listening to things and one thing that I just have found that one of the hosts on the Disney Dish podcast that I follow
- 5:22for, for, for Disney Parks news and stuff, he also does a MCU and a, and a Marvel podcast and he talks about all the news there and he brings his same like a 30 years experience of theme park
- 5:38journalism.
- 5:39He, he brings it over to, to the mcu.
- 5:43So I thought, I thought that was a good surprise.
- 5:47It was a good, was a good find.
- 5:49It's called Marvel US Disney and with Jim Hill and I forgot the co host.
- 5:55But yeah, to check it out if you guys are into that kind of stuff.
- 5:59I mean, you know, I like never follow anything Marvel dc.
- 6:03So I don't know why would you,.
- 6:06I don't know why you would recommend that to me, but no, I'll definitely check that out on one.
- 6:10But I'm curious, what comics have you discovered since getting back into the medium?
- 6:16I want to get back into Star wars legacy.
- 6:18Okay.
- 6:19Yeah, yeah.
- 6:19And my kid, I told him to pick me one, just a random one.
- 6:25And he, and he, and he picked this one.
- 6:27I don't even know what this is.
- 6:30So it looks good.
- 6:31And I have a, I have this.
- 6:34Can you tell me what a run this is for Daredevil?
- 6:38Because I want to get like the whole series.
- 6:40Who's the writer I can't see from.
- 6:41There, the writers are Zdarsky, Garcia Wilson.
- 6:48The Chip Sadarsky run is, like, phenomenal.
- 6:52Right.
- 6:52So you get.
- 6:53I mean, they've got them in big collections.
- 6:56That's what I want.
- 6:57So, you know, in some ways, I would even recommend going back and reading the Charles Soul run before, because the one is excellent.
- 7:06But they're.
- 7:06They're very.
- 7:07The really good thing about the Daredevil comics, like, Modern Wise is like a.
- 7:12There's not really a bad run in recent.
- 7:15Sure.
- 7:15But, like.
- 7:16But they're pretty connected, and they also have, like.
- 7:20What I like is it's all following one story, but each writer kind of brings their own unique flavor to it.
- 7:28So, like.
- 7:28So Charles Soule brings legal background to it.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33Saul is great.
- 7:33And I mean, because he was a paralegal for a long time, he brings the legal background to his writing there.
- 7:39And then Zdarsky brings a lot of the religious themes to it, so he really zeros in on Matt Murdock's Catholicism.
- 7:48But those really good.
- 7:50So the Saul run was first.
- 7:51Before that, it was Mark Waid, which is great, too.
- 7:55But I would say the Solon Zdarsky ones in particular are pretty linked, but you can get both of them in hardcovers and trades.
- 8:05That's what I want on the Marvel.
- 8:06App, because I like to.
- 8:09I'm trying to do a social media cleanse, so I just need to sit down with a good book and chill.
- 8:16Yeah.
- 8:17So, bro, I'm with you there.
- 8:18It's just getting so exhausting being on.
- 8:21Like, it is, like, to an extent, I have to.
- 8:24Like, to an extent, I have to stay on for work and, like, connectivity.
- 8:27But beyond that, I'm just, like.
- 8:29This is just sucking my time and.
- 8:31Energy, especially the way that I tend to be online.
- 8:34It's kind of.
- 8:35Yeah, I should have.
- 8:37I should have taken this break a long time ago.
- 8:39Yeah, bro, that's a great.
- 8:41I mean, hey, comics is a great substitute.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:43You know, I mean, I did it.
- 8:44About 10 years ago when.
- 8:46When I did my last kind of break.
- 8:49Yeah.
- 8:49I mean, just say goodbye to your bank account, but other than that, you know, you're good.
- 8:53All right.
- 8:54All right.
- 8:54But excellent picks there.
- 8:56Cool.
- 8:56Yeah.
- 8:57Yeah, that.
- 8:58That's a good one for me.
- 9:01I've actually.
- 9:01So I guess I think I brought it up with Christian on a recent episode that I did a complete rewatch of Breaking Bad this year, and then now I'm on to Better Call Saul, and I'm, you know, plowing
- 9:11through it because I Mean, I love it, but, like, it was.
- 9:15It started.
- 9:15I mean, I watched Breaking Bad like, years ago in college and then seen episodes in there.
- 9:21And I actually, I've never gone all the way through Better Call Saul.
- 9:24I had watched like, some of the earlier seasons, and for whatever reason, I just like, you know, like, didn't get back into it.
- 9:30And now I'm absolutely hooked.
- 9:33But.
- 9:33But yeah, it kind of started because earlier in the year, a friend was over and had never seen Breaking Bad and so started watching the early episodes together and then.
- 9:42And then he got hooked.
- 9:43And then that just got me back into it.
- 9:46And I was like, how many seasons is that again?
- 9:48The Breaking Bad is five seasons, and then Better Call Saul is six.
- 9:52But I'm already on season four of Better Call Sa.
- 9:55It's just been a.
- 9:56Like, you know, I'll be like, I'll do another episode.
- 9:58I'll do another episode.
- 10:00It's just, you know, I mean, but I mean, just phenomenal show.
- 10:03And I think what I mean, because it will, especially toward the end of Breaking Bad, it get as amazing as it is, it becomes very draining.
- 10:12I mean, it's kind of the intention.
- 10:13It gets so dark and depressing.
- 10:15Right.
- 10:16But what I like about Better Call Saul is not that it's any less dramatic, but it also brings a delightful dark comedy and loudy to it.
- 10:26And like, every time Bob Odenkirk is on screen, it's like, I love the supporting cast, so it really blends the dark noir and the black comedy really well.
- 10:37So it's not all doom and gloom.
- 10:39I mean, it's still, you know, where it's headed and, you know, it's like, gotta, you know, be heartbreaking, but at the same time, it's wildly entertaining.
- 10:48So, yeah, so I'm loving it.
- 10:50But, yeah, so that's been my, like, going back and.
- 10:52And especially since Vince Gilligan just won another Emmy for Pluribus and Ray Seehorn won as well.
- 10:58I'm really happy there because I loved Pluribus.
- 11:01Sounds like it'll still be some time before we get to season two.
- 11:04Wait a minute.
- 11:05Hey, I, you know, Pluribus.
- 11:08Are you talking about that video game?
- 11:10No, this is the Apple TV series that came out last year.
- 11:13It's the same but complete.
- 11:16Completely separate from the video game.
- 11:18But like, it's a Vince Gilligan created show where Racy Horn, who played Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, she's the lead in it.
