- 0:10Speaker 1: God bless football, Mikey A.
- 0:14Speaker 2: God bless football, Taylor.
- 0:17Speaker 3: God bless football, Stu Gatz.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Not nearly as excited as I expected him to be.
- 0:20Speaker 1: My team lost last night.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Who's your team?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Pats.
- 0:26Speaker 4: That's right. Matt Collins is best friend. That's how he determined.
- 0:29Speaker 3: But he's on IR right now.
- 0:31Speaker 4: So why root for him?
- 0:32Speaker 2: The IR is your best team now.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I really don't care if we're being honest.
- 0:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 0:35Speaker 1: If he's truly a friend, you'll want, you know, when
- 0:37Speaker 1: Mac is out, you want the Patriots to lose because
- 0:40Speaker 1: it increases Mac's importance to the team.
- 0:41Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yeah, but we need those playoff bonuses.
- 0:45Speaker 4: What do you mean we? He gets them, not you.
- 0:48Speaker 3: We're a team here.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Can you get Mac on the show to see if
- 0:53Speaker 1: Mac indeed thinks you guys are a team, a tandem?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Well, we have to meet him in person. He said
- 0:58Speaker 3: he doesn't go on Zoom shows.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Enough.
- 1:01Speaker 6: Mac's been on the show when Taylor and I interviewed
- 1:03Speaker 6: him at Radio Row.
- 1:05Speaker 3: When we took an hour and a half bus to
- 1:07Speaker 3: San Jose.
- 1:08Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We only had to travel over 3,000 miles to meet
- 1:12Speaker 1: his friend, Mac Collins, on.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Media day at the Super Bowl. Why?
- 1:17Speaker 2: I said it then.
- 1:17Speaker 6: I did not think that they were close the way
- 1:20Speaker 6: Taylor said. And then I saw Mac's reaction to seeing Taylor.
- 1:23Speaker 2: They're that close.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We will get to Stu Yagatz. Field Yates is going
- 1:29Speaker 1: to join us. As well, looking forward to that. We
- 1:31Speaker 1: had an argument during Stugatz and Company about Caleb Williams
- 1:36Speaker 1: and Ben Johnson and who's more important to the Bears' success.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I don't want to have that now, but I am
- 1:41Speaker 1: just telling you we will ask Field Yates about it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Have to.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Later in this episode of God Bless Football. And again, Stu,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you got some coming off an 8-3, guys. College football,
- 1:51Speaker 1: an 8-3.
- 1:51Speaker 2: It's a good week.
- 1:53Speaker 4: It is a good week, yes.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But Taylor has a game here of who says no.
- 1:58Speaker 1: As we head into a big football weekend, college and NFL.
- 2:02Speaker 4: So, Taylor, take it away. That porn music.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's more porn than the last one.
- 2:12Speaker 4: This is definitely. You know what? My friend told me.
- 2:14Speaker 4: He sent me a text. He was listening.
- 2:16Speaker 1: He said, Mikey deserved a raise for calling you.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Out on what you thought was porn music.
- 2:24Speaker 3: This sounds like Austin Powers almost. Like the spy who
- 2:27Speaker 3: shagged me.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I can hear it. I hear porn.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Tomato, tomato.
- 2:34Speaker 2: You always hear porn, apparently.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Well, when I watch football, it's like watching porn.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Now there's something I can get by. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 2:42Speaker 3: So my who says no this week revolves around the
- 2:45Speaker 3: Philadelphia Eagles, and I'm going to bring this up to
- 2:47Speaker 3: field when we have field on. But Saquon Barkley is
- 2:50Speaker 3: expected to play with his hamstring injury against the Cowboys.
- 2:53Speaker 7: Yep.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But if the Cowboys beat the Eagles and the Eagles
- 2:57Speaker 3: fall to 2-5... Who says no? A second and third
- 3:02Speaker 3: round pick to Philadelphia, Saquon Barkley goes to the Minnesota Vikings.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So you have the Vikings picking up the phone when
- 3:10Speaker 1: Howie Roseman calls. That's something no one should do. It
- 3:14Speaker 1: means he's about to fleece you.
- 3:16Speaker 3: But if he starts dangling like a carrot, instead of
- 3:19Speaker 3: a carrot, it's Saquon Barkley, and you're like, oh, my God.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's always hurt.
- 3:23Speaker 1: The Vikings are fine without Saquon Barkley. Mikey, do you
- 3:27Speaker 1: think the Vikings say no? A second and a third.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I don't think they say no.
- 3:33Speaker 6: I think that's the kind of player that would make
- 3:36Speaker 6: their offense run that much better because he's one of
- 3:39Speaker 6: those guys that even though he's been a little bit
- 3:42Speaker 6: slower lately.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He's a guy you have to worry about at all times.
- 3:45Speaker 3: So, Stu, you say the Vikings are fine without Saquon Barkley.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I mean, they're undefeated.
- 3:49Speaker 3: They're 5-0. But I think if you're Minnesota, you have
- 3:52Speaker 3: a legitimate reason to sacrifice draft capital to improve a
- 3:56Speaker 3: glaring weakness where the Minnesota Vikings, these are some of
- 3:59Speaker 3: their rushing stats, 3.8 yards per carry, 21st in the NFL,
- 4:02Speaker 3: 28 rushing first downs, 28th in the NFL. 23rd in
- 4:08Speaker 3: rushing EPA per play, just nine missed tackles forced by
- 4:12Speaker 3: their running backs, fewest in the NFL. It feels like
- 4:15Speaker 3: the Vikings are winning despite having a rushing success, and
- 4:18Speaker 3: if you bring in somebody like Saquon Barkley, maybe that
- 4:20Speaker 3: helps out offense where Kyler Murray is asked to do
- 4:24Speaker 3: a lot.
- 4:25Speaker 4: All right, I'm not saying they don't need a running back.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm just saying I'd prefer a more durable running back,
- 4:29Speaker 1: more of a sure thing for a second and a
- 4:31Speaker 1: third round pick.
- 4:32Speaker 4: That's all I'm saying.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor might cost you a one, though.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'd be more inclined, and I understand what Taylor is saying.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Vikings have a window. Go for it right now. This
- 4:42Speaker 1: is a glaring weakness on the team. I'd be more inclined,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I think, to give up a first for Jonathan Taylor
- 4:47Speaker 1: than I would a second and a third for Saquon.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I know it sounds crazy, but.
- 4:51Speaker 3: What do you think about the Philadelphia aspect in this?
- 4:53Speaker 3: Because it feels like Philadelphia has already gotten everything that
- 4:56Speaker 3: they could have wanted out of Saquon Barkley when he
- 4:59Speaker 3: helps them win a Super Bowl. And if Philadelphia, now
- 5:02Speaker 3: with the news that Jalen Hurts is going to be
- 5:04Speaker 3: out for the season... If Philadelphia is headed for a
- 5:06Speaker 3: true reset on their roster, why are you holding on
- 5:10Speaker 3: to a 29-year-old running back whose trade value is only
- 5:13Speaker 3: going to decline over time?
- 5:14Speaker 4: I understand. I'm just saying.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I love the idea of Philadelphia hitting a hard reset.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yes, I understand that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But when Howie Roseman calls you and offers you Saquon Barkley,
- 5:25Speaker 1: there's a good chance to damage goods.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I'm just saying. Just saying. Don't pick up the phone
- 5:31Speaker 4: when he calls. Anyway.
