- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You have died of dysentery.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Because we're in Oregon.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: No, we made it.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Uh today we're in Oregon, but we are specifically talking about the Oregon Coast, Central Coast, heading up north and everywhere in between.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hope you enjoy the episode.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And I forgot to mention the name of the podcast, Places of Decay.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It's a travel podcast.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I'll do better.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I won't make this mistake.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Next time I probably will.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I'll try not to.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Enjoy.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Full disclosure, I love the Oregon Coast.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I've been there twice in the past year, once in October of 2025 with one of our daughters, and then went back in May of 2026 with my wife and our twin daughters, one of them who had already been there.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: She loved us so much she wanted to go back.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So if you're flying into Oregon, the most likely you're going to be going into Portland.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You can go into Eugene as well, but from especially on the East Coast, I don't know if there are many direct flights into Eugene.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Probably maybe a few.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I would imagine more on the West Coast.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, for this uh trip, we did fly into Portland, Oregon, rented a car and headed to the coast.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Getting to the coast, at least the central coast, where we started, is um it's in Newport, Oregon.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: It was about a three-hour drive.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: We stopped for a little bit.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It's actually not a bad drive at all.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You go south on I-5, you get off at uh Corvallis, where University, or I'm sorry, where uh Oregon State.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: University?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Oregon State?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Oregon State?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: The Beavers.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: That's what they are.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And actually, that's a cool little town.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Uh when I went back, when I was there back in October, I stopped for lunch.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And uh it's a cool little town.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: So if you have some time, check it out.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But if not, go straight to Newport, and that is where we will begin this adventure.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So while you certainly can do this itinerary uh the opposite way, um frankly, when we were there in October, we went from north down to the central coast.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: This time we did central to north.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be talking about central to north on this episode.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So we used our first two nights, Newport, Oregon, as our base.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Stayed at a nice inn uh at Nye Beach, N Y E.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Uh it's a beach just a little sort of northwest, I guess, of downtown.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and then stayed at a really nice inn.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll put a link to it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: It's called the Inn at Nye Beach.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Perfect for us.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: We had plenty of room.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it was a great place to start this trip.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So Newport itself, really great town.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, has this iconic, beautiful bridge that goes over the water.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Um, you can go downtown.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: There's some shops and restaurants uh down near the marina.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: You will certainly want to go to the marina and walk by.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: If you don't like the smell of fish, you might want to hold your nose because that's where a lot of the piers are where they're bringing in the the daily catch.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: But there are um there's a pier, and all of these California sea lions are there 24-7.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: You can go down there for free, walk out on the pier and watch them.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: They're it they're pretty fascinating.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: They are loud, they bark like dogs.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Well honk, honkish barking.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Anyways, you'll hear them before you go see them.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: 100% worth checking out.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, we sat there for probably a half hour just watch watching them the first day that we were there.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Couple of mentions regarding restaurants.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: There is one there called Local Ocean Seafood.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Some of the best seafood I've ever had.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: It's not cheap, but it's fresh.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: They keep it seasonal.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, the way they just present it, it is um some of the best food seafood I've ever had.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Then there's also Moe's um seafood and chowder.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: This might be a little bit more nostalgia for me.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: We did live in Oregon when I was a teenager in Eugene for only about three months, but we did spend a lot of time out on the coast, and that is where I fell in love, frankly, with seafood, specifically chowder and Moe's clam chowder.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: When I had it, after being gone for 20 something years, it just brought me right back.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Again, you can get chowder at a lot of places.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying it's the best, but man, it took me back a bowl of chowder and clam strip fried clam strips.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Yum.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And if you do end up staying in Nye Beach, where we stayed, very walkable.