Speaker 3: Lee for any of the updates. Lisa and Hollis, so
• 1:44
Speaker 3: interesting interesting situation today. We now have football.
• 1:52
Speaker 4: Okay, we we we finally finally have football.
• 1:57
Speaker 3: But Hollis, there's there's some legal there's some how did
• 2:02
Speaker 3: we get here? You, being the man who knows all
• 2:05
Speaker 3: the legal pieces to this, help everybody who's listening explain
• 2:12
Speaker 3: to them how we got back to this place.
• 2:15
Speaker 5: Okay, so today the Supreme Court of the Western Supreme
• 2:19
Speaker 5: Court finally made their decisions, and basically how we got here.
• 2:22
Speaker 5: We had injunction again, we had the whole playoff Tobacco.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: I'm sure everybody who's listening or aware of Hopston Sports
• 2:28
Speaker 5: in West Virginia is aware of that. As far as
• 2:30
Speaker 5: like the reclass system, and it kind of screwed up
• 2:33
Speaker 5: the point system and they didn't kind of know where
• 2:37
Speaker 5: to go far as cding and placing people who should
• 2:39
Speaker 5: be in the playoffs who should not be in the
• 2:40
Speaker 5: playoffs in the four divisions. So from that we had
• 2:44
Speaker 5: injunctions fouled in Wood County, we had injunctions filed in
• 2:47
Speaker 5: Mason County, and I even think there was more injunctions
• 2:51
Speaker 5: to be found, but the main ones were in Wood
• 2:53
Speaker 5: in Mason County. Basically in Wood County they wanted the
• 2:58
Speaker 5: point system changed, and Mason County they wanted to play
• 3:01
Speaker 5: in game. And the wv SSAC they found a rint
• 3:06
Speaker 5: of prohibition of those injunctions. So basically what they wanted
• 3:11
Speaker 5: to do was just, hey, squash those injunctions that were
• 3:14
Speaker 5: ruled in those county circuit courts and just come back
• 3:17
Speaker 5: to the original format that we laid out as a
• 3:19
Speaker 5: wv SA SAC. So today, I think it was today
• 3:22
Speaker 5: or yesterday, the Supreme Court finally made the ruling which
• 3:26
Speaker 5: kind of held up the playoffs for the past week
• 3:28
Speaker 5: week and a half. And basically the Supreme Court they
• 3:31
Speaker 5: have some case law president, so basically what they said
• 3:35
Speaker 5: is a general rule the court should not interfere with
• 3:38
Speaker 5: the internal affairs of school activities, commissions or associations. So
• 3:43
Speaker 5: basically what that means is that as a general rule
• 3:47
Speaker 5: to court, they basically the wv S SAC has carte
• 3:51
Speaker 5: blanche to do as they will as far as reclassification
• 3:54
Speaker 5: far as the points system, and they can lay it
• 3:56
Speaker 5: out however they be in best for this. Just to
• 4:01
Speaker 5: give you some more context than this is directly from
• 4:04
Speaker 5: the Supreme Court ruling. The order that was issued again,
• 4:08
Speaker 5: I think it was today or yesterday, and this is quote.
• 4:11
Speaker 5: We have repeatedly held that the manner in which the
• 4:14
Speaker 5: WVSSA applies its rule is not subject to the judicial review.
• 4:20
Speaker 5: Decisions properly within the purview of the legislative grant of
• 4:24
Speaker 5: authority of the wv SSA seek under the West Virginia Code.
• 4:29
Speaker 5: I won't give you the code number. Are not subject
• 4:31
Speaker 5: to judicial review. End quote. It's based on commission of
• 4:35
Speaker 5: the Webster case. It took place in twenty eleven. So again,
• 4:40
Speaker 5: this was fairly simple ruling. This is playing language. I mean,
• 4:43
Speaker 5: this is you know, these legal documents can be very,
• 4:47
Speaker 5: very complex to understand, but this was one of the
• 4:49
Speaker 5: more simpler ones from the West Virginia Supreme Court. So
• 4:53
Speaker 5: basically said, hey, WVSSC is within their authority to do
• 4:58
Speaker 5: as they will longest where long as they're acting within
• 5:01
Speaker 5: the legislative of boundaries of their duty.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: Okay, So any other me, being the simplest person in
• 5:08
Speaker 3: the room, I'm so what you're telling me iss SAC
• 5:14
Speaker 3: can do really basically whatever they want.
• 5:17
  Speaker 6: That's what I think as.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: And nobody can necessarily criticize, critique it.
• 5:24
Speaker 5: Well long or what long, as long as they're not
• 5:28
Speaker 5: acting outside of the scope of their authority. So and
• 5:32
Speaker 5: I and I'm guessing from what this says is that
• 5:35
Speaker 5: far as reclassifying, far as what point system is going
• 5:39
Speaker 5: to be used, and all that, that's within their escort,
• 5:42
  Speaker 5: within the authority of the w E, S, S a C. Now,
• 5:45
Speaker 5: if they go outside of that, then it's subject to
• 5:47
Speaker 5: be reviewed by court. The longest they're acting within the
• 5:50
Speaker 5: scope of their authority, you know, it is what it
• 5:53
Speaker 5: is at this point. So I mean and and and again,
• 5:57
Speaker 5: them setting rules, them telling who can be in a
• 6:00
Speaker 5: them using them saying what number, excuse me, what point system,
• 6:04
Speaker 5: the mathematics and all that that's within the scope. So
• 6:08
Speaker 5: they're they're allowed to do it.
• 6:09
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 6:10
Speaker 7: So I understand the ruling, and I understand that, you know,
• 6:13
Speaker 7: they have the authority to to change and and do
• 6:16
Speaker 7: things that will My question is, how does it go
• 6:19
Speaker 7: on this long? How were there so many injunctions filed
• 6:21
Speaker 7: in so many counties with judges that had no knowledge
• 6:26
Speaker 7: of this type of you know, I guess I want
• 6:31
Speaker 7: to say, this type of effect they have that the
• 6:34
  Speaker 7: w V S s a C. Has say and whatever
• 6:36
Speaker 7: they want to do. They can do whatever they want
• 6:38
Speaker 7: and no one can really stop them. Why couldn't any
• 6:40
Speaker 7: other judge see that and put a stop to all
• 6:43
Speaker 7: this earlier before it got to this point.
• 6:47
Speaker 5: That is an excellent question. And as I've read the document,
• 6:50
Speaker 5: that's I'm telling you, as as I'm reading this document,
• 6:53
Speaker 5: that's the exact same thing I came up with. But
• 6:56
Speaker 5: but but I would say, and I and I hesitate
• 7:00
Speaker 5: to say as a political matter, but I would say,
• 7:03
Speaker 5: those judges are acting in the best interests of the
• 7:06
Speaker 5: people in which they serving that county. You see what
• 7:09
  Speaker 5: I'm saying. So I think they're they're they're they're thinking
• 7:12
Speaker 5: of it from that purview and not looking at it holistically,
• 7:16
Speaker 5: regarding of what the powers that the UH to the
• 7:22
  Speaker 5: w B S s a C has or may not have.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: And in addition, you know, this isn't necessarily a common
• 7:27
Speaker 5: law state, so things aren't necessarily ruled necessarily legislatively. First
• 7:33
Speaker 5: you know, judges in some instances can't set precedence. However,
• 7:37
Speaker 5: you know, again, when it goes to the highest court,
• 7:40
Speaker 5: they're gonna they're gonna look at it from a holistic
• 7:42
Speaker 5: view and not you know, from the view of the
• 7:44
Speaker 5: county in which they.
• 7:44
Speaker 3: Said, hollis okay me again, I'm looking at the athlete, okay.
• 7:53
Speaker 3: And when I when I'm thinking about a sport that
• 7:58
Speaker 3: pretty much did every thing possible for me, right and
• 8:04
Speaker 3: I had coaches who yelled and screamed and told me
• 8:06
Speaker 3: to do this, told me to do that.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: I didn't want to do any of those things.
• 8:10
Speaker 3: I've done them right like, because that's the structure of it.
• 8:15
Speaker 3: To me, when I'm looking at football and listening to
• 8:19
Speaker 3: even the legal side of football, I'm like, I didn't
• 8:22
Speaker 3: even know there was a legal side necessarily, you know
• 8:24
Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Like it never that never, it never
• 8:29
Speaker 3: got there. When I was playing, it was just playing ball.
• 8:33
Speaker 3: And I'm looking at this situation and I'm trying to
• 8:35
Speaker 3: figure out as a student athlete. Now I'm thinking, Okay,
• 8:41
  Speaker 3: now I got a game. I didn't have a game
• 8:44
Speaker 3: last week. Do I know what happened? Do I know
• 8:46
Speaker 3: why I don't have a game, and now all of
• 8:48
Speaker 3: a sudden, I'm getting ready to go to basketball, but
• 8:51
Speaker 3: you know what, I gotta play. I got a football
• 8:53
Speaker 3: game this week. How like, how does that? I just
• 8:56
Speaker 3: don't know. I'm not really asking you this as a
• 8:59
Speaker 3: true question, but this is what bothers me. I just
• 9:02
Speaker 3: don't see how we are teaching the young athletes the
• 9:06
Speaker 3: proper structure, the proper lessons that they were supposed to
• 9:10
Speaker 3: learn and supposed to get from the sport man.