- 5:32Speaker 3: So if you guys don't think Minnesota... Let's say Minnesota
- 5:35Speaker 3: says no in this situation and Harry Roseman is hell-bent
- 5:39Speaker 3: on getting some kind of assets back for Saquon Barkley.
- 5:42Speaker 3: He calls up Seattle. And Seattle says... Does Seattle say
- 5:47Speaker 3: no in this deal?
- 5:47Speaker 4: I think Seattle's already... They do. Yeah, they've shown... They
- 5:50Speaker 4: say no. Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 6: Seattle told you what they think about the running back
- 5:54Speaker 6: position when they.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Let Kenneth Walker.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:58Speaker 6: And now they drafted a guy in the first round.
- 6:03Speaker 2: They're getting Zach Charbonnet back.
- 6:05Speaker 6: They are not going to now trade draft capital for
- 6:08Speaker 6: a big contract at the running back position.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Mikey, I get what you're saying, that they showed what
- 6:12Speaker 3: they thought about the running back position when you let
- 6:14Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker walk, but that could also be Seattle kind
- 6:17Speaker 3: of admitting, hey, we kind of made a mistake here
- 6:19Speaker 3: because our offense has taken a nosedive since we let
- 6:23Speaker 3: him walk, and we don't really have a running back
- 6:25Speaker 3: position to replace that kind of production.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Well, they do have their running back. He gets healthy
- 6:30Speaker 4: this weekend. Let's see how that looks, right?
- 6:32Speaker 3: Charbonnet?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Charbonnet should play this weekend.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Sounds like a fancy wine. It does. Put it on
- 6:36Speaker 4: the poll. Does Charbonnet sound like a fancy wine?
- 6:39Speaker 3: I'll take the Charbonnet.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Would you like a glass of Charbonnet?
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think Seattle likes Charbonnet so much that they were
- 6:48Speaker 1: willing to let Kenneth Walker walk.
- 6:50Speaker 6: Can we get the one-table guy to say Charbonnet?
- 6:53Speaker 7: Sure.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Also, Jadarian Price, too, when Jadarian Price comes back.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you're really hell-bent on Saquon Barkley going somewhere. We're
- 7:00Speaker 1: just telling you what we think. It's who says no,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and I'm telling you I think the Vikings say no.
- 7:04Speaker 4: That's all.
- 7:06Speaker 3: What about Houston Texans?
- 7:07Speaker 4: They might say yes.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Or you give C.J. Shroud an elite back. Take some
- 7:12Speaker 3: of that pressure off the passing game. But the problem
- 7:14Speaker 3: with the Houston Texans, it's like it feels like they
- 7:16Speaker 3: already made their move trading for Marvin Harrison Jr. So
- 7:20Speaker 3: now you're doubling down on the capital that you're giving up.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yes. Texans are fine. That defense needs to play better.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I mean, it just does, right?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Can I throw one at you guys?
- 7:31Speaker 5: Okay.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Who says no?
- 7:33Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 7:35Speaker 6: The Chargers call the Jets. And they say, listen, this
- 7:39Speaker 6: just isn't working out. You give us two of your
- 7:44Speaker 6: top first-round picks this year. The Jets have three.
- 7:46Speaker 4: For Herbert.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And a second-round pick. We give you Justin Herbert. Who
- 7:50Speaker 2: says no?
- 7:50Speaker 1: So Mike McDaniel, offensive genius, John Harbaugh, they couldn't make
- 7:54Speaker 1: Justin Herbert the quarterback that we all think that he
- 7:57Speaker 1: could be.
- 7:57Speaker 4: And you think the Jets are going to be able
- 7:58Speaker 4: to do it?
- 8:00Speaker 2: I don't, but I'm wondering who says no.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I think the Jets say no pretty fast there.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Justin Herbert says no. Begs. Bleeds. What does he care?
- 8:14Speaker 4: If I'm going to be bad at this, can I
- 8:16Speaker 4: do it in L.A.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Being bad in New York isn't that bad.
- 8:22Speaker 3: It's worked out well. It's the only reason we know
- 8:25Speaker 3: Cam Scadaboo, really.
- 8:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I think the Jets say no just because of the
- 8:30Speaker 3: draft capital that they have this year. It feels, I
- 8:33Speaker 3: don't want to say unprecedented, but it feels like they're
- 8:36Speaker 3: in such a great spot where the Cowboys are struggling,
- 8:39Speaker 3: the Colts are struggling, the Jets are going to struggle
- 8:41Speaker 3: on their own. The Jets don't need the Jets' help
- 8:44Speaker 3: to struggle. Those are potentially, Mikey, three top 15 picks.
- 8:50Speaker 3: And I don't think you have to be desperate to
- 8:53Speaker 3: make a move for somebody like Justin Herbert.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Although it would be nice if a quarterback failed at
- 8:58Speaker 1: the place they were drafted at and turned out to
- 9:00Speaker 1: be great with us.
- 9:03Speaker 4: As opposed to the other way around. I don't think
- 9:08Speaker 4: it's going to happen. It would be a nice change.
- 9:10Speaker 4: That's all I'm saying. Anyway, do you have another one?
- 9:14Speaker 4: I don't. Okay.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Taylor?
- 9:17Speaker 3: No, the only other team that I had mentioned was
- 9:20Speaker 3: the Green Bay Packers trying to get Saquon Barkley. But again,
- 9:23Speaker 3: they have Josh Jacobs coming back. And, you know, LeFleur
- 9:26Speaker 3: came out with that statement saying, I think Josh Jacobs
- 9:30Speaker 3: has learned from his mistakes.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Yes.
- 9:33Speaker 3: He's extremely remorseful. I do believe he's a good person.
- 9:36Speaker 3: I think LeFleur went a little over the top with
- 9:38Speaker 3: his statement. The only reason Josh Jacobs... He's getting a
- 9:41Speaker 3: second chance because he averages four yards to carry.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Let's put it on the ball.
- 9:46Speaker 6: Is that kind of like Robert Sala saying, hey, I
- 9:48Speaker 6: know this guy went to go get a gun against
- 9:50Speaker 6: his teammate.
- 9:51Speaker 2: But like 31 teams give me a call. I'll tell
- 9:54Speaker 2: you how good of a person he is.
- 9:56Speaker 3: If you're JC Latham in that situation who was. the
- 10:00Speaker 3: apparent target when he goes to his car when you
- 10:04Speaker 3: hear Salah saying Salah ranting and raving how he's such
- 10:07Speaker 3: a great person you're kind of like coach do you
- 10:09Speaker 3: have my back.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Here yeah I don't think so I.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Mean he can be a great person and still.
- 10:18Speaker 2: You know Go to get a gun against his teammate.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you there.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Are you saying they're– well, to use against a teammate.
- 10:25Speaker 4: That's where you got me. I was going to say
- 10:26Speaker 4: there are great people who also have guns. O.J.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Simpson, great person. Use the knife, allegedly.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I can't believe we're still talking about that trial.
- 10:40Speaker 1: All right, picks coming up next, and then Field Yates
- 10:45Speaker 1: will argue about Caleb Williams. It is time for this
- 10:50Speaker 1: week's edition of Steelya Gotts, all lines courtesy of our
- 10:53Speaker 1: friends over at FanDuel and the FanDuel Sportsbook. We'll start
- 10:56Speaker 1: with college, of course. Eight and three a week ago. Mikey,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I felt like I was picking too many games. I
- 11:01Speaker 1: had 11 games. Turned out to be my best week.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Of the year. Eight and three.
- 11:07Speaker 2: You're going to double down, aren't you? Yes, I am.