- 11:27And it's basically the premise is that this worldwide virus happens and bunch of people Die.
- 11:35But the ones that are left are, like, overly happy in this artificial, manipulative way.
- 11:41Except for this one woman.
- 11:43Like, she's like, not.
- 11:44It's like she's not infected.
- 11:46And so she's just like, you're all crazy.
- 11:49And she's trying to figure out a way to end it, but.
- 11:52And she manages to find a few other people like her, but they become complicit because they're like, hey, everything's fine.
- 11:58Like, they basically surrendered to the apocalypse.
- 12:02Sorry, I'm.
- 12:02I know I'm going way off topic here, but it's also a great show you should watch.
- 12:05All right.
- 12:06Yeah, yeah.
- 12:07So that's.
- 12:08But even Skelligan won a writing award, an Emmy for it, and then Racy Horn won Best Actress in a Drama, so I was very happy about that.
- 12:17But.
- 12:18Yeah, so doing a deep dive into the Vince Gilligan universe here, and I'm loving it, but.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:23What else has he done?
- 12:25The name sounds familiar.
- 12:26Well, I was at Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
- 12:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:30Well, okay.
- 12:31Well.
- 12:31And then otherwise.
- 12:32Well, I mean, everything.
- 12:33I mean.
- 12:34Well, I mean, Breaking Bad, Brother Call Saul and El Camino, I mean, that took up like, 15 years of his life.
- 12:39Sure.
- 12:40Before.
- 12:40Before that, he did.
- 12:42He actually did co write that you never.
- 12:44That Will Smith movie, Hancock.
- 12:47Yeah, yeah, yeah, he co wrote that.
- 12:50And then he was an act.
- 12:51He was an X Files writer before he created Breaking Bad.
- 12:54But.
- 12:55But between Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and.
- 12:57And El Camino, I mean, that was, you know, 2008 through 2022.
- 13:03All of those were going, wow.
- 13:05Yeah.
- 13:05So, yeah, Pluribus was a.
- 13:07Yeah, Pluribus premiered last year, and that was his first show not in the Breaking Bad universe.
- 13:12You know, I credit.
- 13:15And I've heard some other people do it, too.
- 13:17I credit Breaking Bad as the show that brought us into the.
- 13:23To our streaming age that we are in now.
- 13:26Oh, 100%, because.
- 13:28Because, sure, the show was popular, but when AMC put it on to Netflix, it exploded.
- 13:36It exploded.
- 13:37So, yeah.
- 13:38And that was how it was for me.
- 13:39I mean, I say it when I binged it in college on Netflix, and then I did watch the final season as it aired.
- 13:46But other than.
- 13:47Oh, I was exactly into that.
- 13:48But yeah.
- 13:49Yeah.
- 13:49So, yeah.
- 13:50Crazy.
- 13:51Awesome.
- 13:51Well, well, great lighting, graphics, and.
- 13:55Yeah.
- 13:55Let's get on to our main topic.
- 13:58So, first one, I'm very excited to talk about Coyote versus Acme.
- 14:02This is the recent not Warner Brothers flick because Warner Brothers screwed up and tried to cancel this movie and bury it.
- 14:11But thankfully, another Studio came in and picked it up, but Cardiff, me.
- 14:17I mean, what do we say?
- 14:18Best movie of the year and just leave it at that?
- 14:21Next.
- 14:21Yeah, yeah, next.
- 14:24No, but.
- 14:25Oh, but I really did love this movie.
- 14:28Before we get into the movie itself, Evan, what's kind of your background with Looney Tunes characters in that universe?
- 14:34Oh, that.
- 14:36Some of my earliest memories are waking up from a nightmare in the middle of the night and turning on Cartoon Network when I'm like, five or six years old, and here's a coyote chasing a roadrunner.
- 14:50You know, it's like this stuff is.
- 14:52Is ingrained in my.
- 14:54In my psyche and.
- 14:56Yeah, just the whole.
- 14:58The whole slew of characters, you know, so on the.
- 15:03The reruns, technically, because there was already like 20, 30 years of it before it got to me.
- 15:09So.
- 15:09Yeah, that's how I.
- 15:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:12It was somewhere.
- 15:12Me.
- 15:12I mean, all the.
- 15:13Oh, yeah.
- 15:14I mean, the Cartoon Network.
- 15:15Because, I mean, when we were kids, it was like the three big were.
- 15:18Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network.
- 15:20Yeah.
- 15:21I kind of watched, like, different things on each one.
- 15:23I mean, I wasn't, like, 100% loyal to one network, and those were like, you know, my trilogy of cartoons and live action, you know, all of the stuff.
- 15:34Yeah, my trinity.
- 15:35My holy trinity.
- 15:35Exactly.
- 15:37As a kid.
- 15:37And so.
- 15:38So, yeah, no, I mean, Looney Tunes reruns and then Scooby Doo and all that.
- 15:42So, yeah, I mean, it granted it before going into this movie.
- 15:46It had been a minute since I had delved into those cartoons, all that.
- 15:49So I was like, you know, coming back with not a cyclopedic knowledge or anything.
- 15:57In the same way.
- 15:58I know DC and Marvel, but still, I mean, I remembered a lot of the shorts and stuff growing up.
- 16:05There was just that feeling and that style of animation that was really formative to so many.
- 16:11And Tiny Toons.
- 16:13The.
- 16:15Yes, the.
- 16:16I think they had a.
- 16:17A Star wars special that.
- 16:20I think it's either that or Star Tours at Disney is my first.
- 16:25Is my first ever Star wars content, so.
- 16:27Really?
- 16:28Okay.
- 16:29Yeah.
- 16:29So I saw it before I even knew what Star wars was.
- 16:33I was like, huh, interesting.
- 16:35And then.
- 16:36And then when I saw Star Wars, I'm like, oh, this is what it was.
- 16:40Parody.
- 16:41This is what the parody was.
- 16:43Parodying.
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:43I was like, no way.
- 17:44Okay, see, that's interesting because, like.
- 17:47Well, and that's also.
- 17:47I imagine there are probably more people with that experience today more than ever.
- 17:53Like, I've seen a parody.
- 17:55It's Star wars or.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:57Or something else that they've seen all the parodies before.
- 18:00They've actually seen the original source of material.
- 18:03You know, I mean, so that's interesting.
- 18:06But.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:07So Coyote versus Acme.
- 18:10Well, yeah, so I mentioned a little background.
- 18:12This was.
- 18:14They'd been in development for a long time.
- 18:16It was.
- 18:17The initial concept was inspired by a satirical New Yorker article from the late 90s.