• 9:13
  Speaker 4: I just don't I.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: Just don't think, well, you know what, I think it's
• 9:17
Speaker 5: expanded at this point, right because I think what athletes
• 9:20
Speaker 5: are learning now is that things are as much as
• 9:22
Speaker 5: we you know, have our you know, integrity, as much
• 9:26
Speaker 5: as we have the lessons that we learned on the
• 9:29
Speaker 5: court or on the field, on the court, off the field,
• 9:31
Speaker 5: off the court. That there's also a political side to
• 9:34
Speaker 5: this that I don't think necessarily we were pretty to
• 9:38
Speaker 5: when we played because it wasn't it was kind of
• 9:40
Speaker 5: kept behind called doors, who didn't get as much publicity.
• 9:43
Speaker 5: But now everything's sort of out Nope, So I think
• 9:45
Speaker 5: you know, it's you know, we're adding lessons if you
• 9:48
Speaker 5: if you will, and these are tough lessons because the
• 9:51
Speaker 5: thing that bothered me the most about this is that
• 9:53
Speaker 5: when I look at schools like Capital, when I look
• 9:56
Speaker 5: at schools like Saint Aubus who were told that they
• 9:58
Speaker 5: were going to be or had the glimmer of hope
• 10:00
Speaker 5: that they made the playoffs, and then they have to
• 10:02
Speaker 5: walk that back. The kids were ready, I'm sure they
• 10:05
Speaker 5: were practicing, and they were excited about another opportunity, another
• 10:08
Speaker 5: bite at the apple. But now that's not going to happen, right. Well,
• 10:11
Speaker 5: I think that's the thing that bothers me the most
• 10:13
  Speaker 5: about this.
• 10:14
Speaker 7: Well, and I'll tell you another aspect of it that
• 10:16
Speaker 7: really bothered me and Carl and I had this conversation
• 10:18
Speaker 7: before we came on air, Hollis was the fact that
• 10:22
Speaker 7: there was a playing game scheduled for Tuesday evening, according
• 10:25
Speaker 7: to one of the injunctions, I think the one in
• 10:27
Speaker 7: Wood County correct, and I'm sorry. Mason and Tulsa and
• 10:32
Speaker 7: Saint Mary's were scheduled to play a playing game last night,
• 10:36
Speaker 7: Tuesday evening at Herbert Hoover High School. But then the
• 10:39
Speaker 7: Supreme Court ruling came out about two hours before the kickoff,
• 10:43
Speaker 7: of course, and Saint Mary's was already in Elkview before
• 10:47
  Speaker 7: being sent home.
• 10:49
  Speaker 5: So.
• 10:51
Speaker 7: Why would that even be on the table if the
• 10:54
Speaker 7: ruling had Like, why would the coach take his team
• 10:57
Speaker 7: travel to Elkview, you know, tell their tell us team
• 11:01
Speaker 7: we're going to do this playing game when the ruling
• 11:03
Speaker 7: hadn't really come out yet. I mean, you talk about
• 11:06
Speaker 7: broken hearts going back to to you know, back to
• 11:08
  Speaker 7: their hometown. That's a that's a hard lesson. If we're
• 11:12
Speaker 7: going to talk about hard lessons to learn.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: And how do you and how do you how do
• 11:16
Speaker 3: you readjust and get ready to play that game?
• 11:19
Speaker 4: Three days later? Four days later?
• 11:21
Speaker 5: The ain't no game.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: Now right right there?
• 11:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, one of the teams is done. So one of
• 11:26
Speaker 5: them thieves has told me out a lot of other
• 11:28
Speaker 5: ones probably in right, yeah, I think.
• 11:31
  Speaker 4: And that's crushing. That's crushing.
• 11:33
Speaker 3: That is crushing to a team, the individual players who
• 11:38
Speaker 3: thought that they were in and now someone's going to
• 11:40
Speaker 3: tell them they're not playing.
• 11:42
Speaker 7: And I do hope, I do hope, Paula, is that
• 11:44
Speaker 7: the head coach told them, you know up front, hey guys,
• 11:47
Speaker 7: we're going to make this trip. There's no guarantee, you
• 11:50
Speaker 7: know that we're going. But but you know, they had
• 11:52
Speaker 7: to have their hopes up. They're on a bus, they're
• 11:54
Speaker 7: headed to elk Fu. They're gonna they're you know, they're thinking, okay,
• 11:57
Speaker 7: if we if we've gone this far, we're.
• 11:59
Speaker 6: Probably going to play right.
• 12:02
Speaker 3: I mean to me, I look at that, like, no,
• 12:04
Speaker 3: if we're if we're getting on the bus. Everything about
• 12:08
Speaker 3: this bus and this bus ride is we're playing a game.
• 12:12
Speaker 5: And everything was tentative though, so nothing nothing far as
• 12:16
Speaker 5: the playing games, everything, all the information that came out,
• 12:20
Speaker 5: it all stated very.
• 12:21
Speaker 4: You don't get on the bus.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: You're not You're not you know, you don't get on
• 12:25
Speaker 3: the bus and and head somewhere and be tenanted.
• 12:27
Speaker 6: So who missed the memo?
• 12:29
Speaker 7: I mean, like, what, what's the head coach? Maybe of
• 12:31
Speaker 7: Saint Mary's confused because you know.
• 12:34
Speaker 5: Like, I don't think. I think what happened is that
• 12:36
Speaker 5: they just had to go ahead and prepare it. They
• 12:38
Speaker 5: had to. I think what their mindset and and again
• 12:41
Speaker 5: I'm not speaking for them, I'm just you know, thinking
• 12:43
Speaker 5: out loud. Their mindset had to be like, well, look,
• 12:47
Speaker 5: you know it's tentitive and this is the schedule, so
• 12:49
Speaker 5: we need to go ahead. And get prepared to play,
• 12:51
Speaker 5: so because we don't want to say, we don't want
• 12:53
Speaker 5: to sit at home and not play and not travel
• 12:55
Speaker 5: and not do the things. And then the report, then
• 12:57
Speaker 5: the Supreme Court ruler comes out and said, hey, we're
• 12:59
Speaker 5: gon and follow the Mason County injunction. So I think
• 13:02
Speaker 5: they were just they had to go regardless of kind
• 13:05
Speaker 5: of what happened. And I'm sure those coaches in the
• 13:07
Speaker 5: administration let the team know that, hey, this is Tendaby anyway.
• 13:12
  Speaker 6: That's a tough point.
• 13:14
Speaker 3: I don't know how to be tentatively prepared for a
• 13:17
  Speaker 3: football game. I just I don't know how a coach
• 13:21
Speaker 3: makes that case. And I don't think he made that case.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: I think he thought that there was a game and
• 13:27
  Speaker 3: we're traveling to it. There's there's no way, man, there's
• 13:30
Speaker 3: no there's no way.
• 13:31
Speaker 5: But I'm saying but but I think he had to
• 13:34
Speaker 5: know or administrate. I won't put it all on the coach.
• 13:36
Speaker 5: I would say the athletic directors and administration had to know, like, look,
• 13:41
Speaker 5: this is sort of a fifty to fifty deal. Because
• 13:43
Speaker 5: the ruling has it came out. So because the ruling
• 13:45
Speaker 5: has it came out, and it was being delayed so
• 13:47
Speaker 5: much that hey, we need to go ahead and get
• 13:49
Speaker 5: prepared to play this game. But there's also a chance
• 13:51
Speaker 5: that this might not happen. Okay, So I think they
• 13:53
Speaker 5: had to know that, and I think they had to
• 13:55
Speaker 5: communicate that to the parents and everybody. But all that all,
• 14:00
Speaker 5: but even with all that, it still doesn't disappoint least,
• 14:03
Speaker 5: I means, still hurts. You know, it's.
• 14:05
Speaker 7: Devastated, right, And wouldn't you think coll Us even if
• 14:08
Speaker 7: they had come out and upheld that ruling and the
• 14:10
Speaker 7: playing games were going to happen, they probably wouldn't have
• 14:13
Speaker 7: played them last night. They probably would have rescheduled for
• 14:17
Speaker 7: tonight or even tomorrow night. Correct, I mean, give them notice,
• 14:21
  Speaker 7: wouldn't they?
• 14:22
Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, But I think if they were all on
• 14:24
Speaker 5: the bus getting prepared to play, I think they was
• 14:26
Speaker 5: just I think they would have probably just went ahead
• 14:28
Speaker 5: and knocked it out. But because again I don't know
• 14:31
Speaker 5: if the Supreme Court would have had any say when. Yeah,
• 14:36
Speaker 5: they spoke on when the game should be played out,
• 14:39
Speaker 5: But I think what we can do, and again, because
• 14:42
Speaker 5: this says it, it says, you know, the decision properly
• 14:46
Speaker 5: within the purview of legislative Grand Authority of the WB
• 14:50
Speaker 5: S SAC. I think we need to move forward, look
• 14:53
Speaker 5: at that legislative authority, see exactly what that is, and
• 14:57
Speaker 5: how can that be better worded? How can that be better? Uh,
• 15:03
Speaker 5: how can that let's say, the authority maybe be restricted
• 15:07
Speaker 5: or maybe be expanded so stuff like this does not
• 15:10
Speaker 5: happen again, because this has been like I said, wester
• 15:13
Speaker 5: Unior High school football this season and again, as far
• 15:17
Speaker 5: as I can remember, this is the worst just overall
• 15:21
Speaker 5: season that I've ever experienced in West Virginia high school football.
