- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to KFI AM640, the Bill Handel Show on
- 0:04Speaker 1: demand on the iHeartRadio app. A lot going on, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: I want to spend a moment or two talking about politics.
- 0:12Speaker 1: First of all, I love talking about politics and the
- 0:14Speaker 1: way we are going in this country. Obviously, politics has
- 0:18Speaker 1: everything to do with it. So we've got less than
- 0:21Speaker 1: three weeks to go, and Republicans are playing defense because
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Republicans across the country are more and more in trouble,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars in
- 0:33Speaker 1: the final stretch. to try to prevent a Democratic takeover,
- 0:36Speaker 1: which seems almost certain in the House at this point.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So you have GOP groups, a bunch of them, trying
- 0:44Speaker 1: to push their candidates over the finish line. President Trump
- 0:48Speaker 1: and Vice President Vance crisscrossing the country to shore up
- 0:51Speaker 1: Republican support. And these are areas that were, well, described
- 0:55Speaker 1: as unassailable for the Republicans just a few months ago.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Now, you see these rallies everywhere.
- 1:01Speaker 1: That are going on, the president doing two, three a
- 1:03Speaker 1: day and flying all over the country, going to Alaska,
- 1:07Speaker 1: for example, and he's in South Carolina next week. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: he goes to these rallies and he's talking, he's preaching
- 1:14Speaker 1: to the choir. I mean, do you think any Democrats
- 1:17Speaker 1: show up at these rallies? Do you think he is
- 1:19Speaker 1: going to convince any Democrat to vote for Republicans? No.
- 1:25Speaker 1: The only shot that the Republicans have, and this is
- 1:28Speaker 1: where they want to and should use President Trump as
- 1:31Speaker 1: their rallying cry, is to get that base, President Trump,
- 1:36Speaker 1: a Republican base, engaged. Get out there and vote. Make
- 1:41Speaker 1: sure you vote. Make sure your family votes, your friends,
- 1:45Speaker 1: everybody you know votes, because that's the only way it's
- 1:47Speaker 1: going to happen. Because what happens traditionally, as we've been
- 1:50Speaker 1: told over and over again, is that the The party
- 1:53Speaker 1: not in power generally gets creamed in the general in
- 1:56Speaker 1: the midterms. That's sort of a given, assuming everything is equal.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Everything is not equal, though. It's even worse for the Republicans.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The president's approval rating is in the toilet to the
- 2:08Speaker 1: point where a couple of years ago, any Republican that
- 2:11Speaker 1: did not ally himself or herself with the president was
- 2:15Speaker 1: in trouble. And there have been some pretty bonehead moves
- 2:18Speaker 1: that are being made. For example, and this is definitely
- 2:23Speaker 1: the president's fault, Ken Paxton in Tallarico in Texas. John Cornyn,
- 2:29Speaker 1: who was the previous senator, who was a Republican, wasn't
- 2:33Speaker 1: loyal enough to President Trump. So during the primaries, you
- 2:37Speaker 1: have Ken Paxton, the former attorney general of Texas, goes
- 2:41Speaker 1: against Cornyn, who was a shoo-in for re-election. Goes against Cornyn.
- 2:48Speaker 1: The president endorses Paxton. Paxton wins the primary. And now
- 2:52Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent to try
- 2:56Speaker 1: to get Paxton elected. That wouldn't have to have been spent.
- 3:00Speaker 1: because Cornyn would have been elected. That's just one of
- 3:02Speaker 1: the things that are going on. So the Republicans have
- 3:07Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars more, and they're pouring into it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And now the issue, and this generally is the issue,
- 3:12Speaker 1: where do the independents go? I have a hard time
- 3:15Speaker 1: seeing the independents are going to go to the Republicans.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The president can say all he wants. Prices are down.