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: It's hilly, very walkable.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Um, some cool little arts, artsy shops are around there, a couple of nice bars.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: There was an Irish uh pub that we went to, Nana's, I believe.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, it was pretty good as well.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So a good little place just to, you know, spend your first two nights and and get acquainted with Oregon.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Now, just north of where you would be staying in in Newport, I think it's only like three and a half, four miles away, is the uh Yakina Head State Park.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: There is a lighthouse, I believe it is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Um, there's this interpretive center, some really cool things to do there for you, your family.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Um, but the highlight that we loved that I loved on the original trip and then the second trip, there is a place called Cobble Beach.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So you go, you park over near the lighthouse, you walk down, you know, quite a few stairs to get down to this uh specific beach.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So the reason it is called Cobble Beach, it is unlike anything I've ever seen.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: There's just thousands of these smooth stones.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: There's very little sand down there.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: It's mainly these smooth stones.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And when the tide comes in and then brings them back, it's almost like a rhythmic sort of sound.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I I could see how you could just lay there, find a big piece of driftwood, and there's driftwood everywhere, but find a big log and just lay on it and listen to it, and you probably fall asleep.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It is uh it's one of the more unique things I've ever seen, specifically around um, you know, a shore or or the ocean.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're there during low tide, and for whatever reason, we just sucked at timing.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: We were never there on low tide, but people swear that um the the tide pools when when it goes further out that you can walk around, you have to be super careful, obviously, but you can see just completely sort of rich marine life everywhere.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, sea stars and enemies, urchins, things like that.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: So starfish.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Did I say sea stars?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Starfish.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Anyways, heard that's great.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: But what you will see, no matter what time of year you're there, are seals, and occasionally we didn't get to see it, but apparently um migrating gray whales are a common occurrence during obviously a certain time of year, but you will see harbor seals when we were there in October.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: There were some that were swimming not too far away from the the uh shoreline.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: There is a rock out there, they appropriately named Seal Rock, and there are seals just all over that.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: You'll hear them, you'll see them swimming around.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: When we were there this past May, part of the uh part of Kabul Beach was quarantined off just with some signs that you can go there because the um the seals were were um up on shore and with their cubs.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Is a seal baby a cub?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's a pup, not a cub, a seal pup.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: The more you know.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that's your first day.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: You have plenty of of time, depending on what time you obviously you get into Portland, but this previous trip we landed, we got the rental car, we were able to get in to the inn, we went downtown, we had saw the sea lions, we went and had dinner, and we also had time to go to the Yakina um uh state park and hang out at Cobble Beach.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Full day, power through it, but then you get a good night's rest, and then you're gonna need it because this second day, you're gonna be outside and you're gonna see things you've never seen before.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So if this is the itinerary you end up following, day two is a day you are going to be spending most of it outside, and I hope that your weather ends up being as phenomenal as it had been the last two times we did this with uh great visibility uh and and very, very little rain.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: So you are going to head south of Newport to an area called Cape Perpetua.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: You're gonna go through a few towns, one of them being um a little town called Yahas.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: We're definitely gonna talk about that, because oh boy, do I have a restaurant for you.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, you're gonna go past that and you're just gonna look for signs.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: There's gonna be various signs, but you want to go to the keep what I would suggest, first go to the Cape Perpetua overlook.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: You'll you'll pull in, you'll pay for parking.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: You can either elect to hike up to the top of the overlook, or there is uh an option where you can drive your car up and be pretty close.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: So I recommend this as a beginning point just for the day because, and again, if the weather is nice, you're in an elevation of about 800 feet above sea level, you get up there, and the views like you are looking out at about like 40 miles just straight out to the Pacific Ocean.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: It's I mean, I've been to the Pacific Ocean before, but the top of this place, it's like the ocean just looks alive and is it's dangerous looking, but beautiful.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I it's the only way I can explain it.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And and when you're up there, some little like little paths to to walk around, and there is this um uh stone shelter that was built back in the 1930s by the um uh it was the the what's the civilian?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: It's like civilian conservation corps, you know, um yeah, yeah, those people.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Uh but it's it's cool, it's still sitting there.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's not much to do in it, it's just the stone house, but it's cool to to check it out while you are in Cape Perpetual.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, so if you parked on the lower level, uh not all the way on the overlook, you can walk down follow signs toward uh Thor's well, and this will take you underneath the the road that you you took on the way here from from Newport and then out to the coast.