• 15:24
Speaker 5: I mean, it's been absolutely dreadful and now and again
• 15:27
Speaker 5: I'm not talking about the players or the performances. I'm
• 15:29
Speaker 5: just saying, with all this stuff in the mix, it's
• 15:31
  Speaker 5: almost unwatchable.
• 15:33
Speaker 4: And and and hollis to to your point.
• 15:35
Speaker 3: I had this conversation earlier today with a couple of
• 15:38
Speaker 3: a couple of different people in conversation and talking about, Okay,
• 15:45
Speaker 3: let's just be real, where is football?
• 15:47
Speaker 4: Where is football going? Where is it going?
• 15:51
Speaker 3: How how does it get like quote other sports like
• 15:55
Speaker 3: you don't have all these issues. Every time we get
• 15:58
Speaker 3: to a new football season, year after year after year,
• 16:01
Speaker 3: it just seems to get crazier every year, and and and.
• 16:07
Speaker 4: The question becomes, Okay, so who is in charge of that?
• 16:10
Speaker 4: Is that? Is that the s SAC, is that the coaches,
• 16:13
Speaker 4: is that the parents?
• 16:14
Speaker 7: Is that they they rain, They're totally in charge.
• 16:20
Speaker 6: And here's a question I'll throw to both of you guys.
• 16:23
Speaker 7: So now that they've got this basically free pass to
• 16:27
Speaker 7: do what they like with the point system, are they
• 16:31
Speaker 7: going to do anything? I mean, are they just going
• 16:33
Speaker 7: to be like, Okay, well this is you know, we
• 16:34
Speaker 7: can do whatever we want. We're gonna see if this
• 16:36
Speaker 7: works again next year.
• 16:37
Speaker 5: Look my thing is and if you don't mind, I'll
• 16:39
Speaker 5: go ahead and go like, you have to change it,
• 16:42
Speaker 5: Like I'm looking at the playoff schedule like this has
• 16:45
Speaker 5: to change. I'm looking at the playoff schedule for Quada.
• 16:48
Speaker 5: You have two, not one, but you have Hecks Build
• 16:53
Speaker 5: they are eight in the playoffs. I know you have
• 16:57
Speaker 5: Muscleming two and eight in the playoffs. You have University
• 17:00
Speaker 5: four and six, you have Parkersburg four and six, you
• 17:04
Speaker 5: have Capital Midlands five and five. So basically you got one, two, three,
• 17:08
Speaker 5: four five teams in a playoffs with losing or uh
• 17:13
Speaker 5: tied records. Like you excuse me, not five seven, but
• 17:18
Speaker 5: that was in or losing records when you when.
• 17:21
Speaker 7: You yeah, but it was inevitable when you only have
• 17:24
Speaker 7: that many teams in a in a bracket or in
• 17:26
Speaker 7: a classification, you're going to have teams that are, you know,
• 17:29
Speaker 7: on the losing end of this of this, of their
• 17:32
Speaker 7: records and and but that everybody makes the playoffs. They
• 17:35
Speaker 7: had to have known when they created this that that
• 17:38
Speaker 7: was going to be part of the problem that was
• 17:39
  Speaker 7: going to happen.
• 17:41
Speaker 5: They necessarily create this, but what happens is they had it.
• 17:44
Speaker 5: They had that. I think it was originally twenty eight
• 17:46
Speaker 5: teams in quality, and then the injunctions from that, from
• 17:50
Speaker 5: the teams getting reclassed and everything like that, then that
• 17:53
Speaker 5: brought it down the sixteen. So I think they're going
• 17:55
Speaker 5: to have to figure out a way again. They made
• 17:58
Speaker 5: the structure about how they determine which team's going with
• 18:02
Speaker 5: class a little bit vague and it left too much
• 18:05
Speaker 5: room for interpretations. So now they're gonna have to tighten that,
• 18:09
Speaker 5: and they're gonna have to at least you you're gonna
• 18:11
Speaker 5: have to at least get twenty five teams in Quada
• 18:14
Speaker 5: at the very least. So the lead.
• 18:17
Speaker 3: Okay, but okay, so let's say we get twenty five teams,
• 18:19
Speaker 3: so it's one gonna play twenty five because at this
• 18:21
Speaker 3: point play but in quad but in Kuada. Okay, right
• 18:26
Speaker 3: now it's one versus sixteen? Really yeah, one versus sixteen?
• 18:31
Speaker 3: Am I going to that game?
• 18:33
Speaker 5: Like nobody's going to that?
• 18:35
  Speaker 7: Well?
• 18:36
  Speaker 6: How many guys?
• 18:37
  Speaker 4: I mean, I mean.
• 18:38
Speaker 6: The fans of the two guitar?
• 18:40
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 18:41
Speaker 3: But but but that's that's not like if to me,
• 18:45
Speaker 3: playoffs is not it.
• 18:47
Speaker 4: It doesn't have to be included. It shouldn't be inclusive.
• 18:50
Speaker 4: It should be play.
• 18:52
  Speaker 3: You gotta there's a there's a limit that you or
• 18:54
  Speaker 3: there's a there's a mountain that you have to climb
• 18:56
Speaker 3: to get into the playoffs. That matters if you start
• 18:59
Speaker 3: this and the sixteen teams and you know, even if
• 19:02
Speaker 3: you're sixteen, you're going to be playing in the playoffs.
• 19:05
Speaker 4: No, that can't. That can't. That can't be.
• 19:08
Speaker 7: Well, what's gonna happen is they're going to go back
• 19:10
Speaker 7: to their original plan, which was what you said, hollis
• 19:12
Speaker 7: twenty eight teams in quade.
• 19:14
Speaker 5: I think I think it was twenty eight teams.
• 19:17
Speaker 7: And you know what these schools aren't going to be
• 19:18
Speaker 7: happy about it because you know these schools that filed
• 19:21
Speaker 7: in junctions and wanted to move back a class or
• 19:23
Speaker 7: what they're going to have to do with the WVSSAC says,
• 19:26
Speaker 7: because they're king of the land, they can do whatever they.
• 19:28
Speaker 3: Are we going to have enough? Are we going to
• 19:30
Speaker 3: have enough teams? So let's say what they did before?
• 19:33
Speaker 4: Right, they did, but they only had three divisions. But
• 19:37
Speaker 4: they only had three divisions.
• 19:38
Speaker 5: Here's the thing. It's one hundred and fourteen total teams
• 19:42
Speaker 5: in the state of West Virginia that played football. If
• 19:44
Speaker 5: you have four divisions, that's a that's approximately twenty eight
• 19:47
Speaker 5: teams in the four divisions. One division would have probably
• 19:51
Speaker 5: twenty nine or something to that effect. So if they
• 19:53
Speaker 5: just took it, and you just took the enrollment numbers,
• 19:56
Speaker 5: and you said who the top of the enrollment all
• 19:58
Speaker 5: the way to the bottom, and you just start opping
• 20:00
Speaker 5: it off to twenty eight So these top twenty eighteen,
• 20:03
Speaker 5: that's that's quaudi this and it goes right down the line.
• 20:06
Speaker 5: So and the shit, and again you base it on
• 20:09
Speaker 5: enroll in numbers, so it's no room for interpretation. This
• 20:13
Speaker 5: is the enrollment number and that's it.
• 20:15
Speaker 6: But do you think they'll do that? Do you think
• 20:18
  Speaker 6: they're abandoned?
• 20:19
Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, you're right, all right, you can't have twenty,
• 20:22
Speaker 5: you can't have sixteen teams in a division, or or
• 20:26
Speaker 5: you're going to have to just lower the playoff number.
• 20:28
Speaker 5: Instead of sixteen, it would be twelve.
• 20:30
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, see, I don't see.
• 20:33
  Speaker 3: That's where I'm at. I don't think everybody gets into
• 20:36
  Speaker 3: the playoffs.
• 20:37
  Speaker 4: I just don't. I just don't. I just don't see that.
• 20:41
Speaker 7: And they should have had the foresight to do that,
• 20:43
Speaker 7: don't you think Guys before playoffs roll around, when they
• 20:47
Speaker 7: saw there were only sixteen teams, they should have said,
• 20:49
Speaker 7: Okay for Quada, we're going to do ten twelve.
• 20:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, that should have been Again, they got the thority
• 20:56
  Speaker 5: to do.
• 20:56
Speaker 7: That, right, right, Well, they can do whatever they want
• 20:58
Speaker 7: now obviously. Oh yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be
• 21:01
Speaker 7: interesting in the off season.
• 21:03
  Speaker 3: And and I don't know, I don't know if I've
• 21:07
Speaker 3: ever seen a situation to where an organization and this
• 21:12
Speaker 3: is not specifically targeted at s SAC, but I'm not
• 21:16
Speaker 3: sure I've ever seen or heard it's set out loud
• 21:22
Speaker 3: that somebody has total control that's like, you know what
• 21:26
  Speaker 3: I'm saying, Like I don't like.
