Transcript
- 0:01Hello. Welcome to He's Hop AS
- 0:03something's off with me. Just Joey TI just bought stamps.
- 0:07It was the most difficult thing I bought in a while.
- 0:13I think it was more difficult for me to buy stamps than to buy
- 0:17the car switching cars. The new car is coming in a
- 0:21couple of weeks. The old one's gone.
- 0:22But yeah, I didn't know where to buy stamps and I was just
- 0:27chatting with my friend randomly.
- 0:29He's asking why are you buying snaps?
- 0:30So there's some government thing where I need to mail a form in
- 0:35and the only way they will take the form is snail mail.
- 0:39And I can't remember the last time I snail mailed anything is
- 0:43to the point where I need, even though I have to look up where
- 0:47you buy stamps, what kind of stamps you're supposed to buy
- 0:50and to buy envelopes, because I have no envelopes.
- 0:54I do have a printer. So I was able to print the form,
- 0:56fill everything out and I was reading the instructions and it
- 1:00says it's going to take 180. It could take up to 180 days for
- 1:04them to process the thing I need them to process.
- 1:08But so weird when I got the citizenship, when I did the
- 1:13citizenship application, I went on site for the interview.
- 1:16I thought the government is going to be not the most
- 1:21efficient or the fastest and somehow in that one day I was a
- 1:27citizen after like 2 hours there, which is like very fast,
- 1:30it was way faster than I expected.
- 1:32And then this other random thing, snail mail, it might take
- 1:37six months, I don't know. So anyways, I don't know where
- 1:43to add the stamps. I went and got it today.
- 1:46They sell some to CVS apparently.
- 1:47Great. Got some stamps and I've got the
- 1:51envelopes and the letters are all done.
- 1:56I don't know where to like drop off snail mail, their mailboxes
- 2:02I think where you can drop them off.
- 2:03But I'm. I don't trust it because I don't
- 2:08do this really. Does it go in any random
- 2:12mailbox? I had this random thought that
- 2:14do people vandalize the mail in the mailboxes, but if someone
- 2:18just walks by and just pours a cola into the mailbox that's on
- 2:23the sidewalk, that's just destroy all the mail because
- 2:25stuff gets like, vandalized. It was just like sitting on a
- 2:27sidewalk on the street or whatever, right?
- 2:29So yeah, I'm going to go Google later.
- 2:33How do you mail something once you have to stamp?
- 2:35Like, what are good and bad places to drop off an envelope?
- 2:38If you're a Gen. Z or millennial listening to
- 2:41this, maybe you can identify. Otherwise, I'm sure there are
- 2:45people out there that are like girl, how can you not know how
- 2:50to mail a letter? But everything is so electronic
- 2:52these days. Literally.
- 2:54I can't remember the last time I mailed anything.
- 2:56It would have been like many, several, could have been 10
- 3:00years ago, something like that. I just don't know how to do
- 3:05these things. Anyway, it's not like they teach
- 3:07you in school so I don't look up and Google everything about how
- 3:10to mail a letter. So that was great.
- 3:14I was at the CVS just now on the way home from the gym to buy
- 3:17stamps. It was easy, but usually when I
- 3:20go to any sort of store, I will prefer stores where you have,
- 3:26you don't have to talk to anyone to get what you need and to
- 3:30check out your items. So a lot of stores now, they
- 3:33have self checkout, You don't have a cashier ringing up your
- 3:36stuff, You scan your own items. It's all electronic, it's a
- 3:41machine, it's a kiosk, you know, and then you're off.
- 3:44So I highly prefer that. But for this, for the stamps, I
- 3:48had to talk to someone because the stamps are kept with the
- 3:52cashiers, like the people that work the cashier desk.
- 3:54And it wasn't that busy at the CVS, but there was this one
- 3:57person, this random guy and the cashier who was a woman and it's
- 4:04pretty quiet in the CVSI was the only person in line.
- 4:07So this guy in front of me has just gone there and he's got
- 4:10headphones on. He's got headphones on like how
- 4:13I headphones are round up there over ear headphones is on one of
- 4:16its ear and is not on the other one.
- 4:19Like how I for my left ear I pull the my my headset back.
- 4:25He was wearing it exactly the same way these over ear
- 4:28headphones and as he was walking up to the cashier he was talking
- 4:34and I just gone there so I don't know like is he on the phone?
- 4:38Is this friend around the corner?
- 4:39Is he talking to cashier and ends up he was talking to the
- 4:41cashier and he looked straight. i.e.
