- 0:00Speaker 1: In the same boat.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It's crazy. So how are you anyway?
- 0:03Speaker 3: I'm okay, I'm hold it together.
- 0:07Speaker 2: You hold it together being busy times for you guys, relatively.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I mean I have a I have a five and
- 0:14Speaker 3: a half year old kid, so you're kind of always
- 0:17Speaker 3: just holding it together.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 0:21Speaker 4: I gave it a listen before and part of the
- 0:24Speaker 4: album that is coming out, which is Conflict.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Is it Conflict Day? I'lca Is that right?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Remember who works it's been dusty this morning.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's absolutely It's another album for you guys,
- 0:39Speaker 4: so that's always good thing. What's some You guys are
- 0:42Speaker 4: also known for doing some pretty crazy stuff with promoting
- 0:45Speaker 4: your new albums.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Have you got anything planned for this one?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Oh?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I mean the crazy stuff.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Usually comes more from my bandmate. I'm trying to think,
- 0:55Speaker 3: like if we have anything wacky.
- 0:58Speaker 1: For this one.
- 0:59Speaker 3: In the past, we've some particularly wacky things, like one
- 1:01Speaker 3: time we had I could we hid golden tickets? We
- 1:05Speaker 3: hit a series of tickets in our actual physical vinyl. Yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and they were it was like an ascension of prizes,
- 1:11Speaker 3: so one would be like you'd win like a childhood
- 1:14Speaker 3: photograph of one of us or the other one would
- 1:16Speaker 3: be like, we sent you a bag of our guitar
- 1:21Speaker 3: players cat here. Another one would be we signed our
- 1:25Speaker 3: test pressings in blood and send them to you, because
- 1:27Speaker 3: one of them was we'll fly you from anywhere in
- 1:30Speaker 3: the continental United States. These were only put in US
- 1:32Speaker 3: record stores and then you can just like stay at
- 1:34Speaker 3: one of our houses and hang out with us for
- 1:36Speaker 3: a weekend.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And we actually ended up doing it.
- 1:39Speaker 2: That's pretty well.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We took this guy to Magic Mountain and we like
- 1:42Speaker 3: smoked salvia with him and.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Did all this crazy shit. So I don't think we'll
- 1:47Speaker 1: be doing that again. Yeah, there's nothing quite pretty good.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Why doing day the fans are have to I mean.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I think we we we.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Had a guy uh hug an entire can of chili
- 2:01Speaker 3: like a shot glass and in order to announce ordinary moss.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So it's still keeping it in the in the theme
- 2:10Speaker 2: of all things health.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, it's still the same landscape.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, excellent, excellent.
- 2:17Speaker 4: And also you've done some pretty decent collaborations before with
- 2:22Speaker 4: some big names on eachnail as the Lamb of God
- 2:24Speaker 4: and whatnot.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So are there any collabs on this album? That's coming
- 2:28Speaker 2: out all? Is it just so we did?
- 2:31Speaker 3: We do collaboration albums separately, so we kind of tend
- 2:35Speaker 3: to shy away from features too much on.
- 2:41Speaker 1: On our.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Soul LPs, there's just like some mostly would be like
- 2:48Speaker 3: there's some guests screaming, and then.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Willy from Lamb of God is kind of like our
- 2:55Speaker 1: de facto.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Hey we need a heavy ass riff. We call him
- 3:00Speaker 3: up on the red like rock phone, so he plays
- 3:07Speaker 3: guitar on this song Vibe cop nice. It's psych pretty
- 3:12Speaker 3: punishingly heavy. But no, there's not We kind of will
- 3:17Speaker 3: save those probably for the next collaboration release.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no, it's some I gave it
- 3:24Speaker 4: a couple of them a bit of a listen earlier.
- 3:26Speaker 4: So when you were making Ordinary Loss, was there a
- 3:29Speaker 4: moment where you thought this is emotionally going to ruin people,
- 3:32Speaker 4: but in a good way.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I mean, I guess that's kind of the hope, right,
- 3:37Speaker 3: that it makes some sort of connection with them emotionally.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it is meaningful in some way.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think it seems like people were responding
- 3:49Speaker 3: to it that way.
