- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, and welcome to the short stuff. I'm Josh, and
- 0:06Speaker 1: Chuck's here, and Jerry's here, and we're all here, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: this is short stuff with even more talk on cremins.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You thought we were done with talking cremains. We're not
- 0:17Speaker 1: done talking cremains. Don't you remember cremains is offensive to
- 0:21Speaker 1: the funeral directors. It's cremated remains. Oh did they say that? Yeah,
- 0:26Speaker 1: we said that because people wrote in and told us that. No.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I think we found it in our research atually. Yeah,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I think we talked about it on one of our many,
- 0:36Speaker 1: many episodes where we've talked about human remains. All right, well,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I apologize then to start off this short stuff. That's okay.
- 0:43Speaker 1: It's really tough not to say. It's everywhere too. It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: just so catchy. But apparently what the basis of it
- 0:50Speaker 1: is that what you're talking about is needs more dignity
- 0:55Speaker 1: than a jargony catchphrase like cremaine. I'm with you, it's
- 1:01Speaker 1: not a it's not a McDonald's product. It's not me
- 1:04Speaker 1: saying that. No, you're thinking of mc ashes. So what
- 1:10Speaker 1: we're talking about is what people do with cremated remains.
- 1:15Speaker 1: It's so hard not to say it now, and a
- 1:17Speaker 1: lot of things. You know, sometimes people keep it in
- 1:20Speaker 1: a vase in their home or in a box or
- 1:23Speaker 1: something like that. But it seems like more and more
- 1:26Speaker 1: the thing to do, and what I would like done
- 1:28Speaker 1: as well, is is to scatter those cremated remains somewhere
- 1:32Speaker 1: meaningful for for that person, whether it be a place
- 1:37Speaker 1: they went camping or their favorite uh rooftop pool at
- 1:42Speaker 1: a high end hotel or huh are you speaking about
- 1:48Speaker 1: something specific or just pulling stuff out of your cuffs.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Out of the cuffs? So okay, Wow, that was really
- 1:54Speaker 1: nice and random. I love it. Um or you know
- 1:57Speaker 1: someone's favorite restaurant you name it, like the man Chuck
- 1:59Speaker 1: really love the steakhouse. So we're gonna sneak some cremated
- 2:02Speaker 1: remains in here and put a couple of spoonfuls in
- 2:04Speaker 1: the palm plant by the front door. Yeah, and maybe
- 2:07Speaker 1: sprinkle a little bit in the bottle of tomorrow. Yeah
- 2:10Speaker 1: why not? Yeah, That's what you just described is what's
- 2:15Speaker 1: called wildcat scattering, where you know that there are rules
- 2:20Speaker 1: in place, and there are plenty of rules in place
- 2:22Speaker 1: about scattering cremated remains, but you're just flouting it. You say,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't care. Chuck wouldn't care. Chuck would want me
- 2:29Speaker 1: to spread them all over this steak joint, and that's
- 2:32Speaker 1: what we're going to do. Yeah, so that's called wildcat scattering.
- 2:36Speaker 1: What's interesting about the term wildcat scattering is I'm not
- 2:39Speaker 1: sure if our friends at house stuff Works made that
- 2:43Speaker 1: up or not. Yeah, this is from Nathan Chandler from
- 2:47Speaker 1: houstuffworks dot com. Do you think they made that up?
- 2:50Speaker 1: I don't know what it might be triggering a different memory.
- 2:53Speaker 1: When I was learning to drive, the woman who taught
- 2:56Speaker 1: me to drive, like the like I went to an
- 2:58Speaker 1: actual driving school, she said, you know when you when
- 3:02Speaker 1: you're in a snarl of people on the highway and
- 3:04Speaker 1: you have to kind of wiggle your way out and
- 3:06Speaker 1: speed up, call them wolf packs. Oh okay, And I
- 3:11Speaker 1: thought that that's what they were called. And I remember
- 3:13Speaker 1: saying that to a friend within the next year and
- 3:16Speaker 1: they were like, that's not what that's called, and they said.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It was such confidence that I realized that that woman
- 3:21Speaker 1: had made it up and was basically trying to spread
- 3:24Speaker 1: it around as if it were real, to make it real.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So I saw wildcat maybe a triggered wolf pack who knows.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You don't think it could have been a regionalism. I don't.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I've never heard anybody else call it a wolf pack.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Well we'll find out if someone writes in and they
- 3:41Speaker 1: were like, oh yeah, and Treboygan we call them wolfpacks,
- 3:44Speaker 1: right for somebody writing and be like that's so high O.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Wolf pack is one place that if you if you're
- 3:51Speaker 1: interested in scattering remains in a meaningful place, one place
- 3:57Speaker 1: that you can do so in the wild, legal with
- 4:01Speaker 1: permission is at a national park. Yeah, you got to
- 4:05Speaker 1: have to get a special permit for those. You can
- 4:08Speaker 1: also put them in bodies of water as well, public
- 4:12Speaker 1: body of water, but again it's their regulations and a
- 4:15Speaker 1: lot of times you need to get permission or a
- 4:18Speaker 1: permit and then they say like, hey, listen, you can
- 4:20Speaker 1: do that, but you can't do it, you know, fifteen
- 4:22Speaker 1: feet from the shore because no one wants to swim
- 4:25Speaker 1: up on that stuff. Like, get out there one hundred
- 4:27Speaker 1: feet or whatever the rule is and notify us and
- 4:31Speaker 1: then you're good to go. Well, from what I saw,
- 4:34Speaker 1: you need to be out three nautical miles to scatter
- 4:36Speaker 1: somebody's ashes legally. Is that's in an ocean clearly. Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 1: but what about in your favorite like municipal lake. I
- 4:45Speaker 1: don't know, man, I do not know what the rule
- 4:48Speaker 1: is on that because it probably depends on the place.