- 11:09Speaker 4: You know I am. Of course I am.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Let's get started here with Michigan. They're taking on Indiana.
- 11:14Speaker 1: It's at home, plus 7.5. Indiana coming off that loss
- 11:18Speaker 1: to Ohio State a week ago. I think this is
- 11:20Speaker 1: where it falls apart for Kurt Cignetti. They just needed
- 11:25Speaker 1: a loss. They got it at Ohio State, and now
- 11:27Speaker 1: things start to unravel for an Indiana team that I
- 11:30Speaker 1: don't think is very good. Michigan is plus 7.5. Buy
- 11:33Speaker 1: it up to 8. Michigan wins the game outright. They
- 11:36Speaker 1: win by 4 points. over Indiana. LSU minus six and
- 11:41Speaker 1: a half at Auburn.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Buy it down to six. I think this is one
- 11:45Speaker 4: of those spots.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I know Auburn just beat Alabama, but an opportunity for
- 11:49Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin to say.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Hey, you know what? We beat that team that beat Alabama.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And therefore, they're going to take this game very seriously,
- 11:56Speaker 1: try to blow them out, and they will.
- 11:58Speaker 4: LSU wins.
- 11:59Speaker 1: They cover LSU by 10 points over Auburn. Northwestern, they're hot.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Top 25, minus.
- 12:06Speaker 4: 16 and a half.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Buy it down to 16. They're taking on a dreadful
- 12:09Speaker 1: Rutgers team. Northwestern wins. They cover Northwestern by 24 points
- 12:14Speaker 1: at home.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Oregon.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Minus 9.5 at Illinois. Illinois not very good. Oregon has
- 12:21Speaker 1: to be better. I think they will be. Buy it
- 12:23Speaker 1: down to 9.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Take Oregon. They win. They cover. Oregon by 14 points
- 12:28Speaker 4: on the road.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Mississippi plus 3.5 at Texas. Buy it up to 4.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Why is Mississippi not favored in this game? They have
- 12:36Speaker 1: the best player on the field. I think Mississippi wins
- 12:39Speaker 1: the game outright. They win by a touchdown over Texas. Kentucky,
- 12:43Speaker 1: minus 10.5. Take it on Vandy. Buy it down to 10. Kentucky,
- 12:47Speaker 1: sneaky good team, but not so sneaky anymore.
- 12:50Speaker 4: They win. They cover.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Kentucky by 17 points over Vanderbilt. USC, minus 2.5 at Wisconsin.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Buy it down to 2. Take SC.
- 13:01Speaker 4: They win. They cover. They win by 10 points on
- 13:04Speaker 4: the road.
- 13:04Speaker 1: UNC, some would say the hottest team in the country,
- 13:08Speaker 1: minus 9.5. Buy it down to nine. Take the Tar
- 13:12Speaker 1: Heels over Syracuse. This is more of a bet against
- 13:15Speaker 1: Syracuse than it is on North Carolina. I like the
- 13:18Speaker 1: Heels here to win by 17 points at home. And finally,
- 13:21Speaker 1: Houston plus six and a half at Utah. Utah wins.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Houston covers. Buy it up to seven. Utah by a
- 13:28Speaker 1: field goal. Let's go to the NFL. I was two
- 13:31Speaker 1: and three a week ago. We'll start with the Bengals
- 13:33Speaker 1: here at the Ravens. Bengals plus one and a half.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I love Cincinnati. You know I love Joe Burrow. Therefore,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm taking the Bengals.
- 13:41Speaker 4: They win.
- 13:41Speaker 1: They cover the Bengals by 10 points over the Ravens.
- 13:45Speaker 1: The Vikings, Kyler Murray, minus six and a half. Take
- 13:48Speaker 1: it on the Colts. Buy it down to six and
- 13:51Speaker 1: take the worst 5-0 team in NFL.
- 13:53Speaker 4: History, the Vikings. They win.
- 13:54Speaker 1: They cover the Vikings by 13 points over the Colts.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Mikey will hate this. Jets minus four and a half
- 14:02Speaker 1: against the Dolphins.
- 14:04Speaker 4: It's at home. The Dolphins are bad. The Jets are so-so.
- 14:07Speaker 1: When a so-so team takes on a bad team, I
- 14:10Speaker 1: go with a so-so team.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Ridiculous. Buy it down to four. Take the Jets. They win.
- 14:15Speaker 4: They cover.
- 14:15Speaker 1: The Jets by ten points over the Dolphins. Giants plus
- 14:19Speaker 1: ten and a half. They're at the Texan, J.J.
- 14:22Speaker 4: McCarthy.
- 14:23Speaker 1: This game's going to be a lot closer than people think.
- 14:25Speaker 1: The Texans will win it. The Giants will keep it close.
- 14:29Speaker 1: The Texans by four. I'm taking the Giants plus ten
- 14:31Speaker 1: and a half. 49ers, best team in football. Traveling across
- 14:36Speaker 1: the country, they take on the Falcons. They're up and down.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It's minus two and a half. I love the Niners here.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I think the Niners win by 14 points on the
- 14:45Speaker 1: road in Atlanta. The Panthers, America's team, our favorite team.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Minus two and a half. They're taking on the Bucs
- 14:53Speaker 1: and Baker Mayfield and that chip on his shoulder. It's
- 14:56Speaker 1: going to take Baker a minute to get right. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: like the Panthers here. Minus two and a half.
- 15:01Speaker 4: They win.
- 15:01Speaker 1: They cover the Panthers by ten points over Tampa Bay.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And finally, big game of the weekend. The Chiefs at Seattle.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Plus two and a half. I'll take the Chiefs getting points.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Buy it up to three. Kansas City going to win
- 15:15Speaker 1: the game outright.
- 15:16Speaker 4: The Chiefs win. They cover. They win by ten points
- 15:19Speaker 4: on the road. Those are the picks, everyone. Good luck.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Stugatz here. Welcome to your most rewarding season ever, only
- 15:30Speaker 1: on FanDuel. How rewarding are we talking? More rewarding than
- 15:34Speaker 1: a touchdown with time expiring? More rewarding than an 18-point comeback?

- 17:05Speaker 1: I always imagined, I always thought to myself on the
- 17:07Speaker 1: drive home, on the drive to work, what's the thing
- 17:09Speaker 1: that's going to make us fight? What is the thing
- 17:11Speaker 1: that's going to get us in a fight? And I
- 17:14Speaker 1: found that thing this morning. It's Caleb Williams of Ben Johnson.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So we bring on Field Yates, fantasy-focused football podcast, first
- 17:26Speaker 1: draft as well, wherever you get your podcasts. Help us
- 17:29Speaker 1: settle this debate here. Well, I don't want to misrepresent Taylor,
- 17:35Speaker 1: so let's start here. Taylor, what were your comments— on
- 17:38Speaker 1: Caleb Williams as it pertains to last night's game.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Field, my take was that Caleb out-dueled Drake May. But
- 17:46Speaker 3: the only reason we're not spending this morning killing Caleb
- 17:48Speaker 3: Williams for the decision taking the third down sack is
- 17:51Speaker 3: because Cairo Santos bailed him out with that career-long field goal.