- 4:47My gaydar didn't go off. But anyways, and I guess it's
- 4:52not that uncommon. It's not that uncommon for
- 4:56people to make small talk with a cashier or whoever's on the
- 5:01other side of a counter that's ringing up their stuff.
- 5:04So this guy, I don't know. I never do this, but I don't
- 5:08want to make small talk. I just, I'm I'll be very nice
- 5:11and polite and everything. I don't want to make small talk,
- 5:14bring my shit up and I want to get out of here.
- 5:17But this guy was making sponsor of the girl and I can't tell.
- 5:20This is how you know I'm really gay.
- 5:22I don't know if he was like flirting with the girl or he's
- 5:27just being nice. When I got up to after he was
- 5:31done and I was talking to the chick that was like, here, she
- 5:35didn't seem like the type of person that she wasn't rude.
- 5:38She was like friendly, but she wasn't.
- 5:41She didn't seem like she was trying to make conversation with
- 5:43anyone. Very nice, very pleasant, very
- 5:45professional, no complaints. But sometimes you can tell when
- 5:50someone's chatty. I've been, I've had times where
- 5:53I'm going through a checkout for some reason or rather or like an
- 5:57Uber, and you can tell when someone is open to small talk
- 6:01and also obviously when they try to initiate small talk.
- 6:05She did not seem like that kind of person when I got up there.
- 6:07So I'm thinking, was he just hitting on her, Which I don't.
- 6:13I make it a point not to hit on anyone who's working.
- 6:18Like doesn't matter if it's the gym or whoever, how hot they
- 6:21are, like they're working there. They're not there for you to hit
- 6:24on while, at least not when you're a cashier, The CVS.
- 6:28So I was just waiting. I was killing time on my phone,
- 6:32but this guy was just making the smallest or small talks.
- 6:37They're they're talking something about I think the
- 6:40weather in California versus Idaho or something and I think
- 6:43they were talking about he was asking about where she was from
- 6:46or where he something like that. I don't know.
- 6:49And I'm just thinking is this how straight people hit on each
- 6:53other? Just how that's what I meant by
- 6:54just how gay I am. I don't know how straight people
- 6:58interact with each other to like flirt or to like hit on someone
- 7:03in gay world. Actually, I don't even know.
- 7:06I don't even know how gays hit on each other.
- 7:08I think in an every in an everyday situation with the
- 7:13gays, let's say I'm at a restaurant or something, gays
- 7:18will give each other the look and when someone's properly
- 7:22checking you out, you can tell. I think I do this thing where if
- 7:27I'm checking someone out when I'm out and about, I usually am
- 7:32too shy or nervous or afraid or whatever for them to want to
- 7:37know that I'm checking them out. So I'll like, try to sneak look
- 7:40at someone you. We've all done it.
- 7:41I've been at lunch or brunch or dinner, whatever with my
- 7:45friends. We sit down in the restaurant
- 7:47and then one of my friends will see some hot guy in the
- 7:50restaurant and they'll say, oh, check out that guy over there.
- 7:53But like, don't look because we never want that person to know
- 7:58that we're looking at them because it feels gross for
- 8:01whatever reason. But when when the gays are
- 8:05checking each other out, you can tell.
- 8:07I just don't know how it works for straight people.
- 8:11For me, eye contact, it's it's the first thing that I noticed.
- 8:15If you want to hit on some money, you can always walk up to
- 8:17the to a person, but not in a restaurant in a bar or
- 8:19something, right. I don't hit on people very much.
- 8:22That's not you think that many people I want to hit on.
- 8:25When you when you read a club or a party or like the gay cruise I
- 8:29was just on, that's a very different environment.
- 8:30It's a lot easier to like walk up to someone.
- 8:34OKI do have a lot of I have tricks for not wanting to be
- 8:42hit. I have a lot of tricks for post,
- 8:45like for for how to signal to someone that I'm not interested
- 8:50without having to say no in like a dance floor, a club or party
- 8:57type situation. And I think these are useful for
- 9:01straight people too. But in a party, for example,
- 9:04sometimes people might come up to you and they'll make small
- 9:07talk or whatever. The standard thing is to just
- 9:09not I don't want to ask questions back.
- 9:14I already don't like small talk. But if you're talking to someone
- 9:16and they're like one word answers and they're not
- 9:19answering, they're not asking you questions back.
- 9:22It's just not that into you, to be completely honest, but if you
- 9:28all want, if you all want tips on how to be standoffish, I
- 9:31think I could do that. I've had, I have some friends
- 9:35that when they first met me for the first time in a party
- 9:38situation, for whatever reason, and I believe it, I don't doubt
- 9:42them at all. I just give off this standoffish
- 9:45stance. But now that nobody thought, Oh
- 9:47yeah, you're actually like, cool now that I know you were friends
- 9:50and we can like talk and chat and hang out on whatever, But
- 9:53yeah, the other thing I was thinking about when I was in
- 9:57line with stop talking, I need to do something.
