Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: If if you're reading and if you're studying and if you're becoming convicted and convinced that Jesus is your Savior, like, hey, why don't you, what's keeping you from crossing the line?
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And he said it.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: He said, uh, he said, because I I know I'm gonna have to change.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: What he was saying was, I know I'm gonna have to, I know I'm gonna have to do something with this word.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I can't just read it, believe it.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to go live it.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: The way I'm living now, this can no longer be the way.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Who Jesus is and how Jesus lived, that's the way.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Hey, welcome everybody back to the uh Extra Mile Podcast.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting here with a good friend of mine and the R Youth pastor here at the Florence campus, Pastor Ty Beckman.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Pastor Ty, good to have you around the table.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Excited to be here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Um, man, I was wondering whenever's gonna get the call out of the bullpen.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Here I am.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Here it's gonna be a good day.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Here you are.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: So before we get into the word, get into a conversation on the message from this past Sunday.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna be honest, I'm a little distracted because I'm waiting on the call, waiting on the update, waiting on my phone to ding.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Where LeBron James is gonna end his career.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know you've been sitting by the phone on that one.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: The king's coming home.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Hey, I've been wondering why you're talking to people and looking over.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: The song played when he came back and uh I'm coming home.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: If that song plays again, I'm crying.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Uh-uh, yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I can I can see it now.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: A tear slipping off your side.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Are you a fan?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: LeBron James?
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: I I'm a fan because of your passion for it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: You've inspired me.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: You've inspired me.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Well, let's talk about another king.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: His name is Jesus.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: And so we started a series.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe you joined us.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Uh if not, I would encourage you if you're listening to this podcast to join us online or join us in person in one of our three campuses.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: We do a series, a lot of churches do them, um, where we take some movies.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: And the reason we do it is Jesus taught through parables.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: He took things that were common in culture and used them to leverage to teach spiritual principles.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And movies are huge.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: I'm a movie guy.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Um, so we, unlike some other churches, we don't play a lot of movie clips.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: We just maybe hint at the movies.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: But this past week we talked about the Star Wars uh galaxy, you know, the uh Mandalorian, the franchise.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, introduced the Mandalorian.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And it all comes down to if you if you've never seen it, it's this he is a Mandalorian, that's his background.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: And they live by this creed, this is the way.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: It defines their decisions, determines the direction of their life, the sacrifices they make, um, their culture.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: And it's an easy play because Jesus, he said in John 14, 6, he said, I am I'm the way.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And so that introduced an entire conversation Sunday on like, what does that mean?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and what I said to the church is because a lot of people who know the Bible will point to John 14, 6 as a way to say Jesus is the only way to get to heaven, which he is, because the whole verse is I'm the way, the truth, and the life.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: No one comes to the Father but by me.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: But I think we escaped by that opening statement, I'm the way.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: He is the way to heaven, but he's not just the way to heaven, he's the way to live here on earth.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: And so that kind of started us on a conversation on like the Mandalorian, we should live out our faith.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: I'm I think so.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I'm just curious, Pastor Ty, what was what was your maybe first takeaway, your first thought as we dug into the message?