- 17:59Speaker 5: You know, I don't know that I felt like one
- 18:01Speaker 5: of them definitively played better than the other. Drake had
- 18:04Speaker 5: the worst error of the night, which was the interception
- 18:07Speaker 5: in the end zone. Yeah. Caleb had the second worst
- 18:10Speaker 5: error of the night, which was taking the sack on
- 18:11Speaker 5: that third down play that you just referenced. Yes. But
- 18:14Speaker 5: I thought last night, I mean, this, maybe this is
- 18:16Speaker 5: just trying to be a little bit too Pollyannish of
- 18:20Speaker 5: a view, but my takeaway rewatching or thinking about last
- 18:23Speaker 5: night's game, I should say is that, did we just
- 18:25Speaker 5: watch the two best young quarterbacks in the NFL square
- 18:29Speaker 5: off and the If you were building a franchise for
- 18:32Speaker 5: the next 10 years, would Caleb Williams and Drake May
- 18:36Speaker 5: in some order go one and two?
- 18:38Speaker 4: You tell us, would they? Because I would take Caleb
- 18:40Speaker 4: Williams right now.
- 18:42Speaker 5: I think it's close. I think it's a good debate
- 18:44Speaker 5: either way. I think that Caleb Williams within the Ben
- 18:47Speaker 5: Johnson structure is hard to argue against. I think Drake
- 18:51Speaker 5: May within the structure with Josh McDaniels is pretty hard
- 18:54Speaker 5: to argue against as well. I think if you put
- 18:56Speaker 5: these two teams in court, they would probably make the
- 18:58Speaker 5: case for their own guy. Which, you know, I don't know.
- 19:01Speaker 5: This is not a very 2026 sports media way to
- 19:04Speaker 5: go about this. My opinion is that we can waste
- 19:06Speaker 5: plenty of energy on debating whether Caleb Williams is better
- 19:09Speaker 5: than Drake May or Drake May is better than Caleb Williams.
- 19:11Speaker 5: The bottom line is that if you're asking me who
- 19:13Speaker 5: are the best quarterbacks under the age of 25, those
- 19:16Speaker 5: guys are the clear one, two to me. Other players
- 19:19Speaker 5: can enter the mix, but those are the two best
- 19:20Speaker 5: under 25. And that's a pretty damn high bar to clear.
- 19:24Speaker 5: So both of these guys are good enough. Their team
- 19:26Speaker 5: should be in contention for as long as they're healthy.
- 19:28Speaker 4: All right.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You mentioned Ben Johnson. So you led us right to
- 19:31Speaker 1: the fight that we had earlier, right before you came on.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Okay.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Who deserves more credit? Does Ben Johnson deserve the credit
- 19:38Speaker 1: for Caleb Williams being so good? Or does Caleb Williams
- 19:41Speaker 1: deserve the credit for Ben Johnson being such a great coach?
- 19:44Speaker 5: This is such, this is like, this is flashbacks to
- 19:48Speaker 5: my childhood.
- 19:49Speaker 4: This is, sports radio, my man. This is what it is.
- 19:51Speaker 5: This is what it is. I grew up in Boston
- 19:55Speaker 5: and you know, of course the Patriots and all their success.
- 19:58Speaker 5: And I remember, you know, I remember all the Super
- 20:00Speaker 5: Bowls the Patriots won, but I remember the first one,
- 20:03Speaker 5: Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes during the entire playoff run.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Bill Belichick architected the greatest defensive game plan that we
- 20:11Speaker 5: had ever seen in the Super Bowl. And for a while,
- 20:14Speaker 5: it was Bill Belichick dragged Tom Brady down. to a
- 20:18Speaker 5: Super Bowl, and he obviously became an amazing story, right?
- 20:20Speaker 5: But different era, we didn't see quite as crazy of
- 20:23Speaker 5: past numbers, but Tom Brady was throwing for like, you know,
- 20:27Speaker 5: 3,000 yards a year as the Patriots were dominating early
- 20:31Speaker 5: on in the first couple years of that 20-year dynasty.
- 20:34Speaker 5: And then by the end of it, it was people
- 20:36Speaker 5: that were like, you know, Bill Belichick without Tom Brady
- 20:38Speaker 5: would be Jeff Fisher with better PR, right? It's like,
- 20:41Speaker 5: you know, come on now. Like, let's just, let's be
- 20:44Speaker 5: a little bit more level-headed about these things. I think
- 20:47Speaker 5: Caleb has an immense amount of talent. I also think
- 20:50Speaker 5: that the first season of his career showed that Caleb
- 20:52Speaker 5: has talent that needs to be harnessed and that he
- 20:55Speaker 5: had some habits early in his career that were a
- 20:59Speaker 5: little bit too loose. And Ben Johnson, what's to me
- 21:02Speaker 5: most remarkable about Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams' relationship is
- 21:06Speaker 5: that we've gotten to the point where not only is
- 21:08Speaker 5: Caleb playing the way that Ben wants him to play,
- 21:12Speaker 5: Caleb sounds like Ben Johnson when he speaks. It's like
- 21:15Speaker 5: he is Ben Johnson's extension, just, you know, whatever, 15
- 21:18Speaker 5: or 17 years younger than Ben Johnson in quarterback form,
- 21:23Speaker 5: which I think is cool. I mean, it's probably always
- 21:27Speaker 5: hard to argue against the quarterback in terms of which
- 21:30Speaker 5: one matters the most because we see how wretched teams
- 21:33Speaker 5: become when they are without their quarterback. But I do
- 21:37Speaker 5: think these guys just, it's Caleb at this level, Caleb
- 21:41Speaker 5: doesn't get to this level without Ben, and Ben doesn't
- 21:44Speaker 5: look as brilliant of a head coach as he currently
- 21:47Speaker 5: looks without Caleb. And we saw that to a degree
- 21:50Speaker 5: during that last Tyson-Bajan start where things fell apart sort
- 21:53Speaker 5: of spectacularly against the Packers.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So that's my point. I guess he can't just make
- 21:59Speaker 1: any quarterback as good as Caleb Williams is. There's physical
- 22:02Speaker 1: talent that he had before he got.
- 22:04Speaker 5: For sure.
- 22:05Speaker 4: To the NFL.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I believe Caleb Williams on just about any team in
- 22:09Speaker 1: the NFL would just about any coach would eventually figure
- 22:12Speaker 1: it out.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Yeah. He'd probably get there in time. Ben definitely, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 5: he accelerated the process. I think it's also fair to
- 22:18Speaker 5: say that if you gave, if I had to ask
- 22:21Speaker 5: you to win a game with Tyson Bajent and you
- 22:25Speaker 5: had a month to prepare for the game, how many
- 22:27Speaker 5: coaches would you rather have than Ben Johnson to work
- 22:31Speaker 5: with Tyson Bajent for that month? And I think the
- 22:33Speaker 5: answer is one. Yeah, Kyle Shanahan, right? So it's like,
- 22:37Speaker 5: you know, we're kind of acknowledging in different ways that
- 22:39Speaker 5: both of these guys are elite in their own category.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Ben Johnson, of course. Was Ben a walk-on at North
- 22:46Speaker 5: Carolina or just a backup quarterback.
- 22:48Speaker 4: At North Carolina?
- 22:48Speaker 3: He was a walk-on from Asheville.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so was Taylor.
- 22:51Speaker 1: They have, yeah, their kindred spirits, and Taylor said he
- 22:53Speaker 1: was going to get them on, and we're still waiting.
- 22:56Speaker 5: Has he offered you a job on the staff yet?
- 22:58Speaker 4: No.