- 18:24And then James Gunn, originally based on a true story, went through.
- 18:29Right, right.
- 18:29Oh, I love that.
- 18:30Oh, that's why the.
- 18:31The tagline there was perfect.
- 18:33But, yeah, James Gunn had pitched it originally, went through different writers and drafts, and then.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40And then it was being developed finally and.
- 18:43And made by Warner Brothers.
- 18:44And it got all the way through.
- 18:46And then, lo and behold, Warner Brothers, you know, during a major merger, wrote it off as a tax write off.
- 18:54The Lake of Time canceled the movie.
- 18:56Yes.
- 18:56And, you know, I'll leave it to listeners and viewers to determine why a major corporation would try to cancel a movie that is about taking down a major corporation.
- 19:08But, you know, it was pretty obvious.
- 19:11Yes, yes.
- 19:13But at the same time, it kind of bit right back in their face.
- 19:17Because then.
- 19:18Actually, Evan, while I'm talking, do you mind looking up the name of the studio that ended up buying this?
- 19:22Because I'm blanking on that.
- 19:25Catch up.
- 19:25That's right.
- 19:25Yeah.
- 19:26I got to Entertainment, came in, bought it, and saved it.
- 19:29And, you know, I mean, it was a miracle that someone came in, swooped it, and taped it.
- 19:34I thought it would.
- 19:35Yeah, I thought at most it would get, you know, just a.
- 19:38A niche streaming release, but this got a full theatrical release.
- 19:42And I.
- 19:42When I heard that, not only that, I was like, yes, it's just like, you know, suck it, Zaslav.
- 19:48But, you know, like, like, but.
- 19:53But also, you know, God's theatrical.
- 19:56And not only that, but it's done so well critically and commercially.
- 20:00It has.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:01And that's.
- 20:01Yeah, yeah.
- 20:02I mean, I.
- 20:03When I saw it, there was a good amount of families there in the theater.
- 20:06I heard a lot of buzz about it.
- 20:08Yes, it was.
- 20:09It was really cool to see.
- 20:10So that's the background.
- 20:12Evan, do you want to give just a brief synopsis of what the movie is about?
- 20:16Sure.
- 20:17So it's like you said, it's kind of based on a.
- 20:21A real article and a downbeat lawyer, a very small town, small stakes lawyer, is taking on some cases, and he mistakenly takes on a case from Coyote, and it's a case against the acne products that have failed him
- 20:46throughout the years and caused him damage from.
- 20:51From trying to Catch the Roadrunner.
- 20:54So he's trying to file case against them and he goes to.
- 20:58I forgot his first name, but his last name was Avery, I think.
- 21:03And he.
- 21:06Yeah.
- 21:06And then hilarity ensues from there and he reluctantly takes the case and then he learns and he grows from it and.
- 21:15And then poof.
- 21:17John Cena's a jackass.
- 21:19And yeah, I think John Cena loves playing jerk characters like he is, especially because he has, he has a reputation as being like the nicest guy in real life.
- 21:29And so I think he loves playing villains.
- 21:31Seeing him doing the press for this and how he toes the party line on like, hey, yeah, I get what the company tried to do with this, but I'm glad it's coming out.
- 21:41And he is so professional and I have some mad respect for the dude.
- 21:45Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 21:47Yeah, yeah.
- 21:47And I, I wasn't Will Forte's character named Kevin.
- 21:52It might be.
- 21:53Yeah, it was, it was, it was Kevin.
- 21:55His last name was.
- 21:57Was.
- 21:58Was Avery, though.
- 21:59And I was waiting for that to be a text.
- 22:02Avery reference.
- 22:04Yeah, but I didn't hear it or I didn't see anything, but I don't know.
- 22:08So.
- 22:09Yeah, yeah, but that was.
- 22:11Yeah, yeah.
- 22:12And then I'm just getting this like, just so before I talk.
- 22:15So, yeah, directed by Dave Green and then screenplay was by Sam.
- 22:20Sammy Burch.
- 22:22Yeah, I just want to get the creative team here before start talking.
- 22:25But yeah, no, I mean, the writers on there.
- 22:29No, no, you're good, you're good.
- 22:31There was actually there were several.
- 22:32Because it went through several Jazz.
- 22:33But.
- 22:33But Sammy Birch was the final.
- 22:35While I wrote the final screenplay.
- 22:38But so I came out of this movie and I was like, that was the best legal thriller I've seen in a while.
- 22:44And then, and then I had friends texting me who saw it like the next day.
- 22:48They're like, I don't know about you, but that was the best rom com I've seen in a while.
- 22:51I'm like, that's fair too.
- 22:54It kind of it because it does an unexpected, really emotional and, you know, tear jerking storyline between of all characters Coyote and Roadrunner.
- 23:05And then also the relationship between Coyote and Will Forte's character, Avery.
- 23:11There's just like this amalgamation of things.
- 23:14And yeah, there's so many things I love about this movie, but I think, you know, we've seen obviously other live action animation hybrids with the Looney Tunes.
- 23:22So who Framed Roger Rabbit being the most famous.
- 23:26And then, you know, Space Jam was very iconic for our generation.
- 23:30But I think this One like, I mean, Space Jam will always hold a nostalgic, you know, place for me.
- 23:36But I would venture to say if I watched it now, it wouldn't be that good, other than, like, you know, have some fun memories.
- 23:42The sequel wasn't good?
- 23:44No, the sequel looked terrible.
- 23:45I never even saw it like that.
- 23:47Look, that looked awful.
- 23:48But this one, though, it never sacrifices anything like it.
- 23:55It always prioritizes telling a good story.
- 23:58It's never, you know, just like, oh, how many nostalgic callbacks can we cram in here?
- 24:03Or, you know, fungate.
- 24:04Like, it respects its audience.
- 24:07Like, so this was the biggest thing, too, is I texted a friend who, like, he took his whole family to it, and his daughter is like, six.
- 24:14And I was like, how did she respond to.
- 24:17Because I was really curious what kids thought of this movie.
- 24:19Because, you know, again, like, I love that, but I'm like, this is a legal thriller.
- 24:23There's, like, you know, there's a scene where some of the Looney Tunes characters are in an asylum.
- 24:29Like, I mean, there's all.
- 24:30There's a lot going on here.
- 24:32And I'm like, how is this?
- 24:34Like, how did it come across?
- 24:35Kids and he said his daughter loved it.
- 24:37Like, they, like, it was both funny and, you know, it's not dumbed down for kids, but it's, you know, digestible also.
- 24:47But that's the thing.