- 3:50Speaker 4: So you've got good, good response for me listener so far,
- 3:55Speaker 4: so far? Yeah, yeah, it's always nice.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It's always nice to know when you good feverack. Sometimes
- 4:01Speaker 2: it's hard to gage.
- 4:02Speaker 4: So when too, you know, switch, when it's just and
- 4:05Speaker 4: you haven't released full album be out, I guess that's
- 4:06Speaker 4: when you get the full.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Review and.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well now it's kind of like the metric kids,
- 4:15Speaker 3: are you going to have some viral hit and nobody
- 4:18Speaker 3: knows when that's going to happen. So it's like a
- 4:20Speaker 3: song that could perform to me, a song that reaches
- 4:26Speaker 3: your fans and that they like it as much as
- 4:29Speaker 3: your other more beloved songs is a win. When it's
- 4:34Speaker 3: a loss, is it is? It's like if you release
- 4:37Speaker 3: a song, it just doesn't resonate, so thankfully, Yeah, ordinary
- 4:41Speaker 3: loss particularly seems to be resonating with the fans. The
- 4:45Speaker 3: dream is that you can reach new.
- 4:46Speaker 4: People absolutely, and I guess with the platforms these days
- 4:50Speaker 4: that's some technok and the way Spotify do as they
- 4:53Speaker 4: play list you garant. You know, you never know if
- 4:56Speaker 4: some generation whatever they they are now these days, they
- 5:01Speaker 4: come across it and they like it, and then it
- 5:02Speaker 4: does it just goes viral by night pretty much.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's yeah, yeah, it happens.
- 5:06Speaker 4: It's crazy and you see old stuff coming back and
- 5:08Speaker 4: making it they found new stuff.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I mean that's the thing that's so interesting too, is
- 5:14Speaker 3: it would be best if it would feel probably most
- 5:16Speaker 3: gratifying if it was a new song. But it could
- 5:19Speaker 3: happen to you at any time with.
- 5:20Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 5:21Speaker 4: That's so true, and any any musician, any artists who's
- 5:24Speaker 4: got stuff out there. Yeah, And because you guys had
- 5:27Speaker 4: a up their attraction too with you had a couple
- 5:30Speaker 4: of your tracks on video games, which is always a
- 5:32Speaker 4: good one if you can do that.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I mean, we have a.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Song that like if you go onto our Spotify would
- 5:37Speaker 3: be number two or number two, yeah, usually number two
- 5:40Speaker 3: I think, which has the most plays of any song
- 5:43Speaker 3: of Mars. And it was in a a very popular
- 5:46Speaker 3: video game, and then after that it was in a
- 5:53Speaker 3: anime series.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It was licensed from the video game for Netflix.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I see in video you had some to
- 6:00Speaker 4: make going on in a binary loss as well.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of our fans are a lot of
- 6:04Speaker 3: our fans are just very into video game and anime
- 6:06Speaker 3: culture and just the kind of nerd basing culture in general.
- 6:09Speaker 3: But that that that's our biggest song, and that was
- 6:15Speaker 3: like a Lucy track that wasn't even on an album. Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 3: we had to, So I think that there's a lot
- 6:21Speaker 3: of things like that.
- 6:23Speaker 1: To be honest, I would still put.
- 6:26Speaker 3: That song as being the one that would be the
- 6:29Speaker 3: most likely to become a viral hit, even if it
- 6:31Speaker 3: hasn't happened as of yet, because it's got all these
- 6:35Speaker 3: tendrils connecting it to other subcultural things such as anime
- 6:40Speaker 3: and video games, and it's an emotional song and.
- 6:43Speaker 4: You've connected it where you guys of all, bay, I
- 6:46Speaker 4: did notice that it's it did has got that the
- 6:49Speaker 4: lyrics and the graphics that come up, and it's sort
- 6:51Speaker 4: of that subconsciously plies on the minds of your listeners
- 6:54Speaker 4: and connects them in all those other different ways.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Which, yeah, that would be most creatively gratify. And I
- 7:01Speaker 3: think if it was some of the new music, because
- 7:03Speaker 3: when you release new music, you'd always like for it
- 7:05Speaker 3: to touch people and engage them emotionally. But of course I'm
- 7:10Speaker 3: thankful on any level that if if anybody is listening at.
