- Lucas: Hey there, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I've got Luna with me. Luna: Hi everyone! I'm Luna, and I'm super ready to learn some more Malay today. What are we diving into? Lucas: So, we've been learning all these useful verbs and numbers, but there's one thing we haven't really touched yet that's super important for any conversation. Luna: What's that? Telling time? Ordering more food? Lucas: Almost. Today we're learning how to ask questions. Specifically, the words 'apa' and 'siapa'. Luna: Oh, I think I've heard those. 'Apa' means what, and 'siapa' means who, right? Lucas: Exactly. And we're going to put them to use in some simple questions. Let's start with the most classic one: 'Ini apa?' Luna: Ini apa? That's 'What is this?' Lucas: Right. So if you point at something and ask 'Ini apa?', you're asking 'What is this?' Let's try it slowly. Ini... apa? Luna: Ini apa? Ini apa? Lucas: Perfect. And if you want to ask about something further away, you say 'Itu apa?' Luna: Itu apa? What is that? Itu... apa? Lucas: Yes. So 'ini' is this, and 'itu' is that. Let's do a little practice. Imagine you see something on the table. You point at it and ask... Luna: Ini apa? Lucas: And if you're looking across the street at a building, you ask... Luna: Itu apa? Lucas: Great. Now let's switch to 'siapa'. If you want to ask who someone is, you can say 'Dia siapa?' Luna: Dia siapa? That's 'Who is he/she?' Lucas: Exactly. 'Dia' means he or she. So 'Dia siapa?' is a simple way to ask who someone is. Let's practice that one. Dia... siapa? Luna: Dia siapa? Dia siapa? Lucas: And if you want to ask about a specific person, you could point and say 'Siapa itu?' Luna: Siapa itu? That's 'Who is that?' Lucas: Right. So 'Siapa itu?' is perfect when you're asking about someone across the room or in a photo. Let's try that one. Siapa... itu? Luna: Siapa itu? Siapa itu? Hmm, so we have 'Ini apa?', 'Itu apa?', 'Dia siapa?', and 'Siapa itu?' Lucas: You got it. Now let me show you a quick little scene. Imagine you're at a friend's house and you see something strange on the table. You ask... Luna: Ini apa? Lucas: And your friend says 'Itu durian.' Remember durian from earlier? Luna: Oh, the smelly fruit. I'd ask 'Itu apa?' if it was across the room. Lucas: Exactly. And if someone new walks in, you can whisper to your friend, 'Siapa itu?' Luna: Siapa itu? And my friend might say 'Dia guru.' Lucas: Perfect. So you've got the question words now. Let's do a quick review. What do we say when we want to ask 'What is this?' Luna: Ini apa? Lucas: And 'What is that?' Luna: Itu apa? Lucas: And 'Who is he/she?' Luna: Dia siapa? Lucas: And 'Who is that?' Luna: Siapa itu? Lucas: Awesome. You've got them all. Now, before we wrap up, I want to mention something real quick. You know, this podcast is completely free and ad-free, and that's because of a few listeners who support us monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's like a virtual tip jar. If Fexingo has been helping you pick up Malay, and you want to keep it going, that's a simple way to help. Lucas: No pressure, but it's honestly what keeps us making these episodes. Anyway, let's get back to our question words. One more time: 'Ini apa?' Luna: Ini apa? Lucas: Now you try asking me a question. Point at something imaginary and ask me 'What is this?' Luna: Ini apa? Lucas: Itu pen. And if I point at you and ask who you are, you'd answer... Luna: Saya Luna. Lucas: Perfect. So now you can ask what things are and who people are. That's a huge step in conversation. Luna: I feel so much more confident. I can finally ask about all the mysterious things in the kitchen. Lucas: And all the mysterious people at parties. Just remember: 'Ini apa?' for what is this, 'Itu apa?' for what is that, 'Dia siapa?' for who is he or she, and 'Siapa itu?' for who is that. Luna: I'll practice these all week. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: Thank you for joining us on Learn Malay with Fexingo. Practice these questions and we'll see you next time. Selamat tinggal! Luna: Selamat tinggal!