- 24:48The script was just so smart, so well executed, and, you know, it did a great job with the, you know, Looney Tunes gags that you expect.
- 24:58And also making them funny, too.
- 24:59Like, they were really funny moments that weren't, you know, cheap or anything.
- 25:03But it never loses sight of its emotional storytelling.
- 25:08And that's a lot to say for, again, a Looney Tunes live action animation hybrid.
- 25:13But this was probably one of the best written movies I've seen this year.
- 25:17Yeah.
- 25:17Yeah.
- 25:19So, you know, I mean, I'm thinking, like, some of my favorite.
- 25:22Well, okay, so looking at Will Forte's character, you know, Kevin, like Evan was saying, is this just, you know, downbeat lawyer?
- 25:30He's the epitome of.
- 25:32He doesn't want to succeed or climb the corporate ladder.
- 25:35He takes these very easy cases because, you know, there's allusions to, you know, he had a past as some big shot but had continually failed.
- 25:48Now he's just given up.
- 25:50And John Cena's character is the opposite, is the, you know, VP at this major law firm, which Foghorn from Looney Tunes Universe is his boss, which I found hilarious.
- 26:02But, you know, John Cena's character and Will Forte's had gone to law school together, but now they're rivals.
- 26:09But Will Forte comes in with no ambition.
- 26:12And of all clients, Coyote is the one who, you know, gets him out of his slump and, you know, gets him on a case that changes him forever.
- 26:23He also has his niece there working at the firm, and it turns into this just great legal thriller, underdog story.
- 26:30And also, again, all the elements of the relationships.
- 26:34And.
- 26:35And I mean, this is another thing about Coyote is such a complex character here because, like, you know, for someone who never speak word.
- 26:44Yeah.
- 26:44Without speaking.
- 26:45Like he.
- 26:46With limited science.
- 26:49Yes, yes.
- 26:50Because, like, okay, he starts out thinking like, okay, he wants to take down the ACME Corporation for all the damages to him over the years.
- 26:58But.
- 26:59But then he has this vendetta against Roadrunner and he's willing to manipulate Kevin in order to sabotage Roadrunner and everyone else.
- 27:09And, you know, he's a bit of an anarchist, but, you know, but he's also.
- 27:13We find he's willing to change.
- 27:14And the.
- 27:15Again, the moment where Roadrunner says in the courtroom, again, spoiler.
- 27:20But toward the end where he says, like, oh, I always liked you as you're my friend and everything, and like.
- 27:26And Coyote just burst into tears.
- 27:28I'm like, that got me as a.
- 27:29Like an adult man sitting in the theater.
- 27:32I was like, I was not expecting that we were friends to be an emotional.
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:36It was just such a brilliant piece of writing where it wasn't, you know, forced or anything.
- 27:41It came across so organically.
- 27:43It was good.
- 27:45Yeah.
- 27:46But it.
- 27:47This was just.
- 27:47I mean, there were so many different layers to the story.
- 27:52The animation is spectacular.
- 27:54Of course, we have to talk about that.
- 27:56I love how.
- 27:57I mean, again, like, who Framed Around Traffic is like the classic, you know, in this kind of thing.
- 28:01But this one, I feel, like, bridged the classic Looney Tunes style of animation with a modern sensibility to it.
- 28:09And it was vibrant.
- 28:10It was eclectic.
- 28:11I was really engaged with all of the more action sequences and the comedic takes and.
- 28:17And.
- 28:18And the humans felt like.
- 28:20It never felt out of place for the humans to be that right alongside all of the cartoon characters.
- 28:25It just worked so well and it was so fluid.
- 28:28It was.
- 28:29Reminded me of the classic even.
- 28:32Even Mary Poppins.
- 28:34It's just like.
- 28:35It just felt so natural.
- 28:37Natural.
- 28:37And, Evan, did you have any favorite scenes or moments?
- 28:40Like, either or more dramatic?
- 28:43It's been minutes as I've seen it, but sure.
- 28:47But I kind of.
- 28:50The part where.
- 28:51What was it the part where, like, he.
- 28:54Where Where Coyote crams everything into that.
- 28:59A file box and then he sneaks it into that just kind of stuck with me.
- 29:05It just like that.
- 29:06Like, just.
- 29:07It was such a beautiful way to take a typical cartoony Looney Tunes trope of, like, great things just kind of fitting into something very small and.
- 29:19And kind of being the crux of the whole film.
- 29:21I thought that was perfect.
- 29:23So, yeah, I like to.
- 29:25When.
- 29:27So when.
- 29:28When Coyote does get, well, I would say reluctantly, he basically kind of, like, manipulates Wilfort's character into taking the case.
- 29:39And now, like, Kevin is just, like, begrudgingly is stuck with them.
- 29:45And when he takes him to the motel that he lives at, that the, like, really.
- 29:49Down by the motel when he's trying to check him in and the receptionist is saying, oh, we don't allow pets here.
- 29:56Like, I love that scene.
- 29:58Yes.
- 29:59And then he becomes a lawyer.
- 30:02Like, he.
- 30:03He steps up and defends a coyote, and a coyote's like, oh, okay.
- 30:09I mean, you know, like, I was talking about Better Call Saul earlier.
- 30:12That literally reminded me of Better Call Saul.
- 30:15There you go.
- 30:16Like, this was a Jimmy McGill type scenario where he's having to, like, utilize his lawyer skills and his charisma to work his way through and get himself out of his situation.
- 30:28So I.
- 30:29I loved.
- 30:29And.
- 30:30And again, the.
- 30:31The animation and the way it was directed there was great, but that was one of my favorites.
- 30:37Yeah.
- 30:38And that.
- 30:39New Mexico.
- 30:40A motel and.
- 30:42Yes.
- 30:42Yeah, I'm gonna say that Vince Gilligan and Bob Godenkirk had some kind of secret advisory role in this movie.
- 30:49I don't know.
- 30:50Or.
- 30:50Or at least they were.
- 30:51They inspired it.
- 30:56Yeah.
- 30:56Yeah, exactly.
- 30:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:58I mean, hey, the script went through multiple drafts, so who's to say they didn't have a hand in it?
- 31:04But that was kind of.
- 31:06And that was kind of of a knock on it for me.
- 31:08It's like I could tell there were some.
- 31:11I could tell that there was too many cooks in the kitchen.
- 31:14I was just like, but that's fair.
- 31:17But I was able to, like, I was able to look past it because I wanted it.
- 31:24I wanted it to be the film that I wanted to support.
- 31:27So.
- 31:28But yes, I did notice that kind of.