- 3:22Speaker 1: inflation is under control. It's not our fault. It's Biden's fault. Well,
- 3:27Speaker 1: you know, at some point.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You've heard it over and over and over again.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And I saw a news item the other day about
- 3:34Speaker 1: farmers in Idaho. who had backed up Trump by massive
- 3:38Speaker 1: numbers during the general election and asked by a reporter,
- 3:42Speaker 1: what's going on with you? And the farmer said, I'm
- 3:44Speaker 1: going broke. I'm going broke with the cost of diesel fuel.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And he points to all of his tractors and he
- 3:49Speaker 1: points to all of his farm equipment. He says, every
- 3:50Speaker 1: one of those runs on diesel fuel, every one. And
- 3:52Speaker 1: I can't afford diesel anymore. And even though the president
- 3:57Speaker 1: says it's Zelensky's fault, you blame Zelensky for diesel prices
- 4:01Speaker 1: going up. Other than complete MAGA supporters who live and
- 4:06Speaker 1: die by the president and that transfers into Republican votes
- 4:10Speaker 1: for congresspeople and senators. Other than those folks, maybe they
- 4:15Speaker 1: do believe prices are down.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You know, I go to put gas in my car
- 4:21Speaker 1: and I'm spending, what, $ 6. 50, $ 6.
- 4:22Speaker 2: 60 a gallon. And last year, it was a dollar
- 4:28Speaker 2: and a half less.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And you can tell me all day long prices are down,
- 4:32Speaker 1: that they did not go up a dollar and a half.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Nope.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Don't trust your lying eyes. Well, we'll see what happens
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the midterm. The House is sort of a given.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I think the Republicans have already given up on the House.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Then the issue becomes the Senate, and we'll see which
- 4:47Speaker 1: way it goes. And as I said, the only way
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Republicans are going to win on this one, the
- 4:51Speaker 1: only way is at the Republican base level. It has
- 4:56Speaker 1: to come out in such huge numbers that it overrides
- 5:00Speaker 1: moderates and certainly, of course, Democrats. There isn't a Democrat
- 5:04Speaker 1: in the world that's going to vote for Trump. So
- 5:06Speaker 1: that's what you're going to see. And you're going to
- 5:08Speaker 1: see get out the vote and you'll see Trump. You'll
- 5:10Speaker 1: see Vance. You'll see other surrogates. on the Republican side going.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Get out to vote. You go vote. You go vote.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You have to vote because that's the only chance they have.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And I even think with that, it's not going to happen.
- 5:21Speaker 2: All right. There is, oh, what a shocker.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Another fight between California and the feds and the Justice Department.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And now legal action against California. And this is alleging
- 5:34Speaker 1: non-citizen voters. And this is fascinating as it always is.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We'll be back with that.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You're listening to Bill Handel, On Demand from KFI AM640.
- 5:45Speaker 2: A whole lot going on. It's a busy Thursday.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Actually, it's always a busy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,
- 5:50Speaker 1: not counting the weekends. Welcome to our new cycle, which
- 5:54Speaker 1: is basically not a new cycle anymore. All right.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Oh, a couple of stories we're looking at.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We did that Six Flags story yesterday with that poor gentleman,
- 6:03Speaker 1: that 42-year-old teacher being thrown off the Goliath roller coaster
- 6:07Speaker 1: in Georgia yesterday.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And was killed doing that.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Well, accusations are now flying around about six flags accused
- 6:16Speaker 1: of failing to maintain the parks. Hundreds of reports of
- 6:18Speaker 1: injuries and dangerous malfunctions on these thrill rides. In the
- 6:22Speaker 1: last five years, according to this report, safety records covering
- 6:26Speaker 1: more than a dozen parks across three different states reveal
- 6:30Speaker 1: maintenance issues, train derailments, faulty restraint bars, guest injuries, including
- 6:36Speaker 1: dislocated joints and concussions.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And that's just coming up, huh?
- 6:40Speaker 1: All right, the ongoing lawsuits and fights between the federal
- 6:44Speaker 1: government and California just continue.
- 6:47Speaker 2: They don't stop.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Gavin Newsom, not only individually, but also the entire state
- 6:53Speaker 1: of California and the Trump administration are always at odds.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And here is the latest, and this has to do
- 6:58Speaker 2: with the election.