• 21:27
Speaker 5: As a misnomery. I want to I want to make
• 21:29
Speaker 5: sure we're clear on that. They don't have total control. Well,
• 21:33
Speaker 5: they have control within the within the authority in which
• 21:36
Speaker 5: they were granted. So if they stepped outside it, just
• 21:38
Speaker 5: like what happened at the beginning of the season when
• 21:41
Speaker 5: they made this old weird complex you know, rating system
• 21:46
Speaker 5: to figure out which school's going with confert or excuse me,
• 21:48
Speaker 5: with classification. That was sort of outside of what they
• 21:52
Speaker 5: could do, and they made it and they left too much.
• 21:53
Speaker 5: They were too vague, right, So they have control within
• 21:56
Speaker 5: the prayer view of their authority, you know what I'm saying.
• 21:59
Speaker 5: So I want to make they're clear.
• 22:00
Speaker 3: But do we know though who knows what that where?
• 22:04
Speaker 3: That authority is it?
• 22:07
Speaker 5: But it's legislatively granted. So if you look at and
• 22:10
Speaker 5: again it's it's West Virginia Code eighteen two twenty five.
• 22:14
Speaker 5: If you're looking as codes, you're looking within the w
• 22:16
Speaker 5: visit at WVSSAC rulebook. That will lay out, which I'm
• 22:21
Speaker 5: not that be two labors and that'd be two points,
• 22:23
Speaker 5: so that lays out their authority within those documents.
• 22:28
Speaker 7: I don't know about you, guys, but it kind of
• 22:31
Speaker 7: leaves a bad taste in my mouth knowing that pretty
• 22:34
Speaker 7: much all these injunctions were filed and and and all
• 22:36
Speaker 7: these judges said this and that, and then all of
• 22:39
Speaker 7: a sudden, the Supreme Court steps in and says, hey,
• 22:42
Speaker 7: guess what, they're in charge.
• 22:44
  Speaker 6: You're not.
• 22:44
Speaker 7: You have no authority here, and they're they're allowed to
• 22:47
Speaker 7: do this within reason.
• 22:49
  Speaker 6: I mean, I don't I don't know.
• 22:50
  Speaker 4: I don't like.
• 22:51
Speaker 6: It went on too long. It went on too long.
• 22:53
Speaker 7: And then for all of a sudden they they say, okay,
• 22:56
Speaker 7: well you know what, forget it that they're in charge
• 22:58
Speaker 7: and these injunctions none of them are legitimate. And to me,
• 23:01
Speaker 7: that's a lot of money, time, heartbreak, all the things,
• 23:05
Speaker 7: all all the fields wrapped into one, because it's just
• 23:09
Speaker 7: not a good look.
• 23:09
Speaker 3: Well, couldn't you have if you knew that they had
• 23:12
Speaker 3: that authority exactly the moment that it came to you,
• 23:15
Speaker 3: you could to say, well, look, we don't necessarily have
• 23:18
Speaker 3: this power. This is really the s sac So whatever
• 23:22
Speaker 3: they decide to do, you all got to do.
• 23:24
Speaker 5: Well. I think again, if I'm a sit and judge,
• 23:27
Speaker 5: and if I'm in Kannall County, and I have these
• 23:30
Speaker 5: schools capital, and I have Saint Albans who has a
• 23:34
Speaker 5: legitimate claim or at least I feel like legitimate, or
• 23:37
  Speaker 5: now I feel like it's a legit. They have a
• 23:39
Speaker 5: legitimate king, and I represent Kanall County and or as
• 23:43
Speaker 5: a judicial officer. It's like I'm almost obligated to challenge it. Again,
• 23:48
Speaker 5: I may get shot down. I made my ruler. I'm
• 23:52
Speaker 5: obligated to challenge that on behalf of the citizens and
• 23:55
Speaker 5: constituents of which I represent.
• 23:56
Speaker 4: Okay, I get that again. That's why you're the legal man.
• 24:01
Speaker 5: Because to me, as a political matter, you know what
• 24:03
Speaker 5: I mean? Like that, that would look crazy if I.
• 24:05
  Speaker 7: Didn't h well, I just hated.
• 24:11
Speaker 6: I hate it for the boys that travel to you.
• 24:14
Speaker 6: I think the mast the mast.
• 24:17
Speaker 4: And I'm going to ask you both this question.
• 24:23
Speaker 3: And take a minute to think about it, and and
• 24:27
Speaker 3: then I'm really interested in in what your what your
• 24:30
Speaker 3: response is. And I'll start that by saying, I do
• 24:34
Speaker 3: not see I do not see football growing in our
• 24:41
Speaker 3: say in the valley, maybe we can even reach out
• 24:44
Speaker 3: over the state. I don't see our football structure being
• 24:51
Speaker 3: something that is beneficial to all the kids. I don't
• 24:58
  Speaker 3: I don't feel like I don't feel like they're getting
• 25:02
Speaker 3: what they're supposed to be getting out of this. This
• 25:04
Speaker 3: is not about D one, This is not about you know,
• 25:08
Speaker 3: making it to the pros or none of this. This
• 25:11
Speaker 3: is about just simply the life lessons and the fun
• 25:16
Speaker 3: and the challenges that come with winning and losing.
• 25:20
Speaker 4: To me, I feel like.
• 25:23
Speaker 3: We've lost that here, you know, and and and you
• 25:27
Speaker 3: know I and I just would say that I feel
• 25:31
Speaker 3: like it's it's being taken over by by individual kinds of.
• 25:38
Speaker 6: People who who who have agendas, that.
• 25:42
Speaker 3: Have an agenda, but you know, if they want to
• 25:45
Speaker 3: win a championship as a coach, they want to they
• 25:47
Speaker 3: want to do this, they want to do that, but
• 25:49
Speaker 3: no one is really looking for that kid that's that's
• 25:52
Speaker 3: sitting on the bench.
• 25:53
Speaker 4: Who how do we get him better?
• 25:55
Speaker 3: And I just feel like football has lost its direction
• 26:00
Speaker 3: beyond any other sport out there.
• 26:03
Speaker 4: That's just how I feel. And it's the sport that
• 26:06
  Speaker 4: I love, and.
• 26:08
Speaker 3: I just think it's the worst sport participating with young kids,
• 26:15
Speaker 3: whether it be youth football, whether it be high school football.
• 26:19
Speaker 3: I mean, we have problems from top to bottom in
• 26:22
Speaker 3: football in these areas, and.
• 26:27
Speaker 4: Am I wrong? Am I wrong to feel that way?
• 26:30
Speaker 5: I'll let you go ahead for at least oh boy, thank.
• 26:33
Speaker 6: Thank you, holla so much.
• 26:34
Speaker 7: Well, I think it goes back to just a minute
• 26:37
Speaker 7: ago when I said, agendas, I think we've lost sight
• 26:39
Speaker 7: of the sport of football is about the kids, the players,
• 26:43
Speaker 7: and it seems like now we've kind of lost focus
• 26:47
Speaker 7: of that, like what you're saying with the kid on
• 26:49
Speaker 7: the bench. You know, with the transfer portal, it's messing
• 26:52
Speaker 7: up the playing time for the kid on the bench
• 26:55
Speaker 7: because you know, the marquee players, they go out there,
• 26:58
Speaker 7: they play great, and then they say, oh, you know
• 27:00
Speaker 7: there's greener grass over here.
• 27:02
Speaker 6: I think I'm going to transfer over there.
• 27:04
Speaker 7: And so the kids on the bench are left there
• 27:05
Speaker 7: with a losing season, and it's kind of like it's
• 27:09
Speaker 7: a reflection at high school especially, is a reflection of
• 27:11
Speaker 7: what's happening happening at the collegiate level. You know, you're
• 27:15
Speaker 7: having the teams that already have great programs and great
• 27:18
Speaker 7: players getting more and more of that, and your teams
• 27:22
Speaker 7: that are kind of in the shadows are sinking back
• 27:25
  Speaker 7: deeper and deeper.
• 27:26
Speaker 6: So I'll agree with what you're saying.
• 27:29
Speaker 7: But I think the main thing is we're losing focus
• 27:31
Speaker 7: of what's best for the kids that are on the field,
• 27:35
Speaker 7: and we're paying attention more to political agendas, personal agendas.
• 27:41
Speaker 7: It's just not become focused on the kid, the student
• 27:43
  Speaker 7: athlete as much.
• 27:47
Speaker 5: I would say that to me, and I would agree
• 27:50
Speaker 5: with most of everything you gots said, but I would
• 27:54
Speaker 5: say we lost the development within football, right that you know,
• 28:00
Speaker 5: even back in the day, you know, as far as
• 28:01
Speaker 5: I can remember, like we had two days during August,
• 28:04
Speaker 5: so basically you would be in camp from you know,
• 28:07
Speaker 5: basically middle school or junior high on, right, So you
• 28:10
Speaker 5: have two days, we would have three of days you
• 28:11
Speaker 5: would have meetings, right, So it allowed coaches that opportunity
• 28:15
Speaker 5: to develop you as a player, as a man, and
• 28:18
Speaker 5: so forth. And I think more than anything, that's what
• 28:23
Speaker 5: we've lost, and that's what other sports of game. Right.