- 10:01I need to buy my stamps and get the hell out of here.
- 10:03I'm not really a very patient person.
- 10:05I don't like waiting in line, and I at the CVS, I was
- 10:08literally waiting in line. Not that long, 60 seconds.
- 10:14But if you are standing in line at the cashier and you're
- 10:17counting 12360 seconds feels like a long time when you've got
- 10:22nothing else to do. So in my head I was thinking two
- 10:26things. I was thinking one of is he
- 10:28trying to hit on her? It's kind of gross.
- 10:30It is. And the second thing is hurry
- 10:33the fuck up so I can get my sense and get the hell out of
- 10:35here. Because I wasn't trying to spend
- 10:37all day and he was in no rush, but he was making the small talk
- 10:41and I was thinking get out so I can get my shit and I can get
- 10:45out. So yeah, there you go.
- 10:49I mentioned this before. I'm carless right now.
- 10:52I mentioned in the last episode CarMax was about to come and
- 10:55take my car away. They told my car away.
- 10:57It was super easy. They had a check for me for the
- 11:00amount ready to go and it was like the same as the the price
- 11:05or whatever they offer online when I did the appointment.
- 11:08Yeah, so that was really, really smooth.
- 11:10The only thing is, I parked the car out on the curb and it was
- 11:147:00 PM when they came and it was past sunset but before dusk.
- 11:20So it was getting dark outside, but it wasn't dark yet and it
- 11:25only took 15 minutes. It's really fast, but out on the
- 11:28curb in front of my apartment building, for whatever reason,
- 11:30there were a ton of mosquitoes that I wasn't aware of.
- 11:34There was a mosquito that was trapped in my car from the day
- 11:37before. I sold the car because I was
- 11:39clearing out all my personal belongings and everything to
- 11:43prep it the day before and I noticed there wasn't mosquito in
- 11:48the car and I couldn't find it for long enough to, like, kill
- 11:52it or shoo it out. So it bit me a couple of times
- 11:54when I was in the car for like literally a couple of minutes
- 11:57just to clear everything out of it.
- 12:00But the data CarMax came. But the data CarMax came, they I
- 12:04was on the curb and she was doing all the paperwork.
- 12:06And I've done this thing before where like a company comes to
- 12:08you to buy your car, you have to sign a bunch of paperwork.
- 12:12It's pretty standard. It's pretty easy.
- 12:14That's not the problem. But while she was going through
- 12:17all the paperwork, the mosquitoes went to town.
- 12:21I was wearing shorts. I didn't know there were
- 12:22mosquitoes out there until we were standing by my car.
- 12:26And she started going through the paperwork and then my leg
- 12:29started itching like crazy. So I was standing there and I
- 12:32was listening to her and she was swinging everything.
- 12:34And I kept like leaning over and like kicking back one of my legs
- 12:37and like, just scratch it. Afterwards, when I got back into
- 12:40the house, I kid you not. Down the back of my right leg
- 12:45there were a row of like 7 bite marks.
- 12:50When a mosquito bites you, you get the little swelling right?
- 12:53You get like the little hard spot.
- 12:54I got like seven of those, but they were all in the line down
- 12:58the back of my right leg above my ankles.
- 13:02So it was like 7 mosquitoes were chewing and lining up to feast
- 13:09on my right leg one at a time and they all picked a fresh spot
- 13:14to bite me on. Perfect line.
- 13:18Just like 123-4567, which is so it's hilarious and horrible at
- 13:25the same time. Thank God the swelling and the
- 13:27itching went away the next morning.
- 13:30I think they were all gone, but it would have been horrible if
- 13:33my leg was itchy for like days on end.
- 13:36That would have been like really, really bad.
- 13:40But anyways, I'm surprised that CarMax took the car for the
- 13:43price that they did. I can't.
- 13:45I don't have time to sell the car myself, so I was glad that
- 13:48they just took it. But I don't have the new car yet
- 13:53and I need to do a few things that require driving.
- 13:57I've been getting groceries in little bits and pieces.
- 14:01I've been going to the Trader Joe's almost every day.
- 14:04This Trader Joe's where my gym is in West Hollywood.