- 31:31I could strongly.
- 31:33I could tell where.
- 31:34Where, Where.
- 31:35Where it turned into Act 3 and Act 2.
- 31:38I was like, oh, okay.
- 31:39This is a little clunky, but sure, yeah.
- 31:41I mean, I was never bored in the movie, but I agree there was a lot of moving parts, and it seemed like it.
- 31:47Different writers had pitched different ideas.
- 31:49They're like, let's see how we can make it all work and cram it all in here.
- 31:53And, I mean, that's fine.
- 31:54I mean, again, I still think it was a really smart, clever script.
- 31:57And there was never a point where I felt like, you know, oh, this was too much or excessive.
- 32:02But I do.
- 32:03I do think that you could tell that this was a writer's room kind of movie.
- 32:08And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 32:10Like, I mean, usually too Many Cooks in the Kitchen has a complete, you know, range of styles, and it's just a, you know, a mess.
- 32:19But here it still came across.
- 32:21I mean, there was a clear arc and.
- 32:22And I think that was what.
- 32:24As much as there was going on, the focus remained on both Coyote and Kevin changing throughout the movie.
- 32:33So, like, Kevin goes from this, like, downbeat, given up, like, you know, living in a lousy motel lawyer to, you know, he's gained.
- 32:43I mean.
- 32:44I mean, he loses the case at the end, but he still.
- 32:47He was willing to sacrifice it all to try and, like, you know, actually puts it, he was willing to fail instead of retreat.
- 32:56And that was like, the big push point for him.
- 32:59And then for Coyote, he learned, you know, he goes from this willing to manipulate anyone around him to get to his end goals to, oh, realizing that I'm not alone either.
- 33:10Like, I have people who actually care about me, and I, you know, can.
- 33:15Can help others too.
- 33:16It was a problem.
- 33:17And it's not that, like, either of those arcs are anything revolutionary, but their way they were handled was brilliant.
- 33:24Mm.
- 33:25Yeah, sure.
- 33:25And the whole.
- 33:27And kind of like, what the.
- 33:29What the poster is alluding to here, the whole.
- 33:34The whole Sisyphus idea of it all, that was.
- 33:37I was not expecting that.
- 33:39And that whole thing about, like, hey, like, sure, your life can go in circles, but it's your perspective.
- 33:47Like, one must imagine Coyote and a roadrunner friends.
- 33:52So, so, sure, you.
- 33:56You might be spinning in circles, but.
- 33:58But you should think of your goal upward and kind of focus your priorities as a positive way.
- 34:06So I was just like, wow, I was not expecting that to come out of this at all.
- 34:11So, no, there were so many moments where I'm like.
- 34:15And again, the.
- 34:16The.
- 34:16The Looney Tunes in the asylum scene, I was like, okay, this is a kids movie throwing this out in there.
- 34:23That's when I got me in the theater.
- 34:25I was just laughing.
- 34:26I was like, you know, but.
- 34:27But again, it was.
- 34:29The whole movie pointed to the evils of late stage capitalism and megacorporations.
- 34:35And I'm like, hey, if this is the way, let's send this message to kids.
- 34:38Like, megacorporations suck and go fight for the little guy.
- 34:42Yeah, exactly.
- 34:43It did not pull punches whatsoever.
- 34:46No, no.
- 34:47It did not hide that fact.
- 34:49So I have a question for you.
- 34:52What did you think about the inclusion or the lack of inclusion of the main characters?
- 34:59Kind of like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Dog and stuff like that?
- 35:03I was okay with it, honestly.
- 35:04I mean, there were, like, cameos, but, like, I think it would have been forced if they had tried to, like.
- 35:10I mean, we were talking about, like.
- 35:12Yeah, there would have been too many things like that, I think.
- 35:14Could have been, like, you know, a writer really pushing for them to have some, like, big arc and big kind of thing, you know, I mean, and I think this was not their movie, and that's okay.
- 35:25You know, like, I mean, you don't need to force Superman and Batman to every D.C.
- 35:31story, and you don't need to force Iron man and Spider man and.
- 35:36And the Avengers and everyone else into every Marvel story.
- 35:39Like, same goes here.
- 35:40So this was very much like Coyote and Kevin's movie and Coyote Roadrunner and then the actual preparation of the villain.
- 35:48So I think it worked better to have cameos and nods, but to focus on other characters and not get distracted from the main narrative.
- 35:56So I was.
- 35:57I was like.
- 35:57I do commend them for, like, not forcing anything there.
- 36:01While it's always fun to see, you know, the big, heavy headers when they're not.
- 36:05This is a good lesson for other storytellers out there of, like, you don't have to force a character in just for nostalgia sake or, you know, to give for fan service.
- 36:18Like, you know, you do whatever is in service of the story.
- 36:23So I.
- 36:23I thought it had just enough references throughout to the larger Looney Tunes universe.
- 36:28Yeah.
- 36:29Yeah.
- 36:29And then the ending was great, too.
- 36:31Like, what?
- 36:31I mean, like, well, the beginning of the.
- 36:33The whole.
- 36:33The professor story and all of that.
- 36:36Like, you know, the professor story.
- 36:38And then what are the.
- 36:40The.
- 36:41The scientists, like, at the beginning that, like, they had gone missing, Like.
- 36:46Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:50Yep, yep.
- 36:51Okay.
- 36:51Like, him getting reunited.
- 36:53Yeah.
- 36:54Again, you see other characters throughout, but no, I.
- 36:56I liked that it was.
- 36:57Yeah.
- 36:58Not just a big, you know, Looney Tunes ensemble.
- 37:02It felt very much in this universe, but it didn't waste time with, you know, unnecessary side quests and stuff like that.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:10So I enjoyed it, but.
- 37:11Yeah, but one thing that.
- 37:14That I did, and I took the time to look at the voice actors Here.
- 37:19Oh, yeah.
- 37:20If.
- 37:21If you've ever done any voices, you probably worked on this film and everybody was on pretty much.
- 37:28It was.
- 37:28Yep.
- 37:29The huge names and everything.
- 37:30So that was pretty cool to see that.
- 37:32And that's the other thing too is like, I really love when animated movies use actual voice actors for it because I get.
- 37:40The trend I get sick of is when they have just celebrities headlining, you know, an animated movie when they're not professional voice actors.
- 37:48Like, I mean, like I said, well, when we were watching the trailer.
- 37:50It's all Disney's fault there.
- 37:52Yes.
- 37:52Oh, it is 100%.
- 37:54Like, I mean, because, like, there was a trailer for like this sci fi animated movie.