• 28:27
Speaker 5: So we look at our soccer system and we've had
• 28:29
Speaker 5: a conversation. We'll talk about that later day. When you
• 28:31
Speaker 5: know soccer's taken over. When you look at you know,
• 28:34
Speaker 5: sports like baseball, different things like that, I think it's
• 28:37
Speaker 5: a room for development. We're taking kids five six, seven,
• 28:42
Speaker 5: years old in football, and we don't have like a
• 28:46
Speaker 5: T ball system right where you just see or we
• 28:49
Speaker 5: don't have like stuff like that where it's just purely
• 28:51
Speaker 5: development or buy ball where we're not worried about the score.
• 28:54
Speaker 5: We're just saying, can you dribble and shoot? Right, So
• 28:56
Speaker 5: we don't have anything like that within the football system, right,
• 29:00
Speaker 5: because it's all about winning. It's not even necessarily even
• 29:04
Speaker 5: about competing, because to your point, Lisa, if I'm transferring
• 29:08
Speaker 5: from school to school, I'm not necessarily even competing within
• 29:11
Speaker 5: the confines of my team. I'm just looking for the
• 29:13
Speaker 5: best situation if it's me. So it's not even about
• 29:16
Speaker 5: competing in competition. It strictly becomes winning. And when you're
• 29:21
Speaker 5: focused on winning, particularly at those tender ages, you're losing
• 29:25
Speaker 5: the development that needs to happen. So that way, when
• 29:29
Speaker 5: you get to high school, when you get to college,
• 29:31
Speaker 5: you already have a solid foundation, because I mean, I've
• 29:35
Speaker 5: coached from Little league and I've coached to college, and
• 29:38
Speaker 5: I can tell you like at every level that I've coached,
• 29:41
Speaker 5: particularly as I got to and I surprisingly, you know,
• 29:44
Speaker 5: high school in college, like we had to teach fundamentals
• 29:46
Speaker 5: all over again. We had to, like really, and it's
• 29:49
Speaker 5: not just like reinforcing those fundamentals.
• 29:51
Speaker 4: It's like we gotta start from ground.
• 29:52
Speaker 5: To fundamentally, starting from the ground up every time because
• 29:56
Speaker 5: again a coach, but and again I feel bad for
• 29:59
Speaker 5: these coaches because they're pressure cooking right, and they have
• 30:02
Speaker 5: to go and they have to win at all levels.
• 30:05
Speaker 5: And I mean the Little league coaches they're facing all
• 30:07
Speaker 5: the way to the NFL coaches. So I think to
• 30:10
Speaker 5: put a pin in it, it's development is what football's lacking.
• 30:15
Speaker 3: All right, Well, ladies, gentlemen, let's take We're going to
• 30:17
Speaker 3: take a quick break and then we'll write.
• 30:18

• 31:55
Speaker 3: prior to this one.
• 31:58
  Speaker 4: WVU and Marshall.
• 32:00
Speaker 3: Now I am I am, I am the guy who
• 32:04
Speaker 3: said I wasn't thinking that either one of them.
• 32:07
Speaker 4: Would probably make the playoffs.
• 32:09
Speaker 3: And I thought both coaches were were really in a bond.
• 32:19
Speaker 4: Now you know, I'm think.
• 32:21
Speaker 6: Well, one of them is particularly in a bond.
• 32:24
  Speaker 4: I think, I think.
• 32:25
Speaker 3: I think Neil Brown, I think is definitely absolutely has
• 32:29
Speaker 3: some issues at this point. And I think, I think,
• 32:35
Speaker 3: I know where you get rid, I know where you're
• 32:37
Speaker 3: trying to go before you get there. I want to like,
• 32:41
Speaker 3: you know, I feel like, you know, what we do
• 32:47
Speaker 3: is fans, Okay, I think what we do as fans,
• 32:50
Speaker 3: we get the we we start the ball rolling with,
• 32:54
Speaker 3: oh we don't like the coach no more, we need
• 32:56
Speaker 3: to get a new coach.
• 32:57
Speaker 4: Blah blah, blah blah.
• 32:59
Speaker 3: And I think when you look at Marshall specifically, and
• 33:03
Speaker 3: again I was on that wagon, Okay, I was on
• 33:05
Speaker 3: that wagon like, ooh, I don't know if he's going
• 33:07
Speaker 3: to be able to make it.
• 33:08
Speaker 4: You know where he you know. But but now they're
• 33:11
Speaker 4: in a bowl right lead the conference.
• 33:15
Speaker 6: I think the east of it. Yes, yes, so.
• 33:19
Speaker 4: Whatever that looked like early, right, it's not that name.
• 33:23
Speaker 7: He's righted the ship, so to speak. I mean, yes,
• 33:26
Speaker 7: he had that total meltdown against Georgia. Southern that they're
• 33:29
Speaker 7: still they're still paying for that a bit a bit,
• 33:33
Speaker 7: but they are going.
• 33:35
Speaker 3: I think when the yes, and I think when the
• 33:37
Speaker 3: fans get excited when they get that information, do do
• 33:42
Speaker 3: you let's say, you were yelling no, we don't want huff,
• 33:45
Speaker 3: we don't we want to get him out? Can you
• 33:47
Speaker 3: honestly now say, Okay, maybe I was a little too
• 33:51
Speaker 3: early in judging him.
• 33:53
Speaker 4: Are you are you willing to do that?
• 33:55
  Speaker 2: Is?
• 33:56
Speaker 4: Is the average fan really willing to do that?
• 33:58
Speaker 3: Or do they just like, oh, grosh our team is
• 34:01
Speaker 3: really good and just and leave it there.
• 34:05
  Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, that's a that's a really good point
• 34:08
Speaker 7: because I think it depends on the type of fan
• 34:11
Speaker 7: you're talking about. And we talked a lot about toxic
• 34:15
Speaker 7: environments as far as football in the state of West
• 34:17
Speaker 7: Virginia from Little League on up, and I think sometimes
• 34:22
Speaker 7: in West Virginia we just get this negative mindset and
• 34:27
Speaker 7: I think, you know, at the beginning of the season,
• 34:28
Speaker 7: it doesn't help whenever you know the preseason rankings, I
• 34:31
Speaker 7: think they were picked to finish like fifth in the conference.
• 34:34
Speaker 6: Well, right out of the gate, you're like, oh, we're
• 34:36
Speaker 6: gonna be bad this year.
• 34:37
Speaker 7: We're gonna be bad, you know, and so you've already
• 34:40
Speaker 7: got that in you're in the back of your mind.
• 34:41
Speaker 7: And then you know you lose a game, well you
• 34:44
Speaker 7: have to go travel to Ohio State, and of course
• 34:47
  Speaker 7: that wasn't a pretty picture.
• 34:48
Speaker 6: They lose their Virginia Tech.
• 34:51
Speaker 3: We should be which should be sensible for some fan
• 34:54
Speaker 3: to to do that, right.
• 34:56
Speaker 7: It should be, it should be, But you're still in
• 34:58
Speaker 7: that mind, especially when you come out of the gate.
• 35:00
Speaker 7: You win your first game and then you lose too
• 35:02
Speaker 7: in a row, one to Virginia Tech, one to Ohio State,
• 35:05
Speaker 7: which you know you're one and two. You've already got
• 35:07
Speaker 7: that information in your head that we're not going to
• 35:09
Speaker 7: finish grade in the in our conference play right, yep.
• 35:13
Speaker 7: And and then you win a few they weren't pretty games,
• 35:15
Speaker 7: but you're winning, and then you then you have that
• 35:18
Speaker 7: debacle at Georgia Southern. That was the one that really
• 35:22
Speaker 7: put the fans over the edge. I think I think
• 35:24
Speaker 7: they could have handled the losses with the Hokies and
• 35:28
Speaker 7: the buck Eyes because those are expected losses. But when
• 35:31
Speaker 7: you lose a game in the last few minutes in
• 35:34
Speaker 7: the manner that the Herd lost that game and it
• 35:37
Speaker 7: was about they questioned coaching right and rightly so and so.
• 35:42
Speaker 7: But now you know, Huff's found a way to turn
• 35:46
Speaker 7: the like I said, to right the ship, and they're winning.
• 35:50
Speaker 7: They're atop their division. Now they may need some help.
• 35:52
Speaker 7: They need some help, They need some losses. I think
• 35:54
Speaker 7: from like James Madison and Georgia Southern coming back to
• 35:58
Speaker 7: haunt them. They could possibly play for the conference title,
• 36:02
Speaker 7: which is pretty amazing considering where we were at the
• 36:05
Speaker 7: beginning of the year.
• 36:06
Speaker 6: But what you're saying is, I don't know.
• 36:10
Speaker 7: Fans have like we've said this before, fans have short memories,
• 36:14
Speaker 7: right right, So I think if they can get to
• 36:15
Speaker 7: that point where they win the division and then they're
• 36:18
Speaker 7: in the conference game, you know, to win the conference,
• 36:23
Speaker 7: you know, I think I think people will change their
• 36:26
Speaker 7: opinion on Huff, But as soon as he loses the game,
• 36:28
Speaker 7: I think they're going to go back to that square
• 36:30
Speaker 7: one as, oh, he's not good. We need we need
• 36:32
Speaker 7: some different, you know, blood down here.