- 14:06It's just downstairs. So I'm now getting used to
- 14:10stopping by the Trader Joe's most days after the gym to pick
- 14:14up. Not a lot of items, only a few
- 14:18items because it's a 20 minute walk from there back to the
- 14:22house and I didn't want to carry a whole ton of heavy groceries
- 14:26for that 20 minutes. So every day that I go to the
- 14:28gym, I'll pick up a few things at a time.
- 14:31So that is not a lot to carry. But yeah, I do need to maybe
- 14:36rent a car for like a day or two before the new one comes.
- 14:40The new car doesn't come for a couple of weeks.
- 14:43You know, it's on the ship somewhere to actually go run and
- 14:46do some chores and stuff. I need to apply for my passport
- 14:50now that I'm a citizen, but you have to do that in person.
- 14:53If it's the first time you're applying for a passport and none
- 14:58of those places are in walking distance, they're like at least
- 15:03like a mile and a half two miles away or something.
- 15:05They actually do passports. I found them at the Beverly
- 15:08Hills Public Library, and I thought that must be a nice
- 15:12library. A library in the middle of
- 15:14Beverly Hills must be like a nice library, right?
- 15:17But they don't have appointments for you to do the passport there
- 15:19until January. For some weird reason.
- 15:22I guess rich people don't go to a library to get their passport.
- 15:26They probably have some sort of special concierge passport
- 15:31service where people just renew the passwords for them and they
- 15:33don't need to like go anywhere or do anything themselves, I
- 15:36assume. I don't know how super rich
- 15:37people work. Yeah, I got to go get my
- 15:39passport eventually. I also want to visit my friend
- 15:44who is a dermatologist down in Orange County.
- 15:49I want to get some prescription retinal for my face.
- 15:54You can't if you're watching the video version of this podcast
- 15:57which is available on my YouTube channel, Just Joey T and that's
- 16:00on Spotify. I don't think it's a super high
- 16:03resin, it's not zoomed in, but I'm breaking out again and I
- 16:07don't think it's the dairy. It might be a stress and I think
- 16:10this throat infection whatever sores thing that I have.
- 16:14My thought I mentioned last so might be stress related as well,
- 16:17but I have to go to the doctor tomorrow anyways for something
- 16:21else. So I'm going to ask the doctor
- 16:23like hey, do I need some antibiotics or something like
- 16:26that or yeah, so I'm going to have them take a look at that.
- 16:30You might want to go to my friend who's a dermatologist.
- 16:34He just got board certified and it's always nice when you have a
- 16:38friend who is a doctor, a medical professional and you can
- 16:42ask them for the medical advice. I feel like I've never had a a
- 16:47PCP, a primary care physician that I quite fully trust because
- 16:53I don't go to the doctor that often.
- 16:56I have to go every three months because I take prep like the
- 16:58Descovy and that's why I'm going tomorrow.
- 17:01Because once a year they wanted you to have like a review of
- 17:04like you being a prep and ask you questions and do all this
- 17:07above the bus. So you have to go with for an
- 17:09actual visit and that's what I'm doing tomorrow.
- 17:13But other than that, you go in every three months to get tested
- 17:17and do blood work, but you're not seeing the doctor, you're
- 17:19just doing the labs. So I don't see the doctor that
- 17:25much. I will go in for an annual exam
- 17:29because it's free and it's covered by the insurance and
- 17:31that it's kind of fun and the annual prep office visit, that's
- 17:35what I'm doing tomorrow. But otherwise I don't go to the
- 17:37doctor very much and therefore I don't really have a rapport with
- 17:41any with my primary care doctor. I guess if you're if you see
- 17:46your doctor all the time you build the report, it's OK.
- 17:50But yeah, so for my skin at least up into some bad.
- 17:55I don't know if I mentioned this.
- 17:56This is the 20th episode I just realized of the podcast and I
- 18:00need to start writing down the topics I talk about because
- 18:02sometimes I don't know if I talk about something already or not.
- 18:06But anyways, I've been to some dermatologist for my acne and
- 18:10some of them are very dismissive and it just kind of treat you
- 18:13like a number. So to have a dermatologist in
- 18:17the area, the OC is a little bit of drive, but it's not that far.
- 18:20That actually is someone I know, and it's an actual friend that I
- 18:24actually trust is so much better than just going to like a random
- 18:30dermatologist. I was, I was hanging over a
- 18:33friend recently a couple weeks ago, and I had never noticed
- 18:37that he had like a mark or like a scar like something on his
- 18:41face. I guess the lighting where we're
- 18:43hanging out kind of made it more obvious.
- 18:45And he said I've had it for the while.