- 22:59Speaker 3: He'd kill for like a clock management spot or something.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Hey, clock management jobs are all the rage right now
- 23:05Speaker 5: in the NFL. You know what I'm saying? Not to
- 23:07Speaker 5: pivot us away from the Caleb and Ben and last
- 23:11Speaker 5: night's game part of it, but you know what I
- 23:13Speaker 5: think I've realized about the clock management stuff? It's so
- 23:17Speaker 5: ripe for analysis and conversation because maybe Taylor notwithstanding– the
- 23:23Speaker 5: rest of us on this podcast couldn't like break down
- 23:25Speaker 5: the vulnerabilities of cover six, you know, against the Rams offense. Right.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Like we, we don't know. We don't have that in
- 23:32Speaker 5: our bag.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:33Speaker 5: But all of us have it in our bag to know.
- 23:36Speaker 5: All right. Like, you know, if at the end of
- 23:38Speaker 5: the game, it's third down and you know, or whatever,
- 23:42Speaker 5: second down and you got 28 seconds left and you
- 23:46Speaker 5: want to run the clock to about four seconds that
- 23:48Speaker 5: if you're going to throw the football, then you, that's fine,
- 23:52Speaker 5: but it's got to go out of bounds. If you're
- 23:54Speaker 5: going to run the ball, you better be prepared to
- 23:55Speaker 5: take a knee. Clock management is relatively rudimentary for all
- 23:59Speaker 5: of us to understand, which is one of the reasons
- 24:01Speaker 5: why every coach doesn't have a person affixed to their
- 24:06Speaker 5: hip in these high leverage moments saying like, here's what
- 24:09Speaker 5: has to happen next and right now. And candidly, from
- 24:13Speaker 5: a quarterback's perspective, I mean, not saying that Jaden Daniels
- 24:17Speaker 5: is fully responsible, but like you're his awareness during that
- 24:21Speaker 5: play and the fourth down play this past Monday night,
- 24:24Speaker 5: where on fourth and three, he's running to the sidelines
- 24:27Speaker 5: and just throw the football out of bounds. Like, I
- 24:29Speaker 5: don't care what level it is. That's unacceptable for a quarterback.
- 24:32Speaker 5: So some of these like obvious black and white decision-making
- 24:36Speaker 5: aspects of football blows my mind that NFL teams and
- 24:39Speaker 5: occasionally NFL players haven't mastered them. Hmm.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I don't think we're ever going to get to an
- 24:44Speaker 6: actual answer on Ben Johnson versus Caleb Williams.
- 24:48Speaker 2: So for now, I'll let you off the hook.
- 24:50Speaker 5: I think if you had to pick one, Caleb.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Yeah, well, of course. You would pick the player, I think.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Yeah, pick a player.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Sure. One's on the field, one's not.
- 24:59Speaker 5: One's going to make $ 65 million starting next year, right?
- 25:02Speaker 2: Or whatever it is.
- 25:03Speaker 5: And the other one's going to– I'm sure Ben's making
- 25:06Speaker 5: crazy money, 15, 17. I don't know what the number is,
- 25:09Speaker 5: but somewhere in that 15 million range. Caleb, assuming a
- 25:12Speaker 5: new deal is done next offseason, will be at 60, 65,
- 25:16Speaker 5: $ 70 million. So that probably answers the question pretty straightforwardly
- 25:19Speaker 5: for you.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Fair enough.
- 25:21Speaker 6: I'd pay $ 65 million for Ben Johnson to be my
- 25:24Speaker 6: head coach.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Before I paid $ 65 million for Caleb Williams.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Mikey, you're out of your mind.
- 25:29Speaker 1: If the Jets, Mike, if you're going to spend $ 65,
- 25:31Speaker 1: $ 70 million field, he's a Jet fan. He's been waiting
- 25:35Speaker 1: for a quarterback like this his entire life.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 25:38Speaker 5: You're warped.
- 25:38Speaker 7: You're warped.
- 25:39Speaker 4: What are you talking about, Mikey?
- 25:41Speaker 1: You're saying he'd make Geno Smith this good?
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yes. Yes, I believe he could.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Okay. He chose Caleb Williams. Okay.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Moving on, because again, we are not going to find
- 25:53Speaker 6: middle ground here. Field released a mini-mock this week, and
- 25:57Speaker 6: I just, my question for Field is this. If I
- 26:01Speaker 6: would have told you four months ago that the first
- 26:04Speaker 6: quarterback name you were going to write down was Drew Mestemaker,
- 26:07Speaker 6: you would have told me what?
- 26:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Well, this is a rare thing that I'm going to
- 26:11Speaker 5: do right now, because I can promise you I've got
- 26:14Speaker 5: a whole, I got a dictionary worth of an encyclopedia
- 26:17Speaker 5: worth of bad takes. Uh, but your best to maker
- 26:20Speaker 5: was my guy coming into the season. Uh, there, there's,
- 26:22Speaker 5: there actually, there actually are receipts on this one. I
- 26:25Speaker 5: love drew mess to makers upside here. Now we have
- 26:27Speaker 5: a long ways to go. I don't think this race
- 26:29Speaker 5: is over by any stretch. Um, And part of Drew
- 26:32Speaker 5: Messermaker going two overall in my mock draft is Drew's
- 26:35Speaker 5: performance this season. He's got five straight games going into
- 26:38Speaker 5: their game tomorrow with 300-plus passing yards and two-plus passing touchdowns.
- 26:45Speaker 5: It also is a little bit of the anti-case against
- 26:47Speaker 5: some of the guys that came into this year with
- 26:49Speaker 5: big expectations. Arch Manning, the most notable player in that category.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Dante Moore from Oregon also in that category as well.
- 26:56Speaker 5: But Messermaker is super intriguing. He has.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Height, weight, dimensions that are basically Drake May coming out
- 27:04Speaker 5: of North Carolina to give you some perspective on his size.
- 27:07Speaker 5: That's good size, obviously. And there are some things he
- 27:10Speaker 5: does that, I don't know, to sound a little bit oversimplified.
- 27:15Speaker 5: are just uncoachable. He had a throw last week against
- 27:18Speaker 5: Houston that a lot of people drew a parallel to
- 27:20Speaker 5: the Zach Wilson pro day throw. Remember when Zach Wilson
- 27:24Speaker 5: kind of pirouettes and launches the ball 50 yards down
- 27:27Speaker 5: the field? Yeah, like Mestermaker did that in a game
- 27:30Speaker 5: against the 16th ranked team in the country for a
- 27:33Speaker 5: 54-yard gain. So there's a lot of good on Drew
- 27:36Speaker 5: Mestermaker on his tape this past year. But it is...
- 27:41Speaker 5: If he does go as high as I think he
- 27:43Speaker 5: has a chance to go, it's the most unlikely story
- 27:46Speaker 5: of a highly drafted quarterback that we'll ever see. Wow.
- 27:49Speaker 5: He didn't start for his high school team.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 5: His high school senior year, he's a punter and a safety.
- 27:55Speaker 5: The guy ahead of him goes, he started at Louisville,
- 27:57Speaker 5: and he's now transferred since. But it's like, this is as.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Hollywood, as you could possibly imagine, and maybe even beyond that.
- 28:07Speaker 5: It's an unbelievable story for a guy who I think
- 28:09Speaker 5: has an actual chance to be the first overall pick
- 28:12Speaker 5: in the draft.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Field, in your mock, you have the Tennessee Titans picking
- 28:15Speaker 3: Leonard Moore, the cornerback from Notre Dame. And you mentioned
- 28:18Speaker 3: in the write-up that you were between Moore and probably
- 28:21Speaker 3: Colin Simmons from Texas. Is there a world where Tennessee
- 28:24Speaker 3: picks a quarterback and they move on from Cam Ward?