• 36:34
Speaker 6: Well and winning a it's about winning against yes.
• 36:39
Speaker 3: And and and and winning like a playoff game or
• 36:42
  Speaker 3: bowl game.
• 36:44
  Speaker 4: That's not easy.
• 36:46
Speaker 3: I mean, because whoever is in a bowl that you're
• 36:49
Speaker 3: playing they're going to be good.
• 36:53
Speaker 4: It's not. It's not like just anybody to play a
• 36:56
  Speaker 4: bowl game.
• 36:57
Speaker 7: So yeah, it's not quite a football. You have to
• 37:00
Speaker 7: a winning, winning record, I believe absolutely, Yeah.
• 37:03
Speaker 4: At least at least that, you know. And to me,
• 37:07
Speaker 4: I'm going to go back to.
• 37:10
Speaker 3: Listening to him talk about what he was going to
• 37:14
Speaker 3: do and how he was going to sitting on the
• 37:17
Speaker 3: committee of picking the head coach.
• 37:20
Speaker 4: And I've said this a billion times.
• 37:23
Speaker 3: I've been in football my entire life, and talk about
• 37:28
Speaker 3: football was the most amazing conversation that I had heard
• 37:34
Speaker 3: in my life about football.
• 37:36
Speaker 4: He's charismatic, yes, And so I fell in love with
• 37:39
  Speaker 4: him right then.
• 37:40
Speaker 3: Okay, so I was like, there is nobody else in
• 37:42
Speaker 3: this room. Everybody had something to how they were going
• 37:47
Speaker 3: to do it. But what that man was talking about
• 37:49
  Speaker 3: is stuff like I can't even I can't tell you
• 37:53
Speaker 3: what that'll do to a player, right, because like he
• 37:56
Speaker 3: shook me up. I was like, oh, man, can I play?
• 37:58
  Speaker 5: You know?
• 37:59
Speaker 6: And you could just imagine his conversation.
• 38:01
Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely, and and I think he is that guy.
• 38:06
Speaker 4: And and and though I feel like.
• 38:12
Speaker 3: For him at this point where he was where the
• 38:16
Speaker 3: fan base had him and where he is now, if
• 38:21
Speaker 3: I'm the fan that was on the on the negative
• 38:23
Speaker 3: side and thinks he needs to go, I need to
• 38:26
Speaker 3: be like, Okay, really, am I really truly a Marshall fan?
• 38:29
  Speaker 4: Right?
• 38:30
Speaker 3: Am I really really? Because and you say, well, yeah,
• 38:32
Speaker 3: but that's I'm a Marshall fan. But that's the coach now,
• 38:36
Speaker 3: he's the coach who's leading the team.
• 38:40
Speaker 4: So he is Marshall. He is the we are, right okay,
• 38:44
Speaker 4: you know, and I think I think.
• 38:47
Speaker 3: The fans starts screaming what they want to have happened
• 38:52
Speaker 3: to satisfy them, Okay, And that's not fair because when
• 38:58
Speaker 3: you watch those players a week ago and they won
• 39:03
Speaker 3: the game, and you watch those players jump at him
• 39:06
Speaker 3: and high five him, that's not That's a whole different
• 39:11
Speaker 3: coach player relationship, right.
• 39:13
Speaker 4: I'm not running up the Bud Graham high five.
• 39:15
Speaker 6: In him exactly, you know, the whole.
• 39:19
  Speaker 5: That's the whole.
• 39:19
Speaker 4: It's a whole thing, you know.
• 39:21
Speaker 3: And and to have that coach that you can feel
• 39:24
Speaker 3: that kind of bond with, right, that's an amazing thing
• 39:29
Speaker 3: for every single player who can appreciate.
• 39:33
Speaker 6: I agree with all that you said.
• 39:35
Speaker 7: And that's that's one aspect of being a head coach
• 39:37
Speaker 7: at a college. But we all have to remember, we
• 39:39
Speaker 7: all have to go back and remember Doc Holliday. Doc
• 39:42
Speaker 7: Holliday won Coach of the Year in Conference USA, and
• 39:47
Speaker 7: weeks later they let him go. And so we're not
• 39:51
Speaker 7: just looking at interaction between the players and the fans
• 39:56
Speaker 7: and winning. We're looking at I guess in the world
• 39:59
Speaker 7: of NI and the world of media, they want to
• 40:04
Speaker 7: coach that's going to and Huff's given them this. I
• 40:08
Speaker 7: will I will say this. Huff has given them that
• 40:11
Speaker 7: face of Marshall. What is the personality, Yes, and going
• 40:15
Speaker 7: to you know, hometown functions, being a part of the community,
• 40:19
Speaker 7: which was part of what Marshall wanted and part of
• 40:21
Speaker 7: the reason I believe Dark Holliday was let go. So
• 40:25
Speaker 7: but now I think it bounces back and forth between
• 40:30
Speaker 7: fans wanting to win. I mean, I just think fans
• 40:32
Speaker 7: sometimes are just so out of touch with reality. They
• 40:36
Speaker 7: just want something out of a head coach that they
• 40:40
Speaker 7: want it all and and that's a great concept and
• 40:43
Speaker 7: a great thing to strive for, but sometimes you just
• 40:46
Speaker 7: got to pick. Okay, you know which part of this
• 40:50
Speaker 7: are we going to go with? Is it the winning aspect?
• 40:53
Speaker 7: Of it or is it being part of the community.
• 40:56
Speaker 3: And be fair and say to yourself, where did I
• 41:00
Speaker 3: I think Marshall was going to be when.
• 41:02
Speaker 4: The season started, exactly, you know.
• 41:05
Speaker 3: And and even if you said, well, I just don't
• 41:07
Speaker 3: think Huff can Huff can do this. So I don't
• 41:09
Speaker 3: see Marshall. They might win five games, they might win
• 41:12
  Speaker 3: four games.
• 41:13
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 41:13
Speaker 3: I just don't think that they're going to be anything.
• 41:16
Speaker 3: Okay now where we are now okay.
• 41:21
Speaker 6: Could change quickly though, it could change.
• 41:23
Speaker 7: But what he loses all three of the the last
• 41:26
Speaker 7: games of the season, it's a whole different story in Huntington.
• 41:30
Speaker 4: Yes, and and and and now we're optimistic.
• 41:33
Speaker 3: See to me, I'm thinking that you're either to me,
• 41:35
Speaker 3: you either you're in or you're out right like I've
• 41:42
Speaker 3: been out, you know. And and I was out not
• 41:46
Speaker 3: because I wanted to see him go, because I because I,
• 41:49
Speaker 3: like I said, he's got me right.
• 41:52
Speaker 4: I could play for him any day, regardless of the record.
• 41:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, But for I felt like for the for the
• 41:58
Speaker 3: fan base, they just weren't they weren't willing. We've got spoiled,
• 42:04
Speaker 3: you know, with championships and and and Bobby Prue you know,
• 42:07
Speaker 3: we just got spoiled there. And now everybody, every coach
• 42:11
Speaker 3: that comes has to be that has to has to
• 42:15
Speaker 3: get us to that space. Well that that that's not
• 42:18
Speaker 3: an easy task. You also have to build a team
• 42:22
Speaker 3: and keep players. And now with the nil situation, how
• 42:27
Speaker 3: do you do that?
• 42:28
Speaker 6: Right, that's the bottom line.
• 42:31
Speaker 4: I think that's I think that is the key.
• 42:33
Speaker 7: The whole dynamics of college football are completely different than
• 42:36
Speaker 7: they were back in the nineties when PREU was winning championships.
• 42:39
Speaker 3: I'm sorry, and and you talked about it, yes, and
• 42:42
Speaker 3: and the fans don't change.
• 42:44
  Speaker 6: The fans.
• 42:45
Speaker 7: Fans still expect the traditions that they had back in
• 42:49
Speaker 7: the nineties when it's not the same landscape.
• 42:52
Speaker 3: And again, nobody, nobody has ever had, nobody in Marshall's
• 42:59
Speaker 3: hit history has ever had a player like a Randy Moss.
• 43:05
  Speaker 5: No.
• 43:06
  Speaker 4: I mean, let's let's just be honest.
• 43:09
Speaker 3: Randy Moss in I could coach Randy Moss and and
• 43:13
Speaker 3: and and and potentially have a chance at a super Bowl,
• 43:16
Speaker 3: right exactly, you know, I mean, I skip all my
• 43:19
Speaker 3: college just go to the league.
• 43:21
Speaker 6: Make any quarterback look good. Absolutely, I mean, so you.
• 43:24
Speaker 3: You you you can't just ignore that piece of it,
• 43:30
Speaker 3: and and and and be just realistic. And in the
• 43:33
Speaker 3: challenges that Huff has, he does have n IO issues.
• 43:38
Speaker 4: You know, he's got to compete with that now.
• 43:41
  Speaker 3: And if I don't like him, and if I don't
• 43:43
  Speaker 3: think I think he's the.