- 7:00Speaker 1: The Justice Department is threatening legal action against California unless
- 7:05Speaker 1: state and local officials review a list of of potential
- 7:09Speaker 1: non-citizen individuals on the voter rolls. The acting Deputy Attorney
- 7:14Speaker 1: General of the US sent letters to the California Secretary
- 7:17Speaker 1: of State and the LA County Register recorder with a
- 7:20Speaker 1: list of names of possible non-citizens identified by the feds
- 7:25Speaker 1: and the letters demand to California and LA County, you
- 7:29Speaker 1: review this list by noon today. And McCarter wrote, This
- 7:35Speaker 1: is the acting deputy attorney general. The DOJ has provided
- 7:40Speaker 1: a password protected thumb drive. Here's a thumb drive with
- 7:44Speaker 1: a list of individuals that the feds believe are likely
- 7:46Speaker 1: non-citizens who were sent a vote by mail ballot for
- 7:50Speaker 1: the 2026 election. And this is where it gets interesting.
- 7:55Speaker 1: He asked that the county election officials segregate those individuals out,
- 8:00Speaker 1: not cancel them. Not cancel their ability to vote, just
- 8:03Speaker 1: segregate those names.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Now what?
- 8:07Speaker 1: And they're saying until their citizen status was determined.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Well, this is three weeks out.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And there's a federal law that says within 90 days,
- 8:16Speaker 1: you can't do anything about an election in terms of
- 8:18Speaker 1: lists or disqualification.
- 8:20Speaker 2: You just can't.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But, you know, federal law and administration, usually they're not
- 8:26Speaker 1: necessarily connected. So this should not be controversial, according to
- 8:31Speaker 1: the Justice Department. The criminal statute is clear. Only American
- 8:35Speaker 1: citizens may vote in federal elections.
- 8:37Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It is a federal crime, the DOJ said, for non-citizens
- 8:42Speaker 1: to vote in U.S.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Elections.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And the DOJ is asking California to ensure that that
- 8:47Speaker 1: is not occurring. Here's the problem, is that per the Constitution,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the states determine the validity of voters and how the
- 8:57Speaker 1: votes are counted. And how the ballots are sent out
- 9:01Speaker 1: and in what way people vote, in what manner they vote.
- 9:05Speaker 1: For example, balloting, mail-in balloting can be said no, the
- 9:09Speaker 1: time it happens, when it's counted, all of that controlled
- 9:13Speaker 1: by the states. And the Department of Justice, the Trump
- 9:16Speaker 1: administration said, nope, nope, nope. You have to effectively do
- 9:19Speaker 1: what we want you to do. And the states are going,
- 9:22Speaker 1: go pound sand. John Leavitt, who is a former Justice
- 9:26Speaker 1: Department official during the Obama administration, said the feds have
- 9:30Speaker 1: no authority for these demands.
- 9:32Speaker 3: None.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Now, they can send the letter. I mean, that's no problem.
- 9:34Speaker 2: They can send it all they want.
- 9:36Speaker 1: But California does not have to do a damn thing
- 9:40Speaker 1: about it. So DOJ spokesperson came back and said, yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's true. But we're not asking you to stop the votes.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Just sequester the ballots, not change the voter list. Now,
- 9:52Speaker 1: in a statement, California, the official said, nope, we haven't
- 9:57Speaker 1: even accessed the thumb drive. Because doing so would conflict
- 10:01Speaker 1: with our established data privacy information security protocols.
- 10:05Speaker 2: We don't even consider this device a thumb drive, a
- 10:08Speaker 2: secure medium.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And maintaining accurate voter registration records is a fundamental responsibility
- 10:13Speaker 1: of our office, the state. And so on this one,
- 10:18Speaker 1: I don't know what the feds can do. Is this
- 10:20Speaker 1: a possibility that they're going to make a move? Are
- 10:23Speaker 1: the Department of Justice going to make a move to
- 10:25Speaker 1: invalidate votes? Well, the administration certainly did that during the
- 10:31Speaker 1: 2020 election, tried to invalidate as many votes as possible
- 10:34Speaker 1: because the election was rigged. And so here is my prognostication.
- 10:39Speaker 1: In virtually every swing district in which it's too close
- 10:43Speaker 1: to call, and there are Senate races like that, Texas,
- 10:46Speaker 1: for example, a lot of House races like where it's
- 10:51Speaker 1: too close to call. If a Democrat wins, it is rigged.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I guarantee you there'll be lawsuits filed that it was
- 10:58Speaker 1: a fraudulent election.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It's a given.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Although I haven't heard much about that. You know, at
- 11:03Speaker 1: this point, I haven't heard this because before Biden won
- 11:07Speaker 1: the election in 2020, all we heard rigged, rigged, rigged.