- 4:50Speaker 1: The whole thing that they're trying to do is get
- 4:52Speaker 1: around people getting open up against the cremated remains that
- 4:57Speaker 1: are not floating in your lake. You know, um, no
- 5:01Speaker 1: matter how you feel about it, you probably don't want
- 5:03Speaker 1: to kayak through a like a puddle of or not
- 5:06Speaker 1: a slick. A slick of cremated remains is kind of
- 5:09Speaker 1: floating there. That wouldn't bother me. Okay, So I'm wondering
- 5:12Speaker 1: about this because a lot of people might. But all
- 5:15Speaker 1: over the internet there are some people who are like, oh, yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you don't want to do that, and other people are like,
- 5:20Speaker 1: that's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. And it's like,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you're not like throwing body parts into the lake. I mean,
- 5:28Speaker 1: these are cremated remains. This is ashes, pulverized ash. And
- 5:32Speaker 1: what's more, the temperatures that the corpse is exposed to
- 5:38Speaker 1: are on the order of about fifteen hundred degrees f
- 5:41Speaker 1: eight hundred and fifteen degrees celsis. There it's considered sterile
- 5:44Speaker 1: ashes are sterile um, But I think it's just the
- 5:48Speaker 1: association with the fact that it used to be a
- 5:50Speaker 1: body that that's what really bothers people, right, I guess so,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and everyone is different. I'm not yucking a yum or
- 5:56Speaker 1: yemming a yuck, but I see it if I had
- 6:00Speaker 1: done that, if I, like canoe through something that turned
- 6:03Speaker 1: out to be remains, I would see that as like, Wow,
- 6:06Speaker 1: that's kind of like an honor, almost like getting upgraded
- 6:11Speaker 1: by a whale exactly. But the thing is okay, So yes,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I understand that. But what if when you got out
- 6:19Speaker 1: of the lake and you put your behind your trailer
- 6:22Speaker 1: and it was just smeared on your canoe. Wouldn't you
- 6:24Speaker 1: feel bad about toting the person's remains with you, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: putting them in your garage, on your canoe, or even worse,
- 6:32Speaker 1: hosing them off at home. Sure, that's I think one
- 6:36Speaker 1: of the other problems. People who aren't grossed out by
- 6:38Speaker 1: it don't want the responsibility of, yeah, somebody's cremated remains
- 6:42Speaker 1: like on their shoe and not knowing what to do
- 6:44Speaker 1: about that. Yeah, that's true. All right, I'm gonna think
- 6:48Speaker 1: hard about this while we take our break and we'll
- 6:49Speaker 1: be right back, okay, just like stars so much so
- 7:14Speaker 1: we talked about places to do it legally in there.