- 37:59Maybe it's from DreamWorks or what, I can't remember.
- 38:01But.
- 38:01But it was with Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez.
- 38:04And I'm like, no diss to either of them, but neither of them are voice actors.
- 38:09My thing with that is, okay, kids are not going to anime movie because Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez are in it.
- 38:18Same with Chris Pratt as Mario.
- 38:20They're going to see Mario.
- 38:22They're going to see.
- 38:23I know this is a total side rant, but it's this Trend I am 100% sick of.
- 38:27So another thing I praise this movie for Train is higher.
- 38:31Actual voice actors to headline these movies.
- 38:34Because the.
- 38:35The kids are going to go regardless.
- 38:38They're not going for the names and same way, I mean, the parents are not going for the name because they don't care about that.
- 38:44Like they're taking their kids to see a movie.
- 38:46You know, I just.
- 38:47Yeah, again, side rap.
- 38:49But needs to be said because, you know, do more.
- 38:52Literally everything about this movie is something every Hollywood studio can learn from when they're developing more kids movies.
- 38:59Write smarter scripts because kids are not dumb.
- 39:02Hire voice actors, hire good animation talent and just focus on telling good stories and don't dumb it out.
- 39:09So end of sermon.
- 39:10But that's my, you know, my message for today.
- 39:13That's ironic that you say that because.
- 39:16Because my son, he is eight and like I said on a previous episode, like, we took him to the Odyssey and he loved it.
- 39:24Like, he wants us engaged with the whole film for three hours.
- 39:28This one, he fell asleep the first 10 minutes.
- 39:32Okay, okay.
- 39:33Well, your son's boy, he's graduated from some of that.
- 39:36But, like, it was a long day, I guess.
- 39:38Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:39Did your daughter see it?
- 39:41No.
- 39:42She is in that stage where she doesn't want to get out of the house.
- 39:45Gotcha.
- 39:46Gotcha.
- 39:46That makes sense.
- 39:47Yeah.
- 39:47But yeah, I mean, when it comes to streaming, I want to show my niece and nephews because I'd be curious what their thoughts are.
- 39:52But, yeah, awesome.
- 39:55He is hyped to see more classic Looney Tunes, so, yeah, sure, sure.
- 40:02He got him into it, so it's.
- 41:16A good starting point.
- 41:17Nice.
- 41:17Nice.
- 41:17Yeah.
- 41:18Sweet.
- 41:19Well, great discussion here.
- 41:22And now let's get on to our next topic.
- 41:24So DC Studios and hbo.
- 41:26Max's Lanterns again, we're recording after the first five episodes have premiered, so we still got three episodes to go this season.
- 41:38But we are going to get into spoilers for the episode so far.
- 41:42Evan, are you caught up on episodes right now?
- 41:46I am, I am.
- 41:47I've seen.
- 41:48Excellent, excellent.
- 41:49I've seen episode three and the last one twice, so.
- 41:54Okay, perfect.
- 41:55Perfect.
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:56Great.
- 41:56So what?
- 41:58We haven't really just.
- 41:59I can't remember though, last time, I think the pilot had just dropped and we discussed that a little bit.
- 42:03But what are your overall impressions of the series so far?
- 42:07I am in love with it and I love the fact that it's a delivering on what it said that it was going to be.
- 42:15It's.
- 42:16It's a true detective cop thriller with Green Lantern at its core.
- 42:23And it is.
- 42:25It's a delivering in spades.
- 42:27It's.
- 42:27It is.
- 42:29The writing, the directing is phenomenal and.
- 42:34But I also kind of understand the gripe that I think it was on a previous episode.
- 42:42I think it was Andy saying that it kind of stinks because a kid can't watch this one.
- 42:49And I was like, yeah, he's.
- 42:50Yeah, he is right.
- 42:52It's like, even if it's a smart kid, there are some highly inappropriate content here.
- 42:59So.
- 43:00So, yeah, so.
- 43:01But I love it.
- 43:04And I love it for the fact that that episode four, it gave it.
- 43:11It gave the.
- 43:13The Disney theme park community a huge shout out by.
- 43:18By mentioning the.
- 43:20The topic of the weenies.
- 43:24And I could not believe it.
- 43:25I was like, they went there.
- 43:27Like, the writers know what's up.
- 43:29I was like, they are my people.
- 43:31They are my people.
- 43:32I was like, nice.
- 43:34So if you watch or listen to.
- 43:36I'm loving it.
- 43:37Yeah.
- 43:37If you watch or listen to the companion podcast that's on hbo, they taught.
- 43:42The writers talked about that too.
- 43:44It was a great.
- 43:45Yes.
- 43:45Yeah.
- 43:45Yeah, I love that.
- 43:46Yeah, I saw that.
- 43:48It's awesome.
- 43:48This.
- 43:50This.
- 43:50This podcast is fantastic.
- 43:53It really is.
- 43:54I have to give it a shout out.
- 43:56Straw hat Goofy.
- 43:57Yeah.
- 43:57Yes.
- 43:58I have to give it a shot because, like, that podcast What I love about it, because when it, when a podcast is produced by the same network that is producing the show, it could easily turn into a PR
- 44:09fest.
- 44:10And it's not at all like.
- 44:11What I love is the, the host of that Green.
- 44:15Yes, the juju Green.
- 44:17The host.
- 44:17He's.
- 44:18He's fantastic and he asks really intelligent questions to each guest.
- 44:23So he's had on cast members, writers, directors, and it's a really insightful conversation.
- 44:30Each episode I like.
- 44:31I've looked forward to the podcast each week as much as I have the show.
- 44:35That's fairly, that's what I love.
- 44:36But so definitely a shout out there, but.
- 44:39But not for me.
- 44:39I'm so, I'm really loving the show.
- 44:42You know, I mean, I shared my thoughts on the overall like, you know, in previous episodes of like, I knew always it was going to be a true detective show because that's what they had pitched it as originally.
- 44:53So like, I already knew all about that.
- 44:54So I was not alarmed when they dropped the first teaser and there was like not really any Green Lantern mythos in that, you know, teaser.
- 45:02I was like, guys, this is kind of what they said it was going to be.
- 45:05And then, you know, they revealed more as they drop more teasers and you know, I really enjoyed the first episode, really enjoyed it throughout.
- 45:12And I would say, you know, and I will.
- 45:14And we talked about it on that about like, it's not that.
- 45:18So like, I'm okay with this being an adult oriented series, but I do hope that DC Studios does provide a mixture of adult content and kids a little bit more.
