- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and welcome to another
- 0:21new setting. I'm going to be trying out some
- 0:24different spaces this week since I have 3 days left of this like
- 0:28cottage core vibe. My parents are out right now and
- 0:30I was like, why don't I just record in the main area?
- 0:33The windows are so big and hopefully the lighting is OK.
- 0:37I am recording this a bit late. It is 6:30 PM so the sun is
- 0:40starting to kind of go down, but I think the lighting is going to
- 0:42be like OK anyways, so yes, I am going to Europe as you guys know
- 0:47for a friend's wedding. Europe in a cause he lives is a
- 0:51bit stressful, but this was planned like two years in
- 0:54advance and who could have known?
- 0:57But anyways, yeah, so I am really, really excited to be
- 0:59taking that break. And if you guys do want to keep
- 1:01up with me and you want, like, my opinions on stuff that's
- 1:05happening in pop culture in real time, I do post on my Instagram
- 1:08Stories every once in a while if something like major happens.
- 1:11When I was in Fiji last year, scandal broke.
- 1:13And so even though I wasn't technically working, I was on a
- 1:16vacation with Sean and a bunch of his friends.
- 1:19You know, I was out here, I was posting, I was giving my
- 1:21updates, I was giving my opinions.
- 1:23So definitely keep up with me. My Instagram is at Lauren
- 1:25Meisner under score. So the first story that I have
- 1:28for you guys is that Jules LeBron, who was the creator of
- 1:31the Jameer trend, is struggling to monetize this trend after a
- 1:36random man trademarked the saying before she could.
- 1:40So by now we know the Jameer trend is literally everywhere.
- 1:44It's also like very on LinkedIn. I don't know if anyone else is
- 1:48on LinkedIn. I have to be on LinkedIn for
- 1:50like founder vibes. Oh my God.
- 1:52Like every second post I swear is someone in corporate America
- 1:57posting about how this is Jamir and this is mindful.
- 2:00It is so cringe. It's like the tik tokification
- 2:02of LinkedIn. No one take that.
- 2:04I'm going to make that into a deep dive, actually.
- 2:07OK, so, so many good things have come out of Jamir for Jules,
- 2:10right? She gained over a million
- 2:12followers in just a couple of weeks.
- 2:15She's now able to pay for the rest of her transition, as she
- 2:18said in one video. And most recently, she also
- 2:21revealed that she was able to get one of her best friends out
- 2:24of a really bad living situation because of all the money that
- 2:27she's been making from the TikTok creator fund on these
- 2:29videos. So she was able to move her best
- 2:31friend into her house, which is just so sweet.
- 2:34But now, just a few weeks after Jules posted her first viral
- 2:37video using demure, a random man in Colorado has trademarked the
- 2:41catch phrase, very demure, very mindful, preventing jewels from
- 2:45further making money on the trend in terms of merch or even
- 2:48brand deals that would want her to use that saying.
- 2:52And maybe they would want to have it, you know, in the video
- 2:55itself or something like that. Like it just limits her
- 2:57commercial viability for using that saying so much.
- 3:00Now, interestingly, this same man, according to Diet Prada,
- 3:04also trademarked or has tried to trademark several other catch
- 3:09phrases related to the NFL. So he's tried to trademark Let's
- 3:13Ride Go Broncos, Let's Ride and Take Command as examples.
- 3:18So Jules revealed that the trademark was taken.
- 3:22She revealed this in a TikTok video that has now been deleted.
- 3:25She said she feels like she really dropped the ball because
- 3:27she wanted this moment for her to really be the thing that,
- 3:30like, helped her, you know, complete her transition and help
- 3:33her family out. Now, it is important to note
- 3:36that this man does not own the trademark yet.
- 3:38It is still pending. So now there are literally like
- 3:42hundreds if not thousands of people on TikTok that are making
- 3:45videos, commenting, getting in touch with Jules, trying to
- 3:48explain to her and give her advice and help.
- 3:51And notably, a creator named Real Lucas.
- 3:54Not vibing right now, actually trademarked.
- 3:56Very demure, very cutesy, and she made a video saying like
- 4:00this video is for jewels. I know you're going through a
- 4:02lot right now. I know that asshole trademarked,
- 4:05very demure, very mindful eye trademarked, very demure, very
- 4:08cutesy, and I want to transfer it to you.
- 4:11So can you guys get this video to Jewels, which is just so
- 4:14sweet. So I think they're in the
- 4:15process now. She made like a little update.
- 4:17They're in the process now of transferring that trademark free
- 4:20of charge to Jewels, which is very, very sweet.
- 4:23But this is just so classic, don't you guys think?
- 4:25This is so classic. Some man, I'm assuming he's a
- 4:29white man. I saw people calling him a white
- 4:30man. I assume he's a white man just
- 4:33coming out here and taking this thing from this trans woman who
- 4:38is literally just trying to get by.
- 4:40And, and obviously it was going to either make his own merch or
- 4:45something off of it or, you know, try and sell it back to
- 4:48jewels. So it's just so exploitative and
- 4:52so disgusting. And I know this is just kind of
- 4:54how it works in business, but this particular situation is so
- 4:58beyond icky. And I really, really hope that
- 5:02Jules is able to get at least something out of this.
