Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. Welcome back to
- 0:07Speaker 1: Real Talk with Mike D. I am the one, the only,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and the original Mike D. Thank you for being here.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. And as always, I appreciate you.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to tell you right off
- 0:20Speaker 1: the bat, I am exhausted. I had absolutely no sleep
- 0:25Speaker 1: last night. I tossed and turned. Because I was in pain.
- 0:30Speaker 1: My back hurt. My body hurts. I was in so
- 0:36Speaker 1: much pain, it was unreal. So, I had one of
- 0:41Speaker 1: those nights where you look at the clock and think, well,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I guess sleep just isn't happening tonight. Even though you
- 0:48Speaker 1: close your eyes, you toss and turn. You flip the
- 0:52Speaker 1: pillow over because maybe the other side is magically going
- 0:55Speaker 1: to solve all your problems. You check the clock. It's 1247.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Then you're scrolling on your phone. You put the phone down.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You close your eyes again. Then you wake up and
- 1:11Speaker 1: it's 213. At this point, you're not even sleeping anymore.
- 1:17Speaker 1: You're negotiating with God. You're like, listen, I don't need
- 1:21Speaker 1: eight hours. Just give me four. Hell, I'll take three
- 1:24Speaker 1: and a half. Just give me something. But sleep doesn't come.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And then before you know it, morning is here. The
- 1:34Speaker 1: alarm goes off and you stare at that alarm like
- 1:36Speaker 1: it's your worst enemy. You think, you've got to be
- 1:40Speaker 1: shitting me. But your body says nope. Your brain says nope.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And your eyes are saying absolutely not. But your responsibilities,
- 1:49Speaker 1: they don't give a damn. That's the part nobody tells
- 1:53Speaker 1: you about being an adult. You can be exhausted. You
- 1:56Speaker 1: can be mentally drained. You could be running on fumes,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but the bills still need to be paid. The job
- 2:04Speaker 1: still expects you to show up. The responsibilities at home,
- 2:08Speaker 1: they don't disappear. Life doesn't look at you and say,
- 2:12Speaker 1: hey Mike, you didn't sleep last night? Why don't you
- 2:15Speaker 1: take the day off? Nope. You know what life says?
- 2:21Speaker 1: It says get up. And that's exactly what you do.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You get up. You drag yourself out of bed. You
- 2:29Speaker 1: walk into the bathroom looking like you've been through three
- 2:32Speaker 1: rounds with Mike Tyson. You look in the mirror and think, damn,
- 2:36Speaker 1: who in the hell is that guy? Your hair is
- 2:39Speaker 1: messed up. Your eyes are bloodshot. Your face looks tired.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And you're standing there trying to convince yourself that you're
- 2:46Speaker 1: ready for the day. Splash some cold water on your face. Nothing.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You splash a little bit more. Still nothing. Then you
- 2:54Speaker 1: make coffee. And I'm not talking about one cup. I'm
- 2:59Speaker 1: talking about the coffee like you're trying to bring yourself
- 3:02Speaker 1: back from the dead. You take that first sip and
- 3:06Speaker 1: for about 30 seconds you think, okay, I might survive this.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Then reality hits because coffee can help wake you up.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But coffee can't replace sleep. And that's the problem. You're
- 3:20Speaker 1: running on empty. But you've got somewhere to be. You've
- 3:23Speaker 1: got things to do. You've got people counting on you.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And you have responsibilities. And sometimes that's what being an
- 3:30Speaker 1: adult really is. It's doing what needs to be done
- 3:34Speaker 1: even when you don't feel like you have anything left
- 3:36Speaker 1: to give. There are mornings when you don't want to
- 3:40Speaker 1: get out of bed. Not because you're lazy. Not because
- 3:43Speaker 1: you don't care. Because you're exhausted. Sometimes your body is
- 3:47Speaker 1: screaming for rest but your life doesn't have a pause button.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You think about calling out for work. You think, maybe
- 3:55Speaker 1: I should just stay home today. And sometimes, if you're
- 3:58Speaker 1: genuinely too tired to drive or work safely, you absolutely
- 4:03Speaker 1: need to make the responsible decision and rest. But there
- 4:07Speaker 1: are also those days when you have to keep moving.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So you get dressed, you grab your stuff, you walk
- 4:12Speaker 1: out the door and you're thinking, let's just get through today.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That's the goal. Not conquering the world, not being Superman,
- 4:22Speaker 1: not being perfect. Just get through today. One hour at
- 4:27Speaker 1: a time. One task at a time. One cup of
- 4:30Speaker 1: coffee at a time. And you know what's crazy? Nobody
- 4:36Speaker 1: looking at you from the outside may have any idea
- 4:38Speaker 1: of exactly what you're dealing with. They see you walking
- 4:44Speaker 1: into work and they say, good morning. And you're thinking,
- 4:48Speaker 1: good morning. There is nothing good about this morning. Because
- 4:52Speaker 1: you're exhausted. But you smile anyway. You say, good morning.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Because that's what we do. We put on that face.
- 5:00Speaker 1: We keep moving. We do our jobs. We take care
- 5:04Speaker 1: of our families. We handle our responsibilities. And sometimes we're
- 5:08Speaker 1: doing all of that while we're completely exhausted on the inside.