- 45:30Yeah, I do want them to do either a show, pretty good show, either live action or animated that I could watch with my niece and nephews because so far the offerings have not been, you know, kid friendly and
- 45:42that's okay.
- 45:43But I do, I do want to see some, some range there.
- 45:47But this series, no, I mean, I've been loving the mystery.
- 45:51The cast is phenomenal.
- 45:53It's extremely well written, I would say so if I have any criticisms.
- 45:57Mainly relates to like, I thought a lot about this week's episode because as exhilarating as it was, it got me thinking about a couple things.
- 46:05So, you know, the.
- 46:07I, I do not mind the true detective atmosphere and execution of this series at all, but there.
- 46:14And it's fine to not make a traditional superhero show.
- 46:18We have enough of those.
- 46:19That said, there's still.
- 46:21There were moments throughout the first five episodes where I'm like, okay, if I was writing this or if I had any, like, you know, feedback.
- 46:28I would do this little, just to like, scratch that itch for a little more superhero stuff mainly if I.
- 46:34What I would have liked to see so far is in the cold opens.
- 46:38I wish they had done some flashbacks with Hal because at this point we've only seen Hal as this kind of like, you know, kind of grumpy curmudgeon who does not want to give his ring to anyone else.
- 46:53He's very cocky and how in the comics is cocky?
- 46:58I think Kyle Chandler brings a different sensibility to him here and he brings his own unique characterization.
- 47:05But I've seen a very cocky Hal in a very reckless one in the comics plenty of times before.
- 47:12But I think going back to what they could have done to balance the true detective grounded aesthetic with some of the more superhero shenanigans, I, I would have just liked maybe at least one episode that started off with
- 47:27a 10 to 15 minute, even just 10, 5, 10 minutes or whatever.
- 47:31Like a cold open where you get to see Hal in his prime.
- 47:35Because I think that would have been.
- 47:37Episode is coming up.
- 47:38Scratch the itch.
- 47:39And I, I, I knew that maybe we've still got three episodes to go.
- 47:42So.
- 47:43And I, I mean, I'm kind of thinking it we, because we don't know from the content of the series, we don't know a ton about how like we.
- 47:50And, and I do think that especially if it jumps into the 2026 timeline, I think we are going to see more of that.
- 47:58So that's why, you know, this again is just based on the first five episodes, but also looking at this week's episode specifically.
- 48:06So we got to see a lot more Green Lantern stuff here.
- 48:09This was, you know, everything was leading up to this with the Manhunter, it was Zoe and then Anton's and his force coming to a collision in the Nebraska town.
- 48:25And also Hal and John being there.
- 48:27But there were a couple things here.
- 48:29So we get some big, great action set pieces.
- 48:32But also.
- 48:33So a big core tenet of Green Lantern is like you can do anything with the ring and you can make all this cool stuff.
- 48:41And we haven't seen a ton of that.
- 48:43And I was expecting more of that here.
- 48:45Even though Hal is not the most creative, like when he typically just does shields and stuff, there still was an opportunity to do like make some cool, I mean, make a tank or make a, I don't know, like,
- 48:56I mean, more than just like force fields and stuff.
- 48:59There was an opportunity to do more visual, more things interesting from a visual lens in this episode that I Think was a little bit of a waste of opportunity.
- 49:08Um, but the other thing.
- 49:10So in this episode, there's a couple things to consider.
- 49:12Okay, so how.
- 49:14And John.
- 49:15Well, first off, at the beginning.
- 49:17Okay, I get that, you know, there.
- 49:19How Is willing to leave John behind.
- 49:22He's not letting him have the ring, but leaving him to burn there in the car.
- 49:30That was a bit of a stretch for me.
- 49:31And again, to your point, I do hope we're going to learn more about Hal in the next few episodes to justify, like, why he would.
- 49:39Because I don't see him.
- 49:41I mean, unless I.
- 49:43There's a context missing and we need to know more.
- 49:47I don't see him as the kind of guy yet who would be willing to just like, diss his partner and like nearly kill him because he would have been killed if the.
- 49:55If Zoe hadn't saved him.
- 49:57That was a big issue for me.
- 49:59And then also that Hal and John choose to have what is essentially their big dick measuring contest and beat the crap out of each other.
- 50:07Right.
- 50:07And do it in the hotel room.
- 50:11Not in a calm moment at all as innocent lives are being taken and the whole town is falling apart.
- 50:16Did they really need to have this, you know, punching each other fast now, you know, and it just seems like for two characters who I get, they're human and the tension between them has been boiling from day one.
- 50:30But I would, I, I again, I need more context for Hal, especially to see that he would be willing to put aside his duty in this moment.
- 50:42Now granted, Hal has done infinitely worse things in the comics because I just.
- 50:47So as the show's been coming out, I've been going through some of the old ones and I just read the Emerald Twilight series for the first time, which.
- 50:55This is the series where base just for context.
- 50:58So Coast City is destroyed in the aftermath of Cyborg Superman.
- 51:04This was in the 90s when after death of Superman.
- 51:07And so Cyborg Superman goes on the stage and so Hal.
- 51:11Hal is devastated and he pleads with the Guardians to help him rebuild.
- 51:16And the Guardians say no because the Guardians are kind of dicks.
- 51:19And.
- 51:20And he.
- 51:21Hal loses it completely.
- 51:23And.
- 51:24But not only goes off the Guardians, he goes after the entire Green Lantern Green Lantern corpse and he kills some of his closest friends and.
- 51:31And then this leads to him being replaced by Kyle Rayner.
- 51:35So it's a.
- 51:36It's a while it was the 90s, it was wild.
- 51:38And that led to him becoming Parallax.
- 51:40I'm not saying he's to that level now.
- 51:43That was, you Know, the most extreme he had ever been.
- 51:47But in the show, again, I'm just not as convinced, just based on these first five episodes that he would be willing to, you know, risk John's life to keep the ring and then for them to fight while innocent
- 52:05lives are being lost.
- 52:06But again, that.
- 52:08These are the main questions I have going into the final episodes.
- 52:12What's your take on how from episode three and how he's portrayed?
- 52:17I mean, yeah, like, you know, I did really love that episode because I think it gave a great insight into John's story.
- 52:24But.
- 52:24Yeah, but.
- 52:25But, yeah, I mean, the fact that he, like, kind of like, could it stand John from day one and he was not open to the idea of an apprentice.
- 52:34Like, and, you know, the people were going to, like, he said to him, you know, you're going to take the ring off my.
- 52:40Over my dead body.