- 11:12Speaker 1: If I lose, the election is rigged.
- 11:14Speaker 2: You know what? I'm not hearing a whole lot of
- 11:16Speaker 2: that this time around. Maybe, maybe I'm wrong. I sure
- 11:19Speaker 2: hope so.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Maybe a Republican or two will say, yeah, we lost.
- 11:25Speaker 1: It was a free election, and we lost. Although I
- 11:28Speaker 1: don't know about that. Okay, coming up, a real fun topic.
- 11:32Speaker 1: When is an attorney not an attorney? When is a
- 11:36Speaker 1: law school graduate not an attorney? And when does a
- 11:41Speaker 1: moron become the press secretary? That's coming up next.
- 11:46Speaker 3: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Some stories we're looking at.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Amy, who is devastated by this, reporting that Jackie, the
- 11:59Speaker 1: beloved California bald eagle, that is the star of the
- 12:04Speaker 1: Eagle Cam, worldwide star, I might add, she has died.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Of the flu. Goes to show you how dangerous the
- 12:12Speaker 1: flu is. And I'll tell you one of those. She
- 12:14Speaker 1: refused to be vaccinated, would not get the flu vaccine.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And it just came to bite her in the ass.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Do we know if she got vaccinated against COVID?
- 12:23Speaker 2: I don't because she can't ask her because she's dead.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I don't know. Okay.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Another, that COVID vaccine took another maybe.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Okay. Some stories have a lot of importance and we
- 12:35Speaker 1: really have to pay attention to them. in terms of
- 12:38Speaker 1: what's happening at the White House and what's happening internationally.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And some stories are just fun. This one is just fun.
- 12:45Speaker 1: This has to do with the new White House press secretary,
- 12:47Speaker 1: Katie Zachariah, who showed up yesterday for her first press
- 12:51Speaker 1: conference a few minutes late because she was at a
- 12:53Speaker 1: Mensa meeting.
- 12:54Speaker 2: No, no, she wasn't. I have that wrong.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And she has called herself a lawyer, except she's not
- 13:01Speaker 1: because she hasn't passed the bar exam, any bar exam yet.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And you cannot call yourself a lawyer or an attorney
- 13:09Speaker 1: if you're not licensed. She ain't licensed. Now, she did
- 13:13Speaker 1: sit for the California Bar after graduating from Pepperdine Law School,
- 13:17Speaker 1: good law school, in 2011, but she didn't pass. And
- 13:20Speaker 1: a White House official came back and said that she
- 13:22Speaker 1: was not hired by the president to work on legal matters,
- 13:25Speaker 1: which is true. She was hired to be a press
- 13:28Speaker 1: secretary there. To the dismay of the White House. I
- 13:31Speaker 1: don't know how long she's going to last. As much
- 13:33Speaker 1: as you dislike Caroline Leavitt, you can't argue that Leavitt
- 13:37Speaker 1: was and is not whip smart, is a great communicator.
- 13:43Speaker 1: and does not take gruff from anybody. If you saw
- 13:46Speaker 1: Zachariah yesterday reading word for word from a printed script,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and she couldn't even do that well. So she was
- 13:57Speaker 1: there after a press conference, and the president was about
- 14:00Speaker 1: to leave for a political flight. I think it was
- 14:04Speaker 1: to Alaska. And she was there on the tarmac as
- 14:06Speaker 1: Trump was giving his as usual speech.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Question, answer, period. Two reporters.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And that's one thing about the president. He is the
- 14:14Speaker 1: most accessible president we've ever had by a long shot.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And so they kept on asking, is Levitt an attorney?
- 14:22Speaker 1: I mean, is Zachariah an attorney? And he said he
- 14:27Speaker 1: turned to her. It was a question of the bar goes.