- 28:27Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 28:30Speaker 5: This is the NFL, so the answer is absolutely there is, Taylor.
- 28:32Speaker 5: But I've tried to tell myself that it's not going
- 28:38Speaker 5: to happen because I've tried to convince myself that NFL
- 28:41Speaker 5: teams are getting a little bit wiser and more patient
- 28:45Speaker 5: on these quarterbacks because there are so many good examples
- 28:47Speaker 5: recently of second act or third act quarterbacks who were
- 28:53Speaker 5: at one point high draft picks, at one point were
- 28:56Speaker 5: acknowledged as big time talents, that teams just gave up
- 28:59Speaker 5: on too quickly. Sam Darnold is not playing great right now,
- 29:03Speaker 5: but Sam Darnold last year helped Seattle in the Super
- 29:05Speaker 5: Bowl and plays awesome. Geno Smith, prior to Sam Darnold
- 29:10Speaker 5: in Seattle, played great. And Geno was playing fine this year.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Not perfect, but much better than where he was last
- 29:16Speaker 5: year in Las Vegas. So Geno and Sam Darnold, and
- 29:20Speaker 5: we saw this to a degree with Mac Jones when
- 29:22Speaker 5: he got his opportunity to start for the Niners last year,
- 29:27Speaker 5: and you kind of go on and on with that list.
- 29:28Speaker 5: There are plenty of guys that were written off and
- 29:31Speaker 5: have come back and made themselves pretty decent players in
- 29:35Speaker 5: the NFL. So Tennessee, I believe needs to be patient. Um,
- 29:40Speaker 5: They have no choice, in my opinion, on Cam Ward.
- 29:43Speaker 5: You just can't yank the cord on a guy who
- 29:45Speaker 5: you took first overall a year and a half ago.
- 29:48Speaker 5: You need to sort of, we all need to acknowledge
- 29:51Speaker 5: that trajectory is like Patrick Mahomes, Jaden Daniels, CJ Stroud
- 29:57Speaker 5: in their first years as starters. are completely the anomaly
- 30:01Speaker 5: and not the expectation. And there have been other quarterbacks
- 30:04Speaker 5: that have looked really good out of the gates and
- 30:06Speaker 5: then fallen back down to earth, right? Bo Nix, if
- 30:09Speaker 5: we had, and we'll see where Bo ends up and
- 30:11Speaker 5: maybe part of the reason why he's struggling is his
- 30:13Speaker 5: schedule so far this season. But if after a year,
- 30:17Speaker 5: if the Broncos have been holding on to some, you know,
- 30:19Speaker 5: valuable backup quarterback and we're trading him because Bo is
- 30:23Speaker 5: so clearly the guy long-term and We'd be sitting there
- 30:26Speaker 5: now being like, really, should they have done that? So
- 30:29Speaker 5: I'm not ready to write off Cam Ward. I am
- 30:31Speaker 5: not yet allowing myself to enter that territory for Tennessee.
- 30:35Speaker 5: I also know the pressures of how this all works,
- 30:38Speaker 5: that if you're sitting there at number four and the
- 30:41Speaker 5: quarterback class, or three, excuse me, lives up more to
- 30:45Speaker 5: expectations for the rest of this season, then hell yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 5: we're going to have that debate. Should they take a
- 30:50Speaker 5: Drew Mestemaker or a CJ Carr or a Darian Mensah
- 30:52Speaker 5: or whoever it might be that ends up at the
- 30:54Speaker 5: top of the quarterback heap?
- 30:56Speaker 4: Baker would be a good example of what you're talking about, right?
- 30:58Speaker 5: Baker. Great example. Yep.
- 31:00Speaker 7: Yes.
- 31:14Speaker 4: What are your thoughts here on arch? Like how far
- 31:16Speaker 4: is he? Well, arch, if arch comes out, will he
- 31:19Speaker 4: be a first round pick?
- 31:21Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 31:21Speaker 7: No.
- 31:22Speaker 5: I mean, certainly, you know, State of the obvious. If
- 31:24Speaker 5: he way turns around, then yes. Let's just sort of
- 31:27Speaker 5: go through recent events. One is we got reporting from
- 31:32Speaker 5: Pete Thamel over here at ESPN that Texas is giving
- 31:35Speaker 5: more reps, first-team reps, to their redshirt freshman quarterback. That's
- 31:40Speaker 5: telling you they've planted the seed. They're eventually going to
- 31:42Speaker 5: have to bench Arch if this keeps up. The thing
- 31:45Speaker 5: about Arch that makes it such a confusing evaluation to
- 31:49Speaker 5: me is– If you were to go through some of
- 31:52Speaker 5: the physical traits that you need from a quarterback, it
- 31:54Speaker 5: would just be check, check, check, check, check for Arch, right?
- 31:57Speaker 5: The size is great. You know, the mobility is excellent.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Arm strength. And if you went and watched like his
- 32:04Speaker 5: best throws, you'd say to yourself, holy crap, like this
- 32:07Speaker 5: guy's got it, right? The and one mixtape of Arch
- 32:10Speaker 5: Manning would be incredible. He's really struggled in big games.
- 32:14Speaker 5: Really just has not met the moment. I would say
- 32:17Speaker 5: probably his best game against a good team probably the
- 32:21Speaker 5: Michigan bowl game last year.
- 32:22Speaker 7: Right.
- 32:23Speaker 5: As you guys know, bowl games with the non-playoff games,
- 32:26Speaker 5: like those are just basically, it's like getting the junior
- 32:29Speaker 5: varsity team ready before the next season actually begins. Michigan
- 32:33Speaker 5: got Michigan guys were opting out or were not available
- 32:36Speaker 5: for a ton of guys weren't available. So you go
- 32:40Speaker 5: to arch this year and you, They end up winning
- 32:43Speaker 5: that Ohio State game. They have two rushing touchdowns in
- 32:45Speaker 5: the fourth quarter. And what I would challenge whoever is
- 32:49Speaker 5: in the draft room that is right now, based off
- 32:51Speaker 5: what we know, saying, we need to take Arch Manning high,
- 32:54Speaker 5: is I would say, I don't want you to tell
- 32:57Speaker 5: me about the traits. I want you to point me
- 32:59Speaker 5: to the moments where you can say, I told you so.
- 33:03Speaker 5: Here is how Arch proved it. And I don't really
- 33:05Speaker 5: think he has any of those. We talked about Drake
- 33:08Speaker 5: and Caleb and those guys having maybe the crowns, the
- 33:11Speaker 5: co-crowns of best young quarterback in the NFL. I didn't
- 33:14Speaker 5: mention Jaden Daniels in that conversation. He's at least on
- 33:17Speaker 5: the periphery. But go back to Jaden's final season at LSU.
- 33:21Speaker 5: And that team wasn't the same level of team that
- 33:23Speaker 5: Joe Burrow had in 2019. But he helped them win
- 33:27Speaker 5: a lot of games. And you can just go back
- 33:29Speaker 5: to I mean, any number of games for Jaden Daniels
- 33:32Speaker 5: where you're like, yep, and a game they shouldn't have
- 33:34Speaker 5: won against Missouri, who had an awesome defense at Mizzou,
- 33:38Speaker 5: tough place to play. Jaden was just, I'm the best
- 33:40Speaker 5: player on the field, and I'm going to put my
- 33:43Speaker 5: entire team on my back. Don't really have that with Arch.