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I think hinging, for one, I love the Mandalorian, but hinging that phrase, this is the way, it just brought back so many thoughts of things I used to say, like, you know, my my house back in Etheridge, there were so many roads that like kind of led there, so many like little county roads.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Like, man, there's so many roads, all roads lead to my house in Etheridge.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: But let's just be honest, that's just not true.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: There's only one road that my house was on.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: And um, while it might seem like there's a lot of roads that can lead to God, Jesus He made it pretty clear there's only one way, and I am the way.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: And so I thought that that was uh such a cool, you know, dynamic of him being the only way to God.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: And yet there's a way that we can live, and uh that way honors God, reflects the the love of Christ.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: You know, you you talked about that.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: It's not just in our living, but it's our loving.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: It's how we leverage our gifts and our call, and all of that is whenever we participate in the way.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: And so I thought that was great.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I think the history when you read for sure the Bible, this is what Jesus dealt with, and unfortunately, things have not changed as much as they should.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You have a lot of people who can tell you what they believe, who go to church and hear preach what they should believe, sing songs about what we believe.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And it's just easy to sit in a building and then go out and just live like we used to.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And what God invites us into is not a belief system, but a lifestyle.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and I again, man, I think the challenge, one of the things I thought about I didn't talk about Sunday, is when I first got saved, I was 17 years old.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And probably the stuff that started hitting me first.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I gave my heart to the Lord, the Holy Spirit's convicting me.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: The stuff that started hitting me first wasn't the things I was supposed to start doing.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: It's all the stuff that all of a sudden become obvious.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I can't keep that's not the way.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not the way.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So, like for me, it was like I had this broad lifestyle of things I was doing, decisions I was making, and all of a sudden it was like, man, I can't act like that, I can't go there.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: And uh, not because it's a list of rules, but it's like if I'm gonna honor God and live out this faith, you know, that's not the way.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's kind of like what the teenagers in our ministry, a lot of time they think, this is what I don't do.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: But we try to like tell them that if all you try to do your whole life in your Christian walk, if you think aiming towards heaven means you're looking towards the things uh that Satan is tempting you to do and you're saying, I'm not gonna do this, no, no, no, no, no, you're gonna eventually find yourself gravitating back towards it because you're focusing on the wrong thing.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: We try to tell them, make a healthy swap.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: You know, think about the do's, not just the don'ts.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: And uh that starts, it's it's like gutters to your life.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: You start actually living the things out and you're not having to worry about those addictions, those temptations you used to have, because you're so focused on, I'm gonna get in the word, I'm gonna spend time in prayer.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: It's these things I'm going to, I'm gonna have healthy, healthy relationships and community rather than, oh man, I need to stay away from Snapchat.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: I need to stay away from these negative aspects of community.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so what you know, there's this is not the way, but again, Jesus said, I'm the way, there is the way.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And man, what you're saying is there are options, goes all the way back to Genesis.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Man, God says there's only one tree I don't want you to eat from, but look at all these other trees.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So again, there is there is a way.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: If we are a person that calls ourselves a Christ follower, um, there's a way to live.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And again, we don't always do it perfectly, we don't always do it completely.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: That's part of our journey, but we should should certainly strive to get past people that just listen and don't do.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't share this stat uh on Sunday.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I mentioned it, but the stat actually is, and I went back and looked, the word this or the word believer is only used five times.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Actually, it's only used twice.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: It's used unbeliever three times, but only used two times.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Associate with belief.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Belief.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: And we call ourselves believers.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Well, that's not what the Bible calls us.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: We love the word Christian.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: You know, that's you know, if you're marking a form, what kind of what's your religious background?
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I'm a Christian.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: That's only used three times.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: The word disciple is used 274 times, which tells me that what Jesus is calling us to is not to just listen and believe, but to actually walk away and do something.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: And I said this that you know, believers believe and disciples do.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: That's right, that's right.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it seems like I think that that association, everybody loves the association because it's kind of like you can wear it as a badge of honor.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: I'm a Christian, but if you have just an association without an application, no one's gonna actually see that life change that is supposed to be associated with the life-giving spirit of God.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: You know, I think it's so funny that in John chapter 14, he starts with the conversation as the way, the truth, and the life.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: But how are how, you know, he goes on and makes a promise about the the Holy Spirit coming, which is it seems like it's a side conversation.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: There's a different heading in my text, but I think it's so funny that we we want the association.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I know Jesus, he's the way of the truth and life.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: But the Holy Spirit actually allows us to walk out the way, to actually walk out the truth, to actually walk out the life.