- 14:30Speaker 1: When did you pass the bar? And she turns and says,
- 14:33Speaker 1: when I went to China. No, no, she didn't pass
- 14:37Speaker 1: the bar when she went to China. She failed the
- 14:39Speaker 1: bar and she did go to work in China with
- 14:44Speaker 1: her husband. And she moved that summer to work as
- 14:48Speaker 1: an associate on the international practice team at the law
- 14:52Speaker 1: firm of Mu Gai Gang and Pan in China.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And it's a very prominent law firm, well-known.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And what she said, she was advised by lawyers there,
- 15:06Speaker 1: she could provide legal analysis based on her law degree.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And international transaction experience. Fair enough. All she has to
- 15:13Speaker 2: say is, I'm not a lawyer. It's that simple.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And of course, the White House came back with a statement.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team.
- 15:23Speaker 1: She's uniquely qualified and whip smart. I don't know where
- 15:26Speaker 1: they got that information to help inform the American people
- 15:29Speaker 1: about all the great things President Trump and his administration
- 15:31Speaker 1: has been doing.
- 15:33Speaker 2: She will do an incredible job as press secretary.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I think they said the same thing about Kimberly Guilfoyle
- 15:40Speaker 1: when she was ambassador, was ambassador to Greece. And the
- 15:44Speaker 1: White House, the White House at that point, spokesperson said
- 15:48Speaker 1: she has been a wonderful addition to our team, even
- 15:53Speaker 1: sitting in Greek restaurants and throwing plates against the wall.
- 15:57Speaker 1: She has represented the United States brilliantly.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Well, maybe not. Right.
- 16:01Speaker 1: And she was one of four international associates at the
- 16:04Speaker 1: Chinese law firm involved in drafting multimillion dollar agreements for
- 16:08Speaker 1: cross-border transactions. focusing on client communication for American and multinational
- 16:14Speaker 1: corporations that were doing business in China, which is fine.
- 16:17Speaker 2: You don't need any kind of a degree to do that.
- 16:19Speaker 1: China simply wants someone who knows and can do.
- 16:23Speaker 2: The job, which is fine.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Just don't say you're an attorney, especially if you are
- 16:30Speaker 1: in government, especially if you're under the microscope, especially if
- 16:37Speaker 1: you are being looked at by this media And you're
- 16:41Speaker 1: part of the Trump administration because the media just doesn't
- 16:44Speaker 1: take Donald Trump saying you're a bunch of losers.
- 16:47Speaker 2: You're liars. It's fake news.
- 16:48Speaker 1: They come back and they will report everything that is
- 16:53Speaker 1: even suspect, except for Fox News, of course, and any
- 16:57Speaker 1: little piccadillo that will be reported.
- 16:59Speaker 2: So she's off to a horrible start.
- 17:02Speaker 1: The only thing she has going for her more so
- 17:05Speaker 1: than Caroline Leavitt is she has longer blonde hair. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: that gives her a leg up. Other than that, uh-uh.
- 17:14Speaker 1: So I'm going to tell you right now, I don't
- 17:15Speaker 1: think it's going to happen much longer. A few things
- 17:17Speaker 1: when you can look at and say, okay, that's not
- 17:19Speaker 1: going to happen. One of them, for example, J.D. Vance
- 17:24Speaker 1: last week saying that Nidal Hassan was going to be
- 17:27Speaker 1: executed via live stream.
- 17:28Speaker 2: They were going to cover the execution. No, they weren't.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I said that. No, they weren't.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And you said that. That's not going to happen. $ 5, 000
- 17:35Speaker 1: to every American if Republicans stay in power. That's not
- 17:38Speaker 1: going to happen.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Who are we kidding? Gas prices are going down. Who
- 17:43Speaker 2: are we kidding?
- 17:44Speaker 1: Stop it. So this is one of those where they
- 17:47Speaker 1: picked the wrong person. And of course, why did they
- 17:50Speaker 1: pick her? Because she's a loyalist. And my question is,
- 17:54Speaker 1: aren't there enough Trump loyalists out there that actually.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Are competent and know what they're doing? I guess not.
- 18:02Speaker 2: All right, coming up. This happened to me yesterday. All right.
- 18:06Speaker 1: You're at the check stand and you're asked for a
- 18:09Speaker 1: donation right there.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And you come on, guy. Leave me alone.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Well, there's some stats involved in that research has just
- 18:16Speaker 1: come out. And I want to share with you what
- 18:17Speaker 1: happens with you and with the charity.