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Uh it's about a 10-15 minute walk, and this is where you will see Thor's Well.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: It's like a bowl-like rock formation where it just gets filled up, and then uh as the tide retreats, um the it it retreats back into the sea, and so it just looks like a big bulb that's being filled up, and then uh going down another 20 to 30 feet.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: So when you're there, you can either admire it from an observation point that's up there, but there's not a problem.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: You can go down and walk around on on the different rocks and the rock formations, you'll see some tidal pools.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Uh just wear the right footing.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I saw some people out there wearing flip-flops, which I don't know, not smart.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Just, you know, may maybe have some sneakers or some hiking boots, get out there, but just be smart.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Don't get too close to the water.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: We saw somebody get almost taken out.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, you do not want to fall into the ocean there.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: If anybody falls in, and I'm sure it's happened, uh, I don't see how they get out.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: So just, you know, be be familiar with what's going on around you, but it is 100% acceptable to go out and walk around.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And so you'll be able to check out Thor as well, but you can also walk a little bit further toward uh where the observation area is, and they are there's also this um spouting horn.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: You've probably seen them in maybe some other places that you've been to before, but then the the way the tide comes in and it just shoots the water up into a spray into this one this one area of uh rock formation, and it's pretty cool.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: This area we hung out probably about an hour, hour and a half.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: There's just so much to do and walk around and check out.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: So again, this is uh on the day two, just take your time, enjoy it, hang out.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Uh no rush.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: It's just I it's it's one of the more unique places that you'll ever see.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: And then not too far from there, it looks like there was a point where you could hike from Thorswell to Devil's Churn, which is what I'm going to explain now.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: But something must have happened with either erosion, but you just I didn't at least we couldn't figure out, we couldn't figure out how to do it.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: So we had to get back in the car.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: There's a a smaller lot, just look for the signs to Devil's Churn.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, and again, this is a it's a rock formation, but this thing, you walk down into it, and and and you do walk through this cool little forest to get down to the the bottom, and you can be right near it.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: But it is essentially this collapsed lava tube, and just the way the water goes into this devil's churn, I mean, it it does look like something out of hell.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Do not get close to this one either.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: I did we did see the first time I was there.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Guy was walking up and he was drenched, and he got like he said he got lucky, he didn't get pulled in.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Again, if you're in there, you're probably dead.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Uh so just stay a little bit further back.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: But um, some of I I think I did read something that, you know, some of the it's so violent, the water coming in there and it's just pounding these rocks, and some of the spray, it just goes up like 100, 200 feet up in the air.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: It's it's pretty crazy.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's amazing.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And this is another area where you can hang out on the rocks.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Um, if you go down to the part where Devil's Churn is, and then if you just keep walking around along the left, if the tide isn't too high, you can go around this little peninsula, and on the other side there are some wooden stairs to go back up to the trail.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: So you don't have to go back up the way that you came.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so from here, if you wanted to go a little bit further south, um, there's uh Hesita Head Lighthouse.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: What we went there in October, didn't do it this this um round, but it's a really cool lighthouse worth checking out depending on what you want to do that day.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: You can even go further south, uh, down to Florence, Oregon as well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Um, seems like a cool town.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: We did not make it down there this time.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: If you get very adventurous, you can keep going south down to where the dunes are.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: We did not do that.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be a full day if you do it, but you you 100% could get down to the dunes, check those out, and then get back to Newport uh before the evening.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're hungry, I had mentioned the town of Yahas.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: There is a place that my daughter and I stumbled upon back in October, and we went again this past May.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: It is called the Drift Inn.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: It is uh it's an inn, but they have a restaurant, and I swear to God, it's some of the best pizza I've ever had in my life.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: We lived in New York for a while.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: I am very much a thin crust, it's it's all about the crust, and just simple, delicious pizza with wonderful sauce.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: This place just uh it's a one size, it's a wood burning fire oven.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Did not do a good job.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what is that?