- 18:47And I was talking to him about it and he said it was this
- 18:49particular quote, UN quote dermatologist who apparently he
- 18:54said it's actually not a dermatologist but just does like
- 18:57Botox and procedures and stuff. And he mentioned the name of
- 19:01that person. I was like, oh, I used to go to
- 19:03that person for Botox before I decided to not get Botox this
- 19:07year to, like, save money. And.
- 19:09But when he mentioned the name, this doctor, non doctor person
- 19:13has like a slightly distinctive name.
- 19:15And he, like, mentioned it just without thinking.
- 19:18And it caught my ear. And I was like, oh, is it like
- 19:21doctor or or this and this. And then he's like, yeah, I'm
- 19:24like, oh, OK well, I guess I won't go to that person anymore.
- 19:28But apparently this person, I kind of saw the fuck to my
- 19:31friend's face. Like after doing a some sort of
- 19:33procedure or whatever. I'm not going to name names on
- 19:36here because I don't know US legal litigiousness, whatever.
- 19:41But I was like, okay. Well, I can't go to that person
- 19:44anywhere. So it's really nice that I
- 19:46can't. I have a friend that's a
- 19:47dermatologist that I go see him for that stuff.
- 19:50Once I get the car, then I'm going to make the drive down
- 19:53there because yeah, you can tell.
- 19:56I can. I don't know if you can tell on
- 19:58the video I'm breaking up right now.
- 20:00It might be due to stress and the stress I'm experiencing
- 20:03lately is about money, which is because it's self-inflicted.
- 20:09To be completely honest, I'm not blaming anyone for this.
- 20:12I've been on this career break for quite a long time now and I
- 20:16think I've just gone super lazy. I think it's so easy for me to
- 20:21just wake up at 9:00 AM, have breakfast, take an hour to eat
- 20:27breakfast, and then watch some TV.
- 20:29And before you know it, oh, it's lunch time.
- 20:30Let's eat lunch. And then after I eat lunch, oh,
- 20:33it's time for the gym. Let's go to the gym.
- 20:34When you go by the gym, it's 5:00 PM And that, that's like a
- 20:36whole day. It's so easy to do.
- 20:38And I am trying to start up a business of my own.
- 20:43The thought of it's a little weird.
- 20:48I was doing IT for my day job and I like it.
- 20:53I think some parts of doing a corporate IT job that I don't
- 20:57like. It's not with the IT, the
- 20:59technical stuff. I think it really depends on the
- 21:02culture of the company, the people that I work with, and
- 21:07that's where that was the part that I didn't like.
- 21:10I don't like my boss at my last job and I didn't really like the
- 21:14people I was working with, the culture.
- 21:16I think I've dug into this on like the first or second episode
- 21:19of the podcast. I dug into this.
- 21:20So if we were to rewind and go, no hit up that stuff, yeah.
- 21:25So I I want to start on my own business, but I think I know so
- 21:32little about starting with business that is a little bit
- 21:35kind of sort of that paralysis where oh, you don't even know
- 21:39exactly what to do, so you just don't do anything.
- 21:42But the other part of it is just me getting lazy.
- 21:46So to have the motivation to just do something and just go do
- 21:53it. I think I overthink things quite
- 21:55a bit. So I'm I've been luckily able
- 22:00the last few days to get myself to a mode where one step at a
- 22:03time, don't think, don't try to think 5 steps ahead.
- 22:07Because that's when I sabotage myself, when I try to tackle
- 22:10something that I don't know to convince myself and remind
- 22:13myself. But everyone starts a business
- 22:17and they've never done it before.
- 22:18Like, obviously there are lots of things that they don't know
- 22:21that's mean you shouldn't try, like just take baby steps.
- 22:24So the last couple of days I've been writing out kind of the
- 22:27the, the brand vision for you know what the brand represents
- 22:32and what the brand's values are doing.
- 22:35A little bit of a write up on what type of how we, how the
- 22:39products and how the brand would fit into the market versus the
- 22:42competitors that are already in the marketplace and what type of
- 22:49demo demographic is that the word, what type of people we
- 22:54would likely target with our market positioning.
- 22:57And it's actually something very interesting for me to like think
- 23:00about in my head because part of part of doing this exercises,
- 23:05where does the brand fit in, in terms of what what new
- 23:12interesting things are you bringing to the market.
- 23:15That's just not exactly what someone else is doing, right?
- 23:17Because I feel like if you're going to be selling a product or
- 23:20service, what makes your product or service different,
- 23:24differentiated from what everyone else is doing,
- 23:27Especially if it's a market where it's well established and
- 23:31there are hundreds of other companies kind of sort of doing
- 23:34the same thing, maybe offering very similar products.