- 18:19Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
- 18:21Speaker 1: KFI AM 640.
- 18:24Speaker 3: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Some of the stories we are covering right now, the U.S.
- 18:36Speaker 1: military has drawn up options for renewed strikes on Iran.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And so this war is expanding. The Strait of Hormuz,
- 18:44Speaker 1: more ships are being attacked. It's not doing well. It's
- 18:48Speaker 1: going south pretty quickly. Or the war is simply expanding,
- 18:51Speaker 1: which it is. Okay, let me tell you what happened yesterday.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I was having lunch at a Wahoo's taco stand, by
- 18:59Speaker 1: the way. Wahoo's fish taco. Yeah, I love their tacos.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And I was having lunch with my nephew. And so
- 19:05Speaker 1: I go up there and I order the food, which
- 19:08Speaker 1: is very good. And so I put my card in
- 19:11Speaker 1: and out comes the receipt for me to sign. And
- 19:13Speaker 1: of course, it asks for a tip. Would you on
- 19:15Speaker 1: the card? Would you like to tip starting at 10 percent?
- 19:19Speaker 1: I'm glad it didn't start at 20 percent, 10 percent, 15, 20,
- 19:22Speaker 1: 25 percent. And this is tipping someone who has reached
- 19:25Speaker 1: back to grab the foods being made by the kitchen,
- 19:28Speaker 1: not even walked two feet and then put it on
- 19:30Speaker 1: the counter.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And would you like to tip me?
- 19:33Speaker 1: Okay, that one pisses me off like crazy, and that
- 19:36Speaker 1: is a topic which we have covered and will cover.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Now, how about the stores that ask for a donation?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Will you donate?
- 19:46Speaker 1: And the clerk actually asks you outright, will you donate?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Would you like to donate to? And now some studies
- 19:54Speaker 1: have just been done and no, no, obviously no surprise here.
- 19:59Speaker 1: People don't like it. People don't like it. But here's
- 20:02Speaker 1: what the studies have shown. that people don't like it
- 20:05Speaker 1: to the extent that they don't want to come back
- 20:07Speaker 1: to that store. They are less likely to come back
- 20:09Speaker 1: to the store because being hit up for a donation. Now,
- 20:14Speaker 1: there are a few donations that I have absolutely no
- 20:16Speaker 1: problem dealing with. That little change bucket or on, I think,
- 20:22Speaker 1: who does this? I think Home Depot did it or
- 20:24Speaker 1: Lowe's did it and I bought something. And on the
- 20:27Speaker 1: computer screen, when you do self-checking, it says, will you
- 20:33Speaker 1: allow us to round up to the nearest dollar and
- 20:36Speaker 1: the difference will go to our foundation or our charity?
- 20:40Speaker 2: I feel great about that. Because it's just between you.
- 20:43Speaker 4: What was the donation for? Was it to the location
- 20:47Speaker 4: or was it for a cause? Were you talking about
- 20:49Speaker 4: my situation yesterday?
- 20:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 2: It was a straight tip. It was just a tip.
- 20:53Speaker 2: And they called it a donation?
- 20:54Speaker 3: No, no, no, no.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I'm separating the two. I'm separating the two. It's two
- 20:57Speaker 1: different stories. I was just mentioning that it was on there.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I hated doing that. But and I said then I
- 21:03Speaker 1: switched over to now let's talk about another what happens.
- 21:06Speaker 2: At grocery stores do that all. Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And and when it's and when they're asking for it,
- 21:11Speaker 1: when the clerk asks for it, would you like to donate?
- 21:16Speaker 1: The pressure is intense. You don't want to feel like
- 21:18Speaker 1: a schmuck. You don't want to say no. So what
- 21:23Speaker 1: do you do? Sometimes you say no, we're not at
- 21:25Speaker 1: this time. And Smart and Final does that. And here's
- 21:30Speaker 1: the difference, though. Smart and Final does that during Pastathon.
- 21:33Speaker 1: And the clerks will actually ask, will you donate to
- 21:37Speaker 1: Katarina's Club to people? And I've been in the store
- 21:42Speaker 1: seeing a clerk do that. While on the PA, we're
- 21:47Speaker 1: running a PSA, public service announcement, that they are covering.