- 7:16Speaker 1: There are plenty of places. The key seems to be
- 7:19Speaker 1: asking permission ahead of time, right. There are places where
- 7:23Speaker 1: if you ask permission ahead of time, they'll say no, no,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and don't you dare do it anyway. Right. One of
- 7:30Speaker 1: those places, that's one of the most popular places to
- 7:34Speaker 1: engage in wildcats scattering sometimes if you do it as
- 7:37Speaker 1: a group, that's a wolfpack wildcat scattering is disney World
- 7:42Speaker 1: in Disneyland. Yeah, theme parks, and of course Disney is
- 7:46Speaker 1: going to be the big daddy. That place means a
- 7:49Speaker 1: lot to a lot of people. And you know people
- 7:53Speaker 1: that go there. We know people that go there many
- 7:57Speaker 1: many times every year of their life and just it's
- 8:01Speaker 1: a part of their fabric and they're like, I want
- 8:04Speaker 1: to be dumped in the Pirates of the Caribbean. That's
- 8:07Speaker 1: where I want to be. That's one of the big ones,
- 8:10Speaker 1: as Pirates of the Caribbean. And it's a small world,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think. And then also the Haunted Mansion is another
- 8:17Speaker 1: big one, and you can kind of understands. Yes, they're
- 8:21Speaker 1: literally called dark rides, but the Pirates of the Caribbean
- 8:26Speaker 1: one and It's a Small World makes sense because you're
- 8:29Speaker 1: dumping the ashes into the water and it's really becoming
- 8:33Speaker 1: part of that ride. The Haunted Mansion in particular, is
- 8:37Speaker 1: a really bad choice because they're probably going to see
- 8:40Speaker 1: you do it. They're probably going to stop the entire ride,
- 8:45Speaker 1: evacuate everyone from the ride. Ye bring in a special
- 8:50Speaker 1: custodial team and vacuum up the ashes and dump them
- 8:54Speaker 1: in the trash. That's what's going to happen. That's where
- 8:57Speaker 1: Grandpa will end up because there's, like he said, there's
- 9:00Speaker 1: cameras everywhere, but people still take this risk. Although I mean,
- 9:07Speaker 1: didn't something in this article say that Disney said that
- 9:09Speaker 1: people don't do this. Yeah, so this article said that
- 9:12Speaker 1: Disney's official stance is that it does not happen. I
- 9:16Speaker 1: saw a twenty eighteen Wall Street Journal article. I should
- 9:20Speaker 1: say I saw a lot of reference to it. I'm
- 9:21Speaker 1: too cheap to spring for the subscription, but apparently in
- 9:25Speaker 1: that article they interviewed people who were with Disney saying like, yes,
- 9:30Speaker 1: this happens a lot, a lot, and here's what happens
- 9:34Speaker 1: when they do that, and Ultimately, the bottom line is,
- 9:38Speaker 1: even if you get away with it, even if you
- 9:40Speaker 1: don't get caught and escorted out of the park and
- 9:42Speaker 1: probably banned for life from any Disney attraction. Yeah, the
- 9:46Speaker 1: cremated remains are going to be swept up one way
- 9:49Speaker 1: or another and thrown in the trash. Your grandpa is
- 9:52Speaker 1: not going to forever be part of the Haunted Mansion,
- 9:55Speaker 1: right because they clean those rides thoroughly and frequently, and
- 9:59Speaker 1: he's not going to there anymore. He's going to end
- 10:01Speaker 1: up in the trash. And is that really where he
- 10:02Speaker 1: wanted to be? Yeah? Yeah, meaning now right, that's what
- 10:09Speaker 1: I saw is basically the bottom line to the whole thing. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: And like you said, you you're probably gonna get kicked out.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I don't even know if they have a public stance,
- 10:19Speaker 1: like official stance on that, because their public stance is like,
- 10:22Speaker 1: no one does that here, right, keep coming, keep coming
- 10:25Speaker 1: the Disney world. You're not when you drag your hand
- 10:28Speaker 1: in the water of the Pirate scribbean, And it's not
- 10:29Speaker 1: just literally full of cremated remains. Maybe a tooth bobbing
- 10:33Speaker 1: up and down here or there's now that would that
- 10:38Speaker 1: would gross me out? Sure? That would be very disturbing.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I still I do see the Pirates of the Caribbean
- 10:44Speaker 1: Rye being the smart one. Though. If you're gonna do
- 10:46Speaker 1: it anyway, if you're such a wildcat that you listen
- 10:48Speaker 1: to this episode and still do it, we guess that's
- 10:52Speaker 1: probably the best way to do it. I want to
- 10:54Speaker 1: be scattered at my camp. Oh yeah, I'm sure of that.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Unless something changes. That seems like a great, great place
- 11:00Speaker 1: to spend eternity. Yeah, way to go, man, it's a
- 11:04Speaker 1: great It's a great thing to settle on. You mean,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I are still trying to figure that one out. Well,
- 11:08Speaker 1: let me know. Maybe me doing it, Okay, I will
- 11:12Speaker 1: if you go. If you guys go down in a
- 11:13Speaker 1: hill of gunfire at a bank robbery or something, well,
- 11:16Speaker 1: if it's gonna be you doing it, then definitely Pirates
- 11:19Speaker 1: of the Caribbean. Right, want me banned from Disney World?
- 11:25Speaker 1: You got anything else? I got nothing else me either.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Wildcats scattering don't do it. Short. Stuff is out. Stuff