- 5:14Speaker 1: That's something I think we need to talk more about
- 5:16Speaker 1: because there are expectations that you're supposed to always be okay.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You're supposed to always have energy. You're supposed to always
- 5:26Speaker 1: be productive. You're supposed to wake up motivated. You're supposed
- 5:29Speaker 1: to handle everything. But we're humans, and sometimes we have
- 5:35Speaker 1: terrible nights. Sometimes our minds won't shut off. Sometimes we're
- 5:40Speaker 1: worried about money. Sometimes we're worried about work. Sometimes we're
- 5:45Speaker 1: thinking about relationships. Sometimes we're thinking about the future. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: sometimes we're just lying there staring at the ceiling while
- 5:52Speaker 1: our brain decides the perfect time to replay every mistake
- 5:55Speaker 1: we've ever made. Then morning comes and you're exhausted. But
- 6:00Speaker 1: guess what? You still have responsibilities. That's adulthood. And I'm
- 6:06Speaker 1: not saying that in a depressing way. I'm saying it
- 6:09Speaker 1: because there's something powerful about realizing I made it through
- 6:13Speaker 1: another day. Maybe nobody applauds you. Maybe nobody knows how
- 6:18Speaker 1: difficult that day was. Maybe nobody knows that you barely slept.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Maybe nobody knows that you were running on three hours
- 6:29Speaker 1: of sleep, but you know that sometimes you have to
- 6:32Speaker 1: give yourself credit because getting through difficult days when you're exhausted,
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's not easy. You still show up. You're still tired.
- 6:41Speaker 1: You still did what you need to do, and that's something. Now,
- 6:46Speaker 1: here's the important part. We also have to learn when
- 6:49Speaker 1: enough is enough because there's a difference between pushing through
- 6:53Speaker 1: a rough morning and constantly running yourself into the ground.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You cannot live permanently exhausted. Your body needs rest. Your
- 7:03Speaker 1: mind needs rest. Your soul needs rest. Sometimes the responsible
- 7:08Speaker 1: thing isn't pushing harder. Sometimes the responsible thing is saying,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I need to stop. I need sleep. I need to recharge.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I need to take care of myself. Because here's the truth.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You can't take care of everybody else if you completely
- 7:26Speaker 1: destroy yourself in the process. If you're listening to this
- 7:31Speaker 1: right now and you had one of those nights, maybe
- 7:34Speaker 1: you didn't sleep at all. That's me. Maybe you got
- 7:38Speaker 1: two hours. Maybe you got three. Maybe you've been staring
- 7:42Speaker 1: at the ceiling all night wondering how in the hell
- 7:45Speaker 1: you're going to make it through today. Take a breath.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You don't have to figure out your entire life. You
- 7:53Speaker 1: don't need to solve every problem today. And you do
- 7:56Speaker 1: not have to be perfect today. Just take the next step.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Get through the morning. Get through the afternoon. Get home.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Take care of what absolutely needs to be taken care of.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And when you finally get the opportunity to rest, rest.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And don't feel guilty about it. Don't convince yourself that
- 8:16Speaker 1: you're being lazy. Rest is not laziness. Rest is part
- 8:20Speaker 1: of taking care of yourself because tomorrow may bring another
- 8:22Speaker 1: long day, another early morning, another responsibility, another challenge. And
- 8:29Speaker 1: you need something left in the tank. So yeah, maybe
- 8:33Speaker 1: you didn't get any sleep. Maybe you're exhausted. Maybe you're
- 8:36Speaker 1: running on coffee, determination, and pure stubbornness. But you're still here.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You're still moving. You're still trying. And sometimes that's enough.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Because life doesn't always wait until you're ready. Sometimes the
- 8:51Speaker 1: alarm goes off when you're exhausted. And sometimes responsibility comes
- 8:54Speaker 1: knocking when you desperately want to stay in bed. Sometimes
- 8:59Speaker 1: you have to get up and say, okay, let's do this.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Not because you're not tired. You are tired. You're exhausted.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And not because you're not struggling. Because you are. You're
- 9:12Speaker 1: struggling like hell. But because you have responsibilities. You have
- 9:17Speaker 1: people who count on you. You've got dreams you're still chasing.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You've got a life you're still trying to build. And
- 9:25Speaker 1: you've got another day in front of you. So ladies
- 9:30Speaker 1: and gentlemen, if you're listening to this while you're exhausted,
- 9:32Speaker 1: if you're drinking that first cup of coffee, if you're
- 9:36Speaker 1: getting ready for work after barely sleeping, I see you.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But we all need to keep going. Don't forget to
- 9:47Speaker 1: take care of yourself too because sometimes strength isn't about
- 9:50Speaker 1: how much you carry. Sometimes strength is knowing when you
- 9:54Speaker 1: need to put something down. And tonight, hopefully, you and
- 10:01Speaker 1: myself can get some sleep. Hopefully you put your head
- 10:06Speaker 1: on that pillow, close your eyes, and your brain finally says, okay, Mike,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you have done enough today. It's time to rest. And maybe,
- 10:15Speaker 1: just maybe, for once, that alarm clock can wait. Well,
- 10:20Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen, this has been Real Talk with Mike D.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I greatly appreciate you being here. I appreciate you listening.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And if you're struggling like me today, where you've gotten
- 10:32Speaker 1: absolutely no sleep, you had body pain all night long,
- 10:38Speaker 1: your back was on fire, your shoulders, your knees, your legs,
- 10:41Speaker 1: your back, you're sick in your stomach, and you feel
- 10:47Speaker 1: like just going back to bed and going back to sleep.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I feel you. But we have responsibilities and we have
- 10:55Speaker 1: things to do. So we just need to push forward.
- 11:02Speaker 1: But that's going to do it for today. I greatly
- 11:04Speaker 1: appreciate you being here. I appreciate you listening. And I
- 11:07Speaker 1: will see you all on the next episode.