- 21:51Speaker 1: And I'm listening to my voice saying, asking for donations
- 21:56Speaker 1: while I'm at the counter paying for something at Smart
- 22:00Speaker 1: and Final and the clerk is asking for donations. So
- 22:03Speaker 1: if you'll get me listening, and then generally people just
- 22:06Speaker 1: start laughing hysterically and they say, if Handel's asking for it,
- 22:09Speaker 1: you're dreaming if you think I'm going to give it
- 22:10Speaker 1: to you. But the bottom line is it really does
- 22:14Speaker 1: affect us. We do not like being hit up at
- 22:17Speaker 1: the supermarket. Voluntary donations. It is a gratuitous act. Act
- 22:23Speaker 1: on our part. And the pressure is, well, it's pretty intense.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I hate it.
- 22:28Speaker 1: So let me do a quick round robin here. Amy,
- 22:32Speaker 1: do you, when you're asked by a clerk, does it
- 22:35Speaker 1: drive you nuts?
- 22:35Speaker 2: I hate it. Okay.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Neil?
- 22:38Speaker 4: No.
- 22:38Speaker 2: If I want to give, I give. If I don't. Okay.
- 22:41Speaker 2: You're not uncomfortable when they ask for you saying no?
- 22:44Speaker 3: No.
- 22:45Speaker 2: It makes me uncomfortable. Okay. I've already got my charities. Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It makes me uncomfortable. Will?
- 22:49Speaker 1: No.
- 22:50Speaker 2: No, I usually say not today. Not today. Not today.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Well, not today means it's never. Does never work for
- 22:56Speaker 1: you because it sure works for me. Yeah, I feel guilty. Good.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I always round up.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And Mario, since you work here at iHeart on the board,
- 23:05Speaker 1: if you had any money, and I know you go
- 23:08Speaker 1: and you buy used food at the supermarket, does it
- 23:12Speaker 1: make you upset?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Does it give you guilt when you say no at
- 23:15Speaker 2: the counter? I agree with the pressure, but I also
- 23:18Speaker 2: say no. Okay. Unfortunately, and I hate to admit this,
- 23:22Speaker 2: I cave more often than not.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Aw.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I do. I do. I don't mind rounding up. I
- 23:28Speaker 2: love rounding up.
- 23:29Speaker 3: That one doesn't bug me, but when they ask you
- 23:31Speaker 3: for a donation, I don't like it.
- 23:34Speaker 2: If they say, do you want to round up? I'm like, yeah, okay.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Okay, so here, the studies have just come out. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 1: legitimate scientific studies. Not only does it piss us off,
- 23:42Speaker 1: by the way, the charity gets more money. The charity
- 23:45Speaker 1: is just fine. The store gets hit. It's actually counterintuitive.
- 23:51Speaker 1: The store is getting nailed. Less business for the store,
- 23:55Speaker 1: more money for the charity. And then the other issue,
- 23:58Speaker 1: which we'll talk about and we have before about the
- 24:00Speaker 1: tip business.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Oh, God, that drives me nuts.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But Bill, doesn't the store get to write that donation
- 24:06Speaker 1: off as their donation instead of yours? No, no, no,
- 24:09Speaker 1: they can't. I mean, if they do, it's illegal. It's fraud,
- 24:12Speaker 1: but it's not their donation. It's your donation. Yeah, it's
- 24:15Speaker 1: a good idea, by the way. If I were a
- 24:17Speaker 1: store owner, you know what? That's not bad. There was
- 24:20Speaker 1: talk of something like that before. You know what Kono
- 24:22Speaker 1: used to do?
- 24:22Speaker 4: He'd keep his paycheck stub with him, and he'd show them,
- 24:25Speaker 4: and they'd give him some money.
- 24:27Speaker 2: They'd round up for him.
- 24:28Speaker 1: That's a good point. Yep, certainly that's the case. Mario,
- 24:32Speaker 1: welcome aboard, okay? Okay, coming up, six things that the
- 24:36Speaker 1: longevity experts wish that, well, people would stop talking about.
- 24:41Speaker 1: They've just blown up some myths that I want to
- 24:44Speaker 1: share with you. KFI AM 640. You've been listening to