- 23:37You know what? How are you going to
- 23:38differentiate yourself what, how watches someone buy your product
- 23:42or service versus the same or very similar product, service
- 23:46from the hundred other companies that already exist in that
- 23:48space? And I believe I do you have you
- 23:53know like a unique taken angle in terms of like the brand
- 23:56positioning and how we're going to market the products and like
- 23:59the target demographic that we're going to go after.
- 24:02So that part I'm actually quite excited about to have that
- 24:08uniqueness, that kind of value proposition that our brand has
- 24:12that the vast majority of the existing other companies in that
- 24:17category in the industry do not have.
- 24:19So I think the, I just have to keep reminding myself, you know,
- 24:26yes, it's a business, but like don't think so seriously about
- 24:29it and don't try to like think too many steps ahead just like
- 24:34get something done today. They just get one thing done
- 24:36today and just keep chipping away at it.
- 24:41I think it would be really awesome if I can get it to a
- 24:44point where I can start, actually.
- 24:47I can have the product be ready to sell and stocked up with
- 24:53fulfillment service by the end of the year or maybe like in
- 24:57January. And I I think it's going to take
- 25:02work to get there, but I'm just not trying to slap myself out
- 25:06and but I know I can just get this myself.
- 25:08We're like, Oh my God, it's so much work.
- 25:10My head then kind of shuts down that and I'm sitting on the
- 25:12couch watching TV, not doing anything.
- 25:14So tiny little baby steps and yeah, I will have to invest a
- 25:23amount of money that I'm going to pull from my investments and
- 25:26my savings. I mean you have to spend some
- 25:28money to make some money. I don't think my business is
- 25:30going to turn any significant profit for like the first little
- 25:34bit. I kind of want to do this kind
- 25:36of soft launch where Okay make the products and have the
- 25:41products like ready to go, have it be in the warehouses, have it
- 25:45be available online where people can buy it, kind of do like a
- 25:49soft launch because no one really know about it.
- 25:51And then when I get to that point then I'm going to really
- 25:55have to learn and figure out how to really market the products.
- 26:00And I think that's the point. You noticed that I'm have not
- 26:03mentioned what this products last service is and that's
- 26:07intentional. I feel like I'm not ready to
- 26:10kind of reveal what I'm working on yet.
- 26:13But I think once we get to the point where we have sellable
- 26:16products and I know that okay, this is like actually something
- 26:21I can offer and people can actually get, that's where I'm
- 26:26going to be more comfortable talking to you guys and
- 26:29actually, you know, saying out loud to people, hey, this is my
- 26:33company, this is my product. People can actually go buy it
- 26:36now. But yeah, the marketing part I
- 26:40think is where I'm careful not to sight myself out.
- 26:43I'm not good at marketing. And you know, just starting with
- 26:46a business, I don't really have that much money to hire someone,
- 26:50but I think I would rather kind of sort of do that.
- 26:53I'm probably going to go look for some marketing expertise a
- 26:56little later on once the product is ready to go.
- 26:58It's in the factories or it's in the and what's, I don't know, a
- 27:01workout. I'm working on some of the
- 27:02fulfillment issues. Once the product's ready to go
- 27:05on sale, the marketing is really what's going to make it or break
- 27:10it. So it's kind of exciting and
- 27:11scary at the same time a little bit, but I'm kind of sitting on
- 27:15myself a goal which feels like very, it feels very attainable
- 27:24and like very kind of impossible.
- 27:27At the same time, I keep hearing this stat where but only 20 to
- 27:3130% of small startup businesses actually succeed.
- 27:36Or metric they're measuring success by, but I'm determined
- 27:40not to get discouraged. I'm gonna take it one day at a
- 27:43time and just at least do one thing every day.
- 27:46Yeah, until I kind of get this off the ground.
- 27:49And I'm also reminding myself, you know what?
- 27:53If you spend X amount of dollars, I'm not spending my
- 27:55life savings on it. I think I'm spending a sizable
- 27:58but a manageable chunk of my money to do this.
- 28:01And you know what? If I really don't want to do it,
- 28:05there's no shame in just shutting it down.
- 28:07I think there's part of me where I like, I don't like losing.
- 28:10And I I mean a lot you don't. You don't set out to fail,
- 28:13right? You set out to be successful.
- 28:15You set out to win. You set out to get an A on that
- 28:17test. You set out to win first prize
- 28:19in the competition. So obviously I'm setting up to
- 28:23be successful. But I also like the comfort of
- 28:27you know what? You're starting a business for
- 28:29yourself and give it, give it the, you know, good old college
- 28:33try. Really try though.
- 28:36And if for whatever reason it's not successful, don't take it
- 28:41the wrong way. It's just not meant to be and we
- 28:43can just cut our losses and move on.