- 7:13Speaker 1: All, so.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Hey, look we're doing if we make someone's life and
- 7:19Speaker 4: world a happier place because of the music we make
- 7:21Speaker 4: that song, it's what it's all about, isn't it.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think so it is. Yeah, honestly, it's the only
- 7:30Speaker 1: job I ever wanted, so I'll take it.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's the thing.
- 7:34Speaker 4: If you can get to do it for your nine
- 7:36Speaker 4: to five and make a little career out of it,
- 7:38Speaker 4: that's even better. Some living, living your best life, living
- 7:41Speaker 4: and dream And it seems like you guys have been
- 7:43Speaker 4: able to do that a fair bit for the most part.
- 7:46Speaker 3: You've had some Yeah, that's how I got to spend
- 7:48Speaker 3: the majority of my adult life is making music.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And that it's amazing. And so do you guys have
- 7:54Speaker 2: plans to do it all?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Oh? Yeah? Next year will be very busy. Yeah, you
- 8:00Speaker 1: have new album.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Will be back in Australia I think ideally in the
- 8:05Speaker 3: fall of twenty six.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Okay, so you're full of awful our fall, so that's September,
- 8:13Speaker 2: that's out spring?
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, spring great.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing is I've been in Australia basically
- 8:21Speaker 3: only in either winter or summer.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and depending on why you know, and winter
- 8:26Speaker 4: those alpums that get really really cold and some.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Are like, oh it's it's warm.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Well, so what what I learned about Australia last tour
- 8:36Speaker 3: that we did there was during.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Your winter, okay, and it was it was very.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Much like Los Angeles in that there's not good infrastructure
- 8:48Speaker 3: for installation and heat. Like a lot of times when
- 8:51Speaker 3: it's hold in LA it's fucking freezing in the houses
- 8:54Speaker 3: and freezing in a venue.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You don't have to have that much insulation.
- 8:58Speaker 2: That's what we were eating.
- 8:59Speaker 4: The know, nothing like that, and there are the houses
- 9:02Speaker 4: are built for like summer, you know, basically big old
- 9:04Speaker 4: greenslanders that get the breeze come through them and it's
- 9:06Speaker 4: like I mean, I mean, yeah, a bait shack and
- 9:08Speaker 4: it's a gorgeous little right across on bait and there's
- 9:11Speaker 4: so much glass in these plays. And when in the
- 9:13Speaker 4: winter time it's like it's cold, it's crazy because it's just.
- 9:17Speaker 1: The coldest times.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I grew up in a cold climate in Seattle, and
- 9:20Speaker 3: I've been all over the world, Like some of the
- 9:21Speaker 3: coldest I've been has been in Los Angeles in the
- 9:24Speaker 3: winter when you live in a house that has no insulation.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So that happened to us. I got sick on tour.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I was like we played some venue in Sydney and
- 9:33Speaker 3: was like fucking freezing in the venue. Yeah, they were
- 9:38Speaker 3: just like, oh, I don't usually. They were just like,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's not usually this cold.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And then the last day of the tour, getting over
- 9:44Speaker 3: a sickness and a day off in Brisbane, we say
- 9:47Speaker 3: this really nice hotel and there's a roof top pool
- 9:49Speaker 3: and I was just like, man, I'm just gonna spend
- 9:51Speaker 3: all day just sunning myself and recuperating and swimming.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And then when I got up there and the pool
- 9:57Speaker 1: fucking freezing and windy and not because they don't really
- 10:01Speaker 1: heat the pool. They're like, it's usually so hot here,
- 10:04Speaker 1: we don't have to eat.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It was that in the summertime.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Was that winter that was your winter?
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:10Speaker 4: No, I mean some of us sometimes in winter it
- 10:13Speaker 4: can be in the you know, the lower thirties and
- 10:15Speaker 4: the high twenties.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It's it just depends.
- 10:17Speaker 4: It's we don't win we are particularly we have some
- 10:22Speaker 4: winters aren't all that cold generally, but they can do.
- 10:26Speaker 2: There are times that it can get so I.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Said, I've said this to many Australians, but see for
- 10:31Speaker 3: us as Californians, Yeah, Australia feels like the most like
- 10:38Speaker 3: California than anywhere else in the world.