- 5:05Like I hope that even if that guys trademark goes through, I
- 5:08feel like it, I feel like it might not.
- 5:09I don't know how it works if things become like public
- 5:12outrage, you know, but like even if that trademark goes through,
- 5:16I hope that she can get very demyour a very cutesy.
- 5:20I hope that she can still use these phrases commercially
- 5:23somehow. You know, they're technically
- 5:25already kind of like in use, which I know is to her benefit.
- 5:28So I don't know, but I'll keep you guys posted if there are any
- 5:31other updates. OK, And the last story that I
- 5:33have for you guys, book talk is coming for a commentary creator,
- 5:37Mina Lee after her review of my brilliant friend.
- 5:41So for contacts, my brilliant friend was voted the number one
- 5:44book of the 21st century by the New York Times critics.
- 5:48So Mina read it and she made a TikTok like review on it and she
- 5:52said she found that the book, like the way it was written was
- 5:54very impersonal. She said that the narrator was
- 5:57emotionally distant and because of that she didn't really care
- 6:00about what was happening. She did say that the friendship
- 6:03between Elena and Leela, I think that's how you say their names.
- 6:06I'm really sorry if that is not was, you know, very emotional,
- 6:10beautifully written. Like she was like, I really felt
- 6:11that this book is one of four in like, a series about the
- 6:16complicated intensity of female friendship.
- 6:19And I think it's really interesting that her review is
- 6:23getting so much backlash. I mean, we know that book talk
- 6:26is one of the scariest corners of the Internet, and it's seeped
- 6:29into Twitter, too. So Mina actually doesn't have
- 6:32Twitter anymore because of, like, how toxic it can be.
- 6:35She's actually deleted Twitter, but she is all over Twitter
- 6:38right now because people are in shock that she didn't like this
- 6:40book. And one of the most common
- 6:42criticisms is that she must have not understood it.
- 6:45And that is why I wanted to talk about this story specifically
- 6:48because I was watching a video like I was.
- 6:51I was watching all of the criticism come in the backlash
- 6:54and just thinking like this is actually insane.
- 6:56This is about a book like this is.
- 6:58This is not about anything like that serious.
- 7:01And then I saw a video from Anastasia Garcia and she made
- 7:06such a good point. She was questioning the backlash
- 7:08and she said. Why does disliking something
- 7:11automatically mean that you didn't understand it and then
- 7:14also didn't have the capability to understand it?
- 7:17I will say I haven't read the books.
- 7:19I've been planning on it, so this isn't like a discussion of
- 7:21the quality of the books. But I've seen so many stitches
- 7:24of this video, so many videos about this video, so much
- 7:27discourse on Twitter, which is, you know what I mean, where
- 7:31people are saying that she's stupid and that she FC doesn't
- 7:34get it. While I think some of it was
- 7:37pointed directly to what she said in her review.
- 7:40So I'm not really discussing those things.
- 7:42It's very interesting that there's like this assumption
- 7:44when people don't get they don't understand the love of something
- 7:50that means they don't understand the material, period.
- 7:53We're in this weird time in Internet culture where if you
- 7:57have an opinion on something like this, I'm going to, I'm
- 8:00going to like make that caveat on something that is as low
- 8:04stakes as like if you like a book or not, you know, But
- 8:06obviously this book means a lot to people.
- 8:08So if you have an opinion that on art, for example, that like
- 8:11goes against the grain, that goes against the common opinion.
- 8:14The general consensus online, especially on TikTok, it's like
- 8:18the criticism is always you're not smart enough to understand
- 8:22it. And that argument reminds me of
- 8:24how people also weaponize morality in online spaces as
- 8:29well. There's just so much
- 8:31performance. Like people use these arguments.
- 8:35I understand. I'm sure that book moved you.
- 8:37I'm sure it was very important to you.
- 8:39But people can have other opinions about something as
- 8:42subjective as art. And it doesn't mean that they're
- 8:47stupid and it doesn't mean that they don't understand it.
- 8:50And people are using these arguments to like, assert their
- 8:52own intelligence and to make themselves feel better about
- 8:56liking the book because obviously that opinion saying,
- 8:59like, I felt it was emotionally distant and it wasn't, you know,
- 9:03it was kind of impersonal. If you really liked that book
- 9:06and you're like, you know, singing its praises and you it
- 9:08really moved you, it feels like, I suppose an attack on how you
- 9:13perceived the book and on your intelligence.
- 9:16And so therefore, everyone's like, well, you just didn't
- 9:18understand it. And I just so strongly disagree
- 9:21with like the criticism against Mina specifically.
- 9:25She is so intelligent. She is so thoughtful in her
- 9:29content. If you have ever watched one of
- 9:31her videos, you know, she is one of the best commentary creators
- 9:35on YouTube, full stop. Like she is making quality
- 9:38content because she is so perceptive and so intelligent.