- 28:46That provides me some sort of comfort.
- 28:49It's not like, you know, what if you if you do this and it fails,
- 28:54your life is ruined. You know, it's not that bad.
- 28:57Sometimes failure, failure is not necessarily a bad thing.
- 29:01You know, as long as you learn from your mistakes and you kind
- 29:05of sort of grow and get something out of it, I think
- 29:09that's fine. We all make mistakes and we all
- 29:11learn from them. So yeah, it's something I'm
- 29:15going to work on. Hopefully by the end of the year
- 29:18or maybe in January, I've got something to announce.
- 29:21I'm really excited to be my own boss.
- 29:24Actually. I don't even like that term.
- 29:26But I'm I'm if one day this company is successful enough to
- 29:32the point where I don't want to be like the next whatever super
- 29:36big brand in this industry, but successful enough where we can
- 29:41make good products and have new products come out and then also
- 29:47be able to hire people. And that I think would be so
- 29:54cool to be able to run a company that where I've got other people
- 29:59working with me and run a workplace and run a company the
- 30:05way I would like to run it and not be working for someone else
- 30:09and have to a bit by someone else's rules.
- 30:12One of the things I don't like with Oh my God, so the TE bitch.
- 30:17One of the things I don't like about some of the companies, not
- 30:21all of them, some of the companies I've worked for before
- 30:23that were like tech startup companies, is that sometimes it
- 30:28feels like a cult. It just feels like the CEO is
- 30:33usually the founder of that company and they're still with
- 30:37that company for like smaller startups like tech startups,
- 30:40right? And we heard this term like tech
- 30:43Bros in Silicon Valley. Sometimes it feels like a cult
- 30:45when you work for some of these companies and kind of sort of on
- 30:48the surface or at first glance in when you're working as an
- 30:53employee of the company, it feels like the culture is like,
- 30:56oh, nice and fun and everything, which is like typical Silicon
- 30:58Valley kind of company culture that all these tech startups
- 31:03aspire to, right? And then once in a while you get
- 31:05free food and it's more like lax and people need to dress in the
- 31:09suits and kind of stuff, that kind of vibe.
- 31:12But the longer you work in some of those, sometimes it kind of
- 31:16feels like because these companies usually are private
- 31:21companies and the cofounder is the CEO, the founders are the
- 31:24CEO's are like they're at the very top of the company.
- 31:27Kind of feels like a little bit of whatever they want is how
- 31:31everyone should act. In a way, yeah.
- 31:36Because they're they, they own the company and they founded the
- 31:39company. So it's kind of sort of like
- 31:40it's hard to disagree with them. But this this one company I work
- 31:44for when I'm not going to mention anything but where I was
- 31:47an IT person there and we just needed some stands for the
- 31:51iPads. Every conference room had an
- 31:53iPad on the table so you can work the video conferencing
- 31:56system. And this particular CEO, first
- 32:00of all, he's fucking asshole. Second of all, he didn't like
- 32:04the stands I picked for the iPads.
- 32:08And I'm thinking one time he came by my desk and he actually
- 32:11used the F word and to be like, oh what what the fuck kind of
- 32:15stands are these? And like, I was that typical my
- 32:18server, like, Oh my God, sorry, I will send you some options.
- 32:21And he walked away. I don't ever want to be in that
- 32:24position again. You know, I I don't.
- 32:27I had enough of like my parents yelling at me when I was growing
- 32:30up where I was just so scared of, like, authority figures,
- 32:35like, mom. Yeah, I love my mom and nowadays
- 32:37she doesn't yell at me. I've talked about this before
- 32:39but growing up my mom was like very strict with us, right.
- 32:42So I still have this thing where sometimes I'll be doing
- 32:46something and I have this nagging, subconscious voice in
- 32:51my head that's like, Oh my God, am I doing something wrong?
- 32:54Am I going to get yelled at? So that's kind of stuck with me.
- 32:57I have a lot of authority figures yell at me and previous,
- 32:59you know, like, like teachers and that kind of stuff.
- 33:02And my mom, that's where if I ever are in a situation
- 33:08nowadays, like with a boss and everything, I always have this
- 33:10little voice in my head that thinks, Oh my God like it is.
- 33:14Is my boss angry with me or upset with me in some way, shape
- 33:19or form? And I get like little like
- 33:21scared. Have that fear.
- 33:22I don't want to be in that position where like like with
- 33:25this boss, like first of all if you're running a whole fucking
- 33:28company is your priority really what the iPad stands look like
- 33:32in the conference rooms fucking eight.