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: That's what he leads us into, is into all truth.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: And so I'm thankful for the Holy Spirit, but it's more than association.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: I think it's that application that really helps us to be mobilized as Christ followers.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we we open this conversation on LeBron James and NBA basketball, and you could expand that out.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a lot of people that go and sit in the stands, yeah, celebrate their team, wear wear the gear, you know, whatever.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: But at the end of the day, I'm not a I'm not a calf.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not a I'm not a Lakers.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm a fan.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but she might say we lose.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we lost.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we lost.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Well, we won.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: We like to claim the doves.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: The doves.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But again, man, that's the same thing with with Christians who sit in churches, wear the gear, shout the, you know, shout the anthems.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Jesus won.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but but don't walk out and actually live this thing out.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: And um what we what we did is we dug in just a little bit and we find in the book of Acts, which is the kind of the early history of the New Testament church, in six different times the way outsiders recognize or describe, again, what we call Christians, what we call believers, what the Bible calls the side is they're people of the way.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Hey, those are people that walk the way of Jesus, that did what Jesus did.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: And uh man, what a I I hope people look at me and and associate me with Jesus.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I'm sure there's times they can catch me and I'm not.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: But I want to live a life and the the way I use my words, the way I use my talent, my money, that people at least, man, he's he's like Jesus, or that's that's what a Christian is.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: And that's what it means, man, is to live this stuff out.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: So I want to dig in maybe two sections of scripture real quick, and uh two we didn't talk about on Sunday.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: One is found in Matthew uh chapter seven, the Sermon on the Mount.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: And you you know this.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: He says, uh he says in Matthew chapter uh seven, verse twenty four, this is Jesus teaching the the last portion of the Sermon on the Mount.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: He said, He says, Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and the beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: And then he says, But everyone who hears these sayings of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the rock, and basically this storm comes and tears it down.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: So Jesus acknowledges right away there's gonna be people that show up in church that sit and listen, and they walk away and they don't do.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And that's so astounding to me.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: But but Jesus recognizes we're in two categories.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, there's a lot of hearers, but there's only some doers.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of believers, but there's only some disciples.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And uh, I think one of the takeaways here is not just Jesus acknowledging that dynamic.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: We have to believe that about ourselves.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Are we are we doers or are we not?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it comes down to I think one of the things Jesus, and he don't use this word, but God's dumb.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not gonna do it God's way because that's foolish.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: When God's looking at us saying, if you don't do it my way, it's foolish.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: And he gives us the outcome of not being a doer.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: So I, you know, I to me there's there's motivation to be a doer other than impressing people, it's it's personal safety and security and sanctification, and like there's so many blessings of like doing life God's way.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: No, no doubt about it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I think it's so funny, you know, Faith Church, you know, this is the extra mile podcast.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: And if you've listened this far, you know, again, man, come come experience what God's doing here at our church because it's really something special, takes place on at all three of our campuses on Sunday mornings.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: But we're faith church, you know.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: I think James, the brother of Jesus, says it so so clearly.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: He's like, some of you say, like, oh, I I exist out of works or I exist out of faith.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: But he said, How can you say that you have faith if there's not works to accompany that?
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: And pretty much what James is attacking, that church of Jerusalem, he's like, hey guys, uh you can't just claim that you have this faith if you have nothing to show for it.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Not that any of those works save us by any stretch.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: We would never, you know, preach that it's by grace through faith that we're saved.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Um but uh again, whenever I'm talking to the teenagers at our church, I'm trying to get them to understand you can't go around saying I'm a Christian, putting that in the link in your bio.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: And then how you treat people on Thursday mornings, how you treat your parents at home, if you honor them, there has to be something that is a residual of saying, I've actually experienced life change.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: You know, you're talking about uh we always say that Jesus won, but we we talk here at Faith Church all the time about victory.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: You know, we want people to go through victory groups, yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: We want you to live a life of victory.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: What does that look like?
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: That that looks like doing it, not just claiming it.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And you know, and I wanted to be careful Sunday, and I spent a little time mentioning this.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: I don't want to put the idea of believing and doing like those are two separate things.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because you can be a believer that doesn't do, um, but you can't be a disciple that doesn't believe.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Like that's correct.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: One flows out of the other.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: If you believe, like, let me ask you this question Do you believe it's safe to drive down the road distracted texting on your phone?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Should you text and drive?