• 43:45
Speaker 4: Right guy, well I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna.
• 43:47
Speaker 3: I'm not gonna put no money up for that, right,
• 43:48
Speaker 3: I mean, so you so you have the problem. So
• 43:52
Speaker 3: there's that problem as well.
• 43:54
Speaker 7: And you know, I don't want to say this in
• 43:58
Speaker 7: a negative way. I don't know how else to say it.
• 44:00
Speaker 6: Though. People's memories they're so short.
• 44:04
Speaker 7: Yeah, they forget us going out to South Bend, you know,
• 44:07
Speaker 7: just a few years ago and pulling off one of
• 44:08
Speaker 7: the biggest upsets in college football history. Really it was,
• 44:13
Speaker 7: and Marshall is known for that. We sneak up on people,
• 44:16
Speaker 7: we can somehow find a way sometimes to win. But
• 44:19
Speaker 7: when we don't do it, boy, they're just they're so
• 44:22
Speaker 7: quick to throw stones.
• 44:23
Speaker 3: I mean, if you if you go back to your point,
• 44:26
Speaker 3: if you go back and you look at at great wins.
• 44:31
Speaker 4: Great wins, great win Marshall's.
• 44:33
Speaker 3: Great wins, and you put the coaches connected to that
• 44:37
Speaker 3: hump send that ballpark.
• 44:39
Speaker 7: Sure you have, he earned it, you know what, In fact,
• 44:45
Speaker 7: he probably earned it more than the others because he's
• 44:48
  Speaker 7: dealing in a.
• 44:48
Speaker 6: Whole different era valid point of keeping.
• 44:51
Speaker 7: Players and trying to you know, keep a team that
• 44:55
Speaker 7: has a winning record together.
• 44:57
Speaker 3: There's no way Marshall keeps Randy in in the n
• 45:00
  Speaker 3: I L Chad Pennington.
• 45:02
Speaker 6: He's not, he's not staying that team would never it
• 45:04
Speaker 6: would not have it.
• 45:06
Speaker 3: No, No, they'd have been gone all over the place.
• 45:10
  Speaker 4: And that's it.
• 45:10
Speaker 3: And and let and again people forget, it's easy to forget.
• 45:16
Speaker 4: But our roll for my role, our role for.
• 45:20
Speaker 3: Marshall, the support that Marshall is is like, I'm telling
• 45:24
  Speaker 3: you that.
• 45:27
Speaker 4: Coach Huff talked about football.
• 45:32
Speaker 3: In a manner that literally froze me and and made
• 45:36
Speaker 3: me like, oh, I just I just want to sit
• 45:39
Speaker 3: in the room and listen to this guy talk.
• 45:43
Speaker 4: So I give him that for sure.
• 45:45
Speaker 3: So and so I'm trying to tell you this is
• 45:48
Speaker 3: not just your average Joe blow coach.
• 45:51
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 45:52
Speaker 6: And again, we're lucky to have him.
• 45:55
Speaker 4: You got to be lucky to have him.
• 45:57
Speaker 7: But we also know how fickle fans are, and how
• 46:01
Speaker 7: fickle really the administration at Marshall can be because we know,
• 46:05
Speaker 7: look what happened to Doc. They have their minds made
• 46:07
Speaker 7: up and it didn't matter how that season ended.
• 46:11
  Speaker 6: So it's gone.
• 46:11
Speaker 3: So so so if we if we if we jump
• 46:16
  Speaker 3: forward and say.
• 46:20
Speaker 4: They go bowling, they lose the bowl game.
• 46:25
Speaker 7: Now it depends on how the season ends. Don't you
• 46:29
Speaker 7: think I guess, Okay, they're going bowling. Yes, that that's
• 46:33
Speaker 7: that's established. But they still have what two games left?
• 46:37
Speaker 7: Three games even no two games? I think what if
• 46:40
Speaker 7: they lose both of those games and in a in
• 46:43
Speaker 7: a fashion that's not close at all, like a meltdown
• 46:46
Speaker 7: at Georgia Southern, that that type of scenario, then what
• 46:49
Speaker 7: then what's the fan base going to?
• 46:51
  Speaker 5: How?
• 46:52
Speaker 4: How will they work?
• 46:53
Speaker 3: My question, my question before I can answer that is
• 46:58
Speaker 3: how important is it?
• 47:00
  Speaker 7: So?
• 47:00
Speaker 4: What's the What was the goal going into the season?
• 47:04
  Speaker 5: To me?
• 47:05
Speaker 4: Everybody wants the Bowl? Right, right?
• 47:07
Speaker 3: So we we accomplished that regardless of what's happening.
• 47:12
Speaker 4: We got a bowl. We got a shot at a bowl, right.
• 47:16
Speaker 3: So if you're going bowling, I'm not saying I want
• 47:20
Speaker 3: them to lose, but you can't now switch and say, well, yeah,
• 47:23
Speaker 3: but we lost three games, and now we're going bowling.
• 47:26
Speaker 3: I don't you know that that don't matter to me.
• 47:29
Speaker 3: Oh what mattered to me was those last three games. No,
• 47:31
Speaker 3: you what was it? What's the goal in the beginning
• 47:33
Speaker 3: of the season. Let's go bowling, right, we're going bowling.
• 47:37
Speaker 7: Maybe or maybe maybe maybe they aspirations were to win
• 47:41
  Speaker 7: a conference title.
• 47:43
Speaker 4: That may be for the team.
• 47:45
Speaker 6: But you don't think the average fan, No.
• 47:47
  Speaker 4: I don't think.
• 47:47
  Speaker 5: No.
• 47:48
Speaker 3: I think I think today today's fan wants go They
• 47:51
Speaker 3: want to go bowl. They want to they want to
• 47:54
Speaker 3: play in the Bowl game because it just sounds big.
• 47:57
  Speaker 6: Well it does.
• 47:57
Speaker 7: And now that we've got the college championship playoffs the
• 48:02
Speaker 7: way that they're true, it's kind of taken lackluster, you know,
• 48:05
Speaker 7: it's kind of made the Bowl scene not as quite
• 48:08
  Speaker 7: as exciting.
• 48:09
Speaker 6: But we've got to face reality.
• 48:11
Speaker 7: I mean, it's gonna be really really let's just even
• 48:14
Speaker 7: call it what It is impossible for Marshall to get
• 48:17
  Speaker 7: into that playoff.
• 48:18
Speaker 4: Well, yes, yes, I will give you that.
• 48:21
Speaker 6: I mean, it is what it is.
• 48:23
Speaker 4: But again, I'm going to go back and again.
• 48:26
Speaker 3: The video of him on Facebook and with his players
• 48:30
Speaker 3: in the locker room and him yelling and screaming and
• 48:33
  Speaker 3: all that.
• 48:34
Speaker 4: I'm telling you to.
• 48:37
Speaker 3: Find that coach right, To find that coach and those
• 48:42
Speaker 3: players to have that kind of bond is amazing to me.
• 48:49
Speaker 6: He can connect to the young kids and that matters.
• 48:52
  Speaker 6: That matters.
• 48:53
Speaker 3: The funniest and cheerful kind of coach that I that
• 49:00
Speaker 3: I can remember, Pete Carroll was that fun loving kind
• 49:03
Speaker 3: of guy. But he was that was him in the
• 49:05
Speaker 3: beginning of his career when when he coached me in Minnesota,
• 49:09
Speaker 3: and he would want to shoot horse and you know,
• 49:12
Speaker 3: we had a basketball rim in the in the in
• 49:13
Speaker 3: the in the facility and he wanted to play horse
• 49:16
Speaker 3: against everybody and laughing and having fun. And he was
• 49:21
Speaker 3: like one of the guys, right, you know, but you
• 49:23
Speaker 3: respected him as the coach, but he was one of
• 49:25
Speaker 3: those kind of guys. And then to watch him go
• 49:29
Speaker 3: through the system and and and his connection with players
• 49:33
Speaker 3: was amazing. And I'm and and and Huff to me
• 49:39
Speaker 3: has that type of personality and players love that.
• 49:46
Speaker 7: And that is so crucial and critical, especially now that
• 49:49
Speaker 7: we're talking about the NIL on the transfer portal. If
• 49:52
Speaker 7: a kid feels connected, he may yes, they may they.
• 49:56
Speaker 6: May say, oh, you know, what you know, Marshall. I
• 49:59
  Speaker 6: love this guy.
• 50:00
  Speaker 7: This guy's you know, he's he's like a father figure
• 50:02
Speaker 7: to me. He's teaching me, you know, lots of different
• 50:06
Speaker 7: life lessons. I'm winning here, I'm winning, ye playing playing,
• 50:10
Speaker 7: I'm playing. So if you can't have you know, the
• 50:13
Speaker 7: ni O money and the transfer portal advantages, then you
• 50:19
Speaker 7: really do need that guy. You need that guy in
• 50:21
Speaker 7: the locker room to keep the players.
• 50:24
  Speaker 4: Part of that.
• 50:24
Speaker 3: And and two and and and I love that too
• 50:27
Speaker 3: because but I hate to put the butt in there.