- 33:46Speaker 5: It's hard to find a game, a moment, a string
- 33:49Speaker 5: of games, a string of plays where you're like, this
- 33:52Speaker 5: is exactly what it looks like to be a high-level
- 33:56Speaker 5: pro quarterback. So I think he's a day-two pick overall.
- 33:59Speaker 5: as of what we have seen so far. And my
- 34:03Speaker 5: confidence in him turning that around definitely shrinks by the day.
- 34:07Speaker 5: I think there's a real chance he's playing in college
- 34:09Speaker 5: football next year, but not at Texas.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Wow.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Well, the problem is going to be when you ask
- 34:14Speaker 6: people to point to those moments, they're going to point
- 34:16Speaker 6: to eli winning the super bowl and peyton winning the
- 34:19Speaker 6: super bowl and arch manning's highlights and go that's why
- 34:23Speaker 6: yeah yeah i.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Mean you know but the apple the apple can fall far.
- 34:27Speaker 4: It can right right yes.
- 34:29Speaker 5: And he'll get he'll get a boost and i think
- 34:31Speaker 5: i think the manning dynamic goes a little bit of
- 34:33Speaker 5: both ways for arch on the one hand it's helped
- 34:36Speaker 5: them right like i think there are going to be
- 34:37Speaker 5: people that i remember when um and sorry sorry mikey
- 34:41Speaker 5: on this one but I remember when Adam Gase was
- 34:44Speaker 5: getting some love as a head coaching candidate in the
- 34:47Speaker 5: NFL and it was, I mean, Peyton Manning loves this guy, right?
- 34:51Speaker 5: Peyton thinks that Adam Gase is one of the smartest
- 34:55Speaker 5: offensive minds he's been around, right? That cologne is, is,
- 34:58Speaker 5: is valuable, right? There are people that are going to say, yeah,
- 35:01Speaker 5: I mean, Arch Manning, he's wired like a Manning, which
- 35:03Speaker 5: I have heard. I remember, I'll never forget a scout
- 35:06Speaker 5: was telling me this. He went to go see, um,
- 35:09Speaker 5: Texas practice. And this was when Quinn Ewers was still there.
- 35:13Speaker 5: And I was asking, how's it looking? And he goes, yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 5: you know, they're not there yet on arch. It's still
- 35:18Speaker 5: going to be Quinn's team. He goes, but let me
- 35:19Speaker 5: tell you what, watching arch practice was incredibly impressive. What
- 35:24Speaker 5: he was doing on a play in play out basis,
- 35:27Speaker 5: the way that he was staying locked in, like it's
- 35:29Speaker 5: very clear just how much football means to him. And
- 35:32Speaker 5: I sort of stored that one away. So I know
- 35:34Speaker 5: that Arch is wired the right way. The problem is
- 35:37Speaker 5: just being wired the right way doesn't equate to wins
- 35:41Speaker 5: on the field. And we have seen a lot of quarterbacks.
- 35:46Speaker 5: There's a very notable case of this right now in
- 35:48Speaker 5: Brock Purdy that don't have the off-the-charts physical traits, but
- 35:53Speaker 5: have the processing and the mental aptitude to be a really,
- 35:58Speaker 5: really good quarterback in the NFL. There's not as many
- 36:01Speaker 5: examples of quarterbacks who've got all the physical traits but
- 36:06Speaker 5: aren't processing, aren't seeing the game well, are turning the
- 36:09Speaker 5: football over too much, and are successful over a prolonged
- 36:12Speaker 5: period of time. And he can make me look dumb
- 36:16Speaker 5: with just one performance on Saturday night. But so far,
- 36:19Speaker 5: Arch is playing like a guy who's got all the
- 36:22Speaker 5: physical traits but is not seeing the field well whatsoever
- 36:25Speaker 5: this year.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Field, if the Eagles lose to the Cowboys on Monday
- 36:29Speaker 3: Night Football and the Eagles fall to 2-5, how do
- 36:32Speaker 3: you think that changes their plans ahead of the trade deadline?
- 36:35Speaker 3: And who could the Eagles shop at the deadline?
- 36:39Speaker 5: The Eagles, you know, it's interesting. One thing I've always
- 36:43Speaker 5: respected about teams in sports is when they can properly self-scout.
- 36:48Speaker 5: I think it's good to know where you are in
- 36:51Speaker 5: your franchise's trajectory. If you are going for it all,
- 36:56Speaker 5: then you should be exhausting every resource, turning over every
- 37:00Speaker 5: stone to see what's available. If you're at the bottom,
- 37:02Speaker 5: you know, I'd argue, I think what the Dolphins have
- 37:05Speaker 5: done this year, I know it sucks. I'm sure there
- 37:08Speaker 5: are people around Stugatz that are sick of this team getting,
- 37:10Speaker 5: you know, smoked and have so many talent holes. I'd
- 37:14Speaker 5: rather take it all on the chin in one year
- 37:16Speaker 5: or two years and start to build this thing back
- 37:18Speaker 5: up the right way. Being in the middle can be
- 37:21Speaker 5: a really dangerous spot. Philly, because of the division they
- 37:24Speaker 5: play in, can legitimately say, even if we lose on Monday,
- 37:28Speaker 5: we're still in the mix. But I also think it's
- 37:30Speaker 5: very logical that if they lose and they go down
- 37:34Speaker 5: to two and four, would that be?
- 37:36Speaker 4: No, no, I'm sorry. Two and five, I think.
- 37:38Speaker 2: Two and five.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 37:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:40Speaker 5: The Eagles at two and five would probably have to say,
- 37:43Speaker 5: all right, who is not a building block for us
- 37:46Speaker 5: going forward? Could have got like Dallas Goddard, who it
- 37:51Speaker 5: seemed like at one point this offseason, almost move off
- 37:54Speaker 5: from moved off from Tariq will in the corner who, uh,
- 37:58Speaker 5: they signed to a one-year deal, like guys who aren't
- 38:01Speaker 5: guarantees to be a part of the next great Eagles franchise,
- 38:04Speaker 5: I think would come up, um, under the microscope. And
- 38:07Speaker 5: then they'd have to make a decision on guys where the, they,
- 38:12Speaker 5: they want to keep the player, but the price might
- 38:14Speaker 5: become just too good. Like Saquon Barkley is the most
- 38:16Speaker 5: notable lobby, uh, example there. Saquon has not been worth
- 38:21Speaker 5: the contract this year. Um, But someone else may view
- 38:24Speaker 5: him as the icing on the cake to their Super
- 38:26Speaker 5: Bowl push. And would Philadelphia want to trade away a
- 38:29Speaker 5: player who, if you keep him, even while acknowledging how
- 38:33Speaker 5: he hasn't been great this year, let's take on Barkley.
- 38:36Speaker 5: He can come back next year and rush for 1,500
- 38:38Speaker 5: yards if they get the offensive line figured out. So
- 38:41Speaker 5: they feel like the team that can thread the needle
- 38:43Speaker 5: about as much as any of the we thought they
- 38:47Speaker 5: were contenders coming into the year club.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Field, what was your evaluation of J.J. McCarthy headed into
- 38:53Speaker 1: his draft?
- 38:56Speaker 5: I liked J.J. McCarthy. I think he finished as like
- 38:59Speaker 5: the 18th player overall on my board. The part about J.J.
- 39:03Speaker 5: that was most complicated was a little bit of what
- 39:06Speaker 5: we talked about with Arch Manning.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:08Speaker 5: Similar in this regard is J.J. didn't have a bunch
- 39:13Speaker 5: of moments during his final season in Michigan. He had
- 39:16Speaker 5: a couple. He was good against Alabama in their playoff game.