- 9:45She is just like the opposite of someone who doesn't understand
- 9:49media and art in my opinion. OK you guys, I actually finished
- 9:54the episode and I was starting to edit it and then Annabelle
- 9:57messaged me and she was like emergency Alex Earl has
- 10:00addressed her old Ask FM tweets. And I was messages post and I
- 10:04was like, Oh my God. OK, so I've turned the camera
- 10:07back on. I hope that everything's fine.
- 10:09I hope the lighting's fine. But anyways, OK, so Alex Earl
- 10:13has finally addressed her old Ask FM posts where she said the
- 10:17N word multiple times. Over the last couple of weeks,
- 10:20several screenshots have resurfaced from posts that Alex
- 10:23made back in like the mid twenty 10s.
- 10:27So the way that this came about, it was kind of in the middle of
- 10:30the Brooks Schofield stuff. Over the last maybe week, it's
- 10:33really picked up and more and more people were starting to
- 10:35talk about it. I didn't want to address it
- 10:38until she made a statement. I figured she would make a
- 10:41statement only because I kept seeing that she would send like
- 10:45or her lawyers would send cease and desist and legal letters to
- 10:49people that were talking about it.
- 10:50And honestly my mental health can just not handle that even if
- 10:54it's a bullshit cease and desist.
- 10:55Like I just could not handle getting any type of like legal
- 10:59letter related to this. So I was like you know what, I'm
- 11:02just going to wait and see how this plays out.
- 11:05So anyways, she has now addressed it.
- 11:07So she posted this on Instagram stories and also TikTok stories,
- 11:11interestingly not on her grid and didn't make a video about it
- 11:16she wrote. A couple of weeks ago,
- 11:17screenshots surfaced from my old Ask FM account showing me using
- 11:21a slur in the summer 2014. I am taking accountability and
- 11:25want to make it clear that I was 13 years old and did not
- 11:27understand the deeply offensive meaning behind that word.
- 11:30That is no excuse for using that word in any context or at any
- 11:33age. That is absolutely not the way I
- 11:35speak or what I stand for. I am deeply sorry that my words
- 11:38have hurt many and have led people to believe that I have
- 11:41any prejudice in my heart. I promise you that could not be
- 11:43further from the truth. My platform has always been
- 11:45focused on positivity, entertainment and uplifting
- 11:48others, and I will continue to do so.
- 11:50I am sincerely sorry to those I have offended.
- 11:53I regret how I handled the situation, allowing too many
- 11:56people to talk me out of saying something for too long.
- 11:58I wasn't sure how to handle it and unfortunately the advice I
- 12:01was given, although well intended, was wrong.
- 12:04There is no one to blame but myself for not standing my
- 12:07ground and going with my gut to speak out right away.
- 12:10So then she addresses two rumors.
- 12:12The first rumor is that she trademarked these screenshots.
- 12:16The reason why people thought this was because the Do We Know
- 12:19Them podcast said that they got a cease and desist for their
- 12:23subreddit, which actually has nothing to do with the podcast.
- 12:25Like like fans, right, can make subreddits for creators, for
- 12:31influencers, for celebrities and for podcasts.
- 12:34And so they're like, we didn't even make this.
- 12:36And so like we have no control. But those screenshots were
- 12:39posted in the subreddit, apparently, allegedly they got a
- 12:42cease and desist or some type of legal letter from Alex's team.
- 12:46And in it, one of the things that it said that these
- 12:49screenshots being posted on Reddit was violating was like
- 12:52trademark arrangement or something like that.
- 12:55And so, sorry, I obviously had no time to prep this story, so
- 12:57I'm just going off what I remember.
- 12:59So everybody was like, Oh my God, did she trademark or
- 13:03someone on her team trademark these screenshots so that they
- 13:08could send like cease and desist and things like that get them
- 13:10taken down. So she said that's not true.
- 13:12The other rumor she says is not true is that Larsa Pippen from
- 13:16Real Housewives of Miami, her brand like spoke out and said we
- 13:19will no longer be working with Alex Earl.
- 13:21And I don't know if that was fact or not, or if that was like
- 13:24a doctored or like a fake screenshot that was going
- 13:27around, like Instagram story of Larsa's that was going around.
- 13:30I didn't see it. But she says that was not true.
- 13:32She's never worked with that brand and they were not in talks
- 13:35to do partnerships with it. And then she finishes by saying,
- 13:38regardless of what has been said online, I wanted to come on here
- 13:41to address the facts and most importantly, apologize.
- 13:44So that's Alex's response to the Ask FM stuff.
- 13:49And I think it was strategic for sure for her to not post that on
- 13:54grid, to not make a video of it. I think it was definitely
- 13:58written by a team, but I wouldn't be surprised.
- 13:59She definitely has a big team around her.
- 14:01I don't know, like when the Brooks stuff happened, you know,
- 14:04I I said like, it just keeps fucking happening.
- 14:07And I told you guys about how one of my friends was like, I
- 14:10literally cannot trust any white influencer anymore.
- 14:14And yeah, anyways, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 14:19Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 14:22and subscribe. I love you guys and I will talk
- 14:24to you tomorrow. Bye.