• 50:31
  Speaker 3: I'm not sometimes I'm not sure of what a player's
• 50:35
Speaker 3: really looking for in a coach. And then the critical
• 50:38
Speaker 3: piece to that is you should be looking for it.
• 50:41
Speaker 3: You should be looking for something from your coach. What
• 50:45
Speaker 3: whatever that what whatever it.
• 50:47
Speaker 4: Is that you need.
• 50:48
Speaker 3: Now I'm not saying that the coach can match everybody
• 50:51
Speaker 3: on that team, right, but you need to be looking
• 50:55
Speaker 3: for something out of that coach, whether it's what he knows,
• 50:59
Speaker 3: how he pushes you, which which is a confusing kind
• 51:04
Speaker 3: of piece, the pushing piece of it, when I push you,
• 51:08
Speaker 3: you could you could take that personally.
• 51:11
Speaker 6: I think it depends on the player.
• 51:12
Speaker 3: I think I think it depends on the player and
• 51:15
Speaker 3: the players to me his goal coaches who yelled at
• 51:19
Speaker 3: me and custed at me and pushed me to do harder.
• 51:23
Speaker 4: I'm okay. I was okay with that.
• 51:25
Speaker 3: Whether I liked it or not, I'm okay with that
• 51:28
Speaker 3: because all that's gonna do is that's gonna make me better.
• 51:31
Speaker 4: You know, Sonny Randall.
• 51:32
Speaker 3: Was unbelievably hard and made your run forever. But it
• 51:39
Speaker 3: did not bother me because I knew what I was
• 51:41
Speaker 3: trying to get to and this dude played in the league,
• 51:44
Speaker 3: and I'm thinking to myself, like, well, he knows, he
• 51:48
  Speaker 3: knows what.
• 51:48
Speaker 4: It takes, and we don't.
• 51:51
Speaker 3: Sometimes I think what we don't look at that coach's
• 51:55
Speaker 3: ability to help me get to where I want to get.
• 51:59
Speaker 3: What we do is we like, why why we got
• 52:03
Speaker 3: to do all this?
• 52:04
Speaker 4: Right? Right? Don't you think he knows?
• 52:07
Speaker 7: And don't you think too that now that we've got
• 52:10
Speaker 7: the system has changed at the high school level and
• 52:12
Speaker 7: they're able like if they don't like the way a
• 52:14
Speaker 7: coach is treating them, they'll all just go here, you know.
• 52:17
Speaker 7: So we've got that mindset already in place, and then
• 52:21
Speaker 7: they get to the collegiate level and that mindset follows them,
• 52:24
Speaker 7: so they're like, well, you know, I'm not going to
• 52:25
Speaker 7: put up with this. I can go over here, and
• 52:27
Speaker 7: this coach just promised me this and this, and I
• 52:30
Speaker 7: don't have to listen to what you know I'm hearing
• 52:32
  Speaker 7: here this abuse.
• 52:34
Speaker 4: I'll make this case that.
• 52:38
Speaker 3: Most high school athletes who don't like their coach.
• 52:43
Speaker 4: Because he's too hard, he yells, he.
• 52:46
Speaker 3: Screams, he does all this kind of stuff, likely or
• 52:50
Speaker 3: not going to play college football.
• 52:52
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 52:53
Speaker 3: Oh, I agree, because if you think that you don't
• 52:57
Speaker 3: get to go home and tell mom and dad that
• 53:00
Speaker 3: that coach got on me, you don't get to do that.
• 53:04
Speaker 3: You can do it, but trust me, you're going to
• 53:06
Speaker 3: be writing a check for the next school that you
• 53:08
Speaker 3: go to. Yes, because you're not. You're not gonna happen.
• 53:11
Speaker 3: That's not happening here. And I think I think we
• 53:15
Speaker 3: just don't we we just don't realize that. And I
• 53:17
Speaker 3: think part of our issues is we're not teaching when
• 53:23
Speaker 3: I we're not putting a foundation that is going to
• 53:25
Speaker 3: be strong enough to play college ball.
• 53:28
Speaker 6: That's exactly what Hollis said, right, Yes, that was his point.
• 53:30
Speaker 4: Yes, And I think we have talented kids.
• 53:35
Speaker 3: I think, but we spoil them and and we make
• 53:38
Speaker 3: them think that they're special, and the moment they walk
• 53:41
Speaker 3: and again I was. I was a victim of thinking
• 53:43
  Speaker 3: I was special too. I get a I get a
• 53:46
Speaker 3: scholarship at Marshall, and I'm the last dude to show
• 53:49
Speaker 3: up at the first day of practice or the first
• 53:52
Speaker 3: day the first meeting.
• 53:54
Speaker 4: I'm I'm home washing my car. I'm washing my car.
• 53:58
Speaker 3: I'm washing my car, and I'm thinking like, okay, I'm
• 54:01
Speaker 3: gonna pull up like I'm like I'm a big will.
• 54:03
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, never again, never again again.
• 54:08
Speaker 4: It took it took me one time to learn that lesson. No,
• 54:11
Speaker 4: you you're not special.
• 54:13
Speaker 3: You are part of something, and I'm gonna make sure
• 54:15
Speaker 3: you understand the part of this that you'll never separate
• 54:19
Speaker 3: yourself from that. I never had that situation, never thought
• 54:23
Speaker 3: that way ever again in my life. Right and because
• 54:26
Speaker 3: I could see it, I understood it like I knew
• 54:29
Speaker 3: I had messed up when I was walking in because
• 54:32
Speaker 3: I had high school coaches that all eyes on me.
• 54:36
  Speaker 3: And it wasn't like I didn't go I didn't get
• 54:38
  Speaker 3: that my entire time. I don't know why. I don't
• 54:42
Speaker 3: know why I thought I was going to be so
• 54:44
Speaker 3: special that I could be late, you know.
• 54:48
Speaker 7: But they taught you what but but here's the here's
• 54:50
Speaker 7: the part that's important.
• 54:51
Speaker 6: They taught you that lesson early on.
• 54:54
Speaker 4: Yes, quickly I knew it. But for whatever reason I
• 54:57
Speaker 4: took it. I felt like I was special, you.
• 54:59
Speaker 7: Know, because and maybe in high school you got a
• 55:01
  Speaker 7: little more leeway.
• 55:03
Speaker 4: No, not really, no, not at all, not at all.
• 55:06
Speaker 3: Right, So actually I think again, I think it went
• 55:10
Speaker 3: to my head, like you know, now, again, Marshall wasn't great,
• 55:13
Speaker 3: but but I got a scholarship to play football, and
• 55:17
Speaker 3: so and I was.
• 55:19
Speaker 4: I was supposedly the.
• 55:20
Speaker 6: First you were young.
• 55:21
  Speaker 4: I was young.
• 55:22
Speaker 3: I was the first recruit. So I'm thinking, Okay, they'll wait.
• 55:26
Speaker 6: I'd have loved to be a file on the wall
• 55:30
  Speaker 6: that go down.
• 55:30
Speaker 3: They'll wait for the wait for the needing, that wait
• 55:32
Speaker 3: for me to get there. I'm just And and it
• 55:35
Speaker 3: was horrible, like I mean, it was. I paid for
• 55:38
Speaker 3: that and it and it never again would that ever happened?
• 55:44
Speaker 7: Good and that and and and that's that's part of
• 55:47
Speaker 7: what's missing right now.
• 55:48
Speaker 3: I think absolutely and and and we gotta go. But
• 55:51
Speaker 3: I want to I want to say this, Lisa, and
• 55:54
Speaker 3: and and here and kind of get your feedback on this.
• 55:58
Speaker 4: I believe that most kids today.
• 56:04
Speaker 3: Do not have the ultimate respect for the coach and
• 56:10
Speaker 3: what he says, because you hear them mumbling different stuff,
• 56:15
Speaker 3: coach says something, and then you say something. Coach says something,
• 56:17
Speaker 3: and you say something that was never something that could
• 56:21
Speaker 3: happen back in the day. And I think that if
• 56:25
  Speaker 3: I don't think there's a way to go back, but
• 56:27
Speaker 3: I think parents need to teach that that coach is
• 56:33
Speaker 3: the ultimate decision making process for your future success in
• 56:39
  Speaker 3: a sport.
• 56:40
Speaker 6: And I agree with you.
• 56:42
Speaker 7: I do think it starts at home with the family,
• 56:44
Speaker 7: you know, the family aspect of it. But we also
• 56:47
Speaker 7: have to do something about this. And you can't see
• 56:50
Speaker 7: me on the radio, guys that I'm holding my phone.
• 56:52
Speaker 7: You know, it's all the other factors that are in
• 56:56
Speaker 7: their ear, so to speak.
• 56:58
Speaker 6: Social media, you know, TV, just so many things.
• 57:04
Speaker 7: That there there's so many influences now that we didn't
• 57:07
Speaker 7: even didn't e didn't even imagine, right, right, you know,
• 57:10
Speaker 7: it was basically our community and our family and now
• 57:12
Speaker 7: that these poor kids they've got so many things in
• 57:14
  Speaker 7: their head.
• 57:15
  Speaker 6: It's great and.
• 57:15
  Speaker 4: That's a challenge. That's a challenge. Challenge.
• 57:17
Speaker 3: All right, Well, I want to make sure we think.