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: That is not wise.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: That's not wise.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, they've done studies.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: If you take your eye off the road, how how far your car, you know, travels in that short distance, and sometimes we don't realize it and how quick someone could pull out in front of us or stop.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: It is unsafe to text and drive.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: And I think the majority of people, I would think 100% of people would say, Yeah, it's not smart to text and drive.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I believe you shouldn't do it.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Well, do you know how I know whether you really believe you shouldn't do it?
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Whether you do it or not.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Do you do it?
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Because if you're doing it, you don't really believe you believe somehow you're an exemption to that.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: And man, there are a lot of people that, amen, Pastor, that's that's a good word.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: We say we believe it, but we exempt our lives by disobedience.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: And um, so again, it's it's it's this call to to come back and you know, man, I was so struck um the whole whole time getting ready for this message.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: I really, from time to time, I get hit with this thought.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: What if people re what if people really believe this message?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: What if several thousand people walk out of faith church this Sunday and actually say, I'm gonna, I'm gonna live the way?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Man, what I mean, it would change our communities, it would change our homes, it would change statistics that we're seeing still, you know, on the rise, negative statistics about marriage and about children and you know them falling out of their faith and things like that.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: We would see such a decline if people just applied this, because again, it's not about association, about applying this idea of saying, you know what, Jesus has set the example.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: You you made that so clear.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: There there's not like you have to go research the how-to's and you gotta look up 15 different professors on this.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: No, Jesus said, just follow me.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Deny yourself, take up your cross, follow me, then you will be my disciple.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: So it's not like we have to I mean, and again, not discounting any of the other writers of scripture, because what did what did Paul say?
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: He said, like, hey, follow me as I follow Christ.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: So it's this idea that there is only one way.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: You don't have to go and research because I love research.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hey, which restaurant?
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: And I follow all these people.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: We we love following on social media, all of our platforms, multiple people, and they have different opinions.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: But whenever it comes to salvation and making an eternal impact with the times you have on this life, there's one way.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, Jesus made it really simple and really clear.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Hey, love God and love people.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: This that you know, that's the way.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I just I just would say this.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Listen, if you're listening to this podcast and you currently are not a follower of Christ, you you've not really bought into Jesus being um your Messiah and to be your savior, you know, it's okay to start with investigation, it's okay to start with building into belief.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: But once you cross the line and you confess that Jesus is your Lord, once you say, I believe He's the Messiah, I believe He's my Savior, once you buy into belief, that should start to translate into life change.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: And I think we do a great job, you know, and for sure it's God drawing people, but we do a great job getting people in the building.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: I think we do a good job teaching and preaching and communicating to get believers to believe in the building.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: But again, it's once you walk away from a Sunday morning, once you close your Bible during devotions, once you turn off the podcast, what are you gonna do with it?
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And uh man, James, he acknowledges it and acknowledges this.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: This is the other section of scripture, very common.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Uh he says this, he says, Therefore, um, this is James chapter 1, verse 21, therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your soul.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: So he's saying, Hey, it starts with the word, starts with what you're hearing and believing, but then he says this verse 22, but be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: For anyone who's a hearer of the word and not a doer, he's like a man observing his natural face in a mirror.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: He observes himself, watch this, goes away and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: So sometimes we believe, but we really don't obey because we think God's dumb.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: We think our way is better.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: So I I'm not gonna really do what I heard the preacher talk about or what the Bible declares, what Jesus said, because I know better.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: So sometimes, you know, God's dumb, sometimes we're deceived or distracted.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Now I read this and I thought, is it really likely for someone to look in the mirror and walk away and forget what they saw?