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: A wood wood-burning oven, I guess.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: It's the best pizza.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna go crazy.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I almost said of my life, I've had some really good pizza.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: It is some of the best pizza I've ever had in my life.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna set top five.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Top five pizza.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Uh it's a great, it's it's it's an old school like restaurant.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: It just looks like it hasn't changed in 50 years.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I I love it.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Two thumbs up.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, so then the next day, if you do decide to head out of Newport and begin venturing north, you have plenty, plenty of things to do.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Um as you go up the coast, it's it's obviously it's a beautiful drive.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: It's a place stop off Otta Rock, another place Depot Bay.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a there's a town called Lincoln City.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: We did have lunch there um the previous time I was there, but there is this lake.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: What's the name of the lake?
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Devil's Lake.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Man, everything's double there.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: It's about the cool, it's an amazing looking lake.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: I want to go hang out on this lake.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: It was just beautiful, deep blue lake right near the ocean.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know, Lincoln, Lincoln City seems like a pretty cool spot.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: And then there's plenty of other turnoff places and and things to go to.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: You will, as you're going up the 101, by the way, this is the Pacific Coast Highway that you're on.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: I neglected to mention that.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: So you're on the 101, the 101 that goes down into you know Los Angeles.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: So uh looks very different up here.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're gonna as you're on the drive, you're gonna be on the coast and then you're gonna go a little bit further inland.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Just beautiful forest, just the the scenery is is incredible.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: And uh I would suggest stopping off in the town of Neskowin.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Um, they have something called the Neskowin Ghost Forest.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: So this is a beautiful beach.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, I would say if you're a lot of times, at least when we have been there, the the way that the tide comes in is that you're gonna have to cross some some sort of almost streams.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: There's there's a stream that's coming out of the mountains, but then there's there's ocean water that's coming in.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they meet, gets a little brackish.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So I would say maybe bring just flip-flops for this so you can walk through the through the water uh easily.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: But it's a great beach.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're gonna see families out there, a ton of people with with dogs.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Um the part that they call the Nescuan Ghost Forest is it's only visible during low tide.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Again, we never showed up anywhere on low tide for whatever reason, unfortunately, or whatever.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: But there was this old forest.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it was taken out by disease many years ago, but there's all these tree stumps.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And I've seen pictures of it online where it's just during low tide, and you just see all these old tree stumps kind of coming out of the sand, and it's uh it's a pretty pretty cool site.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe one day I'll see it if I learn how to read a tide table.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so from there, you're gonna continue to head north.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: You will be going through the town of Tillamook.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Uh I kind of liked the Tillamook creamery.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: We stopped off there.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: It's where the you know the Tillamook cheese and and ice cream.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: It's worth stopping off and just hanging out for like 30, 45 minutes.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: You can go in, everything's free.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a separate tour if you want to go see behind the scenes.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: But you walk in, you go up, you can see how they make the cheese, see all the people working.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: It's interesting.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I thought they have a restaurant food decent.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Uh they do have the creamery there, the ice cream.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: We didn't get it.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it was great.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: And you can get some free samples.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: And if you're really into Tillomo cheese, they have all these crazy cheeses that I've never seen at the grocery store that you can buy and take home if you love cheese.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so this is the point of the trip where I'm a little torn on recommendations and what to do.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: So you can go this day, you could keep going, get all the way up to Astoria, Oregon, which is what we're going to talk about next.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Um, we did not do this the past two times.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: We stopped between Newport and Astoria.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: So we've stayed off in Rockaway Beach.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: There's another place called Seaside.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Uh these are kind of like older, like, you know, towns that were built and became, you could tell they became very popular and famous probably in the late 50s and 60s, and it feels like it.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, the this is where people live.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: It is very much sort of that beachy sort of town.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: So if you like it, Rockaway or Seaside, highly recommend it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: It's just, you know, I I would get maybe uh an Airbnb.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: We we said an Airbnb this last time on Rockaway Beach.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Very affordable.