- 33:34No. So at that moment I was that you
- 33:38know that trauma if you were that I had can like wear his
- 33:42head And it was very much like, Oh my God, like I'm sorry.
- 33:45I was sending you some options for like some news stands and
- 33:47blah blah blah. Now that I'm thinking about it,
- 33:51or like after that interaction where I had some time to
- 33:53decompress, I was thinking, this guy's just a fucking asshole.
- 33:57I one of the reasons I want to be my own boss.
- 34:00If I ever am lucky enough to have to be in the position where
- 34:03to hire people. I want to treat people the way I
- 34:07want to be treated. And with some of these companies
- 34:10that I work for, just these cofounders like not to like
- 34:16write on a stereotype, but it's it's always these like
- 34:20middleaged white tech Bros that it feels a little bit like a
- 34:24cult. Like, you know, whatever they
- 34:26say, they think it's like gold and everyone needs to kind of
- 34:31sort of worship them because they founded this company and
- 34:34they're paying your paycheck. I just don't subscribe to that
- 34:39anymore. So my feelings and attitudes on,
- 34:43you know, the employeremployee relationship is very different.
- 34:47I would love to work for a company where it's not some
- 34:50white. Do it at the top.
- 34:52You know, I would love to work for a company that, you know,
- 34:55we're the CEO or the leadership. You know, it's predominantly not
- 34:59white people, not like some like middle age-old white people.
- 35:03No offense to white people, but like, you know, why can't we
- 35:07have more people that are that look like me?
- 35:09There are that are people of color that are leading the
- 35:15company or, you know, running it, operating it.
- 35:18Why don't we have more women? Why don't we have more, you
- 35:20know, people of various backgrounds or people, different
- 35:25cultures that not just like that stereotypical white techno
- 35:28person from Silicon Valley? And I think that's one of the
- 35:31reasons why I decided to take kind of this career break
- 35:36because I was in tech, I was working for tech startups and
- 35:39you know, it's always been like these, you know, like
- 35:42middle-aged white people at the top.
- 35:43And doesn't mean they're all, I'm not saying all middle-aged
- 35:46white people are bad people, but just my experiences.
- 35:48You know what I want to change? I want to, I want to work for
- 35:53someone who is not some Silicon Valley tech bro.
- 35:57You know it's not really the it's not really the best when
- 36:02you get that label. So yeah that interaction stuck
- 36:05with me. Like honestly you're don't worry
- 36:08about the iPad stands bitch. Go run the fucking company.
- 36:12And I'll say the company's not even that successful.
- 36:13It's still it's still going, but it's just like no one listened
- 36:18to this podcast. There's 20 people that listened
- 36:19to this podcast and if some if if for some reason anyone that I
- 36:24work without a company heard that story, they will
- 36:27automatically probably already know, oh they're talking about
- 36:30that company because yeah. I don't, I don't.
- 36:36I I want to be. I want to be the type of
- 36:40business owner that is the opposite of that.
- 36:44It's like you want to take vacation to go to like a party
- 36:48do it sounds everything's taken care of.
- 36:50You want to go to EBC? Yeah.
- 36:52Take a week off. You want to go on a cruise go
- 36:55for it. You know, I I that's the kind of
- 36:58culture that I want. If I were able to have my own
- 37:00company where I have employees, I, you know, yeah, that that's
- 37:05what I want. So to have the opportunity to
- 37:07maybe have that with this company, I'm trying to start in
- 37:10the future in a way it's pretty exciting.
- 37:13So having said that, I am on the job hunt because hey, I do need
- 37:20some money to come in. And again, if I can find a
- 37:23company to work for where you know, like the leadership is
- 37:25good, the culture is good, maybe not a tech startup anymore.
- 37:30I still like doing the IT like the IT work actually enjoy
- 37:33doing. So yeah, we'll see how that
- 37:36goes. I'm on LinkedIn every day
- 37:38looking for jobs right now and I just feel like kind of feel like
- 37:42eventually there will be like opening or like a job posting
- 37:47that's going to jump out at me. Right now everything is just
- 37:50very like, blah blah blah blah, blah.
- 37:52Every, every job, every posting for every company for that type
- 37:55of role. It just looks like pretty much
- 37:57the same. But something tells me
- 38:00eventually I'm going to land on something good that's worth
- 38:04waiting for, so I'm not sweating it.
- 38:06So yeah, we'll see. All right.
- 38:10Again, if you want to see all the pimples on my face right
- 38:14now, the video version of this podcast is available on my
- 38:17YouTube channel, Just Joey T and also on Spotify.
- 38:20But until next time, bye.