- 52:41You know, like, I mean, so, I mean, oh, the arrogance there is very readily apparent, but I still need to know a little more why he is that gung ho about it and why.
- 52:54I mean, like, it's one thing to not, you know, take be like a Batman and, you know, just like, oh, I'm not a team player.
- 53:02I'm not going to, like, let anyone take my job.
- 53:05That, you know, that's understandable.
- 53:07But to, you know, be willing to kill him and also, you know, fight him while they're in mission mode, that was more where I'm like, okay, I hope we get a little more context and exploration of this in
- 53:23the coming episodes.
- 53:24Yeah, yeah.
- 53:25So still, I mean, still a great episode, but that was the only thing I've been thinking about.
- 53:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:31And we have three episodes, so.
- 53:34Yeah, yeah.
- 53:35Oh, and again, the performances, Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are phenomenal.
- 53:39Aaron Pierre, like, I mean, I rewatched Rebel Ridge recently, which I know is one of Andy's favorite movies.
- 53:44Great movie there.
- 53:46And.
- 53:47Yeah.
- 53:47So, I mean, I love the conversation between them.
- 53:49But, yeah, now I'm really.
- 53:51Now that the Nebraska.
- 53:53The Russell arc is over, at least in this timeline.
- 53:58I.
- 53:58Yeah, I'm really curious where the final episodes go and what we're going to see here.
- 54:03Yeah, but I'm pretty sure we will see a House Entered episode for sure.
- 54:10And we will see him and him and a Sinestro together.
- 54:15I.
- 54:16I'm pretty sure we will see that context and see what happened there.
- 54:19No, I agree.
- 54:19I'm just like, I.
- 54:20At this point, I'm like, give it to me now.
- 54:22I'm ready for it.
- 54:24But, oh, the other Thing I was gonna ask you about.
- 54:26So what did you think about?
- 54:28Because, like, I saw some commentary on this, and I, like, don't know how to feel where, like, okay, like, Zoe comes in.
- 54:37Is the man under.
- 54:37I mean, she takes the form of this.
- 54:42This woman, and they have a conversation about race in the last episode.
- 54:47And I'm like.
- 54:47And I mean, this is just a review I read earlier, but.
- 54:51But there.
- 54:52But there is a review I heard earlier that was like, is the message here being said that, like, oh, you know, outsiders can come in and ruin the idyllic lives of, like, this small town?
- 55:03I don't know.
- 55:03I mean, there's quite.
- 55:05I'm not saying it's that, but there's a lot of, like, themes raised, and I don't really know exactly what the show is trying to say, and I was curious what your thoughts were there.
- 55:15Yeah, this show is saying a lot about minorities.
- 55:20I can see that.
- 55:22Like, episode three was a masterclass in empathy for the black experience.
- 55:29Now, whether people accept that or not, that's on their problem.
- 55:33But that's what that episode was.
- 55:35That was a showcase of what the black people have to live through.
- 55:40But then a couple episodes later, like you said, it shows the Manhunter as a immigrant parallel and coming and kind of.
- 55:51Kind of.
- 55:52Kind of faking the town and.
- 55:55And basically taking advantage of a town and.
- 56:00And basically ruining it.
- 56:02So it's just like, yeah, what are we saying here?
- 56:05It is just interesting, though.
- 56:07Yeah.
- 56:07Because.
- 56:08Because she is a woman of color and of.
- 56:13Of Indian descent.
- 56:15Maybe so.
- 56:16And they say that.
- 56:18That it is the best way to infiltrate a town is to.
- 56:24Is to become the one with the least power.
- 56:28So I thought that was super interesting, to say the least.
- 56:32No, I mean, these are.
- 56:35That's what I love about the show, though, is it does raise so many questions.
- 56:39It's incredibly well written.
- 56:41And, yeah, there, like, there are times where.
- 56:43Yeah.
- 56:44I'm still not sure exactly what it's trying to say or how I feel about this, but I like that it's still lingering in my mind, and I.
- 56:50And that there's still three episodes to go where I can really make a full assessment.
- 56:55But, yeah, that's kind of where I'm at right now is, like, still loving it, still going, but I'm like, I have these questions that I hope will get answered and.
- 57:03And, you know, kind of make my.
- 57:04I have the same questions, but I like to remember that this is a.
- 57:11This is a David Lindelof, a thing.
- 57:15He doesn't necessarily give the answers that you may want when the show's over.
- 57:21So.
- 57:22And I mean, I don't think it's.
- 57:24Going to be a very clean cut now I have yet to see.
- 57:27I gotta check that out.
- 57:28The Watchman series is incredible.
- 57:30Yeah.
- 57:30Yeah, that's it.
- 57:31But no one, it's three big cooks of like Damon Lindelof, Tom King and Chris Mundy, like, so they all bring those senses.
- 57:38That's.
- 57:38But that's where Lindelof and King, I think both do that a lot where they.
- 57:43Sometimes they ask more questions and provide answers and.
- 57:47Yeah.
- 57:47And I mean, sometimes that can lead to really great storytelling.
- 57:50But yeah.
- 57:51So overall, I mean, I'm still really loving the show.
- 57:53Cool.
- 57:54Really excited to see where it goes from here.
- 57:56But.
- 57:57But awesome.
- 57:57So, yeah.
- 57:58So I.
- 57:59I know we are coming up at the end of the hour, but Evan, before we go, do you have a recommendation for viewers and listeners out there?
- 58:08Either of something we discussed tonight or something totally different?
- 58:12Sure.
- 58:12I say if.
- 58:15If the weenie talk from Lanterns kind of peak your.
- 58:19Your order interest.
- 58:22Check out the Disney Dish podcast.
- 58:25They are the two of the Al Hos have been doing theme park news and a commentary for about 40 years now.
- 58:33And they are.
- 58:35They are a good place to start if you want to get into the theme park and the Disney community with a podcast.
- 58:42Excellent choice, I think for me since we just talked about Tom King and you're getting back into comics, one you definitely have to read is his Mr.
- 58:52Miracle series that he did with Mitch Garrett.
- 58:56And this one actually really delves into mental health.
- 58:59It's one of the best comics he's ever made and he's actually developing it as an animated series for DC Studios.
- 59:07That's I think coming out next year.
- 59:09But Mr.
- 59:09Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Garage.
- 59:12Absolutely phenomenal series.
- 59:14Awesome.
- 59:14Well, Evan, this has been fantastic.
- 59:16I always love doing what's news episodes with you.
- 59:19I know we could go on forever, but.
- 59:21But we do have to go geek it on more stuff so we can make more episodes.
- 59:25So.