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: We walked out, just you have the ocean right there.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: It was it was great, it was beautiful.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So the This is where I would do a little bit of research on, depending on what you want to do.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Again, you can go all the way up to Astoria, or if you want to take your time, stay in one of these little towns, 100% doable as well.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: But where you will want to stop is Cannon Beach.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: And this is where the famous Haystack Rock is.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Uh you if you just Google Oregon Coast, you're going to see a picture of Haystack Rock.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: If you're an aficionado of the Goonies, this was in the Goonies.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So you even if you haven't been to Oregon, if you haven't Googled Haystack Rock, if you've seen the Goonies, you're like, oh yes, Haystack Rock.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: This is a cool little town.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: So you're going to want to park and and certainly walk around the the beach where Haystack Rock is.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: There's just birds everywhere, puffins.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: It's a really cool spot.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: It can get very crowded.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: I would suggest going there earlier in the morning.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: If you decide to stay in one of these little towns beforehand, get there early.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: So there's not as many people walking around.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: And the actual downtown of uh Canon Beach, it's a little bit further from where you would be parking from Haystack Rock to maybe like another mile down the road.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: But downtown Canon Beach, some great restaurants, bars, shops.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: So it's a really it's a really great spot.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: And so if you didn't want to stay in maybe one of those sort of smaller beachside towns, and uh you're more you want more of a high-class experience, Canon Beach.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: That's your spot.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so the next town that you would be staying at on this itinerary is Astoria.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: They do have a big uh film history.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: It is where short circuit one and two were filmed.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Brace yourselves.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, but then the Goonies, bunch of other films.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: All right, so there are many different hotels, there's rentals you can stay at.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: This is when we splurged a bit.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: We did stay at the cannery pier and hotel.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: It is literally built on a pier.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Um, it was built on top of a condemned dock pilings from historic 19th century salmon cannery.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: The the hotel itself has only been around since uh 2005.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: But this is where we're like, you know what, let's step it up up a notch.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And so we stayed at the pilot house, which is the the top of the hotel.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: It's pretty cool if you want to do it, and if you can get in, because I think it books up, but we got lucky, but you're looking out over over the bay, and there's just all the shipping boats are coming in and out.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: When you check in, they give you the itinerary of the boats that are coming and going.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: You could sit there with binoculars and just watch it for hours.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: It was super cool.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: The kids loved it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And the the town of Astoria is great.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Plenty of shops, restaurants, bars.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: We were again, we were only there for one night, but it was a great little spot to sort of end our our quick little jaunt from the central coast up to the northern coast of Oregon.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: All right, so that is a very condensed uh uh itinerary for being on the Oregon coast, from going from the central to the north to Astoria.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Now, from there, you have plenty of other options.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: On this previous trip, we left Astoria, went into Washington State, spent a day at Mount Rainier, we went up to Seattle for a couple of days, and then went back down to Portland for a couple of days.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: So you can easily do that, or you can go straight back down to Portland and uh hang out there for a couple of days.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: I do want to do another episode specifically on Portland and easy day trips going the other way outside of the coast.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: There are some amazing things to see as far as mountains and waterfalls, and frankly, Portland itself.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: It's a great city.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: It's gotten a really bad reputation over the past few years.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Not gonna go into it.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: It's great, it's safe, it's wonderful.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: We're gonna do another episode on that.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: So hope that you found this somewhat helpful if you wanted to go to the coast.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna put some of the links into the description of this podcast episode, and certainly be reaching out if you have any questions on where what we did and where we stayed.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: And look, I'm just starting to do this podcast.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: So if you're listening, I I do appreciate it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: There's things I'm gonna be messing up on, there's things I know I could do better.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: I probably need to get a new microphone at some point, but I do appreciate you listening.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: I do want to hear some feedback.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: So thanks everybody.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: This is Places of Decay.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Talk to you soon.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Bye.