- 39:19Speaker 5: But the difference between JJ and Arch was Arch not
- 39:24Speaker 5: meeting the moment has been costly to Texas winning the game, right?
- 39:29Speaker 5: Like Florida and Oklahoma, he doesn't meet those moments, especially Oklahoma,
- 39:33Speaker 5: and they end up losing those games. So it's like J.J.,
- 39:37Speaker 5: him not having as many moments was more a byproduct of, well,
- 39:40Speaker 5: they're just so good on defense, and they ran their
- 39:43Speaker 5: Blake Cormack 22 rushing touchdowns that final season when Michigan
- 39:47Speaker 5: won the national championship, that Maybe JJ didn't have moments,
- 39:52Speaker 5: but he also didn't have moments where he wilted. So
- 39:57Speaker 5: it's not a perfect defense of JJ or Arch in
- 40:00Speaker 5: that sense, but JJ became a trickier evaluation than some
- 40:04Speaker 5: of the other quarterbacks in that class. The other part
- 40:07Speaker 5: about quarterback evaluation, this does work, I think, in Arch's favor.
- 40:11Speaker 5: It's no mystery, and you guys all know this. Once
- 40:15Speaker 5: the college football season is over, no position has a
- 40:19Speaker 5: better chance of to win the pre-draft process than quarterback.
- 40:23Speaker 5: These guys can go into a room and wow people over.
- 40:26Speaker 5: And I think there's a little bit of coaches in
- 40:30Speaker 5: the NFL feeling like, not all, but some of these
- 40:34Speaker 5: colleges in the NFL They're not coaching kids. They're just
- 40:37Speaker 5: collecting talent.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:39Speaker 5: So you see a quarterback who's been kind of OK
- 40:41Speaker 5: or has been good, but not great. And you can
- 40:44Speaker 5: attribute it to like, who's really coaching this guy? You know,
- 40:47Speaker 5: like they just recruited them as a five star, paid
- 40:51Speaker 5: them enough money to come here. But they're not really
- 40:53Speaker 5: developing these guys because college coaches will tell you it's
- 40:57Speaker 5: hard to develop players when you're so busy every day.
- 41:00Speaker 5: just re-recruiting the players already on your roster. So I
- 41:03Speaker 5: think coaches are innately wired to think they can bring
- 41:05Speaker 5: out the best version of a player. So JJ got
- 41:09Speaker 5: a real booster in the pre-draft process. A lot of
- 41:11Speaker 5: people just fell in love with the competitor that JJ is.
- 41:14Speaker 5: And you guys know all the stories from when he
- 41:15Speaker 5: was at Michigan. He was the king of yoga in
- 41:19Speaker 5: the morning and finding that inner peace. But then he
- 41:23Speaker 5: threw the eye black on, he became nine, and he
- 41:25Speaker 5: was this maniac competitor, right? And now it's... kind of
- 41:29Speaker 5: chuckle worthy. But at the time when Michigan's winning a
- 41:32Speaker 5: national championship, it was kind of inspiring. So, um, I
- 41:37Speaker 5: liked JJ. I don't want to sit here and say
- 41:38Speaker 5: I had a third round grade on him, but that
- 41:40Speaker 5: year it was, you know, uh, Caleb, Jaden, Drake were
- 41:44Speaker 5: all top five players in the class for me. JJ
- 41:47Speaker 5: was like 18th. And then I had Bo Nix and
- 41:49Speaker 5: Michael Penix Jr. At the top of the second round,
- 41:52Speaker 5: you know, somewhere in the 35 to 38 range. So, um,
- 41:56Speaker 5: We'll see. I think each of those bottom three guys
- 41:58Speaker 5: has a chance to prove they can be long-term starters,
- 42:02Speaker 5: but I was less sold compared to those top three
- 42:06Speaker 5: guys who all felt pretty darn close to can't miss.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I asked the question because I'm wondering, did you believe
- 42:13Speaker 1: in him enough?
- 42:14Speaker 4: Do you believe in him enough where J.J.
- 42:15Speaker 1: McCarthy, different scenery, different coach, now playing for the Giants,
- 42:19Speaker 1: going to get a start this week, where maybe he
- 42:21Speaker 1: can become a Baker Mayfield type where The team that
- 42:26Speaker 1: drafted him, the Vikings, gave up on him, and J.J.
- 42:28Speaker 4: McCarthy turns out to be really good somewhere else.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I thought the move by the Giants
- 42:34Speaker 5: at the time was virtually zero risk. It's a fifth-round pick.
- 42:40Speaker 5: He's under contract for this year and next. And for
- 42:44Speaker 5: like $ 4 million, or maybe it's six total. But the
- 42:48Speaker 5: bottom line is just go look around at backup quarterbacks
- 42:51Speaker 5: in the NFL and what they make these days, and
- 42:52Speaker 5: it's like.
- 42:55Speaker 5: If all you're doing is getting a backup quarterback at
- 42:58Speaker 5: a discounted price for a fifth-round pick, that's fine by me.
- 43:01Speaker 5: But the better version, the upside version, is you get
- 43:04Speaker 5: a guy who went 10th overall in the draft and
- 43:07Speaker 5: he plays closer to expectation there. I'm definitely a little skeptical.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Last week felt like the perfect set of circumstances for J.J.
- 43:16Speaker 5: McCarthy to thrive. Playing the Saints up huge, so they're
- 43:20Speaker 5: playing defense differently. prevent defense. And then on top of that,
- 43:27Speaker 5: there's no better time for a quarterback to come in
- 43:29Speaker 5: than down by three touchdowns. Because if JJ goes out
- 43:34Speaker 5: there and tries to rip a throw into a tight
- 43:37Speaker 5: window and it's picked off, it's not him who's going
- 43:40Speaker 5: to get the blame. It's Jameis was the quarterback when
- 43:43Speaker 5: we went down by 24 points. JJ was just trying
- 43:46Speaker 5: to make a play. So I'm definitely more skeptical of
- 43:50Speaker 5: what's going to happen this weekend against Houston. But the
- 43:53Speaker 5: roll of the dice by the Giants was a calculated
- 43:55Speaker 5: and I think very worthwhile one.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Fantasy Football Focus. Check him out there. Check him out
- 44:00Speaker 1: on First Draft as well with Mel. Is Greeny still
- 44:02Speaker 1: doing it? He's too busy, too big time?
- 44:04Speaker 5: Greeny's still doing it. I mean, Greeny is definitely a
- 44:06Speaker 5: busy man, but we recruit him here, and we're up
- 44:09Speaker 5: twice a week, so we're having a lot of fun.
- 44:10Speaker 1: All right, the next time we have you on, I
- 44:12Speaker 1: would like to see that encyclopedia of bad takes and
- 44:15Speaker 1: have you take us through it, okay?
- 44:17Speaker 5: I'm going to write a book on him one day.
- 44:20Speaker 4: I'll help you. I'll get the deal done.
- 44:23Speaker 5: I was in your book, wasn't I?
- 44:24Speaker 4: Yes, you are. Yes, you wrote my book. Yes, and
- 44:26Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 44:27Speaker 5: No big deal.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I'll send you a check at some point.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Thank you. I won't. Thank you, Phil. We appreciate it.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Again, fantasy football focus.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Check him out there. First draft as well. He's all
- 44:39Speaker 4: over ESPN. We love you, buddy. We miss you. We
- 44:41Speaker 4: appreciate the time. Love you, guys.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Talk to you soon.
- 44:44Speaker 4: All right, man.