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: And I remember the time, and it's happened probably several times, where I'm busy getting ready in the morning and I brush my teeth and did and was just distracted with what I had coming.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I'm looking in the mirror and I had toothpaste on my on my back.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: No doubt about it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: Idiot.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: And you get to 4 p.m.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: and I'll eventually come with you like, hey, Pastor, yeah, you got toothpaste, and you're like, dude, I didn't brush my teeth since 8 a.m.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's a listen to this.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: A good friend tells a friend immediately if their zipper's down, they got something on their face.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: But when I've encountered 10 people and like later I find out I've got it on my face and nobody told me.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: You're you're going on the list.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: They're not my friends.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: They're not my friends.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: But again, you know, James, James understands the same thing.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: There are lots of people, and maybe you're one of them, that you're hearing the word, but you're not doing it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: What Jesus said, you're hearing the word, but you're not doing it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: And we got to come back to being doers.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Man, this Jesus wants to change our life where we find our meaning and our purpose, where how we bring glory to God, isn't by a list of beliefs.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: It's by a lifestyle of honoring God by again, this is the way is following Jesus.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I uh I shared a story I want to share, um, share again because I think it's just so powerful.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: It's the story of Theo Vaughn.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: You know, Theo Vaughn, man, he has he just has a lot of traction in our culture right now.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: He's uh really started out, got his got his legs as a comedian, and he's now he's a very well-known podcaster.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: And he's been very public about researching the claims of Christ, reading his Bible, and just starting to navigate is is Jesus who he said he is?
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Am I a sinner?
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Is he the savior?
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And basically he's saying, I'm almost there where I believe.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: And he was recently confronted on a podcast by uh by one of his guests and said, Hey, if if you're reading and if you're studying and if you're becoming convicted and convinced that Jesus is your savior, like, hey, why don't you, what's keeping you from crossing the line?
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: And he said it.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: He said, uh he said, because I I know I'm gonna have to change.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: What he was saying was, I know I'm gonna have to, I know I'm gonna have to do something with this word.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: I can't just read it and believe it.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to go live it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: The way I'm living now, this can no longer be the way.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Who Jesus is and how Jesus lived, that's the way.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And uh man, I just think we have to get back to this place where we're people of the way.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Theo recognizes more than a lot of Christians that we have we gotta live this out loud.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the uh, you know, relating back to the Mandalorian, just real quick to this idea.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: And it's funny that the part of the creed that he was upholding is that he wasn't gonna take off his helmet.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: That's right, I was gonna come to that.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Oh man, my steel.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Oh no, I'm just I'm the Star Wars nerd here.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Tinjarin, he he made it happen.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: So it he kept the helmet on.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: It wasn't, you know, and all these other progressive Mandalorians, what do they do?
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: They walk around with their helmet off.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: They just put it on whenever they have to go into battle, you know, whenever they need it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: But he made a commitment.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: He's saying, I'm not taking it off for any, for any person.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Now, sure, in the you'll see there's some compromises there.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: And I think um one of the things we can kind of glean in our own personal walk with Christ is there's gonna be temptations to take the helmet off, to take off Christ.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: You know, that's what you know it says, like put on Christ.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: You know, that is the call of a Christ follower.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: You it's no longer I who live, but it's Christ who lives in me.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: And but guess what?
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Every single day you have a fork in the road.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Am I gonna be the old tie?
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Am I gonna be the old Pastor Steve?
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna be the old version of myself, the one that's supposed to be dead and gone, or am I gonna walk in this new life?
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: And so um, what Theo Vaughn is saying is like, I want to keep the helmet off.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know that if I were to do this, I've got to become a new person.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, unless you're born again, you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: So uh what a what a great challenge every single day to wake up and say, Lord, can you give me the strength to keep to stay to remain?
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: That's what Jesus says in the very next passage of scripture after John 14, John 15 is all about hey, stay connected to me, abide in me, and you will be fruitful.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: All you gotta do is keep the helmet on.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: This is the way.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: This is the way.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: So, hey, listen, man, God's not foolish.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: We are to not apply to our lives what he's taught us, and oftentimes we're forgetful.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: And so maybe you're hearing the word, but you're distracted by so many other temptations or opportunities.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Man, I just would challenge all of us.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Hey, man, let's get past belief.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Let's get into lifestyle.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: This is the way.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: This is the way.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Pastor Ty, thanks for joining us for the Experiment Podcast.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: We'll see you guys this weekend for week number two of God at the box office, and we'll see you next week for the podcast as well.