- 10:42Speaker 1: So it's very comfortable for us.
- 10:44Speaker 3: It's like what you're describing about how it could be
- 10:47Speaker 3: like yesterday here it's November. It should be it's fucking
- 10:51Speaker 3: freezing everywhere else in the country. Yesterday was thirty thirty
- 10:56Speaker 3: five degrees you know, yeah, fucking warm. Yeah, but I
- 11:02Speaker 3: would feel more cultural shock if I moved to Baltimore.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah, to Texas, and if I moved to Australia.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, true, true, that true.
- 11:11Speaker 3: That it's just very similar, like the vibe, like the
- 11:14Speaker 3: way people eat, the way people are outside.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It's just like it's got a lot to do with
- 11:18Speaker 1: southern California.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and then Melbourne fels a little bit like northern California,
- 11:24Speaker 3: but without all the like danger and bum ship.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And then it's all a bit more aussy and a
- 11:28Speaker 2: bit more Yeah. Yeah, should as they say.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But yeah it's good.
- 11:33Speaker 4: So you'll so you're coming over it in outhuth spring,
- 11:36Speaker 4: So and how long is it du alful? You don't
- 11:38Speaker 4: know you're doing festivals?
- 11:40Speaker 3: No, I think it's headliners, so you know the major cities. Yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 3: maybe maybe we'll do Tazzy and maybe we'll do something
- 11:47Speaker 3: like New Zealand if we get a chance, like we're
- 11:49Speaker 3: in Austroligia.
- 11:50Speaker 2: But yeah, nice, nice, well, I look forward to it.
- 11:53Speaker 2: So it's been nice chatting with you.
- 11:55Speaker 4: You look at and I'm gonna I sage before saying
- 12:01Speaker 4: that I've.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Got my son from school here in about half an hours.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Oh, because what time is it to be there at
- 12:07Speaker 2: at the moment?
- 12:09Speaker 1: Two forty I don't know. I don't know. You guys
- 12:12Speaker 1: add twelve to that, however, you guys, Oh, yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 4: It's nine thirty now in the morning, about about ten
- 12:18Speaker 4: minutes that way, it's eight thirty in the morning.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So we have that. We have this really cool thing
- 12:22Speaker 2: called daylight saving. I live on the border.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we have savings too. I don't like it.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I don't mind. It's just gonna be mindful and you
- 12:29Speaker 2: just yeah, I need to know what you're doing. Got
- 12:31Speaker 2: than that?
- 12:32Speaker 1: Did you guys use a military system for time? Right?
- 12:35Speaker 1: You guys?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Who are you?
- 12:36Speaker 1: Guys are like eighteen hundred hours nineteen years.
- 12:39Speaker 4: It just depends, I mean not strictly like about you know,
- 12:42Speaker 4: twenty four hour time. Yeah, like in the evening, but yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 4: I mean not everywhere. But yeah, it's something that it
- 12:49Speaker 4: is quite common, just depending where you're at but just
- 12:52Speaker 4: confuses a lot of people.
- 12:53Speaker 2: So so it's just the AM and PM so much easier.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the only way I know how to think.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That's twenty four hour time and I still have to
- 13:04Speaker 3: subtract or add twelve to figure out what it is.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Way too hot.
- 13:09Speaker 4: But yeah, well that's yeah, it's been nice farding with you,
- 13:12Speaker 4: and congratulations. As I said on the new single and
- 13:15Speaker 4: the new album coming out as eleventh the.
- 13:17Speaker 2: December, isn't it it comes out? Yep, that's great, awesome, awesome.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Well, I'll be awaiting with bated breath, and you never know,
- 13:24Speaker 4: one of us might do a review on it in
- 13:27Speaker 4: the mag as well, which would be constable. Yeah, if
- 13:30Speaker 4: it's not already it's not already taken on, I put
- 13:32Speaker 4: my hand had not for that one, and I'll let
- 13:34Speaker 4: Chris be know and then yeah do that as well.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And awesome. Will you have a nice weekend and we'll
- 13:43Speaker 2: be we'll be in touch